Animal and Music Therapy in PTSD
15 posts
My name is Victoria Prokop and this blog is about alternate therapies regarding Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, (especially in Veterans). This particular blog is important because it explores uncharted territory that only few have ventured into. Many therapists go straight to medications and face to face counseling without a second thought about other options. Alternative therapies are growing and can potentially change the way humans cope with different situations. I am writing this blog, not just for my class, but because I want to show others that there are more opportunities for improving a veteran’s mental health other than using drugs. .

This article is about an animal assisted therapy group that has helped veterans for quite some time. The group is called Operation Wolfhound. It is now federally funded. The article goes into the logistics of the difference between therapy dogs and service dogs. The article says, ”Medication works 50 percent of the time. Talk therapy, alone, works 30 percent of the time, and dogs work 84.5 percent of the time," said Alicia Miller, Army veteran and cofounder of Operation Wolfhound. "The dogs are proven effective. It's a much better deal for the veteran because they don't have to worry about the side effects of medication." This statement alone proves that many this up and coming therapy really works. A jump, 50 percent from medication to 84.5 percent for working with dogs, is a large success. There are many ways these numbers will help us. It gives insight as to how the brain works with PTSD as well as how effective different therapies are.

In doing a quick poll of which therapies work the best. As you can see, Music and Animal Assisted Therapy have the top votes. Surprisingly, nature came in third. We can see that less intrusive therapies are more supported than the traditional therapies.

This is a really good song about how PTSD affects Soldiers.
“ Did you listen good when I said, Leave me be? PTSD, get the hell away from me. Cuz you held me down, didn’t even let me sleep, didn’t even let me breathe, didn’t let me live in peace. “

Animal-assisted therapy improves patients’ mental, physical, social and emotional functioning with the aid of animals. Depending on the needs of the patient, many different animals can be used in therapy, including horses (also called equine-assisted therapy), dogs (also called canine-assisted therapy), dolphins, llamas, rabbits and other animals. Animal-assisted therapy takes place in a variety of settings, including prisons, hospitals, nursing homes, therapeutic boarding schools for teens and mental health facilities. This form of treatment can take place individually or in groups, and is led by a qualified therapist or professional with specialized expertise. Much more than simply spending time with an animal, animal-assisted therapy involves specific therapeutic goals, strategies and outcomes measures. Therapeutic experiences can include walking, brushing, petting and caring for an animal, as well as processing the experience of trying to achieve a given task.

Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. Music Therapy is an established health profession in which music is used within a therapeutic relationship to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals. After assessing the strengths and needs of each client, the qualified music therapist provides the indicated treatment including creating, singing, moving to, and/or listening to music. Through musical involvement in the therapeutic context, clients' abilities are strengthened and transferred to other areas of their lives. Music therapy also provides avenues for communication that can be helpful to those who find it difficult to express themselves in words. Research in music therapy supports its effectiveness in many areas such as: overall physical rehabilitation and facilitating movement, increasing people's motivation to become engaged in their treatment, providing emotional support for clients and their families, and providing an outlet for expression of feelings.
