I haven’t had chance to update tumblr but unfortunately my beautiful Freddy passed away a few nights ago. We had our final cuddles and he passed peacefully curled up in a bunch of blankets.

A brief look into the life of a shoulder rat

It’s the first time in all of my life I’ve actually realised how important my job in a supermarket is. It’s always looked on as a job you do before you make it in life, or one left for the people who aren’t “good enough” to do something better. But really, the people in my position are absolutely essential to keep society running. It’s the first time I’ve analysed my lifestyle and a job I’ve gone to absentmindedly for the past three years and thought “yes, I’ll put myself at risk to go to work to help other people and play my part in this situation”. My job may not require masterful academic ability and there may be no potential to make a name for myself or to define a moment in history, but we are the people that plod along silently, day after day, carrying a society that takes us entirely for granted. To my fellow colleagues and all people currently going to work providing services your community could not function without (bus drivers, store workers, health and care workers and whoever else is still going out there) I salute you; this is a time to be proud of the work you are doing!

Been feeling rather down again recently. I’ve been spending a lot of time on my own again and I guess it’s allowed me to drift into the realm of loneliness I try to avoid. This is when I miss Max the most, I don’t always have the social energy to go outside or be around people (especially not after a long customer service shift) but that doesn’t mean I don’t crave company. I miss having Max just lay by my leg whilst I read a book, or the little nudge he would give my arm to stroke him. I miss the constant source of comfort he provided, somebody who didn’t care what mood I was in or how down I was, he still wanted to be around me and seemed to know how to cheer me up. I know one day I’ll rescue another dog in his honour, but living in this flat spending the majority of the time on my own I feel really down. I’ve been visiting my parents a lot more and being in their home brings me some comfort, especially now they have a puppy who I adore to pieces (although it’s slightly strange a new dog being in that house where I grew up with my two dogs). I feel like I’m sort of floating through life at the minute, hopefully I’ll land on my feet once I start Uni and it feels like I have direction again. Right now I’m just trying to keep positive and appreciate the little blessings each day offers.
