Happy Birthday Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve in Colorado! Originally established as a national monument on March 17, 1932, Congress authorized its redesignation as a national park in 2004. For 88 years, visitors have surfed the sandy slopes, marveled at the glow of planets and heard sand sing. That’s right - the park’s sand are warbling wonders. This natural phenomenon sounds like humming and happens as air is pushed through millions of tumbling sand grains as the dunes shift. Maybe the tallest dunes in North America will sing today to celebrate this special occasion. And if now, the elk can bugle. Photo by Patrick Myers, National Park Service.
