I’m not entirely sure where I’m going with this, but I really want to talk about how the upperclassmen and the monsters mirror each other. How each member of the monsters has a counterpart in the upperclassmen, someone with a similar backstory and similar motivations and goals, but with certain crucial differences that serve to highlight all the character development that happens throughout the books.
For instance, there’s Andrew and Renee: both foster children with harsh pasts who murdered and feel no remorse for it, but forced to face the consequences regardless. Andrew is left with a brother who can’t forgive him; Renee has to deal with the knowledge that she’ll never be the good person she wants to be. They have the same fighting style - defensive, reactive, but knowing that the only way to win is to stop your opponent from ever hurting you again; they both play goalie because they’re both best when they stand at everyone else’s backs and prevent anything from getting past them. There’s a reason Andrew charges Renee with protecting her half of the team, and not Dan, the official leader; where Dan is focused on moving forward and charging down the opposition, Renee and Andrew are about making sure everyone under their wing survives.
Then there’s Dan and Kevin, the team leaders (one official, one unofficial), a striker and an offensive dealer/occasional striker sub, #1 and #2. They’ve both been pushed down and shoved aside, marked as second-best or second-rate, and they both refuse to let that stop them. They both fight because they don’t know how to lose, because they can’t know how to lose, and they expect the same from everybody else. Kevin won’t accept anything but the best because that’s what he’s been taught, that’s the only way he knows how to live; Dan knows that anything less than perfection gives everyone else the right to stomp all over you, and is determined to never let that happen again. (And then there’s the fact that they both see Wymack as a father).

Andrew is the good cop/ Fun uncle
Nail is the bad cop/ scary uncle
You call Andrew when you want to talk shit and you call Neil when you need tires slashed.
Also, clearly Andrew and Neil are the favorites of the foxes kids but in the way that when they are babysitting the kids always ask Andrew for things because he will say yes. When Andrew does say no though the kids know not to push because Neil is litterally the coolest and kindest uncle until he uses his adult voice.

Who would he have to heckle, harass, terrorize, or manipulate for their own good?
Though he probably would have sorted out Jeremy's backstory.
neil wouldve dipped in two days if he was recruited to usc instead of psu

There are no good animals or evil animals, but they can be divided by whether being attacked by one is any indication of your own moral standing. There are animals that will only fuck with you if you fuck with them first - if I see you getting swooped or chased by something that doesn't attack people unprompted, the first thing I'm asking is "bro what the fuck did you do?" because they would not pursue you in the first place if you had not wronged them.
And then there are animals that will just attack you because fuck you that's why. For them, your mere existence is a slight against them, and it has nothing to do with what you might have done or your inherent nature. A llama will fuck you up because that's just what they do, and their inherent nature.

This this this
I said this in another post, but it bears repeating:
Neil is to crime what Andrew is to Exy. Supernaturally talented and unstoppable if he wanted, but due to his general lack of interest nerfs himself.
Everyone should be grateful Neil finds crime boring and uninteresting compared to Exy cause he would have been the Kevin Day of crime, surpassing his father and mother. Nora confirmed in the EC that if the Moriyamas had messed with Andrew, Neil would have carefully and competently dismantled their empire and watched all of them burn. He was practically lab created and stress tested his whole life to fight, outlive, and outsmart criminal masterminds.
My headcannon is Ichirou is secretly relieved that Nathaniel just wants to play stick ball.

I am so down for Jeremy/Andrew bonding. Like, no one else has had to put these messed up assholes back together. And Andrew has done it TWICE - first a Raven and then his lover/partner/soul-person.
[Just by *seeing* them and meeting them in their trauma and then expecting them to do more for *themselves.* That's it. That's all. That's everything. ]
Plus, I'm just convinced that Jeremy's secret trauma is going to echo Andrew's in some way. You gotta be fucked up to understand Jean or Neil or Kevin. (I'm also convinced Jeremy will NEVER understand Neil. Because Neil is feral while Jean and Kevin were caged and Jeremy knows cages. While Andrew knows both.)
So... imagine in TSC2 Jean calling Kevin/Neil and asking to speak to Andrew about how he could be in a relationship with someone like Neil despite all that happened to him and how he deals with feelings and stuff.
I imagine Neil/Kevin being like "Wtf, he wants to talk to Andrew." And Andrew picking up the phone with the most bored face he could have (he's very curious) and picking up like "Jean, Jean Valjean" and Jean regretting all his life choices right then and there.
But it ends up being THE conversation he needed (and maybe Andrew too).

thinking about the complex and ever-shifting power dynamic between jean and neil throughout the series. jean throws all of neil’s past names at him as part of a wider blackmailing plot threatening to expose neil to his murderous father. neil casually informs jean he’s negotiated with the mafia on his behalf and made it so jean has to give up 80% of his earnings for the rest of his life. jean watches out for neil while at evermore despite the high personal risk that this poses. neil altruistically orders a hit on jean’s abuser, paying a significant sum of money for this. and of course we mustn’t forget jean referring to neil as an abominable cockroach to his face. truly a fantastic relationship. who’s doing it like them

sick of seeing hate thrown towards “baby gays.” let them wear rainbows. let them wear their pride flags like capes. let them make jokes about their identity and talk about it all the time. let them wear tails and puppy ears. let them do what is constantly deemed as “cringe.” let them be excited about finally being able to express their true selves. they deserve it. we all deserve it.

Makes your heart hurt, doesn't it?
Do you think the adults ever looked at neil and andrew and just remarked about how young they look? 18 and 19 at the beginning of the books. they’re like Babies compared to them.
Like imagine betsy listening to andrew tell her about how he feels responsible for the safety of his family. and he’s just. so so young to have this much weight on his shoulders.
And abby tracking neil’s scars with her eyes. sure she’s seen a lot while working with the foxes, but this… not to mention wymack picking neil up from the airport and noticing how small he is when he’s cradling his broken body in his arms. how he has more scars and bruises than unblemished skin
