On Digital Media & Moving Image: Warm Media, Human-Non-Human, Posthuman Storytelling Based on theoretical and literary research, Areumnari creates virtual narratives that integrate stories from different temporalities. The focus is on exploring digital media and moving images, with a particular emphasis on warm media, human and non-human, and the futuristic storytelling. It opens up another realm of awareness, while also illuminating the possibilities of another world, and evokes reality while creating a surreal atmosphere.

Peculiar Interface The Outpost | Apr 15-Jul 30, 2023 | Hanoi, Vietnam With Ryoji Ikeda, Ip Yuk-Yiu, Kaz Watabe, SMACK, Mario Klingemann, Shinseungback & Kimyonghun, Nguyên Hoàng Giang -Afterccloud | Sammây, Single Channel Video, 16:9, 13m 44s, 2022 -Mutation Gears, Ceramic, Acrylic Paint, Glaze, Cable Tie, Chain, LED Sticks, 28*14*5cm, 22*22*7cm, 18*7*5cm, 2021 The idea for Peculiar Interfaces struck me while I was revisiting my favorite childhood manga - Doraemon. Suddenly, it dawned on me that many futuristic gadgets in the four-dimensional pouch of this beloved time - traveling cyborg have now become indispensable items in our life. From free video calls to translation devices, from street maps to artificial intelligence, digital applications are part of our reality. In a relatively short breath of time (30 years), technological marvel has put us in awe yet also created considerable anxiety. If those tools Brough not only benefits but also complications for Doraemon and his friends, what would be the cultural impact of advanced technologies and the digital space on our 21st-century society?
Through the works of 8 artists and artist collectives, Peculiar Interfaces opens up conversations on: a hybrid reality (whereby the physical and virtual worlds increasingly intertwine); the meaning of data in the age of algorithms (rethinking text, imageries and sound in the age of meaning-making through datafication and machine learning); posthumanism (negotiating what it means to be human in the age of smart machines) as well as connection and care (unpacking the ideas of digital memory, connectivity and dialogues).
This exhibition does not seek to present the convergence points of art and technology. Rather, it aims to examine how the amplifying presence of advanced technologies is impacting our relationships with one another and the world around us.

Afterccloud as Part of ‘Islandwide Coverage’ by AWKNDAFFR Oct 2022 - Mar 2023 | Singapore Biennale 2022 -Afterccloud, single channel video, 13min 44sec, 2022 -Cloud Ruin, glaze, acrylic, waste wire, memory, aluminum ring, seashell, glue on Ceramic, 25*14*15cm, 2022 -Black Memory Map, Digital collage printed on linen, 110*273cm, 2022 In this day and age where data and transportation networks make up the vernacular of everyday life, infrastructural and information systems generate conveniences, mobility, and the circulation of bodies and data while also bringing about acceleration and sensory overload. But within the dense tangle of predetermined pathways and programmable routines, is it still possible to get lost?
Intrigued by this question-provocation, AWKNDAFFR explores the circuitry of movement in the multi-site, multi-authored project, Islandwide Coverage. Activating a variety of vantage points (on the move, from above, within this existential plane and from somewhere other), AWKNDAFFR attempts to delineate from a well-worn terrain, navigating towards a sense of nowhereness (but not lost), as they invite audiences to wander on and off beaten paths around the island as a passenger-viewer.
Teaming up with artists and collaborators who act as interlocutors in different vehicles and venues, the artworks are asynchronously integrated into the movement and mechanism of each vehicle or venue. This way, it transforms an encounter that takes place in familiar surroundings, and transports the passenger-viewer into new frames of relational and sensorial experience on each journey and at each portal. - AWKNDAFFR is an artistic operation led by Wayne Lim and Soh Kay Min. For Islandwide Coverage they collaborate with Areumnari Ee (KR), ila (SG) and Ang Kia Yee (SG), Ranu Mukherjee (US), and Extended Asia (ID).

Can, Cannot, and Other Options: Between Defiance and Desire, Towards Fuller Lives $28.00 SGD (purchase link 👆) Edited by Wayne WJ. Lim & Soh Kay Min Published 2021
Bringing together a flavourful rasanblaj of artists and thinkers, Can, Cannot, and Other Options is an anthology of speculative non/fictions, personal and interpersonal confessions, and experimental propositions, that highlights the desires for lives lived fully which have persisted through toxic time and in spite of deep violence. Pathways for other options have always been there all along — the repetitive task of times anew remains, always, to find these paths again.

Afteraffects | “My Narration Is A Delightful Diversion, Or… “ When a change comes, in what sense and in what way can it be realized and practiced in life? It is a world building in meaning, but in practice it may be a very minor shift of thought or habit. Also, the difference before and after the change may not be huge or heavy, but still holding each other and creating different meanings by opening up the gap between them little by little.

When Barbarism Is Religion And Anxiety Is Air: An Infrapoetic Analysis of Late Capitalism In South Korea Using the 'Cruel Optimism' by Lauren Berlant and 'The Promise of Happiness' by Sara Ahmed as main texts, I unraveled the concept of 'Good life' and 'Happiness' and developed the narrative looking at infrastructures as a projection of the desire and attachment toward it. For the unique perspective towards infrastructures, I refer 'Concerete Utopia' by Park Hae Cheon. - The desire to rise with the apartment - The subway where the desires circulates repeatedly - The ship that did not reach the final destination It is a late capitalist critique that reflects modern and contemporary history and specially mediatized environment of youth, and it talks about how such desires for certain objects that are believed to be the step for a good life are mould by society and amplified by youth. At the same time, I argue to be open to affects of what’s left to counter the impassive condition that the current infrastructures constitute.

Matter of Heart / Heart of Matter 2019, Malade, Rotterdam, Netherlands
From Anxiety To Equanimity: Is this a matter of this mere heart or the heart of all these complexities? For the practitioners of the alienated heart and its reclaim in the time of outsourced life. By weaving the ancient Greek myth, Spinoza’s affect, and the contemporary psychological theories, I tried to understand the relationship between emotion-affect-heart-self. It is to understand emotion as an essence, not a diagnosis, and further to stand on the side of the feeling/individual against the hierarchical conditions of society.
... Even with disaster ahead and ruin imminent, it is better to face them with a smile, and with the head erect, than to crouch at their approach. And, if the fight is for principle and justice, even when failure seems certain, where many have failed before, cling to your ideal... and calmly await the conflict. It has been said that “in patience ye shall win your souls,” and what is this patience but an equanimity which enables you to rise superior to the trials of life? Sowing as you shall do beside all waters... you may, in the growing winters, glean a little of that wisdom which is pure, peaceable, gentle, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. - AEQUANIMITAS, William Osler, 1917

How To Understand Darkness As It Is? ✨ Lecture Performance 2018, part of Blugoa’s DAI COOP: Logics of Montage, Arnhem, Netherlands November Walk in Arnhem through Sonsbeek Park along with the video of an oral history : To give a space for darkness and maybe underwater - where hidden stories - of a woman, ghost, crazy person, etc. - remain. Small objects from breakfast will become our 'ancestral montage' - which go beyond the current timeline and do jump-cuts. Residues weave each other as time goes by and we may not need to know/see all.

Usghosts Reading performance with 14 Collaged Images Slide 2018, KITCHEN, State of Concept, Athens, Greece An exchanging thought between the melancholy migrant and here at GZ, in the scorching sun, dried symbols, ruins and suspension. Visceral impulses are repeating like rituals and oft-frustrated people are facing dead ends. Would those still be there? My craving is not not being a ghost, but also creating lives for them.
