Islam is perfect, Muslims are not. Religion doesn't cause oppression, its misuse does. In the modern world, this misuse is mostly masked in the guise of nationalism, state-formation, self-victimization, populism, and sometimes even plain arbitrary supremacy. No matter how strong, famous, wealthy, and powerful a person may be, those qualities are not a guarantee of them being a good representative of their religion. While Umar Ibn Al Khattab's saying along many others reinforces this, this applies not just to Islam but also to other religions. Israeli state officials and Jews endorsing Zionism is not a good representative of Judaism; Indian state officials and so-called Hindu nationalists are not a good representative of Hinduism, or Dharma; Myanmar state officials and Buddhist preachers who caused the expulsions of the Rohingya people are not good representatives of Buddhism; and so on. 🌏 We are living in the 21st century when we would expect democratic ideals to have rooted themselves in society yet we observe the demise of democratic values globally with the rise of populism, authoritarianism, radicalized political alignments and much more. 🏛️ Our governments are also caught up in focusing on their relations with other countries with a compromise on their values.
