we had a true lost in translation moment with flag signalling today

some background: the international code of signals is used as shorthand for communicating important information between vessels unto this day. everyone carries a flag alphabet for this purpose and you can raise flags separately or together to indicate conditions and requests.

so when my crew mate informed me that the navy boat we were passing had two signal flags up i asked him to relay me the message because i was busy downstairs.

here is what he saw through the binoculars:

the flag on the left is Alpha (I have a diver down; keep well clear at slow speed) and the right one is Bravo (I am taking in or discharging or carrying dangerous goods.) the vessel most likely had clearance divers out to remove underwater explosives and wanted others to steer clear.

however, my beloved crew mate only vaguely recalled that Alpha stands for divers and Bravo stands for dangerous. so imagine my surprise when they hesitantly relayed that

"the navy...wants us to know that their divers know how to fight?"

It was cocky and overconfident to call the Titanic "unsinkable" but one thing that's overlooked is that she was genuinely really, unusually solid. She could float even with 4 compartments fully flooded, which even a lot of modern day ships can't do.

And it's not like they were wrong about her being solid! Olympic, her identical sister ship, survived being torpedoed and then running over the U-Boat that fired that torpedo. Those ships were solid.

It's very clear that absolutely no other ship in 1912 would have been able to survive that collision, and it's a testament to the quality of the ship that she didn't sink in a few minutes Empress of Ireland style. Part of what makes the Titanic such a tragic story is that it isn't a group of rich idiots locking themselves in a shoddy iron barrel to go 4km underwater. It was 2200 people, most of whom were poor immigrants, on a reliable ship on a commonly-made journey, and then something went horribly, unpredictably wrong.

The 2025 Gender Census is now open!

The 12th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 30th August 2025.

It’s short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.

After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.

Just found out what physical therian actually means

I always thought it meant some part of the way your body looks lead the way to your nonhuman identity like those people who grow an excessive amount of hair on their body (Hypertrichosis). I could totally understand how that could help find your way to finding out you're a therian, especially if it lines up like excessive hair and being a dog or a bear or another animal with lots of fur you literally already have all the fur

Turns out it just means a therian who physically identifies as their theriotype. So me fully believing I physically am my theriotypes makes me a physically therian?? Because that is how I feel, this isn't a human body, not anymore. This is the body of a rabbit with some mouse features, not a human. I don't think of myself as an animal trapped in a human body, i think of myself as an animal in my body.

That being said why the fuck do I see so many people hating on physical therians and saying they're not valid?? Like you're gonna go after someone who feels their body is that of a dog or a lizard?? That is the exact same vein as transphobia. That is the same thing as a transphobe going after a trans man for feeling their body is that of a man. It's not like they're lying, they're still therians. They just feel their bodies are what fits in their head just like trans people can feel their body is that of the gender that fits in their head. Just like not every trans person feels trapped in the body of a different gender, not every therian feels trapped in the body of a human, and you're gonna go after them because they don't experience the same pains as you? What does that make you? Cruel and pathetic. It makes you cruel and pathetic to invalidate and hurt other people just because they don't feel the same type of pain you do. Fucking fix it.

Othervague

Defined as an other- (-kin, -link, -kith, -hearted, etc.) identity that either:

1) features confusion between which derivation of identity it is (I, personally, plan on using it because I am unsure whether my -types are voluntarily or not)

2) whose user has a disdain for the boundaries between each term (a sentiment expressed as early as Tirl & Flip Windtree's 2002 article Just Be on otherkin.net)

It's my hope that othervague can be used as both an umbrella term and an identity, like a more narrowly-focused version of alterhuman. One's vaguetypes can be voluntary- if you're gonna try and call someone a faker, you don't get to say "well the definition says xyz and you don't fit it to a t".
