Just in case I haven't told anyone...

Some mutuals and I have created a server on Discord for Zutara Shippers (multishippers are welcome, too!) To share art, fanfiction, and just their over all love for the ships we love (yes, even Taang, Zukka, and Azutara) in a generally safe space. (I say generally safe because there be dragons, and Godzilla is lurking around, too... figuratively speaking.)

Anyway, if you want to share your art, we have channels for that. Daily Fanfic prompts (although sometimes I forget to post them) are available. Weekly art challenges, crazy shenanigans, and much more!

The bigger we get, the more we can do!

Also... we have lots of potatoes... in different forms.

Important notes:

You need to make an appointment 24 hours in advance and come in person.

They don’t allow you to take pictures but can write notes.

But if anyone wants to read it for themselves and are in LA or close by, go ahead and give it a read; I think you’ll be very pleased.

I would also encourage you to read EIP and the finale scenes because… wow. So much validation ZK nation!

But, if you don’t live in the LA area, you’re in luck because @sneezypeasy did that for us and will be making a long post with her findings.

It's time. It's been a long time coming. I finally want to do an ATLA roleplay.

I want to play as Zuko and since it's my first real atla writing experience I'm down for any pairing (platonic or romantic) for now.

Squid Whales

Okay, I just saw some artwork about the "Original Benders" in Avatar: The Last Airbender and was reminded of two facts:

1: There are no original waterbenders like there are for Fire, Earth and Air.

I know that Tui and La are referred to as such, but they are actually the source of waterbending, just like the sun is the source for firebending. (They are also Spirits, unlike all other original benders)

Airbenders have Sky Bison.

Earthbenders have Badger Moles.

Firebenders have Fire Breathing Dragons!

Waterbenders don't have anything like that.

2: Squid Whales (who could be the original waterbenders) aren't actually canon.

And I really wish they were.

Hello, are you looking for a new atla ship? Sick of the ship wars? Consider with me, if you will, joining the zukaang fandom.

Do you like grump/sunshine trope? "I don't know why but I thought this thing would be a lot faster." "Appa's right Zuko, in our group, typically we start out our missions with a more upbeat attitude." "I can't believe this." - literally them.

Do you like the yin/yang trope? Zuko's flaw is literally his aggressive approach to his problems which is foiled by Aang's flaw of passive approach to his problems. They are the definition of yin and yang.

Do you like forbidden love? Even beyond the whole "Avatar and Firelord" thing, they both have to have bio children. They are tragic as hell if you want them to be.

Do you like excessive parallels and reading way too much into symbolism? The writers spent way too much effort in building the parallels between these two and there's always more to say about them.

Do you like shared trauma and similar backstories? They literally had an entire episode dedicated to showing how their backstories mirror eachother.

Do you like (lovingly) making jokes at Zuko's expense? What's better to tease him about than his absolute obsession with the avatar.

Do you like parallels to past lives? Zukaang has simularities with Sozin-Roku and Oma-Shu and there's even Kuzon.

Do you like m/m but never felt much connection for zukka? Zukaang is full of connection.

Do you like being canon but kataang just didn't do it for you? Zuko is literally quoted as being the person closest to Aang in his life and there's an official picture of them holding hands as adults and the culmination of the zukaang hug is iconic just like the kataang kiss. They're like an inch away from being canon.

Do you like enemies to lovers but zutara never caught your eye? Their inevitable friendship was built since book one when Aang asked if they could be friends.

Are you sick of antis? Zukaang has two (2) whole anti arguments: the age gap which is nothing between adults, and the idea that Aang is related to Zuko bc Roku was his great grandfather which doesn't make sense unless you consider Korra and Katara to be married. Beyond that people don't care.

Do you prefer small but active ship fandoms to the big name ship fandoms? Zukaang is right on the border, big enough to be plenty active but small enough to be free of drama and full of likeminded people.

Like talking about your ships but rather do it through group chats instead of tumblr? We have an active discord server.

hello my lovelies today we discuss my big sister @solborealis whom i adore and cherish every single day and i think she needs her very own appreciation post for all the good she has done in the world via the crusty ass zutara server.

if you are not up to date on caz lore, lovely sol reached out to me, @burst-of-iridescent (my now platonic wife <3), and @zutara-galore about the idea of creating a discord server and from there it flourished into the cursed mess of glory it is today. in that time sol has just been the best, muting evil-doers who send the kataang dance at my platonic wedding who shall remain nameless, giving general life advice, and answering any questions i could possibly come up with but would fear to ask. sol is the best and i have proof!

you all need to be aware of how smart sol is

without fail she makes stunning points. just look at how correct she is while being absolutely hilarious i love her so damn much.

sol also maintains order on the server to make the experience more pleasant for everyone (except kgz)

A little out of context gem from Crusty Ass Zutara Server

I just wanna say that while I don't ship either of them myself, I respect that the ships that don't become canon, like Drarry and Zutara, will always have much more powerful and diverse communities than the ships that become canon.

You can't tell me that more people ship Harry and Ginny RIGHT NOW than Drarry, or that Zutara's fanbase is less active than Kataang's. I was in the tag an hour ago while on a megalomaniacal rant in discord, and literally most of it is Zutara things, and it's been like what. A decade? Still going strong off of scraps, huh? I admire it.

When a ship becomes canon, people celebrate in the moment and then move on. You get smatterings of people who re watch the series, and do some doodles here and there. But the ship dies with the fandom itself, because a canon ship is not even a ship, it's just part of the story. And it's not the most interesting part of the story most of the time, especially in a series as richly packed as atla. the romance isn't done that well, it's barely focused on. and that's fine, but it's not the thing atla fans really talk about to this day...

you don't see atla fans talking about how epic the kataang romance is. not really. that whole genocide is bad plot is far more interesting.

But when a ship is entirely nonsensical or only lightly hinted at, or maybe just entirely theoretical but intriguing narratively...

that ship can go on for years.

The lack of content is paradoxically what makes the fandom content even better.

Fans can do anything they want with an empty sandbox, and thus fans become creatives in their own right, constructing a canon that fits their own interests.

And that's far more intriguing to consider because of it.

A Kataanger can write about katara and aang getting married, but canon already did that. How interesting could that really be? the creators did that and it was whatever.

a Zutaran, meanwhile, is writing a whole new story and mythos based on the meager scraps they were fed a decade ago. They're totally re writing canon and reconstructing a narrative about opposing sides coming together in the form of their narrative representatives.

they're red blue shipping, fire and ice/water, sun and moon, enemies to lovers, the sunshine and the grump, bad boy x good girl, learning to forgive, redemption arc, theyre basically dispensing with canon and writing a psychopathic descent into their own psyche.

they're making entirely different stories because they were dissatisfied with an aspect of the one they got.

and frustration/need breeds creativity. it stirs the imagination.

if you were satisfied with your ship becoming canon, you celebrate and then you move on.

if your ship never got its chance...

well. you could spend a life time wondering what if.

and you're thinking well of course a durgetash crack shipper would feel this way... and you're right.

but I'll be here. I'll be here still thinking about durgetash long after the last Astarion x Tav shipper has gone.

it's the small things. it's the blank slate, the holes with potential. it's the little gaps in the concrete of canon, where the most twisted but entertaining weeds grow and can never be destroyed, not fully, not permanently.
