Sometimes something beautiful happens when you find a fun deck tech.
Tumblr media
So I pulled Starfall Invocation in a Bloomburrow pack today, and my first thought was "Hey! This would go great in my Zurgo Helmsmasher deck!"
Now, we all have had some weird intersections of mechanics and flavor(Gingerbrute with Colossal hammer equipped via Sigarda's Aid, as if the angel is blessing her champion, a cookie man, with the world's heaviest hammer). My Zurgo deck fits this profile often, holding 8 swords at once while running directly into wrath of gods like it's nothing.
Tumblr media
However, when I thought to put Starfall Invocation into this deck, I thought of Radahn, who has a very similar aesthetic, and the fucking image of Zurgo yeeting a whole ass star, or better yet, himself, onto the field killing everyone, and then maybe brushing off a teammate to get them back into the fight, is just perfect for him.

Is Squee, the Immortal good? No. Will that stop me from putting him in every Brawl deck i own that's part red? Also no. He is my favorite little guy.

I knowwww, that’s the tricky part! I love the direction Sultai is going now. I am in fact equal parts delighted and weirdly slightly jealous that the vibes of it now greatly remind me of my fall faction on my fanplane.
So our main options so far:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ll be honest. I don’t like this version of Kotis. The +1/+1 counters are nice I guess but mostly it feels like a worse Muldrotha (which is my currently BUG deck). Set Teval I think is very interesting (and Teval themselves is sooooo interesting to me so far, I can’t wait to get into the story and learn more about them). However, especially in commander, I hate permanently exiling my own cards. Maybe that’s short sighted, but I’m not there yet I guess. I’m finally getting used to using life as a resource after all xP. Precon Teval is really cool but I would love them in the 99 of Muldrotha than as the commander.
This leaves us with
Tumblr media
Set Kotis. I actually really like those one! Seems like a fun spell-thief design. This would be fun to play with buffs and evasion! My only complaint is a weird personal thing where I like to avoid commanders that only do their cool thing on combat damage to a player specifically. Feels easy to accidentally voltron and then become a target and then you can’t do the cool thing because people remove it :(
So yeah! Based on the current spoilers I’ve seen, if I were to build a clan deck for each:
Zurgo Stormrender
Shiko and Narset
Betor’s Ancestor’s Voice, OR Felothar
Eshki Dragonclaw
Kotis the Fangkeeper
Decks I am/or are just tempted to make from Tarkir so far!
The for sure! I’m gonna update my Elas deck into Zurgo
Tumblr media
Still gonna be a lot of there same themes, just way more aggressive. Currently it already has a lot of the aristocrat cards and mass tiny token makers. Red will have lots of goblins to make use of a damage doublers, I’m pretty excited actually!
Ok idea number 2, idk if I’ll actually do it but I think Shiko and Narset could make a very interesting aura deck!
Tumblr media
Copy good auras for your creatures, copy mean ones for your foes! I don’T think I have a Jeskai deck either 🤔
The rest I’m not so sure on.
I kinda like Felothar more than Arcades even if I’d rather have the blue. But this version of Betor
Tumblr media
Almost makes me want to merge my Lathiel deck into it….. almost
Not really into any of the Sultai commanders enough to make a deck.
Temur is in the same boat really, except if I ever did want to make a voltron deck I might make her:
Tumblr media
Overall i think we’re getting some fun cards this set :D

Tarkir: Dragonstorm doesn't make any sense from a lore perspective. At least, the previewed cards don't make sense. Like, back in the last two Tarkir sets, the clans were abolished by the dragonlords. They don't exist anymore. Let's take the Abzan for example. Dromoka did a couple of things when she took over. Like the other dragonlords, she banned the old name of the clan, but most notably, she also banned the practice of necromancy by punishment of death. The spirit dragon in the Abzan commander deck reanimating stuff from your graveyard would be treason. And there are no khans anymore, the very word was outlawed by the dragons. I considered that the commander decks were from the old khans timeline, which would make sense with Zurgo as leader of the Mardu, but the Sultai, Abzan, and Temur all have different leaders than in the Khans timeline. The watermarks are the ones of the old khans, too, instead of the new dragon ones.

Is Surrak ok?
So recently, we saw some previews of tarkir: dragonstorm, and among them, we've gotten the chance to see what the og khans are up to after the dragonlord rebellion.
narset and zurgo are back as their faction's respective leaders, and anafenza and sidsi seem to have their own roles in their factions, with anafenza having a carefully tended kin tree.
but for whatever reason, we have seen literally nothing about surrak.
Seeing as how the second half of the planeswalker's guide dropping tomorrow will preview the temur, that might change, but does anyone else find it odd that we haven't seen anything about him?

Okay so Sidisi’s been, in canon, working as Silumgar’s translator while taking poisons from would-be assassins and mixing them together in the cavern where her heart used to be. (Metal)
She’s been waiting for an opportunity to strike, to take back control for the Sultai.
And uhhhh
What better time than now? The plane just got invaded by the most powerful ‘poison’-adjacent villains in the multiverse, at least one of the dragonlords has been deposed and compleated, the plane’s in the midst of a world wide war, would-be khan and dragonlord fighting side by side.
It’s easy to see how Zurgo might win back the mardu. Kolaghan is compleated and probably dead, and he got glory from fighting atop the back of a dragonlord in the biggest battle of the plane’s history.
But sidisi? Sidisi isn’t the type to make an alliance. She’s the type to stab when your back is turned.
I’m just saying… have we seen Silumgar since the invasion?
Hell, even if her assassination attempt failed, omenpaths are open now, perfect escape route.
I’m not saying Magic’s storyline is actually going to follow through on this, I don’t trust them like that. But there’s potential…

Can't believe I accidentally stumbled into making three Voltron decks that have entirely different play patterns.
Zurgo(who can get it) is straightforward equipment Voltron, and he literally demands I attack every turn. Weakness: a five mana commander dying hurts, especially when equip costs are taken into account.
Ygra(who can not get it Jesus fuck) has been a lot of fun, focusing more on killing everyone and giving her trample to assemble a gun I shoot the opponent with. Weakness: Ygra being hard to deal with makes me more likely to hit the archenemy threshold despite not having many blockers. This is not really a weakness.
Cleon is the red soldier(who can absolutely get it) from the new Jumpstart that is basically a more sustainable Zada, Hedron Grinder. Impulse drawing off of buff and aura spells means shes going to fluctuate in how big she gets, meaning she's not as reliable on the Voltron front. However, it also means I can rely on her to support secondary wincons, like spellslinger burn. Doesn't mean she'll sit back often though, as any additional keywords turn her double strike dumpy into an avatar of Achilles.
Overall, very happy with this but would really like to actually finish building something else.
