Gonna be real, between Zurgo and Ojutai, and the new Thunder Junction set, I don't have high hopes for the return to Tarkir that's being planned.

Far below the aerial battlefield, a dragon sat atop a rocky mountain, looming larger than any of the others winged monsters, Phyrexian or no. He gazed upward at the dogfight, sighing as he watched the metallic dragons gain the upper hand on their incompleat counterparts. Then he turned, and glanced down skeptically at the muscular orc standing beside him.
“Zurgo. Are you ready?”
“Uh…” Despite the orc’s toned physique, he wore an extremely anxious expression. “No, Ojutai. I am not.”
“Wrong answer. Climb on.”
Ojutai leaned down, close to Zurgo. But the orc folded his arms and refused to ride the dragon.
“But I’m just a bell-ringer! Even with you helping me, I’ve never even fought a dragon before.”
“Not in this life, maybe…” Ojutai muttered under his breath.
“What was that?”
“Er, nothing. But, though you may not have been born to greatness, I think I can see a glimpse of something great in you. Would you like to see if I am right?”
Zurgo grumbled something inaudible under his breath.
“Come again, Zurgo?”
“I said,” Zurgo growled, “why me? Why not someone else?”
“Because…”
Ojutai’s eyes flicked upwards.
“Because you’re the only khan I could find on such short notice. I would’ve preferred Narset, but needs must. Now, shall we?”
Zurgo again shook his head, even as he begrudgingly clambered atop Ojutai’s back. “I’ll try, sir. But you should probably prepare to be disappointed.”
Ojutai uttered a booming laugh. “Well, either we’ll win, or we’ll all become like those metallic creatures, in body and mind both, and it won’t matter to us, anymore.”
“…Is that supposed to be reassuring?”
“For me, yes,” Ojutai snorted.
Before Zurgo could react, the dragonlord shot into the sky, towards the dogfighting. From his perch atop Ojutai’s back, Zurgo held onto the nearby feathers and flimsy reins for dear life.
Tumblr media
[So, Zurgo in the Dragons timeline is a bell-ringer by name, and presumably by trade, too. I don’t know much about Tarkir, but does that mean in riding Ojutai into battle, he’s basically a custodian or something who got drafted when he clocked into work one morning?]

It seems interesting that Sarkhan who is Mardu born and raised has still not had a white coloured card. Let's instead talk about Narset.
Back in KTK timeline she helped Sarkhan on his pilgrimage to Ugin's grave, and was killed by Zurgo, who continues to be a huge pain in every way. There's something there to be said as well about killing off the female character just to further the plot of a male character, or for shock value.
She gets better though, as in the present DTK timeline Zurgo is not the khan and Narset never met Sarkhan, so she's alive now. Good for her.
The Jeskai also are not a thing anymore (except in the ancient records hint hint) so she is not khan, but a student of dragonlord Ojutai.
From Narset's perspective, this stranger has come along with ideas and stories about a time that never existed. As a scholar and seeker of knowledge, she is intrigued.
I like that she has her own mindset and values, and I see her as a good complement with Sarkhan. He learns her blue values of mastery and information, she sees more of his primal nature in personality and practice.
My idea is to see them as really good friends. Best buddies. Pals for life. I don't see them as a couple nor romantically involved. There's not a large amount in the source material to detail their relationship, in either card or story.
So the dragon-minded Sarkhan gets a logical friend who can ask if he has considered a solution without dragons, and Narset gets an honest friend who is always true to his nature and can see the direct approach.
Narset has many other interests and pursuits, such as the story circle. Press F for Tamiyo. She's a master of martial arts, and enjoys learning more knowledge across many topics.
Really she deserves her own post, but too bad baby I'm all about that Sarkhan.

You could always go off the beaten path to build it to save some bucks! A lot of the pricey dragons are red, so if you flip off tradition and drop red from your list you can do a lot! Syvris, Elminster, Ojutai all jump to mind. Or go for ETB dragons with Zurgo+Ojutai! Just a couple thoughts
oogh i wanna build a dragon typal EDH deck but dragons are so expensive this is dragongirlphobic i think

Sarkhan: So...we have dragons now, that's epic, what else has changed?
Narset: Changed?
Sarkhan: You know, like what happened to the Jeskai and Zurgo?
Narset: Jeskai? The ancient order that Ojutai overthrew? Who is Zurgo?
Sarkhan: You know... big orc guy, leader of the Mardu? Hates me with a passion? Stabbed you with a giant spear...and killed you...
Narset: ...
Sarkhan: I'm beginning to see issues with this line of questioning.
N: Really? You don't say?
S: Ok, well, how about Surrak and Anafenza?
N: Isn't Surrak a Hunt Called for Atarka?
S: Well, he got off relatively easy. What about Anafenza?
Anafenza *Phasing through a wall*: I'm dead...

Throne of Eldraine New Commander Cards
Alright, now that we’ve gone through all the Legendary creatures from Throne of Eldraine, time for all the other cards that might make a splash in Commander. I love this part.
Tumblr media
This may seem like a weird pick, but there are honestly a bunch of Voltron commanders that might be interested in this. I can definitely see it in Sram, Tuvasa, and Bruna builds as ways to go really big really fast. You need some form of evasion, but there are plenty of ways to do that in those decks. But that’s a lot more action than most draft Uncommons get.
Tumblr media
Charming Prince, aside from looking like he’s about to drop dead from Cholera or something (seriously dude, that ghostly pallor is not a good look), is a surprising amount of utility for a 2 drop. Early in the game, the Scry 2 ability is going to smooth out your draws, and later on, he’s all about the flicker to reuse ETBs. I could see him in more casual Brago, Roon, or Chulane builds. But are there casual Brago or Chulane builds anymore? Unlikely.
Tumblr media
More restrictive Oblivion Ring effects aren’t usually something I’m in the market for, but decks that care about Artifacts may be into it. The first one that comes to mind is something like Sharuum the Hegemon or something, and there could be others. Probably not powerful enough for Breya, and Alela has access to better options that are Enchantments.
Tumblr media
Hushwing Gryff variants see a fair amount of play, and this one also shuts off death triggers, which is a significant upgrade, because it hoses two strategies instead of just one. It doesn’t have the Flash to surprise your opponents, but the added utility is probably worth it for decks that want to hate.
Tumblr media
Board WIpes are always welcome, and this one has the added utility of coming attached to a large creature after the fact. The best place for this will be in decks that have lots of ways to return the creature to hand so you can set up loops clearing the board, or in decks with lots of Giants so you can break parity. Kalemne comes to mind as a great home for this.
Tumblr media
True Love’s Kiss has a lot of competition, most notably Crush Contraband and Return to Dust at the same CMC. I think which one you want depends a lot on your metagame. If you face lots of decks that are heavy on the Artifacts & Enchantments, you may want the ones that can hit multiple targets. If you just need the occasional spot removal, getting the card draw might be better. I also like this a lot for Taigam, Ojutai Master decks, since cantrips are extra useful there.
Tumblr media
The Magic Mirror is is a rework of Mind Unbound, a card I’ve never played and probably never will. However, in a deck with lots of Instants & Sorceries, you can get this down for as little as 3 mana, which is way more palatable. If you can back this up with counterspells to keep it alive a few turns, it’ll become pretty potent pretty fast. I can picture it, is what I’m saying.
Tumblr media
Honestly, I’m pretty big on Midnight Clock. I think a lot of people forget that this is a mana rock, and it doesn’t even come into play tapped, so the floor is pretty high right off the bat for heavy Blue decks. Plus, the counters get put on this on EVERY upkeep, not just your own, so it only needs to survive a couple turns before you get a personal Timetwister out of it. I’m not saying it’s an autoinclude or new format staple or anything, but I would definitely be willing to try it out.
Tumblr media
Efficient, flexible removal at its best. Epic Downfall will hit just about anything you want it to hit, other than a Gaddoc Teeg or something. I expect lots of decks to be looking to throw this into the mix of spot removal.
Tumblr media
Foulmire Knight isn’t going to go into every deck, but it’s certainly a contender for Zombie tribal, since he comes with card draw attached. Plus, lots of such decks have tons of ways to retrieve him from the graveyard, so you can get extra utility. I’m putting him directly in my Gisa & Geralf deck, because a fun quirk of their ability is that you can cast the Profane Insight half from your graveyard, even though only on your turn, so you lose the Instant-speed fun. Other decks that could be interested are Varina and The Scarab God.
Tumblr media
Literally everything I said about Foulmire Knight above applies to Murderous Rider as well, except more so. Having a Zombie stapled to a Hero’s Downfall is incredible, and generally a clear upgrade, since the life loss is so negligible. The one kink (well, I shouldn’t presume he only has one) of this guy is that he tucks himself on death, which is a bit unfortunate but probably necessary to avoid him being ridiculous. HOWever, there are some fun things there. First, his death trigger goes on the stack, and can be responded to. So, that means the following:
If it’s your turn when the Rider dies, you can cast Swift End from your graveyard with Gisa & Geralf.
You can exile the Rider and one other card from your ‘yard to Varina in response, and get a Zombie token, which is kinda her thing.
You can get him back to your hand by activating Phyrexian Reclamation or similar with his trigger on the stack.
So yeah, there’s some fun to be had here.
Tumblr media
Revenge of Ravens bears a lot of similarity to other cards we’ve seen before, like Blood Reckoning and Marchesa’s Decree, most of which see very little play. But this one has one important upgrade, and that’s the fact that it gains you a life. As a result, it has extra utility in decks that care about lifegain triggers such as Oloro and Karlov builds, both of which love their pillow-forting. I doubt it’ll see much play, but could be a niche inclusion in decks like those.
Tumblr media
Tutors are great, and this is one of the most unique tutor effects we’ve seen in a long time. They key to this card revolves around breaking parity so your opponents don’t get to take advantage of it. The first way that came to mind for me was to include this in Aminatou, the Fateshifter builds, since she can just flicker it back to your side of the board after activating it. Which seems... gross and awesome at the same time. (I totally put it in my Aminatou build immediately.) Other possible options are Breya, who can sacrifice it in response to its ability, or in decks with cards like Ashiok, Dream Render or Stranglehold, so they just can’t use it. On a really jank note, if you have an Ob Nixilis, Unshackled deck, this is a funny inclusion that punishes whoever you give it to.
Tumblr media
Voltron decks with Red will be interested in Embercleave. So... Zurgo Helmsmasher comes to mind, assuming you’re not going full-on Worldslayer combo. I could also see it in decks like Saskia and things like that. Probably not a major player, but potential for decks that want to go aggressive.
Tumblr media
The clause that you can only cast one more spell after this is unfortunate, but it could still be a reasonable inclusion in mono Red decks like either version of Neheb (the Eternal or Dreadhorde Champion) that want to go big burn. Also, if you have a 7 CMC mono Red general like, Drakuseth, Maw of Flames, this seems like an auto-include. I mean, you need all the help you can get if you built a Drakuseth deck, so...
Tumblr media
Now, hear me out. Looters/Rummagers are great in certain builds, and Merchant of the Vale is unique in two ways. First, he’s got a one shot effect tacked on as an Adventure, which is some added flexibility. But second, he’s actually the only Rummaging creature in mono Red that doesn’t require tapping. Seriously. That means in some big Red Mana decks (like the aforementioned Nehebs), you can rummage to your heart’s content with all the mana you generate to dump into this. Not saying he’s great, but saying he’s worth consideration if you’re in the market for mana sinks in mono Red.
Tumblr media
Obviously, the dream is to cast this off Irencrag Feat, but even if you don’t, this could be a reasonable inclusion for mono Red big Mana decks. (I’m sensing a theme with these last few cards.) Dealing 21 damage is no joke, and I could even see this in some versions of Vial Smasher that focus on big mana production. Again, most decks probably won’t want it, but the ones that do will make good use of it.
Tumblr media
There’s no shortage of ramp spells, and for 3 mana we’re accustomed to fetching 2 lands (see: Kodama’s Reach & Cultivate). That said, this one has some advantages. First, the land it fetches comes into play untapped, which is a nice little bit of utility, especially if you can follow it up with a one drop mana dork immediately after. But it also has a Rubblehulk tacked on for the late game, which is a totally viable win condition in some decks. Would I trade Rubblehulk’s Bloodrush ability for Beanstalk Giant’s ramp? For most decks, abso-fucking-lutely. And this one is mono-Green, so it can go into way more decks. I’d consider it for certain builds of Kynaios & Tiro, Chulane, Azusa, and a variety of other big-mana decks that thrive on versatility.
Tumblr media
The Great Henge is expensive, but will be amazing once it resolves. It adds mana, it draws cards, and it buffs up every creature you land, which is a ton of action. And if you can reliably get this down to 5 mana, you’re in great shape. Big Green Stompy decks like Ghalta will be super into this, and I can also see if for +1/+1 counter decks like Ezuri, Claw of Progress, since those often get big/big with ease.
Tumblr media
While the Transformation doesn’t have the target flexibility of Song of the Dryads, it’s a pretty effective way to deal with annoying Commanders or problematic creatures, and the card draw on ETB is a nice touch. It’s a fun little pairing with Estrid’s Invocation, so keep that in mind if you’re playing Bantchantress or some such nonsense.
Tumblr media
I don’t know what deck wants this, and I honestly don’t really want to know, because it seems ridiculous. But returning stuff straight from the graveyard to play is always a strong move, and buying back a pile of Artifacts in something like Sharuum or Breya is probably a game ending play. The non-Aura line of text makes it a little less appealing for Enchantment builds, since most of the best one are heavy in Auras. Still, I’m sure it will find some homes and be a lot of fun (for at least one person) when it resolves.
Also, somewhere on Twitter (don’t remember where, unfortunately), someone said that this card should be called “Manse Dance Revolution,” and that is absolutely correct.
Tumblr media
Drown in the Loch is versatile removal at a very reasonable cost. All it asks is that your opponents have cards in their graveyards, which is super easy in EDH. The funny part is, this honestly gets stronger the more competitive your metagame, since competitive builds will have Fetchlands and early interaction, plus their average CMC is much lower, so you’ll more frequently have targets. In mill decks like Mirko Vosk or Phenax, you are always running this, and I’d consider it in just about any Blue/Black based deck.
Tumblr media
Green has some better engines to draw cards, but as a quick burst, 5 for 5 is a pretty awesome rate. Plus, I like that the card has some protection against flipping a few lands by at least letting you play an extra one, so worst case it’s an Explosive Vegetation. I’d definitely run this in Wort, the Raidmother decks, because conspiring this to flip 10 cards, then immediately dropping two more lands seems like a solid way to set up a game-ending turn. And if you’re building Gruul in general, it seems like something to consider.
Tumblr media
I couldn’t not mention Nessie here. 6 mana is a lot, but he has a pile of abilities for that 6 mana, and Flash lets him come down at end of turn, so he’s more likely to resolve. In a way, it reminds me of Pearl Lake Ancient, another card I occasionally run as a WTF element in my decks to catch people off guard. They’re both giant serpents, they both have Flash, and they’re both resilient recursive threats. You definitely don’t want to use Nessie’s sacrifice abilities too much, but they’ll be handy if you’re flooded. Plus, he’s got incidental Graveyard hate tacked on, which is actually my favorite little secret of his, so I especially like him in decks with lots of Wheels (Nekusar says “HI!”), as something you can discard for value, then activate to remove problematic cards your opponents may want to recover from their ‘yards.
Tumblr media
3-cost Mana Rocks are never the competitive option, especially when they only produce one color at a time. But 3-cost Mana Rocks with a team-wide pump attached is worth a second look. Mono-color go-wide decks will be interested in this for sure, as well as 2 color decks that consistently produce tokens of a single color, like Alela or Kykar.
Tumblr media
Okay, before I start on this card, I’d just like to say that a lot of the lands in this set are highly playable. Basically all of the Castle cycle are playable, especially Castles Vantress, Locthwain, and Garenbrig. Also, Fabled Passage is phenomenal tech for multicolored decks, and is such an obvious staple, it’s not worth writing about.
Of the Common Land cycle, however, there is one that stands above all the rest. Yes, Witch’s Cottage is basically a better Mortuary Mire in heavy Black decks, so some places will run it. But the big news is Mystic Sanctuary. This card is such the hotness for mono Blue decks and a few others of note. First of all, the potential to combo this with Time Warps is off the charts. I literally cannot imagine not running this in God-Eternal Kefnet decks, because the synergy is so strong setting up your next draw. And lastly, I’m putting it in my Aminatou the Fateshifter build (which runs both the aforementioned cards), because putting expensive spells back on top of your deck is kinda what that whole deck is about. Plus, she can flicker it, which is some stupid-level combo right there.
Brawl Deck Cards for Commander
Okay, that’s it for the main set. Now we get to the cards from the four Brawl decks that have potential for the big time.
Tumblr media
Mace of the Valiant is an interesting one. It’s a Voltron card that wants lots of little creatures to enter the battlefield. That makes it a little paradoxical, but I think there are probably homes for it. Two of the obvious ones are the decks it came in, Alela and Syr Gwyn, but there are certainly others. There’s potential in several generals who have fallen out of favor, such as Rafiq of the Many and basically any of the mono-White cats, like Kemba, Kha Regent, who seems preemptively designed specifically for this card. (Seriously, if any of y’all run Kemba decks and haven’t put this in yet, what are you even doing?)
Tumblr media
Shimmer Dragon is too obvious, but therefore I have to mention it. This will be a format staple for years to come, since Blue-based Artifact decks have always been popular. Yes, it’s expensive, but once it comes out, drawing your deck in short order will be absolutely trivial. Urza decks will love this. Oops, all my mana rocks and constructs are also card draw! Seems good.
Tumblr media
Chittering Witch seems fun, if a little on the casual side. But she doesn’t cost much, and her ability is a pretty reasonable way to snipe down problematic threats as you need. In decks with tons of sac fodder, you could definitely do worse. Endrek Sahr comes to mind as a fun combo piece with this.
Tumblr media
This is definitely more on the casual side, but Red needs more options, and Embereth Skyblazer has some potential. Pumping up your entire team for +3/+0 on each attack can be brutal, and it gets especially interesting in decks that involve multiple combats, like Aurelia the Warleader, or that increase damage dealt, like Gisela, Blade of Goldnight. In short, this is actually a Boros card.
Tumblr media
Steelbane Hydra seems really good, especially in big mana decks (Azusa, Gitrog, Kruphix, Nikya, I could go on...) or in decks that can add +1/+1 counters to him (Atraxa, Marath, Vorel, Ezuri, Ghave, I could go on...). In other words, there are all kinds of homes for this guy, plus: TURTLE HYDRA!
He’s so cute.
Tumblr media
Now, I’ll readily admit that my opinion of Thorn Mammoth may be skewed by the fact that it is absolutely stupid good in 1v1 Brawl. It obviously gets worse in multiplayer and in bigger card pools. But, that said, there are times when this card could absolutely own the board. My particular dream would be to cast an Avenger of Zendikar and Heroic Intervention with this guy out, and just build my own Plague Wind. Because that sounds fun, if a little jank. But seriously, Green can find ways to make this good, and can certainly find ways to cast it.
Tumblr media
Obviously, Knight’s Charge belongs in one type of deck, and that deck is Knights tribal. And in that deck, this will be the best card in your deck. So whether you’re running Syr Gwyn or Aryel, Knight of Windgrace or motherfucking Morophon Knights for some reason, then you’ll run this and you’ll like it.
Tumblr media
Okay, Tome of Legends is a card that nobody asked for, but here it is and if your commander is all about coming down quickly and going sideways, then here’s a card for them. So... I guess... Captain Lannery Storm, we found a card for you?
Tumblr media
Aaaaaand last but definitely first, we have this gem. Arcane Signet. The card that made Commander players everywhere lose their collective shit and buy out every copy of every Brawl deck, jacking prices up to the sky. Way to go us! (Seriously though, I’m totally part of this problem and I fully admit it.)
Well, after many sobering hours of reflection pondering our addiction and the general meaninglessness of the pieces of cardboard we spend literal thousands of dollars on, and hence, the meaninglessness of life itself, we started slotting these babies into decks and forgot all about that nonsense. Because yes, truly, this card is great, and you should always run it.
And if they don’t reprint this in literally every Commander and Brawl product ever printed going forward, so help me...
I’m fine. I swear.
Tumblr media
So yeah. That’s it. All the cards from Throne of Eldraine for Commander. There... sure are a lot of them, aren’t there? It’s like Wizards is thinking about majorly pushing this format or something... :)

its mostly flavor, tbh. theres a few good dragons in those colors, partially cuz of the recent dnd sets, but when i originally built him back in ~2018 the only real options were the two ojutais. if you built him now and you had a big budget, you could include the two ancient dragons in those colors for some pretty hefty payoff. i also think he works well in the maindeck for a zurgo and ojutai deck that wants to run a mix of dragons and spells
i tried so fucking hard to build a commander deck for jeskai gandalf and i am telling you. that card actively resists synergy. its like they tried to design a card with worst possible amount of text to actual effect ratio possible. theres a different UW card that does nearly the same thing as gandalf but better for the same amount of mana and its not even a mythic

Racing against time to get back to the Jeskai Palace, Yasova is forced to fight for her life against her own son, Surrak. Battling her own flesh and blood, Yasova must come out victorious or risk losing both Ojutai and Atarka to Zurgo’s forces. Can she look past her own feelings for her only child to put an end to his cruel deeds?

Tarkir--Broken and Bowed
I think it is past the time for me to answer a very important question. A question that’s hanging from everyone’s lips, here in the mtg fandom. A question so fundamental, so omnipresent in our lives that someone just oughta do it. Someone has to step up and take a shot. And I guess that someone’s gon’ be me, for once.
You already know what I’m talking about, so let’s dive straight in, shall we?
“What will happen next on Tarkir?”
Tumblr media
Ahhhh, we’re back again with this wonderful plane. I don’t plan for this to be a very long piece (Narrator: “it ended up, in fact, long as f***”), I’m just going to give a few thoughts of mine. And don’t worry, this post isn’t going to go near the so-called Dragonlord Discourse (because, spoiler, they’re all bad), we’re talking about events here, not morals.
There are a few things to consider. Firstly, let’s talk about the current state of Tarkir: The Dragons rule the 5 clans, having reshaped them to their will and desires. The humanoid condition is worsened overall on the plane in varying degrees across the clans, but humanoid submission to Dragons within their clan is absolute, there is no current, direct struggle in the internal hierarchy, but there are humanoid behaviors that get directly and mercilessly punished by the draconic overlords. So to say that there is no friction between the two “orders” (I can’t really say species since Humanoids are made up of a variety of species) even within the same clans is wildly incorrect.
Tumblr media
Given this situation, though, there are reasons to believe that a fight could break out between Dragons and Humanoids, with the correct circumstances and timing. Let us not forget that Sidisi is brewing poison to kill Silumgar, Anafenza’s spirit is aiding humanoid soldiers and perhaps will inspire some to research abzan necromancy (the same way Oret did), Narset has discovered The Truth (Jeskai records about the past and the Khanfall), Surrak openly states that he only respects the dragons because they’re stronger (read: if I could kick their butt I would), Arel, a temur shaman, is rediscovering the clan’s lost magic and desires a world without dragons, and Zurgo... well, he ain’t doin’ much at the moment, but luckily we have a former Mardu member in Sarkhan. So we have some potential for rebellions across the clans. In addition, both Narset and Sarkhan are planeswalkers, so they could potentially call in some help on this one, and last we saw of them they were going to meet Ugin and then head to the lands of the Atarka to find out more of their past (did I mention Arel already?). And, of course, there are many other elements to consider, such as the Silumgar Infallibles and their questionable loyalty, the Rakshasas, the Temur elementals... you get the idea.
Before we talk any further about where this could go, though, we must acknowledge the elephant in the room. Or rather, the Spirit Dragon:
Tumblr media
Why talk about Ugin, even though he’s not currently on the plane? Two reasons: 1) he is directly responsible for the Dragon Tempests and 2) with his obsession over balance, the Planeswalker would/will most likely interfere if things weren’t going his way. So, what can we do now?
Firstly, we need to speculate a little bit. Unfortunately, in Unbroken and Unbowed, the story where Sarkhan finally meets Ugin and they try to piece together what has occurred, Ugin does not explicitly state what he thinks of the current state of Tarkir. However, since it seems as though he did not intervene (aside from the Dragon Tempests, I mean) in the Fate Reforged balance (both Orders alive, in conflict with each other + the other clans), we can presume that he found that situation acceptable or even ideal (for whatever reason). In addition, while it is fairly obvious that Ugin wishes for the existence of dragons on the plane (since he creates the Tempests), he also appears to wish for Humanoids to exist, since, to quote Shu-Yun, “He gave us concealment magic, the last time the dragons seemed to be gaining the upper hand.” Therefore, it seems as though both the Khans and the Dragons timeline would not suit his desires for the plane.
So! Let’s take a look at the possible results of the Dragon/Humanoid conflict:
1) Both species exist, locked in an endless conflict (Fate Reforged);
2) Humanoids win and exterminate the dragons (Khans). To be noted, this outcome is only possible if Ugin dies or interrupts the Tempests; and
3) Dragons win and submit the clans and the humanoids (Dragons). Also to be noted, this result was brought about by the sharp uptick in Dragon Tempests (which Yasova states have increased “fourfold”).
With Ugin against options 2 and 3, and his influence over the plane not to be underestimated, what will happen next? Will he try to pit the two Orders against each other again, in order to return to an FrF-like state? My guess is, probably. And with the seeds of rebellion we’ve seen spread across the plane, the conflict is sure to break out. But the real question is, is Wizards going to make Tarkir go back to an FrF state? Or is there another way, a mysterious fourth path?
Tumblr media
You’ve probably already guessed it so there’s no need for me to beat around the bush so much: Coexistence. “Wait but what about the conflict you wanna have a world with no c-” The 5 clans can still go at each other’s throats, what I’m talking about it coexistence between humanoids and dragons of the same clan/brood.
Is there still conflict? Check. Brand new relation at the basis of Tarkirian society? Check. Would Ugin support it? ... maybe. We know that he would not refute it simply on the balance he seems to strive for, since both dragons and Humanoids would be alive, kickin’, and not subjugated. Is it possible to achieve? Perhaps. There are a lot of variables to keep in mind. I’m sure Sarkhan could come around to this idea rather quickly, as the dragons would still be treated with much respect among their clans, they just wouldn’t be a part of a racist oligarchy. But Sarkhan is only one man (although a very powerful and, on this plane, potentially influential one), would it possible to get the clans and the dragons to agree on this? As far as the clans go, I’m going to say... I think it’s possible. We have an element that was previously (in FrF) unavailable, and that is that Dragons are now entrenched in the society of the clans. Back when the shift to Khans happened, Dragons had never been anything more than enemy. Now, while they are dictatorial, it is very difficult for Humanoids to envision a clan completely devoid of them. In some cases (particularly in the Dromoka and Ojutai, somewhat rarer in the Atarka and Kolaghan, quite rare in the Silumgar), there are positive interactions between the two orders and there are Humanoids that view their Dragons, or at least some of them, in a very positive light.
Tumblr media
So we’ve potentially got Ugin and the clans on board. Now comes the crux of the issue: what about the dragons themselves? After all, didn’t they fight until they all died in Khans?
Well, you make a good point. Do we really think that the Dragons, and, specifically, the Dragonlords, would (eventually, and only if they were on the losing side, of course) agree to such terms or would they keep fighting until the end? Do these five look like they’d come to terms with that?
Tumblr media
The answer is, well, no. After a thousand years of being the undisputed rulers of their clans, these gals (and guys) would most likely not accept that. So, uhh... what we do?
But ah, my good friend. The answer often lies in the question itself, and the best answers are the ones that solve multiple problems at once. After all, while the Humanoids may be willing to accept Dragons in general in their new clans, I have a really hard time seeing them become a part of it, even if they wished to. Aside from the massive power imbalance having them be in the clan would create (Who’s the real leader? Some dude that has been khan for a few years or millennia old ex-Dragonlord?), the five can be seen as a personification of draconic rule over the Humanoids (which they basically are), and will therefore be instrumental in the Humanoid rebellion/revolution/whatchamacallit. In what role? Ask question, get answer!
Tumblr media
Killing the Dragonlords accomplishes three critically important things:
1) It gets rid of them. It seems obvious, but, as stated above, they would be a problem. So, it’s good to point it out;
2) It gives Humanoids a sense of purpose and a common enemy (before killing them) and it awards them a significant milestone which will/would be instrumental in ending the war without genocide; and
3) the five are not only tyrants of the clans, but they are the leaders of their broods. By eliminating them, the remaining dragons will be in disarray and more likely to accept some sort of compromise rather than to fight without purpose.
So, to summarize my ingenious plan, what has to happen is: Humanoids get some extra leverage against dragons (that’s where Ugin/Sarkhan/Narset come into play), the already present seeds of rebellion are allowed to grow and flourish until conflict breaks out, which ends with the death of the Dragonlords and a deal between the clans and their respective broods, leading to Dragons and humanoids coexisting.
Then it’s every clan for themselves again, as per usual... but now, with dragons!

If you’ve read all the way so far, thank you so much! I’m glad you found my thoughts interesting enough to do so. I apologize if it got kinda messy at some point but it’s nearly 1am here and I’m quite tired from today. Feel free to reblog or comment with any thought you have on the matter, I’d love to hear them and I’d love to get a conversation started!
See you all next time, planeswalkers, and heed my advice: dragons may act high and mighty, but remember this?

Yeah. Take that, you oversized lizards.

Could we please get a status update on Lords of Tarkir?
Status update is: I’ve written the Abzan, Temur, and Jeskai posts, although I’m not happy with part of the Jeskai characterization and will probably change it; haven’t started the Mardu one but that should be simple; working on the Sultai one. The Sultai are always the hardest to nail down. Plus I’d never actually thought about what Zurgo/Sidisi/Tasigur/Taigam would be doing in the alt timeline, not to mention Sarkhan...I know Ugin’s still in his hedron cocoon like DTK, but perhaps something about his fight changed? And how would the Khanfall have changed? Did Tasigur knowingly betray the others in this timeline, or did Silumgar’s influence plant the idea in his head? In this timeline the Jeskai abandon their monasteries to follow Ojutai mostly peacefully, so there’s no confrontation and general murder of the dragon hunters - so are there still dragon hunters among the UR Ojutai? Lots of considerations...

Narratively it feels really weird that Zurgo gets to do much of anything of import, given the timeline change relegated him to a simple Bellstriker. I get that he's a returning character but why would he get to battle alongside any Elder Dragon, much less Ojutai?
RUHAN HAS A WORTHY SUCCESSOR
Tumblr media
For those who dont know in return to ravnica back in 2012 I made a jeskai combat control deck. Before jeskai was introduced as mtg lingo. Ruhan has proudly helmed the deck for eleven years through all its changes acting as a stalemate breaker, and now we have a worthy successor. Someone who motivates combat. FROM THE SET THAT INTRODUCED JESKAI.

Let’s Do the Tarkir-Wrap Again!
So something I’ve been doing on my own and figured I might well put on here (as well as make another ever evolving post) about the effects of Sarkhan time traveling. Because of how time travel is messy I won’t go too much into what might have happened in the old timeline (what I call it the Khans timeline) but just show what effect (or lack of) Sarkhans time traveling had in the magic lore.
Tarkir
Most of Tarkir was changed due to Sarkhan saving Ugin. To give a very basic summary the dragons storms, while Ugin was in his healing coma, increased tipping the war between the Khans and the Dragons in the Dragons favor. As a result the Khans fell  and where mostly absorbed into their old enemies and rivals Dragons clans, with Tarkir now a world of warring Dragonlords instead of warring Khans.
Narset was a student of Ojutai who later became a planeswalker. In the Khans timeline she was the Khan of the Jeski, her spark never igniting and dying to Zurgo. Due to her planes walking nature in the new timeline anything she does in the future of the story would be a change in the timelines.
Sorin travled to Tarkir and found Ugin in  a hedron cocoon. Sorin breaks open the cocoon freeing Ugin and informing him of the eldrazi return. In turn Ugin sends Sorin to find Nahiri. In the Khan timeline Sorin traveled to Tarkir and found Ugin in his grave. Due to his planes walking nature in the new timeline anything he does in the future of the story would be a change in the timelines.
Sarkhan Vol was never born. But due to his actions needing to happen to cause the change in time, a planeswalker named Sarkhan appeared one day on the world Sarkhan first planeswalked to, thinking he was from a Tarkir of Khans. Because this the events of Alara and Zendikar still happened the same as in both timelines. This made Sarkhan an orphan of time.
No one who was born with a spark on Tarkir ignited it during the time of Ugin and Bolas fateful battle until the birth of Narset. This results in the Dragons timeline not changing outside of Tarkir until the events of the Tarkir block.
Planeswalkers who visited the plane before Sorin didn't have thier fate changed by the shift in timelines. This results in the Dragons timeline not changing outside of Tarkir until the events of the Tarkir block.
The Events of Chronicles Of Bolas won’t have played out.
The Gatewatch
The Gatewatch as we know them wouldn’t have existed in the Khans timeline. Jace traveled to the Eye of Ugin and found Ugin who explained the true nature of the eldrazi and the glyph that was used to killed Ulamog and Kozilek and used to seal Emrakul in Innistrads moon. Don’t wanna get too into time travel mess, but chances are that Zendikar and/or Innistrad would be destroyed and the first five members of the gatewatch might have died as well, showing how much Ugin alive as changed the timeline.
Other walkers
Ob Nixlis regained his spark from stealing power from the hedrons used to try and reseal Ulamog. Unknown if he could/be able to in the Khans timeline.
Tamiyo met Jace who had traveled to Innistrad after talking to Ugin and later the rest of the gatewatch denying membership but becoming an ally of the group and a promise to spread info about them to other walkers. A part of her story circle members includes Narset so anything Narset has told the group is info they won’t have had in the Khans timeline.
Vraska took a Silimgar banner as a souvenir sometime in the past, presumedly she had a similar experience in the Khans timeline and took a Sultai banner.
