My Pet Commander - Thing

I’m not sure whether Thing is a blood relative, but it’s beyond doubt that he’s a full-fledged member of the family. A sentient disembodied hand, even visitors tend to find Thing surprisingly energetic and thoughtful after the initial shock of meeting him wears off. He also exhibits considerable wisdom because he’s quite possibly the oldest member of the Addams family.

Given that Thing plays chess with Gomez, I’m happy with saying that he can fill a spot at the Commander table. Although it’s surreal to watch him hold a hand of cards – what does he look at them with?

Colour Identity: Temur (Green-Red-Blue)

Thing tries to keep other family members out of danger, which is unusual for an Addams. Despite his macabre appearance, he’s nothing but kind and helpful. I feel confident in saying that Thing bucks the trend of the other family members, and his is the only Addams pet deck that doesn’t include black in its colour identity.

Otherwise, Thing is energetic, thoughtful, and curious. He’ll want a deck that fits his myriad interests, so a three- or four-colour identity is crucial. Why Temur, though? Well, Thing definitely experimented with a four-colour deck for a while – until, that is, WotC released a very special Secret Lair drop in late 2023.

Pet Commander: Lara Croft, Tomb Raider

You could say that Thing’s chosen commander is one that favours Equipment, given that he’s Gomez’s sparring partner. Or that Thing is uniquely suited for playing videogames, so his commander is a famous gaming icon. Or that Thing just wants a commander who’s as fearless as he is. All of these could be valid reasons for Thing’s choice for his favourite commander.

But honestly? It’s Lara’s fingerless gloves that do it for him.

Deck Features/Style: Historic Matters

The rest of Thing’s deck cares about historic permanents: Artifacts, Sagas, and all legendary permanents. Lara helps to recur legendary artifacts and lands, so she boosts triggers of enters- the-battlefield effects and the like. With first strike and reach, it doesn’t take too many legendary Equipment cards attached to her to make her a powerhouse on the battlefield, and with her ability she can return them from the graveyard as needed.

Lara is just one part of the picture. There will be plenty of historic-matters supporters, as well: for example, The Sixth Doctor is a powerful sub-commander in this deck given his ability to make token copies of even legendary artifacts. Since this deck also favours legendary lands, Thing gets to sneak in some extra volume on cards that care about the number of historic permanents on the battlefield.

Lara’s attack trigger and the number of legendary Equipment on the board means that this will be a rather aggressive deck. Luckily, Red and Green in the colour identity means cards that can enable additional attack steps. Thing is not a durdler – either get your defence in order quickly or prepare for a game that’s over in a snap. Two snaps, if you’re lucky.
