Zumbi dos Palmares (1655–1695) was a military leader, freedom fighter, and symbol of Black resistance against slavery in Brazil. As the last leader of Quilombo dos Palmares, the largest and most enduring settlement of escaped enslaved Africans (quilombos) in Brazil, Zumbi became a legendary figure in the struggle for African self-determination and liberation in the Americas.

Born free in Palmares, a self-sustaining community of fugitive enslaved Africans (Maroons) in northeastern Brazil, Zumbi was captured by Portuguese slave traders as a child and given to a Catholic priest. He was baptized and educated, learning Portuguese and Latin, but at the age of 15, he escaped and returned to Palmares, where he became a military strategist and warrior.

Under his leadership, Palmares became a stronghold of Black resistance, growing to a population of over 30,000 free Africans, Indigenous people, and even some escaped Europeans. The community practiced African traditions, agriculture, and self-defense, creating a society where formerly enslaved people could live independently. Zumbi led the armed resistance against the Portuguese colonizers, defending Palmares from multiple attacks over nearly two decades.

Zumbi rejected peace agreements that would have required former slaves to return to servitude, insisting on total freedom for all enslaved people. His refusal to compromise made him a target of the Portuguese colonial government. In 1694, after years of warfare, the Portuguese launched a final assault on Palmares, overwhelming its defenses. Zumbi continued fighting but was eventually captured and executed on November 20, 1695—a date now commemorated as Black Consciousness Day (Dia da Consciência Negra) in Brazil.

Zumbi dos Palmares remains a powerful symbol of Black resistance, African identity, and anti-colonial struggle. His legacy inspires Afro-Brazilian movements for racial justice, land rights, and cultural preservation. He is honored as a national hero in Brazil, representing the fight for Black liberation, self-determination, and freedom from oppression.
