#16: Al-Andalus (Continued)
Here we have the next portion of the Al-Andalus neighborhood. The first portion was posted as my 7th sheet. In this sheet we have many things. Parks, highways, large roads, winding streets, grid-like streets, etc. What we also have here is a small "ancient" Muslim village that was incorporated into the main city. In the top left corner/northwest corner we have a large mosque and large souq (market). I tried to fashion the area after ancient Muslim villages and towns in Iberia (Spain/Portugal). There's also a Saray or hotel close by for those traveling through.
Most streets here are named after places in Muslim Iberia and Italy. We have:
Calle Alquézar القصر
Via Càssaru القصر
Via Calatanissetta قلعة النساء
Calle del Zoco السوق
Calle Aljama الجامع
Calle Alcanadre القناطر
Calle Ajimez الشماسة
Calle Huesca وشقة
Rua Almada المعن
Carrer Burjassot برج السد
Bulevar Almuñécar المُنَكَّب
Rua Setúbal شطوبر
Calle Girona جرندة
Calle Guadalevín وادي اللبن
Rua Açafa الصف
Calle Lucena اليسانة / אלי הושענא
Calle Zabazoque صاحب السوق
Calle Arrayán الريحان
These are all real places today!

Viewing Response 2
In the article "Futurism without a Future: Thoughts on the Ministry of Time and Mirage," Victor M. Pueyo Zoco writes that "Contemporary futuristic fantasies resemble our everyday pedestrian life in such a detailed fashion that we sometimes forget that the events we are witnessing are set in the future" (3). The first episode of The Ministry of Time attempts to counteract this issue in part through lighting, as there is a clear difference based on the time period. When in the past, there is a greater focus on candles and dark spaces. In the present, much of the imagery shows fluorescent lights in office spaces. However, it is in scenes with Tiago's deceased wife where the scenes are brightest and filled with natural light. Not only does the contrasting lighting signal to the viewer a change in the time period, but it also implies the overall mood of the scene. When in 1384 between the border of Portugal and Spain, the dark mood signals the impending battle. In the present, the office setting signifies the dullness of Tiago's current lifestyle. It is only in scenes with his wife, such as at the cafe or when he calls her at the end of the episode, where we have natural light that shows a time when Tiago was happy. A difference in the tone of each scene is a critical part of creating a distinction between each time period.

And here are the metro and bus systems for this "ancient" district of the Al-Andalus neighborhood. I like to call this district Alcazaba aka القصبة. We have stations named after places in Iberia and Sicily when they were under Muslim rule.

In Victor M. Pueyo Zoco’s “Futurism without a Future: Thoughts on The Ministry of Time and Mirage,” Zoco identify’s the reason the concept of flying cars and UFO’s suddenly seem retro: we’ve reached the point where we no longer see the future as something dramatically different than our current reality because it is hard for us to imagine a world outside of capitalist society. “When I say that the future looks retro today, what I mean is that the very idea of imagining the future, of translating the future into images, has a vintage feel to it” (3). El ministerio del tiempo (Ministry of Time) (2017-2019) is a clear example of Zoco’s statement as it is built on the concept that the present becomes the future and the past becomes the present. In episode one of El ministerial del tiempo, the main protagonist is asked to time travel to the past in order to preserve the natural order of the present. Furthermore, Zoco talks of El ministerial del tiempo as a neo-conservative work. “it openly roots for the preservation of the current status quo, which is, of course, the essence of any kind of conservatism” (9). This is clearly expressed in the scene when the protagonist asks if it is possible to go back in time to create a BETTER present, his boss suggests that this is dangerous and “time is what it is.” The show even uses the narrative of the protagonists dead wife to emphasize the importance of NOT changing the past and keeping everything as it should.

Sunset breather
|ENG| After a long day of work in her small shop at the souk, trying to earn her bread and butter, laying in her favourite corner and smoking her favourite tobacco was a well deserved rest. |ESP| Después de un largo día en su pequeña tienda del zoco, intentando ganarse el pan de cada día, tumbarse en su esquina favorita disfrutando de su tabaco favorito era un descanso bien merecido.
