sometimes it's more effort to get the sewing machine out and be done in an hour than to handsew everything for 8 hours

Derailing project of the moment, Project "Nephew's Birthday Gift" is... Technically done. Added side seams, because he's turning four, and pockets, because cool rocks exist.
Tumblr media
I also kept the promise of it not taking up much space. It's about the size of a T-shirt, and I'm so very very tempted to just... Buy a T-shirt and play an innocent prank on the birthday boy.
Tumblr media
And then the fiber craft demons struck, in the shape of a very charming man in the open air museum doing a demonstration with five dozen cards and sewing thread on a +5m inkle loom, and I decided nephew needs a knighty belt. Because that's what kindergartners care about: handmade decorative techniques that were available to people in the era. It's definitely not just that he wants a dress-up outfit to boink his brother on the butt with a toy sword in.

Bought a booksleeve at barnes and nobles this weekend for my freewrite- they only had lile two designs and the size was BARELY enough to fit it so I had to fight with the zipper to get it in. Got into the parking lot and thought "I could've probably just made one" and decided that would be the incentive to finally put my sewing machine to use in 2024

ok this is def a 'you can see the demographic of this site aging' post but like...did you know that you have to buy pillow inserts at a bigger size than the pillow covers??? did you????
because i had to replace some pillow inserts and my apparently foolish ass thought 'oh 22" pillow covers -- clearly i buy 22" pillow inserts' and ohhhhnonono that way lies soggy sad floppy pillows!
so bc i dragged a giant bag of 4 pillow inserts on public transport once and i'm not fucking doing it again, i just used some old bedsheets i had around to make three 24" inserts, ripped open the too-small ones and split the fourth one into thirds to make up for the increased space et voilà

Another zipper pencil case!
My partner requested some "high visibility" zipper pouches that we can take camping. I used one layer of Odicoat gel on the exterior fabric for water repellency. I added a lobster claw, and a high-contrast zipper pull.
Modified from this tutorial by Orange Bettie [x]
I didn't print the pattern, I just measured and cut:
11" x 5", two pieces in Exterior and Lining
10" x 4.5", two pieces in Fusible (because my fusible comes in a 20" width and this let me get two pieces from one strip)
Tumblr media
In the Exterior and Lining pieces, measure and mark:
from the long edges, inward by 1 ¾ inches
from the short edges, inward by 1 ¼ inches
you want to cut out the little rectangle you just drew, so I marked it with an X
To make this easier for myself, I used adhesive index tabs to mark these on my Omnigrid ruler.
Tumblr media
On the Fusible, you want the X-ed rectangle to have a 1/4 inch clearance on 3 sides. Since my fusible is somewhat see-through, here's what I did to make it easier: lay the fusible over top the already-marked fabric and centre it. Line up the quilting ruler so it's a ¼ inch inward from the X-ed rectangle, and draw your lines.
Or you could just eyeball it.

[ID: photo of a handsewn Superboy jumper. The base is a bought dark blue jumper. Sewn on top is a red cape, trim and stripes on the sleeves. Towards the top is a red and yellow S-shield. Stripes of lighter blue follow the base of the S-shield and down the zip, forming a Y-shape before branching out a short distance towards the end. /end ID]
thought I might share some more of my cosplay stuff here :)

This zipper bag is... several different kinds of janky (you can see where it's wrinkled/misaligned because I didn't hoop the fabric properly) but it is done, and I think my friend will like it.

So I can't use the sewing machine while I am on call bc audio - ergo I have started to do a lot more handicrafts (crochet, knitting, macrame). My desk looks like a craft store threw up on it now.

Tumblr media
like yeah a serger is one thing but bestie. please. you are missing out on BASIC tools a rotary cutter costs like $7 and makes your life a million times easier (also wdym you dont know how it works have you like. used a pizza cutter lol???) & depending on what projects you're planning/types of fabric you're gonna be working with you should AT LEAST get a walking foot and zipper foot

every time i go to install a zipper, many years after i have previously done one, it's always a 'it can't be as bad as i remember, right?' but no, it's always as bad as i remember, it's always a part of my brain with a giant 🚫 over a zipper that gets bolder and bolder with every time i have to rip it out and re-install it. the first time i have to rip it out i remember that doing zippers on the machine is a special kind of hell, despite what this article tries to tell me. however, this article. (this article!!!)
links to this:
lapped zipper, my slightly-less-beloathed than fly front zipper, where have you been all my life?
i want to cry it's so much better.
lapped zipper, my slightly-less-beloathed than fly front zipper, where have you been all my life?
i want to cry it's so much better. not that this will actually lead to further installation of zippers i'm going back to pre-1920s fasteners. hooks and eyes and snaps may take longer (not if you actually count up how much time i spend getting a zipper in properly. we're on hour 3) to install but even if i fuck one up, it's only one, not eighteen inches of seam ripping.
now i'm sitting with my lovely waxed linen thread and sewing this damned thing in for the third and a half time (one side machine, two sides machine), actually fifth and a half time if i include basting it in.
