Montreal, Canada – Human rights advocates are accusing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government of misleading the public over weapons sales to Israel, which have come under greater scrutiny amid the deadly Israeli bombardment of Gaza.

At issue is legislation that prohibits the government from exporting military equipment to foreign actors if there is a risk it can be used in human rights abuses.

But regulatory loopholes, combined with a lack of clarity over what Canada sends to Israel, have complicated efforts to end the transfers.

Dozens of Canadian civil society groups this month urged Trudeau to end arms exports to Israel, arguing they violate Canadian and international law because the weapons could be used in the Gaza Strip. [...]

But advocates say this misrepresents the total volume of Canada’s military exports to Israel, which totalled more than $15m ($21.3m Canadian) in 2022, according to the government’s own figures. [...]

Noa Argamani, an Israeli woman freed from Hamas captivity in Gaza in June, said on Friday that her injuries were caused by an Israeli air strike during her rescue operation, not by a Hamas attack. Speaking to diplomats from G7 countries in Tokyo on Wednesday, Argamani detailed her ordeal after she was taken captive by Palestinian armed groups during the 7 October attack.

However, two days later, she issued a statement on Instagram, saying that some of her remarks had been misquoted and taken out of context. Contrary to some Israeli media reports, Argamani clarified that she was not beaten or had her hair shaved by Palestinian fighters.

"I cannot ignore what happened here over the past 24 hours, taking my words out of context," she wrote, referring to the Israeli media coverage of her Tokyo speech.

"[Hamas members] did not hit me while I was in captivity, nor did they cut my hair; I was injured by the collapse of a wall caused by an [Israeli] Air Force pilot," she added. "As a victim of 7 October, I refuse to be victimised once again by the media." [...]

Before the genocide, Gaza always had shortages with electricity because a certain amount of fuel goes in each day,so it's common for most homes to have no electricity for a few hours each day.

In recent years, many people, as well as other public places like hospitals, started installing solar panels as a way to generate power more frequently.

Today, israel's carnage is on schools,hospitals, and also solar panels in Gaza city. Israel wants to punish the people who stayed up north and refused to leave their homes by bombing their solarpanels.

Israel also just bombed the energy sources and electricity generators at Al Shifa Hospital, causing a massive fire.

The amount of people who are NOW saying that “Israel” is not respecting international law and that the West needs to stop selling them weapons… all it took was Israel deliberately killing 6 white people.

They strike a first time then when people are trying to help and get the wounded out they strike a second sometimes a third time to kill the wounded and the people who came to help. Palestinians have showed us and told us that the weapons the West send are used to kill them to kill their children to kill innocent people. You didn’t say anything and now they are using your weapons to kill your people too.

Lastly Palestinians but also people of color in general have been telling you that what you allow Israel to do without any consequences will eventually be done to you and people will justify it. And while it’s nice that you are finally calling out Israel none of us will forget or forgive the fact that 40000 Palestinian lives didn’t make you feel anything but 6 white lives did. When 40000 people were killed by Israel the same way as your volunteers you didn’t believe that it happened that way you called Palestinians collateral damages but now suddenly you care? Your support to white supremacy to Israeli supremacy and to colonialism is what killed those 7 volunteers including the 6 white volunteers. You’re just as guilty as the IOF terrorists.

Israeli air strikes on a girls' school in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza, killed at least 30 people and wounded over 100 on Saturday, the Palestinian health ministry said.

Khadija Girls' School was sheltering over 4,000 displaced Palestinians, according to civil defence officials in the enclave. A field hospital was also operating inside the school complex.

“I am so lucky to have survived,” Fadel Keshko, a 22-year-old man who was staying in the school with his sick grandmother and nephew, told Middle East Eye.

“The building I took shelter in was directly targeted. The distance between me and the rocket was just a metre away. I am horrified and terrified.” [...]

Trudeau's best solution to genocide is... assisting it and partaking in it.

1. Stop donating. It’s a volunteer organization so boycotting doesn’t hurt them financially, donations do. It’s a running joke in fandom how quickly the goal is met two, three times over whenever donations are asked for; the joke needs to stop running. Your money will endorse an organization that condones genocide.

2. Contact AO3 Support and Feedback and OTW’s Contact Us to voice your displeasure against this. It’s hypocritical of them to rally against censorship, then proceed to the same.

3. Spread the word. I’ll put my message under the cut as a template of sorts.

It is disheartening to see an organization often lauded for its staunch stance on censorship turn face and commit the same act they spent years condemning. Is it the proper labeling of Israel as an oppressive colonial state that bothers you, or is it your apathy towards Palestinians being ethnically cleansed that made you fire a volunteer for their vocal support of Palestine. Despite what this organizations claims, “From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be free” is not antisemitic; the phrase calls for the liberation of Palestine and for the corresponding land to belong in rightful hands. Shame on you for choosing the side of colonialism. Ao3 was a beacon for many, and now it’s tainted. Another ICJ hearing is starting now in regards to Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories. This is the result of a UNGA resolution from 2022 for the ICJ to give a nonbinding opinion on the legal consequences of Israel's occupation from 1967 to present day.

The Palestinian Youth Movement, which has many chapters and affiliated groups in throughout Canada, decries the terrorist attacks on Yemen by the U.S. and U.K., which Canada has 'provided support' for (Jan 11th 2024). They point out that these attacks coincide with the ICJ hearing against Israel for its genocide, and that these governemnts are mobilizing their ressources to commit terrorist acts against Yemeni civilians rather than to serve their own citizens.

The Israeli military's assault against four refugee camps and almost every town in the north of the occupied West Bank, using battlefield weapons, commando-style helicopter landings, drones and bulldozers, cannot be classed as a response to the war on Gaza. This is far bigger than a "counter-terrorism" operation claimed by Israel. War in the West Bank was planned before Hamas's attack on 7 October last year, a senior Fatah member with close links to security circles told me.  It was postponed by the Gaza war, but also refined and honed by it.  When Israel saw just how much Palestinian blood the US and Europe were prepared to tolerate in Gaza - how much destruction, how many millions would be continually displaced, and for how long - Israel felt emboldened to visit the same hell on its real target: the occupied West Bank.
