Reminders for those applying for zines:
Rejection is natural and will happen a lot! Everyone has different wants and needs for their idea of a finished zine but it doesnt mean your ability is lacking!
Apply! Apply! Don't be shy and just go for it. This continues from my last point but most organisers of zines are willing to give you advice for next time. It can be a helpful insight instead of getting a blank message of rejection.
Portfolios... are the bane of everyone. They can be awkward to keep up with and not everyone's forte but are important! Keep a tag of your work and don't worry about them being all masterpieces. A record of ideas is a strong tool. Use a blog as a virtual sketchbook tour!
Make your own zine! I don't mean high end fanzines you see nowadays just an easy peasy one sheet / 8 page zine! Get an idea for the format and feeling. Play around with your work in print and see what you like about the process! You'll learn a lot taking a break to be in tune with both analogical and digital processes. Electric zine maker is an awesome tool too!
Download/Purchase zines and get inspiration! You can find plenty of free/pwyw zines on itch.io and gumroad for example. Tik tok, insta, etsy and here also have a range of creators who publish their own (mostly previews).
Lastly, keep creating! Keep exploring and pushing your work forward. Let your voice and mind free to speak for themselves and bring interest to those around you :)

Here's an excerpt from my newest comic, "Bigfoot". This comes from the chapter titled "Bigfoot Finds a Turtle". I think you'll find Bigfoot is a sweet, brave, and naive creature. "Bigfoot" was written with kids in mind, but all ages can enjoy this work. If you're interested it will first be released at Zine Fest Houston on September 7 and then online shortly after.

READ DESCRIPTION FIRST There was this really polite guy in the bus, blocking my way out. As he wasn’t reacting to my several “Excuse me’s” I tapped his arm and he finally moved aside with the words “Yea, you don’t need to touch me.” Outside the bus many different possibilities of how I could’ve reacted came to my mind. You got any suggestions?

Bloomurder
Tumblr media
This is a zinester I discovered on Etsy. They have a few different types of zines. They have botanical and literary-inspired zines, as well as poetry zines. If you follow me on Instagram then you already know I am really into poetry, so that’s what I have from Bloomurder.
Spring time pleasures
This one is a mini poetry zine that is spring and flower themed. The poetry is typed on a typewriter and copy and pasted onto the sheets along with images of flowers. A fun touch/bonus: inside of zine unfolds to a flower collage poster. A fun zine to look over multiple times.
Celestial
A poetry zine that features poetry by bloomurder accompanied by some of their favourite pieces of art. Poetry in this collection is celestial themed, it is second in a trilogy of poetry zines, and curated from all the poems they wrote between 1997 - 2016. I love that they included the title and artist for each of the art pieces featured so you can look into it more if you love the art as well. I think my favourite poem in this zine is Refugee.
The Lilac Dreamer
This is a beautifully handwritten poetry zine that features a single narrative poem which includes a few photos of lilac trees, that I believe were photos taken by bloomurder. I really enjoyed this one. They did a great job with the storyline. I imagine they could write really cool short stories someday if that is a thing that is of interest to them.
Vapid
This is a poetry zine which includes poems that feel like moments of lost hope. Each poem is pasted onto a simple background that brings attention to the poem and adds to that stark feeling these poems inspire.
After seeing what a great job they did with their poetry zines it leaves me wanting more. You should definitely check them out. You can find them on Etsy, Instagram or Facebook. You can also email them at [email protected].

[Image description: Announcement for call submissions for zine, All in Your Head features an illustration of a femme presenting cyborg, seated near futuristic white and blue orbs. Cords are connected to the cyborg's mechanical skull as they look towards a starry sky.] Text reads: 'All in Your Head: Queerness, Neurodivergence, and Disability Zine. Call for Submissions! Queer Crip Futures. Deadline: December 1st, 2017.']  Call for Submissions! All in Your Head is a queer/feminist traditional cut-and-paste style zine with a focus on LGBTQIA neurodivergent and disabled activists, zinesters, artists, and authors. Our zine operates on the following *principles: 1.) social inequality and injustice exists [racism, classism, ableism, heterosexism, cissexism to name a few]; 2.) disability, neurodiversity can be understood as a viable form of human difference that intersects with/is shaped by systems of dominance; 3.) claims that there is a “normal” bodymind can have damaging and harmful effects (physically/emotionally/spiritually) and are partly shaped by current social/cultural values and white western colonial histories; 4.) neuroatypical people and people with disabilities must navigate cultural taboos, move among complex institutions and systems of care and negotiate conflicting ideas of “wellness/illness,“ “silence/disclosure,” “visibility/invisibility;” “dis/ability” and more 5.) most importantly, our stories matter. (*this list is by no means exhaustive) We are seeking submissions for issue #7 of All in Your Head. The theme for this issue is: QUEER CRIP FUTURES. We accept many kinds of submissions including: short stories, essays, poetry, rants, manifestos, music playlists, book reviews, doodles, drawings, resource lists, opinion pieces, photography, collage (and more!) that address this theme. If you don't see your idea here, send it anyway! It may just be the thing we’re looking for! Keep in mind that you do not need to be a “good writer/artist/poet” (whatever that means!) to participate. We want to deconstruct and dismantle elitist gatekeeping and restricting access to publishing for disabled, neuroqueer folks. Possible themes/topics for this issue: -Visions for social, cultural, and systemic change from the perspective of queer, disabled, chronically ill, and/or neurodivergent people -Accessible technologies -The future of disability activism -Bio-medical ethics and technological developments -Eugenics, disability, and the rhetoric of futurity -Science fiction and disability, gender, race, class, sexuality etc -Activist/artist projects that address the theme Crip Futures as it relates to queer disabled, neurodiverse communities for our activist spotlight column. Send all submissions to: [email protected] Deadline: December 1st, 2017. Word limit: Please try to keep submissions around 1500 words or less. This is to ensure that all folks who submit have a good chance of getting published. Please send with your submission: Bio (optional), descriptions of any images you sent (high res please!), and any links to your work and artistry (optional). All contributors will receive a free copy and are free to publish elsewhere (we do not own your work!).

WHY DO YOU MAKE ZINES?
Hello fellow zine makers!
I am wanting to get into your brain about why you make zines....it’s for this thing I’m doing (it’s not a zine).
If you could email me a paragraph or even just a sentence or two explaining  why you makes zines and what the process means to you, that would be amazing and super nice of you

Our Zine Reviews is a series of online interactive zine reviews with zinesters and zine collectors both locally and internationally. These will be ongoing commentaries with selected Zinsters on their zine collections/libraries. Each episode will form part of our online interactive activation, which has been inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic that the world is currently going through. Our live video chats will be hosted by Minenkulu Ngoyi, Co-founder/Director of Alphabet Zoo; and will take place for about 20 minutes, depending on the number of zines reviewed and discussed. Each session will begin with an introduction of the guest/zinester who will talk to you all through their publication or collection. Once that is done the discussion will be open to the public to interact by commenting and having a Q&A with the guest.
