How to have festive decor without compromising the planet

‘Tis the season for all things bright and beautiful, but when it comes to one festive tradition, well, is this the year that we really do cancel tinsel? Tinsel, along with glitter, shiny wrapping paper, ribbon and other holiday trimmings that will be on the earth longer than our great grandchildren, is certainly losing its shine.

"Tinsel is usually made of fossil-based plastic, mainly PVC, which is currently not easily recycled," explains Daniela Bqain, manager of sustainability engagement at Stora Enso. "This means that it often ends up either in the landfill or into incineration. At the landfill it does not readily degrade and during this long degradation process it releases toxic chemicals into the environment. Toxic chemicals are also produced if PVC ends up in incineration at end-of-life."

The shift toward more sustainable and environmentally friendly festive decorations can be charted on TikTok, where the hashtag #sustainablechristmas has more than 3.2 million views and on Instagram the hashtag #zerowasteholidays is another source of inspiration. It’s not all brown paper and twine either. Indeed the tinsel will hardly be missed.

Zerowasting IRL 🌱 : Never buying a bag of powdered sugar again! Seriously, the easiest zerowaste recipe ever! . . . 🧁 1 Cup sugar 🌽 1Tbsp corn starch and blend! . . . In almost 2 years of being zerowaste, I’ve NEVER seen confectioners sugar in bulk. I did a little research and it turns out that powdered sugar really is just finely ground sugar. Put it in a food processor with some corn starch to help it grind down, and bam💥! You have yourself a winter wonderland of powderly, snowy white, confectioners sugar. . . . With the holiday season coming up, I hope this tip helps your baking! After all, dessert is the really the best part of a any meal. 😋🍰 . . . P.s. Holidays involve a lot of large gatherings. *Looks at calendar, sees Thanksgiving, Friendsgiving, and holiday parties four weeks in a row* 🙃 When hosting a large dinner, there’s a potential for creating A LOT of trash! But it doesn’t have to be that way. From planet-lover to planet-lover, we’re here to remind you that the convenience of single-use plastics are not worth the lasting negative impact it leaves on our environment. . To avoid the post-holiday trash guilt. Here’s a few tips for zero-waste holiday: 🌱 Hosting? Easy! Use your everyday dishes, silverware, and cups for your large meals. If you don’t have enough for everyone, tell your guests to bring their own! Nothin’ wrong with a lil BYOD (bring your own dish should be a thing) 🌱 Not hosting? Offer to bring the non-disposable plates, utensils, and cups! Bringing secondhand dinnerware from the thrift store will be a better alternative to plastic forks & paper plates. After using, you can save for the next occasion! Be the guy who brings dishes to the party! 🌱 Encourage your family & friends not to use single-use, opting for regular dishes, silverware, and glasses instead! Offer to be the person to wash the dishes, it’ll be hard for anyone to deny that offer 😉 .
