While on the Maligne Lake Road in Jasper National Park with a view looking to the northwest to a sunset with sunlight breaking through some clouds off in the distance. My thought on composing this image was a very simple one in creating a layered look with the nearby forest to more distant mountains, leading up to the sunset in the clouds. Metering was a little more involved in trying to get an exposure to not blow any of the highlights, while still being able to pull some of the more shadowed areas later on in post production. The caption is from a quote I came across several days later on this trip in Glacier National Park. In my mind, it definitely seemed to sum up a feeling with a beautiful sunset.

I haven’t seen this western - I probably should - but I certainly don’t hesitate when I get the chance to listen to the soundtrack.

James Newton Howard is rightfully one of the very biggest names among the film composers. (He scores the movies of Night Shyamalan, amongst others.)

In “News of the World”, he went for a full orchestra with some western elements - a banjo and fiddles - thrown in occasionally. (Or no banjo at all. I found no mention of a banjo player in the booklet, only of a harpist. Stunned, I started some Google searches and found out that some talented harp players can imitate the banjo by plucking their instrument. Is that what happened here?)

Don’t expect the “epic�� music that usually accompanies galloping horses but a more intimate sound.
