Vaggie: I get that every time I order a sandwich at Subway. Charlie: Pfft... what do you mean? Vaggie: It's like... if there's somebody... but like... everything about Subway is... is, like, infuriating. Charlie: Really? Vaggie: Yeah, it's like... *flashback to every time Vaggie was at Subway (in Hell)* The people in front of you take to long, and, like, there's no drive thru, and like... *end flashback* It's just all... I dunno, I'm over exaggerating, obviously, but Subway is like, the land of inconveniences. Charlie: Yeah, it's... I mean... Vaggie: It's like... (sighs) I have to be... okay... and they're like *flashback* "What do you want?" and I'm like, "uhh, sweet onion chicken teriyaki foot long on flat bread," and then they're like, "what bread?" "flat bread," and they're like, "oh, okay." Then they're like "did you say foot long?" "Yes, I said foot long." *end flashback* Charlie: Yeah, and like... Vaggie: "You want cheese?" Charlie: You already have so many bad experiences with the place that it, like, it becomes self-fulfilling prophecy. Like, the second you walk in, they're like, "hi, how can I help you?" and you're like, "UGH! With this shit again!" Vaggie: Not this again! *they both start laughing, flashback* And it's like, "you want cheese?" "Yeah, can I get, um... swiss cheese?" and they're like, "what kind?" and it's like... fucking... Charlie: Yeah, you know, the kind I just said? Vaggie: And they're like... "toasted?" and it's like... "you can't have the flat bread and not toast it!" (A hellmate videotapes Vaggie on their phone, showing a sign on Vaggie's ass that says "PROPERTY OF CHARLIE MORNINGSTAR") "It's like, spongy, gross, starchy-ass fucking bread! It's meant to be toasted! Of course I want it toasted!" And then, they fucking toast it, and they start helping the people behind you, and it sits in the toaster for twenty seconds longer than it's supposed to, and I'm like, "I JUST WANT LUNCH!" Charlie: You are... *continues laughing* Vaggie: And then they fucking take it out, and it's like another person, and you have to fucking get a read on their personality, and it's like "goddammit!" And they're like, "what do you want?" and I'm like, "uh, spinach," and they just... fucking... destroy it with spinach, just, like, an avalanche of spinach. And I'm like, "I want, like, five other vegetables! You can't just fill it up with spinach and think that's all it's gonna be! Charlie: *continues laughing* Wow! Wow. Vaggie: And then, I'm like, "onions," and they're like, "okay!" And they put like, two onions on it. And I'm like, "MOAR ONION PLZ!" *the girls continue laughing* And then, when you get some weird combination of condiments, like fucking, "can I get mayonnaise, and also, sweet onion sauce?" And they throw up their eyebrows a little bit like, "woah." Charlie: "Woah, woah." Vaggie: And I'm like, "don't fucking judge me! I'll eat what I want! I can make my own sandwich at home!" *end flashback, the girls continue laughing* Charlie: "Don't fucking judge me!"... Wow!

Overworld Chapter 28 - Bitter Reunion

This chapter is following Link and Marela as they're headed to Zora's Domain to get the Zora's Armor that Marela made when she was younger so Link can proceed to Nayru's Temple. It follows a conversation in the previous chapter, Overworld Chapter 27 - Ebb & Flow, that Link and Marela had about some of their respective backstory stuff, but Marela's is more relevant to this chapter as it's the first time she's been back to Zora's Domain in a while and this meeting will require her speaking to her aunt and ambassador of the Hyrulean Zora, Natuma.

It goes. About as well as expected.

There are other beats in this chapter, like some teases at Link's past and the acquisition of the Zora's Armor itself, but the conversation with Natuma is the big beat of the chapter. It's very much Marela overcoming her fears to help with the quest, but also as a beat for herself in leaving behind her past as both a former priestess apprentice and as a child of nobility bound by station. And it highlights part of her skillset to the team, and that is as Zelda's chief socialite and gossip starter. Marela negotiates the Armor out from Natuma by using status against her. And it's her particular cunning that makes her such an asset to the team!

Overworld Chapter 36 - Hearthside Chat

Jumping ahead to the Din's Temple arc, it is at this point that Zelda is traveling with the main party for a bit so she can see one of the temples firsthand. Following some building tension between the princess and hero, the party stops in an inn beneath Death Mountain to rest since it's too dark to continue on that night.

What proceeds is a fireside chat with the inn's keepers, Khadla and Constant, around a meal that Link makes for the group. Some preview at the troubles in the region, questions about the two innkeepers, and Link definitely not getting flustered about Zelda complimenting his cooking. Sorry, Robin, we're in disguise. Man nearly chokes himself shoveling a rice ball in his mouth to avoid thanking her properly.

And then he goes and sticks his foot in his mouth with that end bit.

This was a really cozy chapter to write! Good food, warm atmosphere (proximity to volcano not included), cute warm fuzzies with the duo as their dancing around totally not accepting that they like each other. It also managed to give me the set up for a "jelly donut" joke, which is always a win. The name then is very literal in this case, they are chatting around a hearth. But a good comfort food chapter none the less!

Overworld Chapter 63 - You're My Hero

Unfortunately, not Zelink. But yes for sentimental absolutely! This chapter is when Link finally gets to tell his family about being the Hero, both the act and, now that he's drawn the Master Sword, the truth. It is a recovery chapter from Overworld Chapter 54 - Uprooted for him too, a first attempt on this conversation that goes terribly wrong and leads to a fight between him and his father when Link can't explain what happened and what the act was.

The name was picked for Floan, Link's sister, who is over the moon about the news because she's 10 and her brother's the Hero and that's the coolest thing since ever. Lance, his dad, on the other hand, is having I think a very real parental reaction (or as best as I could emulate) to finding out his son is tasked with the very dangerous (and not necessarily survivable) task of saving the world. And considering the terms in which he found out, very mixed emotions on it.

Floan and Lance are integral to MoaH as motivators for Link. They're the reason why, even after Link is actually for realsies proven to be the Hero and it's not just an act, they chose to keep the story going to keep the two identities separate. His family are just people. Lance is a retired mercenary, disabled and working as a florist. Floan's ten. They can't respond to the world in the same way Link or his companions can, and they're part of what he's fighting for to protect. The Zelink in MoaH is a fun plotline, and they absolutely defend each other. But his family was there first and they remain a core of who he is. He needed them to know.

Link was trembling in Zelda's arms, not sure what to do, not sure how to stop the tears pouring down his cheeks, not sure what she even wanted of him now. He didn't remember anyone ever touching him like this. It… was almost painful in a way that wasn't due at all to pressure on his injuries or the ache of hunger in his belly or the thumping headache caused by trying to replace sleep with stamina elixirs.

"Princess," he slurred out through a tight throat. He'd called her Zelda before and he wasn't sure that was right.

He wasn't sure about anything any more. Since he'd woken up in the Shrine of Resurrection and heard her voice he'd had one purpose: save the princess. Kill the Calamity and save the princess.

He'd done that.

Now what?

Did he go back to being her dutiful knight? Was that what she wanted of him? He didn't think he knew how to do that any more. He wasn't who she remembered. He didn't think he ever could be again.

Trembling himself, he slowly put his arms around her. She squeezed him a little tighter and a shiver went though him, warm and cold all at once.

He wasn't used to hugs. Since he'd woken up nobody had hugged him.

It… it felt strange. Good, but strange.

She snuggled impossibly closer, still crying into his shoulder.

"I'm so sorry," she mumbled. "I… I'm sorry, I…"

He shook his head. He was the one who had failed. He coughed to clear his throat and struggled to get the words out, hating how difficult it was to be articulate. He hoped the sound of his voice wouldn't disappoint her.

"It… 's not… your f…fault," he managed at last. "You t-t-ried… so hard."

She sat back on her heels, sniffling and wiping fruitlessly at her eyes.

"You… fought all alone… so long," he said slowly, the words coming out so rusty and awkward. "I… I'm sorry. Should… should've… protected you. Took… too long. Sorry…" His breath caught and he swallowed, trying to sniff back his own tears, trying to yet again put aside the hunger and pain and exhaustion. He didn't know who he was any more, but he could try to go back to being her knight. He could try.

"No," she said. "No, don't… don't apologize. I… I don't even have… the right to ask for help… when… it's all my fault. All of it." Her voice cracked into a wail and she buried her face in her hands again.

"No!" he rasped out.

"My father… he always said… I could… if I really wanted… And he… he was right," she said between sobs. "If… If I'd just…"

Tentatively, he put his arms around her again and guided her head back onto his shoulder. He didn't know what to say. He wanted to somehow express that her father's words had been cruel and unfair. That he knew she'd tried as hard as she could. That he had no explanation for why she had finally found her power when she had. He wanted to tell her about the memories of her he had clawed back together and what he'd seen of her pain and her longing, but the words slipped off his tongue and out of his mind as they always did.

At last, as she got too tired to keep crying and her sobs began to ease, he managed, "I remember… the Spring of P-Power. You… really wanted… t-tried so hard… I… believe in you. Did your b-best."

"No." She hiccupped. "No… I was capable of… of using that power… so the… the fact it didn't work… means I wasn't doing my best…"

For a moment a memory sparkled up out of the darkness in Link's mind: listening in helpless silence as King Rhoam berated Zelda yet again.

Father, I'm doing my best! I really am and you said that was all anyone could do!

If you were doing your best, you would have unlocked your power by now.

He blinked and was back in Hyrule Field again.

"Link?" Zelda had pulled back again and was looking at him in confusion.

He shook his head and swallowed hard. "M-Memory," he said. He swallowed hard and scrambled over words for a moment, once again struggling to articulate what he wanted to say.

To his relief, she just laid her head on his shoulder again and said softly, "Take your time, it's OK."

"I… remembered… your father telling… you th-that. That thing you j-just said. And… he was wrong. You always… did your b-best. D-dont rem… remember much, b-but I remember th… that."

There was a long pause, during which she didn't move from leaning against him. At last, she said, "You really think so?"

He nodded. "Did good."

She laughed, though it turned halfway into another sob. "I did good?"

He laughed too. "You did good."

And suddenly they were laughing together instead of crying, though he wasn't even sure what they were laughing about. He was so tired and he guessed she was too. He didn't know who he was any more or what he was supposed to do now, and as he remembered how driven she had been to unlock her power and how much she had been forced towards that as the only purpose of her life, he guessed she felt much the same. There was really nothing to laugh at, but still they laughed and cried all mixed up together until they were worn out, leaning on each other. Link's head and stomach and throat all ached. He felt a little dizzy as the last of the adrenaline faded from his system.

"What shall we do now?" asked Zelda, sounding as lost as he felt.

"Eat?" he murmured without thinking.

She laughed again. "Oh, Link… I… I am hungry, actually. Oh, I'm hungry." Another hysterical laugh. "A hundred years and I wasn't… but I didn't need to eat." Her breath caught. "I'm going to… I'm going to need so much help getting used to… being alive again."

He pulled back and dug in his pouch to pull out a perfect egg tart that he'd made at the last stable when he was preparing to make this final approach to the castle. He'd thought at the time it was probably a waste of space that he should use for another elixir - and he could have done with another mighty elixir in the battle - but had made this instead, with some premonition that he'd want it. And now he knew what he wanted it for.

"Oh!" she exclaimed as he handed it to her. "For… for me? These are my favorite!" She looked up, eyes shining. "Did you… remember?"

He rubbed the back of his neck. He didn't want to lie to her. "Not… really? Thought… might want… something." He could feel himself blushing. "And thought of… this. It's for you." Maybe he had remembered, even if he didn't know it.

Her eyes were still bright as she took a bite, but then she closed them with a long sigh. "Oh… Link, thank you so much," she said.

He smiled back, his heart full despite his exhaustion and hunger and the pain of his injuries.

He'd done it. He'd fulfilled the oath his former self had made. He'd saved the princess. He'd defeated the Calamity.

He didn't know what to do now, but for the moment it was enough.

4. a story idea you haven't written yet

i have an idea for a sequel stretch for TFTK, obviously, that isn't gonna launch until the main story is done. what's gonna happen? i won't tell you. maybe they all die. maybe they all retire the war to play hyrulean mario party. maybe we finally get him pre--

... anyway. there's also a zant/link WIP i have bubbling away somewhere that takes place after TP ends and zant's vengeful spirit, stuck in the light realm, goes to bully the one who foiled his plans. and maybe after i finish eow i will write something with dohna and zelda because they're just SO cutes.

22. do you ever worry about public reaction to what you're writing? how do you get past that?

i can't say it doesn't WORRY me, i just don't let it stop me whatsoever. i have plenty of cards up my sleeve to soothe myself with. TFTK is my first ever longform fiction so if it's clumsy, well of course it's gonna be, i have never written something like this before. if someone decides to take my writing in bad faith, then well, too bad, i know what i meant when i wrote it, and someone else's thought of me isn't my problem. and if people don't like my story choices, all i can say is, LOLLLLLLLLLL. feel free to write your own! in fact, i will happily read it!

26. are you able to write with other people around?

NOT EVEN A LITTLE BIT! i need my perfect silence chamber or nothing happens. editing is fine though. but do not ask me to formulate prose when there are people speaking in my vicinity

27. your favorite part of the writing process

dialogue comes to me easiest and is often what ties my drafts together, but the most fun part is finding little hooks in my prose to make mirroring events and foreshadowing and overall EVIL AND EVIL sneaky little plot events. i love brainstorming

28. your least favorite part of the writing process

there is none. i love every bit of it. every tedious thing has its ups and downs. editing takes ages, but it's also very fun. don't like it when it takes all day though, and when i become overly critical of my prose. making behind-the-scenes summaries and planning chapters is a menial chore, but it's also a great way to keep track of characterization and suddenly come up with interesting new plot hooks. literally the most rewarding creative hobby there is. i have fun!

My Birthday

Yay, today’s my birthday! I turned 28 years old! And avoided the dreaded “27 Club” where some of the biggest musicians from the 60s’ and 70s’ died when they were 27 years old! (They mainly died due to massive drinking, doing drugs, etc.…)

My 27th year on this planet was not a good one. Early this year, I quit my toxic part-time job at a well-known pizza restaurant that I won’t name. I got scammed into paying for my own equipment for a new job I thought it was a job, but wasn’t. So, I lost over $2,000 because of it and I have to freeze my credit scores to keep the scammers from opening any new credit cards under my name! Then there’s the fact I can’t even find a job that would even hire me due to both my disability and my limited skill list! I even got rejected from getting Disability (or SSI); two months later because of the fact I even had a job!

At home, my youngest niece graduated from high school in June and instead of going to University, she’s working a full-time job at Sally’s Beauty in order to save up money to buy her own car since the car her mom gave her last year and it‘s too expensive to go University right now. My only nephew started 11th grade last month, which means once he graduates in 2025, mom’s planning to sell the family house. She told me and my older sister this back in March/April where after she sold the house; she’s planning to (probably) move to Oregon to get away from the politics of conservative Texas and to retire. Of course, we’re going to move with her as she’s planning to buy land and build a condo house where my sister and I can live on one side of the condo.

For my hobbies, on the other hand, they’re doing great! I beat over 15 games this year, which include “Pokémon: Emerald”, “Hypnospace Outlaw”, “Fire Emblem: Three Houses - Cindered Shadows DLC” and “The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog”. “BAD END THEATER” became the first Steam game where I 100% all the achievement. I preordered “Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” a few days before it came out in May and played it on release day. I remembered staying up all night going around Hyrule, completing the Shrines and not being dicks to the Koroks who only wanted to be reunited with their friends. I’m looking forward to the release of the remaster of “Super Mario RPG”, which comes out in less than two months! I saw four LPs of the game in the past and played it myself for the WiiU. I can’t wait for it to come!

My webcomic is going along. I just finished Chapter 9 and I’m currently taking a small break from it to focus on making this site. I changed how I publish my comics, where I used to release 6-7 pages at a time. But now, I have changed it to 2 pages per week, which means I’ll get more views compared to what I did before. I’m planning to post the links to my webcomic here; I’ll have to find the motivation to do so.

I also made a Tumblr account in June after Reddit decided that they're going to start pricing the 3rd party apps that use its’ code (Apollo, you will be missed). While things are great on Tumblr, I have to get used that most of everyone there is very left-leaning compared to Reddit, where everyone is either in the center or right-leaning, depending on the subject. Yes, I know there are left-leaning people and subreddits there, but it’s the right-leaning groups that are the ones who make the headlines. At least the fandom on Tumblr is way nicer compared to Reddit, where you get attacked for saying or doing something that the fandom subreddit doesn’t like. It’s the reason why I was too scared to either post or comment on Reddit.

Then early this month, I made a NeoCities website and learned how to code again after 11 years. It’s not easy and sometimes it’s even frustrating when you want to do something cool to your page and the code won’t work! At least coding is a skill I can use when I try to look up jobs since it’s one of the most important skills that businesses need. And I also started to blog to write about my thoughts as well. I’ve been doing it on Tumblr for a while, so now I have two sites to pour it all out.

As for what I will be doing for my birthday, it’s not going to be much as I tend not to ask for a lot. I know mom normally gives me a $50 Amazon gift card so I can buy something nice for myself. And I already have plans to make brownies for desserts since we have so much flour and a huge box of brownie mix is in the cabinet.

So yeah, my 27th birthday wasn’t that great, but it could’ve been worse. I hope my 28th year will be a little better and things will improve.

2022 What I’m reading list

I didn’t read a lot of fic last year, though I sure bookmarked a lot. My plan this year is to actually set schedules to read the things I’ve wanted to, but had not forgotten whatever reason. I’m trying a long fic a week, with whatever one shot float me way, so here’s how I started the year. I plan on updating this post as I go.

Set pre Calamity, with slightly aged up characters. WIP chapters 9 of 19 are posted

Murder mystery set in Hyrule castle. There are some great OCs, especially Zelda’s cousin. Canon characters also have a lot of complexity to them and read well. At the moment, there’s been an assassination attempt on Zelda, a murder on castle grounds and it’s set against a huge festival with nobles arriving from all over. There’s the flickers of slow burn ZeLink starting. Last updated 10/31/21

Completed post Calamity. There’s a disclaimer on this fic about its word count that honestly kept me away from it for a very long time, though I’ve enjoyed other works by this author. I realized I’d been jamming along on other fics as long or longer in a week, so I plunged in. It’s got short chapter which help if you’re still worried about the word count.

Anyway…this is pretty much Link and Zelda working through the BOTW DLC and falling in love as they go. I liked that just as I was going omg would they just do x, they pretty much did x the next paragraph. This is also a really good example of some very hot writing with no one getting naked. That’s hard to do. Anyway, I really enjoyed this and I’m looking forward to starting the sequel as it ends with a bunch of unanswered questions. There’s also a lot of Zelda dealing with her own Calamity trauma. I feel like we see a lot about Link dealing with it, but Zelda often has her crap unrealistically together.

Rhoam tries to get Zelda some friends.  It’s very confusing.

When they had finished at the spring, Rhoam gestured Zelda on ahead of him, and she beamed before darting off.  Before Link could follow her, Rhoam held out a hand to stop him.  Link had a larger role to play than he knew.  Or at least he might if Rhoam was understanding the Spirit of Calamities Past correctly.  Zelda needed to feel love.  And she already loved the boy.  She just needed to recognize that and let herself feel joy.  How they dealt with their relationship was his business (it never had been) and he didn't want to know.  But the forced distance that he witnessed could not be helpful.  Purhaps with a push.  This could set some things right.

"You and the princess have grown close in recent months."

As protocol dictated, Link did not meet his eyes, but he nodded.

"She trusts you."

Another nod.

"She cares for you."

No response.

"I'm glad.  She needs people she can confide in.  She needs people who will protect her and encourage her and comfort her."  Having heard himself say that, he recalled Urbosa's words.  "I suppose, I should be there for her also.  And I will.  But it's different with someone her own age.  Someone she could...consider a friend."

Even without meeting Rhoam's eye, Link looked confused and terrified.

"I know she tends to hold people at arm's length. Propriety and duty is a heavy weight.  And she can be prickly in addition to being far too obsessed with her own interests to be understood."  He cleared his throat, because that wasn't really what he wanted to say.  "She'll try to maintain a professional distance.  But I believe it would be better if she did not. I would aid her if she made deep and honest connections."

No response.

Rhoam tried again.  "You do try to support her, do you not?"

The boy nodded.

"You pick her up when she pushes herself too hard.  You encourage her when she feels at a loss.  That is admirable and important work.  Perhaps more vital even than your work as a Champion."

Link stared at the ground.  It was kind of annoying.  Why was he not nodding enthusiastically and expanding on Zelda's many great virtues?  Maybe Rhoam was wrong in his assessment of Link's character.  Or his intelligence.

"She must be made to feel worthwhile and supported.  It is your duty to show her kindness.  To remind her of all Hyrule has to protect."

Link nodded.

It occurred to Rhoam that Link was too bound by duty and protocol to speak to him, which was a bad sign, given he was giving the oy permission to bend protocol a bit.  Hmmm.  This did not bode exceptionally well.

Rhoam cleared his throat.  "I approve of your friendship," he said.  "You have my blessing."

The boy's eyes widened, and Rhoam nodded, his mission accomplished. Turning on his heel, he set off towards the festival.

Behind him, soft as the wind, or maybe it was the wind--maybe it was the breath of the Goddess--came a whisper.  "What was that?"

The Report Card – Fantasy High: The Seven Ep 3

Let’s Split Up and Look for Clues! 

Welcome back to the Seven and the Museum of Adventuring. My previous pronouncement of combat was a little premature but hold tight, we’ll get there. For now, we’re back with Antiope who just saw a glimpse of the Ending of Things (aka, Ending) and is freaking out a bit. She tells the others and they all do various checks to see what they can find out.

Ostentatia casts Commune With City and clocks that there is some kind of abjuration shield magic on the government buildings in town, stopping them from being spied on. She also clocks some lingering undead-ish magic and a weird divination effect on Antiope, specifically on the Aguefort logo of her jacket, like someone scryed on her and just got that she had something to do with Aguefort. At this, Penny reminds her that the only true piece of info they gave Ending when they broke her out is that they were from Aguefort.

Sam with a 19 Insight still feels the connection she and Ant have with Ending because of their spells turned against them in the initial encounter. Yelle does a Perception check (27) and once again doesn’t really get bad, dreadful, menacing vibes. But also, she recognizes that she’s chill with a lot of things most people don’t love. 

Antiope reiterates that she texted Charity that she’s interested in the internship so she can learn more info--even better now that they know the buildings are safe from scrying. Yelle remembers Aguefort’s warning about people watching them and Sam asks Zelda if her “weird boyfriend” (“he’s actually really cool”) is friends with the elven oracle. Zelda says yeah, they’re both friends with Adaine, she can ask about any weird divination stuff. Sam makes sure to specify she should look into TK but NOT Ending, no doubt remembering what happened when she tried to do a spell on her. 

It’s been a big day as Zelda says so they all go to the TGIF-esque Slappy McFinnigans to celebrate (which Sam has problems with--the fact that they’re celebrating I mean, but she’s mainly ignored). They’re quickly kicked out because Katja can’t help herself from trying to brush the mane of their centaur server and they reconvene at the more their speed SlamBurger, where a horse can fully destroy a soda machine to absolutely zero reaction.  Zelda says that Ostentatia was right in that they should all do the quest because it doesn’t close any doors and they have the 2 weeks to figure things out. They all seem a bit more on the same page (though Sam is still pretty frosty towards Ant) and start making plans.

Before they leave, Yelle pulls aside Ant and Sam and says hey, first of all, you two are still linked to Ending from before. Second of all, I know y’all are Going Through It right now and you don’t have to talk about it or make up right away but you need to get your heads in the game and you need to know that you’re both loved and still family. 

Penny, Zelda, Katja, and Ostentatia go back to the museum to try and get more information for their quest. Katja goes to the information desk (horse in tow, of course) and just starts asking information about TK. She’s told that she’s one of the museum’s benefactors and has been missing for years, and hey, do you understand that a museum’s info desk is about where the water fountains and exhibits are, not just random information about the world?

Ostentatia bails her out by calling her over so she can do her plan which is just to walk into the back area like she owns the place. Now, Aguefort students do have a certain level of clearance to be back there and she does have her school ID. But instead of explaining that, she tried to use her Earrings of Diamond Charm to charm the employee she runs into which fails. And then she does a pretty good tag-team lie with Katja about how they NEED to pass a class but that doesn’t fly. Then Ostentatia tries flirting which ALSO doesn’t work. Zelda at this point steps in and just headbuts the dude so they can book it away. I personally would have gone with, “Do you know who we are? We killed the dragon that’s your current main exhibit,” but you know. No backseat adventuring. 

While this is happening, Penny is stealthing like a pro, looking for anything Arcana related. Ostentatia and Katja also did checks (O getting a nat 20) and we’ll go through all their info gathered now. 

Katja basically gets info on TK we kind of already knew. She was a benefactor of the museum. She’s centuries old like Aguefort. She was concerned with consciousness and divinity and specifically how will and divine will manifested, as well as elemental magic.  

Ostentatia gets a lot of info with her Nat 20. She gets a full map to the temple where TK went which is called the Temple of Earth Defiant. The point of the temple is that it’s up in the open air and harsh winds--wind being a symbol of chaos and unpredictability to dwarves--but they still use it as a place to honor their heroes and they rebuild and upkeep it despite the erosion and how hard it is to get there. It’s hallowed from evil and lots of stories about it involve heroes racing there for sanctuary. It was made by dwarves but it’s a pilgrimage site for other primordial beings like goliaths and earth genasi (which is what TK is). There are 3 heroes who have big statues here: Asha Hammerheart (a SUPER dope name I must say), Yvonna of the Sundering Hills , and Kora Ironbrow.

Penny finds that, amongst Kalvaxus’s hoard there were 7 unrecovered artifacts--the Mirrors of the Eidolons (which are the smashed mirrors they found it seems). Eidelons are kind of like the elemental plane version of angels/celestials. They’re primordial (remember Katja saw primordial language on the wall of the dragon cave) and kind of aligned with things like titans and genies. Raw element with no agenda (unlike celestials and demons and such which have a clear alignment which makes up the D&D religious system). It is said by wizards--who look at these things in more of a nuts and bolts way than say clerics who take the fuzzier religions view--that Eidolons are the hands of the gods because gods are beings of spirit--how could they form the physical world. Will of the divine manifested by elemental beings? Sounds right up TK’s alley.

Sam decides she’s desperate enough for information that she calls her mom who she is understandably snippy with. Her mom gives her a contact to talk to when she asks about TK but Sam stonewalls her on show business talk. She tries to play the “mother knows best, you’ll thank me later,” in a kind of Gothel-y way while acting like anything in the past never happened and says Sam is attacking her but when Sam accuses her of neglect, she proves her right by hanging up the phone.

Sam then calls the number and it turns out to be Lola Embers (Fig’s agent) who has been waiting for Sam’s call for ages and wants to talk to her, even though she’s currently chasing her dog across the park. She says she met TK once at a genasi woman networking thing and also says she once saw Charity get into an argument with TK over government funding or not getting a grant or something similar. She then says she’s in a lake trying to get her dog and Sam, being a water genasi who can breathe underwater and also a fundamentally good person even though she’s currently being aggro as hell, goes to the park to help her. Lola assures her that if she’s ready, she’ll help her get new acting gigs and that the world is ready for the new her. 

Yelle meanwhile casts Speak With Plants on some trees near TK’s office and, after a super stoner to stoner conversation, gets a magical footprint trail of where she ran off to when she absconded 12 years ago. 

Antiope (who is in a sports bra because she destroyed her top with the Aguefort logo since that’s what was pinged, revealing in a wild, nat-1 fueled retcon that she got a tramp stamp reading “Leader” in the Red Waste) goes to see Charity to fill out some paperwork, ingratiate herself, and perhaps get some info. Charity has her hot, young, assistant (who Antiope is instantly crushing on) give Ant his shirt (and Charity’s lack of surprise at seeing his 4 horses pulling a chariot tattoo makes the group think they’re def banging). She kind of explains what the Ministry does and Antiope boils it down a bit to snitching on other adventurers. Charity says it’s more of a who watches the watchmen situation and visibly twitches when she has to say the word “snitch”. 

When she takes a second to call Antiope’s dad, she accidentally leaves a tab open on her computer which has TK’s file open (probably up from when the Maidens asked about her earlier). Antiope sneaks a peek and learns that the artifact that TK stole is called the Legendarium Extrodia and it tracks quests. It seems that at some point TK must have had top level access to get her hands on it. It also shows that TK was marked for assassination (which seems like a pretty good reason to get the heck out of dodge). Brennan also says she’s learned enough that she can use the L.E. if she finds it. 

At this point, Yelle tells everyone to come back ASAP so they can follow the magic footsteps. Antiope wants to come but doesn’t want to burn bridges with Charity (or chances with Preston--equally important) so she, at Katja’s suggestion--pretends to have diarrhea and is Nat 20 convincing. Interesting choice for the end of the first meeting with a person you’re crushing on. But Preston is actually pretty supportive as she races out the door as fast as possible.

The Seven follow the footsteps out of Solace and it becomes clear that TK was headed to the dwarven temple Ostentatia learned about. This is a multi-day journey so Cinnamon sings a glorious, magical, horse song and summons mounts for everyone which I will now name because this is obviously the most important part of the episode:

Crucial info. 

As they travel, Antiope casts Primeval Awareness and gets that there is something ancient in the mountain. They travel through Pilgrim’s Pass (a village area most travelers to the temple pass through) but find it completely razed to the ground. They investigate. 

With an 18 Survival check, Antiope finds tracks that seem halfway between dog and cat. There are more than 4 legs and it’s hard to tell how old they are because there’s not a lot of rain in the area. They could have been left long ago and been undisturbed. Regardless, these are clearly from monstrosities. On a 26 History Check, Katja knows that this area used to be protected by Blink Dogs (teleporting dogs) but they seem to be all gone now. On a 22 Nature check, Yelle sees a weird feather made out of plant material. It seems like fae stuff but bad vibes. On an 18 Insight check, Sam knows this was a purposeful slaughter.

And on Penny’s 30 Arcana check, oh boy. Penny finds broken common scrawled on the wall in human blood talking about a queen of the mountain who rules the skies. That only the queen may see and none may see themselves. And that the people were told to destroy the seeing glass and did not obey. In from of that message is a bear hide covering something magic. Penny lifts it with reckless abandon and sees tons of mirror shards.

Friendship bracelets! She thinks.

Gotcha bitch, the thing in the mirror says.

Uh-oh.   

Penny calls over her friends to let them knows she may have made a tiny mistake. The group is pretty split between, “Understandable,” and “Girl, WHAT?” In her defense, she did try to cast Friends on the person on the other side of the mirror shards but that’s not enough to stop an entire pack of 50-60 Displacer Beast (magic tentacle cats)/Blink Dog hybrid monstrosities along with the Harpy Queen (voice from the mirror) and her plant feathered harpy minions to start rapidly making their way to their location. 

It is at this point that Ostentatia remembers that abominations and monstrosities cannot step into the temple which means it’s time to RUN. 

And NOW it’s combat time. 

The premise of this fight is that the girls are on their horses, moving towards the center of the temple as fast as they can while fending off the closest enemies. I won’t give an exact play by play but the two highlights are as follows:

Yelle conjures up a bunch of geese with raptor stats (...so normal geese) to swarm the head cat/dog abomination and has to do a truly stunning amount of math for which she is rewarded with SEVENTY POINTS OF DAMAGE. 

Antiope does some insane arrow trickery and gets the Queen Harpy in the wing (which Ostentatia helpfully gets on video so she can show Preston later) and then forces her to take damage as she falls. If not for an extremely lucky Box of Doom nat 20, she may have been down for the count. Antiope still comes away with more than FIFTY points of damage on her though. 

And we end the episode mid-combat! We will catch up on our girls next time!

Penny: Most Likely to Make Friends During a Hostage Situation 

As a companion to Danielle’s superlative last episode, Penny gets this award for reading or misreading every situation as an opportunity to make friends or make friendship bracelets for the ones she already has.

Did you guys notice that with Katja having Cinnamon and Charity’s assistant being Preston, that’s two of the main pet NPCs from A Crown of Candy?

Antiope’s Reaction to Yelle Saying That Maybe Things Ending Isn’t So Bad: Rail against the dying of the light! Why are you OK with this?

Penny’s Reaction to Yelle Saying That Maybe Things Ending Isn’t So Bad: Entropy is TERRIBLE! Everything needs order!

The greasy cashier’s response to Ostentatia’s flirty, “Come here often?” is “To my job? Honestly no.” Brennan? Chef’s kiss. 

My other fave line this episode is from Sam. “I believe Cinnamon fucks.”

It’s very cute that Penny is like, “I gotta text Riz about this Eidelon stuff!” Not because she wants help. Just so they can geek out together. 

The joke that Brennan didn’t think about the birds is so funny considering all the bird facts in Misfits.

Also re Birds attacking: “They made a movie about this Brennan!” 

Good on Ant for refusing an Aguefort sweatshirt from Charity when offered after the little scrying incident before. Remembering things like this saves lives. 

It has been brought up several times that Ending isn’t necessarily Bad just Ancient and Powerful and I trust Yelle’s vibe check but also, like, a forest fire doesn’t have malice behind it but it can still devastate a city while it clears out dead trees that need to be cleared, you know? Not ready to start wild speculation yet but I am curious. And am similarly curious about the sisters Ending has mentioned. Oh and the parallels of 7 Maidens, 7 mirrors. It’s all there, we just need a little more info. 

Honestly, get you a man who will see you rushing out of a building, loudly claiming to have diarrhea, and instead of being grosses out will just supportively confess his own stomach issues. I wish he was just a little younger cause I want that for Ant. 

I do like that D20 has been playing a little more fast and loose with the RP ep/combat ep format. I think it really helps with story flow. 

In this episode Antiope and Brennan as various non-Zelda NPCs rolled 2 Nat 20s. O rolled one. Ant rolled 1 Nat 1--which was on a self imposed roll to see how she responded to Sephie’s tramp stamp improv. And O may have rolled one for initiative also but I wasn’t sure.

A big, messy Linked Universe playlist

Link for Links

Heavy on the angst, because of who I am as a person. (At the same time, don’t take it too seriously, man.)

Influenced by canon, manga (TP Link is really Going Through It™ ), my personal perceptions, and popular fandom canon.

A pretty wide variety of genres, with a bias towards metal and prog rock.

I kept snippets of lyrics for most songs, also because of who I am as a person. (Some were particularly hard to narrow down to just one verse or chorus.) Those - and a little more rambling - are under the cut if you really want, in the order of the playlist. But. It’s long.

I didn’t initially make this with the intent to share, but hey. Throughout my past year+ of listening, I’ve been haphazardly adding songs to a playlist I very creatively named Links. If something reminded me of them, whether through the music or lyrics or both, I threw it on the playlist, so some songs might seem odd or vague. Some are really on the nose, as subtle as a sledgehammer. (Sky for Sky? Dude. Sorry.) Some are there because of a fitting line or two that stuck in my head. Ultimately, music - like any form of creative expression - can be interpreted in a multitude of ways. 

My listening habits and tastes are erratic, which is why this is one big, jumbled playlist and not separated for different Links. Not to mention if I did that, some (Wild, Legend) would have a lot and some (Wind, Four) would have none, both because of my own familiarity with them, and because of the general themes of the music I tend to listen to. Most songs are a general ‘hero’s spirit reborn’ mood, anyway - those are the first part of the playlist. The second half is more nuanced to specific Links, plus a few Ganon vibes.

Alright, I think i’m done BOTW 2 spamming for today. Anywho, time for some thoughts in general!

1) I hated how the shrines in BOTW were so cold and dark compared to the bright and lively nature outside (I wish they had all looked like the Master Trials challenge where there were trees and stuff incorporated inside), so I hope if we’re forced to have dungeons they’ll be more like the Wind Waker ones. 2) I hope they don’t make us use the grappling hook or anything like in Wind Waker to move around the sky islands (I hated that mechanic). 3) I’m probably one of the few people who wanted less Zelda and more of the Champions in HWAOC since i’m only really attached to BOTW (and we saw a fair amount of Tetra in Wind Waker)/apparently Zelda’s been sidelined in all the other games, so i’m hoping in vain that we get more Champions material in BOTW 2. Also, Link could stand to have some more cutscenes centered around him as well (the few we got in some of the sidequests in BOTW were great). 4) I only really somewhat care about Riju and Sidon, so I won’t mind if the new gang gets sidelined in BOTW 2 (I still think Nintendo wasted the found family/band of brothers aspect on the dead characters--I love them so much and they’re all I want!! The problem is, they’re dead and I don’t really care all that much about their replacements!!! I dunno, maybe i’m hampered by the fact that I can replay the original champions’ memories whenever I want/read their diaries, but I can’t rewatch the new gang’s cutscenes AKA i’ve forgotten their characterization since they don’t talk to me much now that the game’s over). It’d be great if they have some weaving storylines in BOTW 2 that will get me more invested in them, but currently i’m not that interested. 5) Speaking of which, I know it’s 100% not going to happen, but goddang if I don’t want the Champions to have been returned to life. Nintendo totally squandered HWAOC by not making it a true prequel/canon to BOTW (the Champions Ballad confirmed that the Divine Beasts had trials in order to be synced to the champs, so the new gen use of them wouldn’t have happened without that + Mipha thought Link had changed in BOTW yet says in HWAOC that he hasn’t changed + some scenes like “Champion Revali’s Song” never happened at all/got replaced with alternative scenes that really changed some dynamics + basically all of Revali’s time-relative characterization from his diary/pre-100 years of solitude got thrown out + I feel like Daruk got totally sidelined), so i’m still craving that Champions content. Also, I feel like it’s totally unfair that Zelda came out of 100 years totally unaged while everyone else died. Life seems to really suck for people in the LoZ universe who aren’t chosen by divine powers. 6) They’d better keep it open world and non-linear. I can’t go back to being forced to backtrack/trudge through things, I just can’t. BOTW was everything i’ve ever dreamed about in a game (truly open world + non-linear + interactive + meaningful story + lots of outfits + beautiful landscapes) with Skyrim previously being the only thing that came close to what I wanted, so I really hope BOTW 2 doesn’t deviate too much from that. 7) I really liked Kass in BOTW, but i’m not sure what direction they’d go with him in BOTW 2/i’d be fine if he sat BOTW 2 out. I worked so hard to complete all his quests in BOTW so he’d go back home to his family, GODDANGIT, KASS. 8) Someone mentioned that since the first trailer had underground aspects, we’re probably going to be playing as Zelda with the Slate there, and I agree. They didn’t make a playable model for her in HWAOC for nothing. 9) I want to be able to stable the deer and bears and stuff, but I know that won’t happen. Being able to ride the moose and rhino things from the Hebra area probably won’t happen either, but I want to ride them!!! 10) I hope there’ll be at least a few new buildings and stuff in the towns/they’ve started construction on some areas in Central Hyrule, but I guess that’ll depend on how long it’s been in-universe since BOTW. Or maybe not, considering how there’s still Karson and Hudson even though Bolson retired from Bolson Construction--insta-towns like Tarrey Town could totally be feasible if they wanted! 11) I have one foot in the camp that believes there’ll be time shenanigans in BOTW 2. HWAOC totally threw me off with it being an alternate timeline, so i’m not sure whether we’re going to be experiencing that again or time travel itself, but I definitely won’t be surprised this time around if Nintendo goes that route again (and it would be super interesting to see the Link from 10,000 years ago). I’m not entirely convinced that the Link we see exploring the sky in the second trailer isn’t our Link, mainly because he seems to still have on the blue boxers from BOTW. 12) I also heard that maybe this will be the last LoZ game ever since something something Demise something Skyward Sword something something lore from games i’ve only vaguely looked into (i’ve only ever played BOTW --> Wind Waker --> HWAOC)??? If so, it kind of sucks that I came in just when they started making games with playstyles palatable to me (I had to look up every single thing when playing Wind Waker, but BOTW let me solve things according to MY logic/I missed being able to explore in HWAOC), but at least it’ll end on a super high note/I won’t experience later disappointment, I guess. If BOTW 2 involves breaking the reincarnation cycle for the Triforcers, I would be really surprised. (On a related note, Nintendo making Ganondorf good would also be a 100% shock to me, but it would be great to end on that as a subversion. Yes, I want them to bring back the semi-complicated Ganondorf from Wind Waker.) 13) I hope they don’t rush releasing it. I heard they pushed back BOTW originally (I got it in 2019), but it came out fantastic for it! I know COVID’s been affecting things, so I really hope they’re treating their staff right and are mindful of crunch. 14) I want even more outfits (there seem to be at least two new ones, if the variant of the Hylian Tunic crossed with Link’s Champion’s Tunic counts). Give me all the outfits!!! Also, I hope we get even more hair variations in addition to the hair down option (which is all i’ve ever wanted since I saw the mod that altered the Ancient Helmet). 15) I wonder if we’re going to get a bonus for having both BOTW and HWAOC save data. 16) I wonder if we’re going to be keeping the Champions’ skills. I’m going to miss being super overpowered, if not. 17) I hope Nintendo doesn’t cave in and make surfaces climbable in the rain. Having that limiter is more realistic and Link would otherwise be too overpowered with a super climbing ability. 18) I liked BOTW’s scattered music that got more noticeable in populated areas because it was fitting for the post-apocalyptical/nature aspect. Hearing your footsteps in an open field and the buzzing of insects was super nice and prevented me from getting music fatigue (which i’d probably experience since whenever I play BOTW it’s for 5-10 hours at a time). I hope Nintendo either keeps that or makes audio options. 19) I heard that BOTW 2 is going to be super dark or something, and i’m okay with dark, but not GRIMdark, so I hope it doesn’t go that far. From what we’ve seen in the second trailer it still looks beautiful, but I hope it doesn’t do that thing that some games do where after the midpoint/a certain story point all the scenery permanently changes to be dark and scary (that’ll seriously hamper post-game playability for me if so). 20) If they expand on the Zonai, that would be super cool! Doubly cool if the time travel shenanigans involve them/ancient Link being one! 21) I kind of want windstorms to be a weather feature. We had lightning, heat, and cold, but no wind! No, I don’t count the wind geysers and the occasional breeze in Tabantha. 22) I want a chest in my house to hold more weapons than just the gear mounts. BOTW only had enough mounts for the champions’ gear, but it also had rare items like the Kite Shield and Forest Dweller’s Sword that you can’t get anymore once you use them up! 23) I want to be able to stable my horses at my house. What’s the point of that little area if you can’t stable your horse there! 24) Speaking of Link’s house: where is Zelda going to live? If the castle’s not reconstructed, it’d be neat if Link adds an extension to his house for her. 25) I hope they open up part-time jobs (think Mabinogi) as an option to earn rupees. Having to hunt for Luminous Stone deposits or feed Trott to make money can be such a chore. I think some of BOTW’s minigames/sidequests might count as those, but those minigames were either frustrating if your goal is to earn money (since most of them cost money to play in the first place and the mechanics weren’t always easy), or didn’t earn that much in general. 26) I wonder if Kilton is going to have updated items since the monsters seem to have changed. 27) I want to be able to dive underwater (mainly so I can explore the beautiful reefs over at Lurelin). A dive meter like the one from Super Mario Sunshine would be cool. Also, it’d doubly be neat if you had a separate stamina wheel for swimming and could permanently upgrade your swim/diving stamina (the speed+ swimming items just consumed your stamina faster, which was a pain)! 28) It’s definitely too late for this, but it’s a shame that the Hylians have so many face/body/hair and outfit variations, but the Zora, Rito, and Gorons don’t. The Gerudo were kind of okay with the hair and body variations, but the other races seemed to have a serious copy-paste problem. I guess technically some of the more important NPCs (ones with quests/cutscene triggers) had different coloring, but they were severely lacking in clothing variation. Also, the only old Rito was the elder??? At least the Gorons and Zora had some old folks besides their leader walking around. Very weird, but I don’t think BOTW 2 can fix any of this. 29) I wonder how they’re going to do the final boss battle, considering how epic/cinematic the BOTW 2x battle was. What can top fighting (on horseback, no less) a giant, flaming boar made out of malice? 30) I wonder what the Yiga are going to be up to, considering how Ganondorf seems to be somewhat kicking in BOTW 2.
