Maybe my name could also be known
That I helped return good to the people
And restored greatness to Rome

Inuyasha - Chapter 16 of 559...
Chapter Index
Sesshomaru is lovingly gazing at Tessaiga and thinking of all the demons he can kill with this sword.
Tumblr media
BUT OH HO HO WHAT'S THIS?!?! Tessaiga's barrier has rejected Sesshomaru and the sword won't come out!
Tumblr media
Inuyasha arrives on the scene and goes after Sesshomaru. Sesshomaru taunts Inuyasha about wanting the sword. Myoga, however, determines that Sesshomaru could not pull the sword out himself!
Tumblr media
Inuyasha, however, does not give a shit about this sword. (This is probably the LAST time we're going to be able to say that.)
Tumblr media
At first, Inuyasha tries to fight Sesshomaru in hand-to-hand combat, but Kagome's reasoning on why Inuyasha should take the damn sword already wins Inuyasha over.
Tumblr media
While Inuyasha can GRAB the sword and hold onto it, it still won't budge.
Tumblr media
Myoga Squash Count: 4
Tumblr media
Sesshomaru goes after Inuyasha while Kagome goes to prevent Jaken from aiding Sesshomaru. Jaken throws her off of him and she grabbs Tessaiga and accidentally...pulls the sword out of the stone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, Sesshomaru wants Tessaiga, but can't touch it. Inuyasha doesn't care about Tessaiga and CAN touch it, but can't take it. Kagome can touch AND take Tessaiga, but can't use it. I love how everyone has a completely different relationship to this word, and the sword also wants what it wants.
So, this is a tangent...
I'm not recommending you actually read the Elric of Melnibone books because I don't think they're actually that good, but if you are familiar with them, I think that Elric and Sesshomaru share a lot of physical traits, as well as having a lot of the same characteristics. Elric is an albino with white hair, he's royalty, he has a feud going with his cousin Yyrkoon, AND these two cousins fight over two demonic swords (Stormbringer and Mournblade). (Yyrkoon is a total bastard and is nothing like Inuyasha, btw.) There are a lot of differences, since the two demon swords in the Elric stories are bad news, while the two demon swords in Inuyasha (Tessaiga and Tenseiga) are good swords, but they also have a lot of things in common. The Elric swords can suck souls into them. The Inuyasha swords can suck demonic powers into them. Also, Elric of Melnibone was big in Japan in the 70s because Yoshitaka Amano did the illustrations for the books' release. I think it would be very interesting to see how these stories percolated in the Japanese imagination and showed up in the 80s and 90s in other stories.
Also, Michael Moorcock, the guy who wrote the Elric books, has this idea of The Eternal Champion and The Eternal Consort. The Eternal Champion is reborn again and again and can never truly die, and he/she will always fall in love with The Eternal Consort, who is reborn again and again, and their love every time is thoroughly doomed. (Hmm...reincarnation and doomed love... Interesting...)
Anyway, Elric of Melnibone has a lot of interesting and cool ideas, but at the end of the day, the stories are not well written and it seems like the author kind of wants to just write the same story over and over, so he made a multiverse where he can justify writing the same story over and over. I mean, do I read fanfiction about two idiots falling in love over and over and over again? Yes. But is the fanfiction more interesting and better written than most of Moorcock's stuff? Also yes.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAANYWAY, yeah.

There's always the business of getting friends to do it.
I remember an article in "Epic Illustrated" (Marvel's clone of "Heavy Metal") about the art of P. Craig Russell, including a photo showing one of Russell's friends modelling Elric of Melniboné's demented cousin Yyrkoon as he goes even more demented than usual.
I know I still have that issue of Epic, but can't find it - though doubtless will long after it no longer matters. However my visual memory suggests Yyrkoon's expression in the art matched that of the model so much that I bet he didn't often pull that face in public... :->
As a writer do you find your self making the facial expressions or gestures that your saying the characters are sometimes? Just to kind of test them out vaguely and see if they fit? It's something I find myself doing a lot and am wondering if real legit writers do this to, which is kinda awkward right now bc I'm sitting on a greyhound well writing lmao
Yes. Always. It's sort of embarrassing if people notice you doing it when you are writing in coffee shops.

Finally finishing the first Elric of Melniboné book, and I have made some notes on how disability is treated in it. Surprisingly, not as bad as I would have expected, which is cool.

And then Elric comes back to the island, sits his pale, scrawny, overdramatic ass on the ruby throne 🤣
Yyrkoon: What??? How are you even alive???
Elric: Skill Issue
So. I’m reading the Elric of Melnibone books because of your posting and I’m actually enjoying them! I’m halfway through the first one and this is my main take away so far:
Everyone with two braincells: You know your cousin wants to usurp your throne right?
Elric: Yeah, probably
Yyrkoon: *tries to murder Elric to usurp the throne*
Elric: *surprised Pikachu face*
It's also funny on a like, cultural level regarding Melniboné because literally everyone sees it coming, but they're also a culture that regularly does horrific eldritch shit recreationally so it's like, "I mean yeah we know he murdered his cousin for the throne, and he's creepy and incestuous towards his sister and is currently keeping her magically comatose, but do we actually have any reason to register that as bad?" And they... don't. They just kind of look at Elric going through this intense cultural disconnect because he's developing a sense of morality like "Skill issue."
