[2025.02.02] Sports Hochi - "2025 will be deeper and broader" - 5 days exclusive interview

2025.02.02 Yuzuru Hanyu: "2025 will be deeper and broader" - Exclusive interview published for five days from February 3rd
Professional figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu (30) gave an exclusive interview to Sports Hochi by February 1st, where he shared his aspirations for 2025, expressing the words "deeper and broader."
The third installment of his ice story series, Yuzuru Hanyu ICE STORY 3rd "Echoes of Life" TOUR, for which he serves as both performer and executive producer, will conclude with performances in Chiba (July 7 and 9 at Lala Arena Tokyo Bay).
The tour began with a performance in Saitama (Saitama Super Arena) in December last year, where he said, "It was a performance where I felt like I was able to show what I've worked hard for," and at the Hiroshima performance (Hiroshima Green Arena) in January this year, he said, "I felt like I wanted to put in a bit more effort."
Always striving for the best performance, he gives it his all in the two and a half hour one-man show. Even after turning professional, he continues to evolve as an athlete, seeking to deepen and broaden his journey. Starting from February 3rd, Sports Hochi will feature a series of exclusive photos and interviews with him over five consecutive days. (Takagi Megumi)
2025.02.03 Yuzuru Hanyu touched on philosophical books and Dazai Osamu, spun a story over three sleepless nights... Exclusive interview 1
First part of the exclusive interview with professional figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu (30). He is both a performer and executive producer of the "Yuzuru Hanyu ICE STORY 3rd "Echoes of Life" TOUR,", which will conclude its run in Chiba (on the 7th and 9th at Lalaport Tokyo Bay Arena). Like in his previous two ice story performances, he also wrote the script for this one. The work, which touches on the philosophy of life as its theme, was completed after three sleepless nights of writing. In the preparation phase, Hanyu engaged with philosophy books as well as novels, including works by Osamu Dazai.
Hanyu also wrote the script for the two-and-a-half-hour ice show, which he skates solo. This time, he completed it after three days of staying up all night.
"During that time, I was practicing for two days (laughs). On the first day, I practiced, then came back and stayed up all night. After another practice, I stayed awake and kept writing. 'Oh, it's morning already.' Then I thought, 'Ah, it's the third day, time to practice.'"
Showing his incredible concentration, which has often amazed audiences in the past, Hanyu produced a well-crafted script.
"I felt that I had to write when the thoughts came to me, and I was simply worried about the deadline (laughs). But nothing was coming to me. I had pretty much the outline in mind, but figuring out the setting was the hardest part."
He incorporated philosophical concepts like "What is life?" and "What is 'I'?" into this ice story.
"It took me nearly two months to decide what I wanted to convey and select the programs that would make up that story. From there, the setting was roughly decided, the outline was decided, and the type of story I wanted to write was decided...'I have to write it,' I thought, and while I wrote bits and pieces, I wasn't satisfied with what I had done. So, I ended up discarding everything and started over from scratch."
Hanyu always writes by hand. He scribbles on paper. In the preparation stage, he read not only philosophy books like The Disaster of Birth but also novels. One of these novels was Osamu Dazai’s No Longer Human.
"I thought I should read Dazai. I hadn't really been exposed to novels like that up until now. The only book I had read properly was The Kojiki (The Record of Ancient Matters)."
The mention of The Kojiki is intriguing. He read it back in junior high school.
"There was a time for reading, and during that period, my mother handed me The Kojiki to read (laughs). I didn’t really have many opportunities to engage with novels or written text, and I wasn’t particularly good at it. So this time, I listened to the audio on Audible and read No Longer Human."
He followed the narration with his eyes, while also absorbing the text. He also spun stories in his past shows GIFT and RE_PRAY. During that process, he was told that his story was "like that of Osamu Dazai".
"This time, I really wanted to write it like a novel, I wanted to write a proper story. There were people who said that my writing style was somewhat similar, so I thought I had to study properly."
Once he made that decision, Hanyu was determined to learn everything he can.
"The way the words are used, and the story itself. I don't think there are many people who read 'No Longer Human' and go, 'I get it!' But it’s certainly valuable as an educational work of culture—to peer into human darkness and desires, to understand the very roots of them. I think it's worth having that kind of knowledge and worldview in your head."
2025.02.04 Yuzuru Hanyu: 'What to do about the 6-minute practice' and the Piano Collection... Exclusive Interview 2
This is the second exclusive interview with professional figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu (30). One of the highlights of the "Yuzuru Hanyu ICE STORY 3rd "Echoes of Life" TOUR," which will conclude with a performance in Chiba (7th and 9th, Lala Arena Tokyo Bay), is the "Piano Collection." We asked him about the background to the creation of this nearly 10-minute feature-length work of five piano pieces, and his particular attention to detail.
In the first half of the ice story, "Piano Collection" has become one of the highlights. After performing a nearly 10-minute long medley of five piano pieces, he transitions directly into his short program from the Pyeongchang Olympics, Chopin's "Ballade No. 1." How did the idea for "Piano Collection" come about?
"First of all, there was the issue of what to do about the six-minute practice."
After turning professional, Hanyu has been incorporating the 6-minute practice into his solo shows. This innovative approach is based on his desire to "create a competitive atmosphere."
"This time, the premise was that I wanted to write it as a story, so I had the idea of scraping the 6-minute practice part. However, when I thought about the performance content up to that point, I realized that I needed to create something that could properly build up to it (Ballade), and if I could create something that could be properly organized as a program, I thought that would kill two birds with one stone."
The structure moves from the piano medley to the gold medal-winning performance. A breathtaking sense of tension enveloped the venue.
"Some people have said they liked seeing the official practice sessions, and I think the serious, stoic attitude of working towards a single goal is a form of expression in itself. When I thought about embodying that in the character Nova, I initially wanted to make the piano pieces incredibly stoic, turning them all into etudes (practice pieces). I had a strong image of ending with 'Ballade No. 1' after a series of etudes. That's the idea that started it all."
The five pieces that follow — Brahms, Bach, Scarlatti, Chopin, and Chopin again — were carefully selected.
"It was very difficult. I thought about arranging the pieces chronologically. For instance, showing the evolution from Bach to Chopin, and how they would eventually lead to Chopin, or conversely, I could start with Chopin, go back to the past, and then come back to Chopin again. I also considered making all the chords the same. I thought about many possibilities, but I realized that I wouldn't get anywhere by thinking on my own, so I consulted with (pianist) Kiyozuka (Shinya)."
The selection was then finalized with the help of Kiyozuka, a man he trusts, who suggested potential pieces.
"I said, 'I have this image, but what should I do?' From the start, I told him that I wanted to line up several pieces that were each just under a minute long. We discussed, 'If we line them up this way, it would form this kind of collection. What do you think?' But I also didn’t want to do too much editing. However, there were parts where I felt editing was necessary. It was really a trial-and-error process, and I was determined to include Baroque music. That's how it turned out."
Jeffrey Battle choreographed the five fascinating pieces. Which of the pieces is the toughest to skate to?
"They’re all tough!"
2025.02.05 Yuzuru Hanyu: "Ballade No. 1" is the "sound of destiny" - the second half of the performance is a determined effort... Exclusive interview 3
This is the third exclusive interview with professional figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu (30). The final performance of the "Yuzuru Hanyu ICE STORY 3rd "Echoes of Life" TOUR" will be in Chiba (7th and 9th, Lala Arena Tokyo Bay), where he will perform "Ballade No. 1," his short program from the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics. He is executing the same high-difficulty routine as back then, layering it with the 'Sound of Destiny.'
After performing a 10-minute "Piano Collection," composed of five pieces of music, Yuzuru Hanyu skates his short program (SP) "Ballade No. 1" from the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics. As he had said, "It's all tough!" the routine includes not only jumps like the quadruples and triple axels, but also parts expressed with spins and steps, making the physical demand extraordinarily high.
"My feet were strained in the previous piece, 'Mass Dis'[Note 1]. Also, the costume change from 'Mass Dis' is quite difficult. While frantically changing into the 'Ballade 1' costume, I quickly put on my shoes and head out to the ice. I was panting and thinking, "I need to concentrate," when Brahms started. I recently made a mistake on the triple loop (the first jump)...I think I made a mistake once and it became a trauma. I couldn't get the loop right, so I was feeling anxious about the loop in the (next) Bach part. And after that comes the toe loop."
Scarlatti plays as soon as Hanyu landed the quadruple toe loop.
"That toe loop is extremely nerve-wracking. The following (triple) axel is also nerve-wracking, and it's tiring. It's like doing anaerobic exercise the whole time. It felt like I was getting ready, then doing anaerobic exercise again, then catching my breath and doing anaerobic exercise again, and so on and so forth."
Then comes "Ballade No. 1," a high-difficulty routine starting with a quadruple Salchow and featuring two jumps in the second half: a triple axel and a quadruple-triple toe loop combination.
"Well, it’s tough. At first, I thought I could do it just fine. I thought it would work (laughs). But it turned out to be more difficult than I thought. Initially, I thought maybe I could just use the structure from the 2020 Four Continents Championship [Note 2], not the one from PyeongChang. I thought that was the final form, so I figured that would be fine. But when it came to 'the Sound of Destiny,' if I was told to 'play the sound of your own destiny,' I realized that it had to be the PyeongChang version."
This Ice Story has "sound" as one of its key themes. Right before taking his starting position for "Ballade No. 1," a narration is played: "Now, please play the 'sound' of your word 'destiny'."
"The destiny I have reached is of course "SEIMEI" (from my free program at the PyeongChang Olympics), but I think I was able to win because I was able to perform "Bara 1" without any mistakes there. There was a ritual (the piano collection) to get to that point, and I wanted to show that I had followed the path of destiny to reach it. It’s difficult, but I’m determined to stick with the two jumps in the second half."
He performs this after skating for over 30 minutes since the start of the show, on a smaller rink compared to a competition, in a dimly lit show venue.
"The trajectory has changed quite a bit, and I’ve had to change the choreography. The sharper the curve, the harder it was on my legs. I was experimenting with different things, and I did feel it was tough. But, I managed to do it once without any mistakes (at the Saitama performance), so I’m going to do my best."
Notes:
'Mass Destruction' - A track from the role-playing game Persona 3.
After the Pyeongchang Olympics, the rule that multiplied the base points of all jumps in the second half of a performance by 1.1 was revised, limiting it to the last one in the short program and the last three in the free program. After the revision, the composition of the Four Continents Championships was a quadruple salchow, a quadruple-triple toe loop combo, and a triple axel in the second half. Hanyu achieved a world-record score of 111.82 points in that competition.
2025.02.06 Yuzuru Hanyu: "Because I want to get better" Training research and dance basics... Exclusive interview 4
This is the fourth exclusive interview with professional figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu (30). Since turning professional in July 2022, he has been taking on the unprecedented challenge of performing a two-and-a-half-hour ice show all by himself. The final performance of the "Yuzuru Hanyu ICE STORY 3rd "Echoes of Life" TOUR" will be in Chiba (7th and 9th, Lala Arena Tokyo Bay). While interacting with his body and researching training methods, he is focusing on building a body that balances endurance and explosive power. He has started gym training and also taking dance lessons. With an endless desire to improve, he is on the path to evolution.
Training to build up the stamina needed to skate for two and a half hours while also mastering the explosive movements unique to figure skating is hard work.
"Explosive movements need to be practiced specifically for explosiveness, and for slow-twitch muscles [Note 1], it depends on how much practice I can do in full runs. I always feel like I have to think of them separately and train for them individually. For high-difficulty jumps, I approach them with techniques suited to their difficulty. Then, there's the stamina needed to skate for over two hours, as well as the grip strength required to tie my skate laces."
He changes costumes for each program and takes off his shoes each time. The laces of his skates need to be tied very tightly. Including encores, there are 15 songs in total. There are many moments, other than skating, that drain his physical energy.
"I’ve been pulling continuously for so long. Like in “Utai” (the third performance), if I keep stretching my hands all the time (in choreography), I lose arm muscles. Of course, jumping also requires grip strength. So, I guess my grip strength is getting stronger as I go along. I have been lifting barbells recently. I do deadlifts and high cleans."
While interacting with his body and conducting further research, he has also started new machine-based training.
"That’s really to make sure I can maintain high output no matter how tired I am and also to make sure I can use my body effectively."
His physical condition is better than during his competitive days. He says he is currently at his leanest, and this is intentional. "For what purpose?" He immediately answered.
"I just want to get better. As I continue training to improve, I naturally get leaner. I feel like any excess has been eliminated. It’s close to the balance I had during the Helsinki World Championships in 2017. I’ve gained muscle mass since then, so I’m about 1.5 kg heavier, but I think the fat balance is the same as it was back then. I think it's ideal for myself."
He turned 30 in December last year. His physical strength and technique are evolving. "I’m amazed at how much more I can still do." He feels the possibilities for his future. His desire to improve knows no bounds. After completing "RE_PRAY" last April, he started taking dance lessons, which he had taught himself until then.
"I took a little lesson with MIKIKO (the choreographer). MIKIKO originally works in hip hop, and also jazz, or rather contemporary, so it's a variety of genres. When it comes to hip hop in particular, I've always said that I really don't have a solid foundation. I told her, 'I want to work on the basics.' She sent me a lot of videos and I worked on it."
Hanyu, who has the ability to effortlessly control his body in everything from classical music to intense pop tunes, gives himself a harsh self-evaluation which also reflects the potential for his growth.
"No, I realized I can’t do this much. There were really simple things that I couldn’t do at all. I practiced those simple things for about three months, and I wonder if I’ve gotten a little better, but I still feel like I have a long way to go."
[Note 1] Slow-twitch muscles are related to endurance, and fast-twitch muscles are related to explosiveness.
2025.02.07 Yuzuru Hanyu: From "full marathon" to "ekiden", increasing output to 2.5 hours... Final part of exclusive interview
This is the final installment of an exclusive interview with professional figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu (30). He is both a performer and executive producer of "Yuzuru Hanyu ICE STORY 3rd "Echoes of Life" TOUR," which will kick off its Chiba performance at Lala Arena Tokyo Bay on the 7th. The two-and-a-half-hour solo show will reach its final series with some changes only possible with a tour. The pace distribution will change from a "marathon" to an "ekiden". He will pour his soul into every performance, keep his output high from the start, and fulfill his "expression" beyond his limits.
In the January performance in Hiroshima, he left an impression by using his body more expansively. What happened after the Saitama performance in December?
"After Saitama, I received criticism from (director) MIKIKO-sensei."
He shared this with a laugh.
"She told me, 'You had more power in "First Pulse" (the first piece), didn't you?' and I said, 'Ah, yes, that's right.' There were also some things like, 'Let's fix this here, let's fix that there.' I just said 'yes.' When I watched the video, I definitely agreed with her. The hardest part for me was recovering from the fatigue of the Saitama performance. After that, focusing and practicing the full run-through was also difficult because of time constraints. But I’ve been doing training to expand my own physical range of motion and mobility."
A two-and-a-half-hour solo performance, connecting each piece with full energy.
"I’m doing it with the momentum of an 800-meter sprint or a full marathon (laughs). In "RE_PRAY" (from the previous Ice Story), I felt like I was doing it with the breathing and exhaustion of a full marathon, but this time it's probably closer to a relay race (ekiden). Fans have said, 'It's like an ekiden,' which left an impression on me. For example, they said, 'The section of Ballade No. 1 is like a hill, right?' Each program can cover for each other even if one of them falters, so it's like a relay race. That made sense to me."
While the Saitama performance was more of a full marathon type, the pacing was changed for the Hiroshima performance.
"In Saitama, I kept a steady pace throughout, not varying much, but still consciously putting in effort where necessary. That was something I learned from RE_PRAY, and it was a success because of the practice I had done. In Hiroshima, I increased my output significantly, including for the new program. As a result, there were parts that didn’t go well, but I believe the expressive quality improved tremendously."
There was something to be gained from the two shows in Hiroshima, where the performances were performed with full power from the very start.
"I had never used my body in such a full range of motion before, like in “Poem” (“Eclipse/blue”) and "GATE OF STEINER. From start to finish, I was able to skate while immersing myself emotionally, which was a successful experience for me."
Through the cycle of questioning and reproduction, the tour will reach its final performance in Chiba.
"Right now, I’m trying out new knowledge and training methods. I've made some big updates between Saitama and Hiroshima. I’m still in the process, and my body is changing as I go. Like with RE_PRAY and GIFT, there were times when I sacrificed expression for the more intense parts, like Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso or Dark Messenger or Ballade No. 1. I want to continue training my body so that I can give my all without sacrificing expression."

"They had planned for 1min for photo taking but there was only 30s left (Y: Yaguchi, sorry!). [The shoot set up was next to the chair (where he was doing his interview)] and Yuzu pretty much teleported to the seat and struck the pose and Yaguchi-san took the photo, all in 30s"
Yuzuru Hanyu ``Transcendence.
Figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu (27), who won back-to-back gold medals at the 2014 Sochi and 2018 PyeongChang Olympics, held a public practice "SharePractice" at his hometown ice rink Sendai on the 10th and showed off his skating skills for the first time as a professional skater. The start of the new chapter was also broadcast live on his official YouTube channel "HANYU YUZURU", and was viewed by more than 100,000 people. After the joint interview, he spoke about the past, present, and future in an exclusive interview with Sports Hochi. (Megumi Takagi)
Q: You appeared in the ice show “Fantasy on Ice” from May to June. Did you decide to turn pro when you started?
"Ah... Well, I can say that, but I can't say that for sure. In fact, I feel that my determination has solidified while experiencing the stage of the ice show. Somehow, While feeling that I want to continue working here, or rather, how I can move forward from here, I also felt a little bit of room for growth, so in that sense as well. , I thought a little that I want to get better.”
―In the joint boxed interview, you said that the prospects for “activities within the year” have been set. I'm also practicing for it. You said "it's still a secret", but could you give me a hint?
"Hahahaha (laughs)"
-Please, just a little bit...
“A little bit? However, from now on, including the 4A, I would like to try to achieve both extremely difficult things and things that I want to express at the same time.”
-Can we have an ice show?
"I think it's fine for a show. However, I'm currently thinking a lot about how it's going to look like, so I can't say for certain. (laughs) Yes.”
―At the press conference on July 19th, you said, “I want to cherish my heart.” Is that related to the fact that the number of smiles in Kiss and Cry has decreased?
"Ahahaha. That's true. Of course, it's the same, and it's the same when I'm doing an ice show, but it's because I'm so amazing that I'm completely absorbed in the performance, so sometimes I don't know what... I'm in the media. I tend to neglect things that aren't Yuzuru Hanyu. The choice may be disappointing, or they may say they won't watch it anymore, but I want to make sure that my value is in skating. It's too late after my heart is empty, and perhaps only I can understand it, and I can't take care of it unless I realize it. I felt like I wanted to properly acknowledge my heart because even the things that I didn't want to do became important."
―What about Yuzuru Hanyu, who doesn't appear in the media, in his private life?
“Yes (laughs). Yes.
- Your real self?
"is that so"
―For Yuzuru Hanyu, what kind of person is Yuzuru Hanyu?
"Well, I said it at the press conference, but it's heavy, isn't it? After all, there is definitely an ideal version of yourself, but when you go out into society normally, everyone wears it. But I think I've become too strong to say that I have to do this more because it attracts everyone's attention. In my case, I believe that it is precisely because of this that I am able to do well. Now that I'm a professional, I feel it again."
―Please tell us your favorite program and costume?
"Hahahahahaha! My favorite program! Hmm...it doesn't come out right away. But now I really like 'Heaven and Earth' (Note 1). I think I can be myself."
- What about your clothes?
"The costume is, well... 'White Legend' (Note 2)"
―You have entered a new stage as a professional. What program would you like to do next?
“The program I want to do in the future is…well, I want to create a program that goes above and beyond what you can imagine.”
―What are your future aspirations?
"Future aspirations. That's right. Hmm. 'Transcendence'. Fufufu. I want to surpass myself."

Character Profiles
Boys:
Aito Yukimura
Ultimate Puppeteer
Height: 154 cm / 5 ft 1 in
Chest Size: 74 cm / 29 in
Weight: 46 kg / 101 lbs
Blood Type: 0
Likes: Tea
Dislikes: Darkness
Date of Birth: September 20th
Aito acts excessively childish, like reeeaaally childish. He might not take a serious situation... seriously. If he feel like he wants to become closer to someone, he’ll be kinder and stick around them until they brush him off, kind of like a kid. He also gets easily surprised and amazed.
Because of his child-like behaviour, a lot of kids enjoy his puppet shows because it feels like it was practically made “for them, by them”. In the end, he enjoys being around kids and make them smile!
Asuka Takagi
Ultimate Police Detective
Height: 171 cm / 5 ft 6 in
Chest Size: 78 cm / 31 in
Weight: 64 kg / 141 lbs
Blood Type: 0
Likes: Waterfalls
Dislikes: Robberies
Date of Birth: July 27th
Asuka is a slightly egoistic boy who’s pretty much a lone wolf. He feels like the others might slow him down, so he almost never accepts help for anything. He even goes all the way out to try and take the leadership of any situation so he can keep it under control.
He’s got a lot of pride in his talent; as a police detective, he takes his duty very seriously. Asuka has proven multiple times that he’s very capable of handling his job all by himself and never resorting to teamwork.
Ikuto Tsukino
Ultimate Astrobiologist
Height: 182 cm / 6 ft 0 in
Chest Size: 82 cm / 32 in
Weight: 70 kg / 154 lbs
Blood Type: AB
Likes: Fallen Leaves
Dislikes: Newbies
Date of Birth: January 9th
Ikuto has a really strong attitude. Usually, his aggressive and angry personality get the best of him, so he can come off as rude very often (and he is). He can't stand sugarcoated or roundabout conversations cuz they’re a waste of time, so you better be direct with Ikuto unless you want him to run out of patience.
He’s got great interest and a wide knowledge in his area of expertise... but not for the reasons that one would think. He even conducted plenty of research and contributed to the astrobiology field on numerous occasions.
Ren Aihara
Ultimate Fashion Designer
Height: 187 cm / 6 ft 1 in
Chest Size: 87 cm / 34 in
Weight: 77 kg / 169 lbs
Blood Type: A
Likes: Rain
Dislikes: Fame
Date of Birth: January 5th
Ren is the calm and quiet type who’s a genuinely kind person. He’s highly humble and somewhat reserved about himself. He needs everything to be in peace so that tranquility fills the air; if things are getting a little too heavy, he’ll back off a bit from the conversation.
As expected from a fashion designer, he’s made lots of gorgeous and stylish designs, but while he enjoys it, Ren’s a bit of a perfectionist when there are tiny mistakes that throw him off, and might pull an all-nighter fixing them.
Seiji Oozora
Ultimate Boy Scout
Height: 167 cm / 5 ft 5 in
Chest Size: 79 cm / 31 in
Weight: 62 kg / 136 lbs
Blood Type: A
Likes: Fluffy Animals
Dislikes: Clouds
Date of Birth: February 8th
Seiji is a guy who truly enjoys helping others and being overall nice to everyone; he always insists on helping and making sure everything and everyone’s okay. He's also very respectful, cares a lot for his friends and tries his best to lead everyone to the right path.
By being a boy scout, he knows a lot of handy things that might seem small, but you’ll probably need his help for more than one thing. Out of all the activities, Seiji enjoys camping and exploring the most.
Tatsuo Shimizu
Ultimate Mathematician
Height: 176 cm / 5 ft 7 in
Chest Size: 81 cm / 32 in
Weight: 67 kg / 147 lbs
Blood Type: A
Likes: Baking Chocolate
Dislikes: Beaches
Date of Birth: May 12th
Tatsuo is a gentleman that prioritizes “the right path” above everything else. He might act a bit strict here and there, but despite that, he’s always meaning the best for everyone’s sake. He also tries to motivate and encourage people so that they can keep moving forward.
Incredibly smart mathwise, he can solve huge equations with his mind within seconds. Since these things are so simple for him though, when he tries to explain them to someone, he has a hard time detailing every “simple” process.
Yoshimi Komuro
Ultimate Set Designer
Height: 180 cm / 5 ft 9 in
Chest Size: 84 cm / 33 in
Weight: 72 kg / 158 lbs
Blood Type: B
Likes: Gossip
Dislikes: Cheap Paint
Date of Birth: October 6th
Yoshimi is a quite charming and charismatic individual who appears to be relaxingly carefree. He isn't afraid of speaking his mind, nor does he seem to be particularly bothered by anyone’s comments or opinions. He’ll most likely do as he pleases instead of getting bossed around.
He's very passionate about his art and work in general. Although he enjoys the theater, acting isn't something that he's interested in taking part in; he prefers to contribute in artistic ways like with backgrounds and props.
Yuzuru Nomura
Ultimate Recycler
Height: 160 cm / 5 ft 2 in
Chest Size: 75 cm / 29 in
Weight: 56 kg / 123 lbs
Blood Type: B
Likes: Cybergoth
Dislikes: Rich People
Date of Birth: March 23rd
Yuzuru is a good and creative boy that seems pretty naive, but he's not actually that innocent. He's really generous and helpful; always offering his help whenever he can, and not taking a no for an answer. He tries his best to get along with everyone in his surroundings.
He keeps things that can be recycled in case that he might need them in the future to make something. Yuzuru also likes to make tiny yet useful gifts from time to time with his abilities.
Girls:
Himawari Oshiro
Ultimate Violinist
Height: 169 cm / 5 ft 6 in
Chest Size: 90 cm / 35 in
Weight: 52 kg / 115 lbs
Blood Type: B
Likes: Loud Noises
Dislikes: Girly Clothes
Date of Birth: December 13rd
Himawari is a highly-energetic girl, and kind of tough too. But don’t worry, if you’re nice with her, she’ll totally stand by your side like the good friend she is; an eye for an eye as they say! And of course, once Himawari is decided on something, it’s very difficult to change her mind.
All her energy needs to get out somehow, so most of the times she plays the violin while dancing intensely at the rhytmn of the music in order to do so. This activity is filled with so much passion, you can hear it in her compositions.
Irasema Crisanto
Ultimate Lepidopterist
Height: 162 cm / 5 ft 3 in
Chest Size: 74 cm / 29 in
Weight: 50 kg / 110 lbs
Blood Type: B
Likes: Butterflies and Moths
Dislikes: Dark Colors
Date of Birth: June 3rd
Irasema is a very distant person when it comes to socializing, and sort of mean or grumpy too. By acting like this, she tries to be alone since she seems to prefer having her own space. She involves a lot of sarcasm in her conversations for her own amusement.
Butterflies and moths are sort of hypnotizing for her; she could watch them for days and still not get tired. The flower crown she handcrafted by herself attracts many of these bugs when she’s near their area.
Kaiyo Fukumori
Ultimate Theorist
Height: 154 cm / 5 ft 1 in
Chest Size: 77 cm / 30 in
Weight: 43 kg / 95 lbs
Blood Type: AB
Likes: Kiwifruit
Dislikes: Scorpions
Date of Birth: April 30th
Kaiyo is a very nervous individual who seems doubtful and insecure most of the time, but tries to pull through it so that she can show how capable she is despite leaving said impressions. She’s caring and also very mature; she takes every situation seriously, even the ones that don’t require it.
Being very knowledgable in almost every field, Kaiyo can (along with other abilities) theorize possible outcomes to most situations, and because of these many routes, she constantly worries about what could happen next.
Kiiro Sasakawa
Ultimate Underwater Performer
Height: 137 cm / 4 ft 5 in
Chest Size: 67 cm / 26 in
Weight: 35 kg / 77 lbs
Blood Type: A
Likes: The Moon
Dislikes: Sweet Food
Date of Birth: January 28th
Kiiro might look like a very sweet person, but she isn't all that friendly actually. She's very hard to approach, and tends to throw a tantrum when people don't agree with her until they give in. She appears to feel like she’s above everything else, and acts like nothing could ever bring her down.
This girl is almost like a mermaid; she can swim underwater with great control, like she has lived there her whole life and knows what she’s doing. Kiiro can also hold her breath for a long period of time.
Machi Miwa
Ultimate Matchmaker
Height: 165 cm / 5 ft 4 in
Chest Size: 87 cm / 34 in
Weight: 53 kg / 117 lbs
Blood Type: 0
Likes: Strawberry Drinks
Dislikes: Infidelity
Date of Birth: November 18th
Machi is a very enthusiastic and caring girl who’s highly extroverted (maybe a bit too much). She tends to cheer up anyone who might seem down, and compliments people out of the kindness of her heart. She’s also extremely good at reading people in terms of likes, dislikes and basic personality.
Because she’s a matchmaker, couples are like oxygen for her; nothing will make her day like a pair of lovebirds being happy with each other. Be careful of treating others too nicely around her!
Matsuko Hanabashi
Ultimate Pattissier
Height: 158 cm / 5 ft 1 in
Chest Size: 81 cm / 32 in
Weight: 55 kg / 121 lbs
Blood Type: B
Likes: High Heel Boots
Dislikes: Glasses
Date of Birth: July 16th
Matsuko can come across as an average person at first sight, but that might change after a few interactions with her. She has a tendency to ramble when she states her thoughts or opinions, and can easily get upset when you question her decisions and ideas while getting defensive about them.
Unlike most talented people, Matsuko doesn't enjoy her talent and the routine that comes with it(though she doesn't despise it); she prefers to write stories and talk about them rather than baking.
Ragni Vinter
Ultimate Ice Skater
Height: 174 cm / 5 ft 7 in
Chest Size: 83 cm / 33 in
Weight: 49 kg / 108 lbs
Blood Type: B
Likes: Cats
Dislikes: Family Gatherings
Date of Birth: July 22nd
Ragni is sort of a temperamental girl. She often treats others coldly, and tends to avoid conversations by cutting it short; not very open, and certainly not all that cooperative either. Depending on how tense things are, she might act normally and mature, or just be insufferable for the rest of the day.
If there's a place where you can see her being genuinely happy, that's the ice rink. Ragni’s ice skating skills are flawless when it comes to balance and elegance, although that’s mostly when she has to get serious.
Yuuka Akahana
Ultimate Silk Curtain Dancer
Height: 147 cm / 4 ft 8 in
Chest Size: 97 cm / 38 in
Weight: 71 kg / 156 lbs
Blood Type: A
Likes: Ribbons
Dislikes: Social Networks
Date of Birth: March 4th
Yuuka is an extremely shy but totally sweet girl; she can get nervous most of the times, and doesn't tend to share her opinions ‘cuz she mostly goes with the flow/what others say. While she’s got a bit of self-doubt, whenever someone compliments her, she gets flustered and feels reassured.
Her performances are quite stunning! With a big combination of flexibility, strength and grace, her stunts in the air are a complete success. Yuuka’s abilities are sky-high!

[2024.07.19-2024.07.21] Yuzuru Hanyu: Interview two years after turning professional (Hochi)

Figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu (29), who marked two years since announcing his decision to turn pro on the 19th, agreed to an interview. He spoke at length about his two years as a professional, his present and the future, his fateful encounter with a program, and the "ideal" he is pursuing. We will be publishing Hanyu's words, who continues to evolve as an athlete and artist, for three consecutive days. The second and final instalment are a stand-alone interview. (Interviewer: Takagi Megumi)
Part 1:
Hanyu-san appeared dashingly at the studio in Sendai. As soon as he arrived, he started the interview by saying "Thank you." His quick thinking and agility were as good as ever. His black jersey looked good on him as always.
"Honestly, my first year as a professional was a bit of a trial-and-error state; I was constantly thinking about whether I should do this, whether I should do that, what I should do. But this (second year) has been a year in which I have clearly understood what I want to express, and what I want to do as a professional."
Though he was thoughtful at times and carefully choosing his words, he was smiling throughout the interview. Looking back on the past two years, his expression showed how contented he has become as a professional.
It all started with a one-man show “Prologue”. “GIFT,” the first solo Tokyo Dome performance by a skater in history, lasted two and a half hours in which he skated alone. In "RE_PRAY", the second instalment of the ice story following "GIFT", he took on his first national tour.
"In the second year, with 'RE_PRAY', the ice story was completely formed. I think the big thing about the second year was that I was able to properly establish what pieces existed in the story and what kind of story I wanted to tell."
He wrote the story himself, served as executive producer, and performed "Ice Story" by himself. With "RE_PRAY," he created a new form of entertainment that combines gaming and skating.
"It's the same when I choreograph various programs, but I think that the essence of what I want to express is always the idea of 'living' and the constant presence of something like a 'prayer' towards 'living'."
He has changed the concept of a professional skater. He can perform quadruple jumps and perform programs in a variety of genres. His evolution as an athlete and an artist continues in his third season.
"I have finally established the foundation for what I want to do, so as an extension of that, I am wondering how I can improve my skills in terms of expression. In order to convey myself, I believe that I cannot improve my level unless I have a strong technical foundation, as I have always said since my competitive days. I feel that my third year will be a time when I will be working on improving both my technique and my physical strength."
He will be turning 30 in December. He says that his present life is different from the future he envisioned as a teenager. He was supposed to have turned professional after the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics and retire from skating in his 20s.
"The way my stamina and technique have developed is completely different from what I had imagined, but it gives me a real sense of how much more I can achieve, and a sense of great potential for the future. I now feel that humans can achieve much more than I had thought."
He won consecutive Olympic gold medals in Pyeongchang and after his third Olympic Games in Beijing, he turned professional. He had an incredibly intense 20s. What will his 30s be like? "Nothing in particular has changed," he continued, tilting his head.
"While still cherishing who I am, I think that showing my skills and facing skating are a big part of what makes me happy. I want to always have within myself a reason for my existence, a meaning to the past 30 years for everyone. It's not just because my fans watch me, or because skating is all I have, but I want to create more clearly within myself the core of my life in my 30s."
Skating with soul. "Pursuing the ideal," he wrote on his coloured paper. The story of professional skater Yuzuru Hanyu has just begun.
-What have the past two years been like since you turned professional?
"As an athlete, I have really thought about many things in a stoic way up until now. Of course, this is true in terms of technique, but I think I have always been thinking about victory in particular. To be honest, in my first year as a professional, I was feeling my way around; I spent the whole year constantly thinking about whether I should do this, whether I should do that, what I should do. I think this (second year) has been the year in which I have clearly understood what I want to express, and what I want to do as a professional."
-What have you come to understand clearly?
"In the first year, I had 'Prologue,' and I was feeling my way around whether I could skate solo. I was also working on 'GIFT' at the same time. At the time, I wanted to write my own story, and I wanted the audience to experience how the programs they had seen up until then would change as they watched them. This was something I had vaguely thought about since my competitive days. I was able to make this a reality in my first year. In my second year, I had 'RE_PRAY,' and I felt like I had completely formed the ice story. It wasn't just about trying to figure out how to skate by myself or changing perspectives by putting what I wanted to express into a story. I think the big thing about my second year was that I was able to properly establish that this story has these pieces, and that this is the story I would like to convey."
-What kind of year will your third year be?
"I have finally established a foundation for what I want to do, so as an extension of that, I am wondering how I can improve my skills in terms of expression. As for conveying myself, I have always said since my competitive days that I can't improve my level without having strong technique as a foundation. I feel that my third year will be a time when I will be working on improving both my technique and my physical strength."
-Memories from the past two years?
"There are a lot, of course. I can't really say just one, but I've had so many different, precious experiences. Most recently, the completion of "RE_PRAY". I had that feeling that it was received well. I'm currently in the middle of the production process (laughs). It's my motivation to keep working hard, it's my driving force."
-Are you currently working on any new projects?
"I've been creating new programs and other things. I've started digging deeper into what I want to express. Because I've been working alone for so long, the emotions that come out of me tend to be biased. My ideas haven't fundamentally changed that much, so my repertoire hasn't expanded that much. But I do feel that my experiences with 'RE_PRAY' and other such things are the driving force behind the birth of new emotions and new expressions."
-Will Ice Story continue to create themes by asking itself these questions?
"Whether it was when I was creating 'RE_PRAY,' or when I was choreographing programs like 'Goliath,' 'Aqua,' and others, I think that at the core of what I want to express is the idea of 'living,' and the constant presence of something like a 'prayer' towards 'living.' So, what I want to convey on top of that and what I want to dig deeper into may affect the way I present myself depending on the program at hand."
-You'll be turning 30 in December. How does it compare to how you imagined your 30 would be?
"When I was 18 or 16, to be honest, I imagined I probably wouldn't be skating anymore by 30 (laughs). I would turn professional at 24 immediately after the Pyeongchang Olympics, and I thought I'd be active for about five years and then be done with skating. But the way I've developed my stamina and technique is completely different from what I imagined, and I feel a real sense of realization that I can still do so much, and a great sense of possibility for the future. Right now, I feel that humans can still do much more than I thought."
-What kind of person do you want to be in your 30s?
"Nothing has changed in particular. However, the more I polish my way of expression and the more time I spend constantly practicing and facing myself, the stronger my sense of self is becoming, and I feel like my foundation is becoming more and more established. In this way, I will continue to cherish myself in my 30s. But I think that showing my skills and facing skating is a big part of what makes me happy. I want to always have a reason for my existence, a reason for living for the past 30 years. Not just because my fans watch me, or because skating is all I have, but I want to create a clearer core for myself in my 30s."

Part 2:
It has been two years since figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu (29) announced his professional debut on the 19th. In the second part, he spoke to Sports Hochi in an exclusive interview about his "fateful encounter" with a certain program. (Interviewer: Megumi Takagi)
-Does time pass differently now compared to when you were an athlete?
"When I was a competing athlete, I could just keep thinking about things like building my physique or practicing skating. But when I'm creating something or choreographing a program or doing things like that, I don't have time to just practice. So, I thought, 'I won’t be able to practice during this period, so I'll just try to maintain it’, or ‘I'll try to keep it to a certain level, and since I'm currently in the production period, it can't be helped if I cut down on sleep.' I want to provide something good, and when I think about all sorts of things, I can't sleep. To begin with, I'm the kind of person who tends to live an unhealthy lifestyle (laughs). I know I should sleep more for my skating, or eat more of this or that, but it just keeps falling apart."
-How much sleep do you get?
"It depends on the day. If I feel like I can't take it anymore, sometimes I'll sleep for eight or nine hours straight, and sometimes I fall asleep without realising it. On the other hand, there are also days when I'm awake all day. It's normal to stay up all night even though there's no need to. But it's at times like those that stories are born. It's hard to put into words. It's not that different from writing lyrics or composing music. I guess that's just how it is. I've accepted it and thought that this is just my style."
-During the rehearsals for "Notte Stellata" in March, you said you were "nervous about the new program."
"Of course, I felt nervous about performing it in front of everyone for the first time, wondering if I’ll make a mistake or if everything will be okay, but if anything, I thought it's great, and the people around also thought it's great. But when that circle expands from me to people who are close to me, and then to my fans and to the general public, honestly I'm really scared about what people will think. People have completely different values, and there's no doubt that the impression people get when they hear a program or a song is different for each person. So I do feel a bit scared that it may go in the wrong direction."
-How have you felt about that over the past two years?
"I've created a lot of programs, including 'RE_PRAY', and it makes me happy to see that people have different preferences for the programs they like. Some people say they like my self-choreographed programs, and others say they prefer programs that are properly choreographed by a choreographer. Some people say they prefer programs that are more like traditional figure skating, and conversely, some people prefer programs that are more over-the-top, like 'MEGALOVANIA', so it really varies. That's also one of my strengths. I'm really happy that everyone has different interpretations of the programs and likes them."
-What programs would you like to try in the future?
"I actually want to make a 15-minute program, but I'm worried it might be difficult."
-Is that a physical thing?
"Of course, it's physically demanding. For example, even if I don't jump that much, I don't want it to become boring. I want to create something with so-called contemporary movements, but I don't think I can keep up."
-There’s a concept.
"I have a vague idea, but I'm not sure if I can go that far yet. I don’t know. I haven't found a song that I want to skate to yet. I just don’t think I’ve found a song that I want to skate to for 15 or 20 minutes."
-"Danny Boy" (※1) has a more empathetic and gentler feel than ever before. Is this due to the fact that your range of expression has expanded over the past two years, or is it a change from within?
"I do feel like I've become able to express emotions that were already there in new ways. That's true when I skate to 'Notte' (Notte stellata) or 'Spring' (Come, Spring). I've been able to express things like compassion or prayer through the melody, the way I use my hands, the way I use my upper body, and so on. Up until now, I've been doing classical, pop, and instrumental pieces, and 'Come, Spring' was originally a pop song. This time, I used a jazz melody, which was something I hadn't done before, and I think the biggest difference is that I feel like I've finally become able to do it. Of course, I think part of it is that I'm getting older and becoming more mature, but I feel like I’m catching up a bit in the way I use my body to express that, and in my thought processes."
-"Danny Boy" was recommended to you by Hoshino Gen.
"That's right. I met Gen-san (※2) on the show and he said, ‘This is a good song’. At that moment, I had a feeling that this was it. I decided almost immediately that I was going to skate to this song."
-Did it come easily?
"It's hard to find songs that inspire me and songs that, when I first listen to them, I can imagine myself standing there and skating to them. I've been searching really hard for songs, but it's not easy to find one. But that song just came to me. I had a feeling that this was it. The melody was not something I could choreograph by myself, and I felt that this song needed to be skated over and over again to mature, so I immediately thought of David (Wilson, ※3) and asked him for help. It was a quick development with the song, and I felt like it was a fateful encounter."
[※1] Performed by Keith Jarrett. Debuted at "Yuzuru Hanyu Notte Stellata 2024" in March this year. [※2] He appeared as a guest on Hoshino Gen's show "Ogen-san's Sabusuku-do" (NHK, broadcast last August). He played the role of "Ogen-san's younger brother" and talked about music. [※3] Canadian choreographer. Choreographed "Romeo and Juliet" for the free skating at Sochi Olympics, "Notte Stellata," and "Spring, Come", among others.

Part 3:
The final episode of an exclusive interview with figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu (29), who announced his professional debut two years ago on the 19th. He talked about "full effort," "mind, technique, and body," and his "ideal" as an athlete. (Interviewer: Megumi Takagi)
-During a press conference for "RE_PRAY," you said, "I can still improve the composition."
"Originally, in practice, I was practicing 'Messenger of Ruin' with the final axel as a 3A3T (a triple 1/2-triple toe loop combination jump). Sometimes I would also practice the first toe loop in the second half as a 4T3T (a quadruple toe loop-triple toe loop combination jump). I probably wouldn't be able to do it in a real performance, but I was practicing it as a way to build up my stamina and improve my skills. I had some time to spare, so I thought I'd like to do it if possible. I tried it on the final day of the Miyagi performance, and there were some flaws. I guess I was hoping that if I practiced more, I'd be able to do it."
-Will there be a composition as difficult as that (※1) this season as well?
"I would like to do it. However, I think the composition will be completely different depending on what I want to express. Is the challenge a quadruple jump, or something more physically difficult? Also, I think the way it is presented will be completely different depending on whether I am challenging myself expressively. If possible, I would like to improve the composition. However, when it comes to a tour, I wonder if I am really 100% confident that I can deliver something good to everyone. I think it is necessary to always consider the balance and make sure I am not overestimating myself."
-It was the same in the ice shows and exhibitions when you were competing, and of course it's still the same now. Why are you able to give it your all every time?
"On the contrary, I feel more uncomfortable if I don’t give it my all. Performing in front of people is in itself something that may or may not please them, but in that moment, it may also be a catalyst for a change in someone’s life, even if just a little. If it were my own performance, I don't think I could show a half-hearted performance."
-Is that always the case?
"Always. I think I've been like that since I was little. I think my physical ability is pretty high, but if I didn't give it my all, I wouldn't reach that level. Therefore, I had to remove that limiter and try to catch up with my sister (Hanyu started skating because of his sister, who is four years older than him) or try to reach her level, since I couldn’t get that far unless I gave it my all. For example, when I was a novice and I couldn't jump the triple or double axel properly. Other kids could jump them, but I was flexible, didn't have much muscle strength, and wasn't blessed with a body that was so good in terms of explosive power, but when I thought about wanting to be better than everyone else, or wanting to catch up with everyone else, that's why I kept giving it my all. I removed my limiter more than other people. Because I didn't want to lose. I wanted to be praised (laughs). So, removing the limiter is normal for me probably from a young age. I have an older sister, so there’s always someone at home to aspire to. So, I guess I had to remove the limiter in everything. And now I have a sense of responsibility. Because I am Yuzuru Hanyu, the question of how far I can go in my pursuit is gradually coming into play and giving it meaning. If I were to talk about my childhood, I think that's probably what it was like."
[※1] In "RE_PRAY"'s "Messenger of Ruin," he completed a highly difficult routine just like in a competition, including a single quadruple Salchow and toe loop, five consecutive quadruple toe loops, and two triple axels.
-How do you increase your concentration before a performance?
"In my case, theoretically, I think that if I can get excited or create a situation that I find enjoyable, I will naturally be able to concentrate. So, although I don't sing it out loud, I think that getting into music is what turns on my concentration switch. It's like my blood gets pumping, or like the switch in my brain changes. I guess it's the song, the music."
-You are still a complete athlete. Athletes often use the phrase "Shin-Gi-Tai” *," but where does ‘mind, technique, and body’ fit into your perspective, Hanyu-san?
"In the end, I think there's no point if you can't find a balance. If you excel in one area… For example, if your heart becomes very strong at one point, but your technique is not strong enough to match the size of your heart, then the heart itself will probably be destroyed and you will be swallowed up. So you definitely need the technique to express your heart. Even if you spread that heart and technique widely, if you don't have the physical strength, if your body itself isn't functioning well, then you will be swallowed up by your technique and your heart. In the end, I think if you really want to level up, you have to make everything bigger."
*心技体 (Shin-gi-tai) – Shin = mind/heart, Gi= skills/technique, Tai = physique/body
-What is an athlete?
"Now, I have the opportunity to work in various professional fields and have more opportunities to come into contact with people whom I really respect, I think that the people I consider to be the very best are all athletes. For example, there is the NHK programme ‘The Professionals’, and people like that are really athletes. Personally, I think the way they use their time, or the way they use their heart and soul, to achieve a certain goal or ideal is what makes them athletes. I don't know whether to call that an athlete or a professional, but that's how I've always been since my competitive days. I think that's what I would like to call myself, an athlete."
-You've often used the word "ideal" since the latter half of your competitive days. It sounds like a declaration of determination not to compromise on that.
"The reason I started talking about my 'ideal' towards the end of my competitive days was because, well… To be honest, I wanted to perform a certain way, but after all, it didn’t always lead to positive evaluation. That's when I decided to shift towards pursuing my ideal."
-Perhaps around Autumn Classic?
"The most significant was Autumn, I guess…Autumn 2019…? At that time, I had no choice but to reconsider and realise that the most important thing was to do what I wanted to do and perform the kind of performance I was aiming for, rather than worrying about scores. I felt that this was equal to making the fans happy. From then on, I am still on that same path. After I become a professional skater, I have to pursue it even more. Because I am skating for the fans. The ideal is getting higher and higher, and I am chasing that ideal."

Post-interview notes:
Last year, one year after turning professional, Hanyu-san sent a message to his fans to Sports Hochi. "I will continue to strive for my ideal and continue to constantly renew that ideal," he wrote. I think that this past year has been exactly like that.
The path he should take must have become clearer now. His expression was bright and full of contentment. We asked him to write down his aspiration for his third year on a coloured paper. He wrote, "Pursuing the 'ideal’”. "I'm skating for my fans, so the ‘ideal’ will get higher and higher," he said. Beautiful skating that blends in with the music. A range of expression that can only be achieved with advanced technique. I hope that Hanyu-san will continue to cherish the "ideal" skating that he has carefully cultivated. (Takagi Megumi)
