SUPERNATURAL ABILITIES: Enhanced Hearing: Rai has a heightened sense of hearing, similar to Uzui Tengen and Agatsuma Zenitsu, that allows them to hear & decipher layers upon layers of sound, allowing them to find demons’ through their hearing alone and even when on the opposite end of a city at times. They can hear (passively) the movements of all the individuals around them in a 3 mile radius, or (when concentrating) the internal workings of up to 10 people around them. This allows them to hear another persons internal body at work, such as; heartbeat, breathing, muscle movements, and so on. They refer to these sounds as “songs” (in no small part due to Tengen). Thanks to being able to hear even the slightest movements, they can hear when someone speaks in sign language, a skill which has allowed them to communicate and adapt during missions without having to speak. In tandem with their soul-sight, they are able to hear the emotions of other people who within their immediate radius, though they can’t hear thoughts. Even after having their eardrums burst by Urogi, their hearing is still on par with Tengens’ for the battle of the Infinity Castle. Soul-Sight: A unique ability that they share with their cousin, Yuuki Shiori, Rai can see the weight, shape, color, and presence of a persons’ soul. This allows them to more easily parse out how others feel (& even, to a slight degree, how they might think) in a certain situation, which they tend to use sparingly. Not wanting to risk assuming things and making a fool of themself, or embarrassing others, Rai tends to use their natural intuition, separate from their soul-sight, and have even learned how to repress their soul-sight ability. Instead, they tend to only use their soul-sight during missions, especially against demons’ with blood demon arts that are centered on illusions, as the illusions won’t work when they use their left eye. As Rai can only see this out of their left eye, they tend to use their soul-sight ability sparingly in combat, especially as using it for long periods of time can cause them headaches and a great deal of fatigue.

PSYCHOLOGY. Calm, collected, and quick to make others’ comfortable around them, Rai is still flashy and confident. Joking referred to a humbler version of Tengen, they enjoy a good joke, taking care of their friends, surprising people, and finding new ways to push the limits of their capabilities. Ambitious, if only to prove themself to the people they feel the need to impress, they are just as happy to let others take the spotlight when it comes to the praise after a successful mission. While they don’t want to have the responsibility of a Hashira, even though they are training to be one (in the traditional sense of tsuguko’s taking over for the Hashira they train under), Rai is quite skilled in leadership thanks to their ability to think quickly and rationally. While they maintain a cool air about them amongst most slayers, Rai is very affectionate with those they are close to, both verbally and physically. Partly due to their desire to prove themself, Rai also does their best to be a good influence for younger slayers, hoping that the younger ones like Tanjirou and Zenitsu can look to Rai for help like one might an older brother. Any slayer who uses Thunder Breathing tends to be called “little brother” or “littler sister” by Rai as well, but especially Kaigaku (who they lived with for a time while he trained) and Zenitsu, as both were trained by Kuwajima.

USUAL CLOTHING: Their uniform is quite similar to Tengens’, though in a dark teal, along with nichirin leg guards that cover their purple calf wraps / that they tuck their pants into, a purple sash that covers their white belt, a fingerless black glove on their right hand, and a detached sleeve on their left arm that is made from the Thunder Breathing yukata that Kuwajima gave them before they left for their Final Selection.

BACKSTORY. Growing up within a humble family, Rai deeply desired to prove themself by wanting to be the best older sibling they could be to Hotaru and Yosuke, the best younger sibling and helper to their older brother Akihiko, and a helpful hand for their parents. Learning wood working, carpentry, sewing, and cooking, Rai was all the more determined to be as helpful as they could be when Shiori, their cousin, was brought to live with them after the death of their aunt and uncle. It was after that tragedy that their father started to regard their left eye, which they shared with Shiori, as something of a cursed eye. After he took Shiori away, their relationship further strained, though it had no chance of being healed before the second tragedy occurred.

After their family was murdered by a demon, Rai was taken in by Kuwajima Jigorou and trained in the art of Thunder Breathing. While they were quite an average slayer at first, their innate stubbornness tended to have slayers of even a single rank lower (and a couple of those who were of higher rank even) look up to them for their determination in the face of exceptionally strong demons. Their warm personality also left quite an impression on Kaigaku, their junior, whom Kuwajima took in after Rai passed their final selection. While Rai saw Kaigaku as a younger brother, he saw a senior whose skill he had to eventually match and surpass in order to earn their respect. With Rai being sent on missions frequently, they weren't able to get through to him that he didn't need to push himself that hard. It was against such a demon, the most recently created Lower Moon 6, that Rai gained their signature lightning strike scar on the left side of their forehead and through their left eye. Due to their immense skill and determination during the fight, they were able to slay the Lower moon before the newly minted Sound Hashira, Uzui Tengen. Impressed by their skill and intense battle instincts, Rai was taken in by Tengen as his tsuguko. Shortly after, they were able to reconnect with their cousin, Yuuki Shiori, as Tengen had taken them to be backup for the squad Shiori had been a part of. Over the years, and thanks to having the rank of tsuguko, they were able to cultivate and master their own breathing style, Lightning Breathing, and change their weapon from the standard katana to that of a naginata. While it is far more clearly a derivative to Thunder breathing compared to Sound breathing, it allows Rai to fight more freely as they are able to incorporate both traditional slayer stances with certain Shinobi techniques.
