Lecturas de julio. Primera semana

I know that Yona of the Dawn is set in fake Korea but it still threw me for a loop starting a book translated from Korean and immediately coming across a character named Yona

thanks for the tag @the---hermit !
End of the Year Book Tag
Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?
Hmm, I definitely want to finish Transgender Marxism edited by Elle O'Rourke, Black Leopard Red Wolf by Marlon James and the combined volume of Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own and Three Guineas. These have been on my stack In Progress Books wayyy too long...
Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year?
I don't really read according to seasons, it's just whatever whenever.
Is there a new release you're still waiting for?
Just today I got the mail that my edition of Murtagh by Christopher Paolini got shipped! So I'm waiting on that to arrive!
What are three books you want to read before the end of the year?
I'm really excited to read My Favorite Thing Is Monsters - Emil Ferris, I Will Greet The Sun Again - Khashayar J. Khabushani and Disaster Tourist - Yun Ko Eun!
Is there a book you think could still shock you and become your favourite book of the year?
Considering I already read When the Angels Left the Old Country by Sacha Lamb AND Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo this year (and also I reread the Tarot Sequence books) there's no way that'll happen.
Have you already started making reading plans for next year?
I rarely do, I have - like the last couple of years - a loose plan to try and finish all the unread books on my shelf which so far I have soundly failed.... I'll just try again next year. Oh, and I'm REALLY hoping Alecto the Ninth will be released next year, the wait is driving me insane!
please feel tagged if you want to do this!

I'm so proud of you, Kimmy! Sobrang dami mong pinagdaanan this year. Proud na proud ako sa‘yo! Grabe, nakayanan mo ‘yun?! Be stronger pa ha, you'll face more problems and traumas pa pero alam kong kakayanin mo. (Wala kang choice gago) You have to be strong for yourself, for your special ones. ALCHEMY OF SOULS // KDRAMA DİZİ YORUMU
UYARI : Yazılar genel olarak spoiler içerebilir. İçermeyedebilir.
İmdb puanı : 8,8 Benim Puanım: 9
Drama: Alchemy of Souls (English title) / Return (literal title)
Hangul: 환혼
Director: Park Joon-Hwa
Writer: Hong Jung-Eun, Hong Mi-Ran
Date: 2022
Language: Korean
Country: South Korea
Cast: Lee Jae-Wook, Jung So-Min, Minhyun, Yu Jun-Sang, Yoo In-Soo, Hong Seo-Hui, Shin Seung-Ho, Lim Chul-Soo, Ko Yoon-Jung
Daha önce onu ilk kez “Because this is my first life” dizisinde izlemiştim. All of us are dead dizisinde ölmek bilmeyen akıllı bir zombi vardı.

Note
1, 4, 15 and 16 !!
Thank you!!!
1. do u prefer a standalone or a series?
Standalone by all means. I rarely ever read series, for some reason it's really hard for me to follow through
4. a book which had a tv adaption that was better than the book itself?
I don't know how controversial this is but Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation? I tried the book twice but it wasn't for me.
15. an underrated book?
I'm looking at average ratings and The Disaster Tourist by Yun Ko-eun (that i just read the other day) and A Cup of Rage by Raduan Nassar are way at the bottom with few readers. I really enjoyed both
16. the book that made u fall in love with reading?
Confessions of a Mask by MIshima. Omg you can see the aftermath

storygraph september wrap up!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hilma af Klint - Julia Voss 3.75⭐️
Extremely comprehensive and well researched expanded english tanslation of Julia Voss's biography on Hilma af Klint. I do wish she had included some reflection on or acknowledgements of the origins of af Klints spiritualism instead of just mentioning it "drawing from Hindu or Indian practices". But all in all it was a fascinating account of a very dedicated woman's life.
Sauhund - Lion Christ 3.75⭐️
A german book about a true charastrophe of a young gay man in 1970-80s Munich. It's somehow sad, heartwarming and funny all at once? A huge part of the enjoyment while reading came from the book being written in dialect. It's not super thick dialect but enough for color and since I grew up with a dialect similar to bavarian it felt like I was listening to someone from my birthplace tell me a story. The one flaw this book has for me is that the actual character growth montage moment is skipped in favor of showing the after which undermined a lot of the build up the previous 3/4 of the book spent so much time on. It still manages to end impactful though and was a weirdly satisfying and heartachey read.
The Chaos Walking Trilogy - Patrick Ness
The Knife of Never Letting Go 4.5⭐️
The Ask and the Answer 5⭐️
Monsters of Men 4.75⭐️
If you watched the movie with Tom Holland you should immediately forget it entirely because that movie is stupid and bad, does these magnificent books a huge disservice and go read The Knife of Never Letting Go instead!!! These books go crazy, I'm kicking my own ass about not picking them up earlier! A friend recommended them to me and they were SO RIGHT TO!!! First of all, Todd and Viola have such a totally normal relationship with each other, I ate it all up. Their relationship is the center of the books for a reason. And then the books pull absolutely zero punches about privacy, masculinity and war! I was biting my nails and yelling at my friend via text the entire time, I felt So Many Emotions!!
Sprache und Sein - Kübra Gümüşay 5⭐️
Quick read on the relationship between language and the society we are building with the way we talk and how we treat it. Compassionate.
Moths: A Natural History of Our Planet's Moth Life - Rachel Warren Chadd, Andrei Sourakov 5⭐️
MOTHS! I love them! This book was an amazing introduction and overview over moth lives, their territories and their biology! So many great pictures and really accessible to non-natural-science people as well!
Das Gewicht des Ganzen - Sven Heuchert
A german nature writing book about grief. I was really happy to have finished it so quickly because despite being written stylistically well I simply did not understand what anyone gets from this type of book. This was just deeply not my genre or type of story. (Also the author made a weird focalization decision in my opinion by having main character A show up as 3rd person narrator but main character B got a 3rd person narration as WELL as a 1st person narration? Bewildering and no help for the story to be honest.)
The Disaster Tourist - Yun Ko-Eun 3⭐️
A short satirical novel about Ko Yona who is employee at a disaster travel agency, goes on a business trip to a sinkhole to evaluate the package the agency offers and uncovers a conspiracy. The set up dragged a bit for my tastes but the book made its point and even gave me that feeling of impending doom.

1. The Disaster Tourist: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
An interesting and thought provoking plot that introduced and explored a range of perspectives on what, I hope, is the no-longer-shadowy world of disaster tourism. I was impressed with the simplicity and ease with which the protagonist and reader were quickly immersed in vividly precarious world. It was both strange and disturbingly real. It was somewhat predictable, but there were a number of well developed characters considering the length of the story, and though I’m not normally a fan of ambiguity, it made a pleasant change to confront a protagonist whose fate/motivations/character are never explicitly revealed or judged. The reader is left to draw their own conclusions, to evaluate their own opinions.
2. Redhead by the Side of the Road: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
A slow one, but poignant and, for me, definitely one that resonated personally. A powerful, bittersweet, but ultimately hopeful ending, which honestly... I needed. The characters made the novel, and though I don’t think this book is for everyone, I found warmth and humour and understanding in Tyler’s words that make me want to read more of her work.
3. Things we Say in the Dark: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
A really fun seasonal read with a unique and compelling and clever structure. I genuinely can’t choose a favourite story/section; I found the collection to be very cohesive and consistently strong. Logan is a skilled writer easily able to inspire fear, dread, anxiety, disgust, and a host of other heart-pounding sensations. I chose to rate it as I did purely because I felt the tropes and tone were too familiar, though I suspect this has more to do with me becoming slightly desensitised and needing to increase the diversity of my reading choices - or at least switch more frequently between genres. That being said, I really want to read more of Logan’s books!
4. The Death of Vivek Oji: ⭐️⭐️
Struggling to articulate exactly why, but this just... didn’t sit well with me. There was some wonderful explorations of themes such as loyalty, honesty, identity, and family, but it was heavy. Bleak. I understand that stories like this are important, necessary, and that we cannot always have happy or even hopeful endings, but I’ve read too many similar tragedies. There was no payoff for the emotional investment, and it’s difficult to invest in the first place when you know the fate of the protagonist from the beginning, and the protagonist seems... content with that fate? Maybe I just read this at the wrong time. (Pro tip: don’t read sad books when you’re sad!)
5. Ghosted: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Some wonderful character development throughout, and definitely made a significant emotional impact. I do feel that the story drew on slightly longer than necessary, but the reader was kept guessing and I was happy enough to follow the clues and reflect on the myriad relationships and characters offered.
6. White Ivy: ⭐️⭐️
I was disappointed by this book, which had such a promising premise, and started so strongly! Yang is, no doubt, a skilled writer, but it was challenging to persist with a story in which none of the characters seemed to have any notable, let alone likeable, traits. The pacing felt off, and I found myself wanting to skim through most of the book whilst other significant moments seemed to be passed over without making the impact they could have. Though it wasn’t a bad read, it didn’t feel like anything new or remarkable.
7. Earthlings: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ok, so this book is definitely not for everyone, and anyone picking it up expecting another Convenience Store Woman is... in for a shock™️! Please research content/trigger warnings before reading! Heartbreaking and heartwarming and disturbing and, yes, gross, this will satisfy your need for something strange. It was a good palette cleanser (or warper) after some underwhelming and sluggish recent reads, and left me with a not-unpleasant out of body sensation wondering wtf I’d just read. Simply put, this was my jam.
8. Our Wives Under the Sea: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
First, a very unrelated note: I read and finished this in the course on one stormy, muggy night which definitely set The Mood™️. I’m not quite sure how to discuss this book. Armfield has captured the sea itself: something vast and unfathomable, changeable, consuming, incomprehensible, and primordial. Dreamy and viscerally, elementally haunting, Our Wives is surreal, horror adjacent, but hits in a very tangible way. I personally loved the style, and the dual perspective and relatively short chapters made what could have been a slow read a very easy one. Through a fantastical lens, Armfield invites us to explore ideas about relationships, communication, trauma, and grief, loss, and reality. A lot is up for interpretation, and I think you could find something new in this book with every re-read.
9. Becoming My Sister: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Okay, so on the scale of ‘normal’ to ‘introduced to V. C. Andrews at a wildly inappropriate age by a mother who clearly had no memory of the book she’d just given her daughter, and no way to anticipate the oncoming obsession’, it’s pretty clear where I fall. Personally I’ve never been disappointed by an Andrews book, and this one was no exception. The writing is witty and thrilling and subtly eerie, and Andrews is absolutely fantastic at drawing the reader into the grip of twisted, claustrophobic family dynamics. Her characters are lifelike, haunted and haunting. She has a singular understanding of the pain and beauty of girlhood, womanhood, and coming of age. I would almost describe this as a ‘guilty pleasure’ read but honestly I’m not sorry. No shame.
10. Ghosts: ⭐️⭐️
Such a promising premise, and so many elements I can usually connect with, but... I think this is just a story I’m tired of reading. It was vague/disconnected and judgemental in a way that reduced the impact of the book overall, at least for me. There was little to humanise or identify in the protagonist (or indeed most of the characters), and I felt the most interesting aspects of the book were not given the focus they deserved, both of which meant key emotional moments fell flat for me. I think for the right person, at the right time, this is a beautiful and moving story; that person just wasn’t me.
