I feel like we don't praise SS enough for how they handled YSA's character.
Sure her role kinda falls off in the later chapters but her character arcs are *chefs kiss*
She was initially introduced as a potential love interest like in most action/fantasy novels but then she was just a friend, a co-worker that turned into a friend and their dynamics as a co-worker is something unique to both of them, and for a while it's what kept both of them sane and in that moment they knew each other the best. And honestly the whole library scene could've been a perfect set up for sangah getting a tragic ending, ik it was probably always meant to be that kdj got such a "tragic ending" (only talking abt the inital ending cuz i believe he comes back in the epilogue but anyways) due to the amount of foreshadowing the novel has, but like in another novel both of them couldve met a tragic demise or sangah honestly could've sacrificed herself for him if it was written by any other author where orv has a romance as a subgenre.
But because SS wrote ORV the way they did, she doesn't get a tragic ending, her tragedies weren't just for the sake of being tragic that most writers usually give to characters that were introduced as "a nice person". Her tragedies were more due to how her potential is constantly hindered, her tragedies isn't just for the sake of tragedy but because the system itself is inherently gruesome.
It was never about how she had to toughen up or admonish all her morals, it was never about her, her femininity, her talents. It was about how she was constantly undermined by the people around her and how it's incredibly harder to maintain that sense of self under a cruel system. But she did anyways because SS wrote her with such nuance. They easily could've gone the typical nice girl to girlboss route and it would've been fine with how they write female characters. But subversing a subversion makes her so much moreee complex. I love her

My thoughts here mainly revolve around YSA as the mary sue/female lead type character:
She goes from being this perfect woman to. just being a woman. And my idea is that the weight gain isn't there to make her "unconventionally attractive," or whatever other dumb phrase you wanna use to avoid calling someone ugly, but to make her conventionally attractive, yet realistic.
Instead of looking like a skinny waifu character, she looks like a skinny human woman. Her hair swaying in the nonexistent wind isn't as perfect, her magic blush is missing and she has eyebags. She's still hot, just more human.

Even if TWSA had finished without the world ending, KDJ would have been okay

tonight i was thinking about orv’s theme about how yjh as a character, and to a larger extent people, will in some ways always be unknowable. (orv spoilers following, read at your own risk)
i feel like i’ve seen a few posts on here that somewhat take this theme to an extreme, leaning *hard* into that “kdj doesn’t actually know yjh like at all” which while on the right track, i feel completely misses the point. Orv goes out of its way to showcase that kdj actually understands yjh to a scary degree, even once they’re out of the early scenarios and the gap between kdj’s knowledge and yjh’s personhood grows larger, there are still things about yjh that *only* kdj can fundamentally understand. And I don’t think that the novel does anything to discredit that understanding, only says that there is much more to yjh. In the same manner, even if you’ve known someone for years, spent all your time with them, there can and will always be new things for you to learn about them. The danger that orv speaks of is trusting in that assumption, that your understanding will be enough and you don’t have to keep an eye out for more developments. That the person you know will forever stay the same. And this isn’t a kdj problem either, fundamentally a lot of the big disagreements that happen between kdj and yjh in the latter half of the novel are born from both of them misconstruing what the other is thinking, trusting that their understanding of the other is deep enough to base their judgements off of. (Post first murim destruction, divorce arc, yjh thinking kdj scattered his soul on purpose, etc.)
As always with orv’s themes, we can view it in a meta sense as well. Kdj’s understanding of yjh as a character is so complete that it’s nearly flawless- until the story begins to deviate and a yjh grows outside the parameters that kdj’s judgements are based on. Even before then, there was always more to yjh- but as readers, we can only understand a character as much as we see them. What you come away with from a story is your complete understanding, there is no growth outside of those boundaries because then it wouldn’t be an understanding of *that* character, you would be putting your own ideas and such into it. But talk to another person, and suddenly the same character you understand so clearly becomes someone else. Talk to the author, and they say something completely different. And can one truly claim to understand a character when the story will never talk about them in every conceivable way? What does it take to truly understand such a thing? Learning that 1863rd round hsy wrote ways of survival with such limited resources and knowledge on who yjh even is, and yet despite it all, still manages to write a story that captures so much of his essence. As orv readers, we know it isn’t everything- it could never encapsulate all of yjh, but the idea that even when one knows nearly nothing, you can still put on a facade of understanding.
We can get into a chicken or the egg argument with this, as 1863!hsy dictates how yjh acts with her writing, and that yjh in the 1863rd round is the one she comes to know before ever starting this story, but when it comes to this theme of the unknowable in the people around us, I don’t think this sort of debate is worth much. We know that yjh exists outside the story written, and how much of him is determined by hsy’s writing is negligible because no matter what, he always grows beyond it. Whether as 1864 or secretive plotter, it all comes back to that same point of there is always more to see within a person.
I don’t know quite where I want to go with this, only that I wanted an outlet for some of these thoughts inside my head, but one of the best things about this theme for me is how it answers itself. When the people around you become unrecognizable, what should you do? And orv says to reach out. To try. To understand. Kdj loses access to omniscient reader several times but always, always gains it back in orv (as far as i remember), because at the end of the day, he is not someone who stays trapped in his idea of who he knows yjh to be. Yjh too, even at the end of orv, is trying to learn more and more about kdj. Only when you are willing to hear out the other person, to learn about them every day, does this unknowable aspect become something less daunting.

do you have any favorite meta or analysis from yourself or other people for orv? reading peoples takes in the meta channel of orvcord (orv discord) was addicting and i want more. even if you dont I still want to hear you talk about things you like like its philosophy or inspiration and stuff.
Aaah, ok, I tried to answer this ask a few days ago and wrote like a few paragraphs each for some of my favorite meta things, but Tumblr just like deleted it when I tried to post( TT 。TT )... I've posted these things before and don't have the same energy to completely resummarize them so if you don't wanna search through my archive for the og posts you can go ahead and ask specifying questions but I'm just gonna list my favorite meta things to analyze.
1. JHY's transmess & progression of transfem portrayals throughout the ORV narrative + implications on the idea of a 'character' between the expectations and intentions of writers and readers.
2. YSA's role in the story and commentary on relationship between female characters and roles with agency in narrative + emphasis on Journey to the West commentary in particular.
3. Reader/writer/character trifecta in ORV epilogues, particularly how the OD works in terms of KDJ's character, reader expectation, and the idea of 'probability.' + the idea that when KDJ looked up WoS the first time he genuinely just typed something like 'how do you keep living in a terrible world like this' and HSY's story with YJH was the answer that came up.
+ Bonus is drawing connections between KDJ's mom and the myth her constellation backer is from, that post might be more recent? Then of course anything that's like connections between KDJ's youth and the way he acts as an adult.

Post structuralist anon here TYSM that was a very interesting perspective, I also don't know much abt post structuralism tbh, its a new thing I discovered while rereading Orv and looking at meta posts lol. Anyways you mentioned LHS in the post too 👀 can you elaborate cuz ngl it's kinda hard to think of any meta abt him. You don't have to answer this rn!
sure!
i was talking about how orv adults frequently have very gendered arcs, and lhs is a standout example imo. yjh and ysa have the more overtly Gendered Fictional Role stuff (male action hero and female heroine respectively) but lhs has a comparatively more grounded arc that deals with real life highly gendered stuff. his entire thing is that he's a soldier. and not just that he's a soldier, but that he was drafted and could not figure out a better place to exist outside the military. despite the military being a source of trauma for him, despite it crushing any individuality he could have, he still felt like he could not act as an agent of his own destiny without someone giving him orders. when you consider that in south korea the military draft is mandatory for men, that's a really highly gendered background!

Do you think KDJ x HSY has gotten more popular in the fandom?
yes and no.
lemme explain
yes because firstly, as we know, orv fandom is constantly growing on all sorts of social media. the more the fandom grows the more posts will pop up and engagement will be had
secondly, orv is a meta heavy novel. and hsy, equally so, a meta heavy character. being one of the main three characters means that she has close relationships with the majority of the orv cast (sure kdj yjh and ysa are closer but you get the point) in fact I'd go so far and say that out of all 3 of yhk hsy is the most balanced when it comes to her relationships and i can make the argument that kdj is not too close with lsh and yma, or yjh is not close with ysa, jhw (outside of 0th turn) and lgy (<- altho hes more than willing to throw hands with him lmao)
now circling back to doksoo, whether in a platonic sense or a romantic sense, they are one of the key duos in orv so orv fans are bound to talk about them in whatever sense that we like them as.
now no, bcs as i said orv fandom is growing, doksoo shippers are growing in numbers, but so are shippers of other ships. i dont want to sound vague, but it also depends what your criteria to determine a ship's popularity is? likes on a fanart on twitter? notes on a post on tumblr? doksoo winning a poll on orv subreddit? the number of fics on ao3??
bbnim's sangsoo (not tagged) art reached 100k likes on twitter. another artist's joongdok (also not tagged) art reached 130k likes. does that mean that every single person that has interacted with these fanarts has been a shipper? no, it doesn't. someone can vaguely describe a doksoo trope on a tumblr post and go viral. does this mean that every single one that liked and reblogged that post is a doksoo shipper? also no. reddit is a different landmine altogether. m/f ships have always thrived there, until you consider that their shippers are dudebros who very much do not create any type of fan content.
now, while not the absolute factor, I'd say that the most reliable indicator is the number of fics (on different platforms such as ao3, wattpad, threadfics on twitter, mini fics on tumblr. and so on) and just wow theyre pitiful over there
tldr, these past few months that ive been active in the fandom I've noticed that doksoo shippers genuinely don't seem to grasp the general rules of the shipping side of the fandom(s) they lack imagination and delusion which you need if you want others to engage with your ship and fan content(they also spend way too much time trying hard to disprove joongdok moments but anw)

oooooo please tell me (who knows nothing on the subject) about orv swap au
hehehe. hehehehehehe. hehehehehehehhehehehhheheheh <- guy who is so normal
the premise of orv swap au (name has yet to be finalized) is this: what if kdj and yjh swapped narrative positions (reader <-> character) but very little else? what if a video game player enters a time loop to save his favorite character from dying over and over again and also to end the apocalypse?
admittedly it's not super fleshed out yet (a lot of the changes this premise would introduce are still not hammered out yet) but here are some points under the cut (novel spoilers ahead!)
orv swap au starts with pro gamer yjh who feels :/ abt his job, but hey, it pays the bills. despite (or maybe because of) his relative popularity as a pro gamer and networking with the agency/sponsors/people to impress, he's kind of isolated in a way that's detrimental, a facade of someone he's not whenever he's on camera
something to play around with is the idea of agency? maybe this yjh doesn't feel like he has any and has his hands tied between the lifestyle and being under public scrutiny and not having enough of a support system to leave everything behind. maybe he doesn't know what else he would even do. maybe he's aimless and drifting with nothing to hold on to.
his favorite video game is what i've been thinking of as World's Hardest To Play Indie Game (not based on difficulty but just on the experience of consuming it) a boring, exposition heavy, player-hostile, poorly designed, slightly buggy mess of a barely-playable game: twsa, a game that was not finished upon release and experiences with sporadic updates every now and then.
the ending tree to this game is so convoluted its insane. also theres no save states so if you die (very likely) u restart babeyyy.
twsa (video game) does have multiple endings, all of which happen when kdj, your main character, dies. some are farther into the apocolypse than others, some paths require meta knowledge of future events or character actions or items or whatever. the "true ending" is either analogous to the original 1863: kdj makes it to the end at the cost of everyone he loves, or hsy's modified 1863: kdj makes himself enemy of the scenario to secure a way out for the kimcom remnants.
there's branches on the choices tree where everyone dies and everything sucks and is bad forever and theres choices to make where kdj gets to make a family and they don't really get to settle down but they can get pretty close to it among the ruins of the apocalypse. through all his testing, yjh finds that these endings are nice but peter out - to get to the end of the apocalypse yjh has to claw his way there inch by painful inch, through betrayal and sacrifice, and he still cant fully get past it
i originally wanted to finagle a yoohankim 3 way swap but i couldn't figure it out. swap aus are a lot easier to work with when they're even numbers, at least to me, so this au features a ysa who is a video game company employee by day and by night she really has become god this time (and also a terrible indie dev). and this is how jungdoksang can still win !!!!
also yjh's coworker from Real Life hsy :) i haven't decided if she's like an employee for the same agency, or if she's someone else in the gaming circles that yjh interacts with sometimes (in my heart theyre in like some sort of discord server together), or something like that but she's around. whatever she does she is twitter cancelled for something. to me.
the only other character swaps are lsk and yma. yma is yjh's estranged sister (in broad strokes there's a vague bad parent situation going on here) (they used to be close until they drifted apart and slowly started hating each other [there is an abyss between them that neither of them can bridge]) (he feels that she betrayed him and threw him under the bus so he left [maybe he gets kicked out]) (she feels that he abandoned her to whatever situation they have going on [he didn't even try to take her with him]) and he has to find her when the apocalypse starts. yjh older sibling to yma gives us a whole different little dynamic to explore from kdj ysk (there's different levels of responsibility and guilt and blame when you're talking siblings that are soooooo interesting to me. sorry that i see any set of siblings and immediately try to figure out how to make them worse)
lsk is kdj's mom who appeared into existence at some point with kdj and they were both just adults. that's weird isn't it. oh well. i guess she can become a transcendent later too for funsies
everyone else stays in the same configuration of Real Person vs Character to me this is a very important aspect
this point has no precedent with the swap, nothing particular that would change to cause this, but it would be so funny if lgy was a little gamer boy who is an avid yjh hater. hates that guy. shows up to competitions to boo him. tunes into yjh's silent no-mic speedrunning streams to mald in chat but yjh +mods don't ban him bc its kinda funny.
anyways the apocalypse starts when yjh and his coworker/fellow gamer hsy are on a train to twitchcon and lgy is also there (also headed to twitchcon) and he brings bugs because he likes them but also to sabotage yjh specifically. its just funny if this happened. you understand
instead of having reader-related skills and abilities, yjh's skills are video game player based! he gets flavor text insight on people, location, and items, things like that. notably, he has the ability to reset, to bring himself back to the beginning of the apocalypse
orv swap proper follows yjh as the Player of the Game (Consumer of the Narrative) who lives hundred of lifetimes in this ruined-world-become-reality "replaying" [read: time looping through] the game to reshape it to save his fave character from self implosion (kdj with no dissociation is very prone to dying. all the time.). to revisit the idea of playing with yjh and the idea of agency, of creation, the only way to get past the apocalypse is to go off the beaten path, to choose options that weren't even there in the game. when in space, at his darkest point, yjh becomes a writer. in this story, at his darkest point, he has to become a creator too
please do not ask me how the epilogues go i dont know how the epilogues go (i don't want to throw yjh back into a train for milennia after he Just went through a thousand resets so i'm sending kdj for that but i havent fully planned how or why)
anyways, hope that helps!!! :)
#orv au#orvswap#i think i will main tag this. just the one tag tho. poorly planned au be upon ye.#orv#orv spoilers#<- for blacklists!#i only realized after creating this au that this is just how p//mmm goes except its videogame themed and hater lgy is there lol#anyways wheres that post that says time loops are about tragedy and theyre about saying i will make this right#and secret third thing time loops are about love#also each individual dynamic for the creater-player-character triangle in this is so interesting to me to explore like#you have the new kdj-yjh one (mostly similar tbh. was the crux of the au after all) which is a fun space to play in#but then you have a brand new kdj-ysa one to work with which is !!!! a writer and her character. a creator and her creation#and then you have ysa-yjh as the creator and her audience of 1!!!!!!! where is yjh that he needs to be saved? how does ysa answer that call#to love to the point of creation.... to tear the world asunder..... to create the worlds most unplayable rpg.......#lets meet again in another life. ysa reaches out toward yjh but cant reach him before she wakes up. cant quite tell him its not his fault#and Dont Even get me Started on yoo sister dynamics ill go insane#because theyre siblings but for a while (and def at the beginning of the story) it hurts to be around each other (its a betrayal#its a pang in your chest its a you were supposed to protect me and you were supposed to love me and i dont even know you anymore)#but also the swap means the 4th wall eats yma and leaves yjh begging for her back ('dont you hate her?' 'shes my little sister'#which is neither agreement nor denial but also both at once)#its ya boi#tango mango#anyways thanks for the ask im very normal about the ask

uhhhh regular ysa is the linguist obvi. canonical. wedding planner ysa is the person whose running that kinda project and smth kind of. hypothetical Dark!ysa would be the god. dark as in inverted not necessarily evil. the precondition for ysa to want to kick back and fuck with people for enrichment reasons. just kinda see whats happening. and perhaps to encourage engineering/langauge growth. thus. dark ysa is. kdj!ysa. okay cool thanks.

the meta narrative aspect of ORV is fascinating [SPOILERS UP TO CH 70]
i’m only on CH 70, but even in early chapters there is an emphasis on story and storytelling that is intriguing—the MC is literally a ‘reader’, streamers bear a ‘storyteller’s oath’, and the characters’ are watched by higher beings who derive entertainment through their actions (i.e. the audience of a narrative)
with the revelation of the mechanism behind the Absolute King scenario, the relationship between the constellations and the incarnations is explicitly spelled out as a myth-making process, and I suspect KDJ’s end goal is to destroy the somewhat parasitic relationship between constellations and incarnations?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the fact that half-hearted readers can become ‘characters’ once their future knowledge from engaging with the original text has run out also raises some interesting implications. It doesn’t happen to all ‘real world people’ as evidenced by YSA and LGY, presumably because they didn’t know they were in the world of a novel (they have no reason to perceive themselves as characters of a fictional world).
I’m not quite sure why it happened to the former prophets or what this means yet, but maybe knowing that the world was originally fictional actually made them more vulnerable/unable to pull away from the ‘story’ aspect of it? but they dropped WoS early on, meaning that they weren’t invested in the narrative... so why did they internalize the setting enough to become characters themselves?

ORV x KH AU
Timeline:
ORV - Either after Episode 64 or Somewhere in a time between Episode 481 & 482
Kingdom Hearts - Some weird time before the end of KHIII
Plot:
Heartless has invaded the Star Stream and have decided to target South Korea first. No one in South Korea knows about Heartless, so they have called ‘Gwisin’ because of reports of Incarnations who have been attacked by these creatures behaving similarly to the reanimated people from the first Sub-Scenario in the novel or like Ghost.
As the ‘Gwisin’ rise, the Star Steam has detected the Probability of being able to defeat them is very small. It was about to call forth the Final Scenario prematurely when Sora’s group arrived.
Sora, Riku, Kairi, Goofy, and Donald were taking a break traveling in a Gummi Ship before the big battle against Xehanort when a portal appeared in front of the ship and sucked the group in. The portal then spit them out in front of Earth facing the Korean Peninsula.
The group sends down Sora, Donald, and Goofy to check things out. Only Sora arrives in Seoul, Korea.
Then this message pops up in front of Sora.
[Inca-Cons- Keyblade Wielder, ‘Sora’, has incarnated into the Scenario!]
Utterly confused at the development, he gets a call from his GummiPhone and it turns out this World is rejecting the presence of Donald and Goofy for some odd reason. So Riku and Kairi end up coming down.
As Kairi and Riku arrive, Bihyung, or a random Dokkaebi, poofs into existence and greets himself when he sees the message that appears with Kairi and Riku.
[Inca-Cons- Keyblade Wielder, ‘Kairi’ has incarnated into the Scenario!]
[Inca-Cons- Keyblade Wielder, ‘Riku’, has incarnated into the Scenario!]
The Dokkaebi, Riku, and Kairi are confused as Sora when Heartless shows up chasing after two kids. The trio of Keyblade wielders leap into action and defeat the Heartless. After battle the kids are looking at the trio like there is hope and drags the trio with them to their home.
The Dokkaebi poofs out of existence to report back to the Bureau as the group of people leave.
On the way to the place, the two kids introduce themselves as Shin Yuseong and Lee Gilyeong. The two kids ask how the Keyblade Wielders can defeat the ‘Gwisin’. This brings in a round of explanations and clarifications as the Keyblade Trio vaguely learns about the situation of this World.
It was then a message pops up in front of the Destiny Island Trio.
[The hidden scenario has arrived!]
+
[Hidden Scenario – Save The World]
Category: Hidden
Difficulty: ???
Clear Conditions: Find the World Heart & seal it to prevent invasion of outsiders who interfere with the Star Stream, ???
Time Limit: –
Compensation: ???
Failure: The entire ‘Star Stream’ plunges into darkness, you will no longer be able to visit this world, ???
Hidden pieces will reveal themselves as you progress.
*Talk with Incarnations and Constellations to learn more about the situation
+
One of them asks what is a hidden scenario and this makes the kids stop dead in their tracks. They look at the Keyblade Wielders, then each other, then hurries back to their home with renew vigor with Destiny Island Trio chasing after them.
The small group arrives at the Kim Dokja Company Industrial Complex and is greeted by a couple of worried adults. LGY and SYS tell the two adults about what happened to them and introduce the Destiny Island Trio.
This leads to the two adults introducing themselves as Yu Sangah and Kim Dokja. After introductions, YSA chats with the Destiny Island Trio. KDJ uses this chance to activate his Character List skill onto Sora, but runs into a problem.
[Exclusive skill, ‘Character List’, is activating!]
[This person isn’t registered in ‘Character List.’]
Which means that these three should be similar to LGY & YSA, but then he gets the following messages
[Currently collecting information about the corresponding figure.]
[Unable to collect significant information about the corresponding figure.]
This is starting to freak KDJ out a bit from how fast the message appeared. He opens window to see what information is gathered.
+
[Character Information]
Name: Sora
Age: ?? Years Old
Private Attribute: Keyblade Wielder (Myth), ???
Exclusive Skills: ???
Overall Evaluation: A person who the Star Stream called. His purpose here is something only those with the same Attribute knows. His real powers work outside of the Star Stream, making him a great ally or dangerous individual against those that go against those that try to invade the Star Stream.
Unable to gather more information.
*Observe ‘Sora’ to gather more information
+
After reading the Overall Evaluation, he wonders what is happening because none of this happened in WOS.
(Um, this is where the linear thought process ends. From here on it just random stuff)
- The Destiny Island Trio end up in a partnership with KimCom to clear the Destiny Island Trio’s Hidden Scenario.
- Keyblade Wielders and KimCom have this long debate whether the Heartless are called ‘Heartless’ or ‘Gwisin’ that the Star Stream got tired of it and added Heartless as a hidden enemy that must be avoided at all cost named ‘Heartless’.
- Keyblade Wielders are broken in the Star Stream against Heartless, but is slightly above average against Incarnations/Constellations.
- The unique magic of Keyblade Wielders does not rack up any Probability because it is mechanics from outside of the Star Stream. (Body on the verge of dying? Use Curaga ((I’m looking at you Kim Dokja)), Need to set a monster on fire, but out of flammable items? Fira).
- Donald and Goofy are stuck in the Gummi Ship as support and the ‘Constellations’ for the Keyblade Wielders if anyone asks.
- Dokkaebi’s want to try and add the Destiny Island Trio to their streams, but none of them realize that they can’t enter streams normally for the longest time.
- With the odd status of ‘Keyblade Wielders’, the GummiPhones are connected to the Star Stream that they can chat with Constellations and access the Moggle shop from them.
- While fighting together, KimCom learns that anything fused with Divine, Light, or just high enough ability can kill the Heartless. They also learn that JHW’s Hour of Judgement is an efficient Heartless Killer as well.
- Anyone with the Darkness attribute or abilities has a high chance of going berserk and getting consumed by the Heartless. But they also have the ability to temporarily stun the Heartless if the Heartless is weak enough.
- Kairi’s additional status as ‘Princess of Light’ gives her some meta abilities that she would have taken longer to realize they were there if it wasn’t for the Star Stream’s game mechanics.
- The Keyhole appears after a big boss fight that ends up with KDJ being fussed over by everyone in KimCom with YJH and HSY in the center. The three shine a bright light and makes the Keyhole appear at the center of KDJ’s phone.
- Sealing the Keyhole actually requires all three of them working together because of what the Keyhole represents to this World.
Some character interactions I want to see.
- Sora and Yu Junghyeok (Yoo Junghyeok): Talk about sacrifice and friends. Their important companions. Cooking.
- Riku and Han Suyeong (Han Sooyung): What they will be willing to do for their friends. What they will/have sacrificed. Sins of the past and resolve for the future.
- Kairi and Kim Dokja: What it means to love and care for your companions. Having the love of adopted parents. Learn from one another. KDJ- Self-Love. Kairi- How to stay calm in any situation.
- Kairi and YJH: Training. YJH takes Kairi to get training from Breaking the Sky Sword Saint. YJH and Kairi just having a good time where they can relax and train.
That’s about it. I will reblog and add more later if I come up with something

.. eres fuerte y tienes que creerlo, yo tu Dios nunca he fallado y nunca voy a fallar.

Seeing your answered ask about metas makes me want to share this list someone made about ORV’s literary references: https://twitter.com/Jomeimei421/status/1806147303004336632
I think this same person also said something about ORV being a blend of low-brow fiction and high-brow literature and I agree. I would like to see a legitimate academic paper referencing or breaking down ORV, and now that I think about it, maybe this has already happened and I just don’t know how to find something like that.
This list is honestly such a great resource, thanks for sharing :)))) <3333
I would add the samguk yusa and samguk sagi to this list tho, even though the references might count as 'myths' or an oral tradition that's the nature of the older historical texts. I think I have a couple breakdowns of the references to the Samguk yusa, a post about ljh's name and the historical ancestors referenced, and some stuff about JttW.
In the concept of high brow and low brow, I agree that ORV is very good at being like very respectful of anything that is a 'story' and I think good at portraying the sort of 'character' that some genres or reading types represent. I think one of my posts is definitely about how the KDJ relationship with his mom is very representative of the sort of evolution of webnovel culture out of classical literature and trauma literature scenes in the sort of 'professional,' established Korean publishing. Also as a Naruto guy I really respect the JttW arc for being like 'hey all middle grade action stories and shounen a little bit comes from JttW tbh.' I also think the premise of ORV is great as sort of the natural conclusion to like American gods or Rick Riordan type justifications for all religions being true bc people believe them: ok, then here's also one man's favorite anime boy being real because he believes in him and he's actually going to punch God now. Oh also a literary reference I guess is that metatron and etc are from the Talmud rabbinic scriptures. Though I think myths about him are mostly from kabbala / oral tradition (which stems from Judaism but even now there are Jewish people who think it's very wrong to call them Jewish beliefs. Part of that is probably that in more modern history kabbala has partially been developed and sort of appropriated by non-jewish people in a way that is kind of similar to orientalizing / mysticizing the more 'normal' Judaic beliefs practiced by wider Jewish communities ((think tiktokkers who are like I Am a Witch doinG Qabala but actually she's basically just writing creepypasta in her brain about things other people actually believe in that she knows nothing about)). At the same time, there is kabbala that naturally developed from people Jewish faith in the same way orphism or other 'occult' beliefs developed out of governmentally/societally enforced/accepted Greek and Roman religions throughout history. Fun fact: Sefer ha-bahir is apparently an influential text in the development of og kabbala and apparently literally describes the idea of transmigration so that is fun.)
Ok besides the historical stuff the media on the list I'm actually exposed to is just Han Kang and then Naruto (I watched some of one piece in middle school but retained very little of it tbh I just know who some of the guys are. Actually I just had a dream where I complimented a guy's one piece shirt and then he asked me if I liked the anime and I had to be like oh... No).
I did some research on YSA's reading 'taste' though and I think it's very fitting because they're realistic books with "literary value" that are like very relevant to society but obscure enough that you wouldn't make up reading them just to impress someone, unlike Han Myungoh claiming 'art of war' is his fave book (that's another lit reference in there somewhere I think? I just remember finding it fitting... It's the type of fit for business men who want to seem macho and smart but actually don't enjoy reading at all... I would say if they said three kingdoms was their favorite I would at least believe they read it or saw an adaptation but like art of war just isn't really a Story it's more like self help? Like there are stories but they're showing 'lessons' about war lol.)
