An unexplained and unjust ending to one of the greatest things to ever happen to me
I am selfish
I never cut myself into thirds
To give out to a crowd
Never gave them a piece of me
Just kept it all to myself
But you changed that you see
Made it easy to hand over the rarest piece
Simple to tell you all the rules and how to cheat
Quite suddenly I didn't feel so alone
Made me generous, don't you know
A great new feeling washed over me
Being loved and cared for
Tucked in at night by the knowledge of knowing that I had you and you had me
Times spent shrieking in cars to our favourite albums
Hours killed talking, just talking
We were the greatest pair
Until you hated me
And made it awfully clear
Spiraling down
Grabbing onto whatever I could hold
Just spent my time in bed
Couldn't really get up couldn't really do anything but think
Let my thoughts consume me and I passed over into territory I hadn't really walked before only looked at from a distance
Hoped it wouldn't get any closer
So I cried and I bled and I did all the things my doctor said, and more!
I broke mirrors looking at my own reflection
Chanted guilty till it felt right
Whispered evil till the bells chimed
Some sort of certainty was all I needed
Clarity that everyone wasnt just fumbling to avoid me
Looked for guidence in someone I called my friend
Didn't get an answer
Didn't even get the encouragement
You didn't beg me to stay
You never asked me to stay
You made it seem you couldn't care less if I stayed
Needed you to be what I had been
Needed you to help me
I was only asking for help
I was only asking for you to calm me
But you didn't even try
Yet I'm the guilty one
I'm the one who spread myself too thin yet never gave enough
I'm the selfish one
Yes, I'm the selfish one
Tore my eyes out in shame when I missed an opportunity to help you through the shit you wallowed in
Ran like a wild dog to your side at the slightest sign of peril
I gave it all up for you
I gave it all up for you
All you gave up for me was a friendship
And any chance of being civil
Any recognition of a good run
Just an abrupt and unexplained ending
Wherein all the fingers will be pointed at me
The selfish cruel one
Who never gave enough but spread herself too thin
You make me feel like I'm at school again
You make me feel like I'm at school again
I am the little girl in tears hiding because the kids were mean
The big kids were mean
The big kids are always mean
That's what makes them big
I never wanted to feel inferior again
I never wanted to feel inferior again
You will not make me feel inferior again
I am done playing this game
I am not evil
I am not selfish
I was just being human
Maybe you just got tired

"I celebrate this extraordinary book written by young people who believe, as I do, that peace is not only possible, it is unavoidable. — @isabelallende This anthology presents the work of over 150 young inner-city poets, reflecting on their experiences with violence and sharing their desires for peace and unity in their families, in their communities and across the globe. Each poet presents a unique perspective and voice; when read together their work becomes a powerful call for peace. Whether in the hands of educators, peace activists, poetry lovers, or other young writers, City of One is a compelling portrait of a generation of youth who use their words to re-envision the world. @writerscorps is a project by @sfpubliclibrary & @sf_arts_commission #writerscorp #auntlutebooks #youngauthors #poetry #youthpoetry
