Little things adults and older people can do to help younger people and children feel included, safe, and respected as an equal individual:
Ask before touching the young person - even for hugs. Ask before you take pictures of them, and let them see photographs of them before they are printed or sent to others (even family).
Apologize when you are wrong
Ask for a young persons thoughts on a subject, then engage with them after they have spoken
Demonstrate behaviour you want to see from them (see: apologizing). Say "excuse me," say "thank you," say "please" to them
Validate their feelings, even if they don't know how to express them just yet
Remember that this is the first time they've been alive, and that you've had way longer to "figure it out"
These are some things I wish other adults remembered when engaging with young folks. We so often forget what childhood felt like and how unfair it all was because we were often awarded freedoms as adults that we never had as children. These kids are equal to adults, and they deserve the same courtesy, respect, kindness, and understanding we give to other adults.

I just want to keep my job even though I don't know how to make memes. Buy our coffee. We've got holiday gifts for the coffee lover in your life.
Awesome Coffee is different because 1. we source our beans directly from small farmers collectives, 2. it's better and fresher than grocery store coffee, and 3. ALL of our profit goes to fight maternal and child mortality in impoverished communities, whereas almost all other coffee makes rich people richer, which is the dumbest thing that can be done with coffee (or other forms of wealth).

Rest in Power, Nex Benedict
A 16 year old kid who loved nature and looking after their cat Zeus. Who enjoyed reading, watching the Walking Dead, and playing Ark and Minecraft. They loved to cook and would often make up their own recipes. They did well in school, being a straight-A student. Rest in power a teen who was human and had interests and ambitions and challenges and friendships. A trans youth who was brutally murdered just for being trans, when that was only a fragment of who they were as a person.
Nex Benedict, Jacob Williamson, Brianna Ghey, and other trans youth like them were real people with real lives. They deserved better, longer, happier lives. They deserved to grow up and not fear for their lives. They deserve to be remembered as who they were, not just as another trans kid who was killed, as people with families and normal human lives.

If childfree people don't stop framing children's personhood -- not even children's rights or liberation, just the objective fact of their basic humanity -- as either forced parenthood or pedophilia, I'm going to walk into the ocean.
"Children are people. Children are members of society. Children are due the same basic human respect and consideration as any other members of society you might incidentally interact with while existing as a human in a society."
"OMG, you can't FORCE ME to share a society with your disgusting crotch goblins! You can't MAKE ME interact with MINORS against my WILL! Why are YOU PERSONALLY coming to my house and dropping off your screaming disgusting brat and disappearing, never to be seen again, and FORCING me to become this kid's new mother, which is a real thing I am somehow at risk of!
"And what do you mean, 'children are people'? You mean people you want to have SEX with, you pervert!? Why do you want children to be in society so bad, huh? So you can have ACCESS to them? For SEX? If I so much as GLIMPSE someone who might be under 30, I run a mile in the other direction, so there's no chance of having sex with them! Because I'm NORMAL!"

Sick of cis people, and even some trans people, mocking and judging trans folk for not passing. For "not even trying" to pass.
Passing is not achievable for so many people. It's also not even a goal for many people.
Me telling you I'm a man should be enough to get me treated like one. Yes I have a high voice. Yes I have hips. Yes I wear makeup and have long hair.
But why does it matter? Why does it deem me not worthy of the respect to have my correct pronouns used?
I had top surgery to feel more comfortable in my own skin. So I could end the constant pain and discomfort of binding.
I want to go on T to be more comfortable in my own skin.
I don't live to serve or fulfill the unrealistic expectations of bigots.

Though there are valid reasons to want characters to have their own identities, I think some people insist too much on the Batfamily having all individual, unique names. This is why the Orphan name persists so much in fandom, or even Wayne Family Adventures - it's a byproduct of seeing 'Batgirl' as transitory and lesser than. This is not only a misunderstanding of Batgirl, but a misunderstanding of legacy mantles. Legacy mantles aren't stepping stones towards individuality, but identities with symbolic and storied histories. Characters can, and sometimes should, end in a legacy role.
It's also interesting that this anti-legacy philosophy is exactly what DC adopted during the New 52. They destroyed virtually every legacy they could, including wiping Tim's Robin history, erasing the JSA, and deleting Cass and Steph's histories. We all agree New 52 was bad, but most people focus on the content/ramifications on a specific character, when it's the philosophy that was wrong. New 52 was an effort to diminish the power of legacy titles, and to dismiss many characters that fall under the legacy umbrella.
Some characters should grow out of their mantles, of course. But that doesn't make the mantle they grow out of less meaningful or important than the mantle they step into. If we want to leave the New 52 behind, we need to leave its anti-legacy philosophy behind, too.
