So today I heard this song playing somewhere.  I had never heard it before and it sounded decent, so I Shazam’d it, and later watched the video.  To my surprise, I saw the singer in a blanket fort with a bunch of other people in a pile of Care Bear plushies!  I was not expecting that! The artist is Troye Sivan, and the song is called “Youth”.  I had heard of Troye Sivan before and I’ve downloaded a few songs by him (”Wild” and “Strawberries and Cigarettes” are the two I can think of), but I just thought of him like any other EDM artist, I never knew anything else about him. So this video is about six years old, so it’s not new.  I don’t know tons about the details of it, but the youtube comments make it seem like the focus of the song and video is on Troye coming out as gay.   I don’t know the full background behind everything, but regardless, I think what’s cool about it is that to me, the song and video just kind of inspire a free version of love. So I think it’s particularly interesting that the artist and music video director chose to have Care Bear plushies in it!  Since the LGBQT+ community relates a lot to Care Bears, I wonder if there were direct ties to that or if it was just general coincidence because Care Bears are so soft and free.  They could have chosen just any random plushes, but they chose Care Bears in particular. Even though this video is six years old, I find it really cool that something so mainstream has Care Bears in it!  I mean, I know Care Bears are a worldwide brand, and there are definitely celebrities who like Care Bears and know what they are.  Still....it’s pretty cool for an international video with 179 million views to feature Care Bear plushies. But for me, I think my favorite part is the idea of just being together with a group of people and being in a blanket fort snuggling with a huge pile of Care Bear plushies.  Regardless of anyone’s orientation, I just think it’s awesome to have everyone being free to be who they are and loving everyone, and that lines up perfectly with Care Bears. It does help that I enjoy the song (it’s in line with the kind of music I like), and I love the video as a whole, not just the Care Bear parts.  

It dos have some somewhat suggestive things in it, which I usually don’t focus on in my family friendly blog.  But, I think they’re subtle enough that it’s not overtly distasteful.   So overall I love this!  It made me really happy to find it!

i spent my entire 13 year of life listening to youth, by troye sivan, EVERY SINGLE DAY and now it's the most nostalgic and joyful thing in the world for me. i'm listening to it and remembering colors, textures, smells, specific moments...oh my god.
