this being hinata's response to the bathroom encounter is insane to me, like it's a joke I shouldn't read into it, obvi hinata knows kageyama didn't cry and wouldn't ask this if he did but like I think it kinda shows that he's aware that even though kageyama was p chill on the outside that there's some heavy history between him and kindaichi

thinking so so hard about vivienne's defensive reactions to dorian and cassandra trying (and failing) to comfort her over bastien's passing. chewing on it. thinking about her inability to talk about bastien, even to an inquisitor when the player tries to talk to her about him.
and then her banter with blackwall, who is one of the companions she has a mostly negative dynamic with, yet it is him and not dorian or cassandra that she responds kindly to.
Tumblr media
blackwall doesn't dance around it or try to lessen the blow of bringing it up like dorian and cassandra do, and i think she appreciates that directness. she still doesn't open herself up to him, though. she is so,,, agh

PSYCHOANALYSIS ON CHARACTER PASTS IN WRECK IT RALPH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!
ok... so you know how some characters were never given a backstory to play off of? (like Turbo for example)
i dont know for certain the psychological impact that not having a past could have on video game characters (or if they would even care), but what i do know is that it is objectively damaging to not have anything that came beforehand to work with.
imagine being tossed into a world, have whatever code implanted into your brain tell you specifically what you need to do, not have any choice in the matter, and then be forced to go from there. whether or not the individual believes they need a past is irrelevant; they lack one, regardless.
Tumblr media
the psychological differences between video game characters with a past and those without come into question... are those who have a solidified memory of who they were before more or less susceptible to growth over time? or are they both intrinsically equal? maybe it depends on who it is, what game theyre from. some could thrive off of the idea of not being latched onto a past that was chosen for them, while others could long for at least some semblance of an in-between.
all things considered, it would be significantly more difficult to have a broad understanding of emotions when you aren't granted access to the same grace that those with a "before" may have. without any memories, you'd have to rely on your external surroundings to achieve any kind of development; a noticeable contrast to those who already have at least some internal understanding of themselves that came with their programming.
characters who begin their life with a clean slate may be bound to being more actively involved with the world around them because it's how they have to learn. if they don't, they're going to get stuck in the same mindset for an indiscernible amount of time until some kind of external force pulls them out of it. they don't have knowledge of their initial life; all they have is the current moment.
a big factor that correlates with all of this is the psychology of nature vs nurture. in short, "nature" is the deterministic aspect of genetics (or in this case, code) influencing who one may be, while "nurture" is how one's development is influenced by the role that one's surroundings might play. in humans, we experience both of these; they go hand-in-hand. in the WiR universe, however, it's not always guaranteed that a character will have a chance at having both at once.
those with a past get both nature and nurture, bundled into one package. however, those without are only presented with nurture, tossed into a world and expected to move on from there (maybe with a faint sprinkle of nature, but not anything that goes beyond an implication of what their life was like before spawning in). they have limited options compared to the ones who don't have to start off on a blank slate.
something else to keep in mind is how without the presence of a past, there will be far more variations between the same character across different locations. without any code telling them who they used to be, they will learn about who they are through their environment and go from there. of course, no single character will be the exact same, but code largely determines the mindset of a character and how they process the world around them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in Turbo's case, i personally think it wouldn't matter a whole lot to him because of its irrelevance to his main concerns, but it undeniably had a strong hold over his behavioral development as an individual; he is very immature. he had no foundation to start off with... well, other than the message that was branded into his mind, dictating every decision that he has ever made: he has to win.
he acted like a child when he first came around because, in a sense, he was one (not literally HAHA, i think of him as in his late 30s). his game was plugged in for about five years before he had the biggest tantrum of his life, and keeping in mind how game characters are technically immortal until the moment they're unplugged (unless they die in another game before then), this really wasn't that much time in the grand scheme of things. it was hardly anything at all.
without a healthy outlet to process his feelings, coupled with an unnerving lack of life experience beforehand, of course he'd lash out a lot! of course he'd be overwhelmed by his own emotions to the point of not knowing what to do with himself!
that doesn't excuse his behavior at all, as he did have opportunities to change for the better or learn from his mistakes, but he chose not to. he was too stubborn for his own good.
maybe part of the reason he's so hellbent on being the best is not only because it's lodged into his code to feel that way, but also because it would feel like betraying what little personality he was coded with to go against it. yes, he's never been too keen on the idea of having anything or anyone tell him what to do, but consider this: he's clinging to his own identity, protecting what small fragments he was given and holding onto them for dear life. he doesnt have a past; he has goals, and losing said goals would be losing himself and the footing he has on his own identity. he's defined by succeeding, and he refuses to let this go. this is more headcanon-territory but it is fun to explore concepts like these!!! bro is internally empty.......
Tumblr media
Felix has a past, yes, but it's vague and uncertain. he had a father, but does he even know what the man looked like? who he was beyond a name and an heirloom?
notice how it took thirty years for the handyman to shift his perspective on who Ralph was as a person. this could likely both be a product of the nicelanders and himself all being programmed with the belief that "Ralph is a bad guy," thus internalizing it, combined with the external influence and pressure Felix upheld being the good guy. (EDIT (LOL!!!!!): i know felix doesnt hate ralph but constantly being surrounded by everyones fear of him would have at least made him cautious about interacting with him)
his younger years have no hold on how he makes decisions, especially considering how absent said years are. his code only hints at the idea of a father, alongside the foundational belief that he is good.
his lack of a clear upbringing contributed even more to his sheltered persona, oblivious to the hardships that everyone else might face. combine this with how every NPC he surrounded himself with never dared to criticize him, he was prone to experience stunted empathetic development. he was never a bad guy by any means, but his lack of exposure to difficult situations did not fare well for his psyche.
that isn't to say he hadn't ever been in any difficult situations before. the roadblasters incident absolutely shook him to his core and likely cut deep into him, as he hadn't ever experienced anything similar to it before. without a fleshed-out past, he didn't have a bright idea of what hardships might linger just beneath the surface.
to his credit, he has changed for the better, now having more awareness of how others feel and function outside of himself. he makes sure to treat everyone with equal amounts of dignity, regardless of any preconceived notions he might have. :-]
Tumblr media
when it comes to Calhoun, her experiences shape her significantly, directly being the cause of her hypervigilant and instinctual nature. it can't be ignored that she suffers from PTSD due to how her character's life was mapped. this demonstrates that having knowledge of who one was before isn't always necessarily a wholly good thing. not to say that her condition makes her broken in any way! it just brings difficulty into her life that wouldn't have been present otherwise.
there is some goodness that can be brought to the surface from this; just as it isn't completely good, it isn't completely bad, either. on the opposite end of the coin, she knows how to keep herself and others safe. if it weren't for her predetermined past, she'd potentially face more struggles on the battlefield.
not only that, but it helps us, as the audience, empathize with her character, along with Felix. we learn that she isn't simply intense and nothing beyond that; she's just been through a lot. on top of all of this, she is very emotionally mature and understands how to push through horrific situations, especially when necessary. it is her job to do so, after all!
Calhoun's heavy experiences may be part of her character's mold, but they do not define who she is. a past only steers a character in an approximate direction; it does not 100% determine how they grow from there. we directly see evidence of this when she moves forward and marries Felix :-]
Tumblr media
and then there's Vanellope :-] she did have a past, but it was ripped away from her. how does she cope with this? by defining herself and becoming her own person, unrestricted by her code. she didn't start off as a princess, she started off as Vanellope.
even when she had the chance to reclaim her status as princess, she didn't, instead choosing to stick with the version of herself that she passionately created. there's a great chance that she wouldn't be the silly little booger we all know and love if it weren't for her time to think about who she was and who she wanted to be; the omission of her past was a significant contributor in how she now presents herself, unconfined to how she is apparently "supposed" to be. she has more room to choose for herself.
she doesn't let anyone else tell her who she is, holding her handcrafted identity with pride. her eccentricity is nowhere near a flaw, making itself known as a strength. her perspective of the world is unique to her and allows her to emotionally connect on a deep level with Ralph.
one doesn't need to be tied to a past to be a person. it doesnt put any more or less weight on anyone's worth, and we see this as clear as day with her character! starting off with nothing, she grew into her own skin and found her sense of self all by herself without the guidance of anyone else. i am so proud of her. i love my baby ok
Tumblr media
above all else, having a past isn't a surefire way to predict how one may develop; it is only an aspect of who someone is. an important aspect, yes, but there are many other things to consider in the sea of personalities and experiences...
the biggest difference between having one and lacking one is ultimately how an individual character might go about how they change over time and how long said progression might take. the past is only a starting point; a pre-written map without a marked destination created in order to provide a basic concept of who exactly one was earlier on. being left without one leaves some with a need for more effort to figure life out, and this distinction will affect everyone in many different ways. at the end of the day, though, a map is just a map. the road itself is what matters most šŸ‘

S5 opener REAL
#byler#will byers#stranger things#every season besides s4-5 opens with non main characters#for el we got a flashback of the lab followed by her perspective in the scene directly after#and I think for Will we will see something similar#with us getting the flashback of him in castle byers in the UD#followed by him in the present in the scene after#but what exactly would warrant that memory being brought up in association with Will in the present?#mayhaps his connection to the mindflayer and the UD run deeper than we realizeā€¦#itā€™s likely not something he could just rid himself of in s2 and now heā€™s all good#he literally still feels a connection to everything he is feeling#that means he is still technically at risk of being the spy in some capacity#the massacre at Hawkins lab also was a guiding force for El discovering the ā€˜truthā€™ in s4#so itā€™s likely for Will this instance will operate in a way that re-contextualizes the events in the past up to now#like that time Will suggested they go to the hospital in s3 only for the flayed to be waiting for them#or how flayed Billy knew they were at the cabinā€¦#all while Will was looking cryptic as hell in that scene watching over el#or the fact that he picked Billy in the first place the season after he focused on Willā€¦#you know.. williams#I think the easiest way to introduce the castle Byers flashback is a dream honestly#specifically a dream within a dream#seeing that recent leak and Will looking like either he has a black or hasnā€™t slept in days#is giving very much ā€˜I am afraid to sleep bc Iā€™m scared of what will happenā€™#I think dude is not exactly possessed in the sense that we already saw in s2 with like the particicles#but heā€™s still vulnerable#the door is still ajarā€¦#no but fr this idea of opening a door in your mind was so blatant in st2 AND s3b of teen wolf#I think a big part of it will be guilting Will over the fact that Will has helped him before without Will telling the others#hence his weird vibe in s3ā€¦ like heā€™s already successfully fucked with Will post s2 potentially with us being none the wiser aka here we go

the kindaichi/kunimi/kageyama/hinata dynamic is still one of my absolute favorite, most compelling dynamics in the entire show, like I could live in their post-practice match confrontation forever
ive most definitely said this before but imagine being kindaichi and witnessing how much kageyama caters to hinata lmao. I do not blame this kid at all for like the sheer dumbfoundedness and indignation because to him, it must've seriously looked like kageyama had some kind of personality implant

Based on Bridon Ep 4, Iā€™m starting to wonder more about how Lu Guangā€™s powers work
He took a photo of CXS and was apparently able to keep an eye on him through that
But doesnā€™t that raise some questions about the ā€œ12 hours into the futureā€ that LG can see? He took the photo so wouldnā€™t it make more sense that he could see 12 hours into the photographerā€™s future? It would explain why he followed CXS to the pub rather than watch from the hotel room, but somehow it also looked like he was able to know exactly what CXS was doing in the pub so he knew the exact moment to call and summon him back
Is he just able to zoom in on the particulars as long as heā€™s physically present in/within some short radius of the location?

just all of this from moa regarding frank/hazel/leo. the most uncomfortable romantic tension ever because nobody understands it and nobody involved wants it to be there
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
especially "Hazel's eyes glittered like gold. 'Gold is easy,' she said. It didn't seem that way to Leo--not when he looked at her." like we can interpret this in a few ways. what an interesting thing to think about a girl you just met
and the whole "if this is a private special thing that she's only done with her boyfriend then I either really don't want to try it or I really really do want to try it" like STOP cut the cameras
#also he's only riding with one arm around her??? on ARION?? bro relax šŸ˜#a frank pov would have been so entertaining here like god I would have loved to see exactly what their loud argument looked like#leo is explicitly attracted to hazel but his romantic feelings are explicitly ambiguous. like he really doesn't know what's going on#he clearly feels Something. but what is it. mostly infatuation imo. he's a teenage boy with feelings that he doesn't want#towards a girl who doesn't want him like that. idk it's just kind of sad and relatable if you've ever been in a similar position#(this is where I remind everyone that hazel is 14 in hoo not 13. closer to being 15 than 14 really. frank and leo are not weirdos)#I love the detail about big bro percy being protective towards hazel even tho it sucks for leo šŸ˜” poor guy#anyways this would have been more interesting if frazel were more slow-paced and didn't get together until hoh or something#like hazel is 100% off the table in this situation so the tension (and the resolution to it) feels kind of meaningless and inconsequential#frank is hazel's anchor to the present and leo represents her lingering inner conflict regarding sammy and her past#choosing between the two (present/past) would have been more thematically significant#but that doesn't really happen because she's already fully committed to frank so the choice is already made#one of the big questions you can ask about moa is ā€œok so what was the point of the whole sammy thingā€ and doing ^ something like this#would have helped imo. but everyone that isn't me hates love triangles so yk. probably I'm the only one who would have enjoyed that#or like all three of them should have kissed each other. in my head they did actually#the audience is gonna boo me for this but while I understand why leo and hazel were both weirded out by the sammy revelation#from a reader's pov I'm just like Ok but come on is it really that much weirder than being a demigod and dating your cousins#hazel levesque#frank zhang#leo valdez#pjo hoo toa#percy jackson#piper mclean#frazel#heroes of olympus#riordanverse#pjo#frazeleo#percy jackson and the olympians#hazeleo

what if you put bill cipher in an 'a christmas carol' situation. obviously he couldn't be changed in one night. would the ghosts try to haunt him yearly. would bill double-kill the ghosts to get them to leave him alone. this concept feels just stupid enough to be entertaining

in the cold spring
a/n: i'm in a writing mood recently! disclaimer: i haven't read mota or on a wing and a prayer yet so i do not know anything about jack kidd's life beside what is available on the 100th bomb group's website, so consider some details ~exaggerated for dramatic effect~. title is from ml burch's "i feel like giving you things" and this fic is about neither the cold or the spring, but it fits.
Goddamn Air Exec.Ā
Jack says goddamn Air Exec from the moment Bucky tells him that Hughlin recommended him, through two rounds of meetings with Hardingā€”call me Chickā€”and Bowmanā€”call me Red, through moving into the ops barracks, through shaking a thousand hands, and through getting a desk. Goddamn Air Exec. Goddamn Egan, goddamn Hughlin, and goddamn Air Exec.
His crew, his fort, and his dignity all because Bucky purposely flunked out of the tower. And Buck vouched for him! Goddamn Cleven and goddamn Air Exec. All of his training out the window for a desk in a corner office. He canā€™t even see the runway through the blinds, just the backroads of East Anglia and occasionally the Land Army girls and their cows. Five hundred hours of flight school for a desk in a corner office and a secretary.
ā€œA secretary?ā€ he asks as Harding points at a small station outside Jackā€™s newly-labeled office.
Chick nods. ā€œYes, Lieutenant Keene.ā€ He looks around the busy floor, eventually settling on who heā€™s searching for. ā€œThere she isā€¦ Hazel!ā€
A head pops up from the mass of moving bodies and paper and a woman quickly makes her way across the room, weaving through the crowd with practiced ease. As she approaches, sheā€™s smiling with a brightness that goes all the way to her warm, round brown eyes, hand outstretched for another yet another handshake. Goddamn Air Exec, but heā€™s less bitter about it.
ā€œJack, I assume youā€™ve met Lieutenant Keeneā€”ā€
ā€œHazel, I insist.ā€ Her grip is firm and as warm as her eyes.
They met the few times when he had to go to Buckyā€™s officeā€”his office nowā€”and she was waiting at her station outside. He remembers her as polite but busy, inoffensively curt. Not one of the staff who blathers away, overly chipper and overly interested in the reason for his visit, but also not one of the ones who snaps at him to sit and wait and then ignores him like heā€™s the reason theyā€™re losing the war. Hazelā€™s friendly and effective, a good temperament for a C.O. He wonders why sheā€™s in here and not up in the air.
ā€œGood to see you again.ā€
ā€œThank you, sir.ā€
ā€œJack, I insist.ā€
Her smile widens just so, and he has a feeling that theyā€™re going to work well together.
She turns to Chick and nods to where she came from. ā€œLast of the after actions for the 418thā€”ā€ Jack pretends that doesn't hurt to hear. He shouldā€™ve been up there with his boys. Goddamn Air Exec. ā€œā€”Iā€™ll have ā€˜em to Sheila in fifteen, and Iā€™ll be at my desk after that, in case you need anythinā€™.ā€
It takes him a moment to realize sheā€™s speaking to him, and he mumbles an ā€˜of courseā€™ at his shoes. Heā€™s a man who gets waited on now; it would take some time to get used to. She departs with another smile and heads back into the fray.
As Chick leads Jack around the rest of the space, showing him charts and maps and a million other semi-familiar faces, he remains acutely aware of Hazel. Sheā€™s speaking to a WAC as they go over some maps, marking here and there, her encouraging smile no doubt prompting stellar work from the younger girl. Heā€™s reminded of Ev, the way his friendā€™s genial countenance can turn a boring day kicking around the hard stand into a respite and a rough flight home from a mission into a night at a comedy club.
Then he misses his friendsā€”Ev, Dougie, Crosby and the man the navigator has become since getting kicked off of the Crash Wagon. He misses hearing DeMarco and Cleven bicker as they climb into their fort, that damn dog never far behind as Lemmons likes to sneak him out onto the hard stand. He misses the feeling of sitting in his seat and the controls roaring to life under his fingers as he hears his crew get ready at their guns. He misses looking out the window to see Ginny settling into her cockpit to his right, grinning like itā€™s Christmas morning and popping her gum into her headset receiver to set off Knick Knack at her navigatorā€™s seat.
He even misses Bucky and his plane-to-plane chatter, always vigilant, always watching out for his squadron, his group, and the rest of the wing. He misses the man Bucky can be in the air as opposed to the faux-apologetic fast-talker that landed Jack at a desk in the first place. Goddamn Air Exec.
But then he comes back to Hazel and the scrunch of her nose as she stretches her arms above her head with a yawn. She slumps back onto the desk sheā€™s sitting on, looking around the room curiously before meeting Jackā€™s eyes and nodding. He nods back before Chick drags him off to some new wonder.
Sheā€™s at her desk in fifteen minutes like she told him she would be and sticks her head into his office with a smile. She smiles a lot. ā€œIā€™m back. Holler if you need anything.ā€
By the time he can look up from the file heā€™s puzzling over, she breezes back to her desk and immediately busies herself at her typewriter.
He doesnā€™t know what to do with her. The other C.O.ā€™s have their secretaries do the standardā€”take memos, keep their schedules, make coffeesā€”but that seems insulting. Sheā€™s here to win a war; he wasnā€™t going to send her scrambling for sugar. On the other hand, itā€™s insulting not to utilize her, as sharp and reliable as she is. His father would find her a task and a ring, which he had with his last three secretaries. Jack had no intention of using his rank like that. Heā€™ll find something for Hazel to do. It just has to be the right thing.
And he searches for too long, it seems, because after three days of greeting her when he arrives in the morning and occasionally asking her where certain stationery was stored, she steps into his office post-lunch and plops down in the chair in front of his desk with a sigh. Her eyebrows raise and she wears a bemused smile as she folds her hands in her lap. She reminds him of Bucky for a moment.
ā€œWas it something I said?ā€
He shakes his head. Heā€™d been hoping she wouldnā€™t notice his lack of engagement, or perhaps would lean into not having much on her plate. ā€œIā€™ve never had a secretary before.ā€
ā€œMost men havenā€™t.ā€ She leans forward and starts picking at a chip in the wood of his desk. ā€œYour job is my job, too.ā€
ā€œYou seem busy enough.ā€ She does. Every time he looks out into the hall, sheā€™s up to something, whether itā€™s at her desk, in the filing cabinets along the walls behind her, or somewhere on the ops floor. She knows what sheā€™s doing; heā€™s the one whoā€™s lost.
Her mouth purses. ā€œNot for long. Iā€™ll be done with the backlog Bucky left by EOD.ā€
ā€œIā€™m sorry he left so muchā€”ā€
Her exaggerated eye roll surprises him. ā€œThatā€™s the point, Jack. Itā€™s too much work for any one man.ā€
Goddamn Air Exec.
ā€œBut thatā€™s why you got me. Weā€™re a teamā€¦ so,ā€ she raps his desk twice, ā€œput me in, Coach.ā€
He wants to say something, to have an important Air Exec order or some example for her to follow, but as he looks into her expectant face, he comes up short. He hasnā€™t eaten yet today, but heā€™d shoot himself in the foot before he ever made her go to the mess for him. She reads him like a book, which only further rankles his sense of command.
ā€œWell, whatā€™s all this?ā€ She spreads her hands over the papers in front of her.
ā€œInterrogation logs, new crew filesā€”ā€ He points at a pile Chickā€™s aide had delivered that morning. ā€œI need to get those back to Harding as soon as I sign them.ā€
ā€œSign ā€˜em now and Iā€™ll run ā€˜em over.ā€
ā€œNo.ā€ This is exactly what heā€™s been avoiding, assigning her utter tedium.Ā
She pushes the papers toward him. ā€œCā€™mon.ā€
He blinks at her before opening the file. Itā€™s some report or inventory request, or both or neither, which he has no idea why he has to sign, but heā€™ll do it because thatā€™s job along with waiting around and going to briefings and briefings about briefings. Not even a week in and he was ready to crawl out of his skin or at least out the window. Chick denied both his requests to fly so heā€™s truly stuck in this office for who knows how long. Goddamn Air Exec.
Two signatures, three, four, fiveā€”Hazel points to hidden dotted lines, flipping through the pages without a second glance, and Jack canā€™t help but feel like sheā€™s tying his shoes. That probably flew with Bucky, but it wouldnā€™t with him. They gave him the promotion because they knew he could do the job well and he agreed. This is something he could be good at. A team of subordinates was a perk of the job, expected for a man of such a station, and heā€™s grateful that folks were will to help out, but heā€™d grown up watching secretaries turn from aides to mother-wives and he doesnā€™t want that for anyone, especially a gal as nice as Hazel. Heā€™ll find something for her to do.
He signs the last page and closes the file as Hazel stands, hand outstretched. Pausing for a moment, he doesnā€™t pass it over quite yet. ā€œI donā€™t want you being my errand girl.ā€
She reaches across the desk and plucks the file from him. ā€œItā€™s my job.ā€
She turns on a graceful heel and heads out across the floor, making it to Hardingā€™s office and back before he could find it in him to stop staring at her confident, unaffronted gait. Bright laughterā€”the brightest heā€™s ever heardā€”bubbles out of her as she tucks her skirt under her thighs and takes a seat at her desk.
ā€œYou couldā€™ve signed three more reports in the time that took me. Now Iā€™m gonna have to wait for you.ā€ She tsked. ā€œWastinā€™ both our time.ā€
Sheā€™s tying his shoes again and that lights a fire under his ass for the rest of the day. He clears the files that had accumulated on his desk plus two rounds of parts inventory from the hard stand and he gets a memo off to London requesting more birds. He feels satisfied by the time he flicks off the light and gathers his jacket and coat. It sure wasnā€™t flying, but it felt like making a difference all the time. He didnā€™t know he could do that from behind a desk.
It takes some soul-searching, but he manages to light his own fire for the rest of the week. He maintains his composure through the worst of it, a long fog delay that had half his pilots climbing into the tower to beg him for clearance, a ā€˜misplacedā€™ delivery of Mae Wests that somehow ended up with the 418th before they came to ops, and another declined request to fly from Harding. Goddamn Air Exec.Ā
The job gets easier each day, especially with Hazel right outside the door. It does feel more like a team than subordination as they move around each other, trading reports and memos without having to speak. Still, sheā€™s a few steps ahead of himā€”coming through the door before he can call her to pick up a file, finding this or that form before he can realize heā€™s misplaced itā€”but heā€™s determined to catch up. He comes in early on Saturday and has the summarized after action reports in Chickā€™s office before Hazelā€™s arrived for the day. Itā€™s a good feeling when her eyes go wide in surprise and her cheery mouth finds its usual smile.
ā€œWell, I suppose weā€™re even now.ā€
ā€œNo,ā€ he shakes his head, ā€œnot even close.ā€
If theyā€™re really going to be a team, heā€™s going to even the playing field. No more having her play governess. Neither of them are here to clean up after someone else.
That evening, Hazel is leaning into Chickā€™s doorway as Jack leaves for the day, chatting with Sheila.Ā
He mumbles a ā€˜pardon meā€™ as he passes and her face lifts at the sight of him. ā€œMajor Kidd! We were just talkinā€™ about you.ā€
ā€œYou were?ā€ he asks as they fall into lockstep on their way out.Ā
ā€œWe were sayinā€™ how nice it is to have an Air Exec who knows what heā€™s doinā€™.ā€
ā€œBucky tried his best.ā€ Heā€™s lying.
She knows it and she snorts. ā€œHe was fun to have around, certainly.ā€
Itā€™s quiet as they walk. The flights have stopped for the day and if he strains his ears heā€™d be able to hear the crews working away on the hard stand, but thereā€™s no need for that now. Thatā€™s another thing heā€™s learningā€”when heā€™s doing the job and when heā€™s not. With the warm evening air and the blazing sunset in front of them, heā€™s grateful for the time off the clock.
He looks at Hazel and is struck by the sight. The light washes her dark cherrywood skin in a velvet glow, sending shadows of her lashes and her nose across her face. Heā€™s suddenly jealous of Bucky and he doesn't know why. She catches his eye and smiles. Blanching, he clears his throat and stares at the ground. His boots are the cleanest theyā€™ve been since heā€™s been in England now that heā€™s out of the grease and dust of the planes. Goddamn Air Exec.
Theyā€™re nearly at the ops barracks when he realizes that he doesnā€™t know where sheā€™s going. Does she live in the barracks? Is she one of the girls whoā€™s at a billet in town? Why doesnā€™t he know? Shouldnā€™t he know? Sheā€™s never in the mess and is so rarely at the Silver Wings. He wonders what she does with her time. He realizes he doesnā€™t know much about her at all, not her hometown, her family, where she was before the Air Force. The Oberlin pennant on the wall in his office had prompted her to ask into his life, but thatā€™s because sheā€™s always where he is, but heā€™s never where she is. He wants to be.
ā€œWhereā€™re you headed?ā€
She comes to a stop. ā€œHome.ā€
ā€œWhereā€™s that?ā€
Her wry smile makes his heart skip a beat as she turns down the path leading toward the enlisted barracks. ā€œGood evening, Major.ā€ She never calls him that.
ā€œSome of usā€™ll be at the pub tonightā€”Chick, Red, Buckyā€¦ itā€™d be good to see you.ā€ He takes a half-step toward her so as not to yell the offer, maybe sheā€™ll take it if heā€™s gentle. Part of him hopes sheā€™ll say yes. He wants time with her outside of keeping the group on its feet, just an hour to hear her laugh, to ask her where she gets that charming accent from, to ask her for a dance. Part of him hopes sheā€™ll give him one more good smile and walk away, that sheā€™ll remind him there are rules, lines to be maintained. Heā€™s not going to become his father.
ā€œGood evening,ā€ she repeats and he watches her go. He doesnā€™t have time to dwell on the ache in his chest as Cros yells at him from across the way. Heā€™ll have his night and sheā€™ll have hers.
Heā€™s not sure if he should apologize for being out of turn when he sees her next, clear the air and make it clear that heā€™s notā€¦ he isnā€™t going to be that man. He reasons to himself that wants to know her as a teammate, in the same way heā€™d come to know the members of his crew. Itā€™s what any good leader does. Thereā€™s a short speech ready to go when he enters HQ Monday morning after seeing the forts off.
She greets him as politely as she always has, but he gets the feeling he probably wouldnā€™t be able to tell if sheā€™s upset. Her cards are meticulously close to her chest while she learns about the people around her. Itā€™d be a good quality in a C.O. He thinks of all the women heā€™d just sent to Norwayā€”Ginny, Vera, Amelie, Suzanne. Hazel would fit right in.
Thereā€™s a small box on his desk, no sender address upon investigation. ā€œHazel?ā€
ā€œYeah?ā€ she asks as she gets up from her desk.
ā€œDo you know who this is from?ā€ Heā€™s popping open one end with his letter opener.
ā€œOh, well,ā€ she starts, folding her arms and leaning against the doorframe, ā€œitā€™s from my mommaā€ Her inflection is that of an embarrassed and entertained daughter.Ā
A swath of white silk flutters to the floor and he picks it up. Itā€™s a scarf decorated with rows of small and large flowers. Fromā€¦ from her mother?
ā€œIā€”I, uh, I wrote her about you and she insisted on sending it. Bucky got one, too, when he started.ā€
He couldnā€™t recall Bucky ever wearing a scarf. ā€œWhatā€™d he do with it?ā€
She scoffs. ā€œGod knows. I donā€™t think he remembers getting it. It was one of hisā€¦ one of his mornings.ā€
ā€œHungover?ā€
ā€œStill drunk.ā€
Closing distance, she takes the scarf from him gently and tosses it around his shoulders. Sheā€™s so near now as she starts tying it and he can look at her while she concentrates, her eyes glittering with that hope that never seems to fade. Does her mother have the same eyes? The same round apples of her cheeks, the lovely point of her chin? And her perfume, the faint hint of roses he occasionally gets during the day now in full force as she works. He feels flush and he doesnā€™t know what to do with his hands or where to put his eyes or what to say. A woman whoā€™d only heard about him in letters sent her daughter to war and is sending him beautiful scarves. Thatā€™s the kind of woman who would raise Hazel.
ā€œI always tell her that this is unnecessary, that yā€™all have mommas of your own to fuss over ya,ā€ she says as she adjusts the knot at his neck and smoothes her hands over his shoulders.
ā€œIā€”I donā€™t,ā€ he stammers out.Ā
Her eyes widen and he hates the kick in his chest. ā€œOh, Iā€™mā€”Iā€™m so sorry, Jack, I had no idea.ā€
He waves her off but canā€™t quite find the words. Thereā€™s a yearning suddenly, one he left in the dark years ago, and he doesnā€™t know whatā€™ll come out if he tries to name it. Hazel puts a comforting hand on his arm and looks at him sympathetically. ā€œWell, Iā€™ll tell my momma to keep sending scarvesā€¦ only ifā€”if you wouldnā€™t mind.ā€
ā€œI could use a few more of these,ā€ he says, glancing down at the knot at his neck. He probably looks ridiculous wearing it without the rest of his flight gear, but the accomplished smile on Hazelā€™s face is worth it. Heā€™ll bear all the stares in the world if it keeps her smiling.Ā
She gives him one more once over before returning to her desk. ā€œItā€™s a good color on you.ā€
ā€œMatches my eyes?ā€
ā€œSomething like that.ā€ She winks.Ā
His stomach flips; he thinks of his father and three weddings.Ā
ā€œOh,ā€ she calls, ā€œyou can keep it on.ā€
He raises an interested eyebrow.
ā€œThe Telergma mission, youā€™re going. Chick sent authorization this morning.ā€
Three days later, Evā€™s the only one who comments on Jackā€™s new gear after they finally get the all-clear for engine start.
ā€œThat from Franny?ā€ his co-pilot asks. Itā€™s a good guess; his sister would send something like it.Ā
ā€œLieutenant Keeneā€™s mother sent it.ā€
Ev scoffs with a shake of his head. ā€œYour secretaryā€™s mother is sending you scarves? Goddamn Air Exec.ā€
Yeah, Jack thinks, smirking out the window and sitting a little taller. Goddamn Air Exec.

SL Rag spoilers below
just another Haein ramble post don mind me.
Look man I love Haein as much as the next person but I feel like, even with the new content of her coming out (from SL Rag to Arise to the anime) she's still lacking in something of her character. And, as I began to look more into her I kinda saw that the main culprit of her characterization is that: She is perfect.
Too perfect, I mean she holds no flaws or anything that can set her aside from the rest (and no being an s rank and female doesn't automatically make her different), and even if she does she doesnt hold them to the extent that other characters might have them, or she just has the same thoughts as anyone else. Her personality as well never clashes with the other hunters or is too different, especially from Jinwoo-- and okay yeah that's expected bc trophy wife trope and all thatā€“Ā  and in a sense I think this might derive from the fact that everyone wants her to still be stuck into this mold of ā€œperfect wife + perfect motherā€ that doesn't have the same level of flaws as the rest.Ā
She wants a comfortable life, like Jinwoo, she trains constantly, like Chiyeol, she is not burdened by trauma unlike Juhee who leaves the story or Jinah who actively tries to stop his brother at one point from entering dungeons (and stopping the MC? Clashing due to real life precautions and worries? And expanding on that? No sir we don't do that). She is strong but not too strong to be a threat (in their first meeting maybe but then Jinwoo just levels up in the castle and then bam stronger than her again) just likeā€¦ yeah everyone else lol. She fights Jinwoo at one point but it's not due to some difference in thinking or to stop him from something, rather Haein just wants to spend time with him. And yeah despite wanting a comfortable life, or so told so far, she is still placed in the spotlight during her idol years, and has to deal with the most supernatural shit going on in her life constantly. She might be strong but she is still a damsel in distress, and her olympic backgroundā€¦ I mean it's there.
I like the implication that she might have been stressed about appearing perfect during her idol life, especially pressured to do great by the adults around her just as she was pressured to be a maintainer of peace when she was an S rank (friendā€™s death and all), but thatā€¦ doesn't get anywhere, and I admit Haein hinted to being stressed was only in the date scene with Jinwoo, the rest was expanded by Arise and Rag, still, still its not treated as anything else except ā€˜oh she is so camery shyā€™ and ā€˜oh she just wants a normal life being a normal wifeā€™ (mind you Jinwoo is there as well but he even he doesn't see a problem with that except for when the cameras are pointed at him to which he just makes all the photos look black) and not, idk, dwell on the amount of pressure she would have been faced in since she was a child, the failure of not meeting those expectations in her past life and wishing to meet them when she was given the chance to become an s rank hunter, or how all of that constant training might have affected her life and social ties with other children who werent as talented as her. Or maybe how Haein has had to constantly keep people at a distance due to her nose problems, plus her almost never appearing in the news (so it was said during her hunter years, bc she had signed a contract with Jongin for this to not happen i think) leading everyone to not get to know her as well as the rest of the other hunters who were practically seen as celebrities.
No? None of that? Not even tackling the fact that olympic athletes tend to suffer from burnout, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, or how traumatic the double dungeon must have been since it was the first time Haein, an S rank, had ever come so close to dying (as far as we know in the og sl), and it cant be backed away with saying ā€˜oh that would be too complex for the story!ā€™ when weā€™ve seen Haein trying to challenge her fears against Beru during the Ahjin guild arc.Ā
It's also not needed for her to be so overly complex either, I was listing examples out of the many routes in which her story could be fleshed out more. She can have a small healing moment to herself or slowly unwrap the tolls of pressure sheā€™s been under, and that would be enough, because tbh, she does deserve some time to breathe, as a character, as herself. For the most part sheā€™s never alone, in every scene we see other she either is with someone (mostly a guy) or thinking about someone (90% Jinwoo), so seeing her outside of anyoneā€™s interaction, seeing her go on about her daily life or her daily struggles, or seeing how Haein fixes her own situations without the reliance on others, that I think, would be more needed than ā€˜just more Haein scenesā€™Ā
Arise has one scene which I like, her talking with Chiyeol after his double dungeon incident. Both characters definitely needed something like that in my part, 1) because it highlights Chiyeols maturity over the certain years he has been as a hunter, and 2) because it emphasizes Haeinā€™s relationship with her teacher and how sheā€™s not only learning to be skilled but also the pain that comes with losing your comrades afterwards.
And in Rag, though I find it way too absurd to the point that its funny that Haein has managed to protect an entire village, on her own, for the past 5 years, with daggers, in her 40s, no experience whatsoever in a fight unless it was also transferred alongside her memories, and also had no qualms in protecting the race of beasts that had once pose such a level of danger Jinwoo himself rewinded time itselfā€” I do like her interactions with Sirka,Ā  and it posses such an interesting dynamic to see considering she is one of the few humans who has managed to maintain a connection and lived alongside intelligent magic beasts like he elves (Suho being the other which isā€¦ interesting actually when you think about it considering Jinwoo is somewhat yes and not on the list).Ā
Again, she is so interesting in her own right, but the thing is that we never see her act alone or be solely in the spotlight, and don't get me wrong, this also goes from the other characters too. But with her I feel like too much of what she could be or experienced is brushed off too quickly or not given enough time to expand.Ā
So anyways, I will like to see where she might go off from here foward, especially in rag, and the anime.
