the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again

The world exists in such a baffling state of simultaneous sex-aversion and sex-hegemony. Every social platform on the internet is trying to banish sex workers to the shadow realm but I can't post a tweet without at least two bots replying P U S S Y I N B I O. People are self-censoring sex to seggs and $3× but every other ad you see is still filled with half-naked women. Rightwingers want queer people arrested for so much as existing in the same postal code as a child and are also drumming up a moral panic about how teenage boys aren't getting laid enough. I feel like I'm losing my mind.

The first time I ever shipped characters, I got tore a new one because it was lesbian and “they’re just friends”. Fk that, I can ship who I want and it’s better than the non-ship the writers keep saying they’ll do but never actually commit to. Plus girls are great as I absolutely will project onto characters I like.

But another thing is like, did we read the same story with same characters? Cause sure there’s how they act, but there’s also a why behind their characterization.

If you show me traumatized girl who’s been neglected and abused her whole life and adverse to physical contact, and then show me that girl willingly hugging their best friend who has their own traumas but also makes her tea and is the only person she has who loves and she can trust, and if you show me her sitting on the couch holding hands with them while she stares deeply into her eyes as they assure her that she’s not the monster she’s afraid she might be and that everything will be okay, then yeah I’m reading into that.

Hugs and handholding and assurance, and any kind of affection, isn’t something inherently romantic. I’m writing two characters who are in fact just friends and they do all that and also kiss one time because they love each other, just platonically. And I don’t read into it because I wrote them so I don’t need to, but also because the context of their relationship. I wouldn’t fault someone for shipping them or just reading into it, they kiss after all. The point is that the more you contextualize a relationship that drives the characters closer and you know the characters aren’t aromantic, its easier see affection as romantic. Remove half the context and yeah I can see them as gals being pals, but with context I have to be convinced.

“ Tim is entitled and doesn’t think about people when seeking results, and often acts uncaring” yeah it’s a character flaw.

“Damian is rude and bratty” yeah, it’s a character flaw.

Also, some people may not even regard everything listed above as flaws.

Having negative traits allows incredible flexibility within your characters, what makes them intriguing, what makes them easy to relate to. If you want to write people, then write people. But they can’t be good and clean all the time.

one of my favourite little things about the murderbot diaries is how present all secunit's friends are even if they're not actually physically present. it doesn't do the annoying thing where it jumps through hoops to bring back characters that aren't really relevant to the narrative but it also doesn't do the other annoying thing where it pretends they never existed either. like secunit talks about art and mensah all the time even when art or mensah aren't in the book. it's clear how bharadwaj has impacted its personal growth even when she's literally on another planet. it complains about gurathin and pin-lee when they're not there. it's still sad about miki and don abene and it mentions tapan and maro and rami even though it only knew them for a few days (because when you're new at being a person every interaction with other people is important even if it's short). iris reminds it of mensah. iris also reminds it of ratthi. its hair is fluffy bc it let amena play hairdresser off-screen and it messages her so she knows it's okay. it doesn't have to worry about protecting volescu anymore because volescu retired thank goodness. it's still using thiago's language module. etc etc etc

it's such good writing because it's such a little thing that gives the characterization and relationships greater depth and also reinforces the running theme of friendship in the series and then also subtly gives this sense of 'the people you love are a part of you/your story' and also reinforces secunit's role as a storyteller because it's constantly telling little stories about all its friends.

I fear that "fire bending didn't come easy to zuko" and "zuko isn't a prodigy" (both true) has somehow snowballed into "zuko is a bad or at best average fire bender".... which simply isn't true, especially by the end of book 3
