Apologies for the delay. Appreciate you all!
ALEXIA POV
Everything faded around her. She couldn’t see anything but Ridley’s limp body lying several metres away. She didn’t care about a gun. About the security fighting the man into restraint. Into Blau crying out, or Lucy yelling.
There was only her.
She felt herself moving, scrambling over anything and everything to get to her.
Please no. Please. Please!
Her vision blurred with tears.
Please. Anyone but Ridley. I can’t-
Ridley had collapsed face down, the bloodied side of her face hidden against the floor, though the amount of blood was confronting.
“Lee? R…Ridley?” She managed to stutter out as she arrived at her. She patted over her still warm back as if to wake her. Ridley didn’t so much as flinch. The tears were falling in streams now. She slid her hand up her back like she had the night before, her fingers tangling themselves into the soft hair at the nape of her neck. The hair that was getting too long. Alexia knew it’d been annoying her, and was going to insist after the event that she cut it for her.
“Please no..” she sobbed, leaning down to press her lips to her exposed cheek. There were more gunshots. More shouting. Loud, banging noises. She ignored them all. “Lee, please wake up. I need you.” She cried against her soft skin, and then even quieter she made her admission. “I can’t live in a world without you in it.”
“Lucy!” Blau yelled through the haze of grief.
Two strong arms wrapped around Alexia and dragged her back against her will. Away from Ridley. She fought against the arms, shooting her hands and elbows back and hearing a grunt. She protested in a scream as she watched Ridley getting further away from her.
She felt the person holding her hit the wall, but hold on strong. She hadn’t taken her eyes off her, just waiting for the slightest form of movement… anything. Anything at all. And suddenly a figure stepped across to block her view. He crouched down directly in front of her, studying her face with hatred in his eyes. She watched his mouth move and as he spoke an unrecognisable language. His eyes flickered to Blau and back, his finger pointing them both out to the four others.
She had no doubt in her mind who this was.
But, given the circumstances, she couldn’t seem to care.
Instead, she found herself staring through Bashir, trying to see the body of her girlfriend.
RIDLEY POV
Ridley sucked the sweetness from the pineapple while she waited for the English and Spanish games to download. She knew Alexia had been thinking about them, though she’d never complain, and Ridley was excited to see her reaction when she brought it to her.
Alexia’s smile could light up the world.
“He’s smarter than his father.” Duce said, snapping her from her thoughts.
“You don’t think he’ll take the bait?”
“It is very well-hidden bait,” she murmured. “I think it’s 50/50. We don’t know enough about him. From what I do know, there’s a chance he does something else entirely.”
“Like attack us before.” Ridley said, echoing the thoughts of the group.
“That’s an option. Otherwise he’ll watch from afar to see if it’s bait, and get us as we exit.” Fuzzy suggested.
“Or go for Alexia.” Becks murmured quietly. Ridley twitched.
“It’s not unrealistic.” Duce supported. “By now he’s realised that you’re keeping her safe. That means she’s the most important person in your life.”
“Blue-”
“Blue isn’t the one you’ve flown to hide away. In reality, he’ll want Blue and Alexia in the same place. Limit exposure.”
Silence while they thought.
“So,” Wombat said, serious for once, “it’s just a matter of – will he go after Ridley, or after them?”
Ridley landed as the sun was just rising high enough to clear the cliffs. She taxied in, her heart calming at the sight on Alexia and Chiquito waiting for her on the shore, kicking around her football.
She quickly hooked up to the buoy and drove the dinghy across to land. A football flew at her just as she’d dragged it up, and she’d managed a nice touch, kicking it straight back.
Still thinking about her conversation with the team, she walked over, took Alexia by the waist and kissed her as if it were the last time.
JORDAN POV
Jordan gripped tightly onto Leah’s shirt. Even with Leah’s back pressed up against Jordan’s front, her arms extended to physically protect her, she didn’t feel safe. One bullet would tear through them both.
Like it had to Ridley.
She couldn’t look at her body on the floor when it had dropped, because she hadn’t wanted to know. But Alexia’s screams were something straight from a horror film. They sent bone-chilling shivers through her body that she hadn’t been able to stop since.
She tightened her grip on Leah.
Alexia scrambled forwards amongst the chaos and landed somewhere near Ridley.
The two security guards held the man down, attempting to restrain him again.
Jordan looked everywhere but her body.
She looked over at Katie’s body in front of Caitlin’s, not dissimilar to Leah.
The Lumos workers shuddering amongst them.
One girl vomiting at the sight of Ridley.
Blue’s face turning paler than she’d ever thought possible.
The sobs as tears fell down her cheeks.
The anger in Lucy as she ripped the gun from the man’s hands.
The pain in Lucy’s eyes as she looked around, trying to find a way to control any part of the situation, from Blue’s grief, to Alexia’s.
The panic from Blue as more men entered the room, shouting.
The yelling at Lucy to grab Alexia.
The fight in Alexia towards Lucy as she dragged her away from Ridley.
She still didn’t look at her body.
Leah had pressed herself hard against Jordan’s front, in between her legs and she knew nothing would move her from that spot.
Ridley’s body.. it was so much more confronting that the others strewn around them. She could look at them. But not her. Not Blue’s family. Not Alexia’s person. But she couldn’t avoid looking at all of the evidence… the bullet had travelled upwards from the man on the floor, and so she couldn’t miss the chilling sight of Ridley’s blood sprayed onto the roof above them.
Jordan swallowed, but her mouth was dry. She held her grip tightly and turned to see Blue alone next to her, still weeping, her lips parted as her eyes flickered between Ridley, and the armed men coming toward them.
Reaching out, she held her hand.
RIDLEY POV
It was impossible to put into words just how good Alexia’s body felt against her own, their heads leaning together as they swayed. She wanted to stay in this happy bubble together forever, but that sick feeling in her stomach was still there.
Her smell.
Her touch.
Her warmth.
She was the first thing Ridley had ever done right.
Ridley felt someone staring and turned to lock eyes with Becks. He looked from her to Duce and back.
There was an update.
"What is it, little one?" She heard Lucy ask. "Is it your leg?"
Ridley turned to look at Blue up and down, assessing her discomfort.
"It's getting sore." She admitted, though she always understated. Getting sore meant she was in quite a bit of pain she refused to show. She looked around them nervously, and Ridley knew exactly what she was thinking. Of course she did. It was her baby Blue.
Before she could help, Alexia tightened her grip to allow Lucy to get there first. Ridley kissed the Spaniard’s temple in thanks.
"Come here." Lucy cooed. She gently hoisted the smaller woman up onto her and cradled her as if she were the most fragile thing in the world.
"Luce.. your knee." Blue protested, but alas, Lucy was nothing if not stubborn.
She carried her from the dance floor, trying to cover the pain in her own knee as she did so. Blue locked eyes with Ridley over her shoulder and she immediately felt herself moving towards them, only to be stopped by her gesturing otherwise.
Blue gave her that understanding smile of hers and rested her head against Lucy’s as she was carted away.
She didn’t think she’d ever get used to not being the person to take care of her.
Blue studied her face and gave Ridley a wink which she responded to with the best smile she could give her at that point.
She didn’t need a mirror to know how unconvincing it was.
“She’s okay..” Alexia murmured in reassurance.
Ridley hummed, watching them at the table as Lucy gently sat her down, and Jordan went over. “I know..” she murmured softly in response.
“We’re all okay..”
Ridley tensed at those words, because she couldn’t be sure. He could be anywhere. She scanned the room automatically, comfortable being amongst people in a public place, yet uncomfortable at the few random people in the room who were not footballers, and obviously not with anyone.
Alexia’s fingers gently began to massage the stress from her neck.
“Hey, look at me Lee.”
Ridley did so immediately, and happily. She loved to fall into those comforting hazel eyes of hers.
“I’m right here..” she whispered, waiting for Ridley to relax a little.
Only when she relaxed, did Alexia lean forward slowly and kiss her so gently, it could have been a dream.
Alexia was never one for public affection.
This was important.
The Spaniard’s fingers slid up into the hair at the nape of her neck and she shivered.
The feeling that she was slowly growing accustomed to spread throughout her body, to each and every one of her cells. She held Alexia closer as she kissed her, soft lips on soft lips, tongues brushing ever so gently against each other, just to taste.
She was consumed by her.
Ah, fuck. Alexia.
She ran the flat of her hand from her ass, over her hip, waist, breast, collarbone, neck, right up to cup her cheek and stroke her thumb across it.
Just as she reached her cheek, Alexia’s phone rang. Ridley groaned internally but from the entertained look Alexia gave her, it was obvious.
She looked at the phone and tilted her head, answering it.
“Hola, Ona.”
As soon as Alexia was with the group, Ridley left to wander over to the Becks and Duce.
She read through the intelligence, and once done, her eyes flicked up to meet Alexia’s. She was standing with the group, though her body was facing towards Ridley. That longing feeling returned.
“There’s one more piece of information you should know.” Duce said.
“What is it?” She murmured, tearing her eyes away.
“The ace up our sleeve.” Duce replied. A face flashed onto the screen and Ridley memorised it.
“This is Reynold. He’s one of ours.”
She tilted her head, looking at the codeword next to his photo. “Who chose the Beetlejuice reference?”
YFN POV
The word grief felt like an understatement. It was far, far worse than that.
She felt sick.
Empty.
Alone.
She felt like she could feel her own heart breaking into a thousand pieces.
All at once.
She struggled to breath, instead gasping as her body shook. The only thing to distract her was to protect the rest of them.
She watched Lucy grab the gun, and flinched as she did so. Had she even handled one before?
She watched Alexia scrambling towards Ridley’s body and the blood seeping from her head.
She watched her try to wake her, to get her to move. Anything at all.
Another group of men entered the room, armed, and she yelled towards Lucy.
“Lucy!”
Lucy looked to her, to the men, and then to Alexia and understood. She shoved the gun into her hoody and hurried towards the grieving Spaniard. Knowing she’d be trouble, she bear hugged her arms around her body and dragged her backwards.
YFN watched as Alexia fought, swinging and protesting, even managing to connect her elbow and nails into her at points. But Lucy was always so noble and determined.
She dragged Alexia back next to YFN and eventually her protestations dulled into lifelessness as she stared towards her unmoving body.
Even with the men yelling at them in another language, she stared straight at her.
YFN felt Jordan take her hand and she squeezed it, not knowing how good it would feel to have that.
YFN looked to Lucy and wanted to cry even more at the expression on her face. She couldn’t protect anyone. She couldn’t control anything.
She saw a little cut on her cheek from where Alexia had managed to scratch her, and wished she could reach over and wipe the blood away.
But they dare not move. Not with these men in front of them.
She blinked the never-ending tears away to try and see them better. The main figure crouched down spoke, his eyes flickering to Alexia and YFN, pointing to them both.
But he wasn’t smiling.
His eyes were dead, and his face was neutral.
This was revenge. This was Bashir.
Gunshots rang throughout the building which built some sort of hope, but he ignored them which sunk her heart. They must have been his men.
He stood and walked over to Ridley. Using his foot, he rocked her body and it did so, limply. YFN felt sick but knew better than to say anything. She looked to Lucy whose hand had come over to cover Alexia’s mouths from any protests she may have.
Bashir stood back, watching to see if she would move.
Nothing.
He struck her in the ribs, hard with his foot.
The sound of flesh on flesh and ribs breaking was disgusting.
Alexia began to fight against Lucy again and the Englishwoman whispered in her ear. “Please don’t.”
Lucy was begging. For all of them.
Alexia ignored her and managed to free her mouth and yell towards Bashir. “Don’t you fucking touch her!” She yelled in English. “You want someone to hurt? I am here!”
YFN flinched.
He stared at her, his expression remaining neutral. Did he understand English?
Surprisingly, he ignored her and gestured to the security guards and then the door. Two of his men stood and dragged the pleading security guards to the door.
As if he had known, banging sounded on the door as people tried to get through. But his men had barred it shut.
One of Bashir’s men shouted in English. “We have hostages. Do not enter or we will kill them.”
The banging stopped.
“We need confirmation of life.” Beckett’s voice.
One of the men hit his gun against the head of one of the security guards.
“Y…yes…I…. I’m alive. My n..name is Greg. I.. I work h… ere.”
“Greg, how many people are in the room?”
Greg didn’t answer. The man with the gun nudged him again.
“Uh..” He looked around the room. “D…dead or alive?”
The gun hit again.
Silence behind the door. And then: “Both.”
“Nineteen alive… eight dead.”
“How many hostages?”
“Uh..”
“We have hostages. That is all you need to know.”
The taller man, the one who’d shot Ridley stood now, grinning towards Bashir.
“I did it. I got her for you.”
Without blinking, Bashir lifted his hand and shot him in the chest, watching as fell backwards, hitting the leg of a table and gasping for breath. YFN closed her eyes as his body fell.
“She was mine.”
The man with the gun hit it against the security guard’s head again.
“E…eighteen alive.. nine dead.”
She looked at the man who’d shot Ridley as he sat leant against the table, gasping for breath. If there were an ambulance nearby, he’d surely live. And yet – she knew Bashir wanted him to suffer.
There was silence again for a period.
“I believe you have one of ours?” Beckett asked.
YFN looked to Ridley who still hadn’t moved. Bashir kicked the gun away from where she’d dropped it and shook his head towards his man by the door. When the security guard went to respond, he hit him hard in the temple and responded in his place.
“We have one of yours.”
“I’d like to speak to her.”
Bashir fired his gun towards the door, but not at it. “You will clear us a path to the roof, or we will kill the hostages one by one. You have 10 minutes.”
He looked back at Ridley, his jaw twitching, and then he turned to the group of terrified people huddled against the wall.
“She killed my father, and my men.” He said, with a strong accent. “So I will kills hers.”
He pointed Alexia out to his other two men. “I want her partner first.”
There was no way YFN would ever let the person Ridley loved to be hurt under any circumstance. She went to move and was distracted by something in the corner of her eye.
Did Ridley just move?
RIDLEY POV
Her head felt swollen. Sore. Pounding. Like a nail to the brain.
Shouting penetrated the ringing in the ears, though she couldn’t hear what it was.
Screaming.
Ridley knew better than to move. She’d been in similar situations. She knew why what had happened, happened. She would have been killed straight away if Bashir and his men had entered with just her there. They’d needed the element of surprise.
She made herself limp, trying to ignore the pain in her head.
She felt hands touching her. Tangling into the hair at the nape of her neck.
Alexia.
It was harder to suppress a shiver than it was to suppress the blinding pain.
“Please no..” she heard Alexia sob, followed by the feeling of her lips on her cheek.
More gunshots.
More shouting.
Loud, banging noises.
“Lee, please wake up. I need you.” She cried, breaking whatever heart Ridley had. “I can’t live in a world without you in it.”
Someone shouted. Blue?
The hands disappeared.
More yelling, though in Somali. She heard the heavy footsteps of men entering the room and counted them.
There were 5.
More talking, quieter now. It was Bashir’s voice.
Gunshots rang throughout the building. Her team was here.
The feel of a foot rocking her body. She remained limp.
A foot connected suddenly, and violently with her ribs. She felt the break, felt the blood pooling in the area and yet still, remained limp.
“Don’t you fucking touch her!” She heard Alexia yell in her broken English. “You want someone to hurt? I am here!”
Ridley tried to not react.
Silence.
Movement.
Two security guards protesting as they were dragged.
Banging on the door.
An exchange of words. She recognised Beck’s voice.
Becks wanted to know if she was alive, and she knew that. But there was no way for her to signal him. Instead, it was done for her.
More movement, followed by the sound of Reynold’s voice, loud enough for Becks to hear. “I did it. I got her for you.”
A pause. A gunshot.
She heard the bullet hit, and from the gasping sounds as he fell backwards, it was in his chest.
From the lack of a second bullet, she knew that Bashir couldn’t tell the difference between a bullet hitting flesh vs hitting a vest.
“She was mine.” Bashir hissed.
“E…eighteen alive.. nine dead.”
“I believe you have one of ours?” Becks asked.
The sound of her gun being kicked further away from her. Fuck.
“We have one of yours.”
“I’d like to speak to her.”
Gunshots towards the door. “You will clear us a path to the roof, or we will kill the hostages one by one. You have 10 minutes.”
Silence. And then the sound of movement behind the door.
“She killed my father, and my men.” He said, with a strong accent. “So I will kills hers.” A pause. “I want her partner first.”
Ridley’s breath hitched and she tried to suppress it. Obviously it was noticeable as Reynold created another distraction.
“Hostile times 2, two metres, 4 o’clock.” Reynold began telling her aloud. It was such a random thing, that Bashir paused to try and understand. “Bravo is mine. Split the last two.”
She heard Bashir raise his gun again. Reynold spoke again and she could hear the grin in his voice. “Look over here, boys… it's showtime!"
At the sound of the codeword, Ridley’s eyes opened just as she spun on the ground, kicking the legs of the two men out from under them. She grabbed the gun from one and shot the two standing by the door before it was knocked from her hand as a man grabbed her arm.
It was almost impossible to see with the blood running down one half of her face, and she was barely able to open her left eye, but the pain didn’t matter at that moment.
Next to her, she could see Reynold struggling against Bashir for the gun in his hand. Worried it would go off towards the group, she pulled herself against the man and kicked at their hands, the gun flying away to safety.
She managed to lock eyes with Alexia for only a split second, wide-eyed and shoving herself away from Lucy’s bear hug. An arm came around her neck and pulled her backwards, falling onto the man. The other raised a knife to get her while she was vulnerable, and Alexia slammed into him using her body, just as Ridley had taught her.
She shot a high elbow backwards and felt the man’s orbital socket give way. Spinning, she grabbed the knife from his own belt and plunged it into his chest.
Without waiting, she looked to see the other man sprawled on the floor, reaching for the knife he’d dropped when Alexia had knocked him over. Prioritising, she slammed her foot down onto his leg and as he screamed, she grabbed Alexia around the waist and picked her up, suppressing a groan for her broken ribs as she set her down where she was before. Alexia looked up, her mouth opening to protest but Ridley got there first.
“Stay, la Reina.”
She didn’t even want to know what she looked like with the blood dripping down her face.
She turned to see what remained of the two men. One was on the floor, a knife in his chest and the blood dripping from his mouth a good indicator that he was deceased. The other was now charging towards her with a knife. She managed to dodge and grab his arm, twisting it behind his back as she dropped him to the floor. She held her weight down on his body and her arm came around his neck, squeezing tightly. Face on the ground, he struggled against her to no avail.
Suddenly a sharp pain hit her outer thigh and she groaned, looking down at the knife. Rolling her eyes and swearing under her breath, she ripped it out and saw the blood begin to flow. She rocked the man under her sidewards just enough to slide the knife under before pressing his body down on top of it.
He gasped and shuddered, unable to escape until he went limp entirely.
She sat up just as one of the doors on the opposite side of the room burst down, more of Bashir’s men running towards. She watched as she approached with guns raised, yet before they reached them, her team entered and shot them down.
Her team breathed a sigh of relief when they saw her, their eyes widening at the bodies strewn around. She looked to Reynold who was standing opposite Bashir, though she was uneasy that he was so close to the group. To Blue. To Alexia. Ridley stood.
He looked at the bodies of his men around the room, then to Ridley. She didn’t need to wonder what his next move would be.
Bashir began to turn his body towards Alexia and Ridley snapped.
“Take one step towards her and I’ll break your fucking neck.”
He paused his movement, thinking.
She felt dizzy from the blood loss. She was weak. Tired. Bruised. Beaten.
Bashir also knew this. He turned back towards her. “I challenge you. You and me. I die, or you die.”
“Dumbest decision of the year.” Wombat muttered.
Her body was weak, but not enough for that. She had to think it over.
“Ridley..” Becks murmured. She turned her head, though her eyes were still on Bashir. “It’s your choice.”
He would never stop coming for her. For her loved ones. But she couldn’t agree with the unnecessary killing. The fact that she’d shed blood in front of them all. Killed in front of them. In front of Alexia. And Blue.
She gestured for her team to lower their weapons.
She took one step forward, locking onto those angry eyes of Bashir’s and murmured lowly. “You will not coerce me into an ultimatum. You want to die? That’s your choice. We are done.”
Just as she went to turn away from him, he did exactly what she’d expected and swung his knife.
“Ridley!” Alexia yelled.
Ridley ducked under his arm, snatching the knife from his hand and plunging it exactly where she was aiming. It hit with a loud thud.
A gasp of breath left his body and he stumbled backwards into one of the chairs at the table.
She crouched before him, gesturing to the knife. “I leave you with your choice. That knife is currently severing and blocking your aorta. You can live. Or you can die. But the choice is all yours.”
Before he could respond, she walked away.
ALEXIA POV
She’d been watching her from across the room since it had happened.
The authorities had arrived. People she knew held high offices. Politicians, military and such. The bodies were removed, starting with Bashir’s.
Many, many statements were taken. Photos. Injuries. Camera footage. Apologies. Explanations. A specialised team talking to the group about how to address the event in the media.
Blau managed to gain some powerful friends with what happened. And she even admitted that what happened would give Lumos a lot of publicity, though that’s not where her head was at. Most of her was trying to come to terms with everything they’d just seen.
They all were.
“It is not something anybody should ever have to see..” they were told repeatedly during the apologies.
They were offered all of the psychological help available, and she was pretty certain that it was more than just requested.
But amongst the chaos, Alexia couldn’t keep her eyes from her.
She was alive.
Ridley had been over the far side of the room in an intense debrief while her injuries were treated. Her ribs were broken. Her thigh was stitched and bandaged. Her head was also treated, stitched and bandaged until she could get proper care for it. As her shirt was removed, the military medics did seem a little startled by the amount of scars riddling her body. She lifted her arm tenderly, her torso on full display and still very much sun-kissed from their time on the island, while they bandaged her bruised ribs.
She wanted to give her space, but she also knew she needed it too. What happened had been… confronting. And not just the violence. But the feeling of having lost her. She wouldn’t wish that upon anyone. She didn’t even know if she’d be able to survive that if it had been true.
Alexia needed space to think, but she also just wanted to be close to her. To reassure her. The few times they locked eyes, she could see the shame there. The knowledge of having done such horrible things in front of her. Blau. Lucy. Everyone.
But Alexia had already understood the world she lived in. And if anything, it just made her feel even safer to see that side of her.
But amongst all of her feelings, Alexia was worried more than anything. Worried that Ridley would feel so ashamed that she’d push her away. She was terrified of that. Because after what had happened, it was clear that she couldn’t live without her.
When most of the people around her had disappeared, Alexia approached her warily, hearing her conversation as she approached.
“I am sorry again. I needed to help you before he arrived, and it was the quickest option… I’ll work on my aim a little better, huh?” Reynold chuckled, tapping her forehead.
She smiled and joked. “Very quick thinking, my friend. You saved my life by shooting me in the head.”
“Ohhh well.” He grinned as he gave an exaggerated shrug. “Looks like you owe me one.”
Ridley took his extended hand. “Thank you for your service.”
“The honour is mine. I’ll see you around, Commander.”
He turned to give Alexia a polite nod as he left, walking away from the pair.
Ridley and Alexia stood opposite each other just… looking. Not talking. She looked at the bandage on her head, the bruise on her jaw, the fatigue in those dark eyes of hers.
“Please don’t leave me...” Alexia whispered, catching her sob.
Ridley’s eyebrows came together in confusion. Her lips parted, and then closed. Her face relaxed.
“There are so many thing I have to say… so many apologies and regrets. So much shame.” She said with a voice that broke.
Slowly, and tenderly, she fell to her knees in front of Alexia. “But beyond all that - I love you, Alexia. I’m not going anywhere. I’m yours… if you’ll have me.”
She leant forwards, pressing her forehead to her abdomen, putting herself entirely at the mercy of the Spaniard.
And that’s the exact moment Alexia knew that Ridley was hers.

The Mirage advertisement DLC makes me realize that mayyyyyybe the reason AC Valhalla doesn't have a NG+ (and probably won't ever) is because they need to herd a bunch of AC Valhalla players over for some sales.
#Pre-ordering an Ubisoft game Day One in this economy#fellas may I suggest trying AC Odyssey if you haven't#game has many endings so you can NG+ 3 times and get 3 different stories#more bang for your buck#oh and Ancient Greece has many bangs too iykwim 😏#Valhalla got like what? 20 million players? that's impressive#you get to bang while waiting for a game to be 50-75% off it's a win-win#meanwhile I can play as Roshan or Kassandra in Valhalla modders ily

fic writer ask game. sorry couldn’t resist 😂😂
"Describe your writing process from scratch to finish."
Oh boy.
Well uh... usually I start off with a Random Thought that my brain catches on like a sweater sleeve on a thorn, and then I just sort of... follow the string to see where it goes.
Can I visualize conversations around it? Usually this is key for me, the way that the characters engage with each other in the moment. From there, I can get a sense of their "mental state." How would they react to certain events? What feels right? And then it continues down this little domino path until I get to the end. Where do they end up? Does it make sense?
If the story still has me after I've mentally seen it through to its conclusion, I will start to write it down. And I will typically start at the beginning... or at least what I envision to be the beginning. There is a 50/50 shot of what was the beginning becoming the middle instead (Looking at you, Chapter 16.)
I write slower than molasses. I tend to edit as I go (I shouldn't, but I do.) I read out loud to myself to make sure that it sounds right. Often, during the draft stages, it can look like a screenplay rather than a fic.
I often plateau and get deeply discouraged; I make playlists to get the images and emotions instead of the words at the forefront of my brain. This helps about 75% of the time.
I agonize over the ending, and second guess myself as to whether it sounds like it was just left off in the middle of a thought or not. (There is a chapter in LTL that I actually have to go back and adjust because originally I WAS going to continue the scene, and then didn't.) Cliffhangers are fine, but not every chapter. Mic drops are fine, but not every chapter. Did I say everything I needed to? Am I actually done? When did I last get up?
And then it goes off to beta, and back to me, and back and forth until finally we're both satisfied and I can feel confident posting it. Or at least be willing to fling it into the internet for the readers to be the judge of. Which of course means Deep Anxiety for the first week while I wait for comments haha. But yeah.
In short: Most of it is me screaming at my computer screen and battling my perfectionism, and then continue screaming over everything after I post anything hahaha. The cycle never ends. :)
OH! And rarely, I will become possessed and manage to bang something out in 2 hours, and that's how you get something like Red.
Sorry for the long and convoluted answer, but thanks for the ask!

What does $50 buy on Facebook Marketplace these days?
Hello again and Happy New Year! I hope this post finds you enjoying a prosperous baby New Year. Hopefully all good things ahead in 2019!
Okay...so I’ve been away from the old blog and WAY away from drum parts and restoration for quite a while now. I gotta admit, it gets to be a pain in the ass tracking down orphan drums, sorting parts, tearing down, cleaning, cataloging and restoring...and most of all, fielding questions and parts requests from vintage Tama drum bros from all around the world. I’ve also taken a break from selling on eBay and Craigslist because we all know what a royal pain in the ass that can be...and with increasingly diminishing returns to be had nowadays. I seriously needed to step away from the game so no one got hurt!
So back to “biness”. I always enjoy adding a few extra bucks per month to the investment account from diligent drum parts schlepping...and lately my personal finance bottom line once again came a calling. I was feeling I needed something to jump start my epic return to the old grind. Maybe a cheap kit to restore? Nope...got too many of those and my wife would murder me in my sleep..again! Most likely a decent lot of roached orphan drums to part out and/or restore and flip. Well a few days ago I found just the ticket, oddly enough...on Facebook Marketplace.
So being the bottom feeder that I am, here’s what $50 bought me...
Yeah...I thought the same thing. At first glance, no big wowy zowy right? A roached King Beat snare and some other crap.
Break it down one time!
(1) 81′ Tama King Beat snare
I was obviously into this deal for just the snare alone. This features a surprisingly complete KG parallel strainer assembly (shocker…both knobs are there!). I’ll need to remember to reassemble the complete strainer on the shell to ensure full functionality prior to scrapping the shell. Up close, overall this is not as shitty as it looks. The shorty coffin lugs (always in demand) don’t seem all that pitted nor do the PC die cast hoops. When I say “not all that pitted”, I mean typical of the era. There’s even a nice clean badge to boot. The big knob muffler is complete but the felt has disintegrated. Sure the shell is toast and is headed to an artificial reef but otherwise…parts heaven.
Cha-to-the-ching!
(1) 98′ Spitfire by Slingerland 22″ kick drum
Wait what? A Spitfire by whoesy whatsit? Yeah I sure as hell never heard of them either. Not much info on these drums as they were a part of the tail end of the sad Slingerland demise and much akin to the Chinese import “Swingstar by Tama” entry level junk of the era. The wrap is a bit bubbly on this drum and it is missing both spur sets. It’s also sporting a pair of roached, previously chrome and otherwise pedestrian Rockstar looking hoops that have been painted black. These originally came with matching wrap inlay hoops similar to the Taiwan level early 90′s Tama Rockstar hoops. Me thinks to myself…”Self…hey…I have pair of black inlay Rockstar hoops! I also have a pair of telescoping, diamond bolt pattern mount plate “Camco by Tama” (yikes!) kick spurs somewhere in the workshop that might fit the bolt pattern. Maybe I can smack this beast in the face, get it back into player’s shape and get $50 for it or donate it to the church for a tax receipt”. Win-win!
Here’s a pic from an old Guitar Center listing of what a “Spitfire by Slingerland” kit should look like. I guess it’s your basic, late 90′s, Korean firewood shell, entry level beater you’d buy for your kid at Christmas that he then stops playing a week later. Again, standard Taiwan Rockstar style matchy matchy wrap inlay hoops and typical telescoping spurs of the 90′s era. Still sporting the vintage style Slingerland lugs all around though. Hmm.
(1) Mid 60′s 13″ Ludwig Keystone badge Rack Tom with Gold Sparkle Wrap
Okay so this one is a bit out of my wheelhouse. I’m no vintage Ludwig guy by any means, but this was kind of cool to stumble upon. Sadly painted black by some doofus from days of yore…there is clearly a vintage gold sparkle wrap that lurks beneath what looks like some black house paint hot mess. This drum does have the original tom mount intact, but is missing the bottom lugs and t rods so it is about 75% complete. I believe the bottom hoop was in the lot as well. The uber-fatty re-ring shell appears to be sound, in round and the “who knows how long it was exposed” bottom bearing edge doesn’t look all the bad surprisingly. The badge is a bit roached, but this drum is worth a re-wrap and resto by some eager Ludwig aficionado that has the parts and a shit load of free time on their hands. Heading directly to an eBay near you.
* 1/10/19 UPDATE! Upon closer inspection, what I thought was thick black paint turns out to be the same shitty contact paper/vinyl that is on the timbales mentioned below! I easily peeled some off this morning and the wrap looks pretty decent underneath.
So the plot thickens on this drum...resto or no?
(2) No name 60′s era Japanese 13″ and 14″ copper over steel Timbales
Ole!
Well now these are pretty f-ing cool. Listed as “no name concert toms” in the Facebook Marketplace ad, I was pleasantly surprised that these turned out to be steel shell timbales. Hell, who knows, they may be copper. Likely not…they look 60′s Japanese, which basically means they’re one step away from scrap steel. They’ve been wrapped in a flaking, deteriorated black contact paper (same doofus maybe?), but they appear to be your classic copper plate over steel finish beneath. I guess I’ll find out when I tear them down. Can’t really tell if it is all surface rust on the inside of the shells or just copper patina that gives it that “old penny” look. The lugs to me look like the pointy Japanese Star style lug common to the 60′s Star kits and similar Japanese stencil kits of the era. Regardless, I will likely keep these as I don’t actually own a set of timbales and they’d be fun to bang on. The t rods are pretty toasty so they’ll need to be addressed. Thankfully, the clip/slide mounts are intact as is the original dual mount that I can retrofit into something period correct or even a vintage Titan stand. If the shells are too crusty on the surface to recover the copper finish, I’ll have them media blasted locally and then send them to my nephew in Vermont to powder coat with a fun finish.
Also included was an orphan but nonetheless classic Ludwig dual tom mount whose length seems to indicate it was from a stand. Then again, WTF do I know about Ludwig hardware? Regardless…more eBay fodder for the Ludwig loonies.
Okay so it is time to break down the potential flippage numbers “American Pickers - Bundle Mania!” style. I’ll keep it on the lower end of the $ scale.
King Beat snare parts:
Coffin lugs, sold in pairs @ $15 clear, assuming 4 good pairs ( I’ll keep a pair) - $60.00
KG strainer assembly, hopefully complete, the original extended snares were coiled up inside the shell and bent so I’ll keep those and try to salvage them.- $75.00
Muffler - I have broken tone control arms with good felt so I’ll fix this one, keep it and sell a good one - $50.00
PC die cast hoops - generally fetch in the neighborhood of $45.00 each - $90.00
Imperialstar badge with or without salvage grommet - $10.00
T Rods and washers - two sets of ten at $10.00 each clear - $20.00
Snare total salvage - $305.00
Slingerland Kick drum:
Parts needed are zero cost, sell or church tax receipt donation - $50.00
Kick total salvage - $50.00
Ludwig 13″ Rack tom and mount:
Sell as is or attempt to remove the black paint with citrus stripper, then sell on an eBay auction style listing starting at $25.00..maybe I’ll clear - $40.00
Tom mount is missing one L arm but in nice shape. might clear - $15.00
Ludwig total salvage - $55.00
Timbales :
I’ll keep these, will cost a bit to restore, random value at $75.00.
Timbale total salvage value - $75.00
So the total comes in at around $485.00 on a good day. Backing out my $50 cash outlay and the $75 value of the keeper timbales…with a little luck, I could potentially clear at least $350 on this lot. Not too shabby, considering the seller pretty much brought the drums to me right around the corner from where I work.
Now all I need is some free time, a whole hell of a lot elbow grease and the boundless patience for the eternal agony that is eBay and Craigslist.
Thanks for taking a look and maybe I will post a follow up on this lot. Some fun stuff in this batch for sure!
Cheers to a Happy New Year!

Packernet Podcast: Keep the Hate Coming - We're Loving It
Transcript:
8s – 1m 8s
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome, once again to the back of that podcast. I am your host and residence analyst that’s always Ryan slip check it out online packernet.com. Find me on Twitter Pack underscore that is so today. I’ve got quite a bit of things that I want to touch on some news and notes some rumors. Probably going to get a little bit Ranchi. There’s a couple different things to different people at you know, I was just talking yesterday about how you know, if I’m being honest I liked the days when the media was gushing over the Packers a lot more than I like today. I really did like that. It kind of it was it was somewhat undeserved kind of like what the Chiefs get with Mahomes and now Lamar, you know that the Golden Boy treatment that Aaron Rodgers somehow had for felt like basically his entire career up until what 2015 maybe even late cuz I think I think even as you started to decline the video
1m 8s – 1m 45s
Because you know, that’s just how they work. Nobody wants to be the first to say it and then as soon as somebody says it is like this just Avalanche. I don’t like them either. It’s just you know who can dislike him the most so, you know, that’s that’s how you get to be edgy you without actually being edgy because you didn’t want to say it for 5-10 years. Anyways, I don’t like this so much. However, I got to admit there’s something kind of nice and extra motivating about these games. You’ve already got the aspect if I really really really really really want to win and see this team in the Super Bowl is sort of like
1m 46s – 2m 46s
It hasn’t even sunk in that it’s a possibility and it’s not because I’m sure I believe thoroughly that we’re going to lose. It’s just it’s just like that that just doesn’t happen Packers don’t go to the Superbowl this certainly don’t win the Superbowl and it’s super rare and probably nod and I forget who it was and I apologize but somebody gave the visual in the Facebook group. Make sure you join the Facebook group that he could Envision Aaron Rodgers and Aries and Aries next to each other hosting the trophy and it was like one of those things that visual just made it very real and it’s like, oh my goodness this could really happen. I mean this could really actually happen but then you take the excitement of winning and the desire to win and add to it how much distain I’m developing for everybody because everybody dislikes the Packers and some of it is fine, right? You got the sports books and everything else. They’re saying the Packers have the lowest chance depending on where you look of winning a Super Bowl get it. You’ve got some stew.
2m 46s – 3m 46s
Mystic people just kind of laying out some facts, but for the most part you have very biased people that have never liked the Packers and love the fact that Aaron Rodgers is not the favorite anymore and take every opportunity. They can to remind everybody which largely is wrongly but because this is what the statistic Community now believes remind everybody that Aaron Rodgers is no longer the goat. He’s no longer even any good. He’s averaged this team is a fraud. They just can’t stop and every opportunity they get to say it they say it so that’s starting to make me angry to the point that I want them to be wrong almost as bad as I just want the Packers to win because the level of distain I have for them. Although I get it because that’s what being a fan of a different team is about. It’s still a little bit annoying. So I want to address some of that and again just some other little bit of this little bit of that. But anyways I said,
3m 46s – 4m 46s
Make sure you jump in the pack and a podcast Facebook group. That’s where the party’s at all day everyday we party and we talked about the Packers. That’s just what we do also apparently get into very serious discussions about needles in San Francisco, you know, some people tend to rant kind of like I tend to reims I can’t hate him for it. It’s it’s my life to also make sure you jump in the back of my podcast Facebook page. Thank you to all of you have sent messages. Obviously. You’ve not been getting hardly any responses. I have to go in and start working on all those responses and develop or develope responses to all the stuff you been saying to build the ultimate supercomputer. I don’t think that’s possible but it’s you know, I got all year figure this thing out. I don’t care. What else do I have to do? I pick one thing that I want to really work on this year on top of all the stuff that I’m doing and that’s one of the things I want to build. So leave me alone. What’s your New Year’s resolution push-ups get on my face. I’m building a supercomputer man Skynet Sun before the T-1000 was
4m 46s – 5m 46s
Schwarzenegger guy before the Schwarzenegger guy was the Packer. Chad Bock. You didn’t catch that and Terminator. Did you wait till Terminator 8, they’ll tell you how it all begins. If you would like to support the fact that podcast I would strongly encourage you to check out patreon.com pack underscore daddy. There is a link in the description somewhere in the link of links. You can support the show for as little as a dollar a month. It means a lot more to me than it does to you is in terms of you know, it’s more positive for me than its negative for you. I understand podcast for free, but I’m hoping that you like the value that I bring enough that you think it would be worth it to you to offer up at least a buck a month. Please consider it. I’ve had a very very good response up over $50. Which is awesome. As long as you don’t consider the fact that there are literally thousands of people that listen every day that it’s slightly less. Awesome. But still it’s good. It’s a good start and don’t forget there will be a giveaway ever.
5m 46s – 6m 29s
Single month, all you have to do is make a small donation. $1 is one entry 5 dollars is 5 entries etcetera etcetera. If you just want to win the thing straight out Super Bowl tickets are to do it. I think that’ll increase your odds substantially. So there you go something about otherwise a five-star iTunes review Stitcher review and make sure you are listening to the Packers iPod cat because the podcast broadcast on another podcast that has not called the Packers at podcast. If you don’t want to switch over that’s fine. I still get all the accounts for it. I just would like iTunes in the rest to realize that people actually do listen to my podcast. So if you wouldn’t mind subscribing to mine as well that be greatly appreciated, why don’t we take a break cuz I got a lot to talk about not a lot of time to talk about it.
6m 30s – 7m 30s
Living with chronic pain is kind of a nightmare. It’s more than just discomfort. It can affect your whole life. I know there are a lot of people listening to this podcast. And once you’re feeling better, you don’t want to just feel better sitting on the couch. You especially don’t want to just feel better out shoveling your driveway making the pain come right on back. How about instead? We spend our February and March following our favorite baseball teams to Arizona for the Cactus League spring training. I can’t imagine a better way to spend February then out in 75 degree weather watching some baseball eating a couple hot dog hanging out with your significant other your body’s your kids and after the game getting some autographs and then buzzing over to one of the great craft breweries some great outdoor scenery and Adventures like hiking biking Jeep tours hot air balloon skydiving jet ski horseback riding and then after you’re completely famished go out and get some great Arizona cuisine cuisine as Gordon Ramsay kind of says, you know the British don’t speak too good scene. They try, you know,
8m 54s – 9m 54s
Make sure you plan your spring training get away at visit arizona.com spring training. Alright so much to do so little time. What are we talkin about? How about the fact that Luke Kuechly just retired yesterday. Can you imagine being a Carolina Panthers fan? You had a good team then it all kind of went sideways. We know what that’s like, it happened last couple years, right? Suddenly things just aren’t good anymore. We were Super Bowl Contender and then we were trash quarterbacks banged up but we’re starting over now. We get this guy rule in and it’s like he’s going to take over and he’s going to transform everything and then you find out the LSU who just won the National Championship the passing game coordinator. The guy that’s worked with Joe burrow land in the rest of that LSU crew to help them to win. The national championship is going to join Rule and help us rule the NFC South took me a second there and it you just feeling good and you know it you’re probably going to get a new quarterback. Maybe you like it. Maybe you don’t but
9m 54s – 10m 54s
It’s just it’s a new era, right? Cuz it this is a good team. We just got some work to do. We got to fix up this defense a little bit. But may we got the best running back in football? We’re going to get an electrifying quarterback in here. Take a guy like Herbert would be great somebody that doesn’t really need to be benched. But as long as he has a good Supporting Cast which which the Panthers kind of do right, they’ve got wide receivers kind of for the first time that got a great running back decent enough offensive line, like you can plug him in and just make some stuff happen and it will just focus on the defense and just hammer away at it. We’re going to be good man. We got Kuechly hang a hammer in this thing ain’t turn it down in the day that you get the news. You got a new offensive coordinator. The guy that has been like the guy on your team. One of the better linebackers of all time decides that at 28 years old with two years left on his contract. He’s going to hang it up. That’s wild by the way. This is not insignificant news to the Green Bay Packers because the Green Bay Packers are playing the Carolina Panthers at home in 2020 the Panthers
10m 54s – 11m 54s
Who had a abysmally horrible defense this past year are now without Luke Kuechly now. Who knows what’s going to happen to you know, after Gronk left, obviously, there was a total speculation that he’s going to come back. Maybe this is just stay a moment, you know as far as lacking Clarity, maybe it’s it’s injury-related and he’s he’s just really worried who knows but things change Stihl 28. He still healthy maybe is not the same Luke Kuechly was last year. He said in his goodbye message. He’s just not that same guy and he doesn’t want to play if you can’t play up to that level anymore, but maybe I mean Jared Veldheer retired now, he’s back helping us win a Superbowl but as it stands the Packers now are planning to go up against the Carolina Panthers at home without Luke Kuechly. I think the sooner we get that team the bed because the new coach and all that stuff that’s going to take some time to kind of develop that team build that locker room build up the new scheme in the new system. And I you you get those teams early enough before they really
11m 54s – 12m 54s
Get into the groove if they ever do but you catch them before they get into a Groove and that’s that’s going to work to our benefit. I also wanted to comment on something in just a little bit old news, but it’s interesting apparently and this is reported via Tony Pauline. I actually was I found this while I was doing some draft homework trying to get caught up on all the latest news and rumors and things for the draft and came across some news that apparently prior to the Vikings beat in the New Orleans Saints and then understand Tony Pauline is legit. He called stefanski to the Browns like in the same article prior to in Minnesota and the Saints game. She called it but decided the Browns number one candidate was stefanski. Anyways, he had said based on an inside source. The Minnesota Vikings are kind of tired of of Zimmer now, I’m shocked by this because the outside perspective by everybody not in Minnesota is that Zimmer’s a phenomenal code? He’s done a great job obviously is Zimmer defense is a very tough defense in the defense is what makes that team great, obviously.
12m 54s – 13m 54s
Cousins did a good job and all this other stuff, but the Zimmer defense is what makes the Minnesota Vikings in Minnesota Vikings, but in Pauline’s words Zimmer has worn out his welcome in Minnesota. Here’s the interesting thing. The report was if they lose to the New Orleans Saints Zimmer’s done and stefanski will get hired as the head coach so bad because I believe the source I do think that the ownership wants to move on from Zimmer. However, they did beat New Orleans. I can’t imagine one game like that is really going to make that big of a difference. Although I mean, of course it’s a big win but to be that good of a team to get in the playoffs and to still say if you lose to a basically the number one team arguably in the NFL then you’re no good. And it’s that’s kind of a ridiculous statement. It sounds to me like something you’d say when you kind of just want him to go but the other kind of unfortunate thing is for the Vikings. Anyway, you also lost your intended replace.
13m 54s – 14m 54s
So now what are you do you you not only beat the Saints but the guy that you were going to replace dimmer with supposedly is gone. So you don’t have a replacement. No, forget that forget. The fact that I think this whole thing is a ridiculous conversation. I don’t know what’s going on inside the organization. Maybe Zimmer has become an insufferable jerk. He feels like he runs things, you know, whatever. I don’t know. I’m just telling you what the standpoint of ownership is and in for the Vikings fans listening. I want to clarify something. I understand that. The owner has said we 100% are bringing back our GM and our head coach. We have no intention of moving up. Please understand the eagle said the same thing about two of their coaches and fired them both the same day within 24 hours. I think it was like the quarterback coach something else. I don’t know but there was a question. Are you bringing it back? You should absolutely they’re coming back within 24 hours. They were both fired. So when you get put on the spot, you know, you don’t waver on a Zimmer coming back of course is come.
14m 54s – 15m 47s
Oh, yes, definitely. You tell the media. Yes, and then you go do your job or you try to throw out some it mean that there’s really just two ways to handle it. You don’t care what the media thinks and you just say yes because it’s better for your your franchise because you don’t want to waiver on it and then keep Zimmer was Zimmer, you know in the back of his mind taking these guys are trying to get rid of me. So you just say, of course, that’s our guy or the other way to handle it is just kind of, you know, not answer the question in which case everybody fully understands. You are answering the question. So you think you’re being cute but you’re answering the question and say yes, we’re trying to get rid of them by wavering on it don’t hurt her. I should have asked you to come Sizzla Floor coming back next year. What do you think the answer you think is going to be? Well, you know we go to the media asks you I think the right thing to do is say yes, of course dumb question and then if you want to fire me fire if the media wants to call you on it just to cares.
15m 47s – 16m 47s
He made you look dumb not the other way around cuz guess what you’re going to keep asking me questions as though I’m an authority and I want to keep telling me the answers that I want to give you whether they’re true or not. Cuz I could not care any less about you and your little articles. I’ve got a team to run a multi-billion-dollar franchise to run in a little Minnesota blog doesn’t mean anything to me and I’m not going to hurt my franchise answering your ridiculously dumb questions. I don’t care about you. So again, this is just to say I fully understand he said they’re they’re intending to keep them at this point. That might be their only option i d d, you know, I don’t know maybe they like some of the other candidates that are out there be enemy McDaniels. The Ravens offensive coordinator is getting a ton of love and could be a very good option. You also have to figure that. You might be looking to get a new quarterback in the near future. So maybe you want to get it off. I think that I think this is all ridiculous. I I think this is a defensive team of talk about identity in the past and the weird thing but certain teams
16m 47s – 17m 47s
This is just have identities that last through the decades the Vikings trying to go off at doesn’t work. They win when there are defensive team same is true for the Chicago Bears. They have tried over and over and over and over with guys like Trestman and everything else trying to get an elite offense and it just never works in. The one time that they’re legitimate team is when despite the fact that they’re still trying to go off ends Vic fangio building Elite defense and there you have it this Minnesota Vikings team lives and dies with their defense the purple people eaters on through the line This is a defensive franchise. They are a smash you in the mouth kind of a team and I just I don’t I don’t know. I don’t know why they would do it, but I wanted to bring it up because it is interesting and it definitely feels like this team has kind of been flogged. It’s kind of like Luke Kuechly Jumping Ship when everything’s kind of influx. Anyway, I’ve been kind of on the fence. Anyways, you’re going to fire my code. You’re getting rid of my quarterback. Probably maybe you’re bringing in all these new people. I just you know,
17m 47s – 18m 47s
The franchise is kind of in the in the in the train in the dirt. Whatever I can think of a word out of here and you know, the Vikings are kind of going through that’s enough that they’re a bad team. But you lose your offense of coordinator your defensive coordinator your assistant GM you might look at him know, you know what since we’re getting poached and we’re losing everything. I’ve been kind of want to make some changes. Anyways, let’s just kind of make some changes until I all I’m saying is if I had to guess the dimmers going to stay if for no other reason than he met that one qualification in that they beat the Saints and the replacement is currently coaching the Browns. However, keep that in the back your mind if the Vikings don’t have a good year next year. He’s 100% gone and it’s also possible that if they could find a good enough candidate they may move on. Anyways, I mean maybe before they go out and find it offensive coordinator. Maybe they go out and find somebody and offensive coordinator to coach the team and you know, there’s a lot of good defensive coordinators floating out there. They don’t get as many looks as had head coaching jobs as offensive coordinators do so. There’s some really quality guys that are just floating. So anyways something to keep an eye on.
18m 47s – 19m 47s
Something else that was brought up kind of a long that same vein Max in the Facebook group said he is a Packer fan from Minnesota and that there is growing speculation that Stefon Diggs is permanently unhappy on an overall average Vikings roster. Now though the point of his question was as a possible we end up getting them in the in the main response at he got was that there’s no way the Vikings are going to allow him to go to the Packers. That’s probably true. However, let’s also keep in mind. He doesn’t have to come to Green Bay in order for him to benefit us if the Vikings really do it again, they’re kind of in this middle grow their kind of in a spot where if they wanted to kind of tear things down they could or they can just try to hang on just replace the vacancies go into the draft get some more quality guys and come back and Hammer it again next year. I mean there there’s still a pretty good team. Although there is that question of the ticking Time Bomb might these guys are getting a year older and a year older and all our guys that are older or under these really long contract. I don’t know maybe we do need to start doing something a little bit more dramatic a little bit more.
19m 47s – 20m 47s
Secure Kendricks the odds of him playing at this level again or basically zero, he’s never play that at that high of a level ever in his career. He’s arguably the top linebacker in all football and I’ve been dogging the guy for 4 since forever saying he’s overrated Kendrick sandbach. You certainly was November 8th of this year and you know Everson Griffen and daneel Hunter very very good. But, you know the age catches up with everybody. These guys are both in or push in 32. Neil’s obviously a lot younger. He’s got a lot of tread left but Everson Griffen. I know you got them locked up long-term, but that doesn’t mean you got a quality player locked up long-term. He’s 32 just cuz you sign them through 35 doesn’t mean you’re freezing his age. So I don’t know. I mean if it’s true that they are considering moving on from their head coach. It’s certainly true that they could be willing to move on from there. They’re wide receiver, especially if he is kind of a head case and you feel as though he’s a negative in the locker room. I don’t know that he is I mean sometimes loud guys like that are positive other teammates really like him and I think her cousin says very much cuz he’s always screaming at cousin but so is
20m 47s – 21m 47s
The receiver feelings constantly getting into space 2 so you have to cut him if that’s if you’re just worried about him his Kirk Cousins feelings and Kirk Cousins is probably gonna be gone pretty soon. Anyway, so what are you worried about that for? Anyways, that’s enough about the Vikings. But I guess here’s to hoping you know, if the offseason has been really crazy since what like 2017 when it just really went nuts and we’ve seen teams do things that you know people that have been watching football for a long time. You just think that would never happen. That’s to correct. Those things have been happening the last few years, but some of the biggest stars just randomly end up on different teams. So it’ll be interesting to watch the Vikings in the kind of gauge and see what their strategy is which for a long time has been. Let’s just retain everybody at some point. You got to assume that they’re going to try to blow it up a little bit. We’ll see what happens little bit of minor Packers news parent leave the Packers had to work out with CFL running back to Shawn Amos. No clue. If there’s any relation to Adrian Amos. However, he is a r was a Calgary stampeder and a teammate of Reggie begelton another guy that we had.
21m 47s – 22m 47s
I believe sign to a reserve Futures deal. So we’ll see what happens when it comes to a PC still doing a lot of work and it clearly they’ve been doing some work in the CFL as well. And you know, I’m not going to not get a job goop the man knows what he’s doing. So we’ll see how the last thing I want to bring up before we take a break and get into some other more. I don’t know what college visit philosophical type thing. There was a point brought up by no other than OJ Simpson that Aaron Rodgers probably still has a chip on his shoulder against the 49ers leaving aside the part where that was a very long time ago because you probably still have some kind of a chip something that OJ seems to be forgetting is that he probably has a chip had a ship on the shoulder on November 24th, when we lost 30728 probably had a chip on his shoulder when we lost of the 49ers 23 to 20 back in 2014 as well as losing twice to the 49ers the year before
22m 47s – 23m 47s
So I’m not so sure that that really holds a lot of water I bring it up just because it’s entirely possible that there’s some pack offense of her then go. Oh, yeah, he was snubbed therefore. He’s angry therefore he wants revenge do this is the third time we face it for San Francisco in the playoffs with Aaron Rodger We Roll for 2. So yeah, maybe but I’m not putting a lot on that. However, he was the one thing I will say to try to get a little bit to that bigger than Aaron Rodgers is the general theme that although the Packers haven’t been perfect. They win when it matters, I would focus little bit more on that to be honest the fact that yes, we did lose to them earlier in the regular season, but when it really matters do we have the guys on this team come up and play a good football game and again to win when it matters that’s been there Mo all year. So be very Packers ask of them to have an ugly series with the 49ers but ultimately win when it matters and to once again prove everybody wrong something they’ve been doing literally all
23m 47s – 24m 47s
Let’s take a break and then I want to get in to see how much of this other stuff we can get at. I want to start with the the first thing first. That is this Eric eager guy who is a vitriolic anti Packers Vikings fan who is trying to put on his analytics hat as he tries to dismantle the Green Bay Packers and the shocking thing is that although other people are doing a fairly good job of it. Just just laying out historical fact and letting it lie there and letting Packer fans. Overreacting look like The Crazy Ones this Eric dude is just out of his mind. So I want to kind of walk through this a little bit to matter simply means that the offense is what is most predictive and actually this game was a perfect example of that. So it’s pretty clear. He’s trying to defend something right? He’s he’s he’s not walking something back but he got called out for something dumb and he’s trying to defend it. First of all, what in the world are you talking about? Trying to defend apparently some comment he made about defense.
24m 47s – 25m 47s
Doesn’t matter which is dumb as the guy that has in a self-proclaimed way written the book on it. That’s just not true offense is more predictive of success. That’s not true. Remember what my little project was quarterback versus defense, which really is how they started off. That’s what I call it ends up being sort of what the predictive odds of winning based on your statistical points where you rank in terms of points and yards on offense and a defendant in a mathematical sense looking at every single Super Bowl winner throughout all of Super Bowl history. I looked at what the percentage odds are based on all these things and end points against which is defensive points allowed is by far the most predictive in terms of actually winning a Super Bowl 30% 30% of all Super Bowl winners have the number one overall defense. That’s just number one.
25m 47s – 26m 46s
I’ve been through all this stuff before he’s just wrong about this defense is more predictive of success know if you’re talking about maybe some other things. I I don’t know what is initial claim was but he’s absolutely wrong having a great offense is going to help you win the Superbowl but having a better defense is much more predictive and then for him to go on and say end this game was a great example of that. Excuse me, the Packers won because of their offense against the Seattle defense. Is that the claim that you’re making that’s absurd It song about the Packers five sacks Russell Wilson had a better day than Aaron Rodgers did statistically it was Aaron who it was Russell Wilson versus the Packers defense. That was the story of this game. This was not an example of that. If you go back over history the last time they played in the playoffs the Seahawks want and it was Seattle’s defense against the Packers offense. This was Seattle’s offense against the Packers defense in both cases defense came out on top two hilarious thing though. Is that his co-host
26m 47s – 27m 47s
Yeah, that’s right. And then goes on to explain how the Packers defense was really good and that the Seattle offense was really good what this game was? Absolutely. I mean we were we were told the entire in a sort of going into the game that Green Bay was more Stout up front in Seattle and they were I mean, they think pressured Wilson more than 50% of his dropbacks. But ultimately Russell Wilson and the Seahawks have gained the Packers. They made a lot of plays Wilson at 106 passer rating when pressured their yards per play We’re actually higher than their historical, you know average for the season. I think they were saying that offense is more important than defense and this game shows in the co-host goes. Yeah, that’s true. Seattle’s offense was incredible. And in fact, they played better on offense then they have all year, but the Packers defense was better. Maybe they just think Seattle one. I don’t know.
27m 47s – 28m 13s
I’m a little confused because the initial statement for mr. Eric was defense doesn’t matter the whole Cohoes comes out and says, yes, he knows offense was great Packers defense was great Packers won and to look at his face as he just sits there and watch it happen to him is hilarious Cindy goes down and tries to do damage control and explain how Green Bay’s defense actually isn’t that good? And that in fact, I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know listen to what this guy is trying to do here.
28m 14s – 28m 48s
Upoint were talking before this which is like Willie Turner Turner drops a stone cold light up in past. That’s not an example of Green Bay’s defense being great, right? It’s an example of offense dictating what happens in this game great offense is going to win out right? That’s just what happened and that offense is also going to make your defense look good, right? So Russell Wilson in this game his fatal flaw was that he held onto the ball a long time and he did not feel the pressure and Aaron Rodgers. Stop. Stop. Stop. Stop stop.
28m 49s – 29m 49s
Wow, this is this is how I knew he was a Vikings fan. This is how I absolutely knew because this makes no sense Point number one offense dictates to defense. So the point you’re making is basically the the way that I’m going to be right about this is that I’m going to say offense is more important the defense and if you point out to me a good defense I’m going to say that it wasn’t actually good defense was just bad offense, which you can do in every case, except your one example is ridiculous. You gave one example of a guy dropping a pass how many other dropped passes were there? And and what are the five sacks come into play and how about the dropped interception? Can we just hand him? Can we hand Kevin King the ball since we’re just going to make stuff up. Let me ask you another question explain to me how the Tennessee Titans beat the number one ranked offense in football. How did that happen? It don’t even give me this garbage about Lamar didn’t play. Well, he threw some of the most pinpoint perfect passes I’ve ever seen in my life. He was running for his life. That is a very good offense that try to dictate a with but loss.
29m 49s – 30m 35s
To a better defense because the old adage that defense wins championships has kind of been true for a while. If you don’t have a good defense, you don’t have yourself a Super Bowl the last time a team won. The didn’t have a top-10 defense was the 2013 Ravens and I tell you right now with 100% certainty that was a top-10 defense by the time they hit the playoffs and Ray Lewis said guys. I just need one more the last time a team won Super Bowl without a top-10 defense or offense. 2016 Bronco that offense was not good at all. The quarterback was ranked 39th about the number 4 ranked scoring defense in the number one defense in terms of yarded and know their quarterback didn’t get better in the postseason. He was the same guy that couldn’t hardly do any of it. At least physically this it this is such.
30m 36s – 31m 36s
Ridiculous nonsense trying to say that despite the fact that it was actually the Packers defense that one and then the Seahawks offense that lost another what’s a good offense force a good defense and the defense with the way you twist. This is by actually saying the the Seahawks offense wasn’t good. The guy just laid out the statistics. It was a very good offensive performance and Russell Wilson played out of his mind and a know he held on the ball too long. I wonder why genius you think maybe it’s cuz nobody was open because you know defense, what are you talkin about? Why are you doing this the reputation of Pro Football Focus is going in the tank. Every time you open your mouth PFF is all about Advanced analytics. It’s about statistics is supposed to be about facts right that the even her grading scale is based on a very strict criteria of factual information and you got this guy flapping his gums sing the dumbest crap I’ve ever heard of my life offense dictates to defense a good defense.
31m 36s – 32m 36s
Is nothing more than a bad offense. What are you talkin about? This these words have never been spoken in the history of the universe ever accept by this Vikings fan who forgets that he’s on on an actual broadcast and his hatred of the Packers has so consumed him that he can’t even form a coherent thought he is. So Lowe’s to give the Packers any credit that he’s essentially saying that the Seahawks just their offense just fell apart. The five sacks just kind of happened Russell Wilson held onto the ball because he just felt like it not because nobody was open but because he felt like it despite the fact we saw the replays in the coverage and nobody was open and there was nowhere to go with the ball for not going to give Packers any credit this this this is exactly the problem and I don’t I don’t think we’re going to have time to get to my other thing. Maybe we’ll talk about it tomorrow. I don’t have a problem with the analytics Community. But but this is no different than than the end in the political realm there statistics and there is evidence for just about anything that you want to prove and when you get people with enough
32m 36s – 33m 36s
They’ll try to use all this stuff to basically paint the picture that just isn’t so and this is not even a coherent looking picture. This isn’t even using statistics or anyting. This is just a guy that’s lost his mind either. He’s lost his mind. He’s never had one. I don’t know. I don’t know who this guy is. I’ve never heard him speak before but this is dumb and it’s not just cuz he’s talking about the pack of this is the end of this is a stance that he’s taking that offense is more important the defense an example of a defense beating out the offense. It’s because the offense didn’t do what it’s supposed to do that’s called circular logic my friend. That’s not how this works. That’s not how anything works. If you’re listening to this and you want I can let you borrow my thirteen-year-old daughters introduction to logic book. It’ll maybe help you work through this a little bit. She’s done with that when she’s moved on to intermediate logic so you can borrow the the intro to logic book if you if you want it seems like you you might need it but the but the but that’s what that’s what gets me so frustrated about this because there are people that are just being honest.
33m 36s – 34m 36s
I don’t have any problem with Vegas giving better odds the 49ers again. I trust Vegas because Vegas is just all they care about is money. I trust a greedy capitalist because they just care about money there a biased they’re not willing to to to lose money to get their way of Vikings fan working at a casino setting a betting line is not going to move the line to sort of hurt the Packers fans feeling because they just care about money and so I can trust them doesn’t mean they’re right but they’re going to take all the available information which is the other thing I wanted to talk about but we don’t have time is in a how much how much of the stuff that we can see accounts for the whole picture. That’s sort of a another question that will try to talk about tomorrow because some of the analytics people seem to think that all the information we have is all the information we need and my ability to take the information and paint the correct picture is is 100% accurate. So I am all-knowing and that’s that’s when you get to be obnoxious. I love analytics. I love none.
34m 36s – 35m 36s
The love playing with stuff because it provides a little bit of context. It paints a picture but the actual Beauty and football I’ll give you the end of the story tomorrow. I’ll just ruin it is the fact that we don’t know anyting the fact that there isn’t a supercomputer that’s going to tell us who wins the Super Bowl because there will never be a super computer that can tell us that because there is an unknown quantity to the human element of football that will always remain unknown that at that can’t ever be no that is the part about football that makes football special statistics will never be able to touch that part of football ever until some of these people are just wildly speaking out of turn and I’m to the point now that anytime I see it. I’m just going to try to come swing it if you want to say you think the 49ers and I went I don’t care that’s fine. You should think that if I wasn’t a pack of Five Nights at 49ers going to win and I don’t need the other game. I don’t know. How do I run things Chiefs? I’m kind of leaning Titans a little bit same way. I was leaning Titans against the Raven cuz you have these wildly good offense is going up against a team that has a rat that is just a solidly, you know steady team.
35m 36s – 36m 36s
You don’t like I go for the study Team every time it was steady Patriots looking team versus team that let a team score 24 points in a quarter and then came back and scored like 30 or three touchdowns in 3 minutes. That is the epitome of volatility. Anyways, that’s neither here nor there point is I have no problem with Packer fans saying I think we’re going to lose that I’ve gotten so many messages saying I’m not feeling good about this. I don’t think we’re going to win that doesn’t bother me letters are a good team. Even if they weren’t there’s no guarantees in football, which is another thing that the analytics Community doesn’t want to look at. They look at the fact that the Packers almost lost the Lions save their for their garbage. Why because your supercomputer said if they were good, they would have blown him out of the water. Your supercomputer is stupid and I hate the fact that I am at war with the analytics Community because I feel like these are my people. I’m the one that’s been taking the the arrows for PFF for 2 year haven’t talked about how we can go back up in this and this guy is not the embodiment of what PFF is. I don’t know who he is. I don’t know why he’s there. I don’t know who liked who gave him a microphone.
36m 36s – 37m 36s
Speaking anything factual or even using what is going on with Twitter do this is ridiculous the stuff that’s trending is just get out of here. I got to get off here stuff popping up like why is what anyways, so there’s a lot more I want to talk about but, you know time constraints and whatnot. I know. It’s only 36 minutes in but I got to go to work speaking of a couple things everyone. Don’t forget patreon if everybody listening decides to give me a dollar a month. I can start working on my sales pitch to my wife to quit my job. It won’t work, but I’ll start I’ll try secondly on a slightly more serious note, although I would seriously appreciate that regardless of what happens with the Green Bay Packers in a few weeks. The season is over. Let me encourage you because there’s a lot more listeners now than there have been over the past year because of how much popularity with the Packers and their the playoffs and all that. Let me encourage you to please stick around after the season is over if you need a couple days to recoup after a loss if there is a loss, that’s fine. But but please come back.
37m 36s – 38m 36s
Because I’ll tell you what the offseason is when things get fun with the draft coming up with free agency coming up. This this is one of my favorite times of the year. In fact that the Packers won in the playoffs. This would already be my favorite time of the year. It’s the time when we get to dream as Packer fans about what can be what might be to look at the prospects to look at the free agents. And then once we get them to talk about what they might be able to do for the offseason is the time to dream about what could be it’s also that the best time to go back and really digging deep into what the Packers were. Not just what they can be but what they really were in to theorize and that’s what I love the most the regular season is not my favorite time to podcast it’s easy because everything is laid out for you, but it almost kind of gets monotonous is the same thing at the same schedule as it’s just but you got to hit on these points so I can’t get away from it. Even on a daily podcast you get your routines in your ritual. I like the offseason the offseason is when the fun happen, so, please let me encourage you to at least stick around for
38m 36s – 39m 12s
Weaker for 2 weeks just to see if if I’m lying to you and if you don’t love it, and if you’re not getting some inside, so you never thought you would and if you’re not enjoying the offseason by all means going to the football hibernation, and we’ll we’ll see you again in August, but I promise you this offseason going to be a lot of fun. I’m still planning on doing daily. I did it daily last year didn’t think I could but I made it and I fully intend to do it again. So that’s my pan. I’d love to see the numbers increase in the offseason instead of decrease. Anyways, you folks have ourselves a fantastic day. It’s us against the world, and that’s exactly how it needs to be. I will talk to you tomorrow. Have a good one. Bye. Bye.

VICE: Face Shapes and Blood Types: Wading into the World of Online Dating in China
The Mandarin term shengnu literally means “leftover woman.” It was coined to describe China’s growing crop of middle-class women who, thanks to new educational and economic opportunities, have been able to rise to unprecedented ranks within Chinese society—at the expense of their love lives. Nearing (or, heaven forbid, passing) the age of 30, these women find themselves materially successful but romantically unattached.
As a female in her mid-20s, living in China with a graduate degree and no significant other, I’ve been particularly sensitive to the term’s use. But while local media and gossipy mothers often use it derisively, my leftover sisters and I have come to embrace it as a badge of honor worn by independent women who know what they want and are unwilling to settle.
We shengnu are in dual position of being supposedly desperate, but in actuality having all kinds of men to choose from. In 2003, Gong Haiyan, a single coed from Shanghai, started the online date site Jiayuan.com (“Beautiful Destiny”) because she was frustrated by the lack of legitimate dating options she found around her. The bare-bones website she initially sketched out has since grown into China’s largest online-dating website, with over 56 million registered users, more than OKCupid and PlentyOfFish combined.
Like Gong Haiyan, I have, in my years in China, had little luck on the traditional meat market, so I decided to see if her internet service, and a few others like it, could be a better matchmaker for me.
Signing up for an account on Jiayuan or any of China’s other big-three dating services starts like most sites: cheesy screenname, recently created email account, vaguely accurate description of age and looks. But just like democracy, dating in China has developed distinct Asian characteristics. Your blood type, face shape, and willingness to have your future in-laws live with you are treated as basic information (O-positive, duck-egg-shaped, to be discussed when the time comes, for the record).
My profile photo also proved to be a sticking point. It was rejected three times, initially because I chose some abstract avatar, then because not enough of my face was visible. “Show the world who you really are,” the site moderator urged. Although that struck me as contrary to everything the internet stands for, I submitted my passport photo and was passed to the next phase.
While most of your profile’s essentials can be filled out with the help of a drop-down menu, the final stage requires a personalized self-introduction. A provided example on Zhenai.com (“Precious Love”) is instructive as to what kind of women the service is appealing to:
Before, in order to focus on my studies, my mom didn’t let me date. Now, because of work, I don’t have time to date. As time passed, I suddenly discovered I’d already become one of the “shengnu.”Actually my demands for my other half aren’t that high. He doesn’t have to be that handsome, or that wealthy, but he must be motivated, responsible, obedient, and that’s about all. I have great hopes and visions for my future, but I hope to accomplish them with the person I love….
It was flattering but not altogether too surprising that within minutes of activating my profile, my inbox was flooded with messages. The first came from a 26-year-old, O-type (hurray our children, or rather our child, will be a universal donor!), triangle-faced man named “Poisonsc…” But as I browsed through his profile, alarm bells quickly went off. He was a private entrepreneur. He listed his monthly income as 3-5,000 renmindi per month (equal to about $480-800 dollars, an average white-collar salary). He didn’t own a car or a house yet. No wonder he was single.
With the growing numerical disparity and social parity between sexes, women know that not just anyone will do anymore. Owning a car and home are standard expectations before marriage. A candidate’s appeal rises if he has a five-figure monthly salary and stable career (state-owned corporations are best), but falls if that means he has to work overtime and thus won’t be around to whisk his partner off on romantic dates. Modern China’s romance with materialism was epitomized on the popular TV dating game show “Are You The One”, when one contestant famously claimed she’d rather cry in the back of a BMW than smile on a bicycle.
Baihe.com (meaning “Lily”, but also literally “Hundred Matches”) makes it easy to weed out the scrubs. Users can sort users by age, height, education, and income. Though IRL I’d like to think I’ve never judged any person by such narrow criteria, I decided if I was going to date in China, I had to do it with a Chinese mindset. So clicking the obvious choice, I browsed on.
The top hit was a block-headed 30-year-old with a lush head of hair named Heavy. The self-described “Chairman-looking” home-owner had posted half a dozen photos of him frolicking on an exotic beach. He clearly had the right salary-to-free-time ratio.
Like nearly every male profile I browsed, though, Heavy had almost no demands of his partner. He wanted someone between 24-28 years old, 140-175 cm tall, preferably ethnically Han. But income, education, and housing situation—factors that can make or break a man's prospects—were all listed as “no preference.”
Despite the cold rationalism that seems to surround these sites, all these sites still cling to the sweet romantic notions. It's about finding your other half. Each user, before finalizing their profile, must check off a box affirming their good moral character and honest intention to search for a spouse on the site, NOT a one-night stand. Bang With Friends, this most certainly is not.
But while sites try to ensure pureness of heart, there's no escaping the internet's inherent ability to con, especially in a country that trades on its ability to mass produce fake Chanel purses and pirated DVDs.
When I began my online search, the Chinese Lunar New Year was fast approaching. It’s a time when virtually everyone in the country returns home, gathers with their loved ones, and is ruthlessly interrogated about their personal lives. Accordingly, internet message boards light up with ads seeking and offering rental girlfriends and boyfriends. Taobao, China’s version of eBay, for a while banned the search term altogether.
“Busy at work, no time to consider relationships,” reads a typical message. “Can anyone help me cope with the parental pressure?”
Though joke and scam posts are rampant, I decided to respond to one that at least sounded thorough. User 19760923b was a 32-year-old male, Master’s degree, 180 cm, 75 kg, “probably considered good looking” seeking a 25- to 30-year-old female for an eight day "rental" to northeastern China.
“I’m just a regular office worker, not anyone rich, so anyone looking to get rich or become a mistress please don’t apply. If you’re too ugly or too fat, it will tip my parents off, so sorry, you won’t be considered.” What a charmer.
19760923b promised the rental wouldn’t be required to sleep in the same room or perform any kissing and fondling, though she “must be willing to hold hands.” He offered 300-800 Renminbi per day, negotiable. The deal also included train tickets to and from Beijing. If necessary, he’d be willing to also accompany his rental girlfriend to her hometown.
Using a mix of my latent Chinese class skills and Google Translate, I wrote a brief note expressing my desire to fake it. Within a couple of hours, I received an email: “Thank you for your reply, but I don’t think you will be a good match to bring home.” Even to play a sham girlfriend, the rejection felt real.
But my heartbreak was soon eased. A bounty of new "flirts" and "winks" were waiting in my inbox. One man in particular, using the name “Single-Minded,” had sent 13 messages in a span of 35 minutes. Though back home such over-eagerness would be ruthlessly mocked over a round of drinks with girlfriends, in China, it felt reassuringly sincere.
“Your subtle smile makes my heart jump,” cooed his first message. “I love to smile too. I hope we can smile together. Can I get to know you more?”
Mousing through his profile, I learned he was university educated, a car and home owner, and employed in finance by a Fortune 500 company. I was already imagining my mother’s approving nod.
In his next note, he waxed even more poetic: “In the whole world, who knows how many millions of people pass us by, but fate made me stop and look at your photo. I hope you will look back at me.”
His clear, unobstructed profile photo showed an athletically built man in his early 30s, with hair gelled into the snow cone swirl common among aspiring C-Pop stars. He was also wearing what looked like a lumpy holiday sweater knit by his grandmother. A sign of filial piety, I hoped.
As I clicked to respond, a screen flashed open offering me a series of ready-made responses. There was the generic, “Thank you for your interest. Please tell me more: ^.^” Or the flirtier, “If you read my message, write back so I know you reciprocate O(n_n)O.” Or the straightforward rejection: “Thank you for your interest. I don’t think our circumstances are a fit. Good luck, hope you find your soulmate.” I wondered if 19760923b had copied his response from here.
But as I considered what level of emoticon flirtation to use, I realized Single-Minded’s messages had also been computer generated. A row of tabs suggested dozens of opening lines, categorized from "funny" to "cute." Worst of all, my Single-Minded suitor had chosen from the "standard" section. He didn’t even use a creative scripted response!
Outraged, I aired my sense of betrayal to a male Chinese friend. Far from sharing my indignation, though, he bashfully confessed that at the age of 25 and just entering his first official relationship, he too had used a move learned from an American teen soap. How else, he asked, were young people, sheltered by overprotective parents since birth and often right through their adult lives, supposed to know how to hit on girls?
If, as they say, Chariman Mao abolished arranged marriages in 1951 after his own unhappy experience with the practice during his first marriage, the system that’s replaced it hasn’t made finding a genuine connection any easier for Chinese men and women. In the end, I got rejected for the role of a rental girlfriend, used an algorithm to pick out men by their income and blood type (which I later discovered in Asia is associated with certain personality types similar to zodiac signs; type-Os are ambitious, self-confident, and recommended to eat extra poultry and fish), got wooed by a succession of swirly-haired men with scripts, and continue to be harassed by all three dating companies trying to sell me additional matchmaking services. But I am still no closer than before to finding my soulmate.
And probably even further from finding a one-night stand.

Reaching Your Potential: How To Improve Your Growtopia Mod Apk Skills
Have you ever played a video game? If the answer is no, don't worry, as you are not alone. Although it may be a worldwide trend, there are many people who have never touched a video game in their lives. The following article contains some advice on Growtopia Hack to help you get started.
Buy your games preowned. Video games can sometimes be really pricey, sometimes more than 50 bucks. You might not be able to afford this, especially if you are not sure if you will like the game. If you buy the games pre-owned you can get them as much as 75 to ninety percent off eventually.
If you are a parent, make sure to check the ESRB ratings on a video game before making a purchase for your youngster. Many video games include some very bloody moments and/or a foul language and sexual innuendo. If you are concerned over your child experiencing these things, learn the ratings system and buy accordingly.
Monitor your child's video game playing time. Video games are extremely fun and very addictive. A child can get sucked into a game for hours on end if there is no parental supervision. Pay attention to the child's time and force breaks and maximum playing times to make sure your youngster still enjoys the world around him.
Always look at the platform before buying a Growtopia Hacks for your computer. If you own a computer made by Apple, for example, you cannot run a PC game on your system. Particularly, if you aren't paying attention, it is easy to make this mistake. Invest an extra minute in the buying process to determine that you have the right version of the game.
Before your child plays a video game, play the game yourself. Don't only use ESRB ratings and the word of others. There may be content in the game that you really don't want to expose your child to, and the only way you'll know is by playing for a little while first.
Create a video game schedule for your children. Just like mandatory homework time, this video game schedule will help take control of a youngster's habits. When the times have been set, stick to the schedule. Don't back down because of whining or begging. The schedule is only effective if you follow through.
If you have video game rules for your family, get them on paper and hang them up for all to see. A visual guide to the rules has much greater impact on behavior than rules that are simply spoken, but never written down. Place them in a well-trafficked area like on your refrigerator door.
If you are having difficulty seeing a Growtopia Cheats while you are playing it, try adjusting the brightness setting. This should make the screen appear crisp, enhancing your gaming experience. And let's face it, you will not achieve any kind of success if you can't see what you are doing, so make the game work for you.
Sell your old gaming items. Instead of just letting your gaming items you no longer use sit around and collect dust, sell them. You can either sell them online or at many different game stores. In most areas you can find video game stores that buy and sell gaming items.
Wait for game of the year editions of major titles. These often come out a year or more after the original title, but include a lot of the downloadable and extra content that was released in stages after the initial title. These games offer a lot more bang for the buck.
Always see if there's a downloadable demo of a game on your console. A lot of Growtopia Hack Gems companies will put out short demos that will allow you to try a game before you buy it. Since most of the games systems have hard drives these days, you won't have to rent a game just to try it.
If you do not play a game any longer, you can still make money off of it. Many stores offer trade-in credits for older games. You can put the cash that you receive from trading in an old video game towards the cost of buying a new video game.
Hunt for educational titles. They are not always prominently displayed among the main blockbusters in video game stores or electronic sections, but they are out there. Talk to other parents or ask associates for specific suggestions, as titles exist that help out with learning languages, mastering science and practicing mathematics.
Look at video game ratings. Like movie ratings, video games are rated depending on their content. The ESRB includes several ratings for video game titles. These ratings are EC, E, E10+, Teen, Mature, AO, and RP. "EC" or Early Childhood is for gamers 3 and older, "E" is for Everyone is for gamers 6 and older, "E10+" is for Everyone 10 and older, "Teen" is for gamers 13 and older, "Mature" is for Growtopia Gem Hack 18 and older, "AO" is Adults Only for gamers 18 and older, and "RP" means Rating Pending.
If you are looking for video games for your child, make sure that the games are age-appropriate. A lot of video games are designed to be played by adults and may contain content that is too violent for children. Read the description, ratings, and reviews to ensure you will choose wisely.
Try using parental controls. Some newer video game consoles and some handheld hardware devices let you limit the type of content that they allow their children to access. You can do this by activating some parental control features that are already built in. This makes sure that your child only plays games with the ratings you feel are appropriate for them.
It's never too late to start playing video games. No matter your level of experience or age, you can always pick up a video game and start playing it. If you've never tried Growtopia Mod Apk before, then now is the perfect time to use the advice provided and start playing.

PART 1Hey anon just to keep this easy to read I'm gonna break your ask into 2 parts. Thank you so much for sending me these! 😚11. What's an inner joke you have with your friends?14. If you were to live with your best friend in an old flat in a big city, what would it look like?15. Go Google a weird space fact and tell us what it is!16. What's your favorite pasta dish?17. What color do you really want to dye your hair?18. Tell us something dumb/funny you did that has since gone down in history between you and your friends and is always brought up?20. What's your favorite eye color?28. Sunrise or sunset?29. What's something really cute that one of your friends does and is totally endearing?30. Think of it: have you ever been truly scared?32. Tell us something that happened to you after 3AM when you were with friends.36. Which bands sound would fit your mood right now?Now that I'm being put on the spot I can't think of any inside jokes but I know we have a lot of good ones 😓 One inside joke that me and my sister have is when someone says they're going to do something in a grumpy or its something mean we'll say "good luck with that" in a SpongeBob voice like from the SpongeBob movie If I were to live with my best friend @kityri-imera) place would have two bedrooms, a kitchen and livingroom connected and two bathrooms would be nice, but realistically there would only be one. We would definitely have fairy lights hung along the walls. Also there would have to be big windows. Our TV would be surrounded by gaming consoles and shelves with games. I would have to have potted plants scattered throughout our shared area. An ideal view for the window would be the lights and skyline of the city.Inside the Eagles head nebula (also known as the Star Queen Nebula, what an awesome name!) there are formations known as the Pillars of Creation. They are called this because they create new stars! My favorite pasta dish is parmesan cheese stuffed ravioliI really want to dye my hair either electric blue or a dark chestnut One time after health class kityri and I were walking out of the class room when one of the pins on my bag fell off. As I was trying to fix it she jumped in to help and for some reason I said "I'm gonna wreck it" in a deep voice. And we quoted that for a while. We don't so much anymore though. My favorite eye color is either deep blue or greySunset because the temperature starts to cool off, you get that purpley darkness just starting to settle and the faint hints of the first stars start to appearMy best friend (once again @kityri-imera) does this thing when we see each other where we throw our arms in the air, say each other's name really high pitched and walk to each other like that then we hug :3I have been truly afraid once. It was when me and my sister were home alone, she was probably 16 and I was 15. We live in a pretty rural area, you can't go anywhere without being surrounded by either the woods or the lake, and the neighborhood dogs all roam freely. Our dogs come home with a dead chicken in one's mouth. And I think to my self, who let's their chickens run loose when we have predators like coyotes and foxes right outside our houses? So we think nothing of it. I figured someone probably threw a dead chicken into the woods where our dogs found it. Then we hear a four-wheeler come flying down our driveway. And then a loud banging on our door. I answer it and standing there is a woman, red faced, and a look that could kill. Before I even get the door open completely she starts yelling and hitting the wall next to the door with her fists. She informs me, between the curses and vulgar names I will not repeat, that our dogs killed her chicken. She threatens me and my sister, our father (who was away at work) and threatens to shoot our dogs. This angry shouting and name calling goes on for about 5 minutes but it feels like an hour. And then she says she is going to get her gun to kill our dogs. Before she leaves she shoves our propane powered grill and then she gets back on her four-wheeler and hauls ass back down our driveway. Me and my sister are now starting to panic because this woman is known to be bipolar, use drugs like cocaine, and drink alcohol excessively. So we don't know what she's capable of. My sister calls our dad, I lock our dogs in the basement and we lock the doors to the house and hide in our room, waiting for that woman to speed down our driveway with a gun and try to kill our dogs or us. And in that time span I was truly afraid Luckily my dad called the police and came home as fast as he could. He got home and went straight to the woman's house and we didn't hear anything about it again. So i dont really have a story about a time with friends, since we're nerds and just play video games and watch youtube when we're up that late. But i have one with my cousin and their friends. One time in Illinois my cousin was having a sleep over with a couple of friends and invited me. We stayed up real late playing ps2 games, and one of the friends got the idea to go into the corn fields around my cousins house. They live in a rural part of Illinois nowhere near a town. We snuch out of the house and ventured into the feilds. We stayed grouped up so we wouldn't get lost in the corn, which is super easy to do because it's so freaking tall. Eventually we emerged into this clear area that was kinda raised and we spent a while just laying on the ground and talking. We eventually went back to the house exhausted and cut up by the corn leaves and slept till noon.Pingrove or The Front Bottoms would probably fit my mood right now.

I’m gonna try @sabath68 @mskatthestrange @capricorn-child @superfuckingextra @cheshirehuntergirl @invincibella @spangelbanger @krypter-krypter If you like doing meme/tag games and I didn’t tag you let me know and I’ll try to remember to tag you going forward.
(I wrote these answers a few days ago, but this was the first time I was able to get to a computer.)
the last 1. drink: a barrel aged Martinez cocktail 2. phone call: a call for work 3. text message: Suggesting to my husband that my perfect my perfect Maui vacation might be "Eating fresh papaya & mango while listening to the nerd-sexy voice of Grover Gardener telling us cool shit." 4. song you listened to: Tthhee Ppaarrttyy by Justice (it's one of my writing themes for Stacy Chen from the Uncomfortable Adventures of Sam in Law School series).
5. time you cried: about 10 days ago. My thyroid levels were off, which made one of my semiannual depressive periods manifest outwardly. 6. dated someone twice: I've been dating my husband for almost twelve years. 7. kissed someone and regretted it: never. 8. been cheated on: never. 9. lost someone special: my classmate & friend who is/was one of the main inspirations for Sam in UASLS. 10. been depressed: a week ago I got out of a roughly month long depressive period 11. gotten drunk and thrown up: a little over a year ago. It was the most drunk I've ever been and since then I've been a one drink kinda girl.
3 favorite colors 12. Red 13. Purple 14. Black
in the last year have you 15. made new friends: yes 16. fallen out of love: no. I've never fallen out of love with anyone, friend or lover, though I have practiced self-preservation through distance. 17. laughed until you cried: yes. I laugh until I cry & snort at least once a week. I keep humorous company and I love absurdity. 18. found out someone was talking about you: negatively? no. 19. met someone who changed you: yes, at least I hope so. 20. found out who your friends are: I can't tell if this is a positive or negative. I've had a lot of friends reaffirm themselves to me in the last year. 21. kissed someone on your Facebook list: About three of them.

I'm super looking forward to having this long 5 years over with. 29. when was the last time you saw your mum: this morning 31. what are you listening to right now: Chamberlain's defense of Little Round Top in the movie Gettysburg (1993). It's currently platinum blonde/silver. 36. long or short hair: 100% short. The shorter the better. The only reason I didn't stick with a buzz was because I was a bit too androgynous for my husband. (He's very understanding/supportive of me being genderqueer, but I try to accommodate his heterosexuality in this respect.) 37. do you have a crush on someone: Maybe? I find a lot of my friends attractive because I'm attracted to personality, but that being said I'm completely in love with/devoted to my husband. The closest thing is billiards (mostly pool). My grandpa was great at it and took pride in turning his innocent little granddaughter into a shark. I don't practice nearly enough anymore, but I used consistently pull off trick shots & combinations, and could run the table on good days. 51. vacation: I'm perfectly happy to spend my free time relaxing at home, but my next vacation is going to be New Orleans. 52. pair of trainers: I don't exercise, so I don't have trainers. I mostly wear black combat style boots or sandals. 53. eating: Pickled deviled eggs, salt & vinegar chips, & sea salt caramel macarons. 54. drinking: I've been working on this so long I've now most recently had water. 55. i’m about to: I'll probably work on the next four episodes of UASLS as I lay in bed trying to fall asleep. 56. waiting for: In two weeks I can redo my blood labs and find out how my new antithyroid meds are doing. US Open golf 2021: first round – live! | Sport
7.05pm EDT 19:05
The 2009 Open champion Stewart Cink, 48, is enjoying something of an Indian summer. He’s won twice on Tour this season, and has started briskly at his first US Open since 2017. He rakes in a 25-footer from the back of 13 to join a 15-strong group at -1.
Updated at 7.08pm EDT
7.02pm EDT 19:02
Four hours to sunset in San Diego, then, give or take the odd minute. Chances are the first round won’t get finished tonight.
6.56pm EDT 18:56
Spectacular back-to-back birdies by Christiaan Bezuidenhout. The 27-year-old South African, who hovered around during the Masters and the PGA without quite sustaining any sort of bid, chips in from the back of 13, then screws a wedge from 130 yards to 18 inches on 14. He’s -1. None of the late starters have yet to get as high as -2.
6.49pm EDT 18:49
Rahm can’t get up and down from a bunker at the side of the par-three 11th, and he hands his opening birdie back to the field. Meanwhile DeChambeau responds to those back-to-back bogeys by obliterating a drive down the middle of 5. A huge smile spreads across his face; he enjoyed that, as did the gallery. Bogey for Jordan Spieth meanwhile at 12, and he’s +1.
6.44pm EDT 18:44
From off the front of 4, Bryson rolls a perfectly weighted long putt pin high. Problem is, it veers seven feet to the left, and he can’t make the par saver. The lip-out drops him to +1.
6.39pm EDT 18:39
DeChambeau flays his drive at 4 into the thick rough down the right. He expects his wedge to come out hot, and is surprised when his bump out stops short of the green. He’ll have some work to do if he’s to scramble his par. Back on 3, Sergio creams his iron into the heart of the green, using the camber to bring his ball back to the cup. He’s left with a 12-footer for birdie … but leaves it an inch wide left. He stays at level par.
6.34pm EDT 18:34
Cabrera Bello pars 9 to sign for a lovely opening 68. Adam Hadwin pars 18 for a 70. That’s the end of the morning wave, as far as the top end of the leader board goes, anyway.
-4: Henley (F) -3: F Molinari (F), Cabrera Bello (F) -2: Koepka (F), Schauffele (F)
6.28pm EDT 18:28
Some bother for the defending champion at 3. DeChambeau’s ball didn’t make it all the way down the bank to the penalty area, but a tight lie foxes him and he slam-dunks his second into the thickly covered bank. He clips a fine third to a couple of feet, limiting the damage to bogey. His partner Matsuyama, having fired his tee shot straight at the flag to six feet, strokes in for birdie. He’s now -1; Bryson slips back to level par. As does Sergio, who immediately hands back the birdie with bogey at 2.
6.24pm EDT 18:24
McIlroy makes his birdie putt on 1! A gimlet-eyed roll into the cup from 15 feet. What a start! Seeing he’s recently had a habit of playing his way out of the majors on Thursday, that’s surely going to settle a few nerves. Pars for DJ and Rose. Rahm tidies up for his birdie at 10.
6.21pm EDT 18:21
Jon Rahm is the favourite going into this week. Not only is he the form horse – he’d have walked the Memorial had he not tested positive for Covid-19 when six ahead after 54 holes – he’s also got one hell of a record here at Torrey Pines. Since 2017, he’s -51. The next cab on the rank is Tony Finau at -46, then Patrick Reed at -38. He opens up his bid by sending his second at 10 to eight feet.
6.18pm EDT 18:18
Birdie for DeChambeau at 2. He’d crashed a drive down the left of the fairway, then wedged close for a sure-fire birdie. But he’s in trouble at 3, sending his tee shot way out to the left of the 192-yard par-three. There’s a penalty area down there. Bryson’s old pal Brooks found it earlier this afternoon. Strange old game, eh. Back on 1, McIlroy muscles a fine wedge from the thick stuff into the heart of the green. It’s all beginning to happen.
6.15pm EDT 18:15
Here comes a glamour group consisting of three former winners: the 2016 champion Dustin Johnson, 2011 victor Rory McIlroy, and 2013’s Justin Rose. The latter is the only one who finds the fairway at 1; DJ is in the semi-rough to the left, while McIlroy has disappeared his ball into the deep filth down the right. In the group up ahead, Sergio birdies, holing out from the bunker guarding the front left of the green! And on 11, the young left-handed South African Garrick Higgo, who won his first Tour title four days ago at the Palmetto, continues his hot streak with an early birdie. A few of the late starters beginning to make waves.
6.07pm EDT 18:07
No birdies for DeChambeau or Matsuyama at 1. Both went close with their birdie efforts, but no cigar. Meanwhile some admin: Collin Morikawa ended up with a very disappointing 75, while Gary Woodland, Tony Finau and Viktor Hovland have had to settle for bang-average 74s. None of them are out of it yet, but they need to pull something out of the bag tomorrow if they’re to seriously compete.
6.05pm EDT 18:05
No left-hander has ever won the US Open. Scotland hasn’t had a winner since Willie Macfarlane in 1925. Could Bob MacIntyre end these long waits? Well, he’s just caressed his second at 2 straight at the flag, from 90 yards to a couple of feet. A birdie will take the 24-year-old from Oban – who already has a tie for sixth at the Open and a tie for 12th at the Masters on his CV – up to -1. He’s alongside Adam Hadwin on the leaderboard, the Canadian having just bogeyed 17.
5.58pm EDT 17:58
With the afternoon wave now taking to the course, there’s a bit of fresh meat on the leaderboard. Matt Wallace birdies 1, as does his compatriot Richard Bland, who at 48 won his first European Tour title after a quarter of a century of trying last month at the British Masters. He holes out from sand on 1 to start only his second appearance at the US Open – he missed the cut at Bethpage Black in 2009 – in style.
-4: Henley (F) -3: F Molinari (F), Cabrera Bello (15*) -2: Koepka (F), Schauffele (F), Hadwin (F) -1: E Molinari (F), Gomez (F), Rodgers (F), Wolff (F), Fitzpatrick (F), Hatton (F), Bland (2), Wallace (1)
5.53pm EDT 17:53
DeChambeau swishes a gentle wedge out of the fairway bunker at 1 and sets up a 12-foot birdie chance. Easy as that. He’s going round this afternoon with the Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama, who having found thick rough down the right with his tee shot, bumps a marvellous second into the front of the green, using the camber on the left to bring his ball back to 20 feet. From where he was, finding the green was good going; setting up a birdie chance is simply magnificent.
5.50pm EDT 17:50
Daniel Berger hasn’t really transferred his talents to the majors, apart from that one 54-hole lead at this tournament in 2018. The 28-year-old Floridian has started well this week, though, recovering from bogeys at 2 and 5 with birdies at 6, 13 and 15. He signs for a fine 70. Tyrrell Hatton is also back in the hutch with a 70.
5.47pm EDT 17:47
Here comes the defending champion Bryson DeChambeau! He bomb-and-gouged his way to a six-shot victory last September at Winged Foot, and he’s promised to take the same approach at Torrey Pines. Hey, if you can saunter to victory at a US Open after hitting just 41 percent of the fairways, a tournament low for a winner, there must be something in the plan. He’s warmly greeted by the gallery, and flashes a smile to match. Then he lashes his driver into a bunker down the left of 1. Entertainment ahoy, one way or another!
5.38pm EDT 17:38
A six-foot par effort by Matt Fitzpatrick slips by the hole at 18. A disappointing end to an otherwise impressive 70. Xander Schauffele pars 9 to end the day with a two-under 69, while his playing partner Phil Mickelson misses a ten-foot birdie effort by a mile, pulling it wide right. The record-breaking PGA champion ends up with a fairytale-compromising 75. He’s +4.
5.28pm EDT 17:28
Kevin Na has had a day to forget – he’s currently +7 – but he’s just played what could be the shot of the week. Left of the green at the par-three 16th, behind a bunker and shortsided, he viciously whipped his wedge through the thick rough, sending his ball about six miles into the air before landing it softly three feet from the flag. That is a breathtaking piece of skill, from a player who may have decided just to go for everything, and to hell with the consequences. That was great fun.
Updated at 5.28pm EDT
5.23pm EDT 17:23
Birdie for Francesco Molinari at 18. That’s a great finish, not least because he’d found himself in a greenside bunker, shortsided, and splashed gorgeously to five feet. That’s a 68, and it’s great to see the 2018 Open champ back after such a long barren spell. Given his brother Edoardo, a couple of shots further back, hasn’t played in a major since the 2015 Open, this is quite the renaissance event for the Molinaris.
-4: Henley (F) -3: F Molinari (F), Cabrera Bello (14*)
5.12pm EDT 17:12
Russell Henley sends his second at the par-five 18th to the back of the green, takes two putts for his birdie, and signs his name to a 67. He has sole ownership of the lead at -4. A couple of groups behind, Matt Fitzpatrick birdies 17 to move to -2. And back on 9, it’s a par for Brooks Koepka who will be happy enough with a 69, despite running out of gas a little on the way home.
-4: Henley (F) -3: Cabrera Bello (13*) -2: Koepka (F), F Molinari (17), Fitzpatrick (17), Schauffele (17*), Hadwin (14)
5.07pm EDT 17:07
Matthew Wolff ends his round par-par. Very strange, given he’d only made three over his first 16 holes. An absurd rollercoaster of a round that finishes with a perfectly respectable 70.
5.04pm EDT 17:04
Phil Mickelson’s chances of repeating his jaw-dropping victory at last month’s PGA Championship, and completing the career slam by winning the one major that’s eluded him, look pretty slim already. Back to back bogeys at 6 and 7 have seen yesterday’s birthday boy, 51, slip to +4. His putter is stone cold, and the rest of his game has been pretty wayward as well, something you simply can’t get away with on a US Open track. Hey, he’ll always have Kiawah, and in any case six runners-up finishes on the CV is a much more romantic story than one win, right? Perfection is overrated.
4.58pm EDT 16:58
Patrick Rodgers is denied a closing birdie when his straight 15-footer for birdie on 18 somehow lips out. So unfortunate. He signs for a 70, and while he’ll surely be a little irritated, having reached -4 at one point, a player ranked 236 in the world should be pretty happy with his day’s work once he takes a step back.
4.55pm EDT 16:55
Fabian Gomez of Argentina is making his US Open debut at the tender age of 42. In golf, all is never lost. He’s played the other three majors in the past, missing the cut every time, but this is shaping up to be different: he finishes strongly with birdies at 15 and 18, and he joins Edoardo Molinari in the very, very, very, very early clubhouse lead at -1. Elsewhere, Marcus Armitage, who effectively qualified by winning the European Open a couple of weeks ago, signs on his debut at a mere 33 for a level-par 71.
4.51pm EDT 16:51
Seve’s Special Book is full of great advice. Cabrera Bello whips high into the air from the thick rough, over the bunker to three feet, and tidies up for a wonderfully scrambled par. He stays in a share of the lead with Henley at -3. Koepka meanwhile makes his par putt on 8, no more than that cleverly improvised chip deserved. He stays at -2, and that might be a momentum shifter having recently made a couple of bogeys, and with a par-five to finish.
4.48pm EDT 16:48
Back-to-back bogeys for Patrick Rodgers at 16 and 17. That follows the dropped stroke at 14. Three shots shipped in four holes, and from the top of the leaderboard at -4, he’s slipped back into the pack at -1. Meanwhile Francesco’s older brother Edoardo is back in the clubhouse having shot a very fine 70, something that didn’t look on the cards when he’d doubled 6 to drop to +3. But he nearly aced 8, his tee shot stopping 11 inches shy of the cup, and kept it going in the right direction from there. A great day for the Molinaris so far!
4.44pm EDT 16:44
Birdie for Francesco Molinari at 16! He’s not had much of a season, having struggled with a back injury, so it’s good to see the 2018 Open champion back to something near his best. He’s one off the lead at -2, alongside Brooks Koepka, though for how much longer is a moot point. Koepka dumps his tee shot at the par-three 8th into deep rough beside a bunker at the front of the green. He’s forced to stand in the trap, three feet below the ball, and grip down on the shaft. He manufactures a sensational chip to six feet, quite the result from there, but that’s still a tester to scramble his par.
4.38pm EDT 16:38
This par-three 3rd is one hell of a hole, the wind getting up to all sorts of mischief, grabbing the ball and throwing it this way and that. It holds Cabrera Bello’s tee shot up so much that it lands shy of the bunker guarding the front of the green. Chipping from thick rough and with not much green to play with, that’ll be quite the up and down from there. Time to dip into Seve’s Big Book of Escapes, issued to all Spanish golfers the minute they show an interest as kids.
4.34pm EDT 16:34
Koepka doesn’t get hold of his second from the gallery down the left of 7. Short of the green, he duffs his chip, and ends up with a second bogey in five holes. He’s -2. Heading in the other direction, Rafa Cabrera Bello, who follows that lovely chip-in for eagle on 18 with birdie at 2. He grabs a share of the ever-changing lead. Just a dozen players are currently under par, which is only right at a US Open.
-3: Henley (16), Cabrera Bello (11*) -2: Rodgers (16), Koepka (16*), Fitzpatrick (14), Schauffele (14*) -1: E Molinari (17), Wolff (16*), F Molinari (15), Hatton (14), Kokrak (14*), Hadwin (12)
4.30pm EDT 16:30
Thanks Will. I’m back just in time to see Matthew Wolff run up a double from that awful position down the right of 7. His round is nothing short of absurd: 16 holes played, eight birdies, three bogeys and two double bogeys. Just three pars. The vicissitudes of the US Open, ladies and gentlemen. He’s still -1, mind, just a couple off the lead.
4.24pm EDT 16:24
Koepka pings his tee shot into the fans, landing next to a man eating a burrito or something similar. He might not be in the lead by the end of this hole. Anyway, Scott is back and knows stuff about golf.
It is a three way tie at the top.
-3: Koepka, (15) Henley (15), Wolff (15*)
4.20pm EDT 16:20
Wolff at the seventh finds a tree, which is ill-advised. On the upside it bounces in the right direction for him, rather than end up in the penalty area. Fleetwood plays a stunner from the fairway within a few inches of the hole. He is looking in decent nick when not on the tee.
Schauffele goes back to -3 with a lovely putt from the edge of the green on five. Four sit in joint lead now.
4.15pm EDT 16:15
Justin Thomas is a perfect shot just to the left of the fairway to a few yard from the hole at the sixth. Koepka’s shot from the other side of the fairway goes just beyond the hole, which is a decent result for him. He cannot drain his putt for a birdie, however, to take an outright lead. Thomas does birdie the hole.
From Wiki: “The basic (and most popular) version of Hamburger Helper is a box of dried pasta with seasoning that is designed to be cooked with ground beef. Hamburger Helper offers a variety of flavours, including Lasagne, Cheeseburger Macaroni, Bacon Cheeseburger, Philly Cheesesteak, and others.” Sounds awful.
The joint leaders
-3: Koepka, (14*) Rodgers (15), Wolff (15*)
4.06pm EDT 16:06
Wolff gets a par 4 on the on his 15th hole of the day to stay in joint lead. He looks in pretty confidence mood, too.
4.04pm EDT 16:04
Koepka on six sends the ball to the right of the fairway but he’s not in a bad position as that rough is reasonable.
Updated at 4.04pm EDT
4.03pm EDT 16:03
Paul McGinley arrives eating his lunch. I hope it’s Hamburger Helper.
4.01pm EDT 16:01
Koepka goes out of the fairway bunker on five. He ends up with an extremely long putt which goes closer than many expect but drifts wide of the hole.
Wolff is getting better by the hole, as he whacks a perfect drive down the middle on six. Fleetwood follows in his footsteps to find the fairway for only the fourth time in 12 holes today, which is frankly underwhelming. Fleetwood then hits it into the rough just off the green, he seems to enjoy making things hard for himself.
Cabrera Bello plays a stunning chip out of the rough and into the hole on the 18th for -2.
3.48pm EDT 15:48
Up close and personal.
Xander Schauffele reads the lie on the 18th green. Photograph: Marcio José Sánchez/AP
The leaders: -3: Koepka, (13) Rodgers (14), Wolff (14*)
3.44pm EDT 15:44
Schauffele gets himself out of the bunker with a fine shot. Mickelson is also in the sand, but he has no issue extricating himself either. Someone with issues is Fleetwood who chips from one bit of rough to another, much to his chagrin. Schauffele fails to get par as his putt kisses the rim on 11 to remove him from the top section of the leaderboard. Wolff becomes joint leader in Schauffele’s place.
3.39pm EDT 15:39
Ancer nails a decent put from distance on 11 to secure a par. You’ve got to make sure you’re in fine putting form when the wind is playing havoc with drives.

Ramblings: Update on Pastrnak and de Haan; Silfverberg; Toews; Trocheck – March 19
The big injury news from Monday was that David Pastrnak was skating on the top line for the Bruins in practice as he returns from an arm injury. He’s officially a game-time decision for Tuesday’s contest. Though the team has just three games over the next six nights for fantasy semi-final week, getting the Czech superstar back in fantasy lineups will be a huge boost to any fantasy roster.
The Bruins also had a quartet of injured players skate on Monday as Kevan Miller, Marcus Johansson, Torey Krug, and Matt Grzelcyk all hit the ice before practice. The latter did so without a stick as he continues his own recovery from an arm injury. There’s no confirmation of an immediate return for any of them, but Johansson in particular could help in H2H playoffs next week – aside from Krug, who is already rostered in almost every league – as the Bruins have four games and they include the Panthers, Rangers, and Red Wings. We’ll update further when we get more news.
*
Calvin de Haan returned to practice for the Hurricanes, having missed the last few games after taking a stick to the face. There is no apparent long-term injury here which is fantastic news for de Haan. He hasn’t been much use outside of deep leagues this year and I don’t anticipate this will change over the next few weeks.
There’s, uh, also this:
De Haan just said after he took the stick to the eye he was poking around his eye socket making sure his eyeball is still in place because he didn’t want it dangling around and he couldn’t see a thing
— Sara Civ (@SaraCivian) March 18, 2019
Yikes.
*
It’s that time of year where it’s hard to pay attention to the dregs of the league, but it’s worth noting that after his current recent hot streak, Jakob Silfverberg is up to 22 goals on the year. He needs one more to tie his career-high of 23 in 2016-17.
I will say that while this is pretty cool for Silfverberg, this is kind of disheartening for fantasy owners. I don’t think I’m the only one who was waiting for the 28-year old Swede to have *that* magical season where he posts a high shooting percentage and explodes offensively. Because he does currently have the highest shooting percentage of his career (15.2 percent) by a wide margin (previous high of 10.1 percent in his 23-goal season). But he’s missed some games due to injury and the team was terrible and injured basically up until a month ago, and that has kept his assists to a minimum.
*
After spending some time on the top line in the team’s last game, Rangers forward Pavel Buchnevich was bumped down to the second line in practice on Monday. He was a guy I thought could do very well moving up the lineup post-trade deadline and he does have 5 goals in 10 games (no assists, though). In 33 games in calendar 2019, Buchnevich has 11 goals and 19 points in 33 games, which pro-rates to 27 goals and 47 points over 82 games. He’s done this while playing less than 14:30 per night in that span. I will continue to bang this drum until it happens: Buchnevich is on the cusp of being fantasy relevant in all formats, he just needs a coach to give him the consistent minutes.
*
This is more for the postseason than anything but Mats Zuccarello is expected to start practicing with the Stars on their next road trip. The problem is the next road trip is next week and that won’t give Zuccarello many, if any, games to get up to speed before the playoffs begin.
*
James Neal was skating at Flames practice on Monday though at this point, I don’t think he’ll be much help in almost any format. This is really just news for the DFS people out there.
*
Some people may be disappointed with Colin Miller’s fantasy performance this year, and I get it, but let’s step back for a second.
Before the season, Miller had an ADP somewhere between the 40th and 50th defenceman off the board. In standard Yahoo! leagues, as of Monday afternoon, he’s the 49th-ranked defenceman. Considering both draft investment and performance, there really isn’t much lost here.
Beyond just his fantasy ranks, he’s been a bit unlucky. He sits at minus-1 on the season but has received .909 goaltending behind him at five-on-five on a team that sits at a .916 overall. He’s still been one of the best play drivers so there’s not much concern of a rebound there so long as he gets better goaltending in 2019-20. He’s also shooting less than half his career average (5.9 percent) this season (2.5 percent). If he shoots anywhere near his normal rate, he’s pretty much in line with his double-digit goal production rate from last year.
In short, Miller has been about as expected this year, if a bit on the unfortunate side. He’s firmly behind Shea Theodore in the pecking order now, though, so I wouldn’t expect his production to pick up next year. He’s about a 35-point guy and that’s just fine.

Our Dobber Hockey fantasy playoff draft list is now available for pre-order in the Dobber Shop here. It is an invaluable resource for those participating in any sort of playoff league, be it fantasy, pools, or just picking teams.
*
Just wanted to extend a hearty welcome to Chris Wassel, who is joining the Dobber Prospects team covering rising stars from the New Jersey Devils. I’ve known Chris for years and if there are two things he’s fanatical about, they’re fantasy hockey and the Devils. If you’re a New Jersey fan, be sure to check out the Dobber Prospects pages from time to time to read Chris’s work.
*
I know some people are concerned about the Nashville Predators heading into playoffs given their perceived lack of scoring but I think it’s a bit overblown. At five-on-five this year, the team has scored 2.58 goals per 60 minutes, 12th in the league and sandwiched between Vegas and Winnipeg. Combine that with the best blue line in the NHL outside of maybe San Jose and this team is just fine. The power play is an ongoing issue, of course, but I’d rather have a team struggle to score on the PP than 5v5. Having all their players healthy for an extended period may help in this regard. The West has a lot of very good teams, even if the Predators are bounced in the second round it’s hard to say they’re failures.
*
It’s gone by fairly quietly, but it’s worth noting that Jonathan Toews has cracked both the 30-goal and 70-point plateaus for the first time since 2010-11. Scoring is up league-wide so players posting great years compared to recent seasons isn’t usually noteworthy, but Toews hadn’t cracked 60 points, let alone 70, since 2014-15. He’s currently on a point-per-game pace – heading into Monday night’s game – and if he can maintain that, it’ll be the first time in his career he’s accomplished the feat.
Sure, Toews is shooting 15.2 percent, and that’s a three-year high, but it’s not abnormal for him. He has five different seasons over 15 percent shooting and was never below 12.4 percent in his career until 2016-17. His 20:52 per game and having line mates who score are really helping Toews’s season here. His on-ice shooting percentage, or the rate at which the team scores with him on the ice, is just over nine percent and his Individual Points Percentage (IPP) is well within his career norms. In other words, Toews isn’t really getting lucky this year. It’s a good scoring environment and he’s getting loads of ice time. Something to remember for next year.
*
Steven Stamkos became the Tampa Bay Lightning’s all-time leading goal scorer by tallying his 384th goal with the franchise in Tampa Bay’s 4-1 victory over the Arizona Coyotes. That was his 36th of this season, giving him a chance to crack 40 goals for the first time in four years. Maybe he’s not the player he was five years ago, but he’s still pretty good!
Yanni Gourde scored an empty net goal, which was his 20th goal of the year. He hasn’t been able to follow his breakout season last year, but getting the 20-goal mark is no small feat. I do wish he would shoot more, though, as he’s going to finish under two shots per game again this year even playing 16 minutes a night.
*
More updates in the morning
*
He was injured for about two months and that will probably frustrate his fantasy owners, but even in a shortened season we’ve seen the levels of production that Vincent Trocheck can bring. He’s averaging over two hits per game, about 2.7 shots per game, would fly past 50 blocked shots had he played 75 games, and sits with roughly a penalty minute per contest. Perhaps the point production is a bit lacking but it’s worth noting his current shooting percentage (5.8 percent) is about half his three-year average from 2015-18 (11.4 percent). If you double his current goal total to account for the shooting percentage drop, he’s up to 0.31 goals per game coming off three seasons of 0.33, 0.28, and 0.38 goals per game. In other words, things are pretty much normal here.
It’s just a reminder that in multi-category leagues, Trocheck should still be considered one of the top options available. He’s lost nearly 90 seconds per game in ice time and is still just a shade under 20 minutes per night. The Panthers centre also doesn’t turn 26 until July. He’s a name to stash away somewhere for drafts in 2019-20. The injury-shortened season combined with an unsustainably low shooting percentage will guarantee a depressed ADP compared to 2018-19. It is exactly the type of situation savvy fantasy owners should embrace in the search for draft value.

I want to hear from Casey Mittlestadt keeper owners. What do you think of him this year? Are you happy to have him on your dynasty/keeper league rosters? Are you concerned about him not having talent on the wings to play with or are you taking a longer view? Is there anything that’s stood out about his game you’ve liked or disliked this year? Hit us up in the comments.
