There was a grit to their son though that both his parents had lacked. A bite. It came out in Lily’s protectiveness, in James’ sense of fair play. A longer fuse than either had ever been blessed with — but a more explosive temper, once it was burned through.

He was grateful not to be on the receiving end this time. His nose could only take so much abuse.

Writing update (?) of sorts:

I've opted to tackle the problem of "why are there too many cooks in this kitchen" by backtracking to the moment when the third (conscious) character entered, and determined that actually, I would like a longer period of the first two characters talking to each other in relative private. We don't get enough of that. I then realized it worked better if I changed the order of entry for the other three in order to slowly ramp up the chaotic energy while still holding the narrative thread (which I felt like I was losing before.)

Feeling good about this change! And more importantly it's not a total rewrite so much as just heavy editing and some additions. :)

Something that comes up often in art that's about artists is that you'll be told that this character made an amazing, record-shattering, highly acclaimed book or movie or song or whatever and then you'll see the piece of art they made and it's painfully mid. Like, you have to accept that within the world of the story being told, that's the most amazing piece of art ever but you're sitting there like, "There's no way that would ever catch on like that IRL."

Anyway, shout out to KPop Demon Hunters for sidestepping that problem entirely by having the in universe songs chart so high IRL that they beat out actual established KPop groups, proving definitively that those songs WOULD have set the charts on fire and beat out their competition even as the new kids on the block.

I hate how people will look at popular indie artists who had one or two songs go viral on TikTok and start making fun of anybody who listens to them. "Oh you listen to Lemon Demon, Will Wood, Jack Stauber, Glass Animals, and Mother Mother? Tsk, don't you know that is stupid TikTok neurodivergent white transmasc preteen music? It's so mid and bad you should listen to real music–" you are a pit of misery

you ever see a character and go "wow, this character is so nuanced and morally gray! their actions and morals don't always align! they're complicated and make bad decisions and behave painfully realistically! I hate them and love them at the same time and that's on purpose! they're so cool! .... fan content is going to misinterpret them completely, isn't it."

My favorite Tolkien illustrations by Cor Blok in no particular order:

Bilbo and Gollum. Bilbo is the moon for some reason which is cool i guess

Smeagol and Deagol. I love the seaweed in the background, great attention to detail

Frodo serving Robin Hood-realness at his and Bilbo’s birthday party. Literally iconic

Isildur taking the ring from Sauron. Its great but I would like to see more of Sauron than just his hand, because I think he has the potential to look really cool

Pippin jumping into the bath at Crickhollow… no comment

Bilbo gives the Mithril coat to Frodo. Great poses, very stiff and awkward. I like it.

The fellowship. This one is a classic.

Gandalf and the balrog. Amazing

Boromir trying to take the ring from Frodo. I love the way he reaches for his sword, it looks very natural

Merry and Pippin and Treebeard. I like his legs and the fact that it looks like he’s wearing shorts.
