Meet Frey and Wynn, a pair of tarnished whose souls are linked together, as they navigate The Lands Between in search of their... destiny? Or at least figuring out what the hell they're doing here, and why they were summoned by Grace and what to do about it.

Frey and Wynn are twins born of a noble house. Wynn always had a special interest and talent in magic, something considered taboo in the time and place they were from. He studied in secret, and their family tried to keep his crimes under wraps, but was ultimately doomed to fail.

Frey joined the church and faked piety in order to become a Confessor and have pull over what might happen to Wynn when their family ultimately disowned him and he was arrested for his heresy. She was the golden child of the two, but didn't truly give a damn about the nobility of their house, or really any of her family besides Wynn.

When he was arrested, she was allowed to become his gaoler, to keep him under control as her Prisoner. It worked about as well as to be expected, and the pair ultimately defected fully and on their escape were killed for their treason.

Then... some unknown time later, the call of Grace summoned them from death and they awoke together in the Lands Between.

DHMIS Easter Eggs and Background Details

A huge list of a bunch of background details, foreshadowing, and Easter Eggs I noticed on my second watch-through. Note that I’m only including things that are fairly obscure, rather than “obvious” items others have already pointed out (so I’m not including the symbol sightings, for example). Feel free to add on with anything I missed.

Episode 1

In the theme song, Red Guy is “you”, which makes sense as he’s usually the audience surrogate character

Among the briefcase’s papers is a sticky note with 1906 on it

Right as the briefcase leaves, the last line is “you can be the ones who dig a hole for a funeral” as foreshadowing to the next episode

Everyone’s name tag in the factory has their name except for Yellow’s, which just says “employee”

When Bird is talking to Red in the office, he says that they’ve only been there for “9 minutes”. This is at the 14 minute mark and they got to Peterson’s at 5 minutes in, so they have indeed been there 9 minutes

According to the Carehound poster, Peterson’s is closed Mon–Sat and is open for exactly 4 minutes at 10 PM on Sun

Red Guy framed and hung the fax the fax machine gave him on the wall

Before the song starts the briefcase is rushing off to his job, but when the song ends he tells Brendon it’s time for his bath (as in, they’re going home). Meaning that teaching/torturing the puppets was the job he was rushing off to

Episode 2

The orange with eyes that was in the very first DHMIS short is in the BG when Red checks his ID card

The gel teacher appears as an inanimate object while Duck’s in the bathroom during the Big Day song

The tissue box says “sad squares” on it

Yellow’s red overalls from the ending of the DHMIS 6 short appear on his bed

The make your new friend box claims the new friend is not, in fact, toilet trained

The cassette that Duck plays is the same song from the end credits

Stain mentions “some people think we’re in a simulation” during their song, which references both the end of the OG series and episode 6 of this show

The shovel at the end of this episode cameos at the end of the original DHMIS 6 short as a teacher

A phone ringing is what leads Red into the office in 1, Red says you have to schedule to use the phone in 2, Lily and Todney cut the landline in 3, and there’s a phone in Yellow’s brain that Warren uses to order food

The search results on Colin include “long faced individuals in YOUR area - looking to chat!” and “long faced man VS horse - the ultimate long face showdown!”

The recipe note on the fridge says “rat shin”, “pie”, and “egg soup”

The photo in the kitchen background changes to a different photo each ep

Okokokokok I’m so excited to share these because a lot of them are so good.

I love these three so much because they feel like they were taken by professional photographers. Like these are computer wallpapers someone made or images you’d see in a calendar. Literally stunning.

This picture feels staged. I’ll say it a lot with these pictures, but the composition is so good it’s insane. It’s giving Top Gun with the sunglasses (which is maybe why I like it?) but I just think this belongs in a gallery or something.

This feels like a renaissance painting. Like actually. The painting in the background definitely helps, but it’s giving Knights of the Round Table vibes, you know? I love this picture so so so much.

It’s how the man on the left has his arm draped around his shoulder, resting on the middle man’s chest. With how the middle man is holding the newspaper while leaning back into the embrace, we can tell that this is just so natural for them. It looks like they’ve been sitting like this for hours and could be sitting like that for hours more. And the middle man is poking the man on the right, who is also leaning back against the man in the middle, maybe to show him something he saw in the newspaper? It’s just so intimate, and I’m soooo happy for them even if it is entirely platonic.

A very candid shot. Makes me feel like we were robbed of a volleyball montage a la Top Gun. I feel like Buck and Bucky would be a killer in duos or maybe a trio with Biddick as their setter? Anyway, I just enjoy pictures of the boys living their lives and enjoying themselves, because who knows how many of them made it home.

It’s silly and goofy and fun. It may just be the fact that I tend to sit everywhere but in an actual chair, but I think that looks like a very comfy spot to sit. I’m not sure why I like it so much, I just do :)

The composition of this picture is pure gold. I’m specifically referring to the way the empty chair in the middle is slightly askew and paired with how candid it feels, it’s amazing. Photographers could spend ages trying to stage photos that look like this and still not get it right. It may seem boring but pictures like this are my favorite.

Of course I need to include one of my boy, Croz. He’s not in a lot of pictures in the later years of the war which makes this one pretty special in my opinion. You can tell that he’s such a central figure in navigation without knowing who he is, like you just know that he’s the guy™️. I love this picture so much, it’s my go-to when I talk about the impact he made on the 100th BG.

Backgrounds for that freakshow animation I was going to make! Luckily, it's just the og shows backgrounds, so it's interchangeable with any au I might want to use it for.

Now THIS is a whole can of worms. I was planning on making an animatic of the song "Scrooge" from muppet's christmas carol... but with Hololive. This is a layout of the street that "Scrooge" (Irys) would walk down. I was serious about this I was planning out which members would sing which verses and shit:

FIRST ART

I made the Kraken Orb (Korb) at the end of the 22-23 season, as a commemoration, although a sort of ironic one considering i had only gotten into hockey in time for the playoffs so there are a couple players here i actually never got to see play at all before making this (Joonas, Jaycob, Burky, Fleury)

it was a whole lot of fun though! Prior to this i was in a months-long art slump after leaving a fandom, so it was a total surprise to have hockey of all things be what revitalized my art.

technically, the very first hockey art from this was Matty; you can kinda tell by the way his lines are a bit thicker than the rest since i wasn't in my groove yet. i also knew coming in that i wanted to arrange the faces in a circle, but didn't plan out beyond that, so i just made sure that i was getting a variety of head directions in my references and hoped for the best. My favorites from this are Gru, Soucy, Dunn, Schultz, Borgen, and Eeli. I think they all turned out really well.

MEAT CUT MEAT CUT

this one is fun for me because it's quite different from my usual style of art, with lineart and non-realistic forms/face. I've had the concept in my head for awhile after hearing/reading so many interesting descriptions of the physical qualities that good hockey players possess.

'Sacrifice the Body' actually came in mid-art when i had an epiphany doing something like driving my car or an activity similarly unrelated. Before that, it was going to be a lil heart drawn on the chest and the going contender for the label was 'Ferda.' which would've been great, but sacrifice the body just worked too dang well with the themes.

FAVORITE ART

i mean, c'mon. it's gotta be this one.

my magnum opus, my white whale. it came out even better than i saw it in my head and i love everything about it. when i came up with the idea, i had TOTALLY forgotten that Climate Pledge has those giant windows, so when i set out to find references and saw it, it instantly made everything even better with LIGHTING!!!!

It was my first time drawing this kind of interior architecture and although there's definitely things i would do differently now, im so so proud of how it looks and turned out. I was also still drawing through my decade-old laptop at that point, so I had to split up the work on this into two files - i sketched everything, then worked ONLY on the bg until it was about 90% done, then made a flattened copy to open as a new file to draw the players on top of.

I also have a bunch of WIP shots of it in my drafts I guess I'll throw in here now!

initial sketch to get down the composition before i remembered the window | lines of the building! i actually found a 3d virtual tour of CPA from before it was built which had the PERFECT angle, so i screencapped that and straight up traced the architecture. Ultimately, the scoreboard and the paint lines ended up getting moved around.

planning out my lighting in greyscale (i really need to do this more often, i struggle with values so much, alas) | in progress bg! at this point, the ice and the boards/glass were the only things completed. I eventually said 'fuck it' to being able to see the areas behind the stands like you could in all my references, and just put the people dots all the way up.

i had to drop the headcanons that's been eating up my mind bc the other day while i was taking my mock tests, my mind kept drifting off to the couple. lol. so here's a list of headcanons i had as a reader, from all the different bits of the story and the things you told us. hehe. these are mostly 'soft moments' as asked by you in that ask ( i wish i could drop the reference links, but i'm on my phone so it's hard to operate dually. however, i shall say which parts inspired what brainrot : they're from your works )

if she loves her things organized, i can see— during the beginning of their dating life, tae'd come over on a random weekend, only to find a!oc cleaning up, in her most natural state, and the mundane aspect of it would melt him. why? bcos he's the been there, done that sort of person, but not when it comes to these things. the domesticity, i mean. hehe.

also, the fact that she trusted him enough to show that side of her? :') the only reason she wouldn't stress about her look is bc she's adorably engrossed in her work and NEEDS IT DONE AND HE SAW HER IN OTHER STATES TOO 🫠

this one is also from initial years. i think if she were to ever get injured in any way or had a scar—however minor, he'd still spend hours on those spot/s, kissing & hating himself for not being there when it happened. also, i think if she didn't tell him about such a thing/things bc it's not an issue to her, because he had sm going on according to her and didn't wanna pile on— he'd be upset. can see her making jokes about it since it's nothing to her, and him glaring at her with swimming red eyes ( just like the wedding drabble where he threatened her to never leave him ), and making similar threats to his favorite girl ( mid-lovemaking ) ☹️

you often write that before meeting her, tae's biggest flex in bed was composure. so i can literally see him shortcircuting (even during the roughest rounds), hearing her say the most loving things and her unadultered affection. the holds only bared by his urge to take care of her first like you always say.

also, i think when he first introduced her to his world of ruined tango, he was more concerned about her, than a!oc herself. can see him internally worrying, but she is the type to want it harder and more, anyway, to his constant surprise 😂 no, but seriously. suppose it's waxplay, and he knows what he's doing bc he's a pro, but it's still his a!oc 😭 no matter how much lust and control is swarming around them, his need to smear his affection on/inside her is REAL! ever love someone so much that even being balls deep in them isn't enough bc you wanna consume them whole??? and merge with their soul and being??? that's them, and it was novel for him. right?

this ask just made me look more into Imoen because i can't honestly tell you a lot about it.

i understood before that the whole issue was that Imoen and the player character were both raised together with the same adoptive parent, so yes, a romantic relationship between the two of them qualifies as a incest. i was never into BG so i don't know the lore. but i googled "imoen baldur's gate incest" and this comes up:

basically Imoen and the player had the same parent, a deity that takes on many forms to procreate itself, and they only knew about this much later in life, so they didn't grow up thinking of each other as any kind of relative and you could maybe make the argument that since they only share "divine blood", it's no our blood and therefore they aren't siblings on a traditional sense. if you only see them as childhood friends then you're wrong for that, but they're sibling on that "divine" sense. more than that, the reddit thread where i took that from (https://www.reddit.com/r/baldursgate/comments/142baot/thoughts_on_imoens_relationship_with_gorions_ward/) mentions that there are in fact two romance Imoen mods. one of them seems to be just for the incest fetishists, or at least that is the general impression i'm getting. the other one is more tame and actually gives Imoen more character, with the added option of you just having her as a friend rather than as a partner.

i have no idea which one is the one LO is going with, but i can take a guess. if actual fans of the franchise can come to give their piece and explain this, that would be great.

so i reread the scott pilgrim comics this week for the first time since 2019? lots of stuff happened in my life in-between + i learned to actually like, pay attention when reading so this specific reread felt really important to me- the issue of reading it in french for the first time aside. heres some misc thoughts i had while reading! some of this stuff is drawing from conversations about the comics ive had with people over the years, i dont mean to break any new ground here, and i dont have a specific lense to look at the comics through so its not structured like analysis either. full thoughts under the cut! i hope you all like going on this little trip with me ^-^

so first of, the X motif! this i KNOW i saw someone else talk about. it comes up first on scott's jacket with the X-men patch (and it comes up again in that context- "then wolverine is crucified on a big X") and also on knives' scott-shrine, her dad slashes an X over scott's picture. these are the two biggest exemples but there really are Xs constantly in the imagerie of the comics, which is great and i love. the comic is about fighting ramona's exs, and this is foreshadowing that scott himself will be one, but its also generally about the baggage that comes with existing. at its core its really comics about dealing with whats over, so we get into scotts relationships w envy & kim & knives (& ramona), but we also get into his relationship with lisa (what couldve been) we also see him move flats (the end of an era!), in volume 1 scott tells knives about the house he grew up in that now belongs to another family, scott breaking his bass & no longer being in a band, etc. theres sooooo many flashback sequences in these comics and references to the past… its all about the X.!

loosely related in the foreshadowing department there are genuinely so many background details of stories about people who dont matter to the comics that foreshadow later developments. the details of why Crash & the Boys changed drummers is straight up the dynamics of Clash at Demonhead, theres the Lucas Lee movie on the BG thats visually identical to scotts memory of when he got with kim- and the reveal that the lady in that movie wasnt dead is arguably foreshadowing for scott reviving in volume 6? if you know whats happening in the story, rereading the volumes really is so rewarding. it also helps on a first read cause unconsciously its not the first time you're hearing about these ideas so theyre easier to digest & accept. this is also what the character explicitely referencing what will happen later is for- "i wonder how the Boys & Crash can do music without instruments- maybe it will be relevant later in the evening" "i'd need a deus ex machina to beat todd", these help you accept when these things do seemingly "come out of nowhere" later in the scene (and poke cheerful fun at it lol these are fun comics)

a personal fave of mine is the phrase "read the comic sometime" thats repeated in the early volumes at characters who werent there for something. its 4th-wall breaking, its fun, it nicely tells lost readers where to head to without re-dumping exposition, AND it helps keep track of who was where for what scenes … stuff like "when did stacey & ramona become friends??" or "i cant believe this is stacey & neils first meeting!" or "wallace was already introduced to ramona earlier" … its all fun and helps you stay on the ride. i think this is why i would read the comics back to back to back to back and retained very little. its easy to passively read these comics and its not a bad thing! though it is better to actively read them, and take these notes as fun jokes & reminders, and not life boats.

the 4th wall breaks are also great for the side characters having their own lives in the background. there are a lot more time indications in scott pilgrim than i remembered, if youre paying attention i think its really really easy to have a nice timeline in your head. but when stuff is broken to scott its not "i started dating mobile during X month" or "i came out X months ago" its "i started dating mobile during volume 3" and "i came out during volume 5" that way the reader can more easily relate it to the story that was happening at the time- and to keep in mind during a volume reread. its not a writing technique for EVERY comic, but its something that scott pilgrim gets to have BECAUSE its a comic- and unapologetically so! this is not a work that wants to be more novel than graphic to be taken seriously. its a comic, and its silly, and its also a work of art, and you have to respect it on its own terms.

theres also, uhm, ill be quick on this point cause its kind of weird how lesbians/sapphics are handled in the comics. its not BAD but theres clearly a bias towards male homosexuality being fleshed out and lesbianism not so much. but so the start of volume 4 is when kim & knives make out and it really starts this obsession in scott about this thing he cannot tell anyone about but is still thinking about, that prepares for roxies introduction- ramonas ex girlfriend. that i believe is also when wallace first asks if scotts broken out the "L-word" yet and it gives more context to scott assuming its lesbians? and him then going all "why does everyone keep asking me about lesbians!" but it is also kind of weird re: lesbian fetishism (which IS pointed out with scotts weird poster that no one likes but thats it). and all that with ZERO canon lesbians! roxie is pretty bi-coded i would say with her insistance on being "HALF-ninja", but ramona is described as an american ninja in the early volumes so its kind of loose. idk its weird and i like to think julie came out as a lesbian cause stephen & her being a comphet4comphet couple is really good to me

a thing id never noticed before is that julie was suspecting stephen of having views on knives during volume 4? and its why she was so shitty to knives for a while there, and then its "worked out" at the end of the volume. this feeds into the constant fear of cheating during the story, theres of course todd & scott who do cheat, but also more grey areas of relationships. im thinking of ramonas anxieties around lisa, and when scott finds out roxie stayed over at ramona's. about stephen too, his response to julie apologizing for being jealous of knives is very… uncomfortable

"i have nothing to fear!" "right yeah..." surely because hes starting to realize hes gay, and possibly because he's already vaguely started seeing joseph. we dont get more details on his relationships i am not going to accuse him of cheating LOL. i truly dont care. but its an anxiety that comes up again and again whenever relationships are starting to turn sour- "are they cheating?" and having been in my 20s for a little bit yeah i get it. scott not telling ramona about his job- not telling her much of ANYTHING during vol 4- and ramona not sharing much either are also part of this. theres a reason all of this happens in volume 4, and next volume ramona finds out scott cheated on knives with her. loss of intimacy and the breakdown of dialogue is all part of cheating anxieties, whether there is actual cheating or not. "what do i not know? what else are they keeping from me? they dont talk to me but they talk to them? are they cheating on me?"

theres a really neat thing the comics do to show the breakdown of scott and ramona's relationship in volume 5 and its the scene where ramona goes shopping and scott tags along. she spends it not saying anything (until she tells scott she doesnt even like his band) and scott obsessively talking about his comics (X-men!) while she doesnt look particularly interested.

this is the scene where scott breaks up with knives again!!! the roles are reversed, scott is now the one talking about whatever while his girlfriend's unresponsive, and obviously ramona doesn't break up with him here and there, and they dont kiss in a goodwill, but the ressemblance is there. and like with the knives breakup scene, we have a good date variant of this! its their very first date from the first volume where scott does mostly talk about himself but ramona is having fun joking with him. here we are shown their relationship slowly crumbling and it lays the ground for ramona leaving at the end of the volume.

similarly to how scott battles all of ramonas evil exs (himself included), ramona does face all of scott's own exs. its not as spectacular but we see her fight knives in volume 2, then she fights envy in volume 3. we also have her comment on kim that she does like her (same with lisa, who is not strictly an ex but emotionally is treated as such. especially with how scott sleeping over at lisa's is paralleled with roxie sleeping over at ramona's) these are not comments she makes about stephen or julie, for exemple, its specifically women who had a close relationship with him. and uhm ramona also comments on liking wallace who- again- is not STRICLY an ex, but hes also part of that volume 4 cheating anxieties conversation, wallaces incessant flirting, mobile himself jokes (?) about finding wallace in the arms of another man, etc. but most convincingly to ME because we are talking about EXs here is the flashback of wallace inviting himself at scotts house being identical to lisas scene of inviting herself at scotts, scott saying the story of how he ended up living with wallace is "somewhat gay", and the general college flashbacks.

i think this points to scott & wallace having briefly dated in the past, or (because hes paralleled with lisa) having a "what couldve been" relationship where they didnt make anything of it and now the time window's passed and emotionally? kind of feels like an ex. and if anything they ARE ex-roommates lol. this is not a scollace truthing thing, im a firm mobillace guy ok -_- im just saying its there. back to the point of ramona facing scott's exs as well, YES i am including herself in it. her going to the wilderness during vol6 parallels scott going to the countryside, the very place he faces negascott properly. and the way ramona talks when she comes back its easy to see that she did face herself on that trip. & the figurines agree with me that the idea of a negaramona does exist :)

thats more or less all i had in mind, i also feel like i was finally able to properly enjoy the themes of the comics of facing your own shittiness and doing better, of the harms of being stuck in your own head, of never ending up like gideon (who is so attached to his exs that he literally cryogenizes them!) the warning of rewriting your own memories (or at least biased recollections of it) uhm how breakups suck! and how cheating is not always black & white but also fucking sucks !! being out of school (wanting to go back to school?) and looking for jobs- and yes if scotts life had a face i would punch it too its literally unfair how easily everything goes for him on that front, even freeloading with wallace (<- jealous). envys obsession with a guy who is so obviously shitty but who shes been best friends with since they were 11 is also kind of… ooh i get it now…. its yeah. i think they really are comics for being in your 20s, a lot about dating? but its so generally about human relationships and dealing with your baggage, i think it is still relatable without the specific romantic relationship experience.? i love these comics. everyone read scott pilgrim if you havent in a while (or ever!!!!) and try to think a little about it as you read it really is so worthwhile. and if anything theyre insanely funny, and wallace is there!

Listen, can you tell me more about your art process? Because honestly everything from your sketches to the final product is amazing and I'm really curious to know how you go about it.

i am finally neither drunk nor hungover so i can reply to this properly! honestly, never expected an ask like this bc this is like. for the good (tm) artists. i started drawing in february, as well as this blog, and i'm still finding and changing things!

either way, what i strongly advise to think about first is a good idea and a good composition: first more important than last, but a drawing can just be hard to look at if it's not well-organized. for some reason, i like to do triangles with a detail in the center to which attention will be naturally drawn.

once i figure out what i want, i start doing multiple sketches: a very rough one with no reference and very thin repetitive lines, then a better one with references and corrections, and then a finer one, with thick strokes. here, you see the final sketch (still not lineart, though), and this is also where i put a base in the background: i find working with a white bg to be inconvenient, and it does add somewhat of an undertone.

then i do the lineart in thinner and better strokes! i'm still playing with the brushes and customizing them, but here are the ones i use rn in ibis paint:

i later go a layer below lineart and fill in the simple colors. even if i plan on making the light green later or using some interesting shadow colors, right now i imagine the lighting is simple and white. i put on the basic shadows by using the multiply layer and some dull pinks.

as you can see, i also color the lineart later with a clipping tool. frankly, by this point, the drawing looks bad. that's where i use the multiply layer again:

in this case, i added light by coloring some parts of the layer with a lighter contrasting color, but sometimes i just erase parts for really bright lighting in an otherwise dark setting, like in the beanix, kristoph and maya drawings in the first picture.

i add light with a normal layer by color-picking, and sometimes just go over the whole thing with a normal layer as well to correct small imperfections. i only use stuff like blurring and hard light layers for the candles, as i like to keep a certain roughness to the drawing.

uhh, what else is there? i do love doing a spot-the-symbolism moment like, everywhere, especially in the fey clan pieces... but i feel the most important part is painting not an image, but a character. this is why I'm so fond of painting from a live model: you don't capture a singular moment, you compile millions of images into one, this capturing the essence of the person, locking time with paint. that's, of course, not the case here, i just like to talk.

either way, just have fun with it!! duplicate your drawings to experiment, use clipping tools, learn some composition and color / shading basics, make things stand out!!

This twitter account gives me hope, he talked to this C/A in denial kenmasters and just straight up tells him that all his arguments are about semantics and pointless technically. This guy noticed his BS immediately 😂. He just went in and just asked, "why don't you just ask the publisher or devs instead?" Because that makes sense. This C/A in denial always acts like he wants to respect both sides but in reality he just wants his ship to survive, searching for the smallest detail he can use his mental gymnastics on. But rather than a shipper, he's probably more of a self-righteous weirdo who needs validation for it but he only looks like a fool. Anyway that was nice. But there's another, some rando coming in the fandom reading the OG mistranslation "her" and bashing on OP for pointing out the REAL translation. It's funny because they speak of media literacy but has 0 % about context and it's comprehension. The wrong line makes no sense when he's with tifa, the dead girl is not the only dead person they've had to loose in this game (IT'S A LOT), and she has no relation to the line "over the mountain" that's a tifa reference about her mom aka meeting the dead people, and also her OST is playing in the bg. Gosh, if they know how wrong they are they would freak out.

I get it now how ANY supporters of C/A really continue to ruin the game. SENA included (gosh those posts FR and ENG by manu) continues to live on the things the OG development failed to deliver. And when the devs fix that stupid line and show that Cloud was never talking about Aerith like it was some romantic declaration while hugging Tifa and while her theme plays in the BG, they might finally get it through their fat heads that Aerith isn't most important to Cloud and never was.

obviously it's early yet and there have only been 2 episodes but so far i am underwhelmed by the percy jackson tv show. thoughts behind cut (i guess very mild spoilers but nothing big)

mostly b/c every time it uses cgi fx the lighting gets DULL AF and terrible and i am begging disney etc to just pay for lighting people and practical effects/mixture of cgi and practical so it can be lit properly and not rely on making everything dark to hide shitty looking composition with weird flattening color grading (the actual models don't look that bad, they're just badly composited. like let a dramatic rim light enter your life, fam, i am begging you).

The props also look a little cheap? Esp in the capture the flag war scene, they all look/sound like plastic with little to make it seem like they're not (also the fit on the helmets was kinda meh, but i realize this is nitpicky).

it just added to making the show look cheap in a way it def shouldn't be b/c the mouse has so much freaking money. idk, it feels like they got a meager budget for a thing that deserves a GoT or at least a Mandalorian/SW budget tbh (orrrrrr i wish they'd just done a cool animated show in the style of the opening/closing credits but obviously that would be more expensive and the house of mouse are cowards T.T)

also the writing has been a lot of "tell instead of show" exposition so far which makes for not so great tv (it would have been much cooler to see the luke/thalia/anabeth bg stuff as a flashback instead of just having luke explain it on screen- stuff like that. Which is probably a budget/direction issue and less of a writing issue tbf). More characterization in general- like it just feels a little rushed like they were trying to hit major plot points faster (esp with the inter god house relations).

It also feels like someone told Jason Mantzoukas to dial it back and so he feels weirdly restrained as mr.d (a very strange choice imho). Like you hire him to be loud and a little obnoxious and i'm not sure about this directing choice for this character (this is sort of minor but it contributed to the first 2 eps feeling overall kinda muted?)

Book 1 is the weakest book by far tho so probably season 1 will be the weakest since it's an adaptation of that but I thought maybe they'd be able to fix some of the issues since Riordan has more direct control over that with this adaptation. Like move some plot points around/character narratives to make it a little more dynamic and make us care about more of the main characters sooner.

it also feels like it's missing a little bit of that rick riordan is a huge classics/mythology nerd DEEP CUT references that are in the books (we got a little with that one kid talking about the goddess of failure but not really enough)

the casting is great tho and maybe it will get rolling as the season goes on, i will keep watching for sure. I'm just sad it wasn't better b/c now I'm not going to be able to convince my partner to read the books lol. He already read the Magnus Chase books which he liked, but he's afraid of the PJ books b/c the first few aren't as good/were written earlier

Haha I don’t think I have as much of a set process as you do (I like trying to emulate original styles and I sometimes need a new system when doing that), but here’s my general framework:

I’ll start with a sketch. Usually I do a couple sketch layers—like one really rough layer for planning the composition, one for anatomy (unless I’m using a direct reference), and one “refined” one—depending on the complexity (I didn’t do an anatomy layer on this one which is why it looks so wonky lol). Then I fade back the refined sketch and drop the lineart on another layer above that.

I fill the flats in on a layer below the lineart. When drawing fanart I’ll eyedrop colors from an official image and then adjust them to my liking. I usually do separate layers for shadows and highlights (you can tell I’m very layer-happy), above the flats but below the lineart. For example, when doing cel-shaded styles (like Utena) I color all the shadows with pure black and set the layer to Overlay or Soft Light, and color all the highlights with white set to Add (and reduce the opacity). If I’m blending, I’ll just use the Normal blend mode with it clipped to my flats layer.

I’ll add any background/foreground elements last, but I will do the rest of the drawing on the same color it will eventually be, to make sure the colors work. I’ll work on the BG with as many layers as necessary, but I’ll typically merge them at the end.

If the background is really complicated, I’ll first add another layer for lighting sources, perspective, etc. This is also where I’ll put my color pallete (for easy transfer to other projects), notes to myself during the process, finished date & time, etc.

The background is the most variable part for me. If there’s dramatic lighting, I’ll sometimes do neutral colors first and then tint the whole piece (flat color layer on top, set to “Color” and faded back):

hiiii im making a self indulgent ass post w/ all the fun little details i packed into tip the ferrymen pages up til today (excluding all the stuff thats foreshadowing for later spoilers) im gonna put it all under the cut though!!!

so hi. funny little bg details in ferrymen that i think is fun:

pg2 - Russel's grave! his last name, Marek, is named after an NPC in a really old dnd campaign my buddy jay ran for us back in high school

pg8 - there's a lot here so im just showing all of it LMAO. ambrosia bar back alley in the bg, one of eddie's murals is on the wall, eileen's missing poster is on the left, and as a lil spoiler: one of the ghosts in the background is gonna be a major character in arc 2!

pg20 - one of joey's drawings is of a younger nathan and the other is a blue cowboy, if you know what thats a nod to you know lol

pg20 - Eddie's gifts for the fortunes include a cat angel statue, white lillies (often used in funerals), and a blue candle. most of this is just supposed to be a nod towards who's leaving these gifts

pg33 - this is kinda hard to see due to the coloring (which i plan on going back and fixing at a later date) but the title of this book is "the wonderful world of elevators" which is a taz reference

pg37 - this is more a production fun fact but i made the eyes on the shadow creature in esther's portrait by just heavily editing a photo of my eye lol

pg37 - as eddie sneaks away from the vargas's, he glitches out which is meant to show that he's using his shapeshifting powers. foreshadowing!

pg45 - foreground detail so everyone noticed it but eddies just kinda chilling here when the vargas's enter andy's library

pg46 and pg81 - bim bim the bear's tears match esther's death injuries, he also copies joeys expressions throughout the first arc!

pg52 - the author of this book is mai's dad, arthur!

pg54 - eddie's "tell" when she's shapeshifted as someone else is that the scar over her eye stays no matter what. this isn't the only instance of this, but emily's disguise makes it the most obvious!

while we're at it-- eddie can mimic the blank eyes of ghosts because he knows they have blank eyes from watching paranathan, but he doesn't know what their death injuries like so they can't mimic them.

pg60 - the environments in sarah's station are made of cardboard cut outs, mimicing the kinda toy-like feeling of a giant train model

pg68- anime sparkles

pg71 - my favorite example of bimbim mimicking joey's expressions

pg74 - this is obvious i just really wanna point out nathan blushing when he sees how fucking tall eddie is

pg76 - when stumbling across the recreation of the murder scene, joey and eddie stare at the replica of the murder weapon in horror while nathan looks ahead at the portrait on the wall. nathan has seen this scene before back when it actually happened, it wouldn't be shocking to him but the museum of grief lizzie's made for herself would. eddie and joey, who have never seen the scene before, focus on the replica weapon.

Letters from Watson, catching up

The Gloria Scott Published: April 1993 Set: July 1874 [Baring-Gould] or (according to my estimation of the timeline), no earlier than 1875, no later than 1878, MOST LIKELY 1875 or 1876. Timeline Note that Baring-Gould puts Holmes’ birth date as 1954, which, while not impossible, seems to only have been chosen to give him wiggle room for his fan theories about what Holmes was getting up to prior to a Study in Scarlet. This won’t be the last time I look at Baring-Gould’s timeline and ask, respectfully, what the hell. The other thing about timelines is that this is a college adventure that Holmes told Watson about, sometime between 1880 and 1892 (Between when they met and several months before publication.) So it’s interesting to ask: when did Holmes tell Watson about the case that lost him his first friend at school? An entire collection of Holmes’ cases had been published by 1892. A second would be coming out in 1894, so it could be that Watson needed some material. It could equally have happened in the early days with Holmes attempting to entertain his new friend, who, as we covered last time, was not up to much at first.  Another consideration: I strongly believe that the majority of Watson’s writings fictionalized Holmes’ cases as well as sensationalizing them. Names were changed to protect the innocent and the guilty, details of the timeline were fudged beyond mere absent-mindedness, specific addresses were changed slightly, occasionally a murder weapon would be so memorable that Watson had to invent a milk drinking snake to replace it. As one does when one is on a deadline. The Baring-Gould chronology is based on weather patterns and the occasional real name of a ship or other current event, which he actually probably had better access to than me while living 1913 to 1967, as well as on his obsession with giving Holmes an heir and an affair. (Some of us are interested in neither, mr. Baring-Gould. Ask me how I know.)  Preliminary Evidence: Holmes’ student days. - Holmes says he was at college two years. This is probably misleading to a modern (and american) audience, because college did not mean an institution granting a degree attended when you were of age to choose your career. A college referred to the place where a boy was prepared to be a gentleman, finishing his general studies before moving (or not) to his professional ones. The UK still seems to have a different idea of what a “college” versus a university is, while people speaking US english use them more or less interchangeably. In the modern day, school is only compulsory in the UK until age 16, and “college” is the years between 16 and 18 where you prepare to enter university.

-Think of a prep school, or, more broadly, considering that public (paid by your parents, the exact opposite of what public school means in the US) schools that took children from ten to their late teens were sometimes called “something college” think of any middle and high school boarding school you’ve encountered in fiction.

 - That said, if Holmes is only attending for two years prior to university and he’s spending school holidays with his friends, he’s probably in his late teens. He mentions his course of study being unusual, so there’s definitely some leeway to choose his coursework, and I doubt he tested OUT of any subjects he choses to ignore... say, astronomy. - So my guess is that he’s attending some sort of prep school designed to give students an advantage in their chosen university courses, and is somewhere between sixteen and nineteen. (There’s no point in that course of study if he’s not approaching the right age to go to University.) Working back from the presumption that he’s 22 to 23 during the events of Study in Scarlet, we can assume that it happened three to five years before the winter of 1880 to 1881. 

- Baring-Gould’s timeline both assumes that Holmes is twenty (Which gives me some pause regarding my historical research into colleges: BG was both English and born closer to the time of writing so he may have had personal experience with the educational timeline of a British gentleman. Not much pause given how much his timeline is molded to his fan theories though) and that this happened six years before he and Watson met.

having been here from the very beginning i think my fave aru sekai series lore is that

• despite it very clearly being a series (it is. it IS i can prove it to u) hiiragi magnetite has never addressed it as such. the fan art tag on twitter is aru sekai bijutsuten However it was chosen via poll and was a listener created tag. hiiragima themself has yet to say anything about it being a series. if u ask them a question (for example when i asked if the charas have names) they wont correct u & know what ur talking about but nope. they dont talk about the content of the songs outside of the songs at all

• possibly not aru sekai but we'll see eventually- they decided to make a song thats one second for every like they got. theyre currently making a song thats 70,000 seconds long (like 19 &1/2 hours). they have the file name saved so that "seconds" is replaced with "illness" which sounds the same in jpn

• the content is so fucking specific every time i see other people try to translate it theyre like "this was so confusing". they are so right but also i promise u it gets 2% easier when u know the songs are related

• sena yuta does the art for the main aru sekai series songs. asa is the other illust. even tho asa tends to do art for nonseries songs (nadenna, uni, rasshaina) marshall maximizer & canon are absolutely part of the series & i cant believe i keep seeing people over look this. the motif is RIGHT THERE. canon says aru sekai de in THE FIRST LINE whats not clicking

• many songs have context as text flashed for a frame in the video background! as of right now aru sekai soushitsu, kyuuyaku hankagai, shuuen touhikou, unplanned apoptosis, marshall maximizer, canon (this ones in code) have text. oumen mokushiroku, kugutsu ashura, laboratory do not. (if u want to get technical oumen has the ou kanji to say its part of the aru sekai shoushitsu order but theres no new information in it)

• all of the songs except for kugutsu ashura & laboratory have the "nami no ne no yume wo miyou" melody from aru sekai shoushitsu worked in somewhere. if u dont believe me ill get u time stamps if u ask. those two songs dont have it but im telling u its thematic, they ARE part of the series, but i cant only really theorize on what it means until we get more songs & content

• hiiragima once said "if u dont know how to read the title of kugutsu ashura you can just call it ashura" this is especially funny bc they always put furigana for their titles in their descriptions.

• they actually do a good job of getting characterization across once u get past the technical language they use. some of them are a lot more obvious than others (unplanned apoptosis. i think this girls so funny bc its so different from everything else) but theres a lot u can get from the word choice/play once ur used to all the weird science (?) terms. sena yuta's art also does an AMAZING job of getting their characters down in a single drawing. u can tell so much from the art for real. this is a whole essay in itself im stopping here for now

• all the characters have names!!!!!! i would know i asked directly & they responded they said yes the characters have names but theyre waiting for the right moment to reveal them. every day this torments me both bc i would like to call her by name instead of saying tenshi everyday and also bc i know this means they have plot significance & im not ready to handle that

• so far all the charas in the songs are girls but if i remember correct the bg text in some songs (shoushitsu & maximzier i think? id have to double check) refers to there being at least one guy in there somewhere.

• this is just a personal note but none of these people have basic lab safety i mean look at their outfits. if the world wasnt ending they die anyway wearing that esp the laboratory chara but i digress

• in general the series is ur "the world is ending and we need to find a way to stop it from ending"typical story i guess. not only plays on destruction of the world but also destruction of the self. its not ur lighthearted easy to handle voca series if u want that may i suggest honeyworks or perhaps last notes mikagura school suite instead

• we dont have a timeline. i can tell u from context the songs arent being posted in chronological order. i have no idea what the order is ive made a guess before but its just a guess.

• theres a paragraph in shoushitsu about a swampman & hilarious as it sounds it actually describes exactly whats going on. both about how the world functions in that no two attempts are the same but also that people who lose their "self" are also The Same But Not. which is interesting to know its so thought out considering the time between songs & how hiiragima claims to just be doing whatever they want. its very cohesive. somehow.

• i have no idea why the english titles of the songs are like that on youtube. i dont know if they did that themself or not but i for one refuse to acknowledge that shuuen touhikou is called "blade" over there. girl what how did we get there u just lost soo much connotation doing that. i want to say the swords arent even a main part of the song but i dont think i can actually. anyway the "eng" titles on yt dont exist to me

• the theme used to be 5 kanji title songs were the main songs and katakana with the first repeating (ex MArshall MAximizer) were more like. sub or context songs. and then we have like canon & laboratory so idk if those are just another type of song along with the others or if they decided they didnt want to follow that anymore. i need more info but still something to note. the kanji songs also used to be sections of shoushitsu (kyuu, shuu, ou, fuu, mei, juu, mou, ei) but then, again, kugutsu ashura threw me off so [vague confused gesturing]

• rain. thats all i need to say really. very few songs that dont have rain or the color blue in it somewhere & that's absolutely intentional.

• i saw sena yuta say something about flower language in regards to the laboratory art but i never saw if they elaborated and my friend whos into flower language was having a time trying to pin point what flower it was so for now another mystery unsolved
