Reflections

i wasn't feeling very well, and i couldn't figure what to draw. i've been feeling stuck in a lot of ways lately. i put a random YT playlist on and then i looked up from the screen and saw my reflection. there's a mirror in front of my tablet. and i realized i never really drew myself without overly cartoonizing myself, or trying to alter what i see as imperfections. like asymmetry, bit of a lopsided smile. i never put much care into looking at the details, like i do with my other drawings. i never tried capturing the striking details that make me /me/, as i do with other drawings. it's kind of a weird experience, both sweet and strange, to draw yourself. as an artist, you can bring worlds and characters to life, but often forget who's the one making them. it felt very emotional to me, to draw my reflection, then flip it. sometimes, all we see is our reflection, but we never truly look at who we are on the other side of the reflection. we find beauty in everything, and in everyone, except in ourselves. we search for the details which make a person who they are, yet disregard ours. we pay attention to stay true to those details, so a person's reflection would remain unchanged, but we try to change our own. being a person, but especially being an artist, is ultimately a journey towards self love. there are parts of our self in everything that we make, in everything we create. there is an extension of us in every universe made, in every character created. we struggle to be seen, so we spill our hearts and souls into our creations, hoping to be one day seen and understood. we spill so we won't look at our selves directly, but at a reflection. always a reflection.

when we’re done with our overwhelming grief we’ll eat i guess

so today at work one of my coworkers hands me a box

I have no context for this. He’s a 50? 60? Year old plumber who tends to walk into the office, tell a dad joke, and leave. I’ve just arrived at work and am still putting my purse away. So he hands me this box and says it comes with instructions. I open it and unfold this

He says his great grandma probably made it

This pansy is the tiniest pocket in the world

It could use some blocking after who knows how many years in the box but look at these sweet little pansies!

The pattern was clearly typed on a typewriter, several pages of it. I guess this was an apron specifically for having your friends over for tea.

I just happened to be wearing a skirt that kind of goes with it, so I did wear it all day (it’s a @mayakern skirt!) and another friend said I look like I should be living in a shoe. Perhaps as some sort of mouse girl making pastries for the other woodland creatures. But uhhhhh what an incredible heirloom piece to just be handed. It’s probably twice as old as I am. I’m definitely going to bring it to stitch circle this week

rewatching one piece Again and luffy told sanji “dying isn’t how you repay kindness!” it took so much for that to sink in for sanji. he tried dying for zeff at the battle with don krieg at the baratie. he’s struck down by enel. he tried to jump in front of zoro before kuma. he sold himself to big mom. he sees his life as so worthless for too long until luffy comes to save him. he’s one of the wings of the pirate king. he’s a beloved son to a fighting cook. he is worth so much and has a home in this world and it took his whole life to figure it out. it’s insane how much luffy can heal people’s deepest traumas with his love
