Last week was utter hell, with a new class, a new schedule, and my sleep going out of whack. I'm still trying to readjust, and let me explain why I'm mentioning all of this. Almost nothing would have motivated me to get out of my zone and type this post except for Frieren. Frieren is one of my favorite manga series. If you've talked to me about anime/manga before, you would know this. So, ever since it was announced, it has been one of my most anticipated series. To add to that, Keiichirou Saitou was announced as the director. He's a great example of an upcoming new-gen director who has excelled in everything he's been a part of. From the beautiful and abstract EDs he created for The Executioner and Her Way of Life or Boogiepop, to the mesmerizing, dreamlike episodes he directed for Sonny Boy, and the expressive, now very popular Bocchi the Rock. He was a perfect choice as a director for a series like this, and let me tell you, he delivered fully.

Just from a quick glance, you can see how the show looks. Everything is eye-catching, making it almost hard to focus on one particular element because they all just look so good, and no, it's not just the chromatic aberration causing the lack of focus. The various departments responsible for compositing, the background, and the overall color design have done an outstanding job, creating a beautiful and cohesive piece of art. Seeing someone you might consider a less experienced director pulling off such a complete and harmonious experience is incredible. In terms of design, the whole show is aesthetically pleasing. It's not the experimental work you saw in Sonny Boy; it's going in a totally different direction, like a beautiful painting that should be framed on a wall.

It works very well when paired with, you know, how Frieren is as a story. The fantasy world they are in isn't an extremely unique one. You've seen it before; it's fairly typical in that sense. But that's not truly the point. The main focus is showing the day-to-day or year-to-year life of this immortal elf girl, Frieren, and how she views time, how she remembers her past. It's not an incredibly grand adventure, but with the small lens we have on these characters, it feels like a cherished moment, something that should be captured in a photo or painting. It's beautiful in a very simple way. It's not a series made for extremely large moments, I think Frieren has always been focused on a simpler view of life, much like a painting. The smaller details of such a straightforward approach are highlighted so well. The trees in the environment, the squirrels just moving around—there's so much life in each scene. It really all comes together for me like a piece of art.

The consistency lasts through all four episodes, and the staff distribution also seems fairly good, so I expect this to continue throughout the two cours. The pacing itself is perfect. I've really enjoyed how the story has been adapted to animation so far. I believe that nowadays, many anime series have fallen into the pitfalls of adapting things too quickly to capture the interest of newer viewers early on. However, the series composition for Frieren here is excellent.

This writeup might have been shorter than most people were expecting considering how amazing the anime adaptation is and how much I love the source material, but what can really be said about except just praising? I feel like even if you don't like the source material, the anime's execution is almost undeniably good. Additionally, as I said this past week has not been kind to me so my energy is a bit drained, at first I was planning to be more specific in my write up and make points more adhering to the specifics of each episode, but I didn't really have time for that. However, I will do my best to cover every Frieren episode weekly from now on. Make no mistake this is going to be my favorite series from this year.

alright i genuinely can’t think of anything else to add to this. here’s the drabble where daiki and his s/o meet for the first time. i have to wonder if anyone guessed correctly lol. anyways, enjoy!

daiki fidgeted with the lollipop in his mouth as he sauntered along through the city. the spring breeze tossed his already messy hair into his face, and he occasionally reached up to fix it again. he turned a corner and wandered into a small shop; a place he frequented when he was bored.

it wasn’t anything special, really, just a humble convenience store wedged between the massive skyscrapers. it was good for when he was short on money; stealing was never his first option, but when it came to it, this was the easiest place to snag a couple extra snacks and disappear back out into the city.

as he entered the shop, daiki’s eyes were instantly drawn to a shock of crimson among the faded whites and blues of the store walls. a pair of massive wings taller than their owner were visible above the short shelves. fuck. daiki knew exactly who those wings belonged to.

regardless, he put on his best nonchalant act and hoped the hero would leave. he was not in the mood for a confrontation over something as small as a few extra snacks. his tail flicked irritably after a few moments, and he decided to just act. clearly, he was only making himself look more suspicious the longer he idled. he knelt down to pick up a few individually wrapped snack cakes and slipped them into an inner pocket on his jacket he had sewn for this very purpose. then, he took his regular soda and chips and headed to the counter.

he felt eyes on him as he walked, but when he turned, he saw no one staring back. daiki huffed softly and set his items down to pay. he had never felt more relieved than when he walked out the door with his stolen items tucked safely into his jacket.

well, until a yank on his hood dragged him ceaselessly out of view of the main streets. he turned, but there was no person to be found. some sort of quirk, he mused, still trying to fight the force pulling him along. eventually, he ended up stuck against a wall, cursing and looking around frantically.

“pretty bold move, i gotta say; stealing in front of the number two hero like that.”

god damn it all.

a figure swooped down in front of him, and now that daiki could see his face, dread churned his stomach.

“i almost admire you for trying something like that. unfortunately, it’s my job to take care of you, so i can’t really revel in that feeling for long.”

daiki rolled his eyes. “listen man, i really never intend to cause trouble. i just wanted some extra snacks i don’t have the money for currently. is that really a crime worth almost choking me on my own jacket?”

“oh, trust me,” hawks chuckled. “i don’t intend to cause trouble, either. and it’s my bad for doing that; i didn’t think you’d be able to resist so well. it’s not every day i meet someone who knows what they’re doing when trying to escape.”

“how’d you even see me, anyway? i thought i was hiding pretty well.”

hawks smirked, and daiki definitely did not feel anything complicated in that moment.

“i made my way over to the shelf across from where you were trying to hide. you’re pretty good, and i’m sure you would’ve gotten away if you hadn’t kept glancing at me when you walked in. ‘m i really that pretty or somethin’?”

daiki grinned, matching the energy of the blonde. “and what if i thought you were?”

“you wouldn’t be the first,” hawks replied.

daiki noticed a glint of… some sort of complex negative feeling in hawks’ eyes. not that he was staring, of course.

Good golly, Miss Molly. Kazuyuki Fujita can now be one of the all-time worst IWGP *and* GHC Heavyweight Champions of all time. What can I say, besides, CyberFight love their 50+ year-old champions. I really don’t know what purpose this serves to NOAH. God I hate Kazuyuki Fujita.

So I guess Hajime Ohara is part of Kongo now. I can’t keep up with the changes in that stable anymore. YO-HEY comes good for Ohara’s old partner Kotoge, as they now fill the vacant junior tag belts. Hope this reign lasts more than a week, given the vacations of the belts the last month. One day BIG TANK Yoshiki Inamura will beat Takashi Sugiura. Super Crazy does not get to hold two promotions’ junior titles in the span of a couple of months. Masao Inoue returned to the ring in an inter-Funky-Express match.

NOAH’s next show is on Friday from Yokohama Radiant Hall.

Dragon Dia remains a double-crown champion after he & Yoshioka beat Dia’s former MASQUERADE mates in Lee & Estrella. I don’t know if DiaYoshi is the name, but it sounded good and DG-esque. Dia will now face Takuma Fujiwara to defend the Brave Gate title after Fujiwara beat his dojo class fellows. I was kinda rooting for Ryu Fuda actually. That match will be at Champion Gate in Osaka on 3/5/2022.

Naruki Doi’s Unit With No Name gets a good prelude win over Natural Vibes, as we head for that Open The Triangle Gate match, also on 3/5/2022.

HYO gets another one over on Eita, the man he deposed to turn R.E.D. into Z-Brats. In other Z-Brats goings on, after a week or so of Big Boss Shimizu beating HYO in prelude matches, and getting a direct win over KAI, now Z-Brats is starting to get one over on Shimizu, first with KAI interfering to cause Shimizu’s loss to Jason Lee on Sunday, and now a time limit draw in the opener to add some intrigue to the KAI v. Shimizu Open The Dream Gate title defense that is coming 3/6/2022 in Osaka.

The Truth Gate 2022 tour wraps up Saturday in Tsushima, and on Sunday with another streamed show from Kobe.

The COVID-19 issues for DDT continue, as Hideki Okatani has now tested positive as well. Eruption are now effectively out of the tournament – their match that was to take place today v. Yuji Hino & Yukio Naya is a forfeit, and due to Kazuki Hirata being out, the Eruption v. Hirata & Shuji Kondo match for the Final on Saturday will be a double-forfeit. Neither team were in the running at this point as it was. So today’s Ultimate Tag League show had no actual Ultimate Tag League matches on it. Yuji Hino & Yukio Naya end the League with 4 points, not in the running for the Final as that will come down to Burning v. The 37KAMIINA on Sunday for A Block.

Endo says he will beat Takeshita at Korakuen Hall Sunday, and for the KO-D Openweight title at Ryogoku. Endo also ripped MAO’s favorite Gorgeous Matsuno shirt, for which MAO swore revenge. Speaking of Gorgeous Matsuno, at age 60, given CyberFight’s proclivities towards titling up older wrestlers, he may like his chances here soon.

Misao also protested Marika Kobashi’s “graduation from TJPW” before their match.

BJW, Ice Ribbon and Gatoh Move also held shows today. There may have been even more I don’t know about.

Blue Period Anime Premieres This October, Main Cast Revealed

  A new trailer is here for the Blue Period anime, which adapts the coming-of-age manga by Tsubasa Yamaguchi. In addition to announcing an October 2021 premiere, the latest preview reveals the five main cast members.
