Peter Quill - one, right before he was abducted from Earth by Yondu and the Ravagers after the passing of his mother. Two, with his combat mask which I didn't include in the initial post.

Peter being a mundane if-not-a-little-unpopular kid who didn't have a full grasp of his identity definitely turned the whole 'alien abduction' thing into something that massively inflated his ego, even if living with the Ravagers sucked in reality. I mean, if you surround yourself with comic books and movies it's easier to see the whole ordeal as 'destiny' and yourself as 'someone destined for greatness'. Basically his issues at the time culminated into Peter Quill never really growing up, like - at all. And now he's a man-child who WHOLLY believes he's a superhero and a man of destiny and is actually incompetent at some (if not a lot) of things. Star-Lord being a loser is fundamental to me.

Also. He had braces as a pre-teen and never got them removed after going to space. It is really funny, but also is representative of how insistent he is on not dealing with anything related to his past or growing up. But it's mostly funny

Also, Rocket, Groot and Peter are roommates/co-workers buddies/the Three Stooges before the actual superhero team is formed. Their ship is NASTY DISGUSTING

Rocket would fight any man, woman, or alien who looked at you in any suggestive way, if you let him. 

When the crew is out and about on a planet, he is glued to either your hip, or right behind you.

He’s behind you because he’s blocking anyone from looking at your ass, which is actually his ass. 

He will follow you around if you have to go anywhere off ship. Not just for your safety but because he wants everyone to know what is his. He’d follow you into the bathroom you let him. 

It’s kind of impossible for him to give actual hickies, but claw marks? He will mark you up in the gentlest (or, not so gentle ;) ) way possible with those little nails of his. 

Drunk Rocket is even worse, he gets scary possessive and you’ve had to apologize to many people for him nearly attacking them. He’s growled at people before. 

One time he did attack someone. You had gotten up from the bar to use the restroom and he overheard some guys talking about you, and jumped on them without hesitation. You had to run out of the bathroom, watching him get thrown out of the bar, and seeing the men almost cowering in the corner. You couldn’t help but smile. And of course you had to go after him before he blew something up outside.

He’s pretty crafty, as everyone knows, and he gifted you a necklace with an ‘R’ on it, that he made, just in case no one knew who you belonged to. There is definitely a tracker in it.

Sometimes if the Milano is docked on a shifty planet, he has a hard time falling asleep in fear someone will break in and something might happen to you. He makes sure you fall asleep safely before he does.

Again, he is always in some physical contact with you if he can be, or as close as he can get. If everyone is relaxing on the ship he might as well be sitting in your lap. 

He lowkey (or he thinks he seems lowkey) hates when you want to do things alone. Where are you going without him? Why can't he go with you? He almost interrogates you when you get back. 

Peter often asks you for help around the ship, since you understand him as another Terran and talking to someone similar is just nice, and it makes Rocket very jealous to see you two getting along. He’s sure to let you know later…in private. 

He panics whenever the Guardians get into a fight or battle and he doesn’t see you, it almost causes him to get hurt when he’s distracted looking for you.  

Rocket isn’t necessarily a light sleeper, but he somehow, even in a deep sleep, knows when you're up and walking around, and he’ll grumble “Where do you think you’re off to, doll?” even if it’s just the bathroom. He’ll sit awake until you get back. 

There’s been a few instances where he’s grabbed your face and “You’re mine, got that?” including in public. It makes you squirm. 

He’s an ass slapper. Public, private, he doesn’t care. 

Yondu tried to flirt when you initially met, and Rocket loathed him for it. No one gets to talk to you like that, except him.. The only reason he didn’t go after him is because he was trying to respect Peter.

I don't like the Found Family trope.

There, did I get your attention? It's true, but the question is, why is Guardians of the Galaxy still one of my favorite stories in any medium ever?

Something really clicked for me with the ending of Vol. 3 (spoilers ahead, natch). The team broke up and that kind of development is usually heartbreaking, because we love the team, they love each other, now that they've found each other why should they ever part ways?

The answer is that they're a family, and that's what families do. Growing up means leaving the parents who raised you and finding a path of your own, maybe to someday continue the cycle with kids of your own, but never losing what you got from your first family. Those people, who you can't choose, will always be a part of you.

Each of the Guardians, aside from Drax, had their childhoods interrupted by traumatic events. They didn't get to finish growing up naturally, and that loss hounded them all their lives. When they found each other they began to heal, but here's what I didn't realize until the end of the trilogy: the family that they found with each other wasn't the kind that you make when you grow up. It's the kind that you grow out of.

From the beginning, Peter has shown signs of "Peter Pan Syndrome," acting like a little boy even though he's highly skilled, courageous, and compassionate. His maturity gradually began to show through, but one quirk that kept coming up was his refusal to return to Earth. No good reason for it except that he couldn't bear the reminder of his mother and he was ashamed to face his grandfather. He can handle it now because his life with the Guardians gave him the stability he needed to become a true adult.

Gamora's new incarnation doesn't need the Guardians because she found the Ravagers instead. We don't know much about them but I expect that what they did for Yondu, they'll do for her too. In the meantime, Nebula's had a few good years of being loved and now she can follow the footsteps of the Gamora who was lost, aside from falling for Peter, because that's unlikely to ever work again.

Groot's been the most fortunate, not having his youth cut short or taking any serious trauma since he sprouted. Eventually he may want to strike out on his own, but until then it's good that he can stick with Rocket.

Mantis seemed more aware than anyone of their internal struggles, including her own. Which is appropriate, her being an empath and all. She really made the boldest possible move, going it alone, and I'm proud of her. Hoping she'll make an appearance in The Marvels or something else before reuniting with Peter and/or the Guardians.

Drax is a special case and the one who I thought was most likely to die, since it seemed like his arc was all wrapped up: he had his childhood before we met him and it was his adulthood that was ripped away from him. Revenge was his entire deal and Ronan and Thanos are dead now, so what's left for Drax? Well, it turns out revenge doesn't have to be his entire deal and now I'm embarrassed I ever thought otherwise.

Rocket...oh, Rocket. We always knew that he was something other than what nature had intended, and that was on top of the nonstop physical and emotional abuse, but now it turns out he already lost the only three people who put anything good into his sad little life. Since there was nothing to salvage from his upbringing, he was the one who needed the Guardians the most, so he's the only founding member to stay. But no mistake, it matters that he's staying as the leader. He's not alone, but he's not under anyone's control, either. He knows who is now and he knows his worth.

The "don't call me a raccoon" running joke always bothered me a little but I never dreamed it would have a payoff like it did in Vol. 3. Rocket claiming his full name is much more than a nod to his comic origins. It's his understanding of where he began and the injustice that was done to him, his acceptance that he wasn't at fault for the deaths of his first companions and that he does deserve to be loved by the Guardians.

That's the foundation that lets everyone part ways without having to ask each other if this means their relationships are over. As far as I've seen, no other found family in fiction has reached this point - the team is generally the endgame, and if someone leaves, things will never be the same again.

In a real family, a good one, when someone leaves we celebrate. Congratulations on your first apartment. Good luck at college. Blessings on your union. Just remember, you can always come home again. Our arms are open for you.

Time for another subtle cue analysis from me!

Today's topic is Rocket's reactions to Gamora vs Peter in Vol 2 after they crash the ship on Berhert.

When Gamora is berating them for getting the ship wrecked, Peter wasn't taking the talk seriously and being boisterous, when it pans to Rocket, who Peter basically blames it entirely on, this is the first shot we get about how he felt when Gamora was yelling at them.

He's looking pensive, receptive, like "yeah, I guess I screwed up." he's open to the criticism, (and yes, it is fair he did set off the events of the space chase, but I think he was legitimately confident he could get them out of there unharmed without Peter's interference) but as soon as Quill tries to place all blame on him for the crash...

He's being antagonized, like 'that's how you wanna play?' And he gets defensive.

When they are leaving he looks at Peter and bares his teeth a bit, because he's still pissed at him, for blaming him for everything and calling him names.

At this point in his arc he's not sure if he belongs to the team, it seemed like a good idea when they just saved Xandar but now it's been a couple months and the high of being heroes together has worn thin and he is questioning if this is right for him. He's glaring at him side-eye style too. This causes Peter to turn to say something.

When he says, "Hope Daddy isn't as big a dick as you, orphan-boy," he is literally just saying this to be hurtful because he's been festering on this anger since the day before-- but if you watch closely you can see he's really, really just upset, and now Peter and the others are leaving him behind to do all the work on the ship, taking care of Groot and guarding their prisoner Nebula.

He is very conflicted and the main reason he's sticking it out is for Groot's sake. He remains pissed off until the encounter with Yondu because this argument with Peter never gets resolved. He has this fear that being himself, flaws included will make people hate him and Peter even drives that stake further in him with the last thing he says before leaving. "What is your goal here? To get everybody to hate you? Cuz it's working."

There's that affirmation.

jolie is a normal terran girl who is only a badass when her protective instincts are triggered. mostly she just likes to draw pretty things, including that raccoon she saved from yondu udonta's ravager vessel. also she's a mess.

physically she has pale, almost-platinum hair, long and sleek and entirely too-much. she wears it down most of the time, basically giving rocket a coronary every time she gets too near a jet turbine, till eventually he convinces her to keep it in a bun (which it is always halfway falling out of). she has brown eyes and freckles and usually wears leggings, a sports bra, and raggedy oversized sweatshirts with stupid (but often narratively-relevant) sayings on them.

pearl was lured away from terra as a child and essentially groomed to be the high evolutionary's bride (which mostly means being repeatedly broken down over the years). currently pining after the raccoon who saved her (despite their rough start), enjoying her newfound semi-independence, and learning her strengths. she's gonna be an asskicker eventually

physically, probably one of the only constants in pearl is her gray eyes. she starts out pale with wavy dark brown hair, thin, and with all sorts of rigidity in the way she holds herself. she is usually wearing restrictive or stiff outfits selected for her by the high evolutionary in shades of white, cream, or purple, made from luxurious fabrics. by our current point in the story, she has lilac-blue hair which she wears loose or in a high pony-tail, and a healthy glow with freckles. she’s starting to gain some weight and is visibly more animated and relaxed. while she is usually in leggings and a cardigan, she is always invariably wearing one of rocket’s band t-shirts (bzermikitokolok & the knowheremen os her favorite), which is basically a crop-top on her. spoiler: that girl’s gonna get a tattoo at some point, probably a big ol’ beautiful half-sleeve.

sanna orix is a genderfluxe merchant from a planet called cyxlore in the telladore system. like many cyxlorades, sanna orix recognizes the sybila nix ora, a goddex who watches over the dead and may provide them with simple pleasures to make their time in the afterlife more joyful, comfortable, and sweet. it's impossible to say if this spiritual path influences the cyxlorade culture or vice versa, but relatedly, cyxlorades tend to be a very tactile people who deeply value small and sensual luxuries: fine cloths, good food, beautiful homes and scenery, and more. sanna orix lives these values through their work as a merchant, peddling fine goods (and often, fine advice) to all her customers, whether she is on their home planet or abroad.

physically, sanna orix is bald with smoke-gray eyebrows and lashes. he has large dark eyes and a sort of nacreous, lustrous skin, almost like mother-of-pearl, in shades of gray, peach, and ivory. there is some patterning on her head, face, and body (kind of like a tortoiseshell cat). they were sweeping robes that make it nearly impossible to decipher a body-type.

anaya's wife is the owner of anaya's armoire, a luxury lingerie shoppe on sovereign. she's an extremely skilled domme and while she does have her own name, she doesn't care that we don't know it. she doesn't mind being known primarily by her relationship with her sexy, subby lover ~ and as far as she's concerned, referring to her primarily as anaya's wife in public conversations is only its own form of free advertising.

physically, her skin is a dark bronze (she is sovereign, so that skin is literally metallic-looking). her hair is similarly-colored and swept back in a low chignon. i don’t have much of a body-type in mind but i do know she tends to wear all white, black, or deep purple satin jumpsuits that are impeccably tailored.

Sometimes, you felt the eyes of Yondu's subordinates on your body. At first it bothered you. Now you don't care anymore.It was you who went after Yondu, and asked to be part of his crew. At first the captain thought it absurd. Until you show your skills. Ever since then, you've been hanging out with this bunch of misfits. They have become your family.You didn't even have family on Earth anyway. Nobody cares about you there. Now, with the Ravagers you not only feel like you matter, you really matter.

Yondu was furious. Your subordinates are a bunch of imbeciles. They made him lose an absurd amount of money, for some silly thing. "Why didn't I take Y/n? She would have done a much better job than all of them put together!"You just wanted to rest in your room. But you saw when Kraglin came to you, to get away from the captain.

"He's furious! I think he wants to rip my head off!" He spoke, you listened to him as you read your book.

"After all, why then did you lose the customer?" You said, without taking your eyes off the book. "It's just… well… look Y/n… Don't laugh!" You have closed your book. I Am very curious now. "I won't, I promise!" He sighed "Look, we weren't there at the appointed time, because the boys and I saw a library… We know how much you like books, so we were going to bring you some books as a gift…. And then we lost the time." You felt a flush creep up your cheeks. "Oh Kraglin, you guys are adorable! Thank you so much for thinking of me!" You hugged the man awkwardly in front of you, and gave him a kiss on the forehead. "Does Yondu know that's why you wasted your time with the buyer?" Just mentioning the captain's name made him turn away from you. Yondu loves you, and he is very jealous . "That would only make him angrier!" You smiled.

You had a "secret" affair with Yondu a few days ago. But everyone there, including the guardians themselves, knew you were going to be together at some point.

"Don't worry, I'll talk to him myself!" Kraglin nodded yes. Before leaving his room, he took a package out of his pocket. It was small. It fits in the palm of your hand. "I only managed to bring this." His eyes sparkled. You opened the small package and saw the leather book. It was the story of an alien town. You enveloped Kraglin in a hug.

"I loved it! Seriously, thank you so much! You're a great Kraglin!"

You popped one more kiss on his forehead before he staggered out of your room.

You devoured the book Kraglin gave you at an astonishing rate. It was on the last pages, when the door opened and Yondu entered. He is frowning. Maybe stressed.

He settled down beside her on the bed, and wrapped his strong arms around her waist. He relaxed his head into his chest. And threw a leg over yours.

You immediately took your hand to your head, to caress. "Tired, dear?" He muttered a yes. "Kraglin told you why they wasted time with the buyer?" Yondu snuggled even closer to you. "It did. That idiot!" You laughed.

He looked really tired when he asked "Honey… Can you read to me?" Without answering him, you started reading aloud. As a mother would for her child. You felt Yondu relax on top of you. He was sleeping.

You put the book on top of the dresser, and got ready with it on the bed. And then you let tiredness overcome you.

The angry buyer and the lost money were completely forgotten.

Get To Know Me pt 1

1. Were you named after anyone? My middle name is my paternal grandmother's name.

2. When was the last time you cried? I teared up a bit Tuesday night but fully sobbed was probably last Friday.

3. Do you have kids? No BUT I have a bonus kiddo in the form of my foreign exchange student!

4. What sports do you/have you played? Softball and figure skating when I was in school.

5. Do you use sarcasm? My therapist once said "I can't picture you being anything but witty and bitingly sarcastic at the slightest provocation" so take that for what you will.

6. First thing you notice about people? Generally their demeanor, I will tiptoe around people who seem mad and like they might direct that anger at me. Second, probably height lol

7. What's your eye color? Hazel

8. Scary movies or happy endings? Happy endings, I am NOT a scary movie person! I just don't like being scared like that. I love roller coasters, I love suspense but I'm not big on horror.

9. Any talents? The closest thing I have to a talent is probably writing. I'm also a pretty decent cook and baker. I was a decent actor and director back in the day but now I mostly just use those skills to be a decent public speaker. I also did speech and debate all through high school and college (so if you were on the college forensics circuit in 2008-2011 we probably bumped into each other at least once.) That's about it, I don't have much going for me lol

10. Where were you born? Texas but I don't live there anymore! I love leaning on my Texas history when writing pre-or-no-outbreak TLOU fics though lol like hell yeah I'm going to include little Texas things in there like HEB and Shiner Bock and kolache and Dublin Dr. Pepper FIGHT ME (please don't I will lose)

11. What are your hobbies? This lol But I read a lot, play a lot of board games and D&D (if you want to geek out about these things please DM me I'm so serious), we go hiking and camping a fair bit. I also love film and am going to be starting my big Oscar movie binge probably this weekend.

12. Do you have any pets? One dog named Yondu! He's a lab/pit mix and he's my baby boy, I birthed him myself. He's also incredibly stupid but he's just the sweetest dog you will ever meet, I love him. He's currently wearing a sweater because he loves being warm and he's a snuggly thing.

13. How tall are you? 5'10" (I know, I'm a giant)

14. Favorite subject in high school? English, psychology, theater, journalism.

15. Dream job? Novelist and columnist who is sometimes a talking head so I can get paid to rant about my political opinions. I was a columnist for a few years in there with some syndication when I got picked up by wire services but that's the closest I've come!
