It was an “emotionally wrenching and heart felt” performance.
“Surrounded by burning candles, performing on a grand piano and accompanied by a small orchestra of violins,” his rendition of this famous song “spoke to many of us who were suffering from the terrible tragedies in New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.”
It was just days after 9/11, when Neil Young performed the iconic song, according to a site dedicated to Neil Young News.
Although the song was banned from radio in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, “because envisioning a world where we all got along was at odds with the public demand for bloody justice,” according to Consequence, Young believed it was the right song to sing.
Pulse Magazine wrote that Young's performance of "Imagine" on the Benefit telecast was "one of those moments you never forget."
“When disaster strikes, musicians respond the way they know best: with song,” wrote Katy Waldman of Slate. “As composer Leonard Bernstein said three days after John F. Kennedy was assassinated, ‘This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before.’”
“In times of trouble and grief, there is one song that millions of people turn to for inspiration and solace: John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s ‘Imagine’,” according to writer Martin Chilton.
The “Imagine” album was released on September 9, 1971, touching “the world with its hopeful message about the need for global understanding,” wrote Sari Rosenberg.
This is a new story on the Peace Page.
~~~~~
“For nearly 50 years, credit for this song - "Imagine" - has gone to one writer - John Lennon,” according to NPR.
That changed in 2017, after Lennon himself admitted his wife Yoko Ono should receive co-credit. Lennon explained in 1980 “a lot of the lyric and the concept came from Yoko.”
“Ono's 1964 book of conceptual poetry, ‘Grapefruit,’ contained verses like, imagine clouds dripping and imagine goldfish swimming across the sky. She also contributed to the song's theme of a world without borders or religion pulling people apart,” according to NPR’s Neda Ulaby.
In an interview with David Sheff, shortly before his death in December 1980, Lennon also shared that Dick Gregory had given him and Ono a Christian Prayer-book which had inspired him to write the track. “The concept of positive prayer…If you can imagine a world at peace, with no denominations of religion – not without religion but without this my God-is-bigger-than-your-God thing – then it can be true.”
“When ‘Imagine’ was released, John Lennon said that the world was too focused on trivialities and ‘the thing we should be talking about is the violence that goes on in this society.’ It reached No. 1 following Lennon’s murder in December 1980 and entered the UK charts again in 2012 after Emeli Sandé recorded a cover for the 2012 London Olympics,” according to writer Martin Chilton.
“Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ is arguably the most loved song of all time,” according to writer Joe Taysom. “The track captures Lennon crying out for a fairer world . . . As the decades go on, ‘Imagine’ has morphed into a tragically appropriate tonic to whatever travesty is currently tearing the world apart.”
“It’s not surprising that musicians turn to this particular work in the aftershocks of tragedy,” according to Waldman. “For one thing, ‘Imagine’ is a song that musicians continually turn to, period: The Broadcast Media Inc. found it to be one of the most covered songs of the 20th century. Its simple, versatile structure has seduced and inspired hundreds of artists, among them Lady Gaga, Emeli Sande, Etta James, Davie Bowie, Pink, Eva Cassidy, and The Persuasions.”
More than 200 artists have performed or covered the song, including Joan Baez, Elton John, Diana Ross, Peter Gabriel, Melissa Etheridge, Dave Matthews, Dolly Parton, Seal, , India.Arie, John Legend, and Julian Lennon.
“The ritual arguably began on Dec. 9, 1980, when Queen covered the song at the Wembley Arena, one day after Lennon died. Stevie Wonder played it during the closing ceremony of the 1996 Summer Olympics to honor lives lost in the Centennial Olympic Park bombing. . . . In 2004, Madonna joined the ranks of “Imagine”-eers when she reinterpreted Lennon’s ballad at an aid concert for victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami.”
“Though the song was banned from radio in the immediate aftermath of 9/11,“Neil Young recognized its potency, singing it at a memorial concert, ‘America: Tribute To Heroes’”, according to Chilton. “Coldplay performed a version after the terrorist attacks in Paris in 2015. Following discord around North Korea in 2018, ‘Imagine’ was the natural choice for a group of Korean musicians to perform at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics.”
“It’s now become the go-to song when it comes to grief or mourning,” wrote Taysom. “This is down to the tangible sense of hope that rings out from ‘Imagine’ and an overriding feeling that everything will eventually be okay.”
~~~~~
“It returns to us most bittersweetly when something bad happens, when we are casting about for answers and consolation,” wrote Waldman. “The writer John Blaney called ‘Imagine’ a ‘humanistic paean for the people,’ a kind of secular prayer. Rolling Stone described it as ‘22 lines of graceful, plain-spoken faith in the power of a world, united in purpose, to repair and change itself.’”
“The song also derives considerable power from its historical context. Lennon, shot down before his time, reminds us that the universe can run ramshod over idealistic people. That knowledge makes ‘Imagine’’s plea for peace and brotherhood all the more poignant. On the other hand, the fact that the song persists, even though Lennon is gone, speaks to the enduring strength of his fantasy. If ‘Imagine’ captures the fragility of our hope after a violent or destructive event, it also reveals its tenacity.”
The legacy of the song was most perfectly summarized by President Jimmy Carter, who noted: “In many countries around the world — my wife and I have visited about 125 countries — you hear John Lennon’s song ‘Imagine’ used almost equally with national anthems.”
After Neil Young completed his rendition of “Imagine” after 9/11, reports were he “appeared to be on the verge of tears.”
Chilton says, “Decades after its original release, this popular music masterpiece, a model of simplicity, continues to inspire people of all races and creeds, offering the listener a momentary respite of hope in a troubled world, especially in the beautiful lines:
‘You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope some day you’ll join us
And the world will be as one.’”

New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/reynatis-that-cool-looking-action-game-shown-during-last-weeks-japanese-nintendo-direct-hits-the-states-this-fall/
Reynatis, That Cool Looking Action Game Shown During Last Week's Japanese Nintendo Direct, Hits The States This Fall
Tumblr media
During last week’s Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase, we learned Grounded and Pentiment, two Xbox titles, are coming to Switch, Disney Epic Mickey was getting the remaster treatment, Penny’s Big Breakaway is now available, and more. You can check out our full rundown of everything announced during the Partner Showcase here. However, Reynatis, a really cool-looking action game set in a modern-day Tokyo, was not shown.
Tumblr media
It appeared during the Japanese version of the Partner Showcase, though, and the game quickly picked up steam online, thanks to its cool visual style, over-the-top action, and music by Final Fantasy XV composer Yoko Shimomura. Despite its absence on the English version of the Partner Showcase, we now know Reynatis is coming West later this year.
Specifically, it’s due out this fall on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC via Steam, as reported by Gematsu.
Check out the Reynatis reveal trailer for yourself below for a glimpse at what to expect:
[embedded content]
“Fantasy meets reality in Shibuya, Tokyo, where magic is something to be feared,” the game’s description on Steam reads. “In this action RPG, a young wizard seeks freedom through strength, and an officer seeks to control magic and restore order. When their paths cross, a darkness that will transform the world descends.”
Elsewhere on Steam, developer Furyu Corporation and publisher NIS America write that Reynatis is set in 2024, and the Criminal Magic Response Act is an order that bars citizens from going out at night – few enforce the rule though.
“Marin Kirizumi is a wizard who grew up oppressed by others due to his magic,” the game’s description reads. “‘If you become the strongest, you’ll be set free.’ Following these words left by his father, he arrives in Shibuya at night.
“When Sari Nishijima discovered her magic, she decided to use her powers to maintain order. She follows her own sense of justice to protect Shibuya from forces with dangerous ideals and illegal drugs that turn people into monsters. Marin, who seeks liberation. Sari, who treats the oppression of wizards as justice. The story of Reynatis begins when the two meet in Shibuya, a place where cultures and ideas mix.”
Reynatis is due out this fall on PS5, PS4, Switch, and PC. It will support Japanese audio with English text.

As a Black woman, I’d wish all y’all would cut it the fuck out with the “womanface” thing. In general, I’m sick of seeing terms created off of the basis of terms used to specifically describe antiBlack racism. It comes across as “we can’t describe how women are oppressed in their own right so we need to create words that invoke the imagery of racism in order to make our oppression look ‘real’.” Which is ironic considering how I see a lot of feminists (radfems and libfems both) talking about the general tendency in conversations regarding oppression to view sexism as “oppression lite,” but then you undermine the validity of sexism as a major form of oppression by constantly using terms specific to dismantling racism to try to “legitimize” sexism as a form of oppression to take seriously.
You can’t have it both ways.
The other day, I saw a video of a white trans woman who was appropriating Indian/South Asian culture (wearing a sari and bindi) because she converted to Hinduism (Hinduism is a religion; Muslims in India and South Asia will wear a sari despite not being Hindu because a sari is strictly cultural not religious). And she’s talking about Hinduism being about joy and wearing those clothes brings her joy so she feels entitled to wearing these clothes despite not being from the culture. This person is obviously participating in brownface, but what? Also in “womanface?” It’s very similar to yoko ono and jon lennon’s bs “women are the niggers of the world” nonsense. What does that make Black women then? Nigger niggers? Niggers squared? Like wtf even is that?
It’s disrespectful to the plight of Black and brown people, and also denigrates feminism as a whole. There is a reason a lot of Black women are male identified and relate more to Black male struggles and plights than they do the plights of white women. There’s a reason Black women are going through this tradwife/hypergamy/soft life anti feminist trend rn. White feminists failure to respect Black struggles and not constantly jump to equate their issues with Black issues is something we have been complaining about since the 60s! It’s 2023, literally 60 years later, and y’all STILL can’t figure this out?????
“I too would love to know what black women think about this” really???? Because we BEEN saying the same shit for decades but you still can’t figure out how we’d feel about it? Wild!
“Non-white people” seems just as legitimate as “non-men”, which means there is no legitimacy to it. Do not define oppressed minorities in relation to their oppressor.

Jo’s Reading of the Month
🗓 July
·  Total: 18
·  📙Rereads: 0 ·  📚 Library: 8 ·  🎧 Audiobooks: 7 ·  📖 Off my tbr: 3
End of the month currently reading: Reading in the Brain by Stanislas Dehaene - Highs: I listened to ADHD hos piger og kvinder by Lotta Borg Skoglund (Danish translation from the Swedish) ★★★★★... and whoo boy did I feel seen. First chance I get I will buy a physical copy of this and highlight every relevant part for when I go in for my referral/assessment next year. Gotta back myself up as much as I can and Skoglund explained so many things so very very well. The second major high for this month was Perla by Carolina de Robertis ★★★★★. It got me confused, frantically reading, sobbing and smiling. Also I just looove Robertis’ writing... it’s so gorgeous, and melodious and rhythmic and I love that I also feel like this now, having read both Perla and The Gods of Tango. Makes me hopeful for her other books I’ve got standing unread on my shelves lol. I might even go so far as giving her the title of my all-time favourite author, if this five-star trend continues... - Honourable mentions: Freedom is A Constant Struggle by Angela Y. Davis (collections like these I rarely rate, but it was really good!) The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner ★★★★ Your Ad Could Go Here: Stories by Oksana Zabuzhko - As with most short story collections, some hit more than others, and while this one took me a while to actually read - and I do find 50+ pages to be too long for a short story (this one had two such stories) - the stories I did like were worth the overall rating of ★★★★ - Lows: I really didn’t get along with Vagabonds by Eloghosa Osunde despite having been really keen on it before starting it ★★. I also dnf’ed three things this month which were My Mess Is a Bit of a Life by Georgia Pritchett, Women with ADHD by Sari Solden as well as The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yoko Ogawa.
Balance
Are my books balanced? (how much I’ve read vs. how much that’s come in) 19 / 8
