These workshops, according to Jade and some of the other plaintiffs in the suit, take on the air of group therapy, with participants sharing their deepest, darkest insecurities with a roomful of strangers. Masters are quick to offer a box of tissues or a supportive embrace during emotional moments. At the end of the workshop, the lights dim, loud drumming music is turned on and the participants chant, weep and shout, “Who am I? What do I want?” Lucie remembers that some people walked out midworkshop, unnerved, but she and others felt as if their hearts had opened.
Recalls Lucie, “It felt like you were falling in love, only much bigger, because you weren’t just falling in love with a person, but with a community, a practice and a lifestyle, all in one. It was everything. I felt like the luckiest person in the world.”Cult experts call that lavish attention “love bombing,” a common recruitment technique. “As social beings, we respond well to people who make us feel welcome and secure,” notes Janja Lalich, Ph.D., a professor of sociology at California State University, Chico, and a cult expert. “Love bombing also tends to make the person feel more obligated to comply with requests from the group—requests to come back again, to give more, to bring friends and so forth.” The technique doesn’t work on everyone, which may explain why many people can practice Dahn Yoga without being consumed by it. “Dahn is especially appealing to anyone who is anxious, vulnerable or struggling with personal issues like a breakup or questions about career direction,” says cult expert Szimhart.
Six months into her Dahn experience, Lucie dropped out of college to dedicate herself completely to Ilchi Lee’s “vision” of spreading the word about Dahn Yoga. When her MIT tuition refund check came, she cashed it to pay for a course at Dahn’s National Retreat Center in Sedona, Arizona. “You feel good when you write the check or swipe your card,” says Lucie. “Like you just bought a present for your soul.”…

… The details of Jang’s early life are in question, and multiple efforts to contact him for this story’s publication were unsuccessful. Critics in Korea, Japan, and China say he was involved in Sun Myung Moon’s Unification Church. They point to his appearance in a 1989 student handbook for Moon’s Sung Hwa Theological Seminary as an assistant professor of theology, teaching systematic theology and Unification theology. They also cite a 2002 history of Sun Moon University praising him for helping to fund the school.
… But according to several sources with experience in Jang-associated organizations and communities, many members of the movement believed that the key event in Jang’s early missionary endeavors is not in his résumé—nor, indeed, in any written source. It was believed, these sources said, that in or around 1992, early follower Borah Lin told Jang that she believed he was the “Second Coming Christ”—not Jesus Christ himself, but rather a new messianic figure that would complete Jesus’ earthly mission. According to several former members, Lin became an important spiritual figure in Jang’s closest circles. Documents from teaching sessions indicate that Jang and his followers look to October 30, 1992—Jang’s 43rd birthday—as the precise date of the start of their own movement. Beyond that, affiliated groups including Apostolos Campus Ministries and Olivet University look to 1992 as the year of their founding.
… The basic content of these messages, both as contained in the notes and as described by former members, bears similarities to the teachings of Sun Myung Moon—that Jesus’ work was left unfinished and in need of another "Christ” to complete it. Daniel 12 records a notoriously ambiguous prophecy that refers to 1,260 days (“a time, times and half a time”), “1,290 days,” and then finally to “1,335 days.” The 1,260 days, the notes say, finished when Jesus was born, and the 1,290 days were completed when Jesus began to preach and teach publicly at 30 years of age (1,260 + 30 = 1,290). His three-year public ministry, they say, advanced the prophecy of 1,290 days to 1,293 days, but because the Cross cut his mission short, Jesus did not fulfill the prophecy of the 1,335 days. There is thus a remaining gap of some 42 “days,” which were said to symbolize 42 years. Multiple sources said that this 42-year gap was believed to have been fulfilled by Jang.
The lessons also taught a doctrine of “three Israels.” The first was a national Israel, the second was composed of Christians, and the third was constituted by the movement Jang had founded. The 144,000 of Revelation 7 was said to refer to this “third Israel,” and the Lamb who redeemed them was said to be “not Jesus, but the Christ of the Second Coming.”
Closely associated with this idea of Jang’s followers as the “third Israel” is a distinction between the “gospel of parables” that Jesus taught and the “eternal gospel” delivered to Jang. One of the lessons said, “Jesus speaks in parables to preach to us, but to the new era, the gospel will be explained more clearly, that is, the everlasting Gospel.” This “everlasting Gospel” will be proclaimed by the Second Coming Christ.

I’m Going on Vacation Again! (:
This time I’m going for a shorter time: it’s an anniversary, Christmas gift, and celebration of my graduation from my wonderful boyfriend all in one to Phoenix, Arizona in the US :) I literally have 3 more days of University left and then I’m all done! I’m leaving on Sunday for the US for a week. I’ll be taking my personal training course after I get back from Arizona, so in mid-May and I’ll keep you guys updated - hopefully people will want me as their personal trainer! (:
I’m planning to make some healthy choices in Phoenix but also won’t be upset with myself for indulging while I’m on vacation (even though I only got back from Italy 3 weeks ago - it’s been a healthy three weeks) because vacation is for enjoying, relaxing, and not stressing. Then when I get back, it’ll be back to normal! I’ll also keep you updated on that! We’re planning to do some gym workouts, some yoga by the pool and some hikes so we’ll still be pretty active!
Please comment or message me some yoga poses you want me to take pictures of in Arizona, I definitely want to expand my ‘the Nature Series’ page! Give me some ideas and I’ll see if I can do it!

10 Simple Healthy Living Tips for Seniors During COVID-19

It has been over a year since the Covid-19 pandemic changed our lives. Businesses, organizations, governments, and industries have had to make adjustments to ensure their employees' and communities' health and safety and keep their operations in order. Individually, we’ve had to learn how to cope with the new normal as well.
In addition to the frontline workers, seniors have also had to exert extra effort to adapt to the changes brought about by Covid-19. They are, after all, one of the populations most vulnerable to experiencing severe health complications from this virus. If you are a senior or have a senior loved one, you know how important it is to follow health and safety protocols to mitigate the risks of getting the virus. Although a major part of the population in the US has already been vaccinated, Covid-19 is still very much around. As such, now more than ever, a healthy senior lifestyle is vital.
Switching to a new lifestyle may not be easy for many seniors, but it is not impossible to achieve if done gradually and with proper guidance. Healthy living is about making a conscious decision to live a simpler lifestyle and devote more time to what is good for you, the people around you, and the environment. It may sound like a complex task, but it’s not as hard as it seems. As long as you or your elderly loved one are determined to commit to healthy changes, a healthier lifestyle is very much within reach.
It also helps to have a guide or some ideas on what changes you can make. Here are some tips to consider to help get you or a loved one started.
Tips for Healthy Senior Living during COVID-19
As mentioned above, switching to a healthier lifestyle means doing what’s good for you, your family and friends, and the environment. The best way to do this is to start by loving yourself a little more. Pay more attention to your needs – not just physical needs, but those that satisfy your heart and soul as well.
1. Start your day right
Practice waking up each morning with positive thoughts – happy thoughts that can brighten your day, and start it off on the right note. This positive mindset can be fostered with a simple meditation for mindfulness, or a simple yoga or stretching routine, which can help open up your mind to everything good.
Eat a healthy breakfast, the first and most important meal of the day. If you’ve been eating without thinking for the past months, it’s time to shift to healthier alternatives. Try eating some oats and more fruits and vegetables instead of just processed foods, like cereals or bread. Experiment with your options. For example, you can make fresh fruit shakes or juices. Also, make sure you’re hydrating with each meal, and don’t forget to drink water throughout the day.
If you live alone, find time to talk to your family (or friends) over the phone or online via video chat (you can ask a family member to help you with this).
If you live with your family, use breakfast as catch-up time and update each other with what’s happening in your lives. Consider avoiding the serious stuff, though, such as politics and even Covid-19-related issues, as these can be unpleasant breakfast table topics. Try to focus on more light and fun stuff.
2. Set aside 15 to 20 minutes a day for exercise
Your early morning yoga should not be your only physical activity for the day. You need to exercise regularly to keep your muscles moving and to help improve blood circulation as well. You can walk your dog around the neighborhood (and don’t forget to wear your face mask in crowded areas) – or in your garden/backyard if you want to be safe. Around 15 to 20 minutes of brisk walking every day is a great, low-impact form of cardio.
You may also want to try going on the stationary bike or treadmill or a stepper/elliptical trainer for some low-impact cardio workouts. Don’t overwork yourself, though. This activity is more suitable for younger seniors.
An important reminder: always check with your doctor or therapist first before starting any exercise or physical activity. Also, don't forget to do some stretching before and after every workout.
3. Focus on a new hobby or new project
Staying at home will never be boring if you know how to keep yourself occupied. One of the best ways to do this is to start a new hobby or project. A good example would be creating an indoor or outdoor garden.
Plants are emotional boosters that are calming. Planting can help improve your self-worth and self-confidence. It is also satisfying, adds aesthetics to your home, and provides a healthy and safe distraction.
Another idea would be to do arts and craft projects using recycled materials (so you won’t have to buy stuff – and you can help the environment). For example, you can turn used bottles and other similar containers into spice or condiment organizers and décor. Used cardboards and shoeboxes may also be converted into home décor, photo frames, office organizers, or storage boxes.
4. Embark on home improvement projects
Rearrange a portion or several areas of your home. Limit your activity to the smaller, lighter stuff. Do not attempt to carry furniture or anything too heavy for you. Remember, your health and safety are your priority.
Make your home green. There are simple ways to do this. You can use non-toxic and sustainable materials. You can ask a family member to help you with securing these items. Another idea would be to ensure that your appliances are certified with an Energy Star, which means they are energy-efficient.
You can also put indoor plants in strategic areas in your home (if you do not yet have an indoor garden).
5. Keep your mind active
An active mind is a healthy mind; as such, don’t hesitate to try out brain-stimulating activities like
- reading
- browsing the internet (you can ask your grandchildren to help you with this)
- playing games like Sudoku, chess, Words with Friends, and even online games
- doing crossword puzzles or trivia games
- drawing or painting
- making a scrapbook or writing a journal
- organizing your photo albums
6. Schedule a “quiet time”
Spending some time alone is healthy because it allows you to relax and reflect. It’s good for your mind, body, and soul. Set aside at least one hour a day as your quiet time. It can be a mid-day, mid-afternoon, or pre-bedtime meditation.
You can listen to meditative music or soothing sounds if you want. Breathe in and breathe out, relax, and try to keep your mind free of any thoughts.
7. Prioritize your hygiene
Just because you spend most of your time at home doesn’t mean you can take personal hygiene for granted. Taking a bath or showering regularly is a commitment to a cleaner and healthier lifestyle.
Also, brush your teeth at least twice a day. You should wear fresh and clean clothes every day, too. Ensure that your sheets, pillows, and other beddings are changed regularly.
8. Find time for entertainment
Entertainment is a way of relaxing, especially at a challenging time such as the one we have now. It’s a way of decompressing from the stresses of life. Always find time to pause and take a break for some fun and good entertainment. As long as you’re not spending hours each day sitting in front of the tv, watching entertaining programs can be good for your body and mind.
Watch your favorite shows or movies on TV, Netflix, cable TV, or any streaming service. You can also choose to watch videos on YouTube; be sure to select those that make you happy and feel good. Happy hormones can help improve your general well-being.
Listening to music is also a good form of entertainment. Want to go a step further? Try music therapy, which has been scientifically proven to help senior with cognitive function and stress reduction, among other benefits.
9. Spend time under the sun
It’s advisable to avoid going out in places with big crowds, but you can always go out into your garden or backyard. Spend at least 15 minutes every day under the morning sun (before 10 am, if possible) to get vitamin D, which is good for building your immune system – aside from keeping your heart, muscle, and bone healthy. It is also great for regulating your sleep, alleviating some symptoms of Alzheimer’s and dementia, and combatting depression. If possible, avoid spending long periods of time in the sun between 10 am and 4pm, the hottest part of the day. Better yet, be sure to protect your skin with a good SPF cream no matter what time of day you’re out enjoying the sun.
10. Eat a healthy diet and follow good sleeping habits
A well-balanced diet and at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep are essential for good health. Here’s what you should do to ensure that your diet and sleep are aiding and not undermining your health:
- Eat on time
- A good and healthy meal: more fruits and vegetables, less salt, starchy food, and sugar
- Don’t forget to take your vitamins – and medications (if there are any) on time
Tips for getting a good night’s sleep include the following:
- Avoid watching or reading anything that can trigger anxiety or negative thoughts before going to bed
- Don’t drink coffee, soda, or alcohol, and don’t eat close to bedtime
- Follow a regular sleeping schedule (ex. lights off at 10 pm)
- Turn off the TV and all gadgets and devices once you are in bed
The tips above may be simple ones, but they are vital to helping seniors like you cope with the health and safety challenges of Covid-19. Talk with your family members, loved ones, or your healthcare worker if you need guidance in your quest for a healthier lifestyle.

5 Tips to Keep You Exercising in the Summer
Summer in Arizona is HOT and sometimes humid, but definitely hot! This can make exercising difficult for many people, including myself.
So what do you do when the weather is too hot outside to exercise and you just don't feel like it? Well, I wanted to share 5 tips to help keep you motivated to exercise during the hot summer months!
1. Schedule It Into Your Calendar- Just like a doctor’s appointment or lunch date with a friend you need to put it into your calendar so you won’t miss this appointment with yourself. I schedule every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 5 a.m. to run 3 miles with Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday as strength training or yoga.
2. Find An Accountability Partner- This partner can be a friend, spouse, trainer, relative, or physical therapist that will check in with you daily or weekly to make sure you are on track to maintaining your exercise goals.
3. Take It Indoors- When it is 90 degrees at 5AM and 103 degrees at 9PM no one wants to be outdoors let alone exercising outdoors! So why not take your exercise routine indoors. I know many older adults who walk around the inside of a mall before it opens to the public where it is cool. Another option is to take a group exercise class or follow a class online.
4. Keep It Simple- Make exercise fun and simple. Don’t feel like you have to attend an exercise class if you have to figure out transportation or move appointments to do so. Choose an exercise that is easy and repeatable.
5. Use The Buddy System- This one is the game changer for me! Knowing that I am meeting a friend to run at 5am motivates me to wake up at 4:30am and not skip a day! I know there may be some of you that enjoy working out alone and this tip may not apply to you so go back to tip #2. However, for those that need the extra motivation find someone who will join you in your workout!
Moving your body for 30 minutes a day doesn't have to be a chore or challenge. Make it fun and simple! I hope you can use some or all of these tips to keep you motivated to exercise this summer.

My iPod's old Spanish walk/run playlist (from many years ago when I used to do that thing) is coming in handy again. Since the session is over, I am getting back into interval trailing with step, weights, hula hoop and zumba -- using this interval training tape of classic Latin music. (You may remember I was doing this during the pandemic.) Some of the fast merengue and salsa songs take me back to the elliptical trainer at Bally's at Swan and Grant ... and to El Parador. My intention is to do this 30 minute interval routine on three days a week and something else on other days like yoga, pilates, floor exercises, swimming, gardening, walking, dancing etc. I have done two days of the interval training this week. It makes me feel so good to vigorously exercise. Every journey starts with a single step. The Vision Board
Vision Boards. I never really believed in them or saw the point of doing a vision board. The first time I did one was as a team-building exercise with a company I was working for. When it was my turn to share my board and talk about what it meant, I burst out crying in front of the entire team, because I couldn’t see how any of the items on my board would ever be possible. Many years passed before I could bring myself to do another one.
The second time was this one – the one you see at the top of this blog. I did it on December 13, 2015 as an activity during my girlfriend’s book release. At that time, I still didn’t believe in the manifesting power of a vision board, but it was a fun activity to do while chatting with guests at the party. After the event, I put my half-finished vision board in the spare closet of my sons’ playroom and forgot all about it.
In December 2019, I was cleaning my office (the former playroom) when I found the old vision board. I didn’t remember pasting the pictures or the quotes to the poster, but as a I looked closely at each cutout, it slowly dawned on me that I had actually manifested every picture on the board over the previous four years.
I had created a clean, minimalist room I call my sanctuary, just like the clean rooms I’d put on the board.
I had published two books, just like the ones I’d placed in the middle of the board.
I had spent time retreating in the red rock mountains of Sedona, Arizona, exactly like the scene on my vision board.
I had shopped in an open-air market in Qatar with incense and spices in glass jars lining the walls, just like the photo on the top left of my vision board.
I had walked through majestic temples in Thailand and Bali, just like the one in the middle top of my board.
I had literally created a balance of being home in the US with my family and away in distant countries, just like the phrase I’d pasted on the lower left corner of the board.
In December 2015, I couldn’t begin to fathom a clean room in my house, or traveling to the middle east and southeast Asia, or having my novel become a book club favorite. In December 2019, I stared at the board, trying to remember when and how it had all happened.
At some point in 2016, I completely changed the way I think about things, people, and places. I altered my focus and priorities, and I began speaking and moving differently. Just like that… everything began shifting. This is the foundation of the “Law of Attraction”.
What we believe, think about, talk about, and do manifests more of the same in our lives. Therefore, if we pessimistically believe negative things will happen, say negative things are going to happen, and walk around expecting negative things to happen, we manifest the negative thing – even if we want and desire the exact opposite. On the other hand, if we optimistically believe positive things will happen, speak positively, and walk around expecting wonderful things to happen, we manifest positive outcomes. This is the Law of Attraction.
There was a period in my life when I simply didn’t believe it was that easy. It didn’t matter what Deepak, Oprah, Wayne Dyer, Abraham Hicks, or The Secret said – I didn’t think it could happen for someone like me. What changed my mind? Saying yes to an offer that I would normally have found multiple reasons to say no to. Saying yes instead of no has changed my entire life.
Now, it’s 2020. It’s a new year, a new decade, and a strange new chapter with new opportunities. We all have a clean slate with new chances to say yes to things that scare us. What will you say yes to in this new season of life?

How to get motivated to work out?
It's time to get your sweat on and smash those mental barriers with your best fitness trainer!
We are all aware of the positive effects exercise, and physical activity has on our bodies, minds, and spirits. But occasionally, the voice inside our heads encourages us to forgo our workout, order takeout, and work for a few more hours.

Shortening My Bucket List
As it’s Friday the 13th, I might as well consult my bucket list and think about something pleasant. One dream I’ve had for some time is to spend a couple of weeks at a luxury spa. Paying more to eat smaller food portions might seem foolish, but I like the idea of pampering, the essence of spa life. Image waking up to days where all I need think about is my upcoming massage, facial, sauna or time spent in a hot tub. A little yoga might suit me, especially if it’s followed by a nap in a lounge chair beside a heated pool. Just thinking about the escape relaxes me. But wait. There’s more. An article on spa life I read recently suggests I’m not thinking creatively enough about my dream experience. (“The Wild, Wild Rest,” by Brandon Presser, Bloomberg Businessweek, March 2, 20202 ps. 55-59.) And how true that is. It would never occur to me, for example, to bring a large feather to my massage session for a little tickle. At the Canyon Ranch Spa in Arizona, I’d have that option. But tickle where I wonder. Speculation alone makes me giggle. But I digress. Let’s talk about food. At Canyon Ranch, I’m assured, I would have a multitude of menu choices. I might order half a wonton or a dozen, together with kale and coconut rice without the coconut. I’m not sure how the latter is done but it’s good to know I have options. I can even state a preference for the color of my waiter’s hair, apparently. Cheeseburgers and booze are a no-no, which is no hardship for me. But if I were to have a craving, it’s comforting to know there’s a convenience store a short walk down the road. If money is no object, I’d be allowed to have my room repainted or redecorated and I could change the pictures on the walls. Of course, I’d never waste money that way. Nor would I fork over $2,000 to $3,000 for a Botox treatment. A less expensive adventure might be to browse through the sex toy room. There, a customer can expose him or herself (pun intended) to any number of items. Particularly popular among the guests is a $200 We-Vibe Synic, useful in long-distance relationships. Apparently, the remote control allows couples to push each other’s buttons from across the miles. Now that I’ve learned all about the spa, I’ve decided to stay home. The retirement center has a masseuse. Whether feathers are involved, I don’t know and don’t care. I prefer to spend time in our hot tub or sauna. Of course, like the spa, I can swim in our heated pool, take an exercise class or work out in the gym with a trainer. Why bother packing? True, the food service isn’t as flexible as the spa’s, but our chef makes an effort to respond to requests and addresses food allergies. Even so, I admit, I’m inclined to sneak out for a crispy taco now and again. As for the sex toy room, we don’t have that. But, never mind, one seasoned resident assures me there’s an accommodating shop in the neighborhood.

IMST Breathing
If you’re looking for a better memory and a sharper edge to your intellectual abilities, an easy, five-minute exercise may do the trick.
According to research at the University of Colorado at Boulder, this exercise might also improve your heart health. And get this: It doesn’t require lifting weights or even taking a single step.
Elite cyclists and runners are already using this technique to improve their athletic endurance.
It’s a breathing exercise you can do without getting up from your chair…
This breathing activity with brain benefits is called “Inspiratory Muscle Strength Training” (IMST).
The exercise was devised back in the 1980s as a method for helping critically ill hospital patients get off of ventilators. You perform IMST by inhaling against resistance offered by a hand-held little gadget called an inspiratory muscle trainer – a device that makes you work harder to get air in and out of your lungs. The Colorado folks compare it to sucking through a straw that “sucks back.”
Strength Training for the Breathing Muscles
“IMST is basically strength-training for the muscles you breathe in with,” says researcher Daniel Craighead. “It’s something you can do quickly in your home or office, without having to change your clothes, and so far it looks like it is very beneficial to lower blood pressure and possibly boost cognitive and physical performance.”
In 2016, scientists at the University of Arizona investigated whether this device could help people suffering from sleep apnea – the condition that causes folks to stop breathing and then gasp for air periodically during the night. Those tests found that IMST increased restful sleep and, after six weeks, it significantly decreased blood pressure.
On the heels of that successful trial, the Colorado tests confirmed that using the technique for just five minutes a day reduces blood pressure and improves artery function.
The more you stick with it, the better it gets: After six weeks, people using IMST performed better on tests of their memory and cognition – though the cautious Colorado investigators say they need to study the brain effects more extensively before they can confirm this result.1
Breathe Like a Yogi
If you want to go old-school and improve your memory with ancient breathing exercises, studies now also show that breathing techniques that are more than 2,000 years old – the meditative breath control used in yoga and Buddhism – can help your brain.
Research in Ireland demonstrates that combining mindful meditation with controlled breathing influences the levels of noradrenaline in the brain. This messenger chemical, say the researchers, helps you focus and learn new information. It also increases in your brain when you have your opinions challenged, your curiosity aroused and your emotions provoked.
In their tests, the researchers analyzed the activity of a part of the brain called the locus coeruleus – where most of the brain’s noradrenaline is produced. They say that this part of the brain is key to successfully doing mental tasks that require focus and also controls breathing. By doing mindful breathing, the researchers say, we can modulate the release of noradrenaline from the locus coeruleus to optimize our memories and reasoning powers.2
“Noradrenaline is an all-purpose action system in the brain. When we are stressed, we produce too much noradrenaline and we can’t focus. When we feel sluggish, we produce too little and again, we can’t focus,” says researcher Michael Melnychuk. “There is a sweet spot of noradrenaline in which our emotions, thinking and memory are much clearer.”
According to this research, mindful breathing helps you hit that “sweet spot.”
If you’d like to try out any of these techniques, you can find a mindful breathing exercise from the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFSc7Ck0Ao0. And if you search on the Internet for “Inspiratory Muscle Strength Training,” you’ll find a variety of trainers for under $35. I haven’t tried any of these yet, so I can’t recommend any one in particular. But it’s not a complicated device so I suspect any of them should work just fine.
