um so about that jackken

The train leaves, and the other people dissipate to loved ones or waiting cars or simply just start walking with the sort of energy that says they know where they're going.  Jack stands on the platform and looks up the tracks, watching the train disappear as his shirt starts to stick to his back in a humidity that reminds him of Texas.  But he's not in Texas. He's in Arkansas. In Pocohantas. The war's been over for nine months. He's been back in the states for eight of them. He'd flown back across the Atlantic with Blakely and Douglass and Harry and all the replacements who'd taken the place of his original boys. He'd stared out the cockpit window as the propellers had started and watched Ken standing just off the runway, hands on his hips and meeting Jack's eyes like it was the easiest thing in the world.  Under Jack's flight suit, under the flying scarf from his mother, Ken's locket had rested against his chest.  * "Ken," Jack says, voice  shaking as he watches Ken take it off. He's never seen Ken without it. It feels obscene to watch him remove it. Like a priest breaking a rosary.  Ken steps forward and opens Jack's hand, lays the locket in his palm, then closes Jack's fingers around it. "When you know what you're doing, you come and find me," he says, and his eyes are full of tears, but there's hope in there, too. Bright and wild and beautiful. "You get your head back where you need it, and you come find me," he says. "You've got my address." Jack does. Ken's handed it to him not five minutes before, asking Jack to write. Telling Jack– "Can you–Ken, I'm sorry. I shouldn't ask. Never mind," Jack says in a rush.  Ken rubs his thumb over Jack's fingers and keeps his gaze steady. "I love you," he says. "That what you wanted to hear again?" Jack nods, a knot in his throat stopping him from saying anything. He grabs the inside of Ken's arm with his free hand, feels the rough weave of his coveralls, the warmth of his skin. Stares at his freckles and his eyes and his hair. Memorizes him.  "You start feeling like you love me back, you come find me," Ken says. "Because I believe you  do, Jack. And I believe you'll feel it once all this war wears off for you."  And then Ken stands on his toes and kisses Jack's cheek, sweet and soft and careful. "It'll be an awfully big adventure," he murmurs in Jack's ear.  Jack manages to hold himself up until Ken's left him alone, and then he drops hard onto a crate and wishes he could cry.
