important first note, quite a few of my decisions were because i was trying to get women in here and it was getting desperate because i had to cut out a lot of women for only being "just some guy" because they were written by a misogynist that made her sit on the sidelines and cheer for the male leads. anyways on to the actual contestants im gonna start with the characters that have been causing the most people to start up shit about them not being just some guy

barry bluejeans (taz balance): 2 submissions, personal bias. i think a lot of people are misunderstanding what this tournament is tbh. this isnt about the "normal" characters, tho normalcy does play a factor in it. this is about dudes who are just some guy. there is a difference. barry is a dnd npc who wears blue jeans in a fantasy world and he loves his wife. yes he is a lich. yes he is involved in the main plot. he's also just chillin. like if the plot didn't happen the way it did barry would be playing sudoku or crosswords. he'd be an average man in a very fantasy world. he is so average and human its funny. he is just some guy

tommy (hlvrai): 1 submission, personal bias. his just some guy energy is so there. he gets a propeller hat that does nothing when all of his crew is getting cool guns and upgrades. his life goal is to go home and take his dog for a walk. he gets a chuck e cheese birthday party. he sounds like he's going to burst into tears at any moment. compared to the rest of the crew, tommy is comedically just some guy

ulala (persona 2): 1 submission, description swayed me. it described the list of characters in persona 2 and ulala was just "your roommate that wanted to go to a party". that's hilarious. also i was getting fucking desperate for women that didn't suck ass as i stated above

gilear (fantasy high): 2 submissions. he seems to be just a dad. wasn't going to get in at first tbh just for personal reasons but i was running out of characters that i felt actually fit the tournament well so ultimately he got in

emmet (lego movie): 4 submissions. honestly with the number of submissions we got, 4 submissions was basically a guaranteed entry. and emmet's whole story is about being just some guy

stahl (fire emblem): 1 submission, hilarious description. fire emblem fans are so funny. what do you mean he can only be perfectly average because everyone else improves/gets worse with him to keep him perfectly average. what the fuck. thats so good

doug (wolf359): 2 entries. i dont know jack shit about wolf359 and honestly the submissions didn't tell me a lot but it was enough to figure he qualifies and i was running out of characters that felt good for the tourney. i trust you wolf359 fans

jack townsend (tales from the gas station): 1 submission, good description. he works at an evil gas station and the description gave me no follow up on what an evil gas station is which is awesome. apparently the horrors are constantly happening and he's just kinda staring at them. he's not paid enough for this

She had fainted at the sight of a three headed demon hound. Eirika and Seth agreed it best to bring her to the nearest village to Valni and interrogate her when she woke up.

The questioning proved fruitless, though. All this 'Trucy' could do was express confusion at the fact she was no longer in "California".

"Do you at least remember how you got here?" Eirika asked.

The girl thought for only the briefest moment before a great smile lit up her face, "Daddy was helping me practice a dissappearing act! I think it worked too well."

"Dissappearing act?"

"I'm a magician!"

Whatever was up with this girl, Eirika and Seth did not have the time to figure out. They took to the war tent, engaging in yet another boring conversation with Innes about their next course of action.

Trucy took to wandering around the campsite. All these people with odd clothes sat, talked and recovered from their latest battle. Not everyone, though.

"You!" an incredibly confident voice said.

It reminded Trucy of how Apollo would shout in court, but somehow more confident. No pathetic chords of steel could ever match this sprightly girl's laugh.

"Me!?" Trucy asked.

"Yes, you!" the girl quickly approached, "You look absolutely splendid! Do tell me what magnificent name accompanies your wonderful appearance!"

"I'm Trucy!"

The girl smiled at the name, "How delightful! My name is L'arachel, you'd do well to remember it. Anyway, I overheard you telling our dear Eirika that you're a magician?"

"Yes!" Trucy beamed, "I specialize in dissappearing magic!"

She needed only the simplest of descriptions to attract a small crowd. A group of at least ten sat on the ground before her, eager to see the skills she had boasted of.

"Thank you all for gathering today!" she smiled.

"WOOO!" the "crowd" cheered.

"Thank you, thank you. Ahem, now look here. With powers granted to me by a monster energy drink I had a few hours ago and a youtube video I like, I will use this cape and wand to make the lovely lady L'arachel dissappear!"

Trucy had really nailed her stage voice, everyone gasped. They all held their breaths as she lifted the cape to hide L'arachel. The girls exchanged a smile.

"And now... Abracadabra!" Trucy smiled.

She tore the cape away, expecting an empty spot of grass where L'arachel stood mere moments ago, instead...

"... This isn't the courthouse," a horribly familiar voice muttered.

"DADDY!?" Trucy cried.

"Oh, hey Trucy!" Phoenix smiled, "Where are we?"

"It's a long story- Where is L'arachel?!"

"Who?"

L'arachel shrieked with joy, taking Apollo's hands in hers as she danced and danced, "Trucy's dissappearing spell worked!"

babbling about iris and a bit about dahlia bc they are awesomely awesome characters

iris is one of The characters ever like takumi accidentally wrote an amazingly compelling morally-grey female character but barely did anything w her (common trend with his characters)

like this is an insane line that everybody just glosses over like.. dahlia's murder of doug swallow + attempted murder of phoenix wright is, by iris' own admission, the first time dahlia had ever acted out without iris' knowledge. and yes iris' line here can be interpreted specifically as "this was the first time dahlia's actions regarding phoenix weren't planned between dahlia and iris", but considering that:

1.) iris knew abt dahlia's faked kidnapping plot

2.) knew that dahlia had poisoned armando, and pretended to be dahlia to try and retrieve the necklace from phoenix in order to protect her

and 3.) hid the fact that she swapped places with a channelled dahlia at the sacred cavern,

im more inclined to believe that this line of hers meant that this is the first time that dahlia had ever acted out without iris' knowledge. which would then imply that every other scheme dahlia had carried out before this, iris has had knowledge of.. which honestly makes sense. like several of dahlia's crimes (faked kidnapping + murder of valerie) took place in close proximity of hazakura temple, and when u take this line into account, its more than likely that iris had played some sort of role in valerie's murder. like.. im sorry its just so mindboggling to me that so many ppl talk abt iris like she's the "good" twin or that she was threatened into helping dahlia bc like.... that just isnt true. if she was actually a "good" person, she wouldve let someone know that terry fawles was being framed, that dahlia had murdered valerie, and tht dahlia had poisoned armando and gave the evidence away to phoenix. cuz like what would dahlia hv done to her? shes a small woman whose preferred method of killing is poison, and even though iris had said this:

dahlia's attempt to kill phoenix was a discrete attempt at poisoning, which relied on him being sick, and failed anyways. her murder of doug swallow was a matter of luck that a dangerous live wire was just dangling around, and her stabbing of valerie is well... lmfao its video game logic so ill ignore that. and also like, dahlia actually cares abt iris. its extremely unlikely she'd ever hurt her, and this is evident in the way that she had never once incriminated iris at any point. she couldve revealed tht iris had known abt the faked kidnapping, had known that she poisoned armando and was planning to kill phoenix, and yet she never does. during 3-5's final trial dahlia calls iris a nuisance and a backstabber, but yet never once does she reveal the extent of iris' complicity. the most she does is privately reveal to phoenix that iris had known abt the faked kidnapping. and she only does this as a channelled spirit, who now harbors a degree of resentment towards iris for her 'betrayals':

but when dahlia was alive? what would she hv done to threaten iris? the most plausible thing she could do is maybe threaten the safety of sister bikini, but yet this possibility is never mentioned at any point. what is more likely is that iris wasnt being threatened into helping dahlia out, and instead helped her out of her own volition bc she loved and cared for her in spite of everything:

and this would also then make this other crazy line from iris make much more sense:

iris, knowing full and well that dahlia cared deeply for her, would use her own well-being as a bargaining chip to protect phoenix. basically, "if you try to kill phoenix i will Kill Myself." and also the fact that she admits that she considered killing her own sister like... DOES THIS SOUND LIKE A "GOOD" TWIN TO YOU??

and say even if iris was being threatened by dahlia... she still continues to keep quiet about everything, even after shes incarcerated and has no means to hurt her. never once does iris reach out to phoenix and tells him "yeah sorry but i was lying to you for 6 months". even when phoenix is right in front of her face, she still doesnt admit this to him. and then she goes on to cover up another murder, this time at the hands of godot, and continues to lie to not just phoenix, but other members of law enforcement. and when faced with dahlia, who is being channelled by maya.. she still chooses to help her, aiding her in deceiving everyone:

oh and did i also mention that she um.. BRUTALLY DESECRATED HER AUNT'S CORPSE...?!?!?

like it really drives me nuts how ppl say that she's the opposite of dahlia, that shes her better half. cuz shes really... really not. shes been an accomplice of dahlia for god knows how long, having kept quiet about her various killings and poisonings, deceived phoenix for 6 months and let him believe for 6 whole years that the woman who loved him was also the woman who tried to kill him, had considered killing her sister, tried to cover up a murder, helped her dead sister deceive everyone, and desecrated her aunt's corpse. and shes an amazing character for that!!! iris is just as dark-hearted as dahlia, and the only difference is that she never took the plunge and took someone's life, though she does admit to having considered doing that. but still, she is an accomplice all the same.

both her and dahlia love each other, but hold feelings of resentment and remorse towards one another. dahlia feels betrayed by iris, and iris knows this. also this post puts this aspect of dahlia's character into words much better than i ever could, so let me just snag it and put it over here:

in order to reduce iris into this "good twin threatened by her evil twin", it requires a disregard and flanderization of both iris' and dahlia's character. and considering how much this fandom loves to beat down dahlia and regard her as this cartoonishly evil character, its no wonder that iris' character is similarly oversimplified; bc people love to make dahlia = bad, then iris must be good! well BZZZT Wrong! both iris and dahlia are amazingly complex characters... who unfortunately exist in ace attorney's universe, where character complexity is secondary to murder mystery, if its even considered at all. and this is why the narrative does the insane decision to frame phoenix's unwavering belief in iris' character as a good thing which is um. Excuse Me? like he has no evidence whatsoever to suggest that the woman he fell in love with isnt the same woman who tried to kill him. but like ok sure he's defended clients in more incriminating situations, so the story is probably drawing a final parallel of Believe In Your Client with phoenix's and iris' dynamic. except the reveal that phoenix's gf did not try to kill him but instead.... lied to him for 6 months, never told him about the danger he was in during this time, left him to believe that she tried to kill him, and continued to deceive him is like. Bro. Hello. nothing about this is admirable and just makes phoenix look like an extremely unhealthily devoted man like....!!!?!?

but anyways YEAH iris is a charmingly complex character who was too good for ace attorney. sniffles. but i see you iris i know you're crazy and i love u!!!

i always and i mean always fall for the transgirl characters even transgirl irl i love transness sm i love femininity, not feminine identifying myself but MY GOD feminine presentation is beautiful, all kinds. and yes, i have to make everything about shuake. i feel like one reason i really like them so much is cuz of my own projections onto them, its uhm.. a lot that goes into all that but in the general, i based akechi on someone i heavily care about and met last year (which when once talking to them told me about how they would think about transitioning like mtf when they grew older) and with that, was born my akechi transfemme headcanon. didnt realize it at the time, didnt realize many things but i also ended up learning apparently i have a thing for transfemme characters and just feminine presenting characters in general! like to list some characters i have hyperfixated on in the past esp in the art category goes from maya fey to saki tenma to akechi in that order and when it comes to some of favorite characters i wasnt able to draw more often due to a bunch of other stuff were characters like phoenix wright and mizuki akiyama and further in both lists is a bunch more. and its true i only listed two characters i really like headcanon as transfemme there but i see phoenix more of a feminine guy, still being cis but liking more pink girly “gay” shit lol and obviously the struggles that come with that. i see saki and maya as more femme girls liking pink and struggling with their femininity in a way that goes with sexuality and what it feels to be the femme one in a relationship or a feminine presenting woman which brings me into my bigger topic.

mi nina bella arquita (arca the singer lol) posted on her story a tumblr post about transfeminity and how difficult the experience is for trans women and mind you im not a trans woman myself but just knowing the experience of being a woman or being born female more like it like i cant imagine what that must be like to somebody who is new to that concept, even if it’s scientifically not very different, i can’t imagine learning that so late in life or whenever u learn it to someone treated as a complete outsider if that makes any sense. and again like i stated early and in no little more to my adhd i always think about akechi, its just a necessity atp. but he was somebody who never got the chance to even think about things like that, like i know what that experience feels like, as a trans person myself and mind you my upbringing was very different than his aside being born female and all, i had the time and the support even if very little and not the best to be honest to think on all those things but he didn’t he had nobody else. that even brings me to akira. i dont headcanon akira as transfemme at all i see him as transmasc very heavily to the point i treat it as canon but anywho, its the same sorta contrast. akechi is so closed off to the idea of his transfeminity, even i feel he would already know he’s gay and interact probably with others online who are, very distantly but yea lol i think he would be a stan twitter reveluv but to the idea of being trans and not just trans but transfemme, is a completely different story for him.

You guys first met at the Gatewater Hotel, where you were working there as a receptionist for some money for college. He came in to investigate a minor case under Wright’s request, and went up to you to ask questions.

He was a very nervous guy who spoke a little too loud, but you thought that was a part of his charm.

“HI IM APOLLO-ahem- um, sorry. Hello, I was wondering if you could help me with a case.” “heheh, yeah, I can help you, what do you need?”

You ended up needing to assist him around the hotel, guiding him to the places he needed to investigate, and you gave him access to use employee paths so that he wouldn’t disrupt any people. While guiding, you guys talked and learned a bit about each other, such as your favourite book or show, some basic information.

After he was done with his case, he came back to the hotel on a day when you weren't working, and asked your coworker if they could hand his phone number to you when you were in, as he’d like to get to know you more. When you did get it, you guys basically talked more and more, and hung out often.

One time he asked you if you wanted to swing by the Wright Anything Agency to meet his friends. He introduced you to Trucy, a girl who practiced magic (The show kind), Athena Cykes, his fellow lawyer who could read people’s emotions during testimonies, and the boss of the agency, Mr Phoenix Wright himself. They all treated you very kindly, but teased Apollo endlessly for “finally bringing over a lady friend because he’s too lonely” lmao

He finally built up the courage to ask you out when Trucy basically forced him to do it. He pulled out a few flowers from behind his back (also courtesy of Trucy, the ultimate wingman), and asks you out for a nice picnic in the park. You said yes, of course.

In your relationship, if you ever find yourself sleeping at the other’s house, it always ends up with Apollo accidentally yelling “I’m fine!” too loud.

You guys are always very sweet with each other, and with his bracelet, he always knows when something is bothering you. He coaxes the problem out of you and always helps you find a solution. You guys are closely knit together precisely because you face every problem together.

10/10, would yell “I’m fine!” again

Miles Edgeworth

You first met Edgeworth through working under Gumshoe during a kidnapping case. Edgeworth saw your work ethic and how you did your job with incredible efficiency. He always looked to you to gather information that Gumshoe couldn’t pick up on.

You always provided the most airtight testimonies and evidence when you were called to the stand. Edgeworth always felt so proud that he could once again win his cases flawlessly.

Though from time to time, when he inevitably went up against Phoenix Wright, he would see you work with him to provide details on the case, and he would feel a small pang in his chest. He thought nothing of it, but seeing you work so well with someone that wasn’t him irked him to his core.

Meanwhile, you were talking to Phoenix about cases as per usual, when he suddenly brought up Edgeworth. “What do you think of Miles?” He asked. “He’s a real cool prosecutor, and he’s quite a pleasant person. There’s some sort of air around him that I can’t help but feel drawn to, but I don’t know why.”

You oblivious mf. You stupid little detective. At the very least you aren’t calling those feelings unnecessary, unlike SOMEONE. Edgeworth is busy mulling over his “unnecessary feelings” in his office by playing stressful logic chess. For a prosecutor, you’d think he could figure out that he was actually falling for you.

All of this came to a peak when you two were discussing in his office details about work. He was straight up about how he felt. “Thanks to that attorney, I am riddled with…unnecessary feelings when it comes to you. I wish to put myself at ease by-” “I like you too Edgeworth.”

You read him like a case file. And you weren’t afraid to tell him how you felt, maybe it would make it easier for him to do the same if you did. You smiled at him brightly and took his hand in yours. “Phoenix brought you up one day, and I kept saying nothing but “lovey-dovey words that only oblivious people use”, his words. It was easy to tell that I was starting to like you in a romantic way.”

He stared at you in shock. Was he really so easy to read? Well anyhow, he was relieved that you wouldn’t end up with Phoenix. He smiled at you and then asked if you wanted to come over to his house for some dinner. He’s a killer cook.

You guys went on your first official date at a fancy restaurant, totally not being followed by Phoenix and Larry wdym, there not there, that's Furio and Harry smh.

You guys are an incredible force within law, and whenever a criminal sees you two on the prosecutor’s bench, they know they’re screwed.

Phoenix Wright

You met Phoenix first when he became your lawyer, as you were accused of murdering a famous celebrity for supposedly being their obsessive ex. You had dated this person in high school, but it had been years since you two had broken up.

You sat in the visitor room shaking and afraid that this lawyer wouldn’t believe you, because when you were first taken into custody, the police didn’t believe you were being framed. But you knew you were innocent, there were things at the crime scene and background details that only you knew, but investigators wouldn’t hear you out.

When Phoenix came to see if he would take your case, he asked you questions and you answered them truthfully, and he believed you without question. You gave him a list of things to keep in mind while he was investigating the crime scene with his faithful assistant Maya. You hoped that he would save you before time was up.

When the trial came, you were being prosecuted by a man named Miles Edgeworth, and you heard that he was known for being a fierce prosecutor who had a dark history of being accused of faulty evidence. But Phoenix Wright gave his word to prove you innocent.

While Phoenix was out investigating, you ruminated in your jail cell about your ex’s possible enemies. You remember your ex’s previous significant other, and they were rumoured to be married or were already married. You also knew that he used to have a lot of money. You conducted your own theories and wrote down your thoughts: He might have eloped with his fiance, but I can’t think of any reasons that they would want to accuse me. What is it about them that connects them to both him and me? Did they used to know me? Did they know that we had dated in high school maybe, is that it? Who knew then, who liked him too?

Little by little the details clicked, and when you were on the stand for the second trial day, you gave your notes to Wright and told him to look into the ‘fiance’. The fiance was called to testify, and you noticed details similar to a girl that used to be your friend in high school, the only difference was that their names were different. She had only recently been known to the public, which meant that either she had planned for the name change and therefore the murder plot, or that she wasn’t the murderer but was involved with the plot.

You asked Wright to look through pictures of your high school graduating class for anyone that looked like the fiance. He brought you a photo, and you pointed out to him the differences that you saw. She had dyed her hair blonde, wore a lot more makeup compared to back then, and even got minor procedures done on her face like a nose job. But the one thing you noticed was the same was that she had a birthmark right below her left ear, and it was so particular that it couldn’t be anyone else. All that you needed to establish was her motive, and from then you knew everything.

In short, you told Phoenix everything about your high school days, and how your friend had always made countless advances on your ex when the two of you were still dating. She always accused you of using him for money or fame, which you always denied. After you had broken up with him, you all graduated and went your separate ways.

“But its been years since it all happened, I guess she is just hellbent on exacting her revenge from years ago,” you told Phoenix. He nodded.

The third trial day comes, and you hold your shaky breath as the trial enters its final stage. But you had hope, and in the end, Phoenix Wright pulled through and saved you.

The minute you were out of the courtroom as a free person, you jumped into his arms and hugged Phoenix tightly. “Thank you, I really really thank you.”

He smiled brightly and replied in turn, “No problem, its my job to fight for justice, you don’t need to owe me.”

But you wouldn’t let him leave without giving him something in return, and Maya kept pestering him to accept your offer.He relented, and you asked him to hang out with you for a day. Yeah right, you guys just went out on a date. You went out for lunch at a nice place near your place of work, a museum. You then gave him a tour of the museum and was so lost in leading him around, that you didn’t notice how he stared admirably at you describing exhibits. You guys exchanged phone numbers after that, and kept hanging out more. Before you know it, he asked you to be his significant other on a nice picnic date in the park with a lovely sunset as a view. You two were very bashful.

Maya totally didn’t invite Larry and Pearl to spy on you two. No. those are actually bushes over there and definitely not people;)

one of the finest mystery games you can play imo. maybe uchikoshi’s best work. a perfect blend of mystery, character, and style. every character and conversation is compelling in its own way and every little thing builds up to the huge moments which makes them all feel totally earned. as always uchikoshi is a genius in the way he blends his signature branching timeline style with the themes and core concepts of the game. the twists and turns this game goes down are so crazy that weeks later you’ll still be realizing how all the little things you thought were just quirks were actually foreshadowing. cannot recc this enough tbh.

Zero Escape: The Nonary Games - $11.99

another uchikoshi joint, also extremely good. ive only played 999, the first game in this collection, but i can recc it just based on the strength of that alone. whereas somnium is a murder mystery, 999 is a visual novel about being trapped in a murder game interspliced with escape room segments. whatever you think you know you dont, 999 will take you down so many twists and turns you’ll be fucking dizzy when you’re done with it. big recc.

VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action - $10.04

i could probably talk about this game for as long as the others, even though its way way less complex. va-11 hall-a doesnt have a huge sweeping story with insane twists and massive reveals, but what it does have is an extremely personal narrative about loss, healing, and just living your life the best way you can in a horrible dystopian world. the cast of characters feel utterly real and you learn about the world they inhabit through interactions with them, rather than being infodumped by exposition. everyone has their own story and everyone is just trying to get by, including you. one of the best small scale personal narrative games ive ever played.

Night In The Woods - $9.99

another vn i would consider “small scale” but equally as impactful. nitw is a story about a disillusioned and struggling college drop out returning to her economically declining home town. nobody is secure, nobody is happy, everyone is suffering through their daily lives. you follow mae as she struggled to readjust to her childhood home and the people she left behind. until something happens that changes her priorities radically. all ill say. despite how i just made it sound, nitw is not all depressing. theres lighthearted moments and wacky days to cut through the bleak fog, as well as genuinely heartfelt moments that feel very earned. nitw is a game i think that everyone struggling through their 20s should play.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy - $14.99

a trilogy of some of the most iconic visual novels ever made. if you havent played ace attorney what the hell are you doing? these games blend outlandish humor and engaging characters with genuinely impactful writing and thoughtful social commentary. these are truly genuinely classics and i cannot express the kind of treat youre in for if youve never experienced these games.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles - $24.79

imagine the ace attorney trilogy but with the serious themes and social commentary turned up a few notches. great ace attorney is what you’d get. like the trilogy this is multiple games bundled into one (two of them) and is a great value. a must play for fans of the originals, and frankly a perfect jumping point for new fans as well, if you so choose to. you cant go wrong with either the trilogy or tgaa.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection - $15.99

yes obviously im going to shill for mcc. this is SIX whole games. fully functioning multiplayer, custom lobbies, co-op, everything you remember from these games on xbox but better. this is literally $360 worth of games for $16. if youve ever been curious about this iconic franchise or want to relive the xbox live days, mcc is damn near perfect.

Portal 1 & 2 - $2.98

honestly its 2022 and you dont own portal? cmon. two of the best narrative puzzle games ever made. a strong argument for games as art. incredibly clever game design and timeless writing. the portal games are something everyone should experience. i paid like $80 for these games back in the day, the fact that you can get some of the greatest games ever made for $3 is astounding. yes this is technically a shooter.

DUSK - $8.99

an extremely fine shooter. excellent level design, outstanding sound design, amazing art direction. dusk isnt just a retro throwback, it pushes the style and mechanic of those classics forward to heights that were impossible back then. imo dusk is a modern classic when it comes it a tight, well designed shooter.

ULTRAKILL - $14.99

an extremely fine shooter. excellent level design, outstanding sound design, amazing art direction. didnt i just say that. its still true. ultrakill is a game that will test your reflexes, text your ability to adapt on the fly, and demand you do everything as stylishly cool as fuckin possible. when they call this game “devil may quake” theyre not joking. the skill ceiling is insanely high but the skill floor can be as low as you want it thanks to very granular difficulty and accessibility options. the game will push you to want to learn the tech and master everything, but it never stops you from just wanting to have fun above all else. theres also a demo! 

DEATHLOOP - $23.99

another excellent experience from the fine folks at arkane studios. deathloop combines combat that is fast and snappy thanks to unique powers and cool guns, with a story you slowly unravel piece by piece. the way the story unfolds and the immense amount of interaction you have with that almost makes you feel like youre playing a detective game. the game does an excellent job of making you feel like you are constantly making progress through exploration and discoveries that get you one step closer to your ultimate goal, or even just small things like discovering a new safer route to a target or getting a new powerful gun thanks to a side quest or secret area you stumbled upon.

HORROR

Dead Space - $4.99

re4....in space!!!! dead space is a horror classic imo. while obviously inspired by re4, it takes the design and aesthetic in its own direction, and is a more modern controlling experience compared to re4. the atmosphere and feel of dead space is intensely good, and even when you get used to the scares the game is still a tight and well executed third person shooter that demands smart use of ammo and careful avoidance of damage.

Resident Evil 2 (Remake) - $14.99

one of THE finest horror games ive ever played. the action is always tense, the strategy is interesting and difficult, and the atmosphere is top notch. what i said about dead space becoming a tight third person shooter after the scares wear off goes double here. re2 is a very very tactical experience that asks you to carefully consider your inventory and route every time you step out of a safe room, and the stress of that management can be scarier than any zombie. i cannot overstate how well tuned the game experience is. 

System Shock 2 - $2.49

yes ss2 is horror. one of the finest classic pc games you can play. frankly unmatched even by some modern outings. if youre an avid gamer you’ve surely played many a game that were inspired by the legendary tone and style of this game. i recc this game to anyone who wants to experience some truly iconic sci fi horror, but i will this game can be pretty brutal if you build a character wrong. if you dont have the patience for old school hardcore trial and error, dont be afraid to check a guide or two, but i promise the game is worth it.

ACTION

Bayonetta - $4.99

one of THE defining character action games. bayonetta is a modern masterpiece that should always be recc’d whenever possible. stylish action and impeccable mechanics, just dont ask me to explain the plot.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengence - $7.49

while mgr might be slightly more experimental and obtuse than your average modern character action, and to some it may be the meme game, it has earned its place as one of the greats imo. if you let yourself indulge in the game the plot is genuinely impactful and the combat is extremely rewarding once you put the work in to grasp the systems at play.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge - $22.49

a simply fantastic game. a complete no brainer if you love brawlers or tmnt. the art direction is beautiful and so so detailed for a sprite game, combat is simple to grasp and easy to execute, and the soundtrack elevates the game extremely. this game pivots away from the cheap quarter munching design of the games it takes its direct inspiration from, and instead supplements that with the ability to let you truly display skill and mastery of the game through combos, supers, and intelligent positioning. also it has 6 PLAYER CO-OP

disclaimer we havent played spirit of justice and ive heard it sucks so i kinda dont want to so we know like nothing about khurain. the only character from there that we know about is nahyuta. also this au has developed more into an "apollo pulls a thalassa" au but. tag's already set

this got long so im putting it under a readmore

-the leadup to the au is a bit vague so far, but basically. phoenix doesn't get disbarred, apollo is friends with him before the turnabout trump trial, maybe even works for him. he also knows klavier. in some versions of this au, him and klavier were dating

-yes there are multiple versions of this au, almost every au @vivi4n-c and i create has very little singular plot beyond an excuse to draw fun character designs and talk about angst scenarios

-kristoph still frames phoenix for murder, but apollo figures him out. kristoph flees, taking apollo as a hostage to europe. and then injures him in anger, giving him plenty of scars, including a large burn scar on the side of his face. the combination of smoke inhalation and khurain throat surgery for an injury kristoph gave him to his vocal cords permanently alters his voice. no more chords of steel :(

-also broke his hip, making apollo walk with a cane sometimes since it was already half-healed by the time he got to actually get surgery

-one of the injuries kristoph gives him is a head injury that leaves apollo with no memories past his childhood in khurain. so he assumes thats where he lived

-kristoph leaves behind a photo of apollo after said injury for the investigators to find. apollo looks dead in the photo, and kristoph tells them he is

-klavier quits music and throws himself into prosecuting and investigating, determined to catch his brother and bring him to justice

-phoenix and trucy take apollo's death REALLY hard, phoenix especially. he almost quits law

-before they can be found, apollo kills kristoph, robs all the stuff from his house including his old bracelet, and flees to khurain

-where he is reunited with his brother! yay!

-apollo didn't take the name "apollo" before going to america. before that, those he knew in khurain called him by the gender neutral name "suryasta." so thats what he thinks his name is, and what nahyuta calls him

-apollo finds the law familiar. between that and how easy it was to kill kristoph, plus his upbringing on the run, he assumes that he used to live a life of crime. he decides his memory loss is an opportunity for a fresh start, and studies to be a prosecutor, being his brother's co counsel in the meantime. he wears the mask all the time because he thinks anyone who recognizes him might wish him harm. either that, or they'll be happy to see him until they realize he has no idea who he is or who they are

-everything's great, he's starting his new life...and then an american diplomatic delegation shows up. the wright anything agency plus prosecutors edgeworth and gavin

-suryasta does NOT like them at all. the only american he remembers is kristoph, so to have his brother show up with a delegation of americans? he's immediately hostile. and nahyuta is even more so

-absolutely suryasta gets to threaten klavier with his sword, positioning it under his chin and warning him if he gives any indication that he's anything like his brother, they'll never stop finding the body

-naturally this fucks klavier up. someone he cared about a whole lot was killed by his brother, and now, halfway across the world, people think he's just like his brother.

-nahyuta is somehow even more hostile to klavier. he has gone full protective older brother mode

-in the moment klavier is too scared and angry to find a sword being under him hot but he catches suryasta doing his sparring training later, biceps on show, and is like. i love the kind of man who will literally just kill me

-klavier is determined to show suryasta that he's nothing like kristoph. dials the charm up to 11. and somehow, despite his wariness, suryasta finds himself warming up to klavier. far too fast. as if he's known him for far longer...

-somewhere along the way, klavier starts to fall for suryasta. feels like he can finally get over apollo and move on

-and suryasta gets an overwhelming sense of deja vu

-maybe klavier catches him humming songs he's never supposed to have heard. songs he wrote for apollo

-also this is an ace attorney au so comedy and hijinks ensue

-klavier: did phoenix ever tell you about the time the man he loved died and then came back

suryasta: no??? that sounds like a mindfuck omg

klavier: i know right haha, kinda a once in a lifetime thing amirite

-trucy brings mikeko to khurain. mikeko has become a crotchety little beast in her father's absence but she immediately runs to suryasta, winding around his legs and meeping so happily

-phoenix gives a very indirect shovel talk to suryasta while nahyuta gives the most direct shovel talk of all time to klavier

-phoenix: klavier you told me your least favorite musical was the phantom of the opera so whats the deal with ur new crush

-there are 3 different versions of how apollo's survival is exposed: the calm way, the angsty way, and the sexy way. ok never mind 4 and thats the "the wrights are a menace to society" way

Apollo justice is by far my favorite game. I won’t go into why too much, it’s a lot of major spoilers lmao, but so many of my favorite characters are introduced then. Apollo himself is my all time favorite character because he’s just such a funny guy? A big thing of his are his ‘chords of steel’ which is just him yelling really really loud. He does chords of steel exercises to practice yelling for court. His little hair prongs count to his height, he is 5’5 with them and 5 foot without. The detective in that game is my favorite detective, she isn’t technically introduced in that game shes a bit of a callback to an earlier case but god I love her. She snacks on chocolate snacks during every trial and investigation and is just generally a snarky asshole and I LOVE her for it. The prosecutor of that game is my favorite prosecutor. I won’t say much about him because I need you to witness his introduction in its full glory but I will say one of his court sprites is just. Doing an air guitar. There is a guitar riff and everything. It’s so funny. I just really love the characters in Apollo justice, their dynamics are so fun and the overall plot of the game is very fascinating. It’s so cool.

Oh my GOD one of my favorite dynamics is between Apollo justice and Trucy Wright. Again, don’t wanna say too much as to not spoil it for you. But!!! I can say that upon meeting the sibling energy immediately rolls off of them. Like the first case you do together starts with a quest to find Trucy’s missing magic panties (I will not elaborate) and the entire time she’s teasing Apollo about being awkward. They banter. They make jabs at each other. There’s a moment in their first trial together where Apollo thinks she’s in danger and he almost cries like bro you’ve known her for a day and I LOVE them so much

Okay so!!! Apollo justice and Phoenix Wright are two different characters, yes! They are both mcs of their respective games. Phoenix is the mc of the original trilogy, and Apollo is the mc of Apollo justice: ace attorney. In the games after that they share mc status with another attorney, but they never really get another game truly to themselves. Phoenix is a rookie attorney when Apollo is finishing school, Apollo saw Phoenix as an idol and looked up to him for many many years up until they finally met. Phoenix becomes a sort of mentor/father figure to Apollo in later lore, but I’ll leave that for you to find out. I hope that’s cleared some things up!!!!
