Year 1 - Episode 4 : PTA Meeting
Thoughts and remarks:
This is basically confirmed for me, that yes, Nightvale is a dictatorship. And has heavy censor laws, as seen with the votes. One could say someone is trying to put a vale on this town
I feel like this episode was a little darker than usual. Like it's starts usually very light hearted but then falls into madness. The 0 to 38 deaths really got to me. I really wasn't expecting that.
Cecil, hun, like just go talk to the guy. He is just a man, not the creation of god. Just be normal man ToT
I'm wondering why people still are at Nightvale ? because the living conditions just aren't good. Actually they are really bad. i'm thinking either they lived there their entire lives which makes everything "weird" appear "normal" OR it's something like dark magic, that's why the hooded figures are there. To keep the people from going anywhere.
Something i find a little bit disappointing is how they don't really have a linear structure. Like i don't think anything from previous episodes have had much of an impact on the plot (except Carlos's hair) Like we dont really know what happened at the end of episode 3, i was worried man :(
I'm hoping for a little more plot later down the line, but other than that, i'm just enjoying the ride B)

Welcome to Night Vale Episodes, Vol. 1
by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor
Episode 2: Glow Cloud
Representatives from local civil rights organizations have protested that officers had no legal grounds to search the vehicle, but they ceded the point when reminded by Secret Police officials that our backwards court system will uphold any old authoritarian rule made up on the fly by unsupervised gun-carrying thugs of a shadow government.
#authoritarianism #police
Episode 4: PTA Meeting
Several curious handball players in the court next to the auditorium actually popped their heads into the portal just to see what was on the other side of the vortex and came back dramatically changed. The players aged several thousand years in what bystanders experienced as only a few seconds. Those handball players now straddle the unenviable border of millennially wizened and cripplingly insane. Since psychological and emotional damages are no longer considered valid claims by the greater medical insurance community, we are still reporting zero injuries.
#healthcare #ushealthcare #insurance
Episode 11: Wheat & Wheat Byproducts
Representatives from the greater medical insurance community announced this week that a major insurance providers would no longer cover government-disseminated illnesses. These ailments were created to control undesirable populations and include AIDS, most cancers, irritable bowel syndrome, telekinesis, tingling, and any kind of food allergy.
Doctors advise that the best way to avoid acquiring any of these conditions is to limit questionable public activities. Try not to be in a lower economic class, and give regularly to an approved religious organization. Take these precautions and you should live a healthy (or at least medically insured) life.
#classism #healthcare
No citizen is above paying taxes. Well, except Marcus Vanston, but that's understandable because he's so wealthy. When you're worth as much as Marcus Vanston, you have proved your value to society through hard work and determination and are no longer required to show anyone any further proof that you care about anything or anybody else, because you obviously do.
#billionaires
Episode 12: The Candidate
Sleep heavily and know that I am here with you now. The past is gone and cannot harm you anymore. And while the future is fast coming for you, it always flinches first and settles in as the gentle present. This now? This us? We can cope with that. We can do this together, you and I. Drowsily but comfortably.
Episode 23: Eternal Scouts
Fear is consciousness plus life. Regret is an attempt to avoid what has already happened. Toast is bread held under direct heat until crisp.
The present tense of regret is indecision. The future tense of fear is either comedy or tragedy. And the past tense of toast is toasted.

never though of doing this but here's some misc lore for my version of the characters copy and pasted from the discord!
-----
Changed Ghosts name cause I wanted to
Gregory "Simon" Casket "Ghost":he/him, they/them. Demiboy, gay
Maxwell "Johnny" Windsor Toast:he/him. FtM trans, bisexual
Christopher/Chris "Colon" Ghostie:he/him, they/them. Nonbinary, polyam
Fred Spooker:xe/xem/xyr/xyrs/xemself, pup/pups/pupself. GNC Amab, panromantic
Katrina Evans:dai/daisy/dais/dais/daisyself. Afab, grayromantic
-----
Ghost:Filipino
Toast:Italian-British
Colon:Dutch-German
Spooker:Mexican (light skinned, similar to Quackity)
Katrina:Japanese
-----
•Ghosts mom is a gold digger and married their bio dad for the money and killed him when Ghost was 4
•Toast is very scared to be in another relationship after accidentally killing Mary
•Whoa! goes to school and Spooker and Colon take turns going to PTA meetings
•Cranky doesn't hate PIE per se, he just hates that Ghost has everything he doesn't
•Gavin and Jimmy get competitive with each other
•Toast, Ghost, Spooker, Colon, and Katrina have "horrible movie nights" where they watch bad rated movies
•despite Ghost being around 5'10, everyone in the PIE team can pick them up like they weigh nothing
-----
Ghost had their hoodie since he was a kid, it was a gift from their bio dad so he's kept it with them for this long since it reminds Ghost of him. It's become kind of a comfort object for him
-----
•all the P.I.E members hate fireworks
•Colon, Spooker, and Katrina hate them because the damage the environment and Ghost and Toast hate them cause they're loud and overstimulating
•Katrina bought the two of them noise canceling headphones
•Spooker and Colon grills food for fourth of july tho
-----
Spooker Lore!
he used worked with his dad, Chakalata Soup, and sister, Poppy, at their pop up style restaurant part time while he worked full time as a daycare assistant/teacher.
He originally joined P.I.E as a part time gig while Ghost was looking for a new partner while Toast was in jail but ended up enjoying it despite being terrified for the first time as joined full time while still working part time at the restaurant and day care
-----
Colon lore!
Colon used to teach gym at his old high school when he was in his early 20s after being graduating 2 years before but didn't find it to be as fulfilling as he thought it would be, so he moved to the U.S and became part of a small basket ball team when he was 28. But after the season was over he moved on and joined P.I.E on his 30th birthday
-----
some ghost lore
during his first investigation without Toast during their college days he had his first encounter with Jeremy Acachalla (I think Sally and Billy's cousin that was only in 1 episode), after trying to capture him Jeremy set off an explosion that had damaged Ghosts arm to the point it needed to be amputated and caused him to be blind in his left eye and partial deafness in his left ear
-----
I've changed the puppet arc so that it was Maxwell who sent Ghost to dimension hop to get home cause it was just Toast and Ghost during their fight so Maxwell separated them multiversially cause to him, they're weaker separated

Hello, @darling-dearest-detective!
I'm so sorry for how long I took! Thank you for your patience! Here's a top ten of my favorite Night Vale episodes!
Beware of spoilers up to episode #149.
10. #138 The Mudstone Abyss Part 3.
I love Kevin and he deserves happiness, that's it.
9. #17. Valentine
An early one, but what I love is the storyline, back then we were in the "Big Bad of the Week" phase, but if someone asked me "Hey, what's Night Vale?" This is the episode I would show them, I mean, #13. A Story About You is a great option as well, but I feel like this one shows the exact dichotomy of Weird/Mundane between "our" world and Night Vale, how our every day things are their worst nightmare (or at least something they fear) and viceversa.
8. #78. Cooking Stuff With Earl Harlan
Earl is one of my favorite characters, so when I got to hear him for the first time (I mean, we hear him in #65. Voicemail, but here you hear him actually interact with Cecil, instead of a one sided conversation, you get him more fleshed out as character), I was over the moon, and don't get me started on Roger! He sounds like an adorable kid that little Janice Palmer is probably friends with!
7. #108. Cal
This episode is beautifully tragic, I specially love the line "I could never tell my brother that I would never have a girlfriend", because, not to be sad, but if you're a queer person is very probable that this is a line that resonated with you, like it did with me. The mortifying ordeal of being known, am I right?
6. #25. One Year Later
What can I say? This episode is one of every fan's favorites! Especially if they ship Cecilos, which let's be honest, most of us do!
5. #95. Zookeeper
I love the twist regarding Joanna at the end of the episode. Plus, Cecil squeaking over the animals? Completely adorable and relatable!
4. #149. The General
Very recent in comparison to the rest listed here. The General is a brilliant ending for the Blood Space War arc, not to mention that is packed with content about our favorite couple and the weather is a mood.
3. #33. Cassette and #34. Yellow Helicopters
Alright, cheating a bit here, but there's a reason for it; when I was in my first year of college, about to have my first finals, I was very anxious about not being able to finish in time (I'm an art major, trust me when I say there was a lot to prepare), however my most vivid memory of that stressful time is painting while hearing Cecil's voice, telling me all about dorky scientists boyfriends and mysterious yellow helicopters and it distracting me from my anxious thoughts and stress. In case anyone is wondering, I passed.
2. #49. Old Oaks Doors A & B
One of the most exciting episodes, I was figuratively at the edge of my seat the whole time and getting to hear all the characters was fantastic, I could almost picture what the scenes would look like.
1. #4. PTA Meeting
My most favorite weather is featured in this episode, plus the background music and the simple yet clever storyline makes it my favorite episode of all time and a very relaxing one to listen to.
Well, this was fun! If anyone wants me to, I could totally do a Top Ten of my most favorite weathers!
Thank you so much for the ask~!

Every Episode of WTNV with Carlos Mentioned
No, I did not keep track of how long I spent on this. Anyway.
Total series count: 89 episodes
In the main podcast, anyway. The list includes at least partial context; however I wasn't counting the number of times Carlos was mentioned per episode, just if he was mentioned at all. So if he came up more than once I didn't necessarily record each time. Still, there are definitely spoilers.
I can't like… guarantee that I didn't miss something, unfortunately. However, I used both "Carlos" and "scientist" all the time, and I additionally used "boyfriend" from 26 onward and "husband" after 100. So it should be pretty close, at least.
I might go through and do live shows later. However, the answer for them is (almost) always yes, as most of them at least have a segment that Dylan Marron performs at some shows, so it'd be more a matter of checking for mentions of Carlos outside of that.
The reason I did this was to see if I was at all correct in my sense that Carlos has been mentioned less over time. My conclusion: well… sort of?
There actually was less of him than I thought in both year 1 and year 2 (year 1 in particular). However, years 3 and 4 had a LOT of him, and it has gone down from there through the end of year 7, when Carlos was only mentioned in 7 episodes total, with very few casual mentions by Cecil (vs when he had a particular role in what was going on).
So the problem (or at least, I consider it one) hasn't been going on for as long as I thought in the grand scheme of the series. I now believe that a significant part of the issue is just… Well, it has at this point been almost three years since that decline. Plus listening live makes everything feel drawn out, so there's a lot of perceived time in between individual mentions.
That being said, I think the actual conclusion is: it's maybe not as I thought, but I also wasn't completely imagining it, especially not looking at very recent events. We don't know what this year will hold, but year 7, as mentioned above, had the least of Carlos in it so far. There are also some significant gaps - Cecil mentions Carlos in episode 91, and after that the next time he comes up in year 5 is in 100 (!!!!)
He is mentioned in a solid majority of the series, but it's pretty front-loaded at this point. Also he has a few appearances in the first novel, and he's a central character in It Devours!
Finally, thanks so much @cecilspeaks because this wouldn't have been possible to do at all otherwise.
The complete list is as follows:
Year 1
episode 1: yes (well of course)
episode 2: no

may I politely request ⭐dealer's choice director's commentary⭐for pretty much any part of Love is All You Need to Destroy Your Enemies?
Did you mean: infodump about Chapter 5?
We start off in medias res during Pteranodon Attack-Gate from Episode 4: PTA Meeting. Since most of the fic runs parallel to WTNV’s storyline for the first ~two years, the way I narrowed down which events to feature was to read through the transcripts and take note of which ones had Carlos, which ones featured science/magic/time travel-related elements, which ones had weird discrepancies or unsolved details that could be explained by Carlos/science/magic/time travel/all of the above, and which ones I just liked a lot.
Incidentally, Cecil issues a correction that the winged reptiles in question were actually pterodactyls, not pteranodons, which was then promptly forgotten by the showrunners lol.
"—And then Kelly pulled her hamstring while they were doing the Fixing of a Nail position. I'm trying to convince her that she and Joe should do yoga together, I think it would really cut back on minor injuries and also they both look great in yoga pants. Anything new with you, Carlos?"
"Nothing that compares to... hamstring injuries," says Carlos, from his position on top of the Sciencemobile.
"All right," says Kate, adjusting an enormous pair of mirrored aviator shades. "Then describe the Barstow formation."
Since literal character doubling was such an important part of the plot, I had a lot of fun with thematic character doubling, too. Carlos and Kate (and the other grad students) are actually pretty close in age, and here we see her willing to put herself into danger to get the job done while casually chatting with her colleagues. Also, there’s a nice dose of karma for the books in Carlos having to deal with someone else oversharing details about their relationships, compounded by the fact that unlike his all of Kate’s are actually true. (In nicer doubling news: Kate is the one who gets her degree in science, has functional romantic relationships, AND continues to work in Night Vale, which are all eventually Carlos’ hashtag life goals.)
"Maybe it was future you," asks Julie, who does not sound appropriately concerned for the potentially diverted course of the Currents of Time. Or for the potentially diverted course of the already unlinear life of Carlos.
This is the first conversation where she’s ‘Julie’ in his mental narration. I enjoyed having her be hilariously unsympathetic to his concerns here, because her priorities are still very different, but it also sets up a baseline. She doesn’t bother worrying about hypotheticals from the weird shit, but actual hard data (like, Carlos not sleeping and having minor breakdowns in her lab) is what prompts her to share reactions besides SCIENCE! and snark.
His stomach roils at the thought of more time travel. "Some kind of illusion is more likely," he says: some person or creature temporarily assuming his form, probably for sinister purposes. He reluctantly adds those weird doubles from the sandstorm to his list of possible suspects, though his dissolved right in front of him in the middle of next March and there haven't been any sandstorms recently.
oh hey haha what’s that
One of my biggest pet peeves in fiction is when allegedly intelligent characters ignore obvious plot points so the writer can railroad the story in their chosen direction. On the other hand, it is genuinely difficult to avoid spoiling your plot twists if your main character is actively trying to figure them out. I leaned heavily on “the character has all the basic details… along with so much other information they can’t realistically narrow it down”, combined with some red herrings: an obvious one (illusion magic) and hopefully a more convincing one (time travel as the only relevant plot: it's DEFINITELY involved, but its presence is obscuring another facet of the plot altogether).
There's always a risk that astute readers will figure it out, but, like… so? That just means instead of shocking plot twist reveal, they get an “I KNEW IT!” reveal, which is equally satisfying in a different way. As long as the characters have convincing reasons for not figuring it out, it's hopefully still enjoyable to follow along with them as they wander around in the dark.
(And just for clarification: that was Doppel-Carlos crashing the town hall meeting when he and Dr. Raith were testing out time vortices.)
Andre hands him a copy of the Night Vale Daily Journal. “’Look your best to face the void. Smooth-chinned souls are most enjoyed’,” reads Carlos. “‘Burma-Shave.’”
"No, below the ads," says Andre.
1) ‘character reads wrong piece of information in paper’ is a classic goof (“There’s a sale at Penney’s!”) and I found it very amusing to repeatedly attribute it to Carlos, since he’s genuinely trying to locate the important information. Unfortunately for him, he lives in Night Vale and no longer has a filter for “useless nonsense”, because even the nonsense has proven relevant and/or kinda murdery before.
2) Burma-Shave! This was passed down to me as part of our Great American Roadtrip Family Lore (I come from a long line of roadtrippers) and it’s definitely the kind of kitschy 50s detail that fits so well in Night Vale.
"Oh!" says Cecil. "What were you studying?"
"Bioremediation for contaminated pit lakes via sulfur-reducing bacteria," says Carlos truthfully.
Why? Because I edited one of my friends’ papers on it, that’s why. (Birds kept landing on it and dying, which is also a very Night Vale detail.)
When he returns, he finds Cecil standing by the record player with his back against the wall, staring fixedly at Carlos’ vinyl copy of Ixnay on the Hombre.
One of the DF books (I think White Night) had a hilariously high number of characters showing up wearing band t-shirts, and Carlos’ was for The Offspring. (The original file name for this fic was Original Prankster, back when I thought it would be three chapters long.)
“It’s about a wizard stranded in a strange, uncharted desert territory,” [Cactus Judy] says serenely.
Cactus Jane! I decided to make her a recurring character because 1) she’s in a time travel episode (Episode 18: The Traveler), 2) both she and TMITJ had the detail where no one can remember their real name, which seemed significant, and 3) WTNV itself did not have very many recurring female characters at that point. She’s into Shakespeare because I personally knew a lot of relevant Shakespeare quotes, but also as a hint that’s she’s a lot older (and thus a lot more supernatural) than she seems: Shakespeare was a HUGE part of pop culture in the 19th century, particularly in the southwest. Theater companies used to make more money going on tour through states with precious metal mines than they did during their whole season in the big coastal cities, probably because jaded city folks never threw gold nuggets on stage to show their appreciation.
If life is a contest between good and evil, Cecil would be one of the people handing out stickers just for participating.
This is one of my favorite lines.
My plan is fool-proof! It's sheer elegance in its simplicity!
Look, if you enjoyed this fic, WTNV, and/or The Dresden Files, you should probably go watch The Middleman. Yes, I know it’s not streaming, do it anyway. Load up on antivenom and go rent it from your local library.
“Could you [create a time vortex]?""Oh, for sure," says Carlos. "All I'd need would be a couple years to do nothing but work on a highly illegal spell and figure out a way to steal an entire ley-line's worth of power and excise my sense of morality and self-preservation.”
And WHAT are the odds of THAT
It's not that Carlos doesn't like him. It just wouldn't be fair to lead him on when Carlos wouldn't actually—
Well, Carlos wouldn’t mind asking but he doesn’t normally go for—
Okay, Carlos could definitely make an exception for Cecil and—
And—
oh NO he accidentally used logic to make himself admit he has FEELINGS
One of the reasons I love this pairing is that you have Cecil, who is incredibly emotionally open (all the time, on public radio) as a distinct contrast to Carlos, who is so used to putting up a very specific facade that he even does it to himself and then struggles when he doesn't have it to rely on. It creates conflict, but it also means they have very different perspective they can share with each other.
"Did the earth move for you, too?" says Cecil.
"Bwuh?" replies Carlos.
"At the monitoring station," says Cecil, because right, they're talking about science and not about how Carlos may or may not have accidentally developed a tiny, tiny crush on Cecil, who is standing right in front of him and looking extremely interested in what he's saying and will commit his words to memory and lovingly repeat them for all the world, or at least all of Night Vale and anyone else who received the same odd death curse as Carlos, to hear.
"Oh. Hmm – unh," replies Carlos, then shakes his head. Not talking, that's the way to go. That way he won't accidentally say something he doesn't mean, or worse, something he does mean but probably shouldn't say. Cecil can ask him science questions and he can shake his head yes or no, and maybe refer him wordlessly to supplementary materials, and it will all be very professional and—
"Where did you get your shirt?" asks Cecil. "It fits you so well."
"I'll look at my notes and computer models and see if I can figure out what's going on," Carlos blurts out, and practically runs from the room.
One of the reasons I started writing this fic (SEPTEMBER 2013, BABY god I feel old) was because we all knew Carlos was immensely important to Cecil, but had relatively little information about him, and ALL of it was filtered through our unreliable narrator. So… I just kind of ran with that.
But on top of the obvious unreliability of “didn't notice Carlos was a wizard from a different series”, I wanted to do it on the smaller scale, too, and put a different spin on the touchstones of their growing relationship that everyone was already familiar with. So this interaction is now a crisis for both of them, and for dramatically/hilariously different reasons.
“If you’re worried about going native, I’ve got bad news for you, buddy, because you do more chanting than anyone I’ve met.”
Another one of my favorite lines.
“I’ve had to hunt down people I know before, and trust me, it’s not a fun date night!”
Between Molly and fanon interpretations of Cecil, Carlos’ type is apparently 1) weird tattoos, 2) unusually-colored hair, and 3) can kill him
There's a brief hiss from the TV's speakers, and then Cecil says, in a small, forlorn voice, “I don't know if he listens to me, sometimes.”
Carlos puts his head down and laughs bitterly.
I LOVE IRONY
But even though I wanted to subvert the surface meaning, Cecil DOES still have a point. He got a good look at Carlos’ soul when they first met and still fell in love instantly, but Carlos has a difficult time hearing that because at this point he fundamentally does not believe he’s worthy of that kind of love. In order to truly believe Cecil, he also has to start learning to love and accept himself. (It’s very much a work in progress, but nobody’s perfect.) The title isn’t just meant to refer to romantic love – self-love, friendship, familial love, and unconditional love for the humanity of his trash fire town are equally important, because they all support each other.

Podcast Challenge: April Recap
The Adventure Zone
Current
Kept updated with new episodes - got a new TTAZZ and we started Season 2, getting into TAZ: Amnesty in earnest!
This water monster is awesome and I’m so excited to get into a longer arc; I’m already highkey invested in Aubrey and Duck and I’m sure Ned will grow on me (Merle certainly did)
Alice Isn’t Dead
Current
We got teasers for Season 3, the live show, and then the start of S3!
Really happy this show is back, I forgot how much I loved its creepy mood and Jasika Nicole’s unreal voice
I’m very excited to see Keisha get to take action as opposed to just hunting information this season, and to have Alice by her side finally
The Bright Sessions *NEW* *CAUGHT UP*
Started this month!
Also caught up this month!
I binged this whole thing and fell deeply in love with these characters
I really really love all the representation - of sexuality, mental illness, struggles with addiction, survivor abuse, and so much more, and all of them feel so real and dealt with so honestly, and all in the context of a cool superpowers story
Can I Pet Your Dog? *NEW*
Started this month!
Episode 1-5, out of 141 currently
This show is super cute and such a silly and happy thing to listen to
Ear Hustle
Current
Finally the start of S2!
This is a really powerful podcast; they do such an extraordinary job with all of their interviews and creating the soundscape and everything, and if anything this season just seems even more in-depth than the last
The Flop House
Episode #24-#38/Movie Minute #26, out of 256 episodes currently
I really hope the audio will improve in the near future - it’s gotten better, but there’s still episodes where I go in and out of being able to hear them, or one of them will obviously be too far from or too close to the mic.
We moved from 2008 to 2009; I was reminded that The Dark Knight and the first Iron Man came out in the same year, which was bizarre
The McElroy Brothers Will Be in Trolls 2
Current
No new episodes
My Brother, My Brother, and Me
Episode 120-138, out of 404 currently
We’re slooooooowly getting to where MBMBAM actually becomes really good. I moved from twenty-doz to Twenty-DIRT so we’re officially within five years of current time, and I relived Obama’s reelection
Sawbones
Episode “Hysteria” - “Radiation Therapy” | 14/227 episodes currently
Was psyched to see hysteria in there, since I actually know a lot about that one!
In general this show continues to be both hilarious and instructive - and make for good stories I can pass on in the right company
Shmanners
Episode “Holiday Special: Valentine’s Day” - “Weddings: Attendance” | 9/113 episodes currently
Travis and Theresa are sweet, but they’re telling me very little that I don’t know - I wonder if it might actually get better once we get further into the show and we get past some of the more obvious topics
The Thrilling Adventure Hour
Episode #45-#70, out 220 where the podcast ended plus specials
I’ve fallen deeply in love with the Sparks Nevada storyline - I love all of the side characters and the world they’ve constructed.
The new War of the Worlds segment I’m not crazy about - I find it kind of difficult to follow because there’s a weird balance of plot but mostly just fast talking comedy
I’m also rapidly losing patience with the Captain Laserbeam segment, although I found the BatAquaman character hilarious, so if we can get a few more side characters like him to make regular appearances then I’ll enjoy it more
Beyond Belief continues to be a good time and my second favorite segment after Sparks Nevada
Welcome to Night Vale
Restarted from the beginning!
Currently posting reviews for each episode as I listen to them, see them here: Pilot | Glow Cloud | Station Management | PTA Meeting | The Shape in Grove Park | The Drawbridge
Episode 1-6, out of 127 currently
Really happy to have this show back in my life, I’ve missed it
Within the Wires
Current
No new episodes
Wonderful!
Episode 4-9, out of 31 currently
It’s growing on me, a little bit - but it’s still definitely a podcast to listen to while doing other things
The goal for May is to catch up with this podcast, because I’ve realized there really aren’t that many episodes (comparatively, I mean - certainly a lot less than The Flop House or MBMBAM)
#tal listens#taz#alice isn't dead#the bright sessions#cipyd#ear hustle#the flop house#the mcelroy brothers will be in trolls 2#mbmbam#sawbones#shmanners#tah#wtnv#wtw#wonderful!

“Five Ways to Parent an Extreme Child Through Elementary School”
Parenting is messy and hard. Teaching is messy and hard. Both are exhausting beyond words. So this is a list from a teacher who is also the parent of a child with invisible disabilities that will help to educate educators and prepare parents for what parenting our children through public education might look like.
5. Build your village. Words don’t do this step justice. This is the most important thing you can do to arm yourself for the battle of public schooling children with invisible disabilities.
As parents of children with behavior disorders, we face judgment daily, but there is no glare like the look of an educator who makes you feel that he or she disapproves of your child or your ability to parent them.
Disclaimer: We need to admit that sometimes we take things like this personally when they weren’t intended in that way. I am both an educator and a mother of a child with behavioral disabilities, so I feel compelled to speak for both sides.
I have received daily notes, letters from daycare, calls to my work, referrals from the bus driver, and seen weeks of sad faces or heated notes in my son’s planner. They all have one thing in common: When I read them, it made me angry, hurt my feelings, or made me feel defeated, but it always made me defensive of my son.
I would think: “They just don’t understand.” “They can’t expect him to behave like all of the other kids!” “They are just nit-picking him.”
Regardless of how I might feel, until we can afford for one of us to stay home and to homeschool our son, or to send him to a private school (which will not be in the foreseeable future), we must be able to remain calm and keep the peace with his educators.
To do this, we must build our village. We must find people with whom we can connect with and reach out to—someone we can text at 7 a.m. when my son just threw his shoe, at 3 p.m. because he was kicked off the bus again, or at 10 p.m. when he screams in a voice straight from the nether realms, “You are the stupidest mommy I have ever known!” You need someone who hears you, someone who gets you, someone who lives your reality.
So when you get the fourth note from your child’s teacher saying that Sally couldn’t keep her hands to herself and she had to move her clothespin down for talking out of turn or moving during carpet time, you can call your fellow villagers and scream, “This is insane! Do they really expect her to be able to sit through a 30-minute story time!? Who can even do that!?”
4. Prepare for war. Parenting is an ugly job. It is food spills and dirty diapers and weird smells in your car. It is messy hair and a questionable number of days in a row without showering. It is carpooling and sports practices, homework and packing lunches. All of that is exhausting in a way that people who aren’t parents will never truly understand.
When you add to that the endless medication adjustments, calls to specialists, visits to new doctors in hopes for different results, IEP and case study meetings with schools, and scouring the shelves of multiple stores to find old packaging because my sensory processing disorder child refuses to eat the blueberry cereal bars he has eaten daily for two years because he swears that the new packaging makes it taste different—it can seem completely impossible.
Battling a teacher, a bus driver, a PTA mom, a guidance counselor, a school system will not come easy. There will be haters. There always are.
There will be parents who don’t know our children and who are unforgiving when our son hits their son on the playground because he was reacting to them being in their face and he couldn’t articulate the way it made him feel. They couldn’t process it fast enough to tell the teacher. They acted on their feelings out of impulse, and we weren’t there to intervene.
3. Understand that you won’t always be…understood. This one is painful. Truly. I can sit here and type these words knowing that this afternoon something will happen with my son that will cause me to go into a panic, get defensive, or lose control and lash out in anger at him. No one will fully understand what that feels like and, for that, I should be grateful.
Not every parent is cut out for our job. The children with whom we have been entrusted to raise—the ones who make us crazy, break our hearts, bruise our skin, and dent our walls—these are not children meant for just any run- of-the-mill parent.
Parenting is the hardest job you will ever have, but these kids….are, well, a special treat. Some moments they are the sweetest angels and you are reminded why you would do anything for them. But all that can change in a second. So we shouldn’t expect others to understand our journey, because it isn’t theirs to take.
The teachers try to maintain growing class sizes, battle issues each child brings in from home, and teach kids who are all on different levels of learning—usually all while outperforming their previous test scores and keeping a safe environment and impressing the other teachers with their Pinterest-perfect room décor. I know. It is brutal.
When we are met with the disapproving glance of other parents, the tired teacher, the principal whose mind is still in the meeting she just attended, or the guidance counselor who doesn’t really have time to counsel because he has to balance testing schedules with class schedules and credits and parent complaints, maybe it is us who should try to be understanding.
Please know that this comes from a mother who sat, unable to speak through sobs, while she showed the behavior chart to guidance counselors, teachers, and a principal where red pen had recorded four pages of physical outbursts from my son…over only two weeks. That did not include angry outbursts or refusal to comply on the basis of, “Oh, well, it’s a Tuesday.” This was only what he had done when his behavior escalated and became physical. I was crying. My hand holding the papers shook as the educators on the other side of the table told me that my son did not qualify for an IEP, a 504, or special accommodations. I felt utterly hopeless and as if they just did not understand.
You’re right. They don’t understand. And that is OK. But we must move on to step number two.
2. Keep fighting. For us, this battle will never end. So now that you’ve built your village and prepared for battle, get the armor out because you’re going to need it.
When people tell you that they cannot accommodate your daughter, you find another way.
When the teacher says she can’t give different work to your child, only extra work if they need to be challenged, you ask someone else.
When the school officials say they don’t offer a gifted program until third grade and your son is in kindergarten, you continue to go up the ladder until someone will hear you.
When the bus driver writes your child up again for not sitting still when his bus ride is an hour long and he can’t have his medicine until 3 o’clock, you calmly try to explain your situation. If they don’t listen, you go to the principal, the transportation manager, and whoever else will listen.
When I tell you to prepare for war, I certainly hope you won’t need the armor, but I’ve used mine many times and my child is only five.
Use your village so you don’t bust up in the school like an episode of Jerry Springer. Let your villagers calm you down, let you vent, and encourage you before you take the crazy train to the school board office. You laugh now, but the day will come!
Don’t stop fighting. Many times, especially while our children are very young, we are their only voice. Keep fighting for them. Our children need to know that we are their biggest advocates.
1. Breathe. You will cry in meetings. It is inevitable. At least it is for me, because that is what I do when I am overwhelmed and angry and can’t just flip out like I want to do.
In order for me to survive, I need to understand that, while it may feel like they just have no clue about my child or they are personally attacking my ability to parent him, they are (in most cases) sincerely trying to do the best they can while following school policies and procedures.
As a teacher, I can tell you that what is best for the individual child doesn’t always follow the handbook. What this means for me as the parent of a child with multiple behavioral disabilities, a sensory disability, and who is also academically gifted, is that I have to breathe a lot. Sometimes it is because I don’t feel truly heard by Briggs’s school, but usually it is because my husband and I are forced to make a decision without knowing for certain if it is the right choice for him.
We were told to consider skipping him a grade or even two. I laughed. I mean, this is the kindergartner who just de-pants himself at a birthday party for comfort and you think he can handle his life with eight-year-olds!? No ma’am. But, academically, we do fight an uphill battle, because when he is bored he acts out, so he must remain challenged.
So, breathe. It won’t always make sense, but if we act out like our children do, it won’t solve anything. You know, like we tell them when they are on the brink of a complete loss of insanity?
1A. Don’t be afraid to try what no one else will. What works for other children is unlikely to work for our kids. So, while Legos are a great mind activity for our son, they are also the source of many a meltdown because a piece that is nearly invisible to the human eye just won’t fit quite how he wants it. So the bucket goes flying and a barrage of tiny blocks that seem to be made of shrapnel rain down from the ceiling.
Some kids can read independently and sit quietly at their desks; others may be able to play educational games on a tablet or keep their hands in their laps while sitting criss-cross applesauce during circle time. Those children are not my son.
Don’t be afraid to try what seems different or weird. Most days, my kid eats dinner standing up. My son sleeps a lot of nights on the hardwood floor, he rolls his shorts up to lengths only known by men on the golf course over 70. And when he needs to calm himself, he punches a punching bag and hits his head on the couch cushions. I no longer question his process. We roll with what works at the time.
This road is long. Public education for children with invisible disabilities may be ugly, and it may get messy, but I can assure you that if you build your village, you ready yourself for battle, you understand that you might not always be understood, you never stop fighting, and you remind yourself to breathe, that we will all get through this and our children will be the stronger for our efforts.

Lucy is a Chaperone
S1;E27 ~ April 8, 1963
Synopsis
Lucy and Viv chaperone a Spring break trip for Chris and her friends. Feeling they don't fit in, they try to act like teenagers in order to have fun with the girls and their friends.
Regular Cast
Lucille Ball (Lucy Carmichael), Vivian Vance (Vivian Bagley), Candy Moore (Chris Carmichael)
Jimmy Garrett (Jerry Carmichael) and Ralph Hart (Sherman Bagley) do not appear in this episode, although Jerry is mentioned.
Guest Cast
Hanley Stafford (Kenneth Westcott, Principal at Danfield High School) was born Alfred Austin in 1899 and changed his name to Hanley Stafford to honor his birthplace, Hanley, Staffordshire in England. He was a radio actor famous for playing Baby Snooks’ father. This episode of “The Lucy Show” is his final screen credit.
In real life, Kenneth L. Westcott is the name of the show's property master. To remind him who she is, Lucy mentions that she baked a pineapple upside down cake for the last PTA bake sale.
Charlotte Lawrence (Elizabeth Westcott, below left) played one of Ethel Mertz's bridge-playing pals in “No Children Allowed” (ILL S2;E22) and neighbor Marge in “The Homecoming” (S5;E6). This is her only appearance on “The Lucy Show” and her penultimate screen credit.
Patty Garrity (Debbie Westcott, above center) started movie acting at age 6 and appeared as Dixie Pollit, one of the “no-neck monsters” in 1958's Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. In a 1965 episode of “My Three Sons” she played a girl with a crush on Robbie Douglas, played by Don Grady, who plays Bill in this “Lucy Show” episode. Her final screen role was as Sheila in The Trouble With Angels (1966). She died in 1991 at age 42.
Don Grady (Bill, below left) famously played Fred MacMurray's eldest son Robbie Douglas on “My Three Sons” from 1960 to 1972. This episode of “The Lucy Show” (his only series appearance) aired on CBS the same week that he appeared on ABC as Robbie Douglas. At the time, he co-starred with William Frawley as Uncle Bub. Frawley played Fred Mertz on “I Love Lucy” who will make his final screen appearance on “The Lucy Show” in 1965. Grady died in 2012 at the age of 68.
Eddie Hodges (Georgie, above right) was a child actor who created the role of lisping Winthrop Paroo in The Music Man on Broadway in 1957. In the 1962 film version his role was taken by Ron Howard, who worked on the Desilu lot filming “The Andy Griffith Show.” Hodges returned to Broadway in the play Critic's Choice (1960), which was made into a film starring Lucille Ball in 1963. His role in that film was taken by Ricky Kelman, who was seen in a 1973 episode of “Here's Lucy” coincidentally starring Andy Griffith. Hodges left acting in 1974 and eventually became a mental health counselor in his native Mississippi.
In the previous episode, Chris's friend Georgie was played by Ronald Keith.
Lucie Arnaz (Cynthia) is the real-life 11 year-old daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. She was born in 1951 just before the premiere of “I Love Lucy.” Lucille Ball was actually pregnant during the filming of the show’s pilot. Despite rumors to the contrary, Lucie Arnaz never appeared on “I Love Lucy.” She made an uncredited appearance on this series in “Lucy is a Referee” (S1;E3) as one of the spectators at the football game. This is the second of her two appearances as Chris’s friend Cynthia, a character mentioned in the premiere and in many subsequent episodes. Lucie Arnaz, however, returned to the show in later seasons in other roles. She also appeared with her mother and brother Desi Jr. on “Here’s Lucy.”
Karen Balkin (Vicki) made her screen debut as Mary Tilford in the long-awaited film version of Lillian Hellman's controversial Broadway play The Children's Hour. Her final screen credit (of only four) was also set in a girl’s boarding school, 1974's Our Time.
Jimmy Carter (Guitarist, above left) made only one more screen appearance after this episode of “The Lucy Show.” The year before he had played Herman on “Leave It to Beaver” for three episodes.
This episode was aired opposite the 35th Annual Academy Awards telecast on ABC. Nominees What Ever Happened to Baby Jane, That Touch of Mink, and Two for the Seesaw were all mentioned in “No More Double Dates” (S1;E21). In attendance were future “Lucy Show” and “Here’s Lucy” guest stars as Shelley Winters, Ann-Margret, Ed Begley, Victor Buono, Joan Crawford, Robert Goulet, Edward G. Robinson, and Robert Stack.
This week TV Guide celebrated the 10th anniversary of their first national edition. Just as Lucy was on the cover in 1953, she is on it again this week.
A surf rock version of the show's theme is played during the episode's opening credits (following the show's regular animated opening). Previously, this theme was adapted for a marching band in “Lucy is a Referee” (S1;E3).
Although the state where the fictional beach town of Sandy Cove is located is never specified, Lucy notes that it was a long drive from Danfield. It could possibly be meant to be Sandy Hook, New Jersey. Like the Brewster street scenes in “Lucy Drives a Dump Truck” (S1;E24), the exterior locations were filmed on a sound stage.
Chris's packing list of Sandy Cove:
6 pairs of Capri pants
4 sweaters
2 pairs of Bermuda shorts
3 sweatshirts
1 pair of jeans
1 jacket
4 pairs of sneakers
2 shifts
5 bathing suits
1 dress
Capri pants were introduced by fashion designer Sonja de Lennart in 1948. The name derives from the Italian isle of Capri, where they rose to popularity in the late 1950s and early '60s. Capris' acceptance in the United States was influenced by the TV series “The Dick Van Dyke Show” (1961-66) where they were famously worn by Mary Tyler Moore (above).
VIV: “Lucy? Do I look like a new bride?”
LUCY: “You look more like an old bee-keeper.”
Lucy and Viv break out the mosquito netting as protection against bites - but end up needing protection against bats, instead!
When trying on the blonde wig hat, one of the girls says she feels like Jayne Mansfield. Jayne Mansfield (1933-1967) was a major Hollywood sex symbol of the 1950s and early 1960s. The actress and model was known for her platinum blonde hair and her provocative personal life which frequently made headlines. Vicki and Debbie remark that their wigs are red and blonde, just like Lucy and Viv.
While talking about boys, Chris compares one young man to Paul Newman (above). At the time of filming, quietly sexy actor Paul Newman (1925-2008) had been nominated for two Oscars; the first for Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, which coincidentally featured Patty Garrity (Debbie Westcott) and of course, Elizabeth Taylor.
This marks the first appearance of Lucy’s transistor radio. It will be seen throughout the series, even when she relocates to California.
When the girls are dancing, Viv mistakes the Mashed Potato for the Jitterbug. When Lucy attempts the steps, Viv remarks that she's got “lumps in her gravy.” The Mashed Potato was a popular dance craze of 1962 made famous by James Brown. It was performed in the John Waters film Hairspray set in 1962 Baltimore. A companion dance song was titled (appropriately) “Gravy”.
Lucy teaches Viv the current teenage slang:
Choice, Groovy, Tough = Good
Fink, Creepy, Scuzzy, Grumpy, Drippy, Raunchy, Flaky = Bad
Diddly Diddly Diddly = And So Forth
Split = Leave
Cracks You Up = Someone is Funny
Having a Blast = Enjoying Yourself
Some examples of slang from Lucy and Viv's youth: “Greetings, gate. Let's cut a rug. Hubba hubba hubba!”
The framed travel poster in the kitchen is by René Jacques from 1960. It depicts the aqueducts Pont de Garde, near Nimes, in Provence, France.
Lucy's wardrobe when she attempts to fit in with the kids has her wearing the dark-haired fun wig and a shift dress with the face of a smiling girl with free-flowing pigtails on the back.
Lucy and Viv perform “Big Girls Don't Cry,” a song written by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio and originally recorded by The Four Seasons. It hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 17, 1962, around the time this episode was being scripted. It has been heard on many film and TV soundtracks and is currently associated with the Broadway musical Jersey Boys.
Lucy suggests doing the “Surfer's Stomp,” but the gang ends up doing the “The Limbo” instead. “Surfer's Stomp” was a 1962 hit for The Mar-Kets, reaching #31 on the Hot 100 List. In “The Limbo” dancers must pass under a horizontal pole that is at first at chest level, but then consistently lowered. It originated on the island of Trinidad. It was popularized by Julia Edwards (known as the 'First Lady of Limbo') who appeared in several films, particularly Fire Down Below (1957). Chubby Checker released “The Limbo Rock” in 1962 further popularizing the dance.
Bill refers to Lucy as an “overgrown Gidget.” Gidget is a fictional character created by author Frederick Kohner (based on his teenage daughter, Kathy) in his 1957 novel, Gidget the Little Girl with Big Ideas. The novel follows the adventures of a teenage girl and her surfing friends on the beach in Malibu. The name Gidget is a contraction of ‘girl’ and ‘midget'. The character first appeared on screen in 1959 played by Sandra Dee and two sequels in 1961 and 1963. A television adaption starring Sally Field premiered in 1965. The name has become synonymous with any female surfer or beach bum.
Callbacks!
This is the second episode in a row to have scenes at Danfield High School. This is also the second episode in a row that Lucy tries to recapture her youth and wears a black wig. The previous episode was “Lucy and Viv Take Up Chemistry” (S1;E26).
Lucille Ball also wore (partial) scuba gear while Lucy Ricardo was shopping for her Florida trip in “Lucy Meets Orson Welles” (ILL S6;E3). She does so again as a salesperson in the sporting goods department during “Lucy Bags a Bargain” (S4;E17, center).
Lucy Ricardo was seen at a 'sandy cove' when stranded on a “Desert Island” (ILL S6;E8) off Miami Beach.
Fast Forward!
In a 1967 episode of “The Lucy Show” a female dancer in a beatnik club is wearing the same (or same type of) shift dress worn by Lucy in the beach scene, with the face of a smiling girl with free-flowing pigtails on the back. Here the face is worn on the front. It is interesting to see it in color for the first time!
Goofs & Blunders!
Packing Predicament - The striped top hanging in the background is worn by Cynthia in subsequent scenes, so why is it in the Carmichael kitchen? Cynthia (Lucie Arnaz) and Chris (Candy Moore) are definitely not the same size so couldn’t possibly share clothes.
“Lucy is a Chaperone” rates 3 Paper Hearts out of 5

He was best known for his 1981 album Breakin' Away and for singing the theme song of the late-1980s television series Moonlighting. Jarreau was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the fifth of six children. His website refers to Reservoir Avenue, the name of the street where he lived. His father was a Seventh-day Adventist Church minister and singer, and his mother was a church pianist. He and his family sang together in church concerts and in benefits, and he and his mother performed at PTA meetings.[2] He was student council president and Badger Boys State delegate for Lincoln High School. At Boys State, Jarreau, was elected governor.[3] He went on to attend Ripon College, where he also sang with a group called the Indigos. Jarreau graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology.[1] He went on to earn a master's degree in vocational rehabilitation from the University of Iowa, worked as a rehabilitation counselor in San Francisco, and moonlighted with a jazz trio headed by George Duke. In 1967, he joined forces with acoustic guitarist Julio Martinez.[1] The duo became the star attraction at a small Sausalito night club called Gatsby's. This success contributed to Jarreau's decision to make professional singing his life and full-time career. Going full-time[edit] Al Jarreau in Wrocław, Poland; June 25, 2006 Al Jarreau headlining "Jazz in Kiev 2008" festival In 1968, Jarreau made jazz his primary occupation. In 1969, Jarreau and Martinez headed south, where Jarreau appeared in such Los Angeles hot spots as Dino's, The Troubadour, and Bitter End West. Television exposure came from Johnny Carson, Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin, Dinah Shore, and David Frost. He expanded his nightclub appearances performing at The Improv between the acts of such rising-star comics as Bette Midler, Jimmie Walker, and John Belushi. During this period, he became involved with the United Church of Religious Science and the Church of Scientology, but he later dissociated from Scientology. Also, roughly at the same time, he began writing his own lyrics, finding that his Christian spirituality began to influence his work. In 1975, Jarreau was working with pianist Tom Canning when he was spotted by Warner Bros. Records. On Valentine's Day 1976 he sang on the 13th episode of NBC's new Saturday Night Live hosted, that week, by Peter Boyle (Young Frankenstein, Everybody Loves Raymond). Soon thereafter he released his critically acclaimed debut album, We Got By, which catapulted him to international fame and garnered him a German Grammy Award. A second German Grammy would follow with the release of his second album, Glow. One of Jarreau's most commercially successful albums is Breakin' Away (1981), which includes the hit song "We're in This Love Together". In 1984, his single "After All" reached 69 on the US Hot 100 chart and number 26 on the R&B chart. It was especially popular in the Philippines. His last big hit was the Grammy-nominated theme to the 1980s American television show Moonlighting, for which he wrote the lyrics. Among other things, he was well known for his extensive use of scat singing, and vocal percussion. He was also a featured vocalist on USA for Africa's "We Are the World" in which he sang the line, "...and so we all must lend a helping hand." Another charitable media event, HBO's Comic Relief, featured Al in a duet with Natalie Cole singing the song "Mr. President", written by Joe Sterling, Mike Loveless and Ray Reach. Jarreau took an extended break from recording in the 1990s. As he explained in an interview with Jazz Review: "I was still touring, in fact, I toured more than I ever had in the past, so I kept in touch with my audience. I got my symphony program under way, which included my music and that of other people too, and I performed on the Broadway production of Grease. I was busier than ever! For the most part, I was doing what I have always done … perform live. I was shopping for a record deal and was letting people know that there is a new album coming. I was just waiting for the right label (Verve), but I toured more than ever."[4] In 2003, Jarreau and conductor Larry Baird collaborated on symphony shows around the United States, with Baird arranging additional orchestral material for Jarreau's shows. He toured and performed with Joe Sample, Chick Corea, Kathleen Battle, Miles Davis, David Sanborn,[5] Rick Braun, and George Benson. He also performed the role of the Teen Angel in a 1996 Broadway production of Grease. On March 6, 2001, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, at 7083 Hollywood Boulevard on the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and La Brea Avenue. In 2006, Al Jarreau appeared in a duet with American Idol finalist Paris Bennett during the Season 5 finale and on Celebrity Duets singing with actor Cheech Marin. In 2010, Al Jarreau was a guest on the new Eumir Deodato album, with the song "Double Face" written by Nicolosi/Deodato/Al Jarreau. The song was produced by the Italian company Nicolosi Productions. On February 16, 2012, he was invited to the famous Italian Festival di Sanremo to sing with the Italian group Matia Bazar. On February 8, 2017, after being hospitalized for exhaustion, he cancelled his remaining 2017 tour dates and retired from touring.[6] Personal life Jarreau was married twice. His first marriage, to Phyllis Hall, lasted from 1964 to 1968. His second wife was model Susan Elaine Player, whom he married in 1977. Jarreau and Player had one son together, Ryan. It was reported on July 23, 2010 that Jarreau was critically ill at a hospital in France, while in the area to perform a concert at nearby Barcelonnette, and was being treated for respiratory problems and cardiac arrhythmias.[7] He was taken to the intensive-care unit at Gap late on July 22, 2010.[8] Jarreau was conscious, in a stable condition and in the cardiology unit of La Timone hospital in Marseille, the Marseille Hospital Authority said. He was expected to remain there for about a week for tests.[9] In June 2012, Jarreau was diagnosed with pneumonia, which caused him to cancel several concerts in France.[10] Jarreau made a full recovery and continued to tour extensively until February 2017.[11][12] In 2009 children's author Carmen Rubin published the story Ashti Meets Birdman Al, inspired by the music of Al Jarreau. He wrote the foreword for the book and read from it across the world. Al and Carmen worked together to promote literacy and the importance of keeping music alive in children. Death[edit] Al Jarreau suffered pneumonia and some effective seizures and was hospitalized. He died on February 12, 2017 at the age of 76. "It's not joining the Elks or the Moose Lodge or something, but it is a fraternity/sorority... People helping and coming together. A lot of this was formed by Gregg. If you needed help, Gregg was there to help," said Scott May, organist for the Ides of March and project manager/artist liaison for Hammond USA. "That selflessness and brotherhood became the order of the day, and it's been wonderful to have that with so many artists and so many big names. It started with Gregg, and now we perpetuate. More than 20 Hammond artists will come to together Wednesday, Feb. 22 at the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles for the sixth annual Hammond Sound Soul Summit. The concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m., features musicians from across the genres including rock, jazz, pop, Gospel and more. During this year's Summit - the first time the event is held in the Chicago area - they will celebrate the life of Gregg Gronowski, Hammond USA's director of sales and marketing. Gronowski, who is credited with helping to create the family-like relationship among the Hammond musicians that's affectionately dubbed "HamFam," died in August 2016 following a massive stroke. All proceeds from the concert will benefit Gronowski's family. "He was a great guy, a special guy. He's brought together this Hammond family," said Robby Robinson, longtime music director for Frankie Valli. "He was kind of the Papa Bear of the HamFam. All of this Hammond organ people have this affinity and brotherhood so to speak, that it really is kind of a family. It's really special, and I'm so blessed to be a part of it." The night of music features what May calls "an unprecedented lineup" of Hammond musicians across a variety of musical genres. "You don't get to see these artists together in one place. You'll never see Mark Stein from Vanilla Fudge and Dr. Lonnie Smith together in the same show," May said. "You'll never see some of the Gospel artists and some of the rock artists together in the same show. It demonstrates the depth of Hammond family and the camaraderie we have." Among those performing are jazz legend Dr. Lonnie Smith, Mark Stein of Vanilla Fudge, Emiko, Rev. Jimmie Smith, Red Young of Eric Burdon's The Animals, Kevin McKendree of the Brian Setzer and Delbert McClinton bands, Yates McKendree, former Tower of Power musician Ellis Hall, Kim Tibbs, Jon Hammond, Jim Afredson, Tommy Leershen, Justin Dillard, Anthony Williams of the Bobby Jones Gospel TV show, Marine LaCoste of Uncle Kracker, Gary Swan from Etta James' band, Steven Eaklor, Peter Gallinari of Leslie West's and Richie Scarlett's bands and Jim Kozak. Also performing is May with the Ides of March featuring Jim Peterik, as well as Robinson with members of the Jersey Boys cast. "We're going to do a medley of Frankie Valli songs," Robinson said. "I've been living those songs for ever and ever. " During the Summit, musical equipment donated by Addison-based Hammond – including an organ – will be raffled, with those proceeds also going to Gronowski's family. "Gregg was very, very special to the company. He wasn't a keyboard player, he was a bass player by trade," May said. "He learned a lot about the instrument and did a lot to bring the company up to a modern level." Robinson said Gronowski was a genuinely warm person who connected with everyone, and that he had a real passion for music and the Hammond organ. That passion for Hammond is something Robinson shares. "I've been playing Hammond since the 60s. I own eight Hammond organs," said Robinson, who is also a composer and producer. What is it about the instrument that inspires such devotion? "There is no other organ in pop music or rock music or Gospel music that has become the standard bearer for the instrument in any of those genres. It just doesn't happen," Robinson said. "It's a one of a kind instrument. It's hard to quantify exactly … but there's no doubt that anybody who is Hammond organ player has a love affair with the instrument. "I love to play piano but when I sit down at the Hammond organ, it's the most fun thing I do in music," he said. "There's a special connection that I cannot articulate what it is, because it's such an emotional experience that it's hard to define it. But it is consistent and it is real." And during the Sound Soul Summit, audience members will have a chance to share that experience when the artists perform. "Guitarists get all the press. Everybody loves guitar players. They get all the press and all the action. The keyboard players kind of sit back," May said. "Now this is time for the keyboard players to step to the front of the stage and shine." Slightly Shortened WTNV Episode List
Okay so my charming wife asked me to put together a shortened list of WTNV episodes to help them catch up.
Aaand I still only got it down to 89 episodes. I’m going to share this anyway, though, because I put a lot of thought into it. Like I was originally trying to keep more in, based on maintaining some pacing/narrative space between certain episodes. That didn’t work.
If nothing else, I know a lot of people stopped around year 3 or 4; this has a combined total of about 35 episodes from years 5-7, so it should make catching up easier if you want to hop back in for recent stuff!
Mostly this was made from the angle of: what will help keep the continuity from getting confusing? I also tried to keep in at least some episodes that are just weird and fun and not connected to anything, because those are also a cool part of the show. If nothing else, a lot of continuity-central episodes have fun weirdness, too.
Also yes I know time is weird, but there’s still continuity from an audience perspective! And this is an extremely ymmv thing, but I do feel like sometimes things can have more weight/impact if you know what led up to them! It can, at the very least, change the experience.
So, the list:
Year 1
PTA Meeting (4) Feral Dogs (10) A Story About You (13) The Man in the Tan Jacket (14) The Phone Call (16) The Sandstorm (19A+B) Poetry Week (20) The Mayor (24) One Year Later (25)

For the most part, I didn’t make changes based on preference. I did leave out most Kevin-centric episodes past year 3, because I’m just not really a fan of Kevin. But I also cut some favorites.
Those Kevin-centric episodes are: Triptych (73), All Smiles’ Eve (120), and The Mudstone Abyss (135-137)
Episodes that I would highly recommend if you get a chance:
Station Management (3) Faceless Old Woman (26) Cassette (33) Numbers (42) The Retirement of Pamela Winchell (52) Well of Night (72) Michigan (99) Save Dark Owl Records (141)
#welcome to night vale#wtnv#wtnv ramblings#years 2 and 4 were the hardest for me#5 was also tricky bc there's a lot going on#it's good stuff though tbh
