oh my god Jade I love coworker James!!! can we please see Remus and Sirius actually catching them !:)))
thank you for requesting! fem, 1.3k
James Potter is eating his lunch in peace when you find him in the staff kitchen. It was nice to eat in silence —he won’t get any of that now.
“Hi, lovely,” he says.
“Stop,” you say instantly, pulling the fridge door open to extract your lunch. James watches the curve of your shoulder, your arm, even your leg as you bend to grab your Tupperware before straightening out.
“What are you having?”
“Can’t we eat in mutual, agreeable silence?” you ask.
James thinks about it, but when you’re around he can’t seem to keep his mouth shut. “No, maybe tomorrow, though.”
“Brilliant.”
You sit down —in the chair next to his, he’d like to point out, and not the one opposite— and open your Tupperware. You have a salad with what looks like diced tofu, grilled and honeyed, salt and pepper cracked over dressed leaves of kale and lettuce.
“That looks good.”
“You’re so healthy, I thought I’d outdo you,” you say, popping your foldable fork from the Tupperware lid.
“You’ve managed it.” James is eating chicken katsu in wraps with a chilli sauce, lettuce, and finely sliced tomato. For his afters, he has three bags of crisps and a tangerine he’s going to share with you, two slices to one.
For a little bit, you both chew and say nothing. After a few minutes he reaches under the table to hold your thigh. A few minutes more and you’re letting your leg fall against him, smiling around bites of salad.
“Do you wanna come over tonight?” he asks.
“Maybe you should come to mine?” you ask, a shade of timid. “I know you’ve never been, it’s not nice as yours is, but at least Sirius won’t walk in on us.”
James wonders if that means what he thinks it does, or if you’re just sick of being kissed and then shot away from. If it means the first thing, he really needs to ask if you want to be his girlfriend. Like, today. He’s worried you’re gonna say no, but he doesn’t want you thinking that intimacy from him is casual, because it really won’t be.
“We can get dinner first?” he suggests, feeling along your knee gently.
“Where do you want to go?”
“Where do you want to, pretty girl?”
You shift ever so slightly in your chair. “I don’t know. Where’s somewhere nice? Or do you want casual, like, the Chinese buffet by the cinema? It’s quite nice in there.”
“I wanna go wherever you fancy,” he says. He’s flirting, or not flirting but affectionate, his voice velveteen as he ducks his head. He wants to find your hand and kiss it. He loves kissing the tips of your fingers, but it’s a sure fire way to get you to lean away from him. He knows you like it, evidenced by your smile, and by your willingness to give him your hand again the next time. “Do you think we can just–” he shouldn’t ask here, should he? He does it anyhow. “I want it to be a date. Like, a proper, actual date we own up to.”
“Like we tell everyone we went?”
“Not right now, not if you don’t want to. Just between us then. It’s a real date.”
Something moves in your neck. You bite your lip but let it fall back into place as you say, “Yeah, okay. A real date.”
“Okay?” he asks.
“Yeah, okay,” you repeat. “I’d really like to.”
“You would?” he asks softly.
You turn in your seat to check the door, before leaning into his lap, and pressing a quick, careful kiss to lips, just a little to the side and up, your mouth aligned to the corner of his and the skin beneath his nose.
“So, somewhere nice, then,” you say as you sit in your seat properly.
James hooks his ankle behind the leg of your chair and drags you as close as he can possibly get you without yanking you into his lap. “I genuinely don’t care where we go, I just wanna go with you.” He gestures for you to come back, his hand rising to your shoulder. “I could kiss you stupid right here, I hope you know.”
“That’s not funny,” you say, laughing despite yourself.
He wasn’t making a joke, but he supposes he’s coming on strong. “I could, but I won’t. I’m too nice and you probably taste like kale anyways, which would be a punishment for me I don’t deserve.”
“Not the most flavourful vegetable, is it?”
He laughs softly against your lips. One second he’s not going to kiss you here, and the next it’s as though his body decided all on its own. He smiles too much to kiss you properly, but a kiss is a kiss. Kissing you is like electric and fireworks, and honey and sugar, and all manner of cliche things. It’s like a long day ending. It’s like your heart and his are the same, for just those few seconds together.
“You don’t taste so bad,” he murmurs.
“You could’ve let me have a drink first.”
“Where’s the fun in that? Come on, kiss me again.”
“No, no, ‘cos I don’t like that spicy sauce you put on your wraps and–”
He laughs again, you’re laughing just as loudly, tipping your head to the side as he wades in from the other.
The kitchen door opens with a whack. You spring apart from one another guiltily, too little too late as the man in the door makes his shock known.
“Where you just–” Sirius grins like a Cheshire Cat. “You were kissing! I knew it! I can’t–”
“Well you didn’t know it, did you?” Remus asks, giving Sirius a dirty look. “I’ve only tried to tell you ten times that I think there’s something going on with them, they’ve been holding hands. But no, Sirius Black knows everything about James Potter, like I didn’t grow up with you both too.” Remus gives his boyfriend a good glower and makes his way to the fridge.
You immediately fluster, bringing a hand to your eyes as though that might undo what’s been done.
“We weren’t kissing,” James says.
“No, then what were you doing, James?” Sirius asks.
“She was checking my teeth for sesame seeds?”
“With her tongue,” Sirius says smugly.
“Sirius, don’t.” Remus pulls his vitamin water from the fridge and remembers himself. “Sorry, Y/N. I’m not trying to embarrass you, and neither is Sirius.”
“Well, she has nothing to be embarrassed about,” James says, laying his hand on your arm.
“We really weren’t kissing,” you insist. Then, sighing in defeat. “If anything, James was kissing me and I was letting him.”
“Yes, because you so often just let me do things to you,” he says, stroking the crook of your elbow with his thumb.
“I knew it,” Sirius says happily, smirking like a fiend as Remus forces the vitamin water into his arms.
“You did not.”
“I was just trying to throw you off of the scent, Moony.”
James meets your eyes, still wide with surprise. “I’m sorry. Uh… They won’t tell?”
You tip your head. “Someone would’ve found out eventually, right?”
Right? As in, we would’ve kept going, we’re going to keep dating, and eventually more than that? James will have to buy you a very big bouquet of flowers tonight, lest you not believe him.
“I’m afraid so. At least that’s out of the way,” he says.
You bring his hand to your chin. You don’t kiss it, but the action alone has butterflies like hornets bouncing around his stomach. Massive bouquet, he thinks.

I had no idea how my life was about to change when I asked that girl out on a simple date. Her name was Isabella. I had seen her around town, her dark hair cascading like a waterfall down her back, and her eyes—her eyes were a perfect shade of deep brown, mysterious yet warm, like a rich cup of coffee. She seemed different from the usual crowd, more reserved, but her smile could light up a room.
When she said yes to my invitation to dinner, I thought I was the luckiest guy in the world. We chose a quiet, cozy Italian restaurant on the edge of town, away from the hustle and bustle. It was the kind of place that felt like a hidden gem, with candlelight flickering on every table and a soft hum of Italian opera in the background. We talked for hours. She was charming, funny, and intelligent, and I was captivated by every word she said. She seemed so ordinary, in the best way possible, and I couldn’t stop myself from thinking that I might have just met someone truly special.
As the evening came to an end, I walked her to her car, a sleek black Audi. She thanked me for the night, her eyes sparkling, and I felt like the world was at my feet. I promised to call her again, to arrange another date soon, and she smiled, nodding in agreement.
But that’s when things took a strange turn.
The next morning, I was at work when I got a phone call from an unknown number. I almost didn’t pick up, but something told me to answer.
“Is this Brian Holden?” a low, gravelly voice asked.
“Yeah, who is this?”
“My name is Vito. Vito Romano. We need to talk.”
I froze. The name hit me like a punch to the gut. Romano. That was the name of one of the most dangerous mafia families in the city. I had heard whispers about them. Stories of violence, power, and influence. And Vito Romano? He was the patriarch—the boss.
“I… I don’t understand,” I stammered. “What do you want from me?”
“I think you know,” Vito said, his voice calm but chilling. “You took my daughter out last night.”
I felt my blood run cold. My stomach dropped. Isabella was his daughter? The girl I had taken on a date?
“I didn’t know,” I said quickly, trying to explain myself. “I swear, I didn’t know. I thought she was just a normal—”
“I don’t care what you thought,” Vito interrupted. “What matters now is how you handle this situation. My daughter was not just any girl, and you will treat her with respect, or there will be consequences. Do you understand?”
“Yes… yes, I understand,” I stammered.
There was a long silence on the other end of the line before Vito spoke again.
“I’ll be at your place in an hour. Be ready to speak to me.”
I hung up the phone, my heart racing. I couldn’t believe it. I had just accidentally asked the mafia boss’s daughter on a date. What had I gotten myself into?
An hour later, a black SUV pulled up outside my apartment. My doorbell rang, and I opened it to find two imposing men in dark suits standing on my doorstep. One of them was holding a leather briefcase, the other had a scowl on his face. Behind them, I saw Vito himself, a tall man with salt-and-pepper hair and a presence that made everything around him feel small.
“Brian Holden?” he asked, his voice calm but intimidating.
“Y-yes,” I replied.
“Come with me,” he said, and without waiting for an answer, he turned and started walking toward the car. The two men followed, and I had no choice but to follow as well.
We drove for what felt like forever, the tension in the car suffocating. When we arrived at a large, gated mansion, I felt like I had entered another world. Vito led me inside, his presence commanding every inch of the grand house. We sat down in a lavishly decorated room, and Vito motioned for me to take a seat.
“I don’t know what you were thinking, taking my daughter out without knowing who she is,” Vito said, his tone softening just slightly. “But I can see that you’re not the type of man who would intentionally disrespect the Romano family.”
I swallowed hard, still in disbelief.
“I… I had no idea. I swear. I didn’t mean any harm.”
Vito studied me for a long moment before nodding. “I believe you. Isabella speaks highly of you. And in this family, that counts for something.”
I felt a weight lift from my shoulders.
“So, what happens now?” I asked cautiously.
Vito smiled—a rare, approving smile. “You’ll be a part of the family, Brian. You have my blessing. But remember this: we look out for our own, and you’ll do the same. Understood?”
I nodded, my mouth dry. “Understood.”
And just like that, I found myself welcomed into the heart of the mafia—a place I never imagined I’d be, all because of a simple date with a beautiful girl.

AN: Sorry this one took a while! - longer than I'd like away!. Coming back from a mini vaca and getting back into work and routine is a nightmare, also my delicate sleep schedule is ruineddd. Anywho, we should be back in business now! :) now, DJ play Good Luck, Babe by Chappell Roan!
Transcript under the cut
Geoffrey: Great job, bud! Tree is looking great!
Malcolm: It’s because I’m a decorator like mommy.
Jonathan: Mom, are you leaving? We’re supposed to decorate the tree too.
Nancy: Save a few ornaments for me to put on there, darling. Mommy has to step out for a couple hours.
Geoffrey: Johnny’s right, you know. Decorating it is apart of the deal.
Nancy: Can’t you spare me an hour or two?
Geoffrey: Remember what I said about being there?
Nancy: That’s not fair. I’ve been doing better, haven’t I? I left work early, which I’m hardly ever able to do and we found the tree together. I haven’t seen Vanessa in 16 years, Geoffrey. This is important to me.
Geoffrey: Yeah, well, this is pretty important to them.
Nancy: Please don’t make me feel guilty about this.
Geoffrey: It’s just you and Vanessa, right?
Nancy: [frowns] Yes, of course. I’ll be back, ok?
-
Vanessa: I’m glad you came.
Nancy: I wouldn’t have miss this for the world.
Vanessa: You look so beautiful tonight.
Nancy: [blushes] So do you. You’ve always have.
Vanessa: [smiles] I wasn’t sure on your choice of champagne, so I hope you don’t mind we have mine. I guess it’s one of the many things we’ll have to learn about each other.
Nancy: This is perfect. I’m sure I’ll love anything you like.
Nancy Narrates: [I found myself unable to eat. Instead, I got my fill of her. I studied her, consumed the sight of her with greedy, curious eyes]
Nancy Narrates: [It thrilled and frightened me the way she took me in too, as if she was trying to recall all those precious details that may have gotten lost in time. Seeing all the ways I could have changed and stayed the same]
Nancy Narrates: [One thing was for certain: my heart still raced the moment our fingers found one another, just like when we were girls. It was a delicate and familiar touch that I could feel from inside, and it was almost as if no time had passed at all]
Vanessa: [softly] Nancy, Nancy, Nancy, the woman you’ve become. I’ve thought of you, over time, what kind of woman you grew up to be.
Nancy: Is it what you expected?
Vanessa: Successful? Powerful? Stunning? Yes, I like to think so.
Nancy: I’ve thought of you too.
Vanessa: Yeah?
Nancy: I thought about what you did, after high school. Who you became. If you fell in love. If you thought about me too. Feels good, knowing you did.
Vanessa: I think holding on to the version of you I remembered kept me sane, after all this time. Do you mind if I smoke? Helps my nerves.
Nancy: As long as I can bum one.
Vanessa: Hey, do you remember our first cigarette together?
Nancy: How could I forget?
Vanessa: Share a light with me. For old times’ sake?
Vanessa: So, care to share all those burning questions you said you had for me?
Nancy: Now I feel like I’m being put on the spot.
Vanessa: Oh, come on. Don’t go shy on me now. How’s this? I’ll ask a question, then you, and so on.
Nancy: Alright. Shoot.
Vanessa: Do you still talk in your sleep?
Nancy: I- what!? I did not talk in my sleep!
Vanessa: Oh, yes you did. Full sentences too. You monologued even.
Nancy: Fuck off, I did NOT talk in my sleep! How would you know anyway? You were practically narcoleptic. I’d be up for hours after you fell asleep.
Vanessa: [murmurs] Still talks in her sleep- in denial about it. Ok. Got it. Your turn.
Nancy: I’ll ask a REAL question this time.
Vanessa: [smirks] That was a real question. I came all this way just to know but ok, ask away.
Nancy: Well, speaking of ‘all this way’. Where do you live?
Vanessa: Here and there. I don’t like to sit in one spot for too long; I get restless. Bored. I’ve spent the last 6 months in Tomorang. Beautiful people. Lovely culture. That’s actually where I heard your name mentioned for the first time. You’ve got quite the reputation over there. You’ve been up to no good, I hear.
Nancy: Christ...long story. Please don’t ask. Are you thinking of moving here?
Vanessa: Ah, ah. It’s my turn. Let’s see...ah! Who’s idea was it to make Geoffrey ‘Mr. Landgraab’. That’s probably the funniest shit I’ve ever heard.
Nancy: My parents, of course. They didn’t want to erase the family name and since they no longer have a son to continue their legacy- well. You get it. Speaking of marriage, are you married?
Vanessa: No, I’m not married.
Nancy: Well. Are you...seeing anyone?
Vanessa: [smirks] No.
Nancy: Children?
Vanessa: No children either. Those counts as a question, by the way.
Nancy: Oops. Ok, ok, you can ask two then. It’s only fair.
Vanessa: I guess I’ll ask a ‘real question then. Are you happy like this?
Nancy: [pauses] Like...what?
Vanessa: Married. Married to him. Does it make you happy?
Nancy: [shifts] I care for him very much. He’s the father of my children. He’s a good man and he’s good to me. Why are you asking me this-
Vanessa: Do you still like women?
Nancy: Do you?!
Vanessa: You have to answer my question first-
Nancy: Did you get my voicemail? November 2nd, 1993. I called you and I left you a voicemail. Did you hear it?
Vanessa: Nancy-
Nancy: Why didn’t you call me back? What—what happened to you, Vanessa? Where did you go? Where have you been!? Why, after all this time, am I just now seeing you?
Vanessa: It’s not really the easiest thing to talk about, but I know I owe you closure. [exhales] After I was pulled out of school, my father had me admitted. I received treatments to ‘fix’ me. Every time I fucked up and pissed off my father, he’d pack me up and ship me off until I came back normal and obedient.
Vanessa: There were days I thought I couldn’t keep going on like that, but then I heard your voicemail, and it... scared me. It made me angry. It broke my heart, but most importantly, it woke me up. I finally found the strength to escape my father and live my own truth. It cost me everything—my family disowned me. I relinquished my fortune, but in return, I’m free. I’m free, and I can live the life I deserve. I just... I wish I could have called, but life didn’t work out that way.
Nancy: It should have because I did call you, Vanessa.
Vanessa: I know.
Nancy: [weakly] I said that I loved you..
Vanessa: I know, I know...things were different for me back then.
Nancy: Things are different now! I’m married. I’m a mother!
Vanessa: I know, Nancy. I didn’t come here to break up a happy home.
Nancy: Why did you come here?
Vanessa: Can’t a girl miss her best friend?
Vanessa: Listen. I’ve thought a lot about how I would fit into your life if I ever got to see you again, if this was something you would want at all. That time we shared in our youth was the happiest I’ve ever been. I missed that feeling. I’ve missed you. I’m in a place to explore a friendship with you again, if you want it. If not, then I’ll accept that.
Nancy: I do want this. I want you here. I just...I can’t...
Vanessa: I know. It could be simple. Easy. I miss you, Nancy.
Nancy: [sighs] I miss you too. I’ve missed you so much.

All To Myself
requested by @schemmentisbaby
Summary: Your little girl is getting ready to go to Abbott- not that your wife's coworkers know.
WC: ~3.6k
Tumblr media
Melissa Schemmenti, second grade teacher at Abbott Elementary, your wife, and mother to your beautiful little girl: Grace Marie. Melissa Schemmenti, a woman who rarely talks about herself, so all that her coworkers know about her is that she’s married- and even then, she wishes they didn’t know that. It’s not that she has anything to hide or like she’s ashamed of you, but after growing up the way that she did, she’s learned that keeping her mouth shut about personal information is probably for the best. The fact that people know she’s a Schemmenti holds enough weight as it is.
Your wife has been able to keep it quiet that she has a little girl due to the fact that while she is present on Facebook, and so are you, there are very few people that she has on there. The only people that she’s so graciously allowed to friend her on that social media app are you, her family (yes, Kristen Marie included), and one Mrs. Barbara Howard. Those that are present on your social media aren’t aware of the weight that your last name now holds, having grown up just outside of Philly in the suburbs. So when you post images or updates on how your life is going, it doesn’t much matter, and Melissa doesn’t mind.
The second grade teacher has been relatively successful at keeping the personal and professional lives from mixing. That is going to change though, because Gracie is getting ready to head into kindergarten at none other than Willard R. Abbott Elementary School.
“Hun,” you sigh to your wife quietly as the two of you begin to grasp the fact that Grace is going to be attending your wife’s workplace.
“I just didn’t think it was going to be happening so soon,” Melissa mumbles. “I mean, it’s like she was born yesterday, and now she’s getting ready to enter kindergarten.”
“You’re telling me,” you chuckle. “I feel like we were hearing her heartbeat for the first time, and now we’re getting ready to send our baby to school.”
“Jesus, we’re gettin’ old.”
As it turns out, Grace is more than excited to be heading to school- she’s so excited to see the place where her mother works, and she can’t wait to be a big kid. And luck just so has it that your daughter is placed in her Aunt Barbie’s class.
“I get to be with Aunt Barbie all day?!” Grace squeals out with excitement when you tell her who her kindergarten teacher is.
You can’t help but chuckle at how precious she is. “You do, but at school she’s Mrs. Howard, yeah?”
Your little girl nods her head with enthusiasm. “When do I get to go?”
“School starts in two weeks, but Mommy goes in next week,” Melissa tells your little girl at the dinner table. “And on that Wednesday, they have a special night for kindergarteners to meet their teachers and get familiar with the school.”
“I can’t wait for school!”
“Oh, but I can,” your wife grumbles so that only you can hear her.
The day before Melissa goes back to Abbott for professional development days, she’s a bit more moody than usual. Because of this, your little girl spends most of the day with you. The redhead is stressed beyond belief trying to ensure that she has everything packed into her car to take to the school for the new year. She’s focusing on meal prepping so she can just grab things and go. Her outfit for whatever reason is stressing her out more than it usually would.
“Honey,” you mumble as she stands in your closet staring at all of her shirts. You wrap your arms around her waist and set your chin on her shoulder before kissing her neck gently. She hums as she leans into your affections.
“What has you so worked up tonight?” you prod gently. “Usually you don’t care what you wear to work.”
“I just… these are the last few days where my coworkers will see me as just Melissa, not Grace’s mother,” she admits. “Reminds me I’m gettin’ older.”
“We are getting older,” you remind her. “But that just means that we’re one step closer to retirement, to having a beautiful daughter to take care of us, more years of love under our belt.”
Your wife sighs softly and cranes her neck to look at you. “How do you always know what to say to help calm me down?”
“We’ve been married for years,” you chuckle. “Practice.”
The next morning, Grace cannot for the life of her understand why she doesn’t get to go with Melissa to her new school. She’s gotten herself dressed and ready, adorned with the backpack that is just about the size of her, and her new sparkly shoes.
“Mi amore,” your wife sighs as she kneels down to pull your daughter into a hug. “Mommy has to go do boring things at the school. Trust me when I tell you, you would rather stay with Momma and play at home for these last few days.”
“But I want you!” your little girl pouts. “I want Aunt Barbie!”
“And you’ll get me tonight,” Melissa tries to placate. “And I will talk to Aunt Barbie and see if she can come over today after work to play for a little bit, how does that sound?”
That seems to satisfy your daughter who comes bouncing over to you. She curls into your arms as your wife makes her way out the door.
At work, the redhead is happy to see her work wife, but she isn’t necessarily thrilled to be back at work for the school year.
“I saw Gracie’s name on my list for this year,” Barbara whispers to her friend when she’s certain no one else can hear.
“She’s real excited to have you as her kindergarten teacher,” Melissa chuckles softly. “She’s asking for you already. I told her I would see if you could come over after work today.”
“She’ll be sick of me by the end of this year,” the kindergarten teacher laughs.
Green eyes are rolled. “I doubt that. I’m fairly certain my kid loves you more than she loves me or Y/N.”
“You know your little girl has the most love for her mothers,” Barb smirks. “And then of course for Aunt Barbie. I’ll be there.”
“And I’m going to need every hand on deck for kindergarten orientation on Wednesday,” Ava announces. “This is the biggest class to come through Abbott since the 90s.”
“No can do,” Melissa states in front of everyone. “Have business I need to take care of, and it ain’t like you’re payin’ me.” She shoots her boss a look that dares her to challenge.
The principal quirks her lips to the side before rolling her eyes and sighing loudly. “Every hand on deck except for Red Hot.”
After the workday is done, the kindergarten and second grade teachers make their way back to your house. You and your little girl are sitting in the living room reading a book when you hear the front door open and close. All thoughts of the game are abandoned when Gracie jumps to her feet and goes to the door as fast as her little legs will take her. She launches herself at Melissa, who catches her with ease. Then she’s throwing herself at Barbara, who has just barely kneeled down to embrace her.
“How’s my baby girl?” Barbara asks as she kisses your daughter’s head.
Your little girl soaks up the attention. “Good! I want to go to school though.”
“Well, that comes next week, but I’m sure Mommy’s told you about how you’ll get to come see my classroom in a few days.” When Grace nods with excitement, Barbara continues. “And I know at home I’m Aunt Barbie, but at school I have to be Mrs. Howard. Think you can remember that for me, baby?”
“Pinky swears,” your daughter holds out her pinky with a grin.
“That’s my girl,” the kindergarten teacher smiles as she links pinkies with your little girl. “Now, what are we going to do today?”
Come Wednesday, after a long day of professional development in the morning and prepping for open house on Thursday, Melissa comes home to you and your excitable daughter.
“Mommy!” Grace goes running over to the front door, abandoning her station to help you prepare dinner.
“Mi amore,” your wife sighs happily as she lifts your daughter to her hip. “My beautiful girl.”
Grace giggles incessantly as the teacher pecks her cheeks continuously. Then your wife is making her way over to you.
“My gorgeous wife,” she whispers as she kisses you softly. “You’re the best.”
“I’m making your favorite,” you tell her quietly as you lean in to kiss her again.
Grace makes a face at your affections. “Ew, moms. Stop kissin’!”
The two of you roll your eyes in a playful manner. “You know I just love your momma so much,” Melissa laughs that low laugh that you find irresistible. She kisses you again.
“Are you ready to go see Aunt Barbie and your new school?” the redhead asks gently as she sets your daughter back down on the chair you have pulled up to the counter.
“Mrs. Howard,” Grace corrects with a toothy smile as she picks up the spoon to begin mixing the salad again.
Melissa rolls her eyes and pokes your daughter in the belly. “You’re lucky you’re cute.”
After dinner, your family makes their way down to Abbott. Grace clings to your hand the entire time. At the thought of going to a new school, she was excited. But now that the time is upon her, she’s nervous.
“It’ll all be okay, Gracie girl,” Melissa promises. “You know Mommy wouldn’t work here or let you go here if it wasn’t a good place to be.”
That seems to settle your daughter’s nerves just slightly, but she still remains close to you.
You and Grace walk in and head right to the little check in, knowing immediately where to go. Barbara just smiles and checks off your daughter’s name before greeting your wife who is trailing a few paces behind.
“Melissa!” you hear the boisterous voice of the principal of the school. “You said you wasn’t coming!”
Your wife just rolls her eyes and shrugs. “What can I say?”
The incoming class of kindergarteners are ushered into the gym for a quick presentation of teachers that they might come across throughout the school year. Of course, Barbara is up on the stage with all of the kindergarten teachers, but so is your wife and the rest of her work crew, as well as some other staff members that she rarely mentions.
Once that’s over with, they begin to move the children down to the classrooms that they’ll be spending most of their time in for the year. Grace takes your hand gently and guides you towards the correct line.
Abbott is a special school, you can see that just by walking through the halls. It’s filled with artwork from students, there are several plaques with various award titles on them, the teachers who are helping to guide students around are warm. Aside from the odd lingering smell, you can understand why Melissa works here and has worked here for years.
Your wife lingers in the room under the guise of just helping out her work wife- it makes sense to the rest of the staff that she would go with Barbara. Grace finds her desk with ease, knowing all of the letters in her name. She squeals with happiness when she sees the few little goodies that Mrs. Howard left on the students desks.
“Momma,” your little girl tugs on your shirt. “Sit with me?”
You oblige her request with a smile, settling in her chair before pulling her on top of you. Grace brightens and gives your wife a thumbs up before beginning to color the princess page Barbara had placed there. You can’t help but press a soft kiss to your girl’s temple before looking up at your wife with a smile. She’s absolutely precious. Melissa tries to hide the fact that she was sneaking a picture of the two of you, but it’s no use. Her cheeks tint just slightly red before shrugging her shoulders with a bashful smile.
The rest of your daughter’s class settles in and is allowed to color for a few moments while Barbara and Melissa chat with parents- no doubt answering questions that will surely be answered within the next few minutes.
Your wife’s boss makes her way into the classroom, and she eyes the redhead warily before teasing her. “I shoulda known you’d find your way into Barb’s classroom.”
“Well, she is-”
“I don’ care,” Ava states. She turns to scan the room, and her eyes immediately land on you. She winks.
You have to fight to roll your eyes. It’s funny that she chose you to focus in on, but it will be even funnier when she realizes that she just hit on her shadiest teacher’s wife.
Before the principal can say anything too out of line, Barbara claps her hands together and begins her spiel about herself as a teacher, the classroom that the students will be in, and the school itself.
Grace seems more than content to sit in your lap and color quietly while Melissa nods along to the things that her work wife is saying. She knows it all already, but it’s nice hearing what will be expected of your little girl while she’s in Barb’s classroom.
“And now, while the parents are filling out the paperwork necessary for the beginning of the school year, I figured I might take the students on a walking tour of the areas in the school that they’ll be in,” the kindergarten teacher explains with a clap of her hands. “So, we’re going to practice lining up and walking in the hallways like big kindergarteners.”
She manages to line up the entire class quietly before walking them out the door with Melissa. You sigh and begin to quietly fill out the paperwork for your little girl. It’s a while before you hear footsteps come back into the room, just as you’re getting ready to write down Melissa’s name under the second guardian spot. When you look up, you expect to see Barbara, your wife, and the students in tow. Instead, it’s Ava again, and she’s looking directly at you- you can practically feel her eyes on you.
“Does anybody have any questions about Abbott?” the principal asks.
A few hands go up, but she blatantly ignores them. She points to you. “What about you, angel face?”
Your brow goes up. “I think I’m all good, but thank you.”
“Surely you can’t know everything there is to know about this school,” Ava frowns. “You have to have at least one question.”
“Not that I can think of,” you tell her. If you do think of a question, you doubt she’ll know the answer to it anyway.
“Is that little girl of yours your first one to go through Abbott?”
You nod. “But I know all about this school.”
“Oh?” Ava smirks. “You did your research?”
Instead of telling her that your wife is Melissa, you just nod. Sure, you had done your research and asked your wife about the building, but you know the ins and outs of this school- the things that go on behind the scenes.
You think that’s the end of the conversation and start to write “Mrs.”, but she makes her way further into the room, and she stands over you sitting at a student desk.
“Where’s the wife?” Ava asks you as she leans against the desk. She drapes a gentle hand over your wrist. “Because I know someone as fine as you has one.”
You look up to her with a smirk before beginning to write down Melissa’s name.
Almost comically, the principal gasps and her hands fly to her mouth. She stands straight up. “You ain’t telling me Melissa is your wife, are you?!”
With impeccable timing, Melissa walks back into the classroom with Barbara and the kindergarteners.
“I am,” is all your wife states as she folds her arms over her chest and stares down her boss. “Why? You got something to-”
“Bye, y’all,” Ava runs out of the classroom as quickly as she had come in.
Barbara just looks to you with the silent question of if the principal was flirting with you, and you nod subtly.
Your wife sees red for a split second before she makes her way over to you with your daughter and wraps her arm around the top of your shoulders.
“Idiot,” Melissa grumbles as she plants a kiss to the top of your head. “Flirting with my wife like that.”
You reach up a hand and lay yours gently over hers. “She didn’t know because you didn’t tell her.”
“‘Cause she has no business knowin’ about my personal life,” your wife mutters.
“She will now,” you remind her. “Grace is goin’ here now, and you know that Ava’s gonna open her mouth about it the first chance she gets.”
“Which will be once everyone is out of the school, and we somehow get corralled into helping break everything,” Melissa rolls her eyes.
It’s a bit of time before Ava makes the announcement that all families should head out of the building to allow the teachers to get home for the night. But when you think that Melissa is going to try to book it out of there as quickly as possible, she begins to help her work wife straighten up her classroom.
You know that the two of them are quite close, but it is something else to see them working together in silence. It’s like how you and Melissa work- in sync, with ease, naturally.
And then the rest of the group begins to come in, asking questions before they even fully enter the room to see you and your little girl sitting quietly on the carpet reading a book together. Okay, you’re reading, but Grace is touching each word as you read.
You pause your reading as the boisterous group comes in. Their eyes immediately go to you, and they halt their questioning.
“I’m sorry,” a shorter woman, who you can only assume is Janine, speaks quietly. “I didn’t realize you still had a student in the room.”
“They’re fine,” Melissa cuts in before anyone else can say anything. “They’re with me.”
Gregory furrows his brow. “Why would they-”
“Melissa Schemmenti, when the hell was you goin’ to tell us you have a daughter that was going to come to Abbott?!” the principal yells as she struts in. “And that your wife was fine as-” She cuts herself off at the challenging look green eyes give her.
“They’re with me because that’s my wife and my daughter,” the redhead points to the two of you. “Gracie, come say hi to Mommy’s friends.”
Your little girl jumps out of your lap and runs over to your wife, who lifts her onto her hip with ease. “I’m Gracie, and I’m five!” she holds out an entire hand for emphasis. Her smile is enough to melt their hearts.
“Oh, Mel Mel, she’s so cute,” Jacob grins as he high fives your daughter.
“Mi amore,” Melissa jerks her head for you to come over.
“Y/N,” you smile that charming smile of yours as you wrap an arm around the Melissa. “Mrs. Schemmenti, if you will.”
“How the hell didn’t we know about this now?” Mr. Johnson wrinkles his nose. “That’s a load of bull… trash.”
Emerald eyes are rolled. “Because the boss don’t look at the rosters to know who’s comin’ in.”
“I did!”
“Did you?” Janine narrows her eyes as she looks to the principal.
Ava looks offended. “So what if I did or did not? Overseeing an entire school is hard! It ain’t my fault Melissa never told us she had a daughter!”
“You didn’t tell them about me?” Grace frowns, and she looks a bit wounded by that knowledge.
“Mommy just wanted you all to herself,” your wife promises as she dots a few kisses along your daughter’s hairline.
That seems to placate your daughter, who snuggles right back up to the redhead before yawning. “Aunt Barbie is my teacher.”
“She is,” you chuckle as you smooth down a few of her wild locks. “But at school she’s Mrs. Howard, remember?”
“Mrs. Howard is my teacher,” your little girl yawns out.
“I think it’s about time we head home,” Melissa chuckles softly. She looks to you. “Are you about ready t’head out?”
You nod and grab your purse from where Grace will be sitting next Monday. “Well, it was really nice to finally meet you all,” you chuckle out. “I know she’s in good hands here at Abbott.”
The group seems to have more questions for the redhead that is quickly escorting you out, but she ignores them and ushers you out.
Just as you’re leaving, Ava shouts down the hallway, “Girl, don’t think we ain’t talkin’ ‘bout how youse are milfs tomorrow!”
There’s a loud chorus of “Ava!” that can be heard right after. You have to hide the smile. You’re already well aware that your wife is hot.
“Momma?” Grace looks to you with curious eyes.
“Yeah baby?” you ask.
“What’s a milf?”
“Ava is dead tomorrow,” your wife grumbles.
“You love your boss, and your coworkers,” you remind her.
Melissa sighs heavily. “They’re freakin’ lucky.”

dream team back. we’re currently yapping central again (per usual)
both of us are straight up in a tim drake brainrot spiral too!!! he’s a delightful little weirdo. a strange little gentleman if you will.
tim is such a funny little guy!!! he also makes a solid yandere. you can’t outsmart him. you can’t escape someone who can find everything about you. On the upside, I feel like he’d be happy to spoil his darling. also he’d be like, really considerate in weird ways??? I mean like you don’t get privacy (or you get the illusion of it maybe but not actual privacy.)
like yeah you’re always being watched in some way, but the man has committed every single one of your favorites and least favorites to memories. He knows what clothing you like, what specific features you look for in everything, and if he doesn’t, by god, will he learn. He knows your favorite song, and he knows the nickname you went by in elementary school.
Do you think he pretends to be normal and basically sets things up to send reader to be like a little love story?? You meet by chance, and he fell first. He fell a LONG time ago, so now it’s his mission to make you fall too. And Tim Drake ALWAYS finishes a mission. (Even as a baby daddy candidate). He makes himself the best option, even if he’s not the father.

Yandere!TimDrake x PastFriend!Reader x Aiden Cobblepot
☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️
A/N: Sooooo, I'm finally and slowly going through my ask box and you two may have sparked an idea just for Tim. I might have to do a Part Two for this. (I'm falling into the WIP trap. Help!) But, I love the thought of the Bat Family have competition when it comes to their darling. Gives them a challenge. Plus, I really wanted to use Aiden Cobblepot for this. I've been wanting to sneak him into something.
A/N: We have neglected!Sib!Reader, but what about a Neglected!Friend!Reader? Fun idea. Tim already knowing everything about you only to find you’ve changed and wants to study you all over again. Only this time he’s keeping you! (I’m very fond of Tim. I think he’s difficult to write for me, but I enjoy the little stalker so much.)
Warnings: Yandere Themes, Romantic themes, Tim can be read as kinda platonic, GN!Reader
☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️
You and Tim were once good friends. Well, he was your best friend. To him you were just a good one. High school buddies that would hang out all the time. At school only. And sometimes the rare gala you saw him at. It was rare you ever actually went to The Manor. You never asked to go. But, you had hoped to be invite.
Just like you had hoped that he might reciprocate that pesky crush you had on him back then. You had felt like it was so painfully obvious. Though it wasn't as painful when you finally figured out he was Red Robin and you waited and waited for him to tell you his secret identity. And, then you would tell him you already figured it out and you would look so cool.
Only, he never did. You both grew distant. You had put so much carful effort into keeping that distance from growing. Inviting him to hang out more. Asking him out for casual coffee. He always said the same thing.
"Oh, damn. I could really go for that right now. But, I'm just sorta busy. Next time though. For sure."
Over and over. He sounded like a broken character. Repeating the same phrase. One that you would hang around after the game was over to reminisce about all the fun adventures you both once had. However this was life not a game. You couldn't just restart and rerun the same adventures.
It made you ache when you finally moved on. When you finally pulled away. Because, Tim didn't even notice you were gone. His life to change. He didn't have to restart anything. You had lost your best friend and he didn't even care. It stung. It stung more than you realizing he'd never reciprocate your feelings.
But, like all things, time moves on and so do you. Leaving the past behind and starting a new game. One that you start to flourish in. Making new friends. Meeting new people. Building closer bonds and more healthy friendships. It had been interesting to realize how dependent you had been on Tim once upon a time. And, embarrassing. You can't help looking back on it with a wince. You almost want to reach out and apologize. But, that would be weird and you both live completely separate lives now. You hardly ever see him at galas now. Mostly because you don't go anymore.
Things, do change. You never expected your new partner would draw Tim's attention back to you. And, in such a terrible way.
You had a rough idea of what you were getting into when Aiden Cobblepot had asked you out to dinner. You figured he was only interested in you for your money or your half-decent looks or your family name and position. You had heard all the rumors about him, but still you went. Mostly, because you knew how dangerous he and his family were. And, you were… presently surprised.
He was a bit of an entitled asshole. But, he wasn't scared of getting dirty. You watched him lead you through the puddles of rain water and Gotham grim in the posh restaurant. He held more concern for you're clothing getting dirty than his, which were more expensive than yours. He paid for the date without flinching at the price. Encouraged you to try his own food from his plate. Talked about fond memories of the things he and his sister got up to as children while asking you about your own childhood.
Admittedly, you were easily seduced because after that the two of you became an item. You didn't even realize how official you were until he introduced you to his sister, Addison, and she was actually nice to you. Extremely nice. She did, however, threaten to kill you if you betrayed Aiden in any way, which was honestly fair enough.
Aiden and you were a bit on the opposite side of things, taste wise and morally wise. But, you both made it work. He continued his life of crime, but made no mention of it around you to keep you legally clean. You shared most of your life with him, letting him have a slight glimmer into normalcy. He liked to take you on fancy dates and show you a good time. You were happy to pull him inside just to spend personal time with each other. Of course, you both made compromises. Aiden had a taste for luxury, and you didn't mind indulging in it. Especially after you beat his ass multiple times in Mario cart. It was only fair you let him take you to a gala some point.
Little did you know that that was how Tim would come clawing and digging his way back into your life.
☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️☁️
For Tim seeing you again was like finding an old precious treasure. His life had gotten so difficult and complicate lately that just a reminded of all those old times was nice.
However, seeing you on the arms of the Penguin's son was a brutal wake up call. What were you doing? Had you hit your head? Was he blackmailing you? Drugging you? Everyone in Gotham could recognize the name Cobblepot and how dangerous they are. And, he remembers how smart you were so you couldn't have willing chose to be there. It's not logical.
For your safety, he reintroduces himself to you. Long time, no see. We should hang out some time and catch up. Only he means it. He can't let this happen. He can't let you fall in with a man like that. You're his friend. He'll win you over for your own sake. Ruin Cobblepot while he's at it because how dare he use you.
Even if you changed. Even if you don't smell the same. If your hair is different. If you dress different. Even if your very laugh had changed pitch, he knows you. And, if anything, he can just re-learn you all over again. It won't take long. He's done it all before. This time he'll savor though. This time he won't let you go as he pulls you back in. You were a good friend, this time he'll make you more.

A/N: I’m starting to type up Part Three of Pregant!Reader, but I ended up coming up with another start to it with more drama that would be strictly for the BatBoys. The messed up drama in it sounds fun and challenging, but I won’t do it until I finish what I started with the blurbs I have planned included.
A/N: Smalltown!Meta!Reader Part Nine is going to take a while. I have big plans for it, but Pregnant!Reader is kinda outshining it.
A/N: I will post about the LoungeSinger!Reader and another idea I came up with that y’all might like that I’ll add to the concept list.
A/N: There’s a Tony Part Two coming, but it’s only halfway typed and still not that yandere-y. Need to fix that.
A/N: My asks box is full, so I’m gonna try to empty it, but I host Thanksgiving in my family and I’m also a Christmas nut, so I’m gonna be busy. (I have four Christmas trees in my house currently… But I’m not as bad as my in-laws! They had their trees up BEFORE Halloween.)

Okay, First of all I love your work!! Second of all could you write arcane characters where the reader has Ears and a tail? (similair to Lest)
Thats it thank you for all the drabbels🩷
Tumblr media
AHHHH THANK YOU SO MUCH!! 😭💖 I LIVE FOR THESE KIND OF ASKS. You want Arcane characters reacting to an S/O with ears and a tail?? I got you babes!!
————————————————————————
Jinx
You’re sitting at her workbench, tail swishing back and forth while you read. Jinx is hanging upside down from the rafters (don’t ask), and her eyes zero in on your tail like it’s the most interesting thing in the world.
“Hey, hey, hey!” she says, dropping down so fast you almost jump. “Does it move when you’re happy? Ooooh, can I touch it? Pleaaaase?”
Before you can answer, she’s already running her fingers through it, cooing like she’s petting a cat.
“Aw, it’s so soft! You’re like my little fox!” She grabs her paint. “Stay still. I’m gonna make a matching tail for me—wait, does this mean we’re like a pack or something?”
Vi
The first time Vi notices your ears and tail, she just blinks and smirks. “Nice ears. They real?” She tugs lightly on one, and you swat her hand away with a huff.
“Okay, okay, chill,” she laughs, throwing her hands up. But you catch her watching your tail out of the corner of her eye, like she’s just waiting for it to wag.
Later, you’re lying in her lap, and she’s idly scratching behind your ears. You start purring (accidentally, okay??), and she grins down at you.
“Yeah, I’m never letting you live this down. My badass S/O’s a total softie.”
Sevika
Sevika pretends not to care. She just raises an eyebrow and goes, “Huh. That’s new.”
But then your tail brushes against her arm while you’re sitting together, and she flinches like it shocked her. “Damn thing’s alive?”
You roll your eyes, but when you try to move it away, she grabs it gently. “Relax. It’s… cute, I guess.” She won’t admit it, but she LOVES how soft it is. If you’re cuddling, she’ll run her fingers through your tail absentmindedly.
And if anyone says something about it? She’s cracking her knuckles, ready to throw hands.
Silco
Silco notices your ears and tail the second you walk into his office. He tilts his head, intrigued but not surprised. “Fascinating. Do they serve a purpose, or are they merely aesthetic?”
You sigh. “They’re part of me, Silco.”
He nods, like he just solved a puzzle, and his curiosity is OFF THE CHARTS. He’ll casually brush his hand against your tail when you’re sitting next to him, testing your reaction.
If he sees your ears twitch when you’re upset, his voice softens. “Your emotions betray you, my dear.” He uses your tail as a barometer for your mood and adjusts his approach accordingly.
Vander
Vander is SO GENTLE about it. When he first notices, he smiles and says, “Didn’t know I had a fox for a partner.”
He’s super respectful, though. He won’t touch your tail or ears unless you’re okay with it. But once you give him the green light? Oh, he’s ALL IN.
You’re curled up on the couch, and he’s got one hand buried in your tail while the other scratches behind your ears. “Y’know, these suit you,” he murmurs. “Beautiful, just like the rest of you.” (Cue blushing.)
Ekko
Ekko spots your tail swishing behind you, and his jaw DROPS. “Yo! How did I not notice this before?!”
He’s so hyped. He’ll jokingly mimic your tail with his scarf, wagging it like he’s part of your crew. “We’re matchin’ now, babe!”
If you’re sparring and your tail flicks, he’ll tease you about it. “What’s wrong, tail got nervous?” But if someone else makes a comment, he’s immediately defensive. “Back off. That tail’s cooler than you’ll ever be.”
Jayce
Jayce is trying SO HARD to be cool about it. He notices your ears twitch and goes, “Huh, that’s… interesting.” But he’s dying inside because he thinks you’re adorable.
The first time your tail brushes against him, he freezes. “Uh… do you, like, feel that? Is it… alive?” You laugh at his awkwardness, but he’s genuinely fascinated.
Later, he’s holding you in his arms, and your tail wraps around his waist. He melts. “Okay, that’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen.”
Viktor
Viktor is surprisingly composed when he notices your ears and tail. He leans forward, studying you like you’re a fascinating experiment. “Are these natural, or… enhanced?”
When he realizes they’re real, he’s super curious about how they work. “Do your ears have heightened sensitivity? Does your tail serve a practical function?”
If you’re working together and your tail accidentally brushes his hand, he’ll go quiet for a moment before saying, “It’s… quite soft.” And if you catch him smiling to himself later, you KNOW he secretly loves it.
Caitlyn
Caitlyn notices your ears twitch when she calls your name, and her first thought is, adorable.
She’s super polite about it, though. “I hope you don’t mind me asking, but… your ears and tail—are they natural?” When you nod, she smiles. “They’re lovely.”
She’s the type to gently stroke your tail when you’re cuddling, finding it soothing. And if anyone makes you feel self-conscious about them? She’ll shut them down with a cold, “I think they’re perfect. Don’t you?”
Mel Medarda
Mel’s first reaction is pure fascination. She runs her fingers along your ears and murmurs, “Exquisite. You’re truly one of a kind.”
She treats your tail like a luxury, stroking it gently when you’re lounging together. “I could get used to this,” she says with a sly smile.
Mel makes you feel like your ears and tail are the most beautiful things in the world. If anyone dares to insult them, she’ll give them a look so icy they’ll regret their existence.
Ambessa Medarda
Ambessa’s reaction is blunt but genuine. “That’s… different.”
She’s not the type to gush, but you’ll catch her glancing at your tail when she thinks you’re not looking. If it brushes against her, she’ll chuckle. “Careful, love. You’ll start a fight with that thing.”
Over time, she grows fond of it. When you’re resting your head on her shoulder, she’ll absentmindedly run her hand through your tail, a rare moment of softness from her.
Heimerdinger
Heimerdinger is FASCINATED. “My word! These ears and tail—how did they come to be?”
He’s asking a million questions, taking notes, and theorizing about the evolutionary advantages they provide. But he’s also super respectful and genuinely finds them beautiful.
If your ears twitch while he’s talking, he’ll pause and go, “Did I say something alarming?” When you explain it’s just a reflex, he chuckles. “Fascinating!”
Salo
Salo notices your tail and raises an eyebrow. “Interesting. I assume it’s functional?”
He doesn’t say much, but you can tell he’s intrigued. If your tail brushes against him, he’ll glance at it and go, “Careful where you’re aiming that.”
Over time, he becomes protective of it. If anyone tries to touch it without your permission, he’ll step in with a quiet but firm, “Don’t.”
Scar
Scar’s first reaction is to smirk and say, “That’s new. You hiding more surprises, or is this it?”
She’s lowkey obsessed, though. If your tail’s swishing, she’ll try to grab it just to tease you. “Gotcha!”
But if someone else tries to mess with it, her playful side vanishes. “Touch them again, and you’ll regret it.”
Maddie Nolen
Maddie notices your tail wagging when you’re happy and GASPS. “Oh my gosh, that’s the CUTEST thing ever!”
She’ll gently ask if she can touch it, and when you let her, she’s all giggles and coos. “It’s so soft! You’re like a real-life plushie!”
She makes sure you never feel self-conscious about it and loves showing you off to her friends. “Isn’t S/O the most adorable thing ever? Look at their tail!”
Lest
Lest notices your ears and tail and immediately feels a sense of kinship. “So, we’re not so different after all,” she says with a smile.
She’s super gentle with your tail and ear like they are her own, since she has them she knows all the best spots to scratch and pet!
intertwines your tails together <3 like vines.

“You’re awfully cheerful.” The villain leaned back on the hero’s couch and cocked their head. There was only a hint of a smirk but the hero didn’t need more than that to determine their nemesis’ mood.
It was all about the subtle movements.
A twitching eyebrow. A look at their own shoes. A breath taken in a little too quickly.
The hero knew the villain - knew every little detail about their behaviour, knew what they were feeling. Feelings were one thing, facts on the other hand…the hero didn’t know what their nemesis was planning, nor what their next move was. They could tell when the villain was angry, disappointed, amused. But why…?
Nevertheless, the hero smiled and lounged in their armchair, making themselves as comfortable as possible in their own home.
“I’m trying this new thing…having a positive mindset and all. You know, not taking everything so serious.”
“Someone blew up your car today,” the villain pointed out. They stared at the bottle of wine the hero had opened an hour ago. Half finished. “You must be quite upset.”
“I’m kind of grateful, actually.”
“Grateful?” The villain raised a brow and the hero tilted their head. It must have looked rather confident. Cocky, almost. Whether it was the little bit of alcohol or the situation in general - the hero did feel a bit cocky.
“Yeah, I mean. I’m glad I wasn’t in the car when it exploded. That’s a reason to celebrate.”
“Someone knows you’re involved with me,” the villain said.
“We don’t know that for sure,” the hero answered.
“Evidence suggests it, though.”
The hero whistled, impressed. Their eyes widened and something inside them wanted this to be their fault.
“What else is the evidence suggesting, Detective?” The hero let their eyebrows wiggle and took a sip of the wine. They liked to think that not only the villain was changing the hero but that the hero was also influencing their nemesis.
Detective. The villain was definitely smart enough to be one and, Lord, the hero would have loved to see that brilliant mind work on cases with them.
The hero smiled to themselves. Fantasising about the villain being their partner wasn’t new. But it was entertaining. Over and over again.
“That you’re not careful enough.”
“Hm?”
“You got into a fight again. Your knuckles are bruised. Someone blew up your car today. And all you do is sit here and drink,” the villain said. A twitching eyebrow. “You’ll get yourself killed.”
“Aww, are you worried about me?” The hero’s eyes narrowed. “Scared your favourite hero will end up dead?”
The villain’s face didn’t change and at first, they didn’t say anything.
So, the hero observed them carefully.
Their relationship was at a point that suggested they were either hooking up or just really good friends. For the neighbours, it was normal to let the villain in. And for the hero, it was normal to visit the villain in their lair.
Quite risky. Quite rewarding, too.
Exchanging information was crucial to the both of them.
Additionally, the hero kind of liked them.
“I would get you a bodyguard but as of right now, I can’t guarantee that whoever wanted to kill you today isn’t one of my men.” A look at the ground and the hero had to frown. “I’ll take care of that, obviously.”
“You want to hire a bodyguard? For me?” the hero asked. They chuckled into their wineglass.
“No, I won’t hire anyone. I’ll be your bodyguard.”
“Huh?!” The hero’s grip around the glass tightened.
“You’re irreplaceable as informant and in case you die, all your secrets which means all my secrets are very likely to see the light of day. The files on your computer won’t stay hidden forever. I’d like to avoid that.”
“I think I can take care of myself.” The hero looked at the wine. Did that mean the villain wanted to move into this apartment?
The hero blushed softly.
More reasons for the neighbours to gossip about a possible relationship. Jeez.
“I don’t think so,” the villain said. “I haven’t threatened you in weeks, so don’t make me do it. I won’t debate this. I need you alive and I don’t trust anyone enough to do this job right now. I’ll take the couch.”
“I don’t get a say in this?” the hero asked. They laughed at the absurdity.
“No.” The villain’s voice was stern now.
“Hm.” Slowly, the hero finished the glass and set it down on the little table between them and the villain. “Maybe it’ll be fun to watch you follow me around like a dog.”
A blush.
“Call it whatever you want.”
And that’s how the both of them became roommates.

A Not-So-Disastrous Romance (Book 2) Chapter Twenty
Saiki Kusuo x Reader
Chapter Twenty: Investigative Transfer
Summary: Akechi begins to investigate Saiki's "psychic-ness."
“You’re (Y/N) (L/N), right?” said Akechi, appearing behind (Y/N) in the hall. It was between classes, and (Y/N) jumped. Akechi didn’t give (Y/N) a chance to respond and barreled right into his next question. “You’re in my class. You sat with me at lunch. I just wanted to make sure you knew who I was. I noticed you and Kusuo seemed to be close.”
(Y/N) coughed, and they opened their mouth to speak, but Akechi continued.
“I have a few questions about Kusuo. What is he like? Has anything strange ever happened around you while he’s there?” said Akechi.
“Not really,” said (Y/N). They smiled. “Everything is fine with him. Sometimes we’re around weird, but fun, people, so there’s that, but Kusuo doesn’t do anything weird.”
They don’t think of my abilities as weird. From the floor above where he was listening to the conversation, Saiki smiled slightly.
“Anything unexplained? Sudden things appearing or disappearing? Things moving how they shouldn’t?” Akechi leaned in. “You’re obviously the closest to him. Are you just friends? Or are you dating?”
(Y/N)’s face turned completely red. “I—”
“Judging by your reaction, you’re either dating or at least have a crush on him,” said Akechi. “Do you have a crush on him because he’s a psychic? Is he impressive? Do you have proof of his powers?”
(Y/N) crossed their arms. “I like Kusuo—” I love Kusuo “—because he’s a good guy. He’s nice and helpful. Anything else doesn’t matter. Who cares about stuff like psychic powers?”
Oh, wow. I love (Y/N). Those words sent him head-over-heels for them again.
“So you don’t see him doing anything weird?” said Akechi.
“Nope. Everything he does is just Kusuo,” said (Y/N), smiling.
Akechi deflated slightly. “Thank you for your time.”
Saiki breathed a sigh of relief. He could really rely on (Y/N).
l
“Line up!” said Matsusaki, the sun beating down on the class. They stood in gardens, reading for their jobs. “We’re digging up potatoes, today.”
Our school does this every October, thought Saiki. Yare yare. We’re not little kids. Nobody gets excited—
“Let’s dig up potatoes!” said Hairo.
            “Yeah!” cheered the other students.
            I’m proved wrong.
“We’re fart after eating sweet potatoes,” laughed Nendou.
            An idiot.
“You can’t hide from me,” declared Kaidou dramatically. “You can’t escape my Sweet Potato Radar.”
            What a useless radar.
“A golden treasure lies in wait!” said Mera.
            She’s insatiable.
“If I can get a few potatoes, I can make potato-based bread,” said (Y/N) thoughtfully. “That’s very good.”
“Let’s get to work, then,” said Saiki. A good pastry from (Y/N) was all the incentive he needed. He grimaced as soon as he stepped into the fields with (Y/N). His one weakness would be present, unfortunately. “Bugs…”
“What was that, Kusuo?” said (Y/N).
“Nothing,” said Saiki, pulling on his gloves. At least he was working with (Y/N). I’ll just pretend to dig.
“Hi, there, Kusuo, (L/N),” said Akechi, appearing beside them. “Can I join you? We harvested potatoes once. It was October third in second grade when I was on the bus with you and peed my pants. I caused so much trouble then.” He crouched beside (Y/N) and Saiki. “Potato harvesting is fun, isn’t it? It makes me smile.”
“I hope it doesn’t make you pee.”
(Y/N) nudged Saiki in the side for that comment.
“Kusuo, watch your feet,” said Akechi. “You might step on a worm.”
Sure enough, Saiki looked down and saw a bug. He jerked back immediately. “Crap!”
            “Are you okay?” said Akechi.
Saiki swallowed. I held it in. That was close. He had almost exploded all the potatoes up from the ground. If I did that in front of this guy, it’s all over.
“You don’t look well,” said Akechi.
“Don’t worry, Kusuo,” said (Y/N). They picked up the caterpillar and set it on a bush farther away so it could eat and grow. They smiled back at Saiki. “I’ll protect you from the bugs.”
“Are you an angel?” blurted out Saiki, and (Y/N) laughed.
“Hey, pal, pinky, look what I harvested!” called Nendou, holding up a dozen giant potatoes.
            “Great job, Nendou,” said (Y/N).
“Those are impressive potatoes,” said Akechi, thankfully distracted.
“Right? His are even better, though,” said Nendou, gesturing to Kaidou. “Show them.”
“Shut up,” huffed Kaidou. “Here.” He held up a few shriveled potatoes.
            “So tiny.”
“Impressive, little guy!” laughed Nendou. “The skinniest potatoes!”
“Shut up! It’s about how they taste! Not how they look,” said Kaidou defensively.
“Those will definitely taste bad,” said Saiki.
            “Yeah,” agreed (Y/N), chuckling.
“Did you know that the purple color of these potatoes is due to a pigment called anthocyanin?” said Akechi.
“What’s that all about?” said Nendou.
“My character talks a lot, so I need to talk now or you’ll forget,” said Akechi.
“I don’t think we can forget you,” chirped (Y/N). “You leave an impression.”
“That’s not a good thing.” I should leave while Akechi is busy. He took (Y/N)’s hand and pulled them away with him a few steps.
They paused as they looked at Mera, who stared up at them tiredly. She had been harvesting so quickly she was already tiring. Saiki blinked. (Y/N) blinked. Mera blinked. Saiki patted her on the shoulder, and a light burst for a moment. An energized Mera jumped up and walked off for more potatoes, leaving a few for Saiki to pick up without having to face any bugs.
“Go and prosper,” said Saiki as Mera happily went searching for more food.
            “Bye, Mera!” said (Y/N), waving.
“Did you already finish, Kusuo? When?” said Akechi, appearing behind them.
“When you were rambling about potato taste and color,” said Saiki.
“But your gloves are still clean,” observed Akechi. “Did someone help you? You can’t have someone else do it.”
“Kusuo and I were working together. He spotted the best plants, and I pulled them up,” said (Y/N), smiling and holding up their own dirty gloves.
“The whole point of this exercise is to serve the community, so he should pull at least one for it to be fair. Come on, Kusuo, let’s do this,” said Akechi. “Help me clear away these vines.” He tossed a vine to Saiki.
Instantly, Saiki’s eyes narrowed in on the worm about to crawl onto his hand. He sucked in a breath.
“Look at this one, it looks like a turd!” said Nendou, showing a strange potato to Kaidou.
            Bam! It exploded.
            “It blew up!” cried Kaidou.
“Oh, something happened,” said Akechi, looking back. He looked at Saiki with an evil look on his face. “Let’s continue.”
He figured out I hate bugs…
            He knows Kusuo’s weakness.
Kusuo hates bugs! though Akechi. Enough to unconsciously use his psychic powers. I’ll find some more.
Saiki shivered and braced himself as best he could as Akechi approached. “Here, Kusuo,” said Akechi.
“Oh, Akechi, watch out,” said (Y/N), interceding with a smile. “There are still some bugs on the vine.” They took the bugs in their gloves and deposited them back on the ground. “You don’t want to disturb them from their habitat.”
“Oh. Right. They are good pollinators,” said Akechi, his plan interrupted once again by (Y/N).
Saiki stared at (Y/N) like they were a real angel in the flesh. Not only had them somehow been nice to the gross bugs, but they had saved him from Akechi.
“It’s no problem, just be careful. Leave them on the ground,” said (Y/N), smiling. “Kusuo, will you help me pull on these?”
Saiki nodded and knelt to help them. He knew no bugs were around if (Y/N) was asking him. So, he pulled out a potato, and (Y/N) grinned.
“There, Akechi. Now Kusuo has helped on both sides of our team-up,” said (Y/N). They gestured to their basket. “We have to head out, now. Bye.”
Akechi watched them go. They are definitely dating. But are they covering for Kusuo because of that or do they truly not know about his powers?
You will never find out, thought Saiki. It was bad enough that Akechi was figuring out they were dating and could blab to everyone, but he did not intend for Akechi to learn that his abilities were real.
l
“Thank you for dealing with the bugs.” Saiki shivered as he remembered them.
“It’s no problem,” said (Y/N), smiling and putting down a freshly baked loaf of potato bread. It had taken until the weekend to finish it up, but they had the loaf now. “Everyone has their fears.”
“You don’t,” remarked Saiki. They faced everything easily.
“I get scared of haunted houses and ghosts,” said (Y/N).
“That’s only because Toritsuka is a creep and makes everything creepier,” said Saiki.
(Y/N) laughed. “Fair enough. But I am scared of things.”
“I don’t believe that.” (Y/N) was one of the strongest and bravest people he knew—maybe the strongest and bravest.
“I’m scared of losing you,” teased (Y/N).
The sudden flirting made Saiki’s cheeks warm, and (Y/N) laughed. “I bring a lot of trouble. Your life would be calmer without me.”
“My life would be boring without you,” corrected (Y/N). “And I like my life with you in it.”
“Even when you have to deal with people like Akechi or Teruhashi or Kusuke?” said Saiki incredulously.
“Yeah,” said (Y/N), shrugging as if it was obvious. “Kokomi is my friend, and she is growing, maturing. She is so used to her identity being her looks that she’s still figuring out who she is beyond that. I think she’s going to find who she is and be happier for it. So she’s no bother.
“Kusuke is…eccentric, but I know you and I can handle his ridiculous games.” They laughed.
“And as for Akechi…I think he’s just looking for answers. Whatever happened between you two, he’s clearly been left with questions, and I can’t blame him for wanting to understand,” said (Y/N). “If you had just teleported away when I found you teleporting the hotel, I would be confused and try to get answers.” They shrugged. “So I don’t care about all that. I like having you in my life, Kusuo. You’re my boyfriend now, and you were my friend before. Nothing changes that I care about you.”
            “You’re too nice.”
“And you’re too pessimistic, so we balance each other out,” laughed (Y/N).
“…Should I tell Akechi?” said Saiki. “Would that get him to leave us alone?”
(Y/N) looked at him. “Do you want my honest answer?” Saiki nodded. “Probably not. I think he wants to be your friend like you were in elementary school. And he seems like the type that becomes part of our friend group.” They laughed.
“I don’t know if he wants to be my friend about elementary school,” said Saiki.
(Y/N) paused. “Do you want to talk about it?”
            “I…did something I shouldn’t have,” said Saiki.
(Y/N) sat down across from Saiki and held out their hand. Saiki took their offer and held their hand. “You can tell me if you want.”
“I healed him after he was bullied. He was nice to me, and I wanted to help. I thought he was unconscious, but he had seen everything. He started calling me a psychic, a healer, the next few days, and the bullies started demanding I prove it.” Saiki paused. “I didn’t. I acted clueless. I thought that would stop everything, but—”
(Y/N) squeezed his hand encouragingly, gazing at him.
“I found Akechi beaten up again. I saw them standing over him, and I just snapped.” Saiki swallowed. “I destroyed the entire classroom and barely managed to wipe the memories of the bullies of what I’d done. But Akechi saw. And I had to leave schools. All because I lost control and hurt people.” He looked at (Y/N). “That’s why Akechi can’t find out it was real. Because I was a danger. He’ll tell everyone that I’m a danger. And I didn’t mean to—”
“Of course you didn’t,” said (Y/N), squeezing his hand. “You were six years old, Kusuo. What six-year-old can control their emotions, let alone psychic powers? It was an accident, and it happened because you wanted to protect your friend. No one can fault you for that.” They smiled. “And you don’t know that Akechi thinks you’re a danger. Maybe he just wants to know if you really did help him. You two were friends. Maybe that’s what he wants back. His friend.”
            “Maybe. I don’t know.”
“But you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do,” said (Y/N). “But if you decide to do anything or just want to talk, I’m here, alright? I’m always here.”
“Even knowing I’m capable of harm?” said Saiki quickly.
“Everyone is capable of harm. Everyone is capable of good,” said (Y/N). “What’s important is that you choose to do good.” They smiled, lifted his hand, and kissed the back. “That’s why I like you so much.”
Saiki smiled slightly. “You always know what to say.”
“I just say what I think,” said (Y/N).
“I know.” And it meant the world to Saiki.

PREVIEW
Opening your phone you hit Vernon contact. Holding your phone to your ear it rings about five times before he answers the phone.
“Is everything okay?” It’s rare you call him let alone in the middle of the night.
“Not really. I’m outside, can you let me in,” you start to cry again.
“Yeah.”
Moments later he opens the door quickly. He’s just in a pair of boxer briefs. He must have been in bed already.
“I’m sorry,” you say as tears slide down your cheek.
He doesn’t say anything. He takes your hand leading you into his apartment he shares with Chan and Seokmin.
He shut the door, locking it. He hesitates for a moment before he rests his hand on your cheek and gently wipes away your tears.
“I told him I’m done. He came home after midnight with lipstick stained on his collar. I don’t wanna do this anymore. He doesn’t love me and I can’t love him anymore. I don't love him anymore.” You lean into his touch.
“I’m glad you left him. He doesn’t deserve you.”
“I’m sorry,” you whisper. You’re sorry for so many things. You know he cares for you and that he probably has always romantically liked you for a while just like you have. And no matter what you do you hurt him in one way or another.
“Stop saying that. You have nothing to apologize to me for.” He gives you a gentle smile.
“Can we go to your room? I don’t want to bother the boys. It’s already so late and I already woke you up.”
Reaching down he takes your hand in his for the first time and leads you to his room. He shuts the door and releases your hand. “Would you mind if I stayed with you tonight?”
“Of course you can stay here.” You’ve never been so happy you stormed out of the house in your pajamas. “Did you want me to take the couch?”
“No, I was hoping I could sleep in your bed with you. I just really want to hold your hand.”
He can’t help the smile that tugs on his lips. You crawl under the covers and watch as Vernon turns the light on and crawls into bed next to you. You both lay there facing each other. There is a gap between you. Laying your hand there you want to be close to him. You want him to hold you and to kiss you and tell you you’ll be okay. But that is too much to ask of him.
There is always something about Vernon that he’s always been able to read you. He must notice you’re struggling. He reaches out, taking your hand in his.
“I don’t want to go back to my apartment. I don’t want to live in a building that is haunted with memories of him and I.”
He takes a deep breath squeezing your hand. “You don’t have to. I’ll help you pack your things when he’s gone to work.”

It was Saturday, and Saturday typically meant that the weekend had finally come. And both of those things had yet to occur whilst I’d been staying in Detroit. Which, in truth, wasn’t the only thing to throw me completely off my game this morning.
Although honestly, it was a really big change.
Rosie wasn’t around yet. Apparently Saturday’s were sacred days within the Mathers household, seeing as the pre-teen liked to sleep in on the mornings she had off from school, which also meant that Marshall got to finally have a lie-in. Or, at least it seemed that way when I’d decided to venture from the confines of my room around about nine, after having had a brief breakdown over everything I’d woken up to.
The media was in meltdown mode.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Every news outlet from here to Beijing was talking about the pictures that had been captured last night in the car park to the theatre, as well as the one’s I’d taken with that particular girl outside of the women’s bathroom. It seemed that other fans had connected all the dots in the time between my head hitting the pillow and now.
I had zero idea as to what I was meant to do about it all. My phone was blowing up with notifications from every account that I held, as well as friends and even some family members I hadn’t spoken to since I’d told them where they could shove it the last time they’d come sniffing round looking for a payout.
It was the most nauseating feeling, believing that you’d lost complete control over a situation.
But it was just as I’d gathered up the courage to go knock on Em’s bedroom door that my phone rang once again. Only this time, it was one of the names I’d been hoping to see.
“Elia, you there?”
A shaky breath escaped me as I pressed my phone closer to my ear, hastily turning on my heel to head down the stairs.
“Mila.” I exhaled, but even I could hear the anxiety that lined my voice and it wasn’t because Mila and I had barely spoken since the whole argument we’d had over Lottie. No, this was down to me knowing that things had to be really fucked up because my manager had shared that same wavering tone. “I don’t know what to do. Everything– it’s all just blown up in my face.”
There was a long pause which followed my clumsy reply, I used it to slip out of the back garden door to escape the sudden confining feel the house had started to give me. Which seemed so stupid in hindsight, what with how big it was, but that thought alone allowed me to take another deep breath.
I shivered at the cold that overwhelmed Detroit in the early throes of winter but didn’t care enough to head back inside to grab a cardigan or even a pair of shoes. My mind honed in on the way my life seemed to be crumbling piece by piece, first with Lottie and her dad, then that whole back and forth thing with Marshall, and now this.
“It’s not as bad as you think.”
Rolling my eyes at the answer Mila gave, I could only huff out a mirthless laugh, stressed beyond belief.
“Yeah, it’s not like my face is plastered over every gossip rag across the world– oh wait, it is.” I sniped back, “And they’re all painting me out to be Marshall’s next big fling, and if not that, then some fucking groupie. Like I’m not a nominated artist too, as though all I am is someone to mooch off of his fame.”
Mila sighed softly, even after my heated retort, and I could hear it clearly over the rustle of leaves as well the birds that seemed to be chirping in the distance. I tried to let them ground me. “I didn’t mean it like that. It probably does look pretty bad from your end–”
I cut her off with a scoff– so much for trying for a bit of calm. “Bad? Mila, bad would have been me spotted leaving Detroit and people conspiring over why I was here in the first place. Not this.” I dragged a tense hand through my hair, “Em is gonna flip his shit when he sees everything.”
She sighed, again, and I could only rub tiredly at my eyes. “Babe, listen to me. You’ve not ever really had any publicity like this,” Mila started, and before I could think to lash back at that remark, she was already beating me to the punch, “And no, before you say anything, not like that. I know that you don’t want anything out of this whole fiasco, believe me the amount of times I’ve had to suffer through just because your ego wouldn’t let you take anything for free is insufferable. But anyway, I simply meant in the way that you’ve not really had many big knocks or hits like this throughout the press. Sure, your family and your background’s been brought up a lot, but babe, those are just conversation starters for you now, it sort of was back then too. This is all just scarier to you because it’s new.”
I had to take a second to really hear Mila’s words, for them to sink and settle before I could analyse them. In a way, she wasn’t completely wrong. I could at least admit that. Didn't mean that I hadn’t faced my fair share of backlash though, just maybe not on this level? And not over someone I was supposedly dating either, my brain unhelpfully supplied.
I closed my eyes, silently wishing for a cigarette I didn’t have, and then unclenched my jaw.
“I don’t know what I’m supposed to do.” I confessed to her quietly, then shivered when another harsh wind blew through the garden. I wrapped an arm around myself, to shelter me from the cold air or how exposed I felt, I didn’t know.
Mila stayed silent too, until I heard a large intake of breath and the sound of a door closing on the other side. “Here’s what you’re gonna do. You’re going to talk to Marshall, you’re going to figure out what it is you want, not just him or his team.” She added as a forethought, knowing me far too well. “Then the pair of you, you and him, can decide how and where you want to take this.”
I exhaled slowly and watched as my breath clouded the air, it made me wonder how cold it might have been over in London. “Right.”
Mila continued on, her familiar lilt taking back the weariness which had homed it minutes earlier, “I mean it’s not like anything’s actually happened, if you want to you two can just ignore it easy, wait for this all to blow over. It’s just gossip.”
My eyes widened and I stilled at her words.
But I must’ve been quiet far too long though, because Mila called my name and suddenly I was forcing myself to blink as I attempted to swallow back the memories of that kiss, of him holding my hand with all the care in the world.
“Right,” I repeated again, then cursed the way my voice cracked on the vowel.
Mila caught it right away and I felt rather than heard her internalise exactly what that could possibly mean, “You haven’t done anything– right?”
My mouth worked over words that wouldn’t quite come out and then winced when I heard my manager drop the phone to curse heatedly in Spanish.
It took a long minute before Mila had seemingly calmed herself enough to return to the call, time in which I spent worrying my knuckle between my teeth and wondering if everything that had happened with Em was even worth mentioning. If it mattered enough to him for me to voice it now.
“How long have I been telling you that you need to get back out there, to meet somebody and have some fun? I’m glad you took my advice, really, but I didn’t quite mean wrangle the biggest old-school rapper into your bed whilst holidaying in his mansion!”
I let my head fall into the hand not holding my phone and pinched at the bridge of my nose. I didn’t want to regret it, the things that had happened with Marshall, but Mila was sort of right. What had I really expected to happen between the two of us? He was a Dad, more famous than anyone could hope to be, and a tad bit older… Okay, a fair bit older– a decade, sue me. Hollywood had seen worse.
That wasn’t even it though, how had I yet to consider what the media, the press, the fans would think of it all? I supposed I’d pretty much found out.
“I didn’t sleep with him.”
Mila made an odd sort of noise at my admission which sounded tinny through the speaker, “Don’t lie to me now! Those photos don’t offer much, I’ll give you that, but babe, there was some sort of connection there.”
I fish mouthed again.
Mila didn’t seem to note the silence, “People are in actual awe over the look one picture managed to capture on his face! There’s no way you haven’t got that man wrapped around your finger.”
Blinking, I tried to recall what image she could possibly be talking about. I hadn’t seen anything of the sort. “I wouldn’t lie to you, Mils. Nothing like that has happened. It was just–” My mouth felt dry, the sort of dry you’d experience after being lost in a desert for days or just swallowed a spoonful of flour.
“Just what?” Mila prodded.
And I forced myself to finish my sentence, stare caught on the dampness that clung to the soles of my feet, “A kiss.”
I had a list now.
Of tasks to complete, one of which warned me to stay off all social media for my own good. Mila’s orders, not my own. But still, I couldn’t quite part with my phone even as I stepped back through the garden door into the kitchen, shivering at the rapid change in temperature and the sick feeling of anxiety that welled inside of me.
Even with that though, I noticed how the house now seemed to buzz, in a way which had me figuring that I was no longer the only occupant awake. So I swallowed back the lump of worry that sat heavy in my throat and made to trail my way further inside, ignoring the slight chill of tile that followed my feet.
I found him stood at the very top of the stairs with Rosie hanging off his hip, the silliest of grins plastered across her face which only appeared to brighten upon seeing me. “El!” She called out in excitement before she turned to fix her father with a ‘told you so’ glare, “See, she is awake!”
Marshall rolled his eyes at the rebuttal, but did evidently blow out a huffed chuckle in turn, choosing to let his daughter slip down his side and out of the captive hold he’d had her in for my supposed sake. He shook his head at her before he then turned to me, the exasperated look he’d gifted her disappeared the moment he saw my face. “You good?” He asked me, brow furrowing as Z peered between the pair of us.
“Where’s your phone?” Is all I answered him with.
His expression deepened at the nonanswer, but he scratched his head in thought before he recalled, “Chargin’ downstairs, I think. Died when we got home.”
Home, home, home.
I realised, not for the first time, that I’d taken to thinking of it that way too. Calling it London and not home each time it got brought up.
Swallowing once more, I felt another wave of nausea overwhelm me. Rosie’s head tilted in confusion as she quietly made her way down the staircase, hand sliding over the wooden rail. “I–” I tried, but fumbled for the right words to say. If there even were any. I let go of another breath, “You should go take a look.”
Marshall greeted my words with a look of reservation but did move to step down off the landing, making it to the bottom just as Rosie crowded me, her smaller figure slotting into my side with ease. I allowed a hand to come up and cradle the top of her head, hoping that whatever transpired from this wouldn’t sour things enough to send me back to London early.
And why was that my only hope? Instead of the way this could all impact me and my career, or the people around Marshall?
I didn’t move to follow Em as he made his way into the kitchen, socked feet padding over the tiled floor, much preferring the warmth that radiated from Z as I fought not to worry at my knuckles once more. I didn’t know whether or not I wanted to bear witness to his reaction.
“You’re freezing.”
The words caught me by surprise and so I blinked away from where I’d just been staring off into the distance, then peered down at the girl whose arms were wound around me. Rosie had her head tilted back, chin resting on the curve of my arm as she waited for an explanation.
“Sorry, just stepped outside for a minute,” I apologised to her whilst simultaneously answering the unasked question. It was subconscious, the action to rub a gentle hand up and down her arm in hopes to warm the pair of us up a tad, and Z countered her previous words by burrowing in closer.
“Are you leaving then?”
That next question immediately had me frowning, wiping away all the previous doubts that had just been running rampant through my mind.
“No, not yet.” I assured her softly, peering down at her once again. Her face was half-hidden, blonde hair mussed by sleep, and in that moment she looked so much younger to me. “Why you asking, hoping to get rid of me?” I teased sweetly, hoping that the method wouldn’t send her skittering into her shell and instead give me something of an honest answer.
The girl shook her head against my arm, then shrugged, “Just, you looked sad.”
A sad smile slowly eased over my features at that and I couldn’t help the way I squeezed her tighter. “Busy morning, I think.” I said in comfort, then thought about my next words, “But even if I was sad, doesn’t mean I’d just pack up and leave. Me and you, we’ve bonded, gonna have a hard time getting rid, okay?”
I pinched her side playfully with that, a move that had her squeaking and tripping over her feet to get away from my attack whilst still staying plastered to my side. “Don’t! You’re actually the worst!”
Laughing as she dissolved into giggles too, I relented on the tickling. And it was just as I went to reply that a sound had my head snapping up and over towards the kitchen doorway, heart stilling in my chest at the sight of Marshall stood there, phone in hand, his face void of any emotion.
“We need to talk.”
Rosie appeared to be all too aware of the sudden tension that dragged between us then, as well as the coil of nerves which straightened my spine, because she let her arms slip from my waist and took her hand in mine, squeezing ever so as she turned to look up at me. Obviously confused, she had no words to offer but the sentiment was clear anyway, she cared enough to stand against her Dad without even knowing what was going on.
It threw me completely.
Marshall seemed to catch on to the silent protest too, his blank expression flickering with evident surprise before he managed to unclench his hand from around his phone and drag it over the top of his head. He slumped, the ridgid stress he’d just been wearing melting ever so slightly. “We just gone talk, Z. She ain’t goin’ nowhere, I swear it’s work stuff. Something happened and now we gotta work out how we gone fix it, baby. That’s all.”
Z stared long and hard back at Marshall and the man met her eyes dead on, showing her he only meant the truth. His words seemed to appease some part of her, I deemed, enough to have her tightening her hold on my hand once more before she reluctantly pulled away.
I only wished that they’d had the same effect on me.
“That mean we’re not having pancakes then?” She wondered as she trailed across the hallway to head towards the kitchen, Em’s shoulders dropped slightly when she approached and he moved to run a hand through her hair.
“Promise is a promise. Jus’ have to wait a little longer, cool?” He answered, gazing down at her before he finally allowed her to slip by after she’d given him a nod. It was with that in which he turned to face me again and I had no idea what was going to go down, let alone how he was going to react. So when he silently gestured his head off to the side, I could only force my feet into following behind him.
We ended up in a small office just off of the living room, one I hadn’t really been in before now and that was decorated sparsely enough to ensure that no one else did either, at least not often.
Marshall took perch at the desk in there, large and mahogany, and leaned across it to start up the computer monitor stationed on its top. I found myself trailing after him, shuffling awkwardly on a dark rug for a second over where to sit before I just rolled my eyes at myself and moved around the desk to sit on its corner, uncaring for the way Marshall’s brows lifted in slight surprise. Because honestly, if we were going to do this then I wanted to see what the fuck the media was rioting over too, and how was I meant to do exactly that from the upholstered cushion sat on the desks opposing side?
He didn’t comment on it, though his eyes did trail over me for a split second before the screen flickered through the usual start up and login. I watched him type in his password, noting how he didn’t much seem to mind me peeking, before my eyes flitted back down to his face, taking in the way the monitor's light flickered over his skin and how his tongue darted out to wet his lower lip.
I wrung my fingers together in a way that would occupy my mind, mouth pursing at the sight of the slightly reddened knuckles I’d abused earlier. My stare must have caught Marshall’s attention too because I startled a tad when he reached out to pause my fidgeting, gaze lingering on the raised skin before the pad of his thumb moved to soothe it.
Suddenly my tongue felt too big for my mouth and all I could do was stare before his startled gaze flickered up to meet me. It almost appeared as though he hadn’t even realised he’d done it.
“Z’s okay, right?” I found myself asking him as I cleared my throat after he’d withdrawn his hand.
His sniff filled the silence as his arm jumped over to grab the mouse, now focused on the screen. “She um,” He coughed lightly, the click of the keys filling his tense pause, “She gets a little weary about shit like that, I guess. People leaving. Had a lot of ‘em come in and out of her life, figure it fucked with her a bit.” Marshall admitted gruffly, purposely paying attention to the computer now instead of meeting my eye.
I continued to watch him though, content to wait. My patience earned me a little more.
“Thought she’d grown outta it though, you know? Used to cry for her mom when she’d drop her off, or when I took her to school. Shit was always worse when I had to tour. Couple years back, she even got upset when Maria, our cleaning lady, moved States. Didn’t come outta her room for days.” He shrugged lightly as he recalled it, acting as though it didn’t much bother him anymore, but I could tell that it was eating away at him still, how much he blamed himself for Rosie’s struggle. “Figure she likes you enough that it’s sort of– I dunno.” He sighed, then waved it all off, desperate to move on it seemed, “You know what, don’t worry about it. I’ll figure it out.”
I wanted to sigh then too, because how could he think that I’d allow that to just slide?
“I’m here for her too, you know.” I heard myself say after a second or two had passed and kept myself from looking over at him to garner his reaction to that particular statement. This was meant to be work. I was just here to work. Though, that reminder had long since grown old. “I get it, being scared to attach yourself to new people in fear that they'll hurt you by leaving too. And Rosie, she’s not messed up for feeling that way, it’s just a coping mechanism. One a lot of kids experience–”
Em scoffed at that and my eyes instantly snapped over to find him shaking his head at me.
I narrowed my eyes a tad, but not unkindly or in defence, just a little perplexed.
“It’s true. Sure, they might not all have had a childhood like hers or mine, or even yours.” I acquiesced, “But even the kids who have that apple pie type life and grow up with cookie cut families can still be scared about those they love leaving. Like because their Dad works abroad a lot so they don’t see much of him, or how someone forgot to pick them up this one time and made them wait so now they’re fucked up forever.”
I smiled at the small laugh that escaped from Marshall at that, probably thinking over how normal that had probably been for him as a kid. I got it. “Mind’s weird, man. Kids are adaptable, but they get just as scuffed up as the rest of us. Z’s the same, but she’ll figure it out.”
“Or, jus’ do what you did and hold onto it so tight that people have to fight their way into her life.” Em countered easily, earning an audible gasp from me before he was smirking away and reaching out to poke a finger into my knee, assuring me that it was all in jest, “And don’t call me man, that shit’s weird.”
“Why not? What’s wrong with man?” I protested, grinning now as I started to pester him, “We’re homies, aren’t we? Buddies? Brothers?”
I cackled when he reached up to crowd a hand over my mouth, shaking his head all the while, even as I shimmied to try and escape his onslaught.
“What about bud?” I asked him from over the top of his hand the second I could, trying to steer my head away as I swatted him with my foot in retaliation, “Or dude? Hey, how about bro? Bro’s a good one!”
“Elia.” Marshall warned in a low tone once he finally caught my wrists in his hands, stilling me completely. Though I could see the tiny beginnings of his smile.
My eyes flashed upwards to meet his when he stood up from the desk’s chair, “Yeah?” I only continued to push, hoping that it would get me somewhere. Where though? I had no idea.
“You talk too much.”
My smile was far too smug.
“First time I've ever been told that.” I rebuffed, letting myself lean a little further into his hold.
“Somehow I don’t believe that.”
Humming, my eyes flickered between his own. “What do you want me to call you then?”
Marshall stared back at me unblinkingly for a long second, before his gaze dropped to my mouth then away again. “Guess that’s jus’ another thing we can go ahead and figure out.”

“I’m innocent your honour.”
“You was caught with the murder weapon in your hands as well as being at the scene of the crime.”
“Would you believe me if I said that I found them like that?”
Y/n was sentenced to prison for twenty five years for murdering two men, she tried to justify her actions by telling the courts that she only killed them because they were rapists but apparently it was wrong of her to take the law into her own hands, who knew?
Little did they know that she had taken the life of just over sixty rapists.
What they don’t know won’t hurt them, right?
Tumblr media
“So Y/n, when are you out of the shit hole?” Rogan asked as she sat at the table where Y/n was shuffling cards.
“Soon. Got twenty more years to go.”
“How long have you already done?”
“Five.” Looking around making sure no one heard her, she leaned further across the table to the woman. “Look RoRo first rule of prison is that you don’t ask people what they are in for or how long they are doing.”
“What really? I keep asking people.”
“It’s like pointing in cemetery, it’s disrespectful.”
“Oh… I didn’t know.”
“She’s fucking with you with.” Kandi laughed as she came over to the duo, a cigarette hanging out of her mouth.
“Not about the cemetery thing.” Pointing a card to Rogan. “Dis-respect-ful!”
Rogan had been in prison for six months, Y/n took the woman under her wing after seeing the poor girl getting harassed, everyone was quick to leave her alone. “Noted.”
“What about you? I’ve got three years left.” Kandi asked as she was pulling a card away from Y/n, just to wind her up.
“Hopefully next year.”
“NO!” Kandi laughed as Rogan jumped in her seat as Y/n screamed. “You two can’t leave me, I’ll be all alone in this big scary place!” She then throws herself onto the ground.
“L/n get off the ground!” A guard shouted, she does as she’s told and salutes the guy.
“Prick. Anyway I’m only joking, I can’t wait to see the back of you both.” Going back to shuffling her cards she looked up at Rogan. “You need to keep your head down and you might get an early release.”
They have a game of cards whilst Rogan and Kandi talked about their plans for when they get out. Kandi kicked Y/n’s leg and nodded in a direction, Rogan was confused but didn’t want to ask.
“RoRo.”
“Yeah?”
“Remember, always keep your head down.” Before the woman can answer Y/n stands up, fix her clothes and walks in the direction Kandi had nodded in.
Kandi quickly packs up the cards and shoves them into her pocket, swinging her legs over the bench. “When I tell you to get down, you do it.”
“Why? What’s happening.”
“Just watch our crazy little friend.”
Rogans eyes stay focused on Y/n as she makes her way across the yard and walks up to a woman that she knew had only arrived a few days before, with the distance between them she couldn’t hear what the two women were saying.
“Get… down.”
As the words come out of Kandi’s mouth Rogan watches as Y/n punches the woman in front of her, the two start fighting. Everyone begins to drop to the ground as the alarms started blearing, Rogan flinches when the guards start to shoot, not like Y/n stops her assaults on the woman - only stopping and throwing her hands up in the air when the other woman stops moving.
“We’ll she her in a month or two.” Kandi says quietly as the guards start rounding them all up.
Four months.
She was in solitary confinement for four months, Y/n was no stranger to the six by eight box, the warden had gotten fed up of her behaviour so he cut her yard time in half - only allowing her to have half an hour of fresh air a day.
Not like she cared.
The woman she had attacked played a role in the pain and suffering Y/n and many more had endured, she was a well respected agent who took great pleasure in hurting others especially Y/n. It was as if it was fate that the agent was being sent to the same prison as Y/n was in - not like she believed in things like that, but fate nonetheless.
“Y/n!” She only had that as a warning before Kandi jumped over the railing and landed on her. “Fuck I’ve missed you so much!”
“I’ve missed you too.” Y/n wheezed out. “But get your fat arse off me.”
“‘M not fat.”
“No but that arse of yours is.”
“Stop flirting with me, I’ll start thinking you’re in love with me.”
“We’re married…”
“Not anymore, I divorced you when you was in the hole. Sorry.”
“And there I thought you’d wait for me.” Finally standing up Y/n looked around, frowning when she couldn’t see Rogan. Asking Kandi where their friend was, she went from being happy to be back in the wing to angry.
“S-she was attacked two weeks ago, she’s in medical.”
“Who?”
“Y/n…”
“Who Kandi.”
“You’ve just gotten back.”
“I’m not going to ask again.”
Sighing and shaking her head Kandi said the name of the woman who had attacked their friend Y/n spun around in the direction of the woman’s cell. The alarms were quick to go off and the guards making their way in to the wing, an angry Y/n being dragged out.
“I’ll see you soon.” She shouted to Kandi, the latter just nods and makes her way back to her cell muttering idiot under her breath.
It’d be another four months since she’d see anyone again.
Tumblr media
Y/n tiptoed her way over to where Kandi and Rogan was sitting at their bench, the other inmates raising their eyebrows as she puts her finger to her lips. They had all grown accustomed to her weird behaviour and how quickly she can go from laughing to beating someone up.
“Give me all your money!” She screamed behind the two friends, Rogan jumped whilst Kandi didn’t flinch.
Making her way to her seat she smiled at Rogan who happily returned the expression, she looked at Kandi and noticed she wasn’t looking at her. “What’s wrong?”
Kandi whispered into Rogans ear, Rogan then looked between her two friends nervously. “She said she’s not talking to you.”
“Why? Buttercup don’t be like this.”
“She said that you’ve been gone for a long time and things have changed.”
“Changed how? Nothings changed Kands, I promise I won’t go back in the hole.”
“You said that last time! And the time before that and the time before, oh and guess-“ Kandi snapped.
“I get it. I get it okay? I’m sorry alright. I just couldn’t let Anderson get away with hurting our RoRo.”
“I know but you promise all the time Y/n, you’ve been in the hole more times than anyone here and that’s saying something.”
“I like it, kinda feels like I’m home.”
“Don’t be such a dick Y/n, I’m being serious.”
“So am I!” It was her turn to snap, smoothing out her hair she apologised. “Look I’m really sorry Kandice, I swear to you I won’t do anything to get me into trouble- no I mean it honestly!”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
And just like that everything was fine between the pair. Kandi and Rogan told her everything that had happened in the eight months she was in solitary, which surprisingly wasn’t a lot other than a couple of fights happening.
Y/n’s left eye twitched as she stood in front of her cell. Someone had come into her place and trashed it. The whole wing went quiet as they all saw her standing there still as if she was a statue.
“Who?”
“Y/n, remember what you promised me.” Kandi said from the side of her.
“Who Kandi?”
“Y/n-“
“WHO FUCKING TRASHED MY CELL!” Everyone flinched as she shouted. She was getting angrier the longer everyone remained quiet.
“That would have been me, sweet cheeks.” The voice made her skin crawl. As she turned around she saw the guard who made it his sole mission to torment her after she turned him down.
“You-“
“Y/n, you’ve just gotten out.” Kandi hissed under her breath.
“Fucking-“
“Y/n!”
“PRICK!” His smile made her want to kill him right there and then. “But… it’s okay, I get it. No I really do.” Leaning over the railing she smiled at him. “Since catching your wife getting her brains fucked out of her by the fucking mailman - the same man she left you for, you’ve been real lonely, I hope you enjoyed my underwear around that small piece of useless skin that you call a dick.” The whole wing erupts in loud cheering - even some of the guards laughing - Y/n walked into her cell and started cleaning up.
The next morning the trio made their way to the rec room after having their breakfasts, sat at a table playing a card game Y/n caught a glimpse of a familiar face on the tv screen from the corner of her eye.
Her breathing picked up and her palms started to sweat, all she could see was so many different memories flash in front of her. It was like she was right there in the base alongside him. Memories she tried so hard to keep locked up right at the back of her mind under lock and key came flooding back. She could hear someone call her name but she couldn’t pin point where the voice was coming from or who by. Only snapping out of her memories when she felt a hand smack her across the face.
“Shit… Y/n I-I didn’t mean to do that.” Kandi stuttered, looking between Y/n and Rogan fear evident in her eyes.
“It’s-I’m okay. You smack like a girl by the way.” Chuckling nervously Kandi apologised but Y/n waved her off. “I need to get out of here.” She whispered to her two friends.
“We can go outside.” Rogan offered.
“No I mean I need to get out of prison, preferably like now.”
“What are you going to do, walk up to the warden and ask if he can let you out earlier?” Kandi laughed.
“Do you think he would?”
“No you idiot!”
“Why? I’m well behaved.” The girls in front of her raise their eyebrows in unison. “Okay maybe I’ve not been the best inmate but I can be good.”
They all knew that was a lie.
“Y/n be rational, you escape you’ll be wanted, you’ll get caught and have more years added to your sentence.”
“No because I’ll leave and then I’ll come back once I’m finished doing what I need to do.”
“You-I-Rogan deal with her.”
“I erm… Y/n you’ll be in so much trouble.”
“I’m doing twenty five years Ro, can’t get in more fucking trouble than that. Look I’ll be gone for a few days and I’ll hand myself in, they’ll probably give me an extra year or two which is nothing really. But I need your twos help.”
Kandi knew her well enough to know that she was going to escape with or without their help, despite not liking it she knew Y/n wouldn’t do anything without a reason. “Why?”
“I need to see someone. Kands I wouldn’t be doing this if it wasn’t important. So please help me.”
“Fuck. Fine, okay I’ll help you.”
“I’ll help too.” Rogan smiled.
“No, you can’t ruin your chance at an early release.”
“I’m helping.”
As Y/n watched the two girls argue about whether or not Rogan was allowed to help she came up with a plan. Gaining their attention she told them the plan, and off they went.
“This is such a bad idea.” Kandi whispered watching Y/n climb through the tiny window of the guards locker room.
“It’s a brilliant idea.”
“Just hurry up!”
“Stop distracting me!”
Finding the locker she needed, she opened it up and searched for car keys, hanging them out of the small window to Kandi she climbed out. Kandi was about to unlock the car when Y/n wrapped her arms around her.
“I’ll come back I promise.”
“Why? You could be free and have a life.”
“Like you said, I’ll be wanted and I’ll end up getting caught. Plus all I’ve ever known is a life in prisons so I won’t do good out there in the real world.” She shrugged. “I’ll see you in a few days. Oh, Kandice?”
“Yeah?”
“Thank you.”
“Be careful.”
Keeping an eye out she helped Y/n get into the boot of the car and locking it again she ran over to the window and climbed in to put the keys back, Rogan was waiting for her when she came back out and made a phone call - using the phone that Y/n asked forced someone to borrow them.
“Hi, is this Mr Boyd? I’m sorry to say this sir but your apartment has been broken into. Your neighbour rang the police. Yes. That’s fine sir.” Not even five minutes ago by when they see the guard running past their hiding spot and driving away.
“The crazy bitch has done it.” Kandi laughed, wrapping her arm around Rogans shoulder she kisses her friends head.
Tumblr media
Y/n had to bite her lip to force herself not to scream as Boyd drove like a maniac, she kept banging her head and it was starting to hurt. As the car finally pulled to a stop she slowly opened the boot door before he got out and locked her inside. Only climbing out when she figured the coast was clear, she falters when she makes eye contact with a child playing across the street - the kid waves and giggles at her. Putting her finger to her lip she smiles when the kid nods.
Hiding behind the wall she waits for Boyd to leave which wasn’t long, she breaks into his apartment. First thing she does is make herself a sandwich before sitting on the sofa, putting her feet on the coffee table and watch tv - it was nice to watch something without people talking loudly in the background. After showering she walked into his bedroom and went straight to the wardrobe in hopes there was still clothes from his wife. Luck seemed to be on her side because there was a few clothes left.
Looking at the photo of Boyd with who Y/n assumed was his parents she smiles. “You trash my place, I’ll trash yours.”
Within minutes the whole apartment was trashed. Not a single room was left unharmed by the bat she was using.
Stealing some money she found she left the apartment and made her way to the bus stop. Standing outside of the library with people walking around her not knowing who she was or the fact that she had broken out of prison, she went inside.
“Hi.” Leaning over the counter to see the name tag more clearly. “Paige, I would like to use a computer.”
“Do you have a library card?”
“I don’t I’m afraid.”
“You need a library card.”
“To use a computer?”
“Yeah.”
“But I don’t have one and I really need to use it.”
“I can give you one now.”
“I don’t want a card, okay. I’m never going to come back here so it’s pointless, I just need the computer for less than ten minutes.” Y/n had to bite her cheek in order to not shout at the poor girl who was just doing her job.
“But I’m not allowed.”
“I won’t tell if you don’t.” Paige nods and takes her over to where the computers were and used her login details, reminding Y/n that she only had ten minutes she rushed back to the desk.
She’s done within minutes.
Going back up to Paige she asks for directions which the girl offers, she thanks her and hands over twenty dollars that she stole from Boyd’s apartment. “For the computer.” She informs when the girl frowns.
The walk to her destination took longer than expected due to having to keep ducking down alleyways and into shops when the police went by, she knew the guards would have realised that she was gone by now and that there would be officers looking for her.
She had to admit the building was rather impressive.
“Excuse me miss, you need to sign in.” The man said from behind the desk.
“Oh silly me, my boyfriend told me that I could just go straight up.”
“Who’s your boyfriend?”
“Tony Stark.”
“He’s married…”
“Yeah, I’m his mistress. Don’t tell the wife though.” She winks and signs her name. “Can I go up now?”
“Y-yes miss.”
“Thank you. Oh, which button do I press? Normally he does it.” Thanking him once again she makes her way to the elevator and up she goes.
Following the voices she stood outside a room where the Avengers were sitting around laughing and talking. She sees him. She doesn’t realise that everyone sees her and stops talking.
“Who are you?” A red head said.
Taking that as her signal she walks inside, her eyes still on the man she broke out of prison just to see.
"I had to see this for myself. To know it's true.” All their heads snap to the person she was looking at.
Bucky.
“Buck… do you know who this is?” A blond man said as he sat further up in his seat.
“I-yeah, her names Y/n we were at the same base together. W-what are you doing here?”
“Like I said, I wanted to see this for myself.” A small smile on her lips, she started to pick at the skin around her nails starting to feel stupid for what she’s done because he didn’t seem too pleased to see her.
“You left me.” Bucky whispered.
“I-I know but I tried to get you out, I swear.”
“You left me there Y/n!” Before anyone could react Bucky had Y/n pinned to the wall by her throat and began squeezing. “We promised each other that we’d get out together! We promised.” His eyes filling up with tears.
“I tried James! You wouldn’t come with me.” Hearing that Bucky loosens his hold around her neck. “I got into your cell but you wouldn’t listen, I tried to get you to stand but you wouldn’t move, y-you broke my arm James. My opening was closing an-and I had to take it and I’ve regretted it every day but I did try I swear.”
His hold on her neck loosens until he’s just holding her, tears starting to fall from his pretty eyes, regret consuming him when he looks at the mark already forming on her neck, regret from hating her from the moment he found out she had left him there to rot, regret and anger at hearing he had broken her arm - hurting the one person even the Winter Soldier couldn’t hurt. “I-I-“
Y/n silences him by wrapping her arms around his neck and pulls him into her. Memories of her holding him in this way flashing through their minds as Bucky clung to her.
The only sound coming from the once lively room was Bucky’s muffled cries and Y/n apologising.
Tumblr media
“Oh by the way Tony I’m your mistress.” Y/n informed him as she pointed her fork in his direction.
“What?”
“I told the guy downstairs that I was your girlfriend and he told me you’re married. Which honestly I don’t think I can be in this relationship anymore so it’s over.” Everyone chuckles aside from Tony who’s still trying to figure out what’s going on.
“So Y/n, what have you been doing since getting away from Hydra?” Natasha asked. Bless their little hearts they tried to introduce themselves to her but she knew exactly who was who beforehand.
“I-fuck this is the best meal I’ve had in five years, thanks Sam. But anyway I was moving around a lot, may or may not have killed some agents that I knew were Hydra. So yeah not much really.”
Ever since Y/n showed up he couldn’t take his eyes off her, she looked so different yet the same, she was still the most beautiful woman he ever laid eyes on. When he was told she had escaped he felt different emotions, he was proud that she had gotten away from the horrors they were subjected too and forced to commit, he was angry that she left him behind since they had promised each other that they’d get away together and try to live a normal life - whatever that meant for the two of them. He was devastated at the fact she had left him behind, he thought that everything they had gone through together and the feelings they had for each other was all lies.
He got beaten for days after she escaped because he attacked the guards when they tried to stop him from going to her cell, he stood there at the doorway expecting to see her sitting on the wrecked mattress with a pretty smile on her face or at least her laying there with bruises after a beating but it was empty other than the mattress and disgusting toilet.
Bucky started to believe that she was dead just because he couldn’t believe that she left him on his own. For the two years he was there without his partner, his only friend, the woman who he had fallen in love with despite their surroundings he never put up a fight, he did everything they asked of him and more, he didn’t care if he died on missions - hell he wanted to die just so he could finally see Y/n again.
But here she was, sitting right next to him laughing along with his friends, looking just as beautiful as the last time he saw her. All he wanted to do was wrap his arms around her and never let go again, he wanted to kiss her just the way they use to whenever they were alone and knew that no one was watching.
“Right, well I best be off.” Y/n spoke bringing Bucky back to the present.
“W-what?”
“Yeah sorry, I’ve gotta go somewhere before I head home.”
“I’ll take you.” Everyone could hear the desperation in his voice but he didn’t care, he wasn’t ready to say goodbye to her just yet.
“I-okay. It was nice meeting everyone.”
“You can come back whenever you want.” Steve smiled, Y/n nodded her head knowing that she couldn’t but what they didn’t know wouldn’t hurt them.
Saying her goodbyes, Bucky took her down to the garage and ever the gentleman he opened the car door for her. Telling him the address of where she wanted to go, he didn’t question it just driving to the destination. He noticed that every time a police car went by that she put her head down when he asked she just shook her head and smiled at him.
He followed behind her as she searched the rows of headstones, he sees her face light up when she spots the correct one she was looking for.
Kneeling down on the damp grass she placed her hand on the thick stone. “Hey beautiful, yeah I know I’ve not seen you in five years but I couldn’t get here. I’m sorry. Oh I want you to meet someone.” Waving Bucky over, he stands by her side with his hands in his pockets looking at the name, date of birth and death. “This is James, the man I told you about. Bucky this is Evie.”
“Who is she?”
“I found her two weeks after I escaped Hydra, she was along seven other women they… they were in a sex ring. I managed to get them all out and got them to safety, I know the other girls are in protection and are now safe.”
“W-what happened to Evie?”
“The dark thoughts got too much for her, I didn’t get there in time to save her. She had taken her own life. I let her down after I promised that I would always be there.” A dry laugh falls from her mouth as she wipes a tear away. “But then again I’ve never been able to keep my promises, have I?”
“Y/n-“
“It’s true though isn’t it? I’ve got two girls back at home expecting me to keep a promise I made and I don’t want to break it but I really don’t want to go back, you know?”
“You have kids?”
“Fuck no! Jesus Bucky, me as a mum? Can you imagine? Terrible.” She laughs though her heart aches at the image of her being a mother, she wanted kids but that was before Hydra, before being sent to prison for killing the two so called men who had took it in turns to rape Evie. Don’t get it wrong, she didn’t regret doing it and would do it again in a heartbeat but she knew she could never be a mum now.
“You’ve always been caring Y/n.”
“And? That doesn’t mean-you know what? It doesn’t matter, I need to go otherwise I’m going to be in even more trouble than I already am. But it was good to see you again James, it really was. I hope you all the best.”
Bucky grabbed her free hand as her other was on the headstone. “You don’t have to go! You can stay with me at the tower an-and you could be a part of the team.”
“I’m not a hero James. Never have been, never will be. I’m the person you and your friends go after, I destroy everything.”
“No, no you’re a good person Y/n, I know you!”
Putting her hand on his cheek she shakes her head. “No you don’t.” Her face lights up very quickly when blue and red lights go by. “I’ve gotta go now James. I’m sorry I didn’t get you out, I’m sorry I wasn’t strong enough to stay there with you. I hope you all the goodness in the world.” Standing on her tiptoes she presses her lips to his in a quick kiss. “One for the road.”
Bucky stands there motionless as Y/n presses a kiss to the headstone, giving him one last smile before walking off.
The warden went bright red in the face as he shouted at Y/n. She couldn’t see what the problem was as she came back. She went back to court and her defence lawyer told the judge that she had only escaped so she could say goodbye to a dear friend, and that she had come back willingly and she didn’t run like most would.
The judge handed her an extra eighteen months to her twenty year sentence.
Kandi and Rogan saw her two months later after she came out of solitary confinement, both of them instantly wrapping their arms around her and refusing to let go.
Tumblr media
When Bucky got back to the tower that night he went straight into his room and refused to speak to anyone, he opened up the wardrobe and grabbed his backpack from the back, moving to sit on his bed. He found the dark red notepad and held it close to him, he remembered the day he got it - he was on a solo mission, as he was about to leave the office following the man that was trying to run away when a dark red notepad caught his eye, picking it up he flicked through the empty pages before putting it in one of his many pockets. Getting back to the base in the early hours of the next morning he kept it hidden along with a pencil he had stolen, once in the safety of his cell he began writing Y/n’s name over and over again, he then wrote all the little facts that he could remember from what she told him about herself. He kept the notepad with him at all times when he wasn’t on missions and when he was on ice he kept it hidden in his mattress.
Since Steve found him in that rundown apartment building and everything that followed Bucky didn’t read what was in the notepad, it was too painful for him but now that he knew she was alive he found himself reading what he wrote all those years ago.
He soon fell asleep with the notepad clutched closely to his chest.
A couple of weeks later the team were once again sitting around in the living room, when FRIDAY put the tv on and told the team they needed to watch the news.
“The prison behind me holds some of the most dangerous women in the country, one of the inmates who was sentenced to twenty five years for murdering two men escaped last month.” The reporter spoke, none of them understood why FRIDAY thought they needed to watch that was until a photo appeared on the right side of the screen. “Y/n L/n escaped and was on the run for two days, remarkably she walked back into prison and handed herself in. L/n has already served five years of her sentence when the esca-“
Steve paused the screen, all their eyes trained on the mugshot of the woman who showed up to the tower. A large smile on her face with no look of remorse behind her eyes as they took her photo. Bucky sits there and shakes his head as he remembers wondering why the meal Sam cooked was the best she had in five years, or when she mentioned that she hadn’t been to see Evie.
“Did you know?” Wanda asked him.
“No but it makes sense now though.”
“How do you mean?” Sam asked, so Bucky explains. “I wonder who she killed.”
“I don’t know but I’m going to visit her.”
Steve went with him to see Y/n but was turned away due to her being in solitary, the warden smirked as he told the pair that they could come back in two months to see her.
Tumblr media
The trio was sitting in Kandi’s cell when a guard called for Y/n, with a huff she went to see what they wanted, her eyes squinting when they said she had a visitor.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean that you have someone here to visit you.” He said sarcastically, unlocking the door so she could come out. Putting the cuffs on her wrist he gave her no time to try and walk freely as he started to pull on the cuffs. Leading her down to a visit room he pushed her inside once the door was unlocked.
“There’s no need to keep pushing me you-“
“You, what?”
“If you hadn’t interrupted me you’d know I was going to call you a cunt.”
“You’ve got a fucking mouth on you, don’t you.”
“Me? Never.” He goes to open his mouth but closes it, he just smiles at her instead and leaves the room. Turning around she raises her eyebrow at seeing Bucky and his friends on the other side of the table. “Fancy seeing you guys here, did you get lost?”
“No, we didn’t get lost.” Bucky says fiddling with him metal fingers.
“Oh, it’s just because I don’t get visitors so.” She trails off.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were in prison?”
“Didn’t think it was important.” She shrugged.
“Not important? You murdered two men!” Y/n frowned at the way Bucky raised his voice at her, hating the way he looked at her as if she was a monster.
“Two men who deserved it! They raped Evie.” She snapped, smacking her hand on the table. “I’ve never killed anyone that didn’t deserve it and you know it.”
Bucky frowns and instantly feels guilty for raising his voice. “I’m sorry.”
“Whatever. Are we done here?“
“Did you really escape just to see me?”
“Yep, stupid I know.” Before Bucky could respond Tony spoke up and asked how long had been added to her sentence. “Eighteen months, why?”
“Cap, you thinking what I’m thinking?”
“Yeah but will it work?” Y/n frowns as Steve and Tony continued to have a conversation between themselves, giving Bucky a questioning look he shrugs - not once taking his eyes off her.
“What are you two talking about?” Bucky asked them.
“Getting mouthy here out of this place.” Tony points over to Y/n, raising his eyebrow. “In the correct way.”
The door opens and before anyone could speak the guard comes in and drags Y/n out of the room saying “times up.” Bucky clenched his fists at seeing her being manhandled, Steve put his hand on his arm in hopes to calm him down - giving him a look that asked him not to do anything stupid.
A week later Y/n was told she had a visitor, with an annoyed huff she followed the guards, not even making a single comment as they tugged on the cuffs wrapped tightly around her wrist. In the week that had passed since her first visit, she couldn’t understand what Tony said - why would they want to get her out? What would they want with her? What would be the point in letting someone like her out in public when all she’s done is kill people?
Once again she’s pushed into the same room as before when she looks up she sees Bucky clenching his jaw and another man sitting next to him. “Back again?”
“This is-“
“Nick Fury, yeah I know who he is.” She cuts Bucky off. “I was currently in the middle of finding out what kind of flower I am based on my personality, so can we speed this up?”
Fury chuckles whilst nodding, pushing a folder across the table he gestures for her to sit. “You need to sign these papers.”
“What are they?”
“You sign these, you’ll be agreeing to you coming into SHIELDS custody.”
“And why would I do that?”
“Y/n you’ll be free-“ Bucky says.
“But I wouldn’t be would I?”
“Alright you won’t be in prison-“
“Yet I’ll be in a cell-“
“You won’t be.” Fury cuts in. “You’ll do the rest of your sentence under SHIELD, meaning you’ll work for us, help us stop Hydra and other organisations that are threatening to our world. Sign this and we’ll get you out of here within a few days.”
Bucky gave her a reassuring smile and an encouraging nod but she wasn’t quite sure if she wanted to sign, she’ll just be moving from one prison to another regardless of how they dress it up of what she’ll be doing for them. “Y/n?”
“I have two conditions.”
Fury sighs and rubs his eyes. “What are they?”
“Kandi and Rogan.”
“Who are they?”
“My friends, I want them out too.”
“I can’t do that Y/n.”
“Then I’m not signing.”
“Y/n they’re in prison for a reason.” Bucky tried.
“Petty crimes, the both of them. Kandi’s got three more years and Rogan can get out in a few months, it’s not hard to pull some strings.”
“They’re criminals.”
“So am I.”
Fury looks at Bucky then at Y/n. “Alright. I’ll see what I can do.”
“If they aren’t following me out of this shit hole then I’m not coming Fury.”
“You’re already the biggest pain in my backside.” He mumbled, Bucky chuckled as Y/n smiled proudly. “I’m gonna make a phone call, what’s their last names.”
Telling him their names she watched as Fury left the room leaving her alone with Bucky who had yet to take his eyes off her. She looked everywhere other than at him. He squinted his eyes at her as she tried to suppress the smile that wanted to make an appearance. She wasn’t going to back down - she knew that, Bucky knew that - but she was cracking and he knew it.
“Just give in.”
“Nope.”
“Come on, you know you want too.” She didn’t need to look at him already knowing he had a smug smile on his lips.
“Don’t know what you mean.” Bucky rolled his eyes and leaned over the table, his hand reaching out to hold hers, her eyes snapped from the stain on the wall to him. “That’s cheating.”
“You’ve never been good at that game.” He smiled softly. “If Fury can’t get your friends out of here, you’ll be an idiot not to sign these papers Y/n.”
“I can’t just leave them here, not after all we’ve been through.”
“I get it, I do but you’ll be wasting your life away.”
“Never had much of a life before anyway.” She shrugged, flipping her hands over so their fingers would link together. “I’m really sorry James.”
“For what?”
“For leaving you there, for not going back to the base earlier, for not telling you the truth about.“ she gestures to the room they were in. “Just everything. I’m sorry for everything.”
Bucky feels his heart tug at her words, he forgave her the second he laid eyes on her again after seven years without seeing her. He forgave her when she explained, so he didn’t understand why she was apologising again. “W-what do you mean when you said for not going back to the base earlier?”
“I-I found us a safe place to call home it was off grid and in the middle of nowhere, it was perfect for us. I went back to get you, I hoped that you would listen this time.” She chuckled. “I got inside and it was chaos, the agents were dropping like flies and I wasn’t even the one doing anything, but anyway I get to your cell and it was empty, an agent shot me in the chest and told me that you had gone rogue, that it was a stupid idea to send the Soldat to kill his best friend but I thought she was lying and you were killed.” The agent she was talking about was the very same one she attacked in the yard, her face dropped as she came face to face with the person she shot in the chest and left for dead.
“You-you got shot in the chest? Y/n!”
“What? I’m still alive aren’t I?”
“But how?”
“Because the thought of you still alive kept me alive.”
“Funny.”
“Hilarious.” She winked at him, once again he rolls his eyes at her. “I’m joking, I don’t know why or how I survived but I did. But anyway a week later I find the two men who hurt Evie and killed them, then got caught, got arrested and then sent here.”
Fury comes back into the room just as Bucky was about to say something. “All three of you will be released tomorrow morning as long as you sign these papers.”
“Tomorrow? But it’s sponge cake for dessert tomorrow.” She frowns, both men give her a deadpan look. “Sponge cake!”
“Well don’t sign and stay here then.”
“You was meant to say ‘don’t worry Y/n I’ll get you a sponge cake’ and I’ll then go ‘oh no it’s fine Fury’ and then you was going to say ‘no, no it’s fine, you deserve it for being the absolute best’ but no you had to ruin it.” Fury’s lips twitched and she could see that he was trying not to smile, Bucky on the other hand was having to bite his fist in order to stop himself from laughing.
“You going to sign or not?”
“The girls walk free?”
“Yes.”
“Where do I sign?”
Kandi and Rogan looked confused when their cell doors were opened and the guards told them they have five minutes to get their things, thinking they had done something wrong and were getting moved they frowned when Y/n stood in front of their cells with her own backpack slung over her shoulder.
“What’s going on?” Kandi whispered as they stood behind Y/n, her and Rogan were holding hands, both nervous about what was happening.
“Do you trust me?” Y/n asked turning around to the pair.
“Of course we do.”
“Then don’t worry.” The doors came open and they were walked towards the large gates, the warden made a comment under his breath which Y/n raised her eyebrow to him daring him to say it louder but he put his head down. Y/n stepped outside first smiling when she saw Bucky standing there with the rest of the Avengers and Fury. Frowning when she realised that the girls weren’t right behind her. “Come on.”
“What’s happening?”
“You’re free.” Both her friends frowning in confusion. “I got you out. Fly my pretty butterflies”
“Is this a joke?”
“Nope. You can stay if-“
“No! We’re coming.” They both rush out and run up to her.
“So… now what?” Y/n asked Bucky who looks at Fury.
“We go to the tower and these two need to sign some papers and then they can go and live their lives.”
“Right. Well let’s go then.”
Sam and Wanda lead the two girls towards the jet with Y/n following when Fury calls her name and holds out his hand.
“Sponge cake! Knew you loved me Nicky.”
Tumblr media
After a long hug and saying goodbye eight times Kandi and Rogan were taken to their families, leaving with a promise that they’ll see each other again.
Bucky couldn’t sit still as Y/n was in a room talking to Fury, his knee kept bouncing the longer he waited, he ran his fingers through the short strands of his hair tugging lightly in annoyance. Nearly four hours later Steve came and sat next to him, both sitting in silence - that was until Steve broke it.
“Did you love her?”
“I did. Still do I guess.” Leaning forward on his knees he looked to the side at his best friend. “Is that stupid?”
“No.” Chuckling softly, Steve leaned back in his seat. “I still love Peggy and she married someone else and had a family. It’s not stupid Buck.”
“They could never break her, you know? Even with the chair and I think that’s what drew me to her. She helped me remember things, always reminding me who I was after it was my turn in that fucking chair.” Bucky paused and wiped his hands down his face. “She told me she came back for me and this whole time I thought she was dead.”
“Buck…”
“It’s fine. I’m fine. I-I just wish things were different.”
Steve didn’t know what to say so he put a reassuring hand on his best friend back and let the silence take over once again. An hour later Y/n and Fury emerged from the room, Fury greeted the two super soldiers before leaving the three alone.
“Are you okay?” Bucky asked worriedly.
“I’m good, just had to tell Nicky Boo all my deepest darkest secrets.” She smiled although it wasn’t easy bringing up things that she had tried to keep hidden, Fury put his hand on hers when it started to shake as she told him the things she had done.
“Nicky Boo?” Steve questioned, amusement lacing his voice and face.
“Yeah, but I don’t think he likes his new nickname.” She shrugs, laughing along with the two men.
“Right well I’ll let you two catch up. Welcome to the team Y/n.”
“Thanks Steve.” As the blond walks away Bucky once again couldn’t take his eyes off her, and like last time Y/n looked everywhere other than him.
“You really have a staring problem.” She mumbled.
“I’m scared.” Bucky whispered, his hand reaching out to hold hers.
“Why?”
“Because if I look away I’m scared you’ll disappear and this is all a dream.”
Squeezing his hand Y/n steps closer and puts her hand on his chest, feeling his heart beating steadily. “It’s not a dream Bucky. I’m right here, I promise I’m not going to disappear.”
Bucky sighed a breath of relief at her words, putting his forehead against hers he closed his eyes. “I missed you so much.”
“I missed you too, and I’m still so sor-“ She goes to apologise again but Bucky didn’t want to hear it, so he kissed her. Both of them sighing softly as their lips finally touched after so long.
Slowly opening his eyes Bucky smiled. “It’s not a dream.”
“How’d you know?”
“Because normally I wake up just before we kiss.”
“Aw you’ve been dreaming of me?”
“Shut up.”
Y/n burst out laughing as his cheeks turned red, he rolled his eyes before pulling her closer to him and kissing her more passionately than before. Neither one of them knew really what was in store for them but they didn’t care about that, not now that they were back in each other’s arms.

Danny Fenton’s Field Trip to the Ghost Zone!
I have had the wonderful opportunity to write a fic inspired by the art of the wonderful @arisu-artnfics as part of @ecto-implosion. I ended up thinking it would be fun to bring in a trope from a completely different fandom, and write a Peter Parker Field Trip fic for Danny Fenton. Enjoy!
Chapter 3: The Field Trip
Ao3 | First | Previous | Next
Dash Baxter hadn’t expected that his class field trip would end up like this. He had been expecting a boring day at the planetarium, but instead they had found themselves in the Ghost Zone!
A lot of things had happened all at once. First they had fallen through a portal and landed in the Ghost Zone. Then their bus driver had abandoned them to dive through the portal as it closed, trapping them all behind him. And then, while the rest of the group was grappling with the fact that they had somehow ended up in another dimension, Fenton and his friends had gone and recruited a ghost to fly them home, somehow!
Honestly, Dash could deal with all of that. It was a lot, but he was an Amity Parker, born and raised! What was weirding him out was how relaxed the nerds were about all of this!
Dash wanted it on the record that he wasn’t scared (definitely not). He was just a little nervous, okay? Don’t judge him! They were in the Ghost Zone! How could he not be at least a little nervous? This is where the ghosts lived! Everyone should be nervous!
Not the nerds though. They only seemed to be mildly annoyed by the fact they were stuck in the afterlife another dimension. He could understand Manson and Valerie, they were both pretty scary themselves. He could even sort of understand Foley, but Fenton was infamous for hiding from even the most tame ghosts, disappearing to some hidey-hole until Phantom took care of them. Heck, he even abandoned his friends a lot of the time, leaving them to be saved by Phantom. So why the heck was Fenton so chill now that they were literally flying through the Ghost Zone?
Dash wasn’t gonna be stuck wondering for long, Mr. Lancer had the same question. “Mr. Fenton, How are you so calm!”
Danny stared at him. “Mr. Lancer, the portal to the Zone is in my parents lab. Did you really think that me and my friends wouldn’t have tried going through?”
Mr. Lancer spluttered at Fenton’s dry response. “I had assumed that your parents at least had enough lab safety in place that you wouldn’t have succeeded!”
Dash may have been a jock, but he wasn’t stupid okay. He had seen enough movies to tell the difference between a laugh and a cackle, and the way that Fenton’s laughter threw his head back and shook his whole body was absolutely a mad scientist’s cackle. The sound almost scared him more than the fact they were stuck in the Ghost Zone.
“Mr. Lancer, we’re Fentons. If my parents go too long without blowing something up, me and Jazz will do something ourselves just to make sure it’s not too quiet.”
Fenton’s friends were nodding along. “Yeah, the first time Danny slept over at my house it was too quiet for him to fall asleep. So he went down to the kitchen, modified the toaster oven to reach 3000°, and poured molten salt into the bathtub. Gave my parent’s a heart attack.”
Lancer’s eye twitched. “How old were you when you did this?”
Fenton shrugged. “Like six I think? I’m not sure. I did learn to get permission first after that though.”
Dash and Paulina shared a look. Holy shit, Fenton was a mad scientist. Like, it was common knowledge that the Fenton parents were, but apparently they had all missed the fact that Danny Fenton was just as crazy as them.
They both jumped when a mechanical hand popped out from a panel in the ceiling and the voice of their ghostly driver echoed through the speakers. “That's science, baby!”
Fenton gave the mechanical hand a high five and chuckled. “Well I didn’t write it down, but I did learn something, so it probably still counts.”
Manson laughed. “Hypothesis, everyone likes explosions before bed. Conclusion, hypothesis incorrect.”
The nerds (and Technus) laughed while the rest of the bus stared at them. Dash didn’t know whether to be terrified of them or just glad that they were still nerds. Then Fenton made eye contact with him and grinned. Definitely terrified of them.
“Well, in the meantime, we have reached our first stop!” Technus said, as the bus made a bumpy landing.
Fenton frowned. “Wait what? Why are we stopping? I thought we were headed to the Far Frozen?”
“That’s the destination, but, since your parent’s shut down the portal, things in the Zone have been shifting around even more than they usually do. So we will have to go from stop to stop and get directions as we travel,” the ghost replied.
“So where have we stopped now?” Valerie asked.
“Jonny and Kitty’s place!”
Fenton looked out the window. “Oh yeah I recognize it! There’s their track.”
“Go see if they know where Dora’s castle is right now. That should be in the right direction.”
“Yeah alright, I’ll go ask,” Fenton said.
The rest of the class pressed their faces to the windows and watched as he walked out of the bus and over to the dirt track. He held his hands to his mouth and yelled.
“Kitty! Johnny! You here?”
There was a moment of silence, and it seemed like there wasn’t gonna be a reply. Then there was the sound of a revving motorcycle. It appeared from behind one of the embankments, with two people riding it. They rode towards Fenton, not slowing down as they got closer and closer.
Fenton just stood there, not even moving as they barreled straight towards him. Dash glanced over at the nerds to see their reaction, only to see them all looking entirely uninterested. Foley wasn’t even watching, messing with his PDA instead. Dash looked back out the window as his other classmates gasped. Just as they thought that Fenton was gonna get turned into a pavement smear the bikers slid into a skid, kcking up enough dust to temporarily block Fenton and the bike from view.
Dash and his classmates watched as the dust cleared, wondering if Fenton had just gotten run over, but when the dust cleared Fenton hadn’t moved an inch. The bike on the other hand, had stopped barely an inch in front of him.
The couple on the bike and Fenton stared each other down.
“Boo! 3/10 try harder next time.”
Dash flinched at the loud voice next to him. He turned to see Manson giving a thumbs down and heckling the ghosts outside. The guy rolled his eyes and the girl in the red jacket blew a sarcastic kiss towards her. Manson laughed and her friends rolled their eyes. The rest of the class was just staring at her, baffled.
With Manson seeming to have broken the staring contest, Fenton and the two ghosts relaxed and started talking, but whatever they were saying was too quiet for Dash to hear. They seemed to argue for a bit, before Fenton shrugged and randomly tackled the guy off his motorcycle.
The class watched in shock as they tussled in the dirt. The other ghost hopped off the motorcycle and went to join them, but Valerie cackled and jumped out the window of the bus. Lancer tried to reach out and grab her but Manson and Tucker blocked him. Not that it mattered, she was already out the window by the time he’d moved.
“Not on my watch Kitty!” Valerie yelled as she tackled the second ghost from behind.
Manson and Foley cheered as the four wrestled in the dirt.
Fenton managed to pin the ghost he was fighting quickly and he tapped out. The two then sat and watched as the others wrestled. It wasn’t long before Valerie also managed a pin, and they all helped each other up. They brushed their clothes off and shook hands, speaking for a moment more before Valerie and Fenton walked back to the bus.
“Okay, Johnny said that Dora’s is about 10° up with a 30° azimuth.” Danny said as he and Valerie climbed back into the bus.
“Alright!” Technus yelled. “Next stop, Dora's Castle!”
Dash fell back into his seat as the bus jumped and they were once again flying through the ghost zone.
For a long moment all the students just sat there, but eventually Paulina broke the silence with the question everyone was wondering. “What was that?” she screeched.
Fenton just looked at her in confusion. “What was what?”
“What do you mean ‘what was what?’ The fighting and stuff! You went from a perfectly civil conversation to fighting in the dirt! Valerie jumped out the window!”
“Oh that! Well Johnny said he wouldn’t tell me unless I fought him. So I did.”
Paulina spluttered at his relaxed statement before turning to their other classmate.
Their classmate who had literally jumped out a window less than ten seconds ago just shrugged. “I wasn’t about to turn down a fight.” Valerie said.
“Why?” Paulina cried.
Valerie just shrugged again. “It’s fun.”
Dash... had no idea how to respond to that. Apparently, neither did Paulina, because she just slumped into her chair.
Dash had no idea how to react to everything he was learning about Fenton and his friends today.

out of my league | pedri gonzalez [part iv]
Tumblr media
🎓 synopsis: Lately, you and Pedri have been more honest about what you want from each other, going on actual dates. You realize you’re ready for something more, and even though you’re nervous, you invite him over. tags: nerd and jock trope, mutual pining, first time together, suggestive but nothing explicit. (written in 2nd person but no mention of yn) | (around 2.9k words)
you can read the first part here, or go to the masterlist.
part 1
You and Pedri start spending more time together, like actual time. You don’t even know when it happened, when things shifted. One second you’re just two people hanging out, and the next, you don’t hesitate to call it a “date” anymore. You make time for each other, even when your schedules barely align.
But now, there’s this stirring inside you. You’ve been thinking about it a lot, maybe too much. You can’t stop imagining what it might be like to take the next step with him. The way he makes you feel, the way he treats you, the way he’s always there with that easy smile and kind eyes. It’s almost like you owe it to him, to show him how much you care, how much he’s made you happy in such a short time. You want to give him something back – something that says, I trust you, something that shows him just how much he means to you.
That’s when you decide.
You buy lingerie. You pick up a few pieces, holding each one up to your body in the mirror, but when it comes to choosing a color, it throws you. White? Red? Too cliché. Maybe purple? But then, that might be too… bold. You settle on black. It seems safer. Bold, but not too bold. Plus, you like the idea of him seeing you in it.
You make sure your roommate has plans to be out, giving you the perfect window of time. You know Pedri’s schedule; he’s always busy, but you think you’ve finally figured out a way to squeeze this in.
You don’t want to outright say anything, but you’re not sure how to get the message across without it sounding... weird. So you settle for just inviting him over, casually. The night before, you’re sitting in his car after a date, he’s dropping you off, and you decide to just say it.
“Hey, so, um, I was thinking...” you start, twisting your hands together, feeling more nervous than you expected.
He looks at you, brow furrowed slightly, trying to read your face. “Yeah? What’s up?”
You bite your lip, then take a breath. You should just say, “Come over tomorrow. I want to show you something.” Instead, you ramble, the words tumbling out of your mouth faster than you can even think about them.
“So, uh, tomorrow, like, I was thinking maybe you could, um, come over? But like, not for the usual... y’know, the... just to, uh, hang out? But also, like... maybe more?”
You see him blink, his face going from confused to more confused, and you almost want to slap yourself. Of course, it’s awkward. You’re practically doing backflips around saying anything direct. This is why you don’t do these things.
Pedri shifts in his seat, scratching the back of his neck. “Wait, uh... so, you want me to come over, but like, not just for... hanging out? More like, what exactly?”
You cringe at how he’s repeating your words. Why is this so hard?
“Yeah, well, I just... um... I got something,” you gesture vaguely, “and I want you to see it? But not in like a ‘come over for a surprise’ kinda way. More like a, uh, a ‘come see me’ kind of way?”
He looks at you for a long second, and then, it clicks. His eyes widen just a little, and you can see him swallow. You’ve never seen him this nervous. His lips part as if he wants to say something, but nothing comes out.
“Oh...” he says, his voice low. “You mean... like, you want to... y’know...”
You nod, your cheeks burning. It’s definitely not the smoothest conversation you’ve had. “Yeah. I mean, I want to be with you.” You can’t even look him in the eye as you say it.
Pedri is silent for a beat, his hand frozen on the wheel. Then he slowly exhales, and finally, he nods. “Okay. Yeah. I’ll come over. Tomorrow. I... I think I got it.”
He sounds so unsure, but also, there’s something in the way he says it that makes you feel a little better about the whole thing. The awkwardness doesn’t feel so bad. Just... funny.
You smile, your heart doing this weird fluttering thing. “Thanks,” you murmur, and you both just sit there for a second, looking at each other, both of you grinning shyly like teenagers.
“Yeah. Tomorrow,” he repeats softly, “Can’t wait.”
part 2
You can barely focus as you sit in the library with the group, your textbook open in front of you, the words on the page blurring together. It’s hard to concentrate with the knot in your stomach, and you keep looking at the clock, wishing the hours would hurry up. You're doing your best to hide it, but it’s obvious, your foot bouncing under the table.
Alexia’s the first to notice, her sharp eyes scanning you as she looks between you and your notes. She leans in, nudging Ana, who has her head buried in a textbook, and both of them turn to look at you.
“Are you okay?” Ana asks, but her expression is full of concern.
You try to smile, but it feels like you’re forcing it. “Yeah, just... stressed,” you mutter, avoiding their gaze. “I don’t understand any of this stuff.”
You’re not lying, in a way. You don’t even know if it’s excitement or anxiety, but it’s hard to focus on anything right now.
One of the boys, Arthur, looks up from his notes and notices the way you’re fidgeting. “You sure that’s all?”
“I’m fine,” you insist quickly.
“Don’t stress,” Arthur says, a reassuring smile on his face. “You’ll get it. By the end of this session, you’ll be an expert on this stuff.”
You smile back at him, but your mind is already elsewhere. Ana and Alexia, however, don’t let it go. As soon as the study session wraps up, they stay behind, catching you before you can slip out the door.
“Okay, spill,” Alexia says with a sly smile. “We know something’s up.”
Your cheeks turn pink as you fidget with your notes, but it’s too hard to keep pretending everything is fine. “I don’t know,” you mumble, “It’s just... I feel like I’m the topic of every conversation lately. Everyone keeps asking me if I’m okay.”
Alexia leans back in her chair, arms crossed, “It’s because I grounded Ana for the rest of the week,” she says nonchalantly, “and now she can’t talk about her life anymore.”
Ana’s eyes widen, and she slaps Alexia lightly on the shoulder. “Hey, not cool!” she protests.
Alexia just laughs, clearly enjoying the fact she’s getting under Ana’s skin. “Sorry, but your last ‘adventure’ traumatized me for life, thank you very much.”
You can’t help but laugh at their banter. Ana crosses her arms over her chest, pretending to pout, and Alexia nudges you with her elbow, her tone softening. “So, really, what’s going on? We can tell something’s bothering you.”
You’ve been holding this in for hours, but you can’t hold it anymore. You swallow, trying not to let your heart pound too loudly in your chest. “Yeah...” you look down at your shoes, suddenly very aware of how everyone around you is moving. “I... um, I invited Pedri over tonight.”
Alexia’s eyes widen, and Ana immediately smirks, her eyebrows lifting. “Ooooh, really?” she teases, not hiding the excitement in her voice.
You bite your lip, not sure whether to be relieved or more embarrassed. “Yeah, well, and I... I kind of bought some lingerie.” You wince as the words come out of your mouth, almost like you’re speaking in a foreign language. “And, I don’t know... I’m freaking out because it’s like... a big step, right?”
Both of their eyes practically light up, and you immediately regret saying anything. Ana looks like she’s about to burst into laughter, while Alexia just gives you this knowing, almost proud, look.
“Wait, wait,” Ana says, her grin wide. “You invited him over? And you bought lingerie?” She clasps her hands dramatically. “I’m excited for you! Just don’t do anything I wouldn’t do, okay?”
You can feel your face go red as you squirm in your spot, “I – what does that even mean?!”, you protest.
Alexia shakes her head, her lips curling into a smile. “No, no. Don’t do anything she would do.” She raises an eyebrow, “Trust me, you don’t want to go down that road.”
Ana’s mouth falls open in mock offense. “Excuse me?!”
You look at them, wide-eyed and a little mortified, but also kind of relieved that they’re being this chill about it. You let out a nervous laugh. “I don’t even know what that means, either! I just...”
Alexia shrugs, her tone softening. “Hey, it’s fine. You’ll figure it out.”
You’re still blushing, but the whole thing feels way less scary now that you’ve said it out loud to your friends.
part 3
You try to make sure everything is perfect, lighting some candles and putting on nice music in the background. You don’t know why you’re so focused on little details like that, but it feels like it matters.
You’ve spent hours getting ready. Your hands were shaking while you tried on the lingerie, the black fabric clinging to your skin. You almost couldn’t bring yourself to wear it, but then you remembered why you wanted this. You wanted to show him that you’re ready, that you want this.
You’re standing by the door, checking yourself in the mirror one last time, smoothing your hair and adjusting the straps on your shoulders. When you hear his knock, your heart skips, then you force yourself to take a deep breath before you open the door. There he is, looking just as good as you remember, standing there with his hands in his pockets.
“Hi,” he says, and his voice is so sure, so steady, it makes your own greeting catch in your throat for a second.
“Hi,” you manage, a little softer, your voice nowhere near as confident as his. You step aside, letting him in.
When the door shuts behind him, he finally takes a good look at you – really looks. His eyes slide over your figure, you watch as his confidence wavers just slightly, his mouth parting in surprise. His eyes lifting back to yours, his cheeks just a little flushed, like he wasn’t expecting the sight of you in a silky robe, the black lingerie just peeking through. He blinks, and then the corner of his mouth twitches upward.
“Wow... hi,” he says again, his tone different this time – lower, breathless, like he’s processing.
Seeing him so taken back gives you just the tiniest boost of confidence. You’re still standing there, a little unsure of yourself, but something in his reaction makes you feel bolder. You slip the robe off your shoulders, letting it fall to the floor. You let yourself breathe for the first time since he arrived.
His eyes widen, and he swallows, “You – wow,” he says again, but this time, it’s with a softer awe, like he’s trying to catch his breath.
You take a step closer, “You’ve been so patient with me,” you say, heart racing in your chest. “I... I wanted to give you a gift.”
The way he looks at you when you say that – you feel this rush of warmth in your cheeks, with him looking at you with so much adoration.
“I like being patient with you,” he says, his words so careful and deliberate. “Because you deserve it.”
His fingers gently curl around yours and it’s not just the words; it’s the way he says them, like he means every single one.
"Come here," he murmurs, his voice low and warm, as his hands find your waist and guide you closer. There’s a natural ease in the way he does it, like he’s done this before, like he knows exactly what he’s doing, but also, like he’s spent enough time with you to know exactly how to make you feel safe, wanted.
Your body presses against his, his hand slides up to the small of your back, holding you steady, while the other trails to your hair, fingers tangling gently but firmly, anchoring you.
And then he kisses you.
It’s not like your other kisses, sweet and tentative, this is something else entirely. This is passion, raw and consuming, like he’s been holding this back for far too long. His lips move against yours with a heat that goes down your spine, a rhythm that you try to instinctively match, even though you’re a little out of your depth.
You melt into him, your knees threatening to give out, but he’s there, holding you. His arm around your waist tightens, pulling you impossibly closer, while the hand in your hair tilts your head just enough to deepen the kiss. He takes control so effortlessly, steady, protective, and so perfectly him.
You hadn’t known kisses could feel like this. Like fire and sweetness. He pulls back, just enough to rest his forehead against yours, you’re both breathless, your chest heaving as you try to steady yourself. His thumb brushes lightly against your hip, his eyes soft but still burning with the same intensity from moments before.
"You okay?" he asks softly, his voice husky and low, and the way he’s looking at you makes you feel like you’re the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen.
You nod, your lips tingling, your heart racing. "Yeah," you whisper. Your fingers clutch at his shirt, instinctive, desperate for something to hold in the moment. He notices, of course.
"You want to help me take it off?" he asks, his tone gentle, but there’s playfulness in his eyes. Before you can even think of a response, he adds, "I’m sorry, though – I’m not wearing a matching set."
The joke catches you completely off guard, and you burst into laughter, the sound bubbling out of you before you can stop it. It’s exactly what you needed to break the tension, and his own laugh follows yours, warm and easy.
Between the two of you, and with a bit of fumbling – your hands brushing against his, fingers slightly trembling from nerves – you manage to tug the shirt over his head. It’s ridiculous how much effort it takes with four hands involved, but you don't care.
And then the shirt is gone, and suddenly, it’s just him – his athletic torso bared to you. The way his skin catches the soft light, the defined lines of his chest and shoulders, the way he looks at you with a mix of shyness and pride – it’s all too much and not nearly enough at the same time. Your eyes widen, and you drink in the sight of him.
"You say that," you murmur, "but this also feels like a gift."
He leans in again, brushing his lips over yours, his hands sliding back to your waist.
"Guess we’re both lucky, then," he whispers against your mouth, his words make your stomach flip, and before you can think of anything clever to say back, his lips are on yours again.
It’s more intense now, unrestrained in a way that surprises you – makes you dizzy, even – but it never feels rushed. It feels like he’s been waiting for this moment just as much as you have, and now that it’s here, he’s going to make it count. You melt into him, letting him take the lead, letting yourself just feel.
When you finally break apart to catch your breath, you can’t help but press a kiss to his jaw, your fingers tracing the line of his collarbone. "I want this so much," you say softly, letting him know you’re ready, that you trust him completely.
He nods, his thumb brushing gently over your cheek. "I know," he says, his voice steady, reassuring. "I’ve got you."
Before you even notice how it happens, the two of you are on your bed. It feels too small now, not enough space for everything you’re feeling, everything you want. But somehow, you make room for each other, shifting and adjusting until it feels like you fit perfectly.
Your lingerie set and his clothes become just another part of the decor of the room – scattered over the chair, the floor, tangled in the sheets. The candles flicker softly, making everything feel softer, more intimate. You’re grateful for it, it makes you feel less exposed, less vulnerable.
But you feel safe with Pedri and it's not just the way he holds you, though that helps – it’s the way he looks at you, like you’re something precious to him. The way his voice softens when he says your name, the way he waits, checks in with you every step of the way, as if he’s making sure you’re still right here with him.
And you are.
Every nervous thought you had before this moment, every doubt, every fear – it all melts away when he kisses you again, slow and deliberate, savoring the taste of you. His hands move over you gently, as if you might break, but there’s a heat in his touch too, a quiet urgency that matches the way your body reacts to him.
You pull him closer, your fingers tracing the curve of his back, the muscles shifting under your touch. He shivers slightly, and it makes you smile, knowing you have that effect on him.
The bed creaks softly beneath you, but it’s barely a sound in the background. All you hear is the soft rustle of sheets, the faint hum of your breathing mixing with his. It’s just you and him.
And it’s perfect.

Tumblr media
May 26th, 2024 - Monte-Carlo, Monaco
The streets of Monaco were alive with post-race energy. The Monaco Grand Prix always brought a mix of glamour, adrenaline, and unfiltered chaos, and this year was no different. Lando leaned against the marble bar in one of Monaco’s most exclusive clubs, a vodka soda in his hand. The buzz of the party surrounded him—flashing lights, pounding bass, and a crowd that only seemed to get louder as the night went on.
P4 wasn’t what he’d wanted, especially in Monaco, but it was respectable. And after the whirlwind of media interviews, debriefs, and congratulating Max on yet another win, he’d decided he deserved a night off. His friends—Max Fewtrell, some of his McLaren crew, and a few other familiar faces—had quickly convinced him that drowning his frustration in drinks and music was the only way to go.
By midnight, Lando was well and truly drunk. His usually sharp mind felt fuzzy, his words slurred, and everything around him seemed twice as funny as it actually was.
Max clapped him on the back. —Mate, you’re smashed.—
Lando laughed, spilling a bit of his drink. —Yeah? That’s the point, isn’t it?—
Max rolled his eyes but grinned. —You’ve earned it. P4’s not bad.—
—Not great either,— Lando muttered, though the alcohol was doing a decent job of dulling his disappointment.
Somewhere between another drink and a failed attempt at dancing, Lando’s thoughts wandered to Amelie. She wasn’t here—wasn’t in Monaco or even in the same timezone. She was in Indianapolis, filming Stranger Things, which meant she was probably on set right now.
He missed her.
He missed her laugh, her quick wit, and the way she could tease him relentlessly and still make him feel like the luckiest guy in the room. And the more he drank, the more that ache in his chest grew.
Without thinking it through, Lando pulled out his phone and stumbled onto FaceTime. Her name was right at the top of his favorites.
Meanwhile Amelie sat cross-legged on the couch in her apartment, a script resting on her lap. Her cats, Benny and Björn, were sprawled out beside her, Benny lazily swatting at the edge of the script while Björn snored softly.
The clock read 8:30 PM—late, but not too late. She had an early call time the next day and was debating whether to stay up or crash early when her phone buzzed.
She frowned at the screen. Lando calling.
It was unusual for him to call her at this hour, especially with the time difference. She swiped to answer, her lips curving into a smile as his face appeared on the screen.
Or, more accurately, part of his face. The camera was angled awkwardly, showing a blurry close-up of his chin and the edge of a drink.
—Lando?— she said, laughing. —What’s going on?—
—Amelie!— he shouted, his voice loud and slurred.
Her smile faded into a look of amusement and concern. —Are you drunk?—
—I might be,— he admitted, his grin lopsided. —I just...just wanted to see you.—
Amelie’s heart softened. —Well, you’re seeing me, idiot. What’s up?—
—I miss you,— he said, his tone suddenly serious.
She paused, her heart skipping a beat. “I miss you too, Lan. But it sounds like you’ve had a bit too much to drink.”
—I don’t care,— he said stubbornly, his words tumbling out in a rush. —I love you, Amelie.—
Her breath caught.
—What?— she whispered, her mind racing.
—I love you,— he repeated, his voice cracking slightly. —Like... fuck, I’m so drunk, but I mean it. I fucking love you.”
Amelie’s world tilted. They’d been dating for six months, and while their relationship was filled with passion and affection, they’d never said those words. Hearing them now, in the middle of the night, from a very drunk Lando, left her stunned.
—Lando,— she began, her voice soft.
—Say it back,— he mumbled, his head leaning heavily against his hand.
She bit her lip, torn between laughter and tears. —I love you too,— she finally said, the words feeling both terrifying and freeing.
His face lit up, even through the haze of alcohol. —Really?—
—Really,— she confirmed. —But we need to talk about this when you’re sober, okay?—
—Okay,— he agreed, his head lolling to the side. —G’night, Amelie.—
—Goodnight, Lan. Be safe.—
The next day, Lando woke up to the sharp sting of sunlight streaming through his bedroom window. His head throbbed, his mouth was dry, and his phone lay on the pillow beside him.
—Fuck,— he muttered, rubbing his temples.
Bits and pieces of the night before started coming back to him. The club. The drinks. And... calling Amelie.
—Oh no,— he groaned, unlocking his phone to find a string of messages from her.
Ames💛: Morning, drunky. Call me when you’re alive. We need to talk.
He winced, running a hand through his messy curls.
Lando took a deep breath, forcing himself to sit up despite the pounding in his head. The words “we need to talk” felt more terrifying than crashing into the barriers at Sainte Dévote.
Still, he wasn’t one to avoid things, especially not when it came to Amelie. He loved her, didn’t he? He’d said it—loudly, drunkenly, and probably incoherently—but he’d meant every word.
He quickly downed some water and a couple of aspirin before grabbing his phone and dialing her number.
Amelie had just finished her morning coffee, still in her pajamas, the soft Indiana sunlight filtering through her apartment windows. When her phone buzzed, she saw his name flash on the screen.
—Hello, lover boy,— she answered, a playful lilt in her voice.
Lando groaned. —Amelie, don’t start.—
—Oh, I’m starting,— she teased, leaning back on her couch. —So... how’s the hangover?—
—Bloody awful,— he admitted, rubbing his temples. —But that’s not important. We need to talk about what I said last night.—
Her teasing demeanor softened. —Yeah, we do.—
There was a pause, the weight of the conversation settling between them.
—Look,— Lando began, his voice quiet but steady, —I know I was drunk, but I meant what I said. I wasn’t just saying it because of the vodka or... whatever else I drank. I love you, Amelie.—
She swallowed hard, her heart racing. Hearing him say it again, this time sober, made it feel even more real.
—I love you too, Lando,— she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
The line was silent for a moment, the enormity of their words hanging in the air.
—Why didn’t we say it sooner?— he asked, his tone a mix of curiosity and regret.
—I don’t know,— she admitted. —Maybe because it’s terrifying? I mean, this... us... it’s been amazing, but it’s also a lot. And I guess I didn’t want to ruin it by saying the wrong thing.—
—You could never ruin it,— he said firmly. —You mean too much to me for that.—
Her chest tightened at his sincerity. Lando might have been a goof most of the time, but when it came to her, he never held back.
—I think I was scared,— she confessed. —Scared that if I said it and you didn’t feel the same, it would hurt. Or that saying it would change things.—
—Change things how?— he asked, his voice softer now.
—Make it... heavier,— she explained, struggling to find the right words. —We’ve been so good together, Lan. I didn’t want to add pressure or expectations.—
—I get that,— he said after a moment. —But, Amelie, loving you doesn’t feel heavy. It feels... right. Like it’s the easiest thing in the world.—
Tears pricked her eyes at his words.
—God, why are you so good at this?— she laughed, wiping at her face.
—It’s because I’m British,— he joked, earning a soft laugh from her. —Seriously, though. I love everything about you, Ames. The way you’re so passionate about your work, the way you’re kind to everyone around you, even the way you tease me about my stupid dance moves.—
—They are really bad,— she quipped, her voice lighter now.
—Yeah, yeah,— he said with a grin. —But my point is, I’m in this. All of it. With you. And I don’t want to hold back anymore.—
Amelie felt like her heart might burst. She’d known she loved him for weeks now, maybe even months, but hearing him say these things made it all feel so much bigger—and so much better.
—I’m in this too,— she said, her voice steady despite the emotions threatening to overwhelm her. —Completely. And I don’t want to hold back either.—
Lando let out a breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding. —Good. Because I don’t think I could survive another day of pretending I’m not completely obsessed with you.—
She laughed, the sound warm and genuine. —Obsessed, huh?—
—Absolutely,— he said, his grin audible through the phone. —I’m madly in love with you, Amelie Dayman. And I’m going to remind you of it every single day.—
—Careful, Norris,— she teased. —That sounds like a challenge.—
—It is,— he replied confidently. —And I intend to win.—
—Alright,— she said, smiling so hard her cheeks hurt. —But just so you know, I’m pretty competitive too.—
—Perfect,— he said. —Game on.—
The conversation shifted after that, flowing back into the playful, teasing dynamic that had always defined their relationship. But now, there was something more—something deeper and unshakable.
For the first time, they’d said the words. And nothing had ever felt so right.

💎🍚At the party, cheers
Title from CHEERS (SEVENTEEN)
Summary: Jihoon tries alcohol for the first time at his birthday party. He wishes he hadn’t.
CW: Emeto
Sickie: Jihoon/Woozi Caretakers: Seungcheol/S.Coups + Joshua
“To uri Jihoonie”, Seungcheol saluted and raised his glass. The rest of the group followed swiftly, raising their glasses and cheering Woozi’s name.
Jihoon blushed, hiding his face behind his hand. Soonyoung laughed at him, clinking their glasses together.
“Don’t be shy, Jihoon-ah”, he said grinning brightly, “be careful, tomorrow is all about you. Get used to it.”
They were all gathered in a big room at the company, a table laden with food between them. It was Jihoon’s birthday the next day but due to heavy schedules they had decided to celebrate it early with a nice dinner and going to bed late. If anybody had asked Jihoon if he wanted that, he would have told them no. But instead Jeonghan and Joshua had kidnapped him from his studio and brought him to the room where the rest of the team, as well as some managers, stylists and other company staff were waiting for them.
It floored Jihoon how much effort they had put into the celebration and how well they had hidden it. He hadn’t suspected a thing.
So instead of saying something that might be seen as ungrateful like “you didn’t have to” he settled on: “Thank you, guys. Really, I appreciate it.”
They settled down quickly, all of them eyeing the mouth-watering food in front of them. Sandwiched between Joshua and Soonyoung, Jihoon had to admit it was nice. After they had debuted team dinners hadn’t really been on the agenda, so this was a great respite. Sure, they had done team dinners on other members birthdays or the days surrounding them but it was special nonetheless.
“Three. Two. One. Happy Birthday, Jihoon-ah”, a chorus sounded, followed by cheers and hugs that Jihoon didn’t feel like refusing today. Not on his birthday. He could indulge if he wanted to.
Once most of the food had been devoured the staff had brought out a cake and now a knife was pressed into Jihoon’s hand to cut it. Seungkwan and Seokmin alike had complained how they were supposed to eat cake after the huge dinner but somehow they were the first to hold out their plates when Jihoon carefully handed out pieces.
“Jihoon-ah?”, Seungcheol said quietly from across Jihoon and held out a bottle of soju. “You wanna try?”
Unlike Jun, Soonyoung and Wonwoo who had tried alcohol the first time that New Year’s day - the first day of a year that somebody turned 19 years old they were after all legally allowed to - Jihoon had refused. He had never seen the appeal of alcohol and even now he hesitated. He just didn’t see the point in getting drunk.
But, what the hell, one drink wouldn’t hurt. He nodded at Seungcheol and then they toasted again, Jun and anybody younger than Jihoon with juice and the older ones with a glass of soju. Using Seungcheol as a role model, Jihoon just drank the shot in one go. He shuddered. While it was slightly sweet it was an acquired taste.
Soonyoung just laughed and even Joshua grinned at him, slightly teasing.
“Not a fan?”, Joshua asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Uh, well, I’ve had worse?”
“Do you want another one now that you joined us old ones?”, Soonyoung questioned, taking the bottle from Seungcheol and pouring himself another glass.
“Yeah, why not?”, Jihoon agreed and they clinked glasses before drinking the shot. The others cheered, smiling at Jihoon’s renewed wince.
“You’ll get there.” Jeonghan laughed.
The attention faded from Jihoon soon enough and they broke out into small conversation groups. Soonyoung, Joshua and Jun started a conversation about alcoholic drinks in different countries to which Jihoon couldn’t contribute much. His parents hadn’t drunk alcohol either, so his experience and knowledge was really limited.
After a few minutes of listening Jihoon took off his sweater. It might have been the end of November but he was feeling really hot all of a sudden. A headache pulsed in his temples - surely a result of long nights at the studio. He wouldn’t really mind going to bed soon, especially with the tight schedules that day, worsened by his mandated birthday v-live.
“Oh, Woozi-yah.” Soonyoung suddenly laughed and Jihoon turned to look at him in confusion. “I always thought you were a ketchup/mayo person with your pale skin and ability to get a sunburn even on cloudy days but even alcohol really turns you red, huh? Our sweet little lobster.”
Jihoon frowned at the comparison, slightly annoyed with Soonyoung. The other members had seemingly heard and there was laughter all around. As Joshua held out his phone, camera activated, Jihoon saw what Soonyoung meant. His face and his neck were flushed red and it was not from the embarrassment.
“Shut up, idiot”, he grumbled, crossing his arms. Under all the attention his heart was beating faster every second and he really didn’t feel like dealing with teasing. The hotness had not abated at all, neither did the headache.
The renewed giggling at his grumpiness didn’t make anything better but Seungcheol threw the others a few pointed glances, apparently noticing that Jihoon was not in the mood.
Watching Soonyoung and Jun debate the pros and cons of soju and beer was like a ping pong match. The two were getting louder and using animated gestures that made Jihoon’s head swim. Actually, no, everything was tilting. It was not nice at all.
Not really thinking about it, Jihoon rested his head against Joshua’s shoulder, turning his face so he was hidden against Joshua’s neck. The older didn’t even stop his conversation with Seungcheol, just wrapped his arm around the producer and pulled him closer.
Jihoon groaned as his stomach swooped. Even hiding didn’t make him feel better. There was a weird feeling in the pit of his stomach that did not feel good at all. It was like he could feel the soju swimming around with all the food and the cake and, oh, he had eaten way too much to be comfortable.
At the pitiful sound he made Joshua stopped talking and looked down at Jihoon. “Hey there”, he whispered, “long nights catching up to you?” He seemed mostly unconcerned, thinking that Jihoon was just tired. Which he was, just not just.
“I feel weird, hyung”, Jihoon whispered back, not even caring anymore about keeping up appearances. He wanted everything to stop. He wanted peace and quiet and a bed.
But Joshua just softly laughed. "You're just tipsy, Jihoon-ah. Maybe two shots as your first experience with alcohol wasn't the greatest idea. Just drink some water."
If this was how tipsy felt then Jihoon was never drinking again. He didn't like it one bit.
Joshua handed him a cup of water and Jihoon took a few sips. It was cold in his stomach, a stark contrast to how the rest of his body was feeling. It didn’t help.
"I want some fresh air", Jihoon mumbled, unsteadily rising to his feet. "It's so stuffy in here."
"Alright, but I am not letting your slightly drunk self wander the company halls alone", Joshua said and gripped his elbow, before rising to his feet.
"What’s wrong?”, Seungcheol asked. That was when Jihoon noticed everybody had grown silent and was watching them. This was not going the way Jihoon wanted. Nobody was supposed to pay attention to him.
“We're just getting some air, it's warm in here and Jihoon-ah is tipsy”, Joshua addressed the leader, “we'll be back in a bit. You all enjoy the party. We don’t have many opportunities like this.”
With Joshua holding onto his arm, Jihoon slipped out of the room.
Walking was even more awful than sitting. How could walking make everything so much worse?
Actually, no. It wasn’t the movement that made him feel even more like shit out of a sudden. At least he didn’t think so. It was more like one of his migraines when they hit without warning - the headache, the hotness, the vertigo. The nausea. But it couldn’t be.
Joshua was tugging him along gently, talking about this and that. Jihoon couldn’t pay attention.
Then …
💎
… it hit him like a freight train. One second he was feeling bad, the next it tipped him over the edge. Suddenly he was so queasy he had to keep swallowing the excess saliva that was building in his mouth. His feet were rooted to the ground. His stomach felt so unsettled that he was sure if he took another step he’d spew.
What a terrible way to start a birthday packed with schedules.
As he stopped dead in his tracks, Joshua whirled around, frowning.
“Jihoon-ah?”, he asked, then his eyes went wide. Jihoon lifted his hands to his face, pressing them to his mouth as he audibly gagged. The taste of soju on his tongue again wasn’t good. His stomach churned anew and he knew he was running out of time.
“Can you make it to a bathroom?” Joshua had a hint of panic in his voice. Jihoon shook his head, swallowing against the bile rising in his throat. His hyung rushed over and tried to pull him to the right direction but it was too late. All Jihoon could do was twist himself out of Joshua’s grip and lurch to the side before he burped up the first mouthful of alcohol, chocolate cake and various dinner foods. Directly into a poor potted plant that was just standing innocently in the hallway.
“Shit”, Joshua mumbled, rubbing Jihoon’s back as he continued to expel a mix of reeking alcohol and dinner. Luckily the spell didn’t last long and Jihoon was able to spit out some saliva before straightening a bit. His head was pounding in beat with his too rapid heartbeat and the nausea had reached a balance of feeling awful but I’m not gonna be sick in the next few minutes.
“You really are a lightweight, huh?”, Joshua mumbled, helping Jihoon take a few steps away from the mess and studying him thoroughly, “I should have guessed with your …”
He gestured up and down Jihoon’s body. Maybe Jihoon should have been offended by the insinuation that his height and weight made him pathetically sick the moment he drank but he couldn’t deny that it was likely.
“Can we just get to a bathroom?”, Jihoon whispered, humiliated. Throwing up in a potted plant really had not been on his birthday wish list. Also, the nausea wasn’t leaving, if anything it was growing again.
As Jihoon tried to take a step, his knees buckled and he would have fallen if not for Joshua’s reflexes. Everything was spinning.
“We’re never gonna make it there with you in this state. I’m gonna give you a piggyback ride, okay?”, Joshua suggested, though his tone left no place for arguments. Jihoon exhaustedly nodded. He didn’t think that he’d make it that far - or any further than two steps.
The older vocalist crouched down in front of him and reluctantly Jihoon wrapped his knees and arms around him. The sudden heightgain was making the dizziness worse and he groaned, dropping his head against Joshua’s back.
“Please don’t throw up on me”, Joshua said, a slight beg to his voice.
“I make no promises”, Jihoon replied, defeated.
They made it to the bathroom - but only barely. As soon as Joshua set him down in front of the toilet bowl, Jihoon immediately started gagging again, spit dripping into the water. He took a deep breath trying to calm himself down. It was a bad idea. He managed to choke a bit on the air he inhaled which triggered a small coughing fit. Immediately a gush of sick splattered into the water, turning it a disgusting, chunky brown.
“Oh, Jihoonie”, Joshua whispered, holding back Jihoon’s hair from his forehead. “You’re really not holding your liquor well.”
Jihoon didn’t answer, not knowing what to answer and too focused on not being sick again. After a few moments he brought up another wave of vomit, then another. It took a few minutes until he was able to stop again but Joshua’s presence did bring him some comfort. Jihoon had never been obsessed with birthdays but he could definitely do without vomiting either way. Finally he was able to slump back into Joshua’s lap, closing his eyes.
His head was not relenting and it still felt like his heart was trying to beat out of his chest.
“I’m gonna text Cheollie, okay?”, Joshua asked softly after a moment of just letting Jihoon rest.
The producer just nodded, barely moving his head. “I want water. And ice. My head is killing me.” he didn’t care how he sounded needy or whiny, he just wanted to stop feeling sick.
“Is this a migraine?”, Joshua asked, stopping from where he was typing on his phone screen. He mustered Jihoon with worry.
“I don’t think so?” It was more of a question than a statement. But Jihoon didn’t feel like thinking more about it.
“Okay. Close your eyes. Let me know if you need to be sick again.”
💎
It had been nearly twenty minutes since Joshua and Jihoon had left and Seungcheol was growing worried. Something had been off with Jihoon and Seungcheol couldn’t quite put his finger on why he doubted it was just drunkenness like Joshua thought.
Around him the rest of the members were happy to chat in small groups, bursts of laughter erupting. While they all seemed to have fun, the leader saw the small glances to the door where Jihoon and Joshua had vanished through. They all missed the producer, after all it was his party. None of them liked the fact that they were celebrating without him. The whole idea behind the party was to get him out of the studio and to relax for once. Woozi had been so stressed with production lately, writer’s block his biggest enemy.
Seungcheol looked down as his phone pinged and he swiped it open to find a slew of messages from Joshua, making his heart sink.
Shua (00:47): I need xour help Shua (00:47): Wre in the bathroms at the enf of the hal Shua (00:48): Jihoonie is drnk  Shua (00:48): and puking Shua (00:48): he say he has a headache Shua (00:48): don think it’s a migriane
The leader wasn’t sure why there were so many spelling mistakes in the messages, he just hoped that it was stress and Joshua’s struggles with texting in Korean. Not that he was extremely drunk too. He had seemed fine earlier.
“What’s wrong?”, Jeonghan asked, raising an eyebrow. Seungcheol assumed he looked as worried as he was.
“Shua texted. Jihoonie is drunk and throwing up”, Seungcheol informed him. Jeonghan’s lips turned down in a concerned frown. He clearly hadn’t expected that answer.
“He only had those two shots, right? He shouldn’t get drunk this easily”, Jeonghan mused, his eyes drifting over the other members who had not yet noticed the rising tension.
“Well, with his, uh, height and weight… maybe. Don’t tell him I said that”, Seungcheol said, rising from his chair. “I’ll go check on them.”
“Wait, I’m coming with.”
“No, stay. I doubt Jihoon wants any attention right now. If you come too we’ll have way too much attention on us.”
Reluctantly, Jeonghan nodded. “Take care of him.”
“Of course.”
The moment Seungcheol had closed the door behind himself, he rushed down the hall to the bathrooms where he hoped Joshua and Jihoon were. Indeed, once he reached the bathroom he could hear the sound of retching and a soft murmur, though not the exact words, even from the hallway.
He pushed the door open to find Joshua standing behind Jihoon, who was on his knees in the first stall, bent over the toilet. Joshua was holding his hair back, soothing him, as Jihoon continued to gag. Seungcheol winced at the sound and the following splash of liquid hitting liquid. Joshua, probably having heard the door open, turned around to Seungcheol, a look of relief on his face.
“Jihoonie, breathe. It’s okay. Cheollie is here.”
“Hyung.” Hearing the pitiful whimper from his most stubborn and reclusive member was awful. Jihoon reached up with a trembling hand to flush and tried to turn around in the tiny stall. Likely dizzy and disoriented, he lost his balance and slumped against the stall wall, resigned. Internally Seungcheol shuddered a bit at the disgustingness of it but he had a pukey, drunk dongsaeng to deal with.
As Jihoon looked up at him with streaming eyes, realization dawned on Seungcheol. Jihoon was not just a bit red but he was downright glowing from the red flush all over his face and neck. Combined with the awful nausea after just a bit of alcohol and the headache Joshua texted him about, it was obvious what was going on.
“Oh, Jihonie”, Seungcheol whispered, coming closer and kneeling down in front of Jihoon. “I think you are having a flush reaction.”
💎
Jihoon’s eyes widened in understanding and then he nodded, defeated. “It makes sense. Damn, I… I should have known. That explains why my parents never drank. This is awful.”
“I can imagine”, Seungcheol said, a tiny smile on his face. “At least we know you aren’t actually a lightweight.”
“Hold on”, Joshua, who had been silent until then, interrupted, “what on earth are you talking about? I mean, yeah, Jihoonie is basically Rudolph's nose all the way but what does that have to do with anything?”
“Hyung”, Jihoon squealed, indignant. “I really hate you right now.”
“What? It’s true!”, Joshua complained, “Besides, I call you Rudolph’s nose and get hate but Soonyoungie calls you a lobster and he just gets a shut up?”
Seungcheol laughed, the bickering definitely lightening the atmosphere. He winked at Joshua. “It’s Soonyoungie. He’s Jihoonie’s favorite, you know how it is.”
“I hate you all”, Jihoon complained, hiding his face in his hands, groaning. “I really don’t feel good.”
“I know, I’m sorry”, Seungcheol replied, instantly sobered up from the fun. He could tell that Jihoon was telling the truth and him admitting to not feeling well was always a cause for utmost concern.
“I’m sorry too”, Joshua said, a hint of remorse in his voice. “We shouldn’t make fun. But, Cheol, what is going on with him?”
“We think he is having a flush reaction to alcohol. Basically it’s an intolerance to alcohol. Whoever has it gets really flushed, like Jihoonie, hence the name”, Seungcheol explained, “It’s often accompanied by nausea and vomiting, a headache, a rapid heartbeat, low blood pressure and diarrhea. Did you seriously never hear of it before? I thought it was common knowledge.”
“I never heard about it. Ever”, Joshua said, a frown on his face. “Should I have?”
“I mean, it’s even called Asian glow because statistically people from East Asia are mostly affected by it”, Seungcheol explained.
“Well, apparently growing up in LA it wasn’t that common?”, Joshua guessed, “maybe my parents didn’t have it either so why bother warn me, I guess?”
“Maybe”, Seungcheol agreed.
His attention was drawn back to Jihoon who shifted, adjusting himself against the wall, eyes closed. He seemed unsteady and really unwell. His pain and exhaustion were written all over his features.
Needing to know, Seungheol asked: “Are you having other symptoms aside from nausea, vomiting and the flush, Jihoonie?”
“My head hurts”, Jihoon said, “And my heart is beating really fast.”
Seungcheol nodded, remembering the headache he forgot to list, reaching out to feel Jihoon’s pulse. It was racing, heart beating much faster than it should in a resting position. Seungcheol counted nearly 30 beats in 15 seconds and multiplied by four that was too fast. Jihoon really needed to lie down and rest. Not much else could be done for him, sadly. He’d just have to endure but a public bathroom was not the place to be.
“We probably should get you back to the dorm.”
“I really want to sleep”, Jihoon admitted, leaning forward a bit. Seungcheol reached out and cupped his face in his hand, tucking a strand of hair back. “But … the party? I don’t want everybody to have to go home because of me.”
“I think everybody should go home no matter the state you are in. We do have schedules after all, though I think we may need to cancel yours”, Seungcheol replied. The fact that Jihoon didn’t immediately protest the suggestion, underlined how awful Jihoon was feeling. “Shua, could you go back and tell the members that they should wrap it up and send a manager to drive us? I’m gonna take Jihoonie down to the garage already so we don’t have to wait.”
“I could just text them and help you go get Jihoonie settled”, Joshua suggested, worried.
“I don’t know if that’s the greatest idea”, Seungcheol said, laughing a bit, “honestly, I was surprised I was even able to tell what you were trying to say. I was actually a bit worried you were drunk too. You texted like somebody who has no grasp on language at all.”
“You try texting with one hand in English while you are holding back a puking dongsaeng’s hair the next time”, Joshua muttered, a bit offended.
“As long it’s not me again that’s fine”, Jihoon interjected, a look of defeat on his face, “but honestly, can you discuss this some other time? I, uh, I think I’m gonna puke again.”
Without warning Jihoon turned around awkwardly, just barely getting his head back over the toilet before he gagged again, spit dangling from his lip as he threw up, again. In an instant Seungcheol scooted closer, rubbing his back and making sure he wasn’t in danger of tipping over in his woozy state.
“Shua, go. I’ve got our Jihoonie.”
With a last glance back, Joshua left them alone.
💎
Once Jihoon was done, he slumped back into Seungheol’s arms, totally spent.
“Hyung. Home”, he demanded, his voice a bit slurred. “I’m so tired. My head hurts. I wanna sleep.”
“Okay, come on. Can you stand?”
It turned out that Jihoon, in fact, could not stand. He was too dizzy and weak. Seungcheol suspected his blood pressure probably was a bit low too but he had no way to check. Instead of lingering in the situation, Seungcheol just scooped Jihoon into his arms, the younger wrapping his arm around Seungcheol’s neck. Jihoon’s head came to rest against Seungcheol’s shoulder.
“I’ve got you”, Seungcheol whispered, pressing a kiss to the top of Jihoon’s head and shouldering open the bathroom door with his other side.
Within a few minutes they were down at the garage, arriving at the same time as a manager, who carefully helped Seungcheol set Jihoon down in the backseat of a car. Seungcheol slipped in beside him, letting Jihoon curl up against him.
At the dorm he gently set Jihoon down on his bed in the room they shared with Jeonghan and Mingyu. He helped Jihoon strip off his jeans and pullover, leaving him in boxers and a t-shirt, and tucked him in under the blankets. It was probably better for him to cool down a bit. Seungcheol mentally reminded himself to change Jihoon’s bed sheets in the morning, considering he had been kneeling on the floor of a public bathroom but for now rest was way more important. Jihoon was already half asleep.
Seungcheol dragged over a lined trash can, placing it on the floor beside Jihoon’s head just in case he felt sick again. He didn’t doubt he would be sick again during the night but maybe Jihoon could get some well-deserved rest beforehand.
It was a bit of a hassle, whenever one of them was sick, considering that they had no choice but to still sleep in the shared rooms. Seungcheol or Joenghan always stayed up with the sick member but whoever shared a room with a sick member was, no matter what they tried, often woken by them in the middle of the night if not also infected. Maybe they could have Mingyu sleep in a different room in this case.
“Hyung?”, Jihoon mumbled. Seungcheol sat down beside him on the bed, running his hand through the younger one’s hair.
“Hm?”
“I’m never drinking again.”
Seungcheol giggled.
“Sleep, uri Jihoonie. Happy Birthday.”
Notes: Happy Birthday, WOOZI!!! 🩷
I know his birthday date. I know it’s the end of November. I even wrote the date today multiple times. Did I still rush to finish it in time like two hours ago? …yes
I hope you enjoy this despite the rushed ending!

War of the Roses: Part IV
Tumblr media
Warning: Mention of miscarriages
It’s three in the afternoon when Bill’s phone rings with a number he doesn’t recognize. He’s in the middle of cleaning the pistols he recently shot, an effort to get you out of his system. He had taken care of himself in the shower last night, kicking himself for stopping you from unbuckling his belt in the barn. He let his imagination run wild later that night, picturing your legs wrapped around his hips, his cock slowly sinking into your tight, wet heat. It took less than fifteen seconds before he came.
The morning was just as bad, waking up with a raging hard on and the vestiges of a dream where you were in the bed beside him. It took him thirty seconds to relieve himself that time. So he did the only thing that he could and that was throwing himself into farm work. He unloaded a truck bed full of hay bales, picked up the feed store order and stacked it in the feed room. And when his muscles started getting sore, he chopped wood for two hours. By midafternoon, his energy was beginning to flag and he started cleaning guns to keep his mind and hands busy. But when the phone rang, he took a shot and answered it anyway.
“Yeah.”
There is silence on the other end and he reaches for the end button. But before his finger lands on it, a voice comes through.
“Bill?”
He doesn’t recognize your voice at first. You’ve always been soft spoken, but this is different. You’ve been crying and something twists in his chest. “Yeah, I’m here.”
“He kicked me out,” you tell him with no warble in your voice. But the next statement is more difficult for you to get out. “The horses…I don’t know…”
“What did he do to the fucking horses?”
“Nothing, yet.”
That “yet” makes him just as concerned as you are right now. You getting tossed out is bad enough to make him see red but to put animals into the mix of a human dispute, that’s just unconscionable. “Where are you right now? You safe?”
“Yeah, I’m fine. But I only have three days to find someone to take the horses. Bill, he’s going to send them to the knacker.”
“Fucking hell.” He sits back in his chair. “How many do you have? Four, right?”
You sniff and clear your throat. “Yeah, there’s four of them. There’s a stable in Tulsa that can take two of them because they’re therapy horses but they don’t have space for the other two.”
“Don’t you worry about splitting them up. I’ll have a rig down there first thing in the morning to pick up all four of them. Now,” he stands up and starts putting away the cleaning kit, “what hotel are you staying in?”
You tell him where you are and thank him in between sobs. He immediately calls his barn manager and tells him to drive the rig down to Thresher’s first thing tomorrow morning. He also tells them to throw a couple shovels and burlap bags in the back too. If he has to dig the rose bushes out himself, he will. He knows this may end the business relationship he has with Cal, but in all honesty, he doesn’t give one flying fuck. He has other weed farms; he doesn’t need one in Oklahoma. Thresher is already rich off oil and doesn’t need it either. And it’s better to end this before it even begins.
He packs an overnight bag, locks up the house and climbs into his car. It’s a four hour drive back down to Tulsa, to the hotel name that you gave him. He spends those four hours asking himself why he’s doing this. He’s had plenty of business partners before and never paid their wives any mind. A couple of them tried to get into his bed but he never cared for the mess that it creates being involved with a married woman. But there’s something about you, something that draws him to you.
The hotel he pulls up to is actually a motel right off the interstate. It’s in a dangerous area and the building is falling apart. This is absolutely not going to happen and he’s glad he made the trip down here tonight. The thought of you spending the night in this hellhole makes him just as angry as the horses going to the knacker. He leaves his bag in the car because he is not going to stay here tonight and neither are you. When he knocks on the door, you open it almost immediately.
You’re still crying, eyes puffy and red. You’re in jeans and sweatshirt, no make up, and your hair is pulled back in a messy bun. You’re still the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen. You immediately embrace him, pressing your face against his chest and holding on to him in a tight grip.
“I can’t believe you’re here.”
“I am.” He kisses your temple. “I’ll always come when you need me.”
It’s then that he realizes, standing in the doorway of a cheap motel off the interstate in Tulsa, that he can live without seeing Cal Thresher again but he can’t live without you.
***
You’re numb. That’s the only way you can describe the feeling of walking into a suite at the Mayo with Bill. You spent the day going through the suitcases that Cal packed for you and found he had included all your clothes, the jewelry that you arrived with from your parents, and fifteen thousand dollars cash. Those were all your belongings in the world. Your credit cards and checkbook were taken. Your phone lost cell service about an hour ago. All the vehicles you drove the last six years had been part of Cal’s fleet.
The world seems so big because you realize just how small you are.
“Here.” Bill takes your bag out of your hand and replaces it with a glass. “Drink that.”
You stare down into the amber liquid. Whiskey, of course. You drink it like a shot, throwing it down your throat and relishing in the burning sensation it leaves. It’s good to feel something right now. You look around the hotel room and realize it’s a suite, complete with a kitchenette, living room area, and what you assume is the bedroom further back in the space. It’s definitely a step up from where you had landed at the Oil City Motel.
“Thank you.” You know you should expand on that simple statement. Bill needs to know the depth of the gratitude you feel for him right now. He saved your horses. He picked you up from a dangerous part of town and brought you here. You remember that moment in his car on the drive over here, when he took hold of your hand and gave it a squeeze.
“We’re getting the rose bushes too. You, the horses, the roses, all of you are coming to KC until we figure out what to do next.”
You play those words back in your head and the big, intimidating world gets a little smaller, a little more comforting.
Bill brings a half-empty whiskey bottle over to you and adds more to the glass. “I told you to call me if you ever needed anything. You promised me would and you did. You kept your promise and I kept mine.” He takes a shot of whiskey straight from the bottle. “You go get a shower, watch Golden Girls or 90 Day Fiance, and get some sleep. I’ll pick you up after we get the horses.”
Now you understand why he left his bag by the door. “You’re not staying here?”
He gives you a slightly regretful look. “Not tonight. I’m staying down the hall.”
“What if I want you to stay?”
He cups your face, his thumb tracing over your cheekbone, and kisses you gently on the lips. “I would love nothing more than that, but I’m not going to have our first night together be under these circumstances.”
The circumstance is you thinking you owe him something and you realize, he’s not exactly wrong. “Cal knows we fucked in the barn.”
“Cal doesn’t know shit.” Bill gives you the most sinful smile. “Besides, that wasn’t fucking.”
You give him a slightly surprised look. “It wasn’t?”
He laughs. “No. That was just a warm-up.” He kisses you again, this time with more pressure, more want. Once again you can taste the whiskey he just drank, the smokey notes. He steps back and releases a shaky breath. “The fact you don’t know what a proper fucking feels like with a goddamn crime. One I’m going to fix. But not tonight, sweetheart.”
You watch him leave, the door closing very quietly behind him. Your face is still warm from the whiskey and the kiss but you find yourself smiling for the first time today. How ironic it took a divorce to provide you with an example of what genuine love looks like.
