As this year comes to a close here's hoping for more (I.e. any) Morally grey aroace protagonists in (adult) fiction. Because as much I love Ymir by Rich Larson, I can't just keep reading one book over and over again. I'm starving for Dirtbag Aces in media.

Talking abt ace attorney to someone who hasn’t and probably won’t ever play is always extremely entertaining bc like i get them familiar with phoenix and what he’s like but one day ill mention trucy by her full name and it quickly turns into “HES A FATHER????????”

Honestly sometimes I really hate how pigeon holed Good Representation has become because sometimes I want to write queer characters that just wouldn’t describe themselves with specific terms because it’s not how the character thinks and operates in the world

yapping about Briar. fellow Briar enjoyers assemble.
okay okay i don’t make it too obvious (or maybe i do, i wouldn’t know) but briar is my personal favorite character. i think about where the stories of all the characters would go and what their arcs would be a lot, but hers in particular is really important to me.
so i wanna talk about it.
first of all, she’s narcoleptic coded, right. we all know that. but her mom on the other hand reads to me, like, an alcoholic mother? and her dad is just willfully ignorant. either way, there’s a huge sense of neglect going on in that family. i mean go figure why briar would be the one doing most of the work raising her brothers. and of course she’s a party girl, because who’s gonna stop her? her parents? see yeah exactly.
so i don’t think it’s unreasonable to say she doesn’t have very strong parental figures in her life, at least not at home. but, and now you have to really hear me out about this one, i think baba yaga could take up a parental role in her life.
i know it isn’t much, but the seeds for her having at least a hint of a connection with baba yaga are there.
in the webisode “Stark Raven Mad”, baba yaga scolds briar for rambling about her party, and then as the commotion picks up she’s still exercising authority over briar in particular.
Tumblr media
then there’s thronecoming, wherein, when briar is sulking at the dance, upon noticing the picture on the projector, she asks baba yaga for answers, who provides them.
Tumblr media
and then skipping all the way to epic winter, after the girls become a little creeped out by her mannerisms and book it, briar is the one who makes sure to peak back in and give a parting remark.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
so i think there’s potential there to be explored. her feeling neglected at home and then finding solace in another adult at school would be neat.
but the fact that it’s baba yaga is important, so just put a pin in that and we’ll circle back to it.
now, i think out of the core four, she was (at least at first) the hardest to actually pin-point what the future of her story could look like. with raven, i think it’s pretty clear her journey is just continuing to combat the prejudices of the world as she fights for change, apple is now pretty much on a path to figuring out her own future as ruler of a kingdom and what that’s going to entail, and maddie is the goofball that’s there to have fun and be supportive along the way.
then there’s briar. and, let me be clear, no, in my mind that girl is not sleeping for 100 years with where things are heading; in the main universe of the story, briar will be free of the sleeping beauty destiny.
but it’s like, if she’s not gonna sleep, what more is there to actually do with her? what direction COULD her life go in? because if she’s no longer fated to sleep 100 years of her life away, then she can’t just party like there’s no tomorrow anymore. she’d need to decide what she actually wants to do with her life.
and i think i have an idea.
i mentioned her narcoleptic coding at the start with intent to bring it up again. see, you might notice that a lot of the fairytale aspects of ever after high can be read as allegories for real-world problems. for example, hunter and ashlynn’s relationship is treated in their world the same way society may look at queer couples or biracial couples. or how raven’s mom being trapped in a mirror is their world equivalent to not paying child support.
with that kind of correlation in mind, i think treating briar’s curse as a condition could open up an interesting opportunity. i think, in their world, curses as a whole could be viewed as a separate branch of medical specialization, with briar spearheading this notion of thought.
we know briar is well-versed in chemythstry already. in the webisode “Briar’s Study Party” she makes note of the fact that she’s been studying forever-after, and she demonstrates enough knowledge in the subject to enthusiastically teach it to her friends, who all end up acing their tests on it as a result.
Tumblr media
i think this is something she could potentially make a career out of. i think she could come to the conclusion that she wants to be able to help break curses for people everywhere, and could pursue learning to develop potions and elixirs to do so.
which could happen under baba yaga’s tutelage.
picture this: briar declares her newfound goal, to which baba yaga offers to teach briar all she knows in order to achieve what she’s set her sights on. briar—with an ounce of hesitance—accepts, and baba yaga officially takes her under her wing with the intent of mastering sorcery.
obviously, she wouldn’t lose who she is in this. she’s still gonna be an impulsive, adrenaline junkie who desperately needs a screentime limit on her mirrorphone. but in this process, she’d be rounded out by baba yaga and would in turn mature a bit from the experience. she’d get serious about life, but she wouldn’t let go of who she is at heart.
this could lead to her becoming the resourceful one in the main group. like on adventures, she’d be able to pull out a potion or whip something up (because i’m not going to let raven’s magic make her too o.p. she’s gotta have limitations) as a solution to problems. she could really have a role that proves useful and important to the story.
that’s my ideal pitch for where to take briar’s character.

shadowvanilla tiktok and fandom
you can't really say that a character is being twink-ified if he is literally a twink. he's a gay man, he's skinny, he's hairless, and he talks like angel dust.
you can totally not really like an artist because their portrayal of the character feels inaccurate to the reading you have of them. i feel like everyone has artists they think are talented but they read the character you like differently. and some inaccurate portrayal are genuinely forcing gay relationships into heteronormative roles, oversexualize an ace coded character, oversexualize people of color, infantilize disabled people, and put canon lesbians in straight relationships, but is calling a twink a twink an actual issue? and why is somebody reading a twink as a twink an issue? what's wrong with twinks? and why do you seem to think that by reading the obvious queer coding of a character they are somehow corrupting the character. what in the respectability politics is this.
and also yeah! sometimes people bypass canon to make something horny. no, that character does not wear that in canon. no, canonically they probably wouldn't do this. so thank god we're not in canon! let people have fun! no offense but especially on tiktok, you can just scroll away, and not go out of your way to make people feel like outsiders in their own fandom on their own profile. fandom is for freaks. fandom is where the freaks go after a long hard day. yes, they are going to post mpeg. move on with your life.

Ohh my god DRINKKK!! Dude I love them sooo muchhh. I just love imagining them being head over heels for each other yet constantly denying their feelings, because of how they view themselves, yet still finding comfort and solace with each other. They are so. YES. PERFECT. AUGH.
SHARE MORE ABOUT THEM PLEASE!!!
And I love how you use they/them for Ink and she/her for Dream!!
Tumblr media
GOD YEAH I LIKE THEM SO INCREDIBLY MUCH... tbh the main reason i started liking them was bc i was thinking abt them and how doomed yuri coded they were and. The worms Wormed in from there,,,,
I actually use he/they and she/they for ink and dream respectively but!!!!!! I love all hcs and interpretations of them for REAL. nonbinary people who are gay as fuck for real,, very inherrently queer ship regardless of how u see either of them i think...heart seeing them as t4t transmasc and transfem forever personally though so thats what i see em as hehe,, also in my head theyre both aroacespec (though the specifc kind varies from au to au though i do consistently see ink as ace and dream as demiaro :>>)
Im not sure how long these will be so...hcs under the cut lol
- okay well while in my mind while error is technically the First Entity ink sees that isnt just a normal entity, dream is like their First. Friend. you know. Like when error first saw him he was screaming and crying for the hills bc it was also his first time seeing another outcode so. that reaction BUT with dream she was more filled with gentle confusion... this is a bit after she unstoned in the apple incident but still was new to au hopping and naive to most danger so they became friends!!! Questionably so.
-to elaborate, when they first meet dream is still stuck on the ideals of toxic positivity and pushing through hardship no matter what... i think this is something they eventually grow out of and dream will eventually learn to see the need for balance eventually but one of their first disputes happens when ink is running low on ink and most of whats left are the Negative Emotions within him alongside the especially strong panic that he usually feels when they get like this... dream would try to comfort him and try to say that itll work out in the end no matter what and that they just need to push through and that itll be okay like normal comforting words because dream is an empath and can sense feelings right,,i feel like its comforting in some cases but when things get Really Bad and especially when the main reserves of feelings that ink has are Negative, they heavily override his normal sense of self and i imagine they get a lot more. Snappy.... theres also the additional hc thingy of ink also really overexaggerating his feelings and overplaying them a lot for the sake of trying to feel more intensely (doesnt work, just drains him faster and will never truly feel natural to him...personally think that ink feels a lot of disconnect from his feelings) which could be considerably offputting to dream (though before adding swap to the group she thought it wass normal because she had only seen the fake pretend nice joy of the village influenced by her aura and not Genuine Feelings)
I think eventually through the years they would learn a lot from eachother...like with ink learning to be more naturally charismatic and dream learning to see past toxic positivity and have his perception on emotions change for the better (ie in learning that having different emotions are okay, so long as there is a balance)
id do alot more hcs but tbh what it boils down to is: toxic codependent yuri. intensely up and down relationship where theres an insane amount of love and attachment but also a lack of self from the both of them because they are only able to see themselves as a Thing to the other. Also exes who turned out to be besties. Thry got together and broke up wayyy before blue (they casually tell him stories about it and for the parts that he does know about he is horrified for.) Oh and they share hobbies and do parallel play alot. dream is more music oriented and can play the cello and flute. ink can play the ukelele but hes more familiar with drawing and painting duh. Also they have a garden. they love growing flowers but their favourites are sunflowers. Also have writing sessions together. Also may/may not also have beautiful princess disorder. (The both of them)
im so sorry this is so incoherrent but erm. yeah im very normal abt them (half of this stuff comes from oc projection the other half is like. Mental illness while in the shower tbh)

ok reblogging to add my Media Analysis Feminism thoughts just for @paroxysmaljune because this was too long for a comment. MY THOUGHTS ARE SCATTERED I'm sorry.
Anyway hiiiii, so I'm not going to track down any sources for this so you just gotta take my word for it and understand that I am widely condensing this and thus missing out on a lot of important history stuff. But basically I've done a few papers throughout college focusing on pieces of media and the year they came out and how their representation of women mirrors the wave of feminism at the time. American feminism has had 4 waves as of now, you have the suffragettes with the right to vote, you have the 60s and seventies with women aiming for job equality in the work place and free sex/birth control, you have the 90s early otts which has never been explained well to me but it's the riot grrrl girl power movement with female punk which had some good stuff but also some weird stuff with gender roles being pervasive still. It was kinda the "not like other girls" era, where women tried to empower themselves by pushing down certain forms of femininity, but still frowning upon women who strayed too far from the feminine ideal. Also there was an effort to include more women of color (I think of bell hooks but I'm sure there are so many more). And then you have fourth wave which people say was started by the me too movement. Academia is like a decade behind current events so fourth wave was never taught to me in school, but my understanding is that it is about how the internet has impacted the reach of feminism AND a large focus on intersectionality, especially with queer folks and I would say we are still very much in the midst of this with fighting for bodily autonomy alongside trans folks with right to abortion and everything. So for example, the first comics with Peggy Carter came out in the 70s and she is in a comic book where she is on the front lines in the war effort, which is when there was the big push for women to have the right to getting the same jobs as men. And Percy Jackson came out during the early 2000s where Annabeth was really cool and powerful and smart and she didn't like makeup or wear dresses. These were both feminist at the time even though today we can see some of the flaws (Peggy Carter's life focuses on a hetero romance plot and men do all the big fighting, Percy Jackson makes fun of women who care too much (aphrodite campers) and not enough about their appearance (clarisse)). But we have to still acknowledge what it was doing at the time, because these are important stepping stones to where we are today.
Ace attorney is something that is both not feminist now AND not feminist at the time. Ace attorney came out between 2001-2008 (AND to be fair this is a game in adaptation so Japan's culture would have had a big impact on the characterization and plot of these characters. AND I never studied feminist movements in Japan so this is not actually gonna be the most in depth analysis but I'm not in school anymore so it's whateverrr). But it is sooo palpable to me that we are in the space between second and fourth wave. Because yes Mia is a woman studying law! She is up there amongst the men having the same job and she is just as capable as Nick is (maybe more so because she doesn't get nervous and seem to bluff as much as Nick does). So ok, second wave, check. But there is zero self awareness about the treatment of Mia (which is so dumb because Legally Blonde addressed the issue with overlooking women in law in 2001. So why are we still here... maybe they didn't watch legally blonde in japan). The me too movement was important in that it brought up the concept of calling out behavior from men that had been swept under the rug and ignored (also bigger themes of acknowledging the prevalence of SA of course that's just not relevant here) and NOBODY IS CALLING OUT THESE MEN!!! All the men in positions of power are engaging in this behavior! And nobody is saying anything so they're just getting away with it as a joke. So Mia may have the same job that men do but she is not being treated as an equal. Gumshoe the detective comments on how hot she is while on the stand in front of everyone. Miles and Armando both insult her by calling her young and stupid and inexperienced but they do so in a way that calls out her femininity. Miles uses bimbo, a term specifically associated with women that are stupid, and Armando asserts his masculinity over her in a weird paternalistic way by calling her kitten and emphasizing how young she is (even though there's only a 3 year gap) while also kind of flirting with her??? And it's like! Ok yeah the court rooms are ALWAYS insane in this game. Everyone ALWAYS makes fun of the defense attorney and the prosecution gets away with crazy stuff for comedy reasons. BUT NOBODY CALLS NICK KITTEN!!! Nobody flirts with him on purpose to make him uncomfortable while exercising power over him. Nobody is like "wow you've got a great ass Nick"! Ok I don't know if anyone actually calls Mia out on her boobs explicitly I think that would be too much even for this game but you get it! I think the closest comparison to make my point would be, what if every time they demeaned Nick they made a comment about his race. Like instead of being like "wow you sure are dumb nick" if they went "Wow you sure are dumb Nick which is weird because you're asian aren't you supposed to be smart hahaha". Likeee that's a microagression baby. In that same way, all the jokes suddenly get very pointedly about her femininity when Mia comes on stand! Yes it's not meant to be taken seriously but if we don't have anyone shutting down that behavior or being admonished for it in the narrative, then like... you don't see the gravity o f the situation. This is a real thing that happens in male dominated fields and it's awful! And it shouldn't happen! And it's not actually funny because it's too real. You can tell that this game happened during third wave because although it doesn't do anything noteworthy as far as empowering women, it DOES explicitly make markers of "good" and "bad" femininity. Specifically when women go on the stand with a lot of cleavage they are BAD because they're being SEXY and PROVOCATIVE which is a sign of BAD MORALS and they deserve to be MOCKED! But not before we objectify them!
Ok, I was kind of exaggerating at the end. I still really enjoy a lot of it and I've talked before about how I think Ace Attorney is kind of iconic for the range in acceptable forms of masculinity that they include, specifically for having Nick being a caretaker who saves the day by being in tune with the emotions of others as the male protagonist. And we DO see Mia held up as a super capable and smart lawyer who Nick relies heavily on. Nick always shows respect for her, which holds weight because he is the protagonist and the one whose eyes we are meant to see the world through, he is supposed to have the morally correct opinions. And Maya is really cool with her powers! But then again Maya is constantly getting kidnapped or something and needs a guy to save her, and Nick never stands up for Maya when people like Larry who is 7 years older than her try to flirt with her, he just silently stands there and thinks "wow Larry sure is weird". So it does some cool stuff! But not enough cool stuff! And most importantly, we as the audience aren't told that the bad stuff is bad in a strong enough way for it to feel like commentary. So in my ideal world, when people make comments about Mia, Mia would have one guy character on her side who supports her and they both say wow you guys are weird freaks and that's not ok! And ideally they would make fun of Mia for dumb things like her asymmetrical bangs instead of her womanhood. And also ideally Nick would slap Larry for being weird to Maya. And also Miles Edgeworth would reference Judith Butler to show how much he supports women. And also -
"ace attorney trials and tribulations turnabout beginnings" more like "ace attorney and the numerous instances of workplace harassment", why is literally everyone oogling Mia or demeaning her for being a woman GET ME OUT OF HEREEEEEEEE!!

Hello :)
What is in your opinion a) the best Sapphic ship and b) what are your headcanons for them?
This has been in my ask box since may, and it’s been on my mind for a while.
So sorry I took ages to answer, I was waiting to finish the series so that I’d have all the relevant info (I’d heard Thalia x Reyna is a thing and I wanted to see for myself) don’t worry I HAVEN’T FORGOTTEN ABOUT YOU-
Also, Life has gotten pretty badly in the way of things lately.
Tbh I haven’t really seen/paid attention to the sapphic ships in PJO.
Currently, drafting this before BoO, I’d say it’s probably Ruegard (Selena x Clarisse). While I very much think Beckendorf and Selena were in love, you can’t have two same-sex characters parallel Patroclus and Achilles and NOT have them be queer-coded (Unless Rick genuinely believed that Patrochillies really were just platonic besties, which is objectively false and factually incorrect and gay erasure honestly Rick).
I think Dying For Each Other IS queer culture (Valgrace for LIFEEEE).
While I swear by Aro/Ace Reyna and will die on this hill, the ships she’s paired with are cute dynamics.
- Theyna is badass. It gives similar vibes to Buffy x Faith from Buffy the Vampire Slayer (easily one of the non-canon sapphic ships of all time) I just love how when they first met Thalia kidnapped Reyna and Reyna hit her with a chair. I just see that and think “couple goals”.
- @demigod-shenanigans has forced me to think about Pipeyna and honestly yeah they would be really cute. Particularly their dynamic paired with Valgrace. I love Reyna and Jason’s friendship and I love her relationship with Leo.
- Reynabeth (is that a ship? It should be). Daughter of War Goddess x Daughter of War Goddess SUPREME!!!!
But also, we need more aro/ace rep in media. I heart my aro/ace siblings.
Pipabeth is also some of the most sapphic shit I’ve ever seen. I think it’s just RR not really knowing how female friendships work (or maybe it’s me never really having the kinda touchy-feely female friendship I see on TV all the time, and so being unable to comprehend that kind of platonic compassion, but I’m not gonna unpack that here) but you can’t tell me these aren’t two cottagecore lesbians collecting mushrooms and building a fence and shit that cottagecore lesbians do.
Also shoutout to Rachabeth and basically any sapphic Annabeth ship. She is bi in my mind.
Shelper is underdeveloped. There is so much potential in a mortal x demigod relationship that was explored a little bit with Perrachel but never fully. I need to write a fic about them at some point.
I was writing something earlier and ended up maybe starting a Nyssa x Lavinia ship (hardened grunge Lesbian x bubblegum Lesbian)
But my favourite???
EMMIE AND JO!!!
We NEVER get sapphic romances for old people. I NEED a spinoff about them. I mean, you’ve got the forbidden romance from being in the Hunters of Artemis turned marriage (Idk if they’re canonically married or not but they are in my mind) and you’ve got them being badass fighters and you’ve got them being moms to Leo and Georgina and basically everyone at the waystation. It seems like “giving up immortality for each other” is Rick’s standard for “true love” and Emmie and Jo did exactly that. I love them sm.

Really love how every time I argue with people on here about how actually trans men do not generally have it meaningfully better than trans women, people avoid actually explaining their points or providing sources and start calling me a little boy. Very fun. Love that. It's so fun to be insulted for asking asking people to explain their point
No one can actually explain that.
rhea ripley is so hot. and for what
for me to be all Weird Trans Woman about her
Honestly as an non binary person, I feel more and more pushed out of the community with the serious adherence to the binary. "if you Id as this you MUST be this thing, you're you're a liar and a faker and you're hurting other trans people" that, and the denial of trans men's oppression. It's just cruel and bitter, and seeing other trans people go down this path is pretty disheartening
it's so depressing
Well, you see, it's not like saying they're transitioning from black to white, because OBVIOUSLY, just like race, your soulgender is immediately apparent to everyone as soon as you plop out the womb
lmao so true
(also I've heard soulgender is a Black thing and it should be spelled with like, a space or a hyphen? so I'm probably gonna do that from now on)
"Trans men are the White People of the trans community" Oh okay so yeah this is just "Ace people are the White People of the Queer Community" all over again huh Begging other whities to stop comparing race and gender like this, makes you look stupid as fuck
pls
Fascinated to know if the "All trans women are nonbinary" crowd also believe all trans men are nonbinary
you'd think so the way they insist trans men cling to being AFAB lmao
Went to check /-/'s blog and she's reblogging pro Chat-GPT and anti-copyright posts now
I'm tapping the sign.
Tumblr media
as a nonbinary thing i feel like so much tma/tme shit just completely fucking forgets us like im not „occasionally mistaken as a trans woman” its a fucking coin flip!!!!!!!! my „AGAB” doesbt matter 2 ppl outside the the internet!!!!! all that matters is no matter what i wear no one wants me i their bathroom!!!!!
people don't even just hate you for when they mistake you for a trans woman anon they hate non-binary people AFAB too
i kinda feel like the discourse is becoming more mainstream now. im seeing a lot of trans bloggers who dont post much about trans issues making posts about it (usually along the lines of "can we be normal about trans guys please" which is nice)
good maybe the backlash will finally kick in
Idk if this is me generalizing but I’ve started noticing that headcanons of canonically male characters as trans women that get traction are usually skinny and have trauma or coded with anxiety or depression. Like idk if that means literally anything but just a weird observation I had
a lotta people on here literally define being a woman as when bad things happen to you lmao
I was looking at the Patricia Taxxon stuff (funny enough, did actually see you @ ed in deleted replies) and I saw the sentence “However, being discriminated on the basis of being perceived as a manly woman is just an adverse effect of transmisogyny directed towards trans men.” Which. Hey now. What about butch women. Like how does that not uniquely apply to cis butch lesbians, even if we ignore trans men entirely.
MAINSTREAM SOCIETY LOVES TOMBOYS
Man. It really sucks when a popular-ish figure you look up to turns out to be transandrophobic. Should have seen it coming ig. She was intersexist too, and those often go hand in hand.
well I mean it sounds like you shouldn't have looked up to her already lmao
IIRC from old drama, Patricia Taxxon also thinks toxic masculinity isn't a real thing that can harm men because it's just splash damage from misogyny and they should get over it, lol, so I'm not surprised if she's turned out to be weird about trans men
lmao literally just that radfem-libfem feminism-is-for-women comic huh
Tragic: local man forced to actually read Serano's writing for the theory he's trying to make even though the way she talks about transmasculinity and female gender nonconformity gives him a headache

Stumbled upon this video essay on Musical Rebecca and how Kunze/Lévay supposedly departed drastically from the book’s themes by romanticizing Ich and Maxim’s relationship, and I have Des Notes(tm):
The claim that the novel is not a love story but a study of jealousy. Obviously…romantic jealousy. 🤣 Granted, the narrator also has self-esteem issues, but the moment Maxim says he never loved Rebecca, the narrator’s seething jealousy of her literally vanished. It is very much dependent on her love for Maxim and her belief that he did love Rebecca.
While Maxim did murder Rebecca in the book, it should be noted that little to nothing contradicts his claim that Rebecca was a bad person. Outside of Maxim’s POV, Du Maurier wrote numerous red flags. To whit:
Ben is afraid of Rebecca (she threatened to send him to the asylum, per him). Frank, who had a wholeass affair with Rebecca, tells the narrator directly that goodness is more important to a man than beauty. Beatrice, who is depicted as straightforward and honest, doesn’t praise Rebecca outside of her beauty and charm, forgot Gran loved Rebecca, and deals with the narrator with uncharacteristic patience. Even Mrs. Danvers proudly boasted that Rebecca once flogged a horse. And then there is the fact that all of Rebecca’s closest intimates are creeps and sleazeballs. Mrs. Danvers and Favell may have their sympathetic moments (as in, they did care about Rebecca), but that doesn’t mean they are depicted as good people.
And then there is the fact that Rebecca deliberately manipulated Maxim into killing her, lol. The final twist is that she had cancer and was looking for a quick end. Mrs. Danvers confirms, even before she knew of this diagnosis, that Rebecca feared getting sick and would have wanted a quick end. Her pregnancy was a lie meant to push Maxim to his limits, and it worked.
If Du Maurier wanted to make Maxim shady and unreliable, she wouldn’t have done any of this. Instead, she did everything possible to justify Maxim and buttress his claim that Rebecca was bad, which is no doubt part of why the narrator forgives Maxim so easily.
So on that count, what the novel ends up saying in terms of theme is less “traditionalist chauvinist husband murders his flawed but morally clean modern ex-wife” and more “abuse victim finally retaliates against his abuser and struggles to recover from his trauma with the help of another abuse victim.” Problematic? Yeah, highly so (except for the abuse victim overcoming trauma part). But that’s the way Du Maurier wrote it. She absolutely gave Maxim (almost) every reason.
So in adapting the book to a musical, Kunze decided to opt to emphasize out this romantic strain of the novel. Understandable, given that musicals are very romance-friendly and don’t do thrillers easily. But it’s still not a radical interpretation from Du Maurier’s work. You do get Rebecca fans and defenders, but given that a pro-Rebecca fanfic sequel irked most fans, it’s safe to say most fans agree that Rebecca was bad and Maxim was a victim.
Bonus: As for the novel’s queer coding, it should be noted that in the novel, Mrs. Danvers explicitly says Rebecca never loved anyone. Not just men. This supports the whole Rebecca-as-sociopath canonical strain (although ace headcanons are a possibility) and less the interpretation of Rebecca being a possibly queer woman silenced forever by her murderous macho husband. Also, Beatrice is perhaps just as queer coded than Rebecca herself, and it is heavily implied (and Maxim confirms it) that she didn’t like her, found her fishy.
So in sum: This is less Book-to-Musical Wicked and more Book-to-Musical Notre Dame de Paris. Subtle thematic shifts, same plot, some changes to make it more musical-friendly. Sounds like your everyday book-to-musical adaptation to me.

If you had the Power of Editorial for one decision in the DC writers room and one decision only, what would you push?
gnome my friend i have to imagine you would not have asked if you were not prepared for the possibility of a very long answer!!
ok look look look so before i answer this you have to understand that jokes are one of the most important things to me in the world, especially jokes that are also something true and genuine and meaningful because those things are not mutually exclusive and often when put together can make something extraordinary. like the barbie movie you understand
the short answer: make Connor Hawke aromantic so a Green Arrow can be a Green Aro
the long answer!! i've talked a bit about my feelings regarding aro/ace representation in media and especially fanfiction before, so i'll try to keep this brief, but the thing i want to bring up here is that there is not a lot of aro/ace rep that can be explicitly confirmed within the media the characters are from. maybe it wouldn't be in character, or they don't have the word aromantic in the setting and let's be real a character saying they don't want to date is unfortunately still going to be regarded as being only aromantic coded, if that. Connor is already explicitly asexual, so (quick disclaimer that i haven't read a lot of his more recent stuff) it's already believable that he both 1. knows the term aromantic, and 2. would use that as a word to describe himself if he was.
moving on, Green Aro is probably one of the best missed out puns of all time i'm literally foaming at the mouth thinking about it, but it's also a pun that is genuinely meaningful. first of all, the aro/arrow wordplay isn't new, and the joke is a reference to and acknowledgement of aromantic community and history.
second, in terms of character relevance, i'll start with showing you something I found funny: last year for pride month, dc universe infinite (the terrible official dc comic reading platform) did a little pride round up. Connor was in there! i ended up taking this screenshot and sending it to my friends because the text cut off is hilarious:

like haha yeah celebrate dc pride. this guys got daddy issues. but for real, he has daddy issues!! he was getting bullied and getting into fights and the brilliant solution that he ended up going with to resolve all that was to go to a MONASTARY for the reason of HIS DAD WENT THERE. like my guy became a whole entire monk because his daddy issues were so bad. anyways, he continues to deal with his daddy issues by taking up the green arrow mantle after ollie dies the first time. and we all know about chuck dixon's habit of writing characters with such an insane agenda that he ends up unintentionally making them undeniably queer, connor is such a massive offender that he gets asked if he's gay genuinely so many times. like actually so many times. eventually i plan to make a full list of exactly how many times and also rank them because that would be funny for me, but its so many times.
anyways, he gets asked if he's gay because of his disinterest in women, which is a trait that im pretty sure multiple characters including connor himself bring up with regards to how that makes him different from his father. oliver queen is, or at least has been, canonically a womanizer. he slept around enough before he became ga that he didn't recognize connors mom when she told him he was pregnant, and he cheated on dinah which is crazy why would anyone cheat on dinah, and his relationship with dinah is such a long running and significant relationship in dc history. he is undeniably both romantic and sexual, while connor has brief relationship with a ghost which is. look that's just so aroace to me i dont know what to tell you. (im ignoring shado on purpose thats a whole other conversation)
being aromantic often means feeling pressure in some kind of way to find or want a romantic relationship. a lot of the time this pressure will come from family or friends telling you to find a relationship or being in relationships themselves. The entire world at large often puts pressure on people to have this great and grand and sweeping love story, whether people are inspired by fictional stories or real life examples. for connor, looking up to his father with his grand and sweeping love story, i mean like. to me this sounds like an amazing pressure pot for comphet.
so, to me, the green aro joke has a deeper and more specific meaning for connors character: it's about how he wants to emulate his father, and it's about how he's different from his father. It's about how there aren't a lot of examples of happy aromantic endings, and it's about the struggle to forge our own happy endings without those examples, and it's about how even though it might be difficult to find them, happy aromantic endings exist. and it's also a joke that makes me laugh.
anyways, thanks for reading all that!! and thank you for giving me the excuse to ramble about my guy!!! :DDD

I guess they thing that annoys me when it comes to She-Ra couples is not exaclty that it have too many couples but that they don't really make sense most of the time.
A lot of shows have a lot of canon couples, but most of the time they make sense and have some sorta of build up and development. Like in Harry Potter, it makes sense Hermione geting together with Roney, in Demons Slayer it makes sense Nezuko getting with Zenitsu, those are couples who are build to be together (honestly in the movies especifically Hermione and Rony are like, the only couple that had development).
But in She-Ra is like they make those couples so that some character don't end up single, like why does Lonnie have to be in a polycule with Rogelio and Kyle even tho she never showed interest in any of them? Why is Mermista and Sea Hawk a thing even tho Sea Hawk is a freaking annoying pyromaniac? Why Bow and Glimmer are a thing even tho they never had any chemistry and are so freaking boring together?
This is some Chris Chan levels of writing, every character have to be together regardless of whatever sense that makes (if you don't know who he is, basically he made the Sonichu meme and every character on the comic got together because he wanted a girlfriend). Is like in Boruto where all the cast started to date each other and most of them didn't make any sense
yeah, for a show that's about queer representation, they sure left out ace and aro representation. and even allo people sometimes choose to stay single. not everyone NEEDS a romantic partner.
in the end, spop really didn't do anything too progressive because they still valued amatonormativity over good character arcs. most of the platonic relationships were pushed aside for the sake of romance, and people who showed absolutely no romantic interest toward each other were suddenly in love (*cough* glimbow and scorfuma *cough*).
and the BFS suddenly included catra, just because she was now adora's girlfriend. all these allies and people who genuinely cared about adora, glimmer and bow, and yet the only person worthy of being in their friend group is the war criminal who tortured them for fun.
and it really sucks that the one of the very few canon queer polycules we have in media is.. a neurodivergent-coded queer kid, and his bullies. if they really wanted a good polycule, they could have gone with the BFS. but a lot of these were just for brownie points imo. they didn't really care about GOOD representation, they just wanted to cram in as much representation as possible.

i'm writing a book! and it's getting published!
if you just want the immediate details you can click the read and read a short FAQ! if you need more to get sold on it, stick around and check it out!
My YA SFF fantasy debut, ALVOSKIA: Call of the Infrans, follows an Unchosen one named Ally who is struggling to find where she belongs amidst her chosen one found family family when violence arrives at their doorstep, and they're forced to fulfil their duties earlier than expected. There's dragons and child soldiers and subverted fantasy tropes, some tone consistent werewolves, an almost entirely queer main cast with the majority also being characters of colour, and if you've been following my blog for any amount of time, it probably has something for you.
If you like ATLA: "what if there were multiple Avatars running around, and what if they weren't all automatically good people?" + past lives and reincarnation cycles
If you like Derry Girls: hot mess of teenagers getting in and out of trouble together while being ridiculous (and sometimes very sad)
If you like PJO: young teenagers with cool powers going on quests together and coming-of-age. And snark. Lots of snark
If you like Six of Crows: morally dubious collection of protagonists, some heisting may or may not happen, outsiders working together
If you like TDP: elves and dragons and long standing grudges and politics
If you like Star Wars: y'know how the Force like consumes you the farther you wander in? yeah that's the magic system here. + some shadow, death, and shapeshifter stuff
If you like HTTYD: you're here for the found family and fun fantasy aesthetic aren't you
Rep: queer (aro, ace, bi, pan, trans, lesbian, nonbinary, genderfluid, gay main characters, often times overlapping); Asian (Indonesian), Black, Sri Lankan and Pakistani (coded) rep; hijabi rep; one character is an amputee and one main character is Autistic.
The debut month is March 2026! Sometimes there is even very pretty (commissioned or friends) art for it:

All I want is cute ace fanfic and there have been some really cute ones! But like whyyyy make ace have internalized homophobia 😭😭😭 idk I think people are totally allowed to have their headcanons and I’m probably biased but I feel like all adeuce fanfic paints ace as the inconsiderate asshole (and he can be!!!) but they always take it too far 💀
🐝 anon
BEE!!!! BABY I MISSED YOU!!!!
(Also sorry to everyone for being inactive here I've just been on twt (dailyace0923) and I'm so sorry for leaving you all!!!!)
anyways,.....YOU ARE SO FUCKING RIGHT!!!!!
LIKE THE FUCK DOES THIS FANFOM MEAN 'ace has internalised homophobia' THE FUCK HE DOES?!??!?!
I'm not smart enough to as of right now, but onw day once I've collected all of his cards and am in a mental place where I I form a coherent sentence, I will make an analysis on how and why is a queer coded character!!! Mark my words!!!
ALSO!! YOU ARE SO RIGHT ABOUT IT BEING IN DEUCE X ACE FICS!!
Like what is this fandoms obsession with pitting them against each other over every little thing????? Like godforbid Ace liker Deuce but is in denial over something else except homophobia!!
And like I get it!!! It adds something!! In MOST not all media. However Twisted Wonderland??? Yeah that shit ain't gonna fly with a character like Ace that constantly talks about fashion, his hair, doing his makeup, etc
Ace is incredibly confident in his sexually. Attachment and confronting emotions?? Not so much
But like can the angst be about Ace not knowing how to feel because he likes deuce and not be because he likes a boy????
Like shit, he broke up with his girlfriend because she constantly wanted to do girly things and shit and he just wanted to be with his MALE friends.
And some people might wanna say 'oh he was only 12/13!!' YEAH AND YA'LL WANNA MAKE IT SEEM LIKE HED STILL GHOST SOMEINE NOW AT 16??? LIKE PICK A DAMN STRUGGLE??? IS HE BI AND AVOIDANT OR STRAIGHT AND ABLE TO HANDLE LONG TERM RELATIONSHIPS?? BITCH
ANYWAYS, Ace has struggles with intimacy, connecting and attachments in both romantic and some platonic relationships. Has he changed from MIDDLE school? Who knows.
Now. Does he have internalised homophobia? HELL FUCKING NO YOU FUCKING IDIOTS IN FACT I CAN SAY WITH MY FULL CHEST HE IS THE GAYEST FIRST YEAR, but I digress.
Sorry, I'm really passionate about my anti-straight Ace agenda that I think more people should join me in ❤️❤️

if i had a nickel for every time david tennant played a space alien who quoted a line from shakespeare to shakespeare and then the poet himself went "i might use that" i dont even know how many nickels id have. probably not a lot but its weird that it happened more than once
ahem
so doctor who s3e2 am i right. The Shakespeare Code
the most unrealistic thing about this episode full of witchcraft and bullshitting people is that shakespeare did the whole "now get out- *sees someone pretty* oh, ok, nvm sit down" but it was about martha and not david tennant. do i need to start shipping the doctor with literal shakespeare out of spite??
so martha and ten sit to chat with The Poet, right, and martha starts doing that thing where she tries to talk using words that pop culture associates with the time just for ten to turn to her and go "no, no, dont do that". rose tyler in the opening of Tooth and Claw is that you?
speaking of rose! "psychic paper, um, ..long story. oh i hate starting from scratch" right so martha doesnt understand the psychic paper because she's new. and i love ten's line here! "i hate starting from scratch"
its funny, because we know how much ten misses rose. we know how much emotional baggage comes with finding a new companion. yet we forget just how long the doctor has been doing this
i havent seen the classic era of doctor who, and i doubt anyone on tumblr has either, but the doctor has, presumably, been loosing people for a long time
& i appreciate how theres a real sense of experience in ten's line here. ofc he doesnt honestly mean "i hate starting from scratch", its just that when you do something for long enough little annoyances about it can tire you. and ten is, among other things, very tired
(similarly, i do very much appreciate this interaction between The Poet and ten. "and you, sir doctor, how can a man so young have eyes so old?" "i do a lot of reading." "a trite reply, yeah? thats what i do." & then ten's got this look on his face! tired eyes, slight smile, like he's softening. recognizing something of himself in shakespeare of all people. god i love him so much)
i think its fascinating, too, how theres a sense of.. unimportance(?) to his new companions when theyre new. like over the years, the people the doctor has interacted with have become just that- people. sure the significance and uniqueness of certain people stick out, but eventually you start seeing just how similar we all are, innately
and theres certainly something to love in that sentiment, that people are at their core very similar, and the doctor certainly loves humanity. but he doesnt know martha well enough for her individuality to matter entirely: she's another chance at happiness, another opportunity, instead of a fully understood person, to him
isnt there something so human in that? isnt there something a little bit tiring about having to unveil yourself to every new person you want to know? isnt it just a little tempting to pretend youre different? to pretend all that emotional baggage, all that history, doesnt exist? they dont know you, they wont unless you tell them, so dont. this is how you outrun the past, by throwing yourself into the future
(completely unrelated but this episode is so funny about queer stuff in hindisght. "so those [actors on stage in 1599] are men dressed as women, right?" "london never changes" like excuse me??? are you trying to imply something sir???
that whole "there was only one bed" scene in which martha is almost flirting but ten just completely ignores it
& then ten is annoyed that martha and shakespeare are stopping to chat so we get: ten: "come on, we can all have a good flirt later!" the poet: "is that promise, doctor?" ten: "oh, 57 academics just punched the air" pardon??
the witch [villain of the week] being seductive to trick ten? "thats one form of magic that isnt gonna work on me"??? oh??? ace ten confirmed????
and then the episode finishes off with banishing the evil witches by shouting "expelliarmus!" and ten throwing in a "good old JK". like i know they didnt know she was an ass in 2007 but man this episode is a rollercoaster)
um. yeah. im normal about doctor who
