"I can probably drive the bus back," Izumi offers.
"Yes please," Yasmina says. "My arms hurt from the stiff position that steering wheel is in."
"Will my short arms be sufficient?" Izumi jokes.
"I didn't say it," Yasmina smirks, grateful for the brief playfulness.
"Rena, how much do you think these sound boards cost?" Ben asks.
"Couple-million dollars a piece?" Rena suggests. "I didn't ask them."
Ben raises his eyebrows, taking her answer at face value.
Rena continues, "They're Airbus prototypes, made to keep birds off the runways. Bruno used to work for Airbus. He didn’t say how he acquired them. Probably better if we don't know."
"I've heard of those," Izumi remarks. "Airbus began testing them after an A350 crashed in Denmark. Each board has a bunch of subwoofers containing packs of vibrating sticks, with like forty-eight sticks per pack. They mimic a bat's echolocation. Birds don't like the sounds they make, so they stay away."
"That's a really convoluted idea," Yasmina says.
Izumi nods, "It’s expensive but less alarming than gunfire."
"That sounds like a really dumb idea," Yasmina chortles.
"Must generate a ton of 911 calls," Ben chirps.
Ben then notices a pack of similar vehicles trailing their electric bus, but he absent-mindedly dismisses them.
"Got that right," Izumi hoots. "Copenhagen paid for an accelerated version because their police were getting overwhelmed with calls."
Yasmina begins to feel nauseous, a weird, sick feeling in the pit of her stomach. She narrows her eyes and looks through the bus's rear window. She sees nothing out of the ordinary and tells herself to relax, yawning and stretching and enjoying the feeling of her back popping loudly.
"We're almost to Billings, folks," Izumi announces at 1030am.
The vehicle formation Ben had seen earlier looks slightly closer now. Ben decides to keep an eye on it, beginning to grip Rena's pistol anxiously.
As they approach, Interstate 90 expands to three lanes, with two veering left towards Interstate 94. The city looms eerily quiet, tendrils of smoke spiraling into the sky.
Suddenly, Yasmina’s instincts prickle. She sits upright, a wave of nausea confirming her unease. She again peers through the rear window, and she is greeted this time with no less than six grey Freightliner Sprinters tailing them.
Ben confirms her fear when he suddenly yells, "We have a tail!"

OH YOU BOARDED THIS SHOT???
vimeo
A clip from my T-Rex chase boards from Season 3, Episode 9 ("Whatever It Takes") of Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous. Directed by Eric Elrod with revisions by @neunhofferart.
I really tried to capture the horror and suspense of the T-rex's debut from the first Jurassic Park movie. These were my last boards before being promoted to storyboard artist ^^

How does sammy and yasmina crew get to meet each other? Is it random? Do one of them save the other or something else?
Thank you for this question! I've been thinking about it for a while and I think I finally have a coherent vision.
The first time they all officially meet face to face is while they're fighting each other. Yaz and Sammy have this rivalry going on, and at this point, the only interaction they've had is indirect, but still aimed at each other.
Sammy's crew is chasing after an enemy ship they want to take supplies from, but they notice another ship is also following them. When they see the flag, they know it's Yaz, and they prepare for her to attack their ship. But she doesn't attack them, she just sails right by them toward the enemy ship. Sammy's a little offended that Yaz isn't attacking her, so she decides that this is a race now.
Yaz is faster and boards the other ship first, but that doesn't stop Sammy from boarding anyway. Then, it becomes a fight for who gets the supplies.
Of course, Yaz and Sammy swordfight (lol), which Yaz wins because she's trained at it years before Sammy even became a pirate. But Yaz refuses to actually kill Sammy, and when Sammy asks why, she just says that she's not worth cleaning her blade. This offends Sammy even more, and she becomes determined to show Yaz that she's capable of being a threat.
Meanwhile, Ben goes after Darius because he recognizes him. The first time Sammy messed with Yaz, she got Darius to lift information about a treasure map from Ben at a tavern while he was drunk. Ben has been attempting to train Bumpy to attack on command, and he's like go bite Darius for me. Bumpy bites Darius' ankle a little, but it doesn't hurt him, and Darius ends up thinking she's more cute than intimidating. And Ben's like omg finally someone else who doesn't see her as a monster! But they still have to fight because they're on opposite sides.
Brooklynn and Kenji also fight. He's like hey I don't wanna hit a lady :(( , and she's like you'll have to if you want to live. The skill gap between them is crazy, so Brooklynn ends up getting bored and she leaves him tied to a pole.
The fight ends with Sammy's crew at a loss, and though Sammy really doesn't want to retreat, she does for the sake of her crew members.
(( Hopefully this makes sense, I tried to make it not too lengthy. I may have also left out information bc it's already canon to me in my head, so feel free to ask if u want more of my imaginary plot :]

Got any campfam aus or ideas in the works?
hey anon! I wouldn’t say I have any ideas in the works, because I have what I like to call commitment issues when it comes to writing fic.
This means that while I have an abundance of ideas, outlines, and wips in my Google docs for the fandoms I’ve been in. I’ve never actually finished a fic and posted it.
In fact, the only single time I have, (diff fandom!) I am not counting properly, because it was a collab with a close mutual, and a lot of the legwork was them. I had the initial plot bunny and was going to leave it as a one off tumblr post, but my mutual rlly liked the idea and we bounced drabbles and such back and forth. We wrote a bunch of snippets and put them together in a doc, until we had cohesive chapters, as we filled the empty spaces with more and more work, ending up to a total of 18 chapters. It took us a year and a half to post it, and that was mostly my fault, as where my mutual had finished most of their allotted sections, different hyperfixations kept pulling me to other unfinished works. This is why I won’t promise anything—I don’t want to disappoint anyone.
But, that being said. I do have ideas, hcs, and aus! One that is currently consuming me, was actually inspired by this one other post I saw recently. (When I find the post ima link it dw!) OP of the post was saying that there should be a Carmen Sandiego au for CC and I jumped on that SO fucking fast anon. I LOVE Carmen Sandiego, and have since it first aired when I was in HS.
So. Here’s some of the Carmen Sandiego au thoughts copy/pasted from my Google docs. (Yes I do always write out my outlines as if I’m taking to someone but that’s bc i sometimes end up sharing the doc link with some friends)
JWCC Carmen Sandiego AU:
Y’all know Kenlynn is my JAM and so is RedCrackle. So obvi I thought of mixing the two right? But here’s the thing. While I love Carmen/Gray, I am also in love with Carmen/Ivy and Carmen/Julia.
So with that in mind. Kenlynn is going to take a backseat for a second (meaning tho they'll become a thing and obvi they will bc they are a constant to me, theyre not the center of this), and my fave girls YASAMMY will be at the forefront of this au.
I’m thinking. Carmen Sammy. But I’m not entirely sure about whether or not that’s what I want? It could be argued that Sammy’s love for her family is a core driving force in her character, and Carmen doesn’t KNOW her family. But also—a huge plot point is that she’s looking for her mom. So. Tentative Carmen Sammy.
MANTAH CORP AS VILE MANTAH CORP AS V.I.L.E MANTAH CORP AS V.I.L.E
So I figure not everything is going to be one-to-one. This means I am placing Kenji in the role of Gray/Crackle. His story is going to be different tho, bc whereas Gray was a recruit, with MANTAH CORP AS V.I.L.E that means Daniel is already on the board. So kenji trying to make his dad proud? More likely than you think.
(I just wanted my Sammy&Kenji besties. Bestie betrayal can be just as good as romantic betrayal)
I’m sure you know where I’m going with this if we’re not going the redcrackle route. Thats right. YASMINA JULIA.
I considered at first, YASMINA CARMEN and SAMMY IVY, but in the end the need for Sammy Carmen was too great.
So I also considered Dave and Roxxie as Chase and Julia but, I decided to scrap that idea for now. You know me, at some point I might revamp most of the au anyways lol, now is not a time for fine tuning it’s just a tentative starting point.
Torn between DARIUS as Player or Brooklynn as Player. I considered Ben of course, but I think we need to put him on an island at some point—he needs a Bumpy, no matter the universe.
WAIT. REVISITING BEN AS PLAYER. BECAUSE DARIUS AND BRAND AS ZACK AND IVY. This means no Carmen/Ivy vibes but since we ditched the Gray/Carmen as well in this au I think it’s fine.
Ben still has to end up with Bumpy somehow tho? Original Ben plan, when Darius was a Player candidate, was Ben is also a V.I.L.E recruit.
V.I.L.E having a faction that deals with genetics and cloning (in addition to like. Kash and his robots) and ending up with a dinosaur—Bumpy! And that being Ben’s flip to the other side/Team Sammy. He defects and steals Bumpy on his way out.
Okay I’m a little too attached to that, so yeah. V.I.L.E recruit Ben, so Brooklynn as player??
Oh! She doesn’t have!!! IRL friends!! Brooklynn being an Internet famous vlogger as in canon. So we get that running gag of Sammy and Brooklynn always being in contact and Brooklynn being a big part of the heists through investigative work and such, yet she’s constantly on the other side of the globe? Sammy needs to be in Sydney but Brooklynn is in New Orleans. That kinda stuff.
Works with Brooklynn having traveled all over the world, she can also do those factoids player does—she’s got the deets.
Oh!???? THATS HOW WE GET MY FAVE DUO OF DINOSTAR BESTIES!!! They both love their facts. They’re nerds.
Mae as shadowsan? Tentatively?
Okay. Player Brooklynn. Except instead of being home most of the time, she’s usually on the go. She’s talked to kenji a few times during Sammy and Kenji’s V.I.L.E recruit era.
Kenji as the Gray of this au. he’s a V.I.L.E legacy. he became friends with sammy his recruitment year, and he'd talked to brooklynn a few times, due to sammy introducing them because kenji was curious about whether or not sammy has friends in the outside world, and sammy noticing brooklynn feeling a little left out/jealous that sammy had friends she was hanging with in person rather than over a phone call.
kenlynn kenlynn kenlynn
does he recognize her voice from her vlogs? does he even watch them? i dont think hed be a brooklander, guys got a lot on his plate and thats impressing his dad
ben is a V.I.L.E. recruit. maybe a bit of mime bomb, in that he was. not as close? with the other recruits. i do think having ben come in as a recruit the year sammy defects would be cool tho. so he doesn't know her as "black sheep" or whatever code name V.I.L.E refers to her as. he'll first meet her as Sammy.
yaz as JULIA!!!!! a junior agent? a former athlete. trying to make it make sense, but i think it fits.
omg. yaz. is alex rider basically holy shit
was thinking of dave as chase, and decided that i was going to keep it.
roxxie as the Chief.
mae as shadowsan.
yes. it IS because i want a roxxie/mae/dave love triangle and that need's final form was ot3
DARIUS AND BRAND AS ZACK AND IVY. i dont want their mom to be dead. but i dont know WHAT happened to her and why theyre involved in this life of crime? i love the og carmen&ivy&zack meeting. and i love that they were involved with racing. trying to find a way to incorporate it and make it make sense
important question.....is darius and his dad's great shared love still dinosaurs?
OR IS IT CARS? RACING?????? BRAND BEING INVOLVED IN THE RACES BC IT WAS IMPORTANT TO DARIUS AND THEIR DAD AND DARIUS CANT DRIVE YET
AND. SAMMY. AS CARMEN!!!!!!
okay so carmen's dad was a former V.I.L.E. agent who left it all behind for the woman he fell in love with right? well. obvi this au isnt a one to one. like there clearly have been changes in characters and dynamics. but i think involving elements from this could work. lemme map it out to make sense
okay so in cc sammy spies for mantah corp despite her parents not wanting her to. meanwhie carmen's dad defects from V.I.L.E., i think shadowsan was there and so was the chief and he dies.
okay so--sammy's dad was a V.I.L.E. agent, fell in love, defected. V.I.L.E. catches up with him, and does A.C.M.E. and in the fallout, the house collapses. A fire? an explosion? they think sammy died. (im not killing off sammy's dad bc damnit she needs a happy ending)
yaz losing faith in the system and having her hot girl summer being romanced by the pretty thief she's supposed to be catching
ben ditches VILE/Mantah Corp with Bumpy and meets Darius at some point--oh!!!
mae/shadowsan joins Team Sammy at the end of s1 i think? okay, so, when she joins, she brings ben, a fresh defector with her.
obvi ben left after he stole bumpy from them
at some point during their occasional talks, kenlynn became friendly with each other. then The Train scene happens. and kenji is promptly deemed a disappointment and dealt with the way gray is.
brooklynn ends up coming across a memory-wiped kenji during one of her vlogs. he doesnt know he knows her, just that something about her voice seems familiar.
brooklynn brings it up and the other are Concerned but also have a lot on their plate rn/dont truly trust him again or are unclear on whether or not they should. darius/brand bc their experiences havent been good so far, and sammy doesnt want to risk them. but he was still one of her first friends. shes torn
brooklynn making contact with him. smth smth she ends up needing a camera man for one of her vlogs and kenji volunteers. they grow closer during her sporadic visits. he asks her out.
DANIEL KON HAS ENTERED THE CHAT. SAMMY NEEDS BROOKLYNN TO DO HER THING. SHE MISSES THE DATE.
Meanwhile, that entire interactive ep??? of carmen sandiego with the julia/carmen??? THAT. THAT HAPPENS. YASAMMY DANCE AND WE GET THAT SCENE YOU KNOW THE ONE

The Master List (hi)
Master List:
Hi, i’m ace. I got really bored and i need an excuse to procrastinate on my personal writing projects so i decided to start an account dedicated to just writing. So like, you can request almost anything (limits below) like if you want like a platonic fic just ask! If you want the reader to be the kid or sibling of the character, i’ll do it! You can be as specific or as vague as you want, eventually i’ll get some prompts for help but for now, you gotta wing it. Also I’ll write for like any fandom even if i dont know it, i’ll try my hardest but i’d prefer if you stuck to the list below. Anyways yeah. (also pfp is nyurei on picrew)
So basic rules,
If youre an nsfw account dni, also i will not write smut regardless of age given i’m a minor
No incest
I’m currently only doing x readers, that might change in the future but for now no ocs or ships
I’d prefer if you didn’t request x reader with an actual person, (ex. Instead of asking for a Maya Hawke x reader, ask for a Robin Buckley x reader)
If you know a character’s sexuality and you dont fit, dont ask (ex. Nico is gay, I will not write Nico x fem! reader)
Please specify pronouns when requesting
Please keep in mind i’m not a professional writer
Please use common sense and dont do something that makes me have to update the rules
Anyways, so fandoms i’ll write for
It 2017/2019: Richie Tozier, Eddie Kaspbrak, Stanley Uris, Bill Denbrough, Beverly Marsh, Ben Hanscom, Mike Hanlon (specify if you want 2017 or 2019)
Percy Jackson: Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, Grover Underwood, Piper McLean, Jason Grace, Leo Valdez, Hazel Levesque, Frank Zhang, Connor Stoll, Travis Stoll, Nico Di Angelo, Will Solace
Supernatural: Dean Winchester, Sam Winchester, Castiel, Gabriel, Kevin Tran, Crowley, Charlie Bradbury, Rowena (does girly have a last name 💀), Jack Kline (platonic only)
South park (platonic only for everyone, they’re children): Kyle Broflovski, Stan Marsh, Eric Cartman, Kenny McCormick, Butters Scotch, Tolkien Black (or is it Token? I swear its always spelled different), Timmy, Craig Tucker, Tweek Tweak, Jimmy Valmer, Wendy Testaburger
Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous/Chaos Theory: Darius Bowman (i’d prefer if we kept it platonic with him but romance is ok i guess), Kenji Kon, Brooklyn, Yasmina Fadoula, Sammy Guiterrez, Ben Pincus,
Marvel: Tony Stark (platonic only, so sorry) Steve Rodger, Bucky Barnes, Natasha Romanoff, Wanda Maximoff, Peter Peter, Ned Leeds, M.J, Harley Keener, Thor Odinson, Loki Odinson, Shuri, T'Challa, Okoye
The Owl House: Luz Noceda, Willow Park, Amity Blight, Edric Blight, Emira Blight, Gus Porter, Eda Clawthorne, Lilith Clawthorn, Hooty (platonic preferred, but if you freaky like that go ahead and ask for romance, see what happens), Raine Whispers
The Umbrella Academy: Luther, Diego, Alison, Klaus, Five (would he date a kid or an adult cause-), Ben (he can be alive or yall could be ghosts), Vanya
Dear Evan Hansen: Connor Murphy (my beloved), Evan Hansen, Jared Kleinman, Zoe Murphy, Alana Beck

Could you do yasammy where Yasmina has a nightmare of being back on the island and Sammy calms her down.
If you don't feel comfortable with writing it I understand
Oooo I love these types of prompts! BTW they're aged up, like 22 ish.
Running. Her legs wanted to give out, her ankle was throbbing in pain.
Roaring. A giant beast a few feet behind her.
She was alone, all alone in the darkness as she ran. She knew where she was, but everything felt different. The trees parted slightly, and she ran through the opening, hoping to get somewhere safe.
Instead, she found herself at the edge of a cliff, with nowhere to go.
The Scorpious Rex marched closer, opening it's terrifying jaws. Closer, letting out an ear-piercing screech. Closer, ready to attack.
Yaz shoots up in her bed. It was just a nightmare. She's alright, she's fine, she's safe.
She turns to her side, hoping to find reassurance in her girlfriend, but instead, she finds an empty space beside her.
"Sammy?" She asks cautiously, trying not to think of the worst-case scenario. But she can't help it, she's already panicking. "Sammy?!" Yaz jumps out of the bed, almost getting tangled in the covers, and starts rushing downstairs.
"Woah, Yaz, what's wrong?" Sammy looks up at her from the bottom of the steps, a mug in one hand and a pop tart in the other.
Yasmina practically jumps down the stairs and envelopes Sammy in a hug. "Sorry, I... I just had a nightmare."
Sammy looks at her with a gentle expression before leading her to the couch. "What happened?"
"I was back... on the island... and the scorpious was chasing me. And you weren't there, and I couldn't get somewhere safe. I woke up right before..." Yaz was trying not to cry. She hates crying, especially over her nightmares.
Sammy hugs her tightly and strokes her hair as Yaz cries into her shoulder. "It's okay, I'm here, and I'm never letting anything bad happen to you. We're safe now, Yaz, we're safe."
They sit like that for a long time before Yasmina eventually falls asleep in Sammy's warm embrace. Sammy looks down at her girlfriend in her arms and sighs contently before pulling a blanket over them and falling asleep, too.

TwstOber 2023 Day 4 - Chase
Here is the TwstOber 2023 prompt by @raven-at-the-writing-desk: TwstOber2023
---
“Get back here!”
Yasmina looked up from her homework to watch an amusing sight: Grim, seemingly carrying a bun in his mouth, running away from a very pissed-off Ace, followed by a concerned looking Deuce and Dove behind him. She watched them run through the courtyard from the safety of the balcony. This would be concerning if this wasn’t an almost every day occurrence.
Somehow those four would always find themselves in trouble. It wasn’t always chases (even though they had a fifty percent chance they would end that way); their antics would range from fighting over a small thing to bringing their other freshmen into their shenanigans to running from the Headmaster. One time, they got into trouble because Ace and Grim got into it and caused a food fight in the food court. They, along with the first-years and anyone who participated, had to do cleaning shifts for an entire week.
Sighing, she goes back to her homework as the multiple shrieks from Grim, cursing from Ace, and Dove’s pleas for this to stop faded to white noise.

On Gbenga Akinnagbe’s Luncheon Talk
By Sophia Spears
On Monday January 22nd, I joined a handful of students to have a conversation with actor, writer, and producer, Gbenga Akinnagbe. The room was lightly humming with conversation before Dustyn Martincich, from the Theatre Department, prompted Gbenga with the question: “Tell us about your undergraduate experience at Bucknell.” His face lit up, and he smiled from ear to ear. “I was not supposed to be here,” was how he began.
Gbenga started wrestling during his junior year of high school, and thought it was a fluke that Bucknell offered him a position on their varsity wrestling team. No one at home had expected him to stay at Bucknell, but he eventually graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science. Shockingly, Gbenga was not involved in theater before or during his time in college. He did not take an acting class or participate in any school production. In fact, his first job outside of college was working for the Federal government!
So how did he get into acting? Well, one day a colleague invited him to go see a play. Gbenga asked, out of curiosity, “how does a person become an actor?” To which his colleague replied with a scoff, saying that Gbenga was not capable of doing such a career. This ignited his competitive nature. Taking it as a challenge, he auditioned for a community theater in DC. After landing a role, and performing in front of an audience for the first time, he was hooked.
He did not use his lack of acting experience as an excuse not to try. Instead, he overcame adversity by asking questions, seeking help, and following the advice of fellow actors. This included constantly reading plays, taking every opportunity to see live theater, and enrolling himself in acting classes. Everyday he “put himself out there,” by auditioning for everything that came his way. Little did he know that he was arming himself with the tools he needed to succeed in the industry.
Today, Gbenga’s career spans over 20 years. He has been cast in two HBO series, The Wire and The Deuce and continues to perform in and write for various theater productions. When he ended his story and as students asked him a million questions, my key takeaway was this: What you study as an undergraduate does not determine your occupational fate. The world is open, so long as you are brave enough to be curious and say yes to opportunities. Additionally, despite his accolades, Gbenga was never chasing awards and fame. Instead, he strived for his own definition of success, which is to always do good work. First, work with integrity and do your best; then, the rest will follow.
As a senior in the class of ’24, I often worry about my future outside of Bucknell. I sometimes ask myself: “Did I choose the right major? Did I do enough with my time here? Am I prepared for the ‘real’ world?” Gbenga’s story is about a student who was simply figuring it out, one day at a time. There was no way he could have predicted where his life would go. And now, he feels he is successful and in a good place. Overall, I was inspired, uplifted and comforted. I am so grateful to have heard his story, and I am so excited to see what comes next.
T. Patrick Halley: “Make A Big Choice.”
By: Abby Campion
T. Patrick Halley, or T. Pat to his friends at Bucknell, is a New-York based actor and Bucknell grad. Having been apart of two professional productions of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Patrick was thrilled to hear of Bucknell Theatre’s upcoming Spelling Bee auditions, growing eager to offer advice to the theatre students at his alma mater. In addition to Spelling Bee, Patrick has also been seen in several other Off-Broadway productions including In Love and Warcraft, Good People, The Taming of The Shrew, and The Bomb-Itty of Errors.
On Saturday, January 20th, Bucknell students had the privilege of zooming in with Patrick as he shared his best tips on auditioning in the industry, with an added emphasis on auditioning for Spelling Bee. Patrick’s vast knowledge of the realm of musical theatre and beyond shone through during his deep-dive into “unpacking the text.” He placed an added importance on knowing “who you’re talking to,” and fully understanding that “you belong in the room.” When discussing how to approach Spelling Bee, our biggest takeaway from Patrick was to “make a big choice.” When it comes to Spelling Bee, a whacky musical comedy featuring an eclectic group of sixth-graders, everything goes. There are no structural barriers for portraying zany ten-year-olds, and Patrick made sure to strongly convey this.
Patrick’s kindness and wisdom was further exemplified in the 20-minute individualized sessions that he offered to students as a chance to hone their craft. Whether students went in with their chosen monologue/song for their Spelling Bee audition or simply to receive general feedback, there was a sweeping consensus about Patrick. He was attentive, patient, kind, and tremendously helpful. First-year student Gabriella Cappelloni raved about Patrick, saying that he truly made her feel comfortable about her craft. “He gave me great constructive criticism . . . I truly saw my pieces grow in the thirty minutes that I spent with him.” Further commenting on Patrick’s teachings, Gabriella emphasized how Patrick had a “great balance of relating to students as he was a student himself, while also giving his professional experience working in the industry.” Gabriella will be performing as Logainne “Schwartzy” in Spelling Bee.
I, myself, was able to secure a slot, and I went in with my monologue. After asking me to perform it an initial time, Patrick and I had a conversation about who it was I was talking to. He also directed me to more opportunities within the monologue for physical comedy, and recommended that I expand on my characterization. He challenged me to look beyond the scope of what I had practiced, and, of course, “make a big choice.” I learned from Patrick that there’s an infinite amount of space for creativity, and so, we should use it.
Patrick’s guidance and genuine desire to see us succeed was evident in his Audition Workshop. We hope Patrick will return to Bucknell for a day and watch our production of Spelling Bee. Amidst his workshop, Patrick spoke fondly of his Bucknell theatre days, reminiscing about learning monologue tips from Bob Gainer and recalling his memories in Harvey. See The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee April 12-15 in the Harvey Powers Theatre.
KCACTF Finalist Kieran Calderwood:
More Than a Contest
By Kieran Calderwood
At noon last Wednesday, I arrived in Pittsburgh with members of the Bucknell theater department for the KCAC theater festival. That night we all watched a festival play, at the end of which the semifinalists for the Irene Ryan acting competition would be announced.
Applause rang out through the auditorium for the play’s cast. Then a theater professor named Matt Rifa, who had a luxuriant beard, walked onstage. First he told us that one hundred and ninety-eight students had submitted monologues to the first round, and that only thirty-two of them would make it to the next round. (I competed last year and hadn’t made it to the next round, so I wasn't expecting anything.) He then read the semi finalists' names aloud to the anxious theater. When each name was called, a small explosion of excitement went off around the theater full of competitors and their friends. It was sweet. I thought to myself, Man, I wish my name was called. That would be wild. Then, to my shock, after about twenty-five names, Professor Rifa said “Kieran Calderwood.” Almost immediately my classmates were yelling and slapping my back—I was experiencing one of those explosions first-hand, and it was awesome. I was frozen in shock and excitement and soon, for another reason. As the last few names were announced, I realized that I would have a lot of work to do the next day. Rather than attend workshops with my friends, I was going to have to compete. The next day, the semifinalists had to present a monologue and a scene with a partner from their school.
When I got back to our hotel that night, my scene partner Paige and I ran our scene over and over while our wonderful professor, Anjalee Hutchinson, gave us feedback. After about an hour, around midnight, we decided that the scene was ready to present.
Nevertheless, before the competition the next day, I was very nervous. My armpits were sweating, and there was a lump in my throat. I’m not a theatre major. I hadn’t acted in front of an audience in seven months. Now I was supposed to compete in front of judges and a room full of great actors? Doubt was creeping in, and as I went onstage to introduce myself before performing, I fell apart. “Hi, my name is Kieran Calderwood and this is my wonderful scene partner, Paige Gilmartin. Today I’ll be performing a monologue from…” What was the name? “Uhh…” You look stupid. Say the name! “...from, frickin’...I’m sorry. I’m really nervous.” Then Paige, standing next to me, whispered “Fat Pig.” Fortunately that wasn’t an insult, but rather the name of the Neil LaBute play that my monologue was from. Paige’s help snapped me back into focus. I finished the introduction, took a breath, and began the monologue I had read hundreds of times.
Three minutes later, Paige and I had finished our scene, and we were walking out of the theater to the sound of applause. We did it. Kind of. The slate was bad, but they weren’t supposed to judge the slate. It was a toss-up, but I felt good about my performance, really good.
Fast-forward to that night: I was sitting in a room with the other competitors. Anjalee and a few students from Bucknell were with me, waiting to hear the finalists’ names announced. As names were read, I slowly accepted that there were a lot of very good actors here and—“Kieran Calderwood.” HUH? I turned to Anjalee and saw that she had a smile that matched mine. All of a sudden, I was getting hugs from my friends and laughing semi-hysterically. Paige came over to me and said, “Looks like we’ve gotta do that again. Go practice your slate.”
Looks like I’ve got another two busy days. The finals were on Saturday, which gave me and Paige Friday to work on our scene. The finals had the addition of another monologue. I would have to present a monologue from Electra, a monologue from Fat Pig, and a scene with Paige from As You Like It. I would have six minutes to perform all three back-to-back.
I workshopped the Electra monologue for hours on Friday, aiming to give vulnerability to Orestes, the Greek hero. I found beats within the scene, as many beats as I could. I changed the blocking from static kneeling the entire time to continuous movement. Once it was ready, I went to bed.
I went to the gym before my Saturday performance to help calm my nerves and blow off some energy. It helped. I was barely able to eat afterward—my stomach felt sick. The nerves were coming back. As I sat in a stairwell backstage alongside Paige and the other waiting competitors, I felt the lump in my throat return. But then, finally, I was hit by a bigger perspective. This is theatre, man. You’re performing a PLAY. You should be excited. You’ve got nothing to lose. You’re ready. Have fun with it!
These thoughts, along with encouragement from Paige, brought me out of my head. I loosened up a bit. I woke up. As I was about to go onstage, I realized my shoe was untied. Normally I don’t put effort into the tying of my shoes. But in that moment, I got on one knee and tied my shoe well, confidently. I switched knees and re-tied the other shoe, which had also been poorly tied. I walked out onstage with my well-tied shoes and with purpose.
The slate went well. The monologues flowed. The scene was great. I walked off to more applause than in the semifinals. I gave Paige a big hug offstage and sat down with a realization that meant more than any contest or judge could mean: That was the best acting I’ve ever done.
Awards, Events, & Bucknell Rep at KCACTF
By: Joselyn Busato
This past week, several students in the Bucknell Theatre Department attended the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Here, the students competed in acting, playwriting, and directing competitions; attended workshops led by professionals; performed in staged one-act and ten-minute plays; and were given the opportunity to watch performances by neighboring colleges. Several Bucknellians had notable achievements at this year’s festival, with two bringing home awards.
Four students were nominated by Kennedy Center respondents to compete in the Irene Ryans Acting Competition (Reid Fournier ’24, Kieran Calderwood ’24, Tseday Robinson ’24, and Madison Buckley ’24), and Zoe Kemp ’24 self-nominated with the support of acting program faculty advisor Anjalee Hutchinson. Students had to prepare two monologues and a scene with a partner to showcase their skills for judges. Of these five, Kieran Calderwood advanced to the semifinal and final rounds, alongside his scene partner Paige Gilmartin (’26). Kieran is the first to have advanced to the final round from Bucknell in many years. Two students participated in the Musical Theatre Intensive Competition, in which they sent self-tapes performing an excerpt of a musical theatre song. These students were Harper Dick (’25) and Jaela Rivera (’27). Two other students participated in the directing competition (Ariel Urich ’25 and Caroline Pritchard ’26). These students were given the challenge of casting and directing 10-minute or one-act plays written by students. These plays were performed as staged readings at a showcase. Two Bucknell students, Maya Gurung (’26) and Tseday Robinson (’24) were cast and performed in these staged readings. Maya Gurung went on to receive an award for her performance in a one-act play, highlighting her chemistry with her fellow cast members. One of the plays performed was submitted by a Bucknell student, Joselyn Busato (’24). Her 10-minute play “Cytokinesis” was selected to be performed at the festival and then was chosen as one of two regional finalists for the Region 2 festival. Joselyn’s play has the chance to be selected among other finalists across the country to move on to the national competition at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. The first and second place recipients moving on to the national conference will be announced in March.
While the students representing Bucknell were involved in many different facets of the conference, they all could agree on how enjoyable it was immersing themselves in the world of theatre, as well as cheering on their peers in their accomplishments.
The Joy of Arts Merit Weekend
By: Zoe Fleury
Arts Merit Weekend is the reason I’m at Bucknell. It was February of last year and I had no idea where I was going to go to college. I had just gotten rejected from my early decision and stupidly didn’t have a plan after that. I came to Bucknell for a tour in January and loved it but wasn’t completely sure. Luckily, my tour guide was Alice Jackins, who is extremely involved in theatre at Bucknell. She told me I should sign up for Arts Merit Weekend and after a few emails, I was on the list.
Arts Merit Weekend consists of a welcome ceremony, an audition, and a closing. The purpose of it is to audition for the opportunity to be an Arts Merit Scholar here at Bucknell. What I didn’t know was that it would be so much more than an audition. I was so nervous going into it, but looking back, all my fears were unfounded. I arrived and instantly, a bunch of people greeted me and started talking to me, they all seemed so happy to be there. My group (the theatre and dance auditionees) went to Harvey Powers Theater for pizza. There was this crazy man in a kilt named Hutch serving everyone and trying to learn everyone’s names while the current Merit Scholars mingled with us high-schoolers. I went up to get some pizza and Hutch asked for my name. I told him it was Zoe and he yelled “FLEURY!!!” I couldn’t believe he remembered my last name from our emails, and I felt really special and disarmed at that moment.
I learned so much in that short hour and a half, both about Bucknell and about what I wanted. The people I met were so warm and kind to me. They really seemed like they wanted me there. The next day was audition day, and I was scared shitless. To be completely frank, I don’t remember much about the audition itself but rather waiting in the Black Box Theater in Tustin for my turn. There were two auditionees other than myself and some current merits waited with us while the others went.
I had never had so much fun right before an audition. Just chatting with these amazing people, exchanging stories and laughs, is how I knew this was the place for me. Looking back, it’s crazy to me that those people waiting with me would become my friends, and the crazy man in the kilt one of my greatest mentors. Being a merit at Bucknell, I’ve been in two shows, both the quintessential First Year Show and the fall mainstage Men on Boats. I’ve also had the opportunity to do an audition workshop with Bucknell alum, Patrick Henry, who taught me incredible strategies. Arts Merit Weekend shaped my entire college application experience, and being a merit at Bucknell is the best outcome I could’ve asked for.
Congratulations to Bucknell Theatre’s Professor Bryan Vandevender for receiving tenure!

You Know Nothing
In “You Know Nothing” by Yasmina DIm Madden, the mother is a round character. You see a wide range of emotions from her. Anger and frustration seems to be the main emotions that she portrays. It starts with her chasing her daughter around, and screams at her. When she doesn’t get the reaction she wants out of her daughter, she goes into the kitchen and pulls out a knife. Her daughter calls her a lunatic and then explains why her actions make her mother so crazy. Her mother is looking for a reaction that she refuses to give, she doesn’t let her mother get the satisfaction of getting to her. When her mother pulls out the knife her daughter remembers that her mother is the only person who has ever cried for her. Showing more of a range in her mother’s emotions, from anger to empathy. In the mother’s pov it shows her describing what she was doing as “running after her like a crazy chicken with its head off.” Also in the mothers pov it has her remembering what it was like to raise her daughter, and the emotions she felt. “I always afraid when she little. I was so young with Elyse and back then I cry with her.” She remembers how her daughter never seemed to cry, unless it was really bad, so she would cry with her. Later in her other daughter’s pov, the one watching the interaction, it has a will she won’t she about if she will throw the knife at her daughter. Her other daughter knows that there is an equal chance of her throwing it, she even goes as far to say that her mother seems crazy. In every single pov there is someone describing her or her actions as crazy, she even says so herself.

@belladxne alright so first off we're gonna ignore the fact that it's taken me nearly four months to come up with a proper response to this. second off I AM SO GLAD YOU ASKED! to answer your question, i wanna take a look at S3E01, "view from the top."
this episode juggles a few different subplots (sammy and kenji growing closer as friends, brooklynn and yasmina beefing it out and eventually learning how to work together), but, as expected, the one we’re going to focus on is that between ben and darius. when darius notices that something’s bothering ben, he makes it his responsibility to figure out what that thing is, in typical packleader fashion. now, we as the audience understand that darius only has the purest of intentions in this episode, but ben … he has a harder time believing this, and it's no fault of darius’s.
keep in mind that even though they've been reunited for approximately five months at this point, ben still hasn't completely reintegrated into the group yet. one month might not be a long time under normal circumstances, but in a survival situation like theirs, it had given the campers ample time to form their own little network of unique relationships and dynamics. ben just ... wasn't there for that. he was out in the jungle, alone. and what did he learn while he was out on his own, unknowing of when he–if–he would ever get off the island? that he's the only person (keyword being person) he can rely on, that he can trust—a sentiment he had already voiced when things only just started going downhill, before the monorail incident. so when darius finally cuts to the chase, asks ben how he’s been doing …
… yeah, it’s no surprise that ben immediately goes on the offensive. not only does he get angry, but he also accuses darius of colluding with kenji to pull out the rug from under him—not because darius gave him any good reason to suspect as much, but because darius hasn't given him a good reason to believe otherwise. guilty until proven innocent, basically. it's not fair, it's not rational, but i don’t think anyone could expect anything else from ben considering the things he’s gone through. and darius can't erase that—neither his trauma nor the person ben's become because of it (or at least in part).
what darius can do, however, is extend a helping hand. hope ben meets him halfway. ask him to put his trust in him; trust that darius won’t judge him, that he won’t hurt him more than he already has been. that's what i mean by implicitly.
does ben like this? no. it goes against every single one of his baseline instincts. but he still does it, eventually. with great caution, sure, but it’s more than what he’s willing to do for—further than where he’s willing to go with—the other campers. and that is exactly why darius’s trust is so valuable to ben: because ben putting his trust in darius is possibly the biggest compromise darius could have asked of him, and yet ben still does it anyway. it's only natural he'd want it in return.
man. ben asking darius why he won't trust him during their big fight in "a shock to the system" just hits different when you realize that ben's trust is all darius has actually asked of him up until that point (explicitly and implicitly), and although he's expressed hesitation and doubt, ben's ultimately relinquished it to darius each and every time. so when darius can't seem to return it—that trust, the thing that ben's always been wary of giving out—it hurts, and you can see it in his face, hear it in his voice. it isn't just that darius has disrespected him by undermining him & his autonomy; it's that, in ben's eyes, darius is violating everything their relationship has been built upon: trust.
#i made these gifs around the time i first got this comment so they're a little crunchy. BUT IDC!#mango commentary#benrius#darius bowman#ben fitzgerald pincus#ben & darius#meta

JWCT SEASON TWO SPOILER WARNING
❤️
🧡
💛
💚
💙
💜
We see a side of Brooklynn we've never seen. Her trauma is deep, and as one of the two campers to be actually injured directly by a dinosaur, we see her motivation. She's always been a sleuth, she can't help it. But her will to keep going, and the lengths she goes to protect her friends, has fundamentally changed her.
We also now know the Allosaurus (I named her Allison) didn't eat Brooklynn's hand ... it was Red (the Atrociraptor). We as the audience and the rest of the Nublar Six blamed Allison for that, with Darius chasing her through California with his truck, when she may have been mostly innocent the whole time.
This entire show has excellent representation with Brooklynn actually acknowledging Africa as a continent instead of a country; Zayna and her mother, and Soyona speaking Arabic when she first appears. I am IN LOVE with JWCT Season Two, and for the first time, it ain't because of Yasmina and Sammy.
Speaking of which, Sammy is terrifying in that episode, when she tries to force Ben and Zayna to return to her uncle's shop to get Yasmina. I have never seen Sammy actually angry. I literally gasped when she appeared with her creased eyebrows. It was a great moment and it actually slightly triggered me ... tall women standing above me while enraged is something I have a lot of childhood trauma from.
I know Sammy's a big mama's bear, and I love her, so her reaction there is completely justifiable. But imagine how Zayna feels right there.
And lastly, while I like Yasmina's solo episode, that Dubai apartment sequence was my favorite in the whole show. The dynamic between Soyona and Brooklynn is impeccable, where we see Soyona at her purest and Brooklynn at her most traumatized. Plus, and I'm calling it right now, I kinda think they might ... hook up.
The animations in this season was much better as well, with the rain and the water and the dinosaurs so detailed and high-quality.
We need this story to continue.

My take of "The What-Ifs, Season 2 Version"
The Brooklynn Reveals
What-If 1.) Darius alone met Brooklynn
Darius was separated from Sammy, Yasmina, and Zayna when Red is chasing Capt.Lang. Red Spotted Darius and goes after him, Darius lost Red by hiding in a room, unbeknownst to him he got inside the control room, Darius turns around to see someone who thought died months ago, yet, Brooklynn is standing right before him. Brooklynn manage to save Yasmina, Sammy, and Zayna from White (Let's call that Eyeless Baryonyx for now) she gets up and was about to aproch the door when Darius barged inside. Both of them took a moment to process when they realized they're have some serious talk between them.
What-If 2.) What if Ben told the others about Brooklynn. Ben had 5 chances to do this.
2.1) In the Lifeboat: He could've told them, but they would think he's hallucinating
2.2) When he got back at Episode 2: He showed what he saw earlier at the phone at them. (This can be connected to 2.1 or not)
2.3) If he accidentally slip up:
A:) During the boat Ride: Ben grew furstrated on making conntact with Brooklynn and blurt out she's alive.
B:) After the Hippo attack: Ben is deperate to get the phone back while the others who're trying to calm him down. Ben shouted he needs to know what is Brooklynn duing.
2.4) When Ben have a Panic Attack: Despite Brooklynn's warnings. Ben fails to composed himself and falls into a full-blown panic attack, aftewards Ben tells them about Brooklynn's last call, knowing he broke his promis to her.
2.5) Yasmina's Counselling Session: When Yasmina tries to have Ben open up his trobles, Ben tells her about knowing Brooklynn alive. Ben and Yas had a 1on1 talk.
What-If 3.) Darius found out Brooklynn Staying at Ronie's:
3.1) Ronie called Darius about something important, yet classified. Darius got to Ronie's house and Darius found Brooklynn there. (Some time Before/After she woke up.)
3.2) Darius finds out: Darius wants to check Gordon (Injured Compy) and he has a spare key to Ronie's, he went inside and founds out two things, first is that Ronie isn't home, and second he saw Brooklynn. Cue a lot of explaining and conspiracies full of angst and comfort.
What-If. 4.) Brooklynn stayed for a moment when she brought the Container down.
That scene when Brooklynn looked up on the container holding Darius, Sammy, Yasmina and Zayna&Geba. She brought the container down, instead of going away after, she stayed and met them. Featuring Sammy' cries and bear hugs, mother Yaz lectures her child, an Awkward tension between B & D, Zayna is confused, And Geba is Geba. Afterwards they formed a plan (of somekind, idk) met up with Ben and Kenji and tries to stop Soyona.
What-If 5.) Brooklynn choose her friends instead of joining Soyona on the plane.
There's already one fanfic on Ao3. But as the Watcher said "Every Universe is a Different Possibility."
