Industry 3x01 "Il Mattino ha L'Oro in Boca"

I was going to rant about how Season 3 of Industry wasn't Industrying for me. I was going to bitch about the infamous "Season 3 Slump" some shows tend to suffer from. I was going to compare it to The Bear and complain that just like I hadn't gotten enough of Sydney Adamu in S3, I wasn't getting enough of Harper Stern in S3.

I was going to ask if Harper was being phased out in favor of Yasmin and Robert, and I was going to point out that as fond as I am both of those characters, neither one is "enough" to lead this show alongside Eric the way Harper is.

I was also going to call Kit Harington's casting publicity casting and point out that anybody could've been played Henry Muck, because I don't feel like Kit did anything special acting wise.

I was going to do all of that and then...last night's episode dropped.

Y'ALL. Since the end of S2 I've been waiting for Harper to rain fire and blood on PierPoint. I wanted to see how she'd do it and how long she'd draw out the pain and agony. When she started the fund with Petra and became a client of Pierpoint's (and demanded first class service from Eric), I was like, "That's cute and all...but it's not fire and blood."

And then seeing her scheme with Kenny, Daria and the Scottish brunette whose name I can never remember, my jaw fell on the floor. I started screaming, "There's my Harper! THERE'S my fucking Harper Stern." And watching Eric blow up....

Speaking of Eric, I had no complaints about him this season. Both Ken Leung and the writers did some excellent work; I just felt I needed to see more interactions with Harper (I've dubbed their father/daughter ship Harpsichord). But depriving us worked, because he's been avoiding her all season when she clearly wants his attention, and when he finally confronted her in her office, it was AMAZING! I was soooooo happy when he finally addressed the daddy elephant in the room and she finally pointed out her "monstrous" tendencies stem from him, and PierPoint by and large. Because when we first met Harper, she was too afraid to even pick up the phone.

Eric dragged her kicking and screaming from her shell, tutored her, molded her, and taught her the art of betrayal. He made her a monster and now he's mad...that she's a monster?

And after that, Yasmin's storyline FINALLY paid off, and it was eye-opening.

You have to understand something about me; I'm asexual, so I miss a lot of cues and when it comes to sex on TV, I typically fast forward through that shit because I don't care. I don't think it contributes to the story but this time, it actually did. I now understand why Yasmin feels the impulse to get sexually involved with damn near everybody. Since S1, I found it annoying and thought it was just some dumb thing the writers were throwing in (because so many shows do that shit), but this time, it had an actual point. Yasmin's father weaponized his wealth and status so he could fuck anything with a pulse, so is it any surprise she learned to do the same?

In fact, I think the only reason she blew up at Eric at the restaurant was that she didn't find him attractive. If she did, they would've ended up in that bathroom together. Because wealth and status (and pale skin privilege) taught Yasmin that she can behave in this manner with no consequences (Harper obviously cannot).

Which brings us to the seasonal Harper/Yasmin confrontation. A part of me wants them to be friends, another part a couple, and yet another part thinks they need to permanently split up. Such is the reality of life, and a testament to the writers. Yeah, yeah...Harper's a "monster", but I don't think Yasmin is a "talentless and useless and a fucking whore." Yasmin speaks seven languages, is a deft manipulator, and simply needs to learn that screwing your coworkers, clients, and boss is unprofessional and extremely tacky.

And Harper, honey, sweetie, boo...let that man go. Your little crush should've wrapped up in S1 the minute he chose the spicy white girl who treats him like dirt. I get that Robert's an adorable sweetheart and all, but you're not his preference and you need to get over him. Matter of fact, you've been making bank for a while now - why are you still living with these people?

This is the one part of the story that really works my nerve, but I can't really criticize it because it's real. Harper likes Robert; he's a good guy she has to see everyday at both work and home. The part of her that feels both inferior AND superior to Yasmin desperately wants to "win" him from the spicy white girl who treats him like dirt. That's real. It's as annoying as Yasmin's ill-advised sexcapades, but they're young, insecure women in a cutthroat world, and it's real.

Yas doesn't seem to give two craps about them and never hangs out with them outside the lunchroom scenes, but they were clearly popular enough to earn spots at the cool kids' table. I always wondered if they were jealous of Yasmine's blatant favoritism toward Moon (and possibly also Sam).)

The morning after Yasmine’s 15th birthday she comes to in their hotel bed. Her best friend’s still asleep, hair a rumpled mess.

Moon slides out, stumbling to the mirror. She slept in Yasmine’s t-shirt, haphazardly pulled on after they did things on that canapé that’d make the concierge blush.

It’s a strange image. A snapshot of a comfy, domestic future too simple to be in the cards.

I see you eye-fucking her. Harper Moreno’s taunt crawls back. Waste of time. You think you’re Yasmine’s favorite now, but it won’t last.

What did you think of Industry? Would you recommend it?

It's Succession for Gen Zs. I think the people who would like it would really like it, and I could probably go in depth about particular characters and particular dynamics with anons who want to discuss them and I could probably talk a lot about the reddit/fandom hatred/love for Harper but I find it all kind of pointless, I ended up finishing seasons 1 and 2 basically going, okay...? and season 3 so far just had me like, *shrug* sure. I think it's kind of a mess because I find the ideas more interesting than the execution of them. There are threads of things that I think are interesting, particularly in season 2, like the difference between newer and older generations in the workplace (gen z/milennial/gen x/boomer), the microaggressions Harper faces at work, the office intrigue and the ways in which toxic environments can be perpetuated but I find the actual characters to be quite dull except for Rishi because he's hilarious and doesn't have much screentime to get boring and Eric because Ken Leung quietly dominates the screen whenever he's on it but Harper, Yasmin, Rob -- especially Rob -- none of their personal lives or personal drama interested me, none of their personalities interested me and that's the greatest sin of the show for me. Have unlikable characters all day everyday but make them interesting. And I just don't think they are. But the people who love the show would obviously disagree so idk.

001. harper & bill —omg nurse x gangster? maybe he goes to her whenever he gets hurt in a shoot out or something? maybe he hit on her at the hospital or at a cafe/bar and things got a bit ~flirty and numbers were exchanged? and then he showed up on her doorstep one night bc he obviously can't go back to the er, they'll call the cops since the lobos and the cucuys were all over the news! knowing bill, he takes advantage of her kindness, but i think they'd eventually bond over their fundamentalist backgrounds since she grew up in a ruby ridge sort of scenario and he was raised mormon so they'd have some commonality there 002. taemin & nadine — struggling business owner and a realtor walk into a bar one night... lol actually i could see something like nadine trying to sell the restaurant out from under him (lol real estate is a cutthroat industry!!) bc it's in an up-and-coming area or something real estate-y, idk. i foresee lots of bickering! and slowly growing to understand each other. plus like... his sandwiches are really good so? who can blame her for coming around so often. 003. yasmin & mary esther — um obviously these girls get high together? mary esther is an Official Party Girl™ and yaz is a stoner drummer so they would def run into each other at house parties and such. the problem is that mary is a total asshole and lowkey has a drug problem, so oops maybe there's something a little toxic abt them? because i see yaz = peacemarker and mary esther = manipulator so idk! just a thought! there could also be some horror-y elements if perhaps they got really high one night and then oops! dead body in the room. 004. raine & zach — hmm the hotel manager and the actor! i'm sensing that maybe zach came into town because he's filming a hallmark movie or something of that ilk? and the only hotel in town is, of course, raine's charming little inn! since there probably isn't much to do when he isn't filming, he spends a lot of time in the lobby bothering raine lol and maybe bonds with her son over, like, indie movies or tv shows! they get closer and closer but then he has to leave bc the movie has finished filming and it's time to go back home to los angeles :( 005. rosalie & benny — this one is a bit of a toughie bc benny is a homebody that would probably never go to the ocean/beach bc he would never want to take his clothes off and i doubt she would ever need to be in akron, ohio BUT i do have a verse where he moves in with his sister so she can lowkey take care of him after his previous location is leaked to the press and he's harassed again, so maybe the katzer sibs relocate to a town that just happens to be where rosalie is from/living at and yearning for community again, benny goes to shul one day and whaddya know! rosalie is there too. maybe she instantly clocks him as benny katzer—infamous final boy—or just recognizes that he's a very lonely man.
