Big World
Tumblr media
Movies watched in 2025
Big World (2024, China)
Director: Lina Yang
Writer: You Xiaoying
Mini-review:
This is a hard movie to review. On the one hand, I can tell it's very well-intentioned in its portrayal of living with a disability in China, bringing to light truly important social issues. On the other hand, that doesn't change the fact that sometimes it leans towards a condescending and even pitying tone. And there's also the whole thing about casting an able-bodied actor for the lead role, a detail that will be even more divisive. It makes the representation weaker, but if you look at it from a technical point of view, Jackson Yee's performance is nothing short of outstanding. I already considered him the best actor of his generation, and his work on this film cements that. At the end of the day, I wouldn't say Big World is harmful or anything remotely like that, but its efforts don't mean there's not better representation out there.

ep 4!
general thoughts:
i switched over to youku to watch and the subs are 100% machine generated i hate it hereeee
i need them to put names in the subtitles and NOT TRANSLATE THEM youku rdgaf 😭
there's way too much yuehua on this show and it's fucking up the vibes. literally 12/63, 10 of whom already debuted, plus 2/5 mentors. it's so unfortunate. and they didn't even have the decency to put them in one audition group nooo they were split across like 4 diff auditions and they kinda pretend not to know eachother (except when they dont) which is......
there are too many "known" trainees & idols. as someone who's coming into the show only familiar with one trainee (ollie) by name, the disconnect between what we see and the votes is too much.
the ways in which the voting has been restricted is so alienating, wdym i have to check multiple apps & rely on more connected fans to figure out what the rankings *might* be 🙄
RAIN IS SOOOOO ANNOYING LEAVE WANG KUN ALONE!!!! he gives good feedback tbh but how come when it comes to freshly 18 year old wang kun allhis comments are just "daddy 😏" when he's clearly super uncomfortable???? some of the nuance could be lost in translation but so many ppl r calling him out for being weird so
i need more cheng xiao & more zhengting, they have the potential to hard carry the mentor team but rain won't shut uppppp
performances:
no performance really struck me so i can't really rank them. but Team Tan Yitian's Phantom & Team Gemini's Lydia stood out as being the most "complete."
Notes i took while watching:
phantom - aihe's team: aihe & hugo (& ansel) ate, idc what anyone says. hugo was already on my notice list but now he's def top 9. noticed: hugo - wong singcheuk (apex, 03) & ansel - a xinran (trainee 18, 00). hyungseo face, great vocals. very stupid response to the judges hype's over
phantom - tan yitian's team: not mad they won but the operatic/dramatic vibe aihe's team went with was smart. this was more straight forward. tan yitian (skye, enone) & liang shiyu (boyhood) stood out but not enough to be picks.
one and only - zhong junyi's team: unremarkable but i also don't like the song much. its dumb that they were fighting over a nonexistent dance break. zhong junyi (one) was the most noticeable, and wu xuanye (aiden) was the only one who looked happy.
one and only - muqing's team: lui & tomoki were cute. service forgot his main rap part. walker (wang kun) is very 143 ent coded (puppy face). wang muqing (boyhood) is popular but he looks too much like xinxi & yitian for me to have them all as picks. like where's the diversity idk. huang xin (eliott) was endearing in a funny way.
lydia - archie's team: honestly didn't notice kingsley (yang yichen) much here but he won yay. honda hiromu & my foreigner bias i was endeared by him + archie teaching him the lyrics
lydia - gemini's team: overall more complete stage. not sure how gemini won but im very happy about it. everyone on this team was good but my picks would be gemini, wong yikbun (hugo) & sun jingdong (ddmorecash). tianyi officially annoys me he needs to go solo
overall stand out list (new names only): skye (tan yitian), liang shiyu, zhong junyi (one), huang xin (eliott), honda hiromu, yang yichen (kingsley), wong yikbun (hugo), sun jingdong (ddmorecash)
this my tentative top 9 HOWEVER this is not a coherent group
Tumblr media
doing my best to make a coherent group based on what little i know thus far:
Tumblr media
making this made my head hurt, but i do think this is overall a more balanced lineup (that minimizes the sway yuehua will probably have over the group 😶) than the first. the show has too many good vocalists for this to be the lineup & i'd be pretty disappointed on that front. hopefully someone rises to the top vocally soon 🙏 if i had the change to add 3 members they'd be: 1 - another main vocal, 2 - wang kun, 3 - maybe kim dongbin for nore diversity idk
just started asia super young 😅 funny how a show can seem super popular when you're out of the loop but when you finally start watching it's crickets
this is my first time watching a youku show, i like the pacing BUT I HATE the fact that they cut so much from the free eps (free is 1 hr vip is 2.5+ 🫠). so like the irresponsible working adult i am i committed to monthly subscription (that i WILL remember to cancel the day the finale airs 😁). the other thing that i find really disappointing is that free voting on the youku app doesn't count towards their rank, it's just for extra promo 🫠 apparently you need to pay separately through their site or have a weibo associated with a mainland # (acc to fans based in hk w weibo accounts they can't even vote. when the show is filming in hk. and conducted half in canto.)
but i WILL be tuning in even though im desperately confused about everything. i watched eps 1 - 3 using the free version so im gonna do a quick recap and hopefully start catching up with the extra content tomorrow 🙏
ASY PICKS (based on ep 1 - 3)
ults: gemini (hoàng huệhùng/huang huixiong) & albert (aihe)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
these two...how could you not say cunt. gemini is a 99 liner from vietnam, a short king, his nose is pierced, his dancing is clean, and his vocals are great. does he speak chinese? no. but does he serve face? like his life depends on it (because it does). he's already on my list of survival show contestants who will live on in my brain in perpetuity. aihe is the other main slayer from the same audition group (medusa). just look at him. he walked out and i went bitch???? he's like if hu yetao and xue bayi had a baby that was mad as hell. he's an 03 liner from xinjiang, pretty good vocals, and great dance skills. had to use that shitty laptop pic bc it just radiates his whole vibe.
i like you!: vic (zhang shengxi), orenda (shuhao), walker (wang kun), kong sonhei (jiang xinxi), & karl (ting tzelong)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
vic is a 2000 liner & and member of enone. his rank is so oddly low bc he gets pretty good screentime and is very talented?
shuhao is a 2000 liner. he wasnt a pick until he did his solo rap but he's the best rapper, undisputed, on this show. plus he composed & produced & wrote & arranged their group's whole audition song? kingie.
walker is an 05 liner with a musical theatre background. to me he has a very broadcaster type face - kind and open. i noticed him mostly for how he was taking care of his younger audition partner, it was very very cute 🙄(🥹).
xinxi is an 02 liner & a member of the yuehua brigade. member of the bg boyhood (all of whom are competing) and i believe the theme song center. but more importantly, he's my birthday buddy!😁 i'll admit to noticing him first bc of the bday thing - i was actually pretty unimpressed by boyhood's audition. still, he's a very good/solid boy group member to have.
karl (ting tzelong) is a 97 liner with roots in canada & hong kong. he's a Fantastic singer and was the runner up in the mr. hong kong contest? don't think he can dance but that voice, singing or speaking...
i know you & ur fun: ollie
Tumblr media
ollie (06, under yuehua) was on boys planet so im very familiar with him (side note but this show has so many former iqiyi show contestants but none from tencent 😭). honestly he's not a pick for me but i like his energy, he's a great variety member. also i don't want to see him lose so 😭 that said i've always thought he raps like he's reading a children's book but he's graduated to slam poetry🎉
hmmm: sky (zhao tianyi)
Tumblr media
so. sky's audition was iconic. this 14 y/o kid sang, rapped, played the piano, synths, talkbox, did streetdance, and jumped into a split. he clearly loves music & is very intense about follow this passion. but 1) he's 14. 2) he clearly wants to be a soloist, thus far i can't see a single team player bone in his body. these things combined have put him lower on my list (i especially didn't really care for how he interacted with gemini during the team selection but we'll see if that continues in ep 4). but he's here currently for his talent.
keeping an eye out: archie (sin ching fung), hugo (wong singcheuk) & service (sun xiaowei)
Tumblr media
archie (98) is a singer, he sings! but honestly so many ppl on this show are good & he can't really dance so...we'll see
hugo (03, apex member) ...in his audition he looked like a member of my token bg POW lol. he has a lot of potential i just need to see more
service (03) i saw some star potential in his audition, we'll see

Note
Hi dangermousie I would like to ask for some recs, if you're feeling up for it. I love great characterization, a good story, and a mystery or genre mashing but like. At least good characters lol ToT. So The Wolf gave us Darren Wang, and Monarch Industry gave us that handsome general - any more cdramas with handsome male leads you can think of, more of that vibe rather than the super-pretty idol dramas tend to have? I'm guessing Novoland and Secret of The Three Kingdoms may have that?
(2) My other rec ask is: any dramas with a regular person and a royal as the leads? I can think of a few that are demon/heavenly clan (I'm VERY into if they have a happy ending let me know like Xuanji/Sifeng), but pretty much all the historical/costume dramas I've seen are 2 royals (which was good but I'm looking for a specific setup lol). Goodbye My Princess almost has that feel just because the 2 leads come from such different societies, and I'm looking for more stories where the leads really feel
(3) (part 2) like they came from very different backgrounds/lives. LWSS kind of gives me that feel, Guardian definitely did, Romance of Tiger and Rose did while the main love was a pirate (but I think he's actually a noble so it didn't stay so very different), Till Death Tear Us Apart they came from quite different bgs (loved that drama). Bonus if its a historical drama/costume drama since I'd love more contrast like what Goodbye My Princess had, potentially even more. But idk what's around...
Oooooh, I love this ask!
Handsome but a bit grizzled male lead? That is my favorite thing in the world despite cdramas not going for that much. I say skip Secret of Three Kingdoms if you want that because despite the fact that I am very fond of both Elvis Han and Ma Tianyi, neither is really manly - Secret is really more like idol take on Three Kingdoms. As to Novolands, Novolands Tribes and Empires is definitely gonna satisfy that need, but Eagle Flag leads are pretty young though definitely not in the least pretty or idolish.
Now, on to other recs for this. Well, let's be honest - you can't do better than Three Kingdoms 2010. It's an amazing drama in its own right but if one has a Daddy thing *ahem my finger is not pointing at self nope nope* you might as well be in the brothel with this drama.
There is also The King's War with Peter Ho and Chen Daoming. The upcoming Imperial Age also looks wonderful on that score if it ever leaves development hell.
Honestly, your best bet for that sort of thing is in hardcore historicals. But if you want something less of that genre, how about The Longest Day in Chang'an? Nirvana in Fire 2? Vigilantes in Masks? The Lady and the Liar? General and I? Love and Fight with a Terracotta Warrior? Demi Gods and Semi Devils 2003 (I think that's the year - with Hu Jun and Jimmy Lin), Story of the Han Dynasty (I have a thing for Hu Jun, sue me.)
Regular person and royal as leads.
Imperial Doctoress (she is a doctor, he's an emperor. It's a solid drama.) Novoland Eagle Flag (one of the main trio is a concubine born son of a minor gentry person, his OTP is a literal princess.) Jade Palace Lock Heart (I love this drama!!! - Feng Shao Feng is a Qing prince, Yang Mi is a modern day time traveler.) Sound of the Desert (he's a general/prince and she's a random nomad girl), The Myth (she's a princess, he's a modern day time traveler. I love that drama), Colourful Bone (sort of - he ends up being the emperor but for the bulk of it he's a bodyguard with no idea who he is and she's a princess), Princess Jieyou (well she turns out to be a princess but either way she marries into a barbarian land and so there is a bunch of culture shock), Princess Agents (she’s a slave, both dudes are princes.)
Hope this helps!

The fluffiest ghost story ever??
"Don't you like me" is a Chinese BL web novel written by Lu Tianyi. The 66 chapter (+32 extras) long story centers around Lin Feiran, a young high school student. Newly transferred, he thought he would be the center of attention with his good looks and money, only to find out that that was not going to be the case. His roommate and one-sided archnemesis, Gu Kaifeng, was more popular and seemed to be better at everything! Lin Feiran was filled with resentment and hostility… until he started seeing ghosts, that is! Terrified of his new predicament, he finds out that by touching Gu Kaifeng, his yin-yang eyes are temporarily closed. Now inseparable from his archnemesis, what misunderstandings will arise?
Personally, I found the book very entertaining, even though it wasn’t scary or full angst like I expected. There was a wonderful balance between the touching moments (which typically included ghosts) and the flirty banter between the MC and ML. Their interactions were priceless and extremely funny thanks to the narcissistic tendencies of the MC and the coddling ML who constantly praised him. There was also a lot of dialogue that really showed the personalities of the characters and added to the flow of the story. However, I thought that there could have been a little more conflict, because I found it slightly boring towards the very end. Overall, I think that this book is a great light read, especially for those who like really fluffy stories full of dog food.

Xi Sheng was supposed to be a chinese synth developed by Tianyi Love Music Culture Technology Co., Ltd., however she was cancelled in 2021. xi sheng was illustrated by Krenz, but im not sure who voiced her. on 17 jan 2020 xi shengs first and only demo was posted on bilibili (which deepl is telling me is called "farewell dream" or "parting dream", 梦别). xi sheng is a counterpart to Wei Yang
also sorry for posting this late !!

Dabro marko
Tumblr media
Guoan's second game of the season took place on 8 June against Chengdu Rongcheng. Guoan ended the match with a 1–2 loss and start the season with a defeat for the second season in a row. Cangzhou saw one of its players sent off in the 87th minute equalizing the number of players for both teams, and Yu Dabao took advantage of a corner chaos to pull one back for Guoan in the 92nd minute, but it was too little and too late. To make matters worse, Adegbenro was ruled by VAR to have committed a foul while fighting for a loose ball in the Guoan box in the 74th minute, giving away a penalty that put Guoan 0–2 behind. Chances were few and far between with Guoan a man down. In the 51st minute, another quick Cangzhou counter broke through Guoan's lines, forcing Zhang Chengdong into a last-ditch tackle attempt that saw him sent off. Trading sides, Guoan created a great chance just 20 seconds after the break with Gao Tianyi testing the opposition keeper with a close range slice in the box. However, an attacking misadventure from Liang Shaowen allowed Cangzhou players to poach the ball away, which led to a quick counter that saw Guoan concede its first in the season 43 minutes into the game. In the first half, both team traded chances with Guoan seemingly the better team earning numerous corners. New transfers Samir Memišević, Samuel Adegbenro, Kang Sang-woo also featured in the starting line-up. The team lined up with a new 3-5-2 system featuring a back line composed of academy graduate Liang Shaowen, midfielder-as-center-back Zhang Chengdong and captain Yu Dabao. The first game of the season came on 5 June against Cangzhou Mighty Lions. On 23 May, CSL announced that its 2022 season would officially commence on 3 June. Guoan traveled to Meizhou, the city in which Guoan's CSL games would be played in tournament style, and began their last pre-season training camp on 13 May. Later on 22 April, Guoan announced the singing of young striker Tian Yuda. The other attacker turned on to be Marko Dabro as the club officially announced his transfer to Guoan along with the other aforementioned players on 15 and 16 April respectively. On March 28 during an interview with the Beijing-based television network BTV, manager Xie Feng confirmed the signing of defender Kang Sang-Woo, midfielder Samir Memišević and winger Samuel Adegbenro, and that the team hopes to bring in another attacker and midfielder respectively before the end of the transfer window. The team scrambled and relocated to Haikou to continue their training on March 18, which lasted until March 31. March 8, Guoan players relocated to Shanghai to continue their preseason preparation, but the training camp was disrupted after Shanghai suffered an intense wave of COVID-19 outbreak. Wang Ziming and Liu Guobo each scored a double, with Li Boxi and Liang Shaowen adding to Guoan's tally. The team played a training match against Beijing Sports University on 26 February with Guoan winning 6–1. In early February, Guoan began its winter training camp in Kunming with the goal of improving player fitness. The next day, Guoan announced the return of Zhang Chengdong. Wang Ziming and Yu Yang signed contract extensions until the end of 20 respectively on 29 January. On 14 January 2022, Xie Feng, a club legend and three-time interim coach for Guoan, was named as the new head coach. On 8 January 2022, Beijing Guoan parted ways with head coach Slaven Bilić after one season. A whole host of action came in the first month of the pre-season. There is also Marko Dabro, born 97 and playing in Cibalia, one of the biggest talents, he is a left-footed ‘Milito”. ” Milicevic, a Croatian U21 midfielder who is big and strong player and is also technical, typical of these countries, he’s playing for Mkezzo, Bosnia. Here, here’s no lack of talent, You can just to see how many people have left for the big clubs in Europe over the past fifteen years. This is one of the most interesting markets in Europe right now, and in july they will even join the EU. Vlado Borozan, a transfer specialist on the Croatian market has spoken to about which players who could move to Italy this summer.
