Big World
Movies watched in 2025
Big World (2024, China)
Director: Lina Yang
Writer: You Xiaoying
Mini-review:
This is a hard movie to review. On the one hand, I can tell it's very well-intentioned in its portrayal of living with a disability in China, bringing to light truly important social issues. On the other hand, that doesn't change the fact that sometimes it leans towards a condescending and even pitying tone. And there's also the whole thing about casting an able-bodied actor for the lead role, a detail that will be even more divisive. It makes the representation weaker, but if you look at it from a technical point of view, Jackson Yee's performance is nothing short of outstanding. I already considered him the best actor of his generation, and his work on this film cements that. At the end of the day, I wouldn't say Big World is harmful or anything remotely like that, but its efforts don't mean there's not better representation out there.

PSA
just a heads up to my rp partners not in danmei rpc ! just bc it’s important & may not be smth others are aware of but please do not refer to my cn characters by their surname only !!!! it’s uhhh technically incorrect
an example is
bai li
&
chang geng
you wouldn’t call them bai or chang because those are their surnames! technically their first names are geng and li. but it’s important that due to the nature of cn names and their conjugation that you refer to their full name. in fact for a lot of cn ppl and in this context of cnovels, calling characters even just by thir first names is extremely intimate/overly familiar... (ie; bai li calls his S.O. shi wuduan as “wuduan” often) it’s just something i ask my partners to keep in mind since i’ve noticed it happening recently, which is ok ! cultural nuance happens so i hope this kinda helps in the future...
#hawk speaks. ╾ (ooc)#i myself am not a native of china nor chinese so i had to learn this#and i think it's important to respect works that are deeply ingrained in their cultures....
