Sweet, Sweet Acid

New Humanoid 12-inch: April's Featured Release

Sweet Acid Sound - Humanoid (2023, De:tuned) is Brian Dougans, 1/2 of FSOL since the Global LP in 1989. However, often on these new Humanoid releases, Yage is credited as the engineer, which is just another pseudonym for the duo. Sweet Acid Sound indeed. A bit lighter and housey-er than the usual serving, with a hint of 1990-ish Italo-house, which might not be on everybody's palette. 

Unlike the recent bangers, this beat is synced to standard house at around 125 BPM or less. Sweet Acid Sound does make a nice homage to the pure house era. More-so, the first LP on Westside Records in 1989 which showcased various forms of house music: from Trax Records' Chicago Acid to 2 In A Room style Hip House to Tony Humphries/Kiss FM inspired Garage. And at this point, Garry Cobain, a mate of Dougans, is brought in as a guest vocalist on Global's darkest track, the opening b-side's Sunshine and Brick, foreshadowing what was to follow later. Sweet Acid Sound is due on May 29th on De:tuned.

Feeling very conflicted about Queer.

It hit all the emotional beats I wanted! Ugly, undignified yearning. The return of bodily hunger during withdrawal. The brief synchronicity of a summer fling (oh god, you're going to be alone forever). I was filled with secondhand embarrassment for an hour straight, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Buuuut sometimes it seemed less concerned with being a good movie than being a faithful adaptation. I can see how some people wouldn't understand what it was trying to do (I love the review on rotten tomatoes that called Lee a "barroom bore"--yes, that's the whole point), especially regarding the Joan scenes. And there are a couple book quotes that don't make much sense removed from the original context. But I suppose that's why it got a limited release.

(Also, not to brag, but I called the ending months ago. 🥳)

well really liked that. especially the last third. the ending was sickly romantic but i like that shit so. i think this movie is kind of everything for everyone tho, because i've heard people say the last third was their least favourite part of the movie, but for me it absolutely elevated it, especially because it expands on the book in such a compelling way

yeah so i was thinking about some old files and ended up musing over a "rebirth of the evil-mother-in-law" transmigrator snippet i wrote at one point. failing to find it, i figured i would sit down and write maybe 300 words about it to excise it from my brain.

the "og fl" is a character named "jiang yage", so i spent maybe two minutes contemplating character names for the original transmigrator ("surnamed jiang? these sorts of characters usually share at least a part of their name with the 'og'") before i abruptly realized i already had a character surnamed jiang and i had the chance to do the funniest thing.
