Ochaco Uraraka and Katsuki Bakugou: Who saves heroes when they’re the ones in trouble?

Do ya’ll every think abt how Katsuki took over the “who supports/saves heroes when they’re the ones in trouble” plotline in the current arc, which Ochaco originally had? Yes, that question came to her first when she saved Izuku from the Blackwhip rampage with the help of Shinsou, and once more reflected on that said question with her speech to let Izuku in UA.

But the thing is, her attention has shifted from saving heroes (Izuku) to villains (Toga); even during her speech to save Izuku, she thinks of Toga’s smile and ever since then couldn’t stop pondering it—so much so that she had to voice out this dilemma to Izuku which, after talking to a bit, had her arrive at the same conclusion to save their respective villains.

Where does Katsuki come in this? Well, as seen from his development in the JT arc, a lot of it is centred around being willing to “be saved” and “save” as a hero towards other heroes. He acknowledged the save aspect of “win to save, save to win” and had therefore improved on his ability to lead a team and find compatibility in working with them (Also notice the placement of the texts lmao).

This is a huge sign of improvement, as he used to despise the idea of being saved/helped cause he believed it to be a sign of weakness and vulnerability. Also, the “saving” aspect of heroism wasn’t something that came naturally to him, so instead he put most his energy into winning in order to compensate for it. It was huge character flaw that held him back in a number of ways. However, that flaw had began to unravel bit by bit as early as the final exam arc when he and Izuku had to work together, then the Kamino arc (where he took Kirishima’s hand), the provisional license exam arc (where he trusted Kirishima and Kaminari to win and save him) and had since been accelerated after Deku vs Kacchan pt. 2.

Further down the line, we have seen him grow into the belief that heroes save everyone, even other heroes. But as he’s been opening up to this idea, Izuku’s been closing himself off from this idea in relation to himself. His self-sacrificial tendencies, something Katsuki’s already aware of, were now worsened due to the duty and weight of carrying OFA. As he allowed himself to worry, it became clear to him that Izuku will not share his burdens unless someone insists their presence. Because of that, he’s made it his personal job to follow Izuku to war, catch up to his pace and match him, and make sure he doesn’t endanger himself (this is true before, during, and after Katsuki Bakugou rising).

Going back to Ochaco, it’s clear that both she and Katsuki’s focal point in the “saving other heroes as heroes” plot line is Izuku. The idea of them also being heroes who save heroes had been introduced in the same arc, which was during the JT arc. The difference is that Ochaco had mostly diverged from this plot line, while Katsuki has made it his main priority alongside winning (save to win), cause saving people is what paves the path to absolute victory. He even singles himself out as being the person who steps in when Izuku can’t handle it all on his own. Furthermore, he worked together with Izuku in saving All Might (both their childhood hero) to win against AFO.

So what gives? Why was Ochaco the person to introduce the question of who saves heroes, when Katsuki’s the one to pedal it in the final arc? Why didn’t Horikoshi stick with this motivation for Ochaco when it could’ve been used as an opportunity to make leeway for more romantic tropes concerning the main couple? Where the presumed heroine wants to save the hero, is closest to the hero, and becomes targeted by the villains. The answer is simple.

Horokoshi isn’t following a formula, and loves subverting our expectations.

Ochaco’s crush towards Izuku and former motivation of being the one to support/save heroes acted as a red herring to Toga. Her crush introduced the conflict of how to love others and yourself authentically, a conflict that’s central to Toga and Ochako’s fights all the way up to their final confrontation. Then the “who saves heroes” plot line is what put a crack in her imagine of hero society, a society who views heroes as infallible and abuses their selflessness, making people such as Deku—someone she had idolised for his heart and self-sacrificial traits—buckle under the weight of unrealistic expectations. Although this was important to the development of Izuku and Ochaco’s relationship itself, considering her speech which emphasised that she was one of the first people to truly support Izuku, it also made leeway for her to reflect on how hero society views villains, too. Then there she discovers that she wants to see Toga smile again, and find her among the crowd of happy faces in front of her.

Katsuki, on the other hand, takes on the roles that were expected to be given to Ochaco on account of her ‘love interest’ status. He’s the person whose consistently been saving/supporting Izuku from the first to the last war, the person targeted by ShigAFO cause of his closeness to Izuku, the person that has known about OFA longer than his peers, and the person at the center of Izuku’s “control your heart” plot line. The choice for Katsuki to take on these roles weren’t made willy nilly, as the narrative makes sure time and time again to emphasise that his relationship with Izuku is unique, complementary, deeply personal, and intimate; they are two people who complete each other’s brand of heroism by having what the other doesn’t.

Anywho, that doesn’t mean his individuality as a character is diminished cause these roles are typically associated with lazer-focused-on-the-mc heroines. Remember, his biggest character flaw had to do with being too independent and hyper focused on winning. He was a hero who formerly had trouble with the concept of being saved and saving others, especially towards the person he had refused the hand of and despised all these years, so it’s impactful and telling of his character development to now be the one who outstretches his own hand to other heroes, notably to his classmates and All Might, and most importantly Izuku.

His journey is of reaching an understanding with the person he wronged and couldn’t understand due to the views hero society ingrained in him, and to save that person from themselves. It’s understanding that heroes such as him, Izuku, and All Might, no matter how much power they hold, won’t always win if they refuse saving and support; so far, his arc focuses on the humanisation of heroes. It’s not unlike Ochaco’s, Izuku’s, and Shoto’s, who want/wanted to reach an understanding and save the people they had despised and couldn’t understand due to the views hero society ingrained in them; their arc focuses on the humanisation of villains.

That’s why I’m hopeful about DvK3 happening, where it’s Katsuki’s turn to see and respond to Izuku’s inner turmoil, and save him by his words.

Anyways, I’m sure by now we’ve all reflected on the romantic implications the roles Katsuki takes on, so I think bkdk being implied canon isn’t far off. However, I’m still not sure on what kind of deconstruction/subversion Hori is aiming for—does he want to say that the tropes usually applied to love interests can be platonic? As to say that romantic relationships aren’t always the closest? Or is the rival the actual love interest, and the perceived love interest is not. We’re not sure yet.

I feel like Raven and Wanda bear more similarities to each other than Zatanna?? Like the comparison feels forced to me, and it's not like the Chthon mythos of Wanda is relatively unknown? So I'm really confused

I agree. Wanda and Zatanna may be pushed as counter parts for their respective universes. But aside from being heroic women who use magic… that’s about all they have in common. In fact Wanda didn’t even have magic until at least a decade after her debut.

In my opinion, Zatanna is more similar to Dr. Strange, and Clea Strange. The Dr Strange similarities were admittedly more early on, during her tenure with the Justice League and the Justice League Detroit. Being called the sorceress supreme, having similar exclamations and catchphrases like “Hotaths Rings!” It definitely felt a little intentional.

With Clea I feel the parallels are a little more unintentional, and kinda just happened? Both women are magic hybrids with parents who come from secret or hidden magical societies. Both have an incredibly powerful magic relative (Dormammu, and Arion respectively.) Both tend to be more known for (and often overshadowed by) the magic males they are involved with, despite being incredibly knowledgeable and powerful sorceresses in their own right.

Their looks are even a little mirrored if you think about it, and kinda squint. A pattern on their leggings, fishnets for Zee, Circles for Clea, black hair for Zee and white for Clea. Cute shoes, fancy gloves. Plus Both technically have the ability to create new spells. Both can fight pretty well and have somewhat of a temper. Like if you try you can see some connections

I’m not saying they’re perfect match ups, just… maybe better match ups than Zatanna and Wanda are. Their similarities are still loose but again I feel there are more of them. But ya’ll will have to weigh in

P.S it’s also always hilarious whenever anyone tries to claim Zatanna is a copy of Wanda. Because again they have very little in common, and the differences were only more apparent at their debuts. Again with Wanda not even actually having magic yet, and Zatanna being a whole legacy character. (You’d actually be surprised how Wanda more often is technically the one copying Zatanna, but I digress). Anyone calling them copies of each other doesn’t know what they’re saying.

CAFE MARSHMILLE ☕ DTIYS CHALLENGE

*screams from the mountains* FINALLY! It is done!!!

A DTIYS Challenge that took this squiggle meister way too long to complete cause I just had to be EXTRA and be like “Oh why don’t I turn this into a cool mixed media project that has both 2D and 3D in the artwork. I’ve been wanting to do that for sooo long so why not try it with this? Wouldn’t that be swell?”

So after a hot couple of weeks, here it is. The fruit of my labour. I don’t actually think anyone will really notice (or…even care) that this is supposed to be a digital mixed media. But hey, at least I finished it! So HUZZAH for me!

Like I said, my main objective for this piece was to create an illustration that combined my digital art skills with my 3D modeling skills where the end result would feature an art with 2D and 3D elements as well as a stylized 3D prop project.  Something I can also share over on my 3D art blog.

This meant that I had to make my 3D models match the style of my drawing of Marshmilla (the featured character) which, for those of you who have seen some of 3D work, is a style that I really love. I’ve been wanting to marry my 2D with my 3D skills for a long while and this is my first step towards that personal goal.

In case you couldn’t tell, all the props in this piece are 3D models while I drew the character. Speaking of which, the character in question is named Marshmilla.

Marshmilla and her wonderful Cafe Marshmille belong to the very talented Sonia Stegemann. I’ve been following her work a lot lately over on her Instagram page. She actually held an official DTIYS challenge before with the same character but I didn’t get a chance to do that one. This design of Cafe Marshmilla is actually from her personal redraw challenge and I loved the design so much (along with the cafe props) that I asked Sonia if I could draw this version of Marshmilla in my style and she gave me the ok.

Didn’t tell her I was also going to 3D model her cafe prop designs though XD So, for what it’s worth, I hope she likes my rendition of her designs. As always with these challenges, I hope I did the original justice and you folks like my take on it.

Standing out on the balcony was refreshing for sure. The busy evening life on Coruscant going about their business, humbles me and reminds me that I am one of so many people that live here. The speeders in the sky lanes offer their own chorus of sounds, while the buildings seem to glow by the way their lighting reflects of the foggy city air. The sky was still somewhat bright from the day light but beginning to dim. Coruscant isn't perfect but it has its charm.

"Rough night?" An unfamiliar female voice comes from over my shoulder. Her accent is not one I recognize.

"Something like that" I chuckle before turning to face the source of the voice. A petit woman with long brown hair offers a warm smile. Something about her causes me to open up. "I think I'm being stood up" I confess, tugging at my lacy glove.

"Girl in that dress I'm pretty sure you could have anyone in that room! You're absolutely stunning"

Her words cause me to blush, "You're so very kind." A clone in an aqua blue tux approaches, his silvery hair spiked slightly, making him stand out from the others. He offers me a smile before whispering something to the woman, who then turns back to me.

"It was nice meeting you..."

"Circe"

"I'm Anfisa. Give him a chance, it's still early."

Offer a smile I nod in response. She takes the hand of the clone, he sweeps her off her feet back towards the doors. I can't help the hint of jealousy that creeps into my veins watching her facial expression - one of absolute admiration - when she looked at the Captain. Maybe Hunter really isn't going to show? Rex is still an option...but it wouldn't be fair to him... Being so deep in thought I had not heard the doors opening behind me.

"Circe?"

Spinning around, I'm ready to defend myself - natural reflex of being Mandalorian I guess. The minute I lock eyes with the man that was behind me, my entire body relaxes. At first I'm speechless, I mean just as I was starting to come to terms with the fact that he wasn't going to show? My eyes flick between him and the other members of the Clone Force 99 who are in the door way. Each of them dressed in full suits.

"Look I'm sorry if you thought I wasn't coming. Our mission ran a little longer than expected. I would've tried to contact you but I don't exactly have your code." As he continues he has my undivided attention, it's as if time itself stood still and we were the only two who are aware.

I don't say I word, partially because now I feel horrible for being irritated but partially because...well I'm still taking in the sight of him in a suit. The suit is red and black with gold accents to match me perfectly. It fits him so well, I can't help but wonder if it was a one of a kind, made only for him and exactly for him. His broad shoulders seem even more muscular and his thighs...Don't even get me started on the man's thighs.

Hunter seems to be feeling the same way as his eyes roam over my exposed shoulders and down the length of my dress. The way he studies me is as if he is trying to commit every little detail to memory. He makes his way back to my face, expression is gentle and in awe. Maker I've got it so bad for him, he makes me weak in the knees. If the universe hadn't come to a screeching halt already, it just did.

In a few short steps, he closes the gap between us. Reaching up he gently pulls the mask up off my face. I'm far too lost in the warmth of his brown eyes to protest. He places his free hand on my face and runs the pad of his thumb over my cheek, "I needed to see your face."

"I feel bad for being mad" I let out nervous laugh.

"Don't. You didn't know" his reassures me. When he removes his hand, I immediately crave the warmth of his touch.

Looking down at my mask in his hands he chuckles. The sound is music to my ears, the kind you listen to on repeat all day. It's warmth makes it way to my core, I hold onto the feeling never wanting to let it go. Hunter admires the mask turning it over in his hands as if its a worthy piece. A few strands of his wavy brown locks fall towards his face and only now I realized this is the first time I've seen him without a bandana. His hair looks so thick and soft, it's hard not to imagine what it would be like with my fingers tangled throughout.

He carefully reaches up and ties the black silk band back around my head, securing the mask on my face. His movements are so gentle yet tactical, the combination quite impressive.

"I like it" he admires his work.

I can't help but chuckle, "I thought you might." The only reason I bought this was because of his tattoo.

He offers me his hand, which I take without hesitation. The way our hands fit together is almost as if we were made for one another. Leading me towards the rest of the group who all offer warm smiles, except for Crosshair who just nods. We pass by them and enter the ballroom. The feeling of eyes on us is almost enough to make my skin crawl and I'm not usually the type to get social anxiety.

As if sensing the change, Hunter looks over his shoulder at me and offers a reassuring smile. He leads me through the crowd of dancing couples and pulls me in to him tight. One arm wrapped tightly around me, hand spread across my exposed back while the other still holds my hand. The two of us find our place amongst one another like two puzzle pieces coming together for the first time. My body immediately relaxes, leaning into his as an elegant symphony takes us over.

"I'm sorry...I'm not usually this nervous" I admit, feeling like he wont judge me. He leans in and goosebumps erupt all over my body.

"Let them stare, you're the most beautiful woman here. They're probably jealous" he whispers in my ear.

In that moment, I'm grateful he was holding onto me so tightly because my knees felt as though they might buckle. Ecstasy runs through my veins while we continue to dance. I'm dizzy, but not because of the way Hunter gracefully spins me. The dizziness is caused by the man himself, his entire essence. His gaze piercing into mine, strong arms protecting me from the world, the warmth that radiates from his body. This man knows what he's doing to me and its almost unfair. His protective yet gently nature unwavering, all contributing to the fact that the crush I have for this man...is deepening into the love struck fool.

He lets out another one of those chuckles that heats my core. Instinctively I lean my head into his, drinking in his scent which is gentle and woodsy. I never imagined he would use scented products because they might overwhelm him. A sudden sharp inhale tells me he's doing the same but I worry its too much.

"I'm sorry if its too much" my voice barely above a whisper, I can't find it in me to speak any louder but I know he can hear me.

"No, its not. But its probably my new favorite" he mumbles.

Turning my face towards his, we are so close his nose brushes over my cheek not covered by the mask. Both of us are breathing as if the tension in the air has suddenly made it quite heavy. Out of the corner of my eye, I notice the moon light coming through the double doors we walked through what felt like minutes ago. Hunter doesn't move but his eyes follow mine. He turns to me, but I stare into the rays of moonlight for a moment longer. Slowly I pull my gaze away, turning my attention to Hunter, whose eyes roam my masked face. "What?" I ask rather defensively.

"Should we get out of here?" He asks as if reading my mind.

My stomach does a few flips as a smile makes it way onto my face. Without any hesitation he pulls away from me without letting go of my hand. He leads me through the crowd of people who are going about their own business. Stopping suddenly he turns to me, "Wait here. I'll be right back."

I watch as Hunter disappears into the crowd but I do as I'm told. The whole evening was so surreal, I replay the events over and over in my head.

"You guys make such a lovely couple" a woman with raven hair says from off to my left. She feels familiar to me like maybe I’ve seen her around the Senate before? Maker knows. Her date, the one and only Commander Wolffe offers me a glare which seems cold if you don't know the man. However, he's actually quite nice once you get to know him.

"Thank you" I smile back at her before nodding politely at the Commander.

Before I can even think, Hunter re-emerges from the crowed, grabs my hand, and rushes me out of the building.

Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)

Character: Maxwell Lord

I’ve got mixed feelings about this movie, ya’ll. It’s funny for how good the first movie was, the second just didn’t deliver. Well almost. The movie takes Diana Prince into the 1980s, where she works as a curator for a museum and does hero work on the side. But things change when Maxwell Lord and Cheetah team up to bring the world into chaos and it’s up to Diana to stop them, as she questions everything she knows about herself.

So Pedro can play the hell out of two archetypes (plus many more); the morally gray character and a single father. And Maxwell Lord is both of them. Pedro and Max were a match made in Hollywood heaven! And it did not disappoint. The film was upsettingly second rate but, as freaking usual, Pedro carried the movie and then some. He perfectly balanced a surprising amount of characteristics in this character—near unhinged desperation, emotional fragility, disingenuousness, and greed. I think it may be one of the more uniquely emotional performances I’ve seen from him.

I loved the duplicity of this role. One moment Max is an egocentric manipulator the next he’s a tearful, loving father. He’s a suave businessman making a commercial and then he’s a manic opportunist unhinged with greed. His arc was ten times more compelling than anything else going on in the movie. The best aspect was his relationship with his young son, Alistair (dad role #3) He’s not perfect, he makes mistakes multiple times as a father and it feels realistic. But nonetheless Max tries to prioritize him, and by the end of the film we understand it’s his own childhood struggles that influence his reckless choices. He doesn’t want Alistair to experience the same things he did. This is why we’re able to sympathize and care for him as a “villain”.

My favorite scene is the Black Gold commercial. It’s a pure 80’s cheese fest and Pedro just revels in it. His sense of humor def came out to play with this one. And it’s still just the right amount of fun balanced with arrogant villainy. My other favorite was his scene with the President in his office as he desperately tries to get him to make a wish (still can’t get over how the second he got the wishing stone he became it lol) Pedro acts his ass off—it’s so physical and emotional and unhinged. It’s super impressive and Wonder Woman doesn’t feel deserving of such a great performance! It doesn’t deserve Pedro period!

Do you think Oscar birthday could be in October like Ruby's

Hiya anon-chan! Hmm, that’s not a bad thought. However, this squiggly Pinehead has always been more preferring of the idea of Oscar being either an Easter/Spring-born child as a Taurus horoscope or a New Year Baby.

Originally I had pegged May 15th as a candidate for Oscar’s birthday but the CRWBY showrunners ended up giving that to Weiss. I mean nothing wrong with Oscar sharing a birthday with another one of our main cast of heroes. Still; I think the main consensus is Oscar having his own birthday separate from another character (since he already shares the spotlight with Ozpin, no need for him to share his birthday with another character too!)  Although, him sharing the same astrological sign with another character wouldn’t be bad.  

 January 1st still remains my top pick for a possible birth date for Oscar.

Then again; there is also August 21st that is starting to grow on me. And similar to my Oscar Baby New Year theory, this date also fits for him given his fairytale inspiration.

August 21st is the canonical birthday of Princess Ozma from the Wizard of Oz who Oscar draws inspiration from.

If Oscar shared the same birthday as his Wizard of Oz counterpart then it would make him a Leo horoscope.

If this were canon then Oscar would be the second Leo in our hero group next to Yang Xiao Long whose birthday is July 28th.

I actually think this works quite nicely.  Oscar and Yang do share a few similarities in respect to their personalities and more importantly, their dynamic with Ruby.

And speaking of Ruby---Ruby is a Scorpio as we know her to be.

According to research, the Leo-Scorpio combination is a match of opposites. A Leo is outgoing, warm, and sunny, while a Scorpio is introverted, intense, and emotional. The result of this pairing is a love relationship that will be passionate above all else.

So to actually answer your question m’fam, no I don’t think Oscar’s canonical birthday could be in October like Ruby…since I actually think it would be more fitting if his birthday came before hers in the year.

And as of now, Oscar being a fellow lion born in August--- protective, warm and caring to perfectly contrast yet balance out Ruby (in a much better way than even her older sister by the way) is really, really working for me.

While I will forever love the concept of him being a new year baby, if Oscar is somehow revealed to be a Leo just like Princess Ozma in the Wizard of Oz and just like Yang in RWBY…then I can totally see it. And I totally dig it cause it fits.

Sims - get to know me

1. What’s your favourite sims death? Either meteor because of HOW dramatic it is, or pufferfish since that’s like, the only way for your own sim to kill another sims (without mods, anyway).

2. Alpha CC or Maxis Match? Mostly Maxis, but I do have mix elements (like the hairs that aren’t TECHNICALLY alpha but are so detailed they almost look it), especially in my fandom saves because the outfits in those are always alpha.

3. Do you cheat when your sims gain weight? Nah, if I really want a sim to stay the same weight, I lock the weight/gain loss (I do this for my selfsim every time so she’ll STOP LOSING WEIGHT oh my god woman). But if I’m playing with it on, what happens happens.

4. Do you use move objects? I don’t even have to enter this cheat because it’s always ticked on my BBB.

5. Favorite mod? I mean the most practical favorites are MCCC and BBB, and really most of the ;must haves’ the majority of people have, so lemmie pick a lesser seen one – PreferencesPlus by Helaene is a huge game-changer for someone who really dislikes all the missing likes/dislikes in the game.

6. First expansion/game/stuff pack you got? ...I wanna say Outdoor Retreat? I know, horrible pick, I didn’t know how lacking it was.

8. Who’s your favorite sim that you’ve made? This...is hard, but I’m gonna have to roll with Amie, because she’s evolved beyond being just a sim at this rate – she’s also my FFXIV character, as well as a VtM character. But she absolutely did START as a sim.

9. Have you made a simself? Yes – she’s set loose in EVERY save I have for sake of hilarity – I love passing by her in-game and she’s doing something utterly random. The last time I saw her she was shooting down a goth witch lady flirting with her – thrilled the sexuality update can make her proper asexual now, was so happy to see it without having to put dumb flags on her!

10. What sim traits do you give yourself? Lover, Unflirty, Lazy, Cat Lover, Creative, Foodie.

11. Which is your favorite EA hair color? I’m a pretty big fan of the middle red tone. Or the green, if we’re picking unnatural colors.

12. Favorite EA hair? The RoM updo short locs are SO good. Honorable mention to the EL undercut half-ponytail.

13. Favorite life stage? I’m gonna be boring and say YA, because the game is LITERALLY built around them so you have so, SO many more options.

14. Are you a builder or are you in it for the gameplay? I do a little bit of everything, but CAS is my specialty. I spend HOURS in there.

15. Are you a CC creator? If some hair/eye recolors and simple tattoos count, then yeah. I really can’t be fussed learning blender beyond pose-making.

16. Do you have any simblr friends/a sim squad? My social anxiety stops me from interacting a lot, even if I try my best to talk to people. Like, I know the chances of someone being an asshole to me are very, very slim and that most everyone is chill and laid back like I am – REASONABLY I know I’m being dumb, but also my brain is an asshole.

17. What’s your favorite game? In Sims, I’ve honestly only played 4 (a friend sent me 3 a while ago but I have yet to fire it up). Outside sims? Uh...Okami for single player, Guild Wars 2 for multiplayer.

20. How has your “sim style” changed throughout your years of playing? Lord I have no idea...I’ve been fiddling with different types of sim face styles, but I keep falling back to the same one, really – at least for non-themed saves. And it doesn’t even stand out I’m pretty basic bitch.

21. What’s your Origin ID? Monophony! I mostly make sims, but there’s a few terrible builds there, too.

22. Who’s your favorite CC creator? That is a hard as hell question...but I wanna say @simandy,. For multiple reasons, but primarily because their hairs are just...to die for.

23. How long have you had a simblr? It’s been a year or two, but I took several hiatuses as I got distracted by my MMOs. I have a goldfish attention span.

24. How do you edit your pictures? I have several different reshade presets I’ll alternate between, and a good number of Photoshop actions and/or PSDs, and it’s always some combo of those. Each save has a different reshade/action (or PSD) combination to make them have their own looks (I have a word doc for ref so I know what save uses what combo).

25. What expansion/game/stuff pack is your favorite so far? Vampires will always be my favorite, but I was shocked by how much I also enjoyed Werewolves – I’m not a werewolf person, really. Non-occult...Growing Together really does add a ton through the whole game.

I had a thought that maybe the recent flux of… out-of-left-field, used-to-be-obscure ships have come into play because of the fandom environment surrounding shipping. (I’ll preface this by saying that I have those kinds of ships too, and I do not mean to bash on any of those ships and shippers!)

If you ship main characters (or super popular ships) there is always going to be fandom drama surrounding it, no matter what the ship is or how unproblematic it is. There are extreme corners of fandom that are hypercritical and policing of what ships are and are not “morally allowed.” And if you try hard enough, you can always stretch for a moral quandary.

So there are people who are in those fandom corners. Fandom is a place to have fun. But with such policing of what is and isn’t allowed, with the goalposts between ships changing at a whim, rules applying to one ship but not the other, there is a worry that liking the wrong ship will get you harassment.

Maybe that’s why there’s recently been such a boom of ships I’ve never really seen before. Characters that never interacted much (if at all), maybe ships that are aesthetically matching, maybe the characterization isn’t even quite accurate to the characters shipped. But if they’re not The Bad Ship then it’s allowed! Nobody really cares about the shipping drama of X character. So people can ship these things freely without worry.

(I have crackships too, between characters who only have one exchange, or who are not even in the same game/shows! This is all fine! I am fine with out-of-left-field ships! The sudden rise in popularity of those ships is interesting to me! The ships that should have like 50-ish fics bc of how obscure they are! And I’m glad ya’ll shippers are eating well. It’s just..curious to me the happenings of it.)

Outlander Episode 702

When Claire Fraser is disgusted to the point she’d like to take a shovel to your head, you know your life choices are problematic. Had she been armed with even a garden trowel, she would have brained Allan in the head and fed him to the pig. But Ian saves the day with a well placed arrow in the back. “He was right, Auntie. He had to die.” He and Claire bury the body and are caught by Mrs Bug who decides to jump in and help them. See ya’ll, she may have been the gossipmonger last season, but she’s nice! And she’ll help bury the bodies no questions asked. Oh, and hey thanks Ian...see you next week! Maybe..

This episode was in high gear - Episode 2 and they are almost 1/4 way through the book, which if 7a is Book 7 and 7b is Book 8 they are right on track. But nearly 2,000 pages of book crammed into 16 episodes means we are going at warp speed. 

As the Macs are getting ready to go, Jamie gives Claire a gemstone in case she wants to go with them. He’s not brave enough to live without her, but brave enough to try for her sake. But, Claire’s not having it. She chucks it out the window and Jamie is all of us when he says, “you’re throwing it out?!” Yeah, Claire! Gemstones don’t grow on trees. Good luck finding that little black stone on the ground in the morning. Too bad she threw it, it might have come in handy later. 

Lots of emotion this episode as we watch Bree meet William, and Jamie and LJ acknowledging that the war may mean they’ll never be on the same side again. Amanda is born (with dad and grandda present!) and after Claire discovers a heart problem, they decide her best chance is in the future. Heartbreaking scenes of Jamie and Bree saying goodbye. So sad. I’m not a crier, but even I needed a tissue at that one. 

Back at the Big House, Claire breaks down as she realizes they’ve lost their whole family. No Fergus & Marsali, no Bree & RogerMac and no grandchildren. Jamie tries to comfort her while she sobs. 

But as she does, Claire pulls herself together and life goes on. She’s walking up to the house one afternoon and gets the sense that something isn’t right. She goes into the house and that asshole Donner is there and he wants information and a gemstone. His gang brings in Jamie and it’s a good thing for Donner those guys had a hold on Jamie because when he hears Wendigo’s name he’s ready to rumble. Jamie tries a bit of acting on them saying that Claire hid the gemstones so they can’t kill her, but J&C are out of practice and Donner doesn’t believe them. The gang starts ransacking the surgery and they break open the ether bottle. Donner lights a match and BOOM! There goes the Big House. 

Some other observations:

They introduced the French gold. Jamie and Arch going back and forth in gaelic. Oooh, plot point! It’s a big deal in the book, but I expect it will be a speed bump next week as we move on.

Lizzie’s throuple is going strong. If the Ridge is scandalized there’s no time for their shenanigans. They’re going to just have to deal.

William! One of my favorite characters. The actor playing William was pretty good for the short scene he was in. I’m looking forward to later in the season - he’s got some good stuff coming up. 

Overall a very good episode. Just an emotional wringer though. Looking forward to next week.

She’s raising a teenage boy post-divorce with an uninvolved dad - you know how that go. She’s going home to Urban Crest for the first time in years to see her ill grandmother Janet Lee, her maternal figure (her mom is alive and well but she doesn’t have a maternal bone in her body). Ossa is also in Urban Crest to see about an ill grandparent, his grandfather Juan Toussaint. Two unsuspecting individuals cross paths and you can only call it divine timing. A love story that ended decades ago helps spur a young love and gives it a fighting chance. Ossa felt so different from his sisters, more open and vulnerable to love although he’s deny it. Imani is the perfect match for him. She was not grown and born in the mafia life but she’ll go toe to toe with anyone and that’s just what he needs. Both characters have been misloved but not this time! This time they riding with each other! The story started slow and steady, really laid the groundwork for the back half of the story. That ending though! I’m ready for Misunderstood! So many twists and turns, I’m trying to put all the pieces together. I’m definitely going to reread books 1&2!

I love this cover.

From looking at it you know EVERYTHING you need to know about this book:

Erotic Sci-fi Romance? Check

Colorful Bunny Aliens? CHECK!

I knew the second I saw this cover that I’d enjoy this book. And I was right.

I think this cover’s composition is beautiful. Obviously camp, but done really well. The subtitle banner covering up where the bunny ears and the human bodies “connect” is a really smart move especially since a lot of Romance covers block out the faces (or at least the eyes) of the characters anyway so it doesn’t seem weird by cover standards.

Speaking of cover standards... I’m honestly surprised that the mouths don’t have fangs or bunny teeth (I’ve read this book multiple times and I truly cant tell you if their fangs are where bunny teeth are or where human canines are) and I’d like to visualize it so here ya’ll go. I think either of these options would have been the cherry on top of this whole cover.

But it wasn’t necessary and I think if you didn’t spend as much time looking at the cover as I have, you would never even think about their lack of bunny fangs.

As you probably figured out from the series title (Holiday Hedonism), this book is Easter themed. And I think the color choices are gorgeous. The yellow could have easily felt out of place amongst the darker blues, purples, and pinks but with the addition of the lighter blue to offset it it doesn’t come off as overpowering nor does it call attention to itself. The colors are very Eastery without being vomitously pastel (don’t get me wrong, I love pastels, but I think the contrast of light and dark works better for this cover). But, my biggest problem with this cover is actually that the colors of the bunny heads don’t match the color of the human bodies. (see below: ears on left, bodies on right)

But again, I don’t think people would/will notice that unless they’ve stared at this cover as much as I have. (btw I want everyone to know that there’s a kinda important plot point where the pink and blue bunnies’ sperm mix and I think the purple that results is probably the color of that planet… which is so funny to me 😂)

I have no way of knowing if that spaceship is accurate to the ship (any of them tbh) that’s in the book so I’m not gonna comment on it, just know that 80% of this book takes place on a spaceship so I like that it was included. I also think that without it the cover would’ve felt a bit... lopsided? with that empty space, so it was a good decision.

It wasn’t until I was working on this post that I checked out this book’s Goodreads page and let me tell you, if I had bought this paperback and the cover that’s on there had arrived... I’d be pissed 🥴

I hate this cover so so so much. And this coming from someone who currently loves illustrated covers. The Goodreads description even ends with this very important note:

Important note: We know the cover is cute AF, it got you to come check it out, right? So listen, we know this may LOOK like something you'd flip through while lounging at the pool but it is - and we cannot stress this enough - VERY much an adult novel, with moving parts and moisture and no-no (yes! yes!) words all over the place. This is your heads up.

I have to wonder which cover came first (I’m assuming it’s the illustrated but I can’t be sure). Either one, I’m glad I have the non-illustrated cover in my collection. Not just because I think the non-illustrated better represents the book, but also because the colors of the illustrated cover don’t really say blue, pink, and yellow to me. They’re more... teal, raspberry, and mustard. Which isn’t wrong perse but I just don’t like it 🤷🏽‍♀️ I also don’t like that the girl on the cover has blonde hair when Ch’ik very clearly has white hair.

This was a fun cover to appreciate haha, and if you like this kind of book I highly recommend it. I haven’t read any others in the series, but this cover is definitely my favorite of them. (If you decide to read them, I recommend getting samples first cuz I downloaded the first book’s sample and screamed when it was 2nd person 😂)

Meanwhile, canon:

The only one of the sisters who’s beauty has been acknowledged by every single member of the IC (Rhys and Amren included)

The only one who’s beauty was commented on by the villain of the og trilogy

The one who, even at her worst, was described as the most beautiful female, mate or not, that a centuries old well traveled high lord’s son had ever seen.

The one who the cauldron found “so lovely”

The one who even at 11 years old, Mama Archeron was planning to use her beauty to make an advantageous match.

The one whose beauty as a preteen intimidated a woman of marrying age.

The one whose beauty was a topic of conversation at the high lord’s meeting by none other than Eris Vanserra himself.

And then there’s that time that Feyre did actually dim Elain’s beauty when she went to the human lands:

Sounds a whole lot like what Cas described at the CoN.

Then there’s the obvious contrast between Elain and Nesta in their wardrobe choices.

Nesta: tiara of black stone and sapphire

Elain: combs of pearl

Nesta: skintight velvet bodice, barely there straps, neckline plunged to her navel with another sapphire

Elain: long sleeved and modest

Nesta: red lips and kohl lined eyes

Elain: no makeup mentioned

This seems rather significant after this comment made by Mor:

And after the CoN, Nesta describes Elain’s dress as “ill suited” which is synonymous with unflattering or unbecoming. It gives a bit of a different take than how Cas describes Elain, and puts the onus on the dress.

Another element of contrast we see between Nes and Elain is how they responded to Eris. When Elain tells the story of Nesta seducing the duke she says:

And isn’t it interesting how Nesta uses the same tactics on Eris while Elain does the opposite:

Admitting to what the text tells us over and over is not “insulting Nesta.” Canonically, all of the Archeron sisters are beautiful; however, Elain’s beauty outshines her sisters. These facts can and do co exist. Accusing real life people interpreting the text, provided for us, as being insulting to a fictional characters’ beauty feels a little bit like projection since it sounds like ya’ll want to downplay Elain’s.

And saying it’s “fanon” to logically assume that Elain purposefully wore something unflattering, per the obvious juxtaposition in the text between the two sisters is really rich coming from the side that believes Elain is snuggling at night with Luc/en’s jacket from ACOMAF.
