Reading Daomu Biji as a non mainland Chinese would make you feel like, "Why so racist?"
But actually, NPSS might not be as racist or eccentric but in fact, truly a good writer who understood the way his characters and their setting would think.
The somehow racist part of Daomu Biji, perhaps is the subtle prejudice about their own Ethnic Minorities and the subtle Han Chinese supremacy, and unsavory comments about their bordering countries.
But If you're looking at it from the characters' POV, meaning, from a (somewhat average) mainland Chinese dude, it's actually quite natural. That's what they get from their history and the information from their media.
The way Daomu Biji put any extreme culture, such as sacrifices etc, to Ethnic minorities is actually quite justified, since in other countries too, that's what happened. And it's also quite logical or accurate, historically. Even today, some ethnic minorities are still continuing their "strange" customs. So it's not entirely racist.
In fact, Daomu Biji also wasn't merciful to their own Han Chinese ancestor's past incident. For example, by telling that King Mu of Zhou was fabricating history. Instead of being warmly welcomed by XiWangMu, he's actually there to invade but failed. In embarrassment, he fabricated history about him being entertained in XiWangMu's territory.
Next, the beef with other countries.
But in reality, it's not just Chinese, but other countries' citizens too, in Asia, particularly, would have beef with their bordering countries. And some (rather uncultured) people would also call them using nicknames. For example, in JP media, we often see how the Yakuza are always either connected or having dispute with Chinese Mafia. In SK media, we often see their Mafia connected or in a hostile relationship with Yakuza. In China too, their Mafia/other underground forces would often either connected or have enmity with Vietnamese Gangster.
In Daomu Biji, we can see that Wu Xie 's perspectives would always go neutral. Either citing the history or telling the informaiton that was told in China to general public like Wu Xie.
Pangzi or Pan Zi, on the other hand, are characters who aren't as "cultured" as Wu Xie. So their POV would often be quite racist. And that's actually rather in character and accurate, considering their background and character setting.
This, also applied to XiaoGe or Men You Ping. We can see that someone like him who cares a shit about the world, will turn out to never give zealous Han Chinese supremacy or racist comment about anything or anyone.
Surprisingly, Daomu Biji actually also isn't subtle to the actions of their Han Chinese or the past action of their government. For example, whenever the book was discussing about various people who smuggled Tombs goods overseas, the book didn't try to gloss that even among Han Chinese there were people like that. There's also when the book was describing the cruel reality during the purge of Superstitious and Religious forces in China, to strengthen their government's influence. At that time, people didn't even dare to say they know a little about Chinese ancient divination technique (Qimen Dunjia) for fear of being arrested or worse, eliminated. But most of all, Daomu Biji too, isn't merciful when it came to the protagonist's perspectives. The book isn't trying to beutify or justify Wu Xie's actions as a grave robber throughout.
But what I want to say is that, Daomu Biji is a series written from the perspective of (quite) average Chinese citizens, who aren't Overseas returnee (to be able to see more perspectives from the global history or information other than their government propaganda). While some topics were probably quite sensitive, but if you stop for a second and consider where they're taken at, you will understand why the Author wrote it that way.

(busts through the wall) DID SOMEBODY ASK FOR DMBJ PROMPTS??
i want something sunrise but i want it to be dumb/silly. i know it's a serious au but it's about three fools so it should still be possible.
okay you said something silly. and i THINK "xiaoge who literally purrs" counts, but. i couldn't help but get feelings in it </3 wu xie's pov because i realised i'd done xiaoge AND pangzi's pov for sunrise but not wu xie's yet. (also this got LONG i am so sorry..........)
-
The first thing they do after they get Xiaoge back from that fucking rift in Changbaishan is fall into a tangle of limbs and sleep for ten hours straight.
Well, no. The first thing they do is bundle Xiaoge, who has somehow in the last decade lost the thick, fur-lined coat he’d been in when he and Wu Xie had come up here that last time, into a thick, heavy, coat that smells faintly of smoke, which had been shoved into one of the saddlebags to make it take up as little space as possible. The second thing they do is herd Xiaoge, who looks less and less distant and dazed as the moments pass, in front of a fire and ply him with the best food they can offer, here, so far from any city and proper kitchen amenities. The falling into a pile and sleeping for what feels like glorious, golden days is closer to the fifth or sixth thing that they do, but Wu Xie sort of loses track somewhere along the way, because Xiaoge’s presence, an absence rent into the very core of his being, of the world, for so, so long, is intoxicating, and Wu Xie keeps losing track of his thoughts.
“Tianzhen,” Pangzi says, knee knocking against his, warmer than the crackling fire between them, and doesn’t say anything more; just tilts his head towards Xiaoge, who’s half-buried in the voluminous folds of the coat they’d foisted on him. It makes Wu Xie’s throat lock, tight and painful, the way that, even now, after so long spent keeping him at arms length, Pangzi is still the man he loves; still one of two people who understand him in a way no other does, in a way that renders spoken communication unnecessary. With a shuddering sigh, Wu Xie lets his eyes slip closed. The threads between them—ones that Wu Xie had feared, for the past few years, would snap and break; leave Xiaoge stranded to a world Wu Xie couldn’t even imagine, to die with a mind slowly bending, breaking, shattering; leave Pangzi, one day, to snap to the horrifying awareness of it, of that break, of the bond between them, carefully nurtured, built on an aching, all-pervasive trust, not only fraying, but rent apart because of Wu Xie’s carelessness, because Wu Xie hadn’t been careful enough to keep it alive—flicker at the back of his mind. Glow, nearly, with an indescribable incandescence, a pulsing sense of warmth, of home.
He spent long enough unable to see a way past the end of things, of a life beyond the plan; now, it’s time for him to try and make things right. He opens his eyes and smiles at Pangzi; lets his hand settle on his knee, and, for a moment, squeezes, just to let him know he’s there. And then, raising his voice, he says, “Ah, Xiaoge, come here. You’re going to freeze like that.”
Xiaoge blinks, slow. As if he hadn’t even realised he’d been sitting so far away. Then, gangly figure uncurling, he crosses the too-large distance—small as it is in reality—, and Wu Xie shifts to leave space between himself and Pangzi for Xiaoge to slot into. He does—easily, as if he’d never forgotten how; as if he’s coming home. The glance Wu Xie gets out of the side of his vision shows him Pangzi’s eyes are just as misty as his.
So, no; sleeping together isn’t the first thing they do, technically. But it’s important enough that it feels like it.
The bedrolls they’d brought along are the type that can be combined together; Wu Xie does so while Pangzi tells Xiaoge about the terrible snowstorm they’d had to brave through on the way there, replete with taking care of a snow-blind Wu Xie in the cave they’d taken shelter in. “Our Tianzhen,” he says, with a smile and a shake of his head. “Terrible luck.” It makes Xiaoge smile, small and barely-there, and the image makes Wu Xie’s lungs burn with something he hasn’t felt in years.
Actually clambering into their makeshift bed is fairly anticlimactic; all of them are too tired to be prickly about space, or limbs, or anything besides curling close to each other. Wu Xie winds up on one side, Pangzi in the middle, and Xiaoge on the other. If this were a real bed, Pangzi would lovingly and dramatically bully Xiaoge into the middle, but a real bed is also safe in a way that being up in the mountains isn’t, and they’re both well-aware of Xiaoge’s vigilance, undulled by time. Well, no—if Wu Xie’s theories about the Hiveside are right, then he might be even more vigilant than he once was. And Wu Xie—he tries not to think too much about why Pangzi let him be on the outside.
The horses, settled down on the other side of the fire, whicker at each other, the sound a subtle hum in the night. Wu Xie lets out a breath, and settles; pillows his head on Pangzi’s chest, slings his arm across to brush fingers across Xiaoge’s side. Under him, Pangzi lets out a muffled laugh, but doesn’t comment. Xiaoge doesn’t sigh, but Wu Xie can feel the tension that bleeds out of him at the combined contact, and he curls inwards, so he’s facing them.
It’s not hard to fall asleep like that; ten years of vigilance are nothing in the face of the warmth and safety trickling down the slowly-widening bond between them. Once, Wu Xie had stood in the boiler room of a great, snaking black train. At the time, he’d been too busy thinking about other things, but right now, all he can remember is the warmth—and the heat of it pales in comparison to this, tenfold.
Some time later, he slowly swims to consciousness in the dawn light, pale, the world around them tinted a dilute blue. Under his head, Pangzi’s chest rises and falls, a slight wheezing snore drifting from his open mouth. Wu Xie’s own lips are wet with the beginnings of drool, and he reaches a clumsy hand to wipe the traces of it away. There’s a low, steady rumble that permeates the air, and his eyes snap open, his body already moving as his mind hurtles, full-speed, across a plan to get them all out of here, away from the impending avalanche—and then he catches sight of Xiaoge, long limbs pulled up and curled against Pangzi’s side, only one, slitted eye visible through the fringe of his hair, and he realises the sound is coming from him.
Pangzi, disturbed by the sudden scramble, cracks his eyes open and lets out a grumbling complaint. “Aiya, Tianzhen, you’re letting the cold in. Get back here, will you? You’re going to freeze our poor Xiaoge.”
Wu Xie blinks a couple times. “Right,” he says, hasty and belated, and gets back under the covers, only for Pangzi to drag him closer so he’s practically laying on top of him. “Hey!”
“Maybe that’ll teach you to move less,” Pangzi says, softly vindictive, and then yawns, eyes scrunching up. “...Xiaoge, is that you?” He drags Xiaoge closer, and the rumbling increases, both in intensity and pitch. The sound goes a little hitching as Xiaoge’s head lands on Pangzi’s chest, a mere hairsbreadth away from Wu Xie’s own. His eyes, no longer narrow, flash in the low-light. The rumbling is loud enough Wu Xie can feel it in his bones.
“Mn,” Xiaoge says, the sound overlaid over the rumbling.
It takes a moment for Wu Xie to sift through his still sleep-addled thoughts to process it. “Are you...purring?” he manages, eventually, and reaches out a clumsy hand to press against Xiaoge’s chest. It rises and falls beneath his touch, rattling. “Since when can you do that?”
Xiaoge blinks at him. “Always,” he says, as if it should be obvious. Pangzi, beneath them, chokes on a laugh.
“Oh.” Wu Xie processes the words, blinking a few times. “Then why did you never...”
Xiaoge shrugs. “Forgot,” he says, the words quiet, and Wu Xie’s throat tightens. Under them, Pangzi stills, a quiet sigh slipping out. His hand comes up to card through Xiaoge’s hair, and Xiaoge’s eyes slip closed.
“Like a cat,” Pangzi says, fond and amused, after a long moment. Xiaoge doesn’t open his eyes, apparently content with the designation. Wu Xie’s lips twitch. “Who knew our Xiaoge’r was so cute.”
Xiaoge, clearly unbothered by the comment, keeps purring. Wu Xie’s mind is far too sleeplogged to figure out how the fuck that even works—is it a mechanical process that just sounds like purring? Is he tapping into the tech that lines his body? Is it instinctual? On purpose?
“Your thoughts are too loud,” comes Xiaoge’s quiet voice. “Go to sleep.”
Wu Xie, for once obedient, surrenders. Surrounded by the warmth of the men he loves, he slips back into sleep.

Best of HeiPing - AO3 edition
As requested by @meluci-fer based on the Totally Objective and Very Correct Opinion of Tumblr user Fixaidea (with the occasional guest appearance by Wu Xie as part of a V-shaped poly setup).
Caring for Your Zhang Qiling: A Practical Guide by Anonymous - Glasses saves A-Kun before Grandpa Chen finds him. Bittersweet and lovely.
A Moment to Breathe by Anonymous - Glasses and Xiaoge relax after robbing a tomb, a cute and fluffy oneshot.
Message Received by MountainRose - This one is a smutty oneshot. It's from Glasses' POV and his cheeky humour carries through the whole narration. It's as cute and funny as it is hot.
Solitude by Anonymous - 'The thing about loving Yaba was that it was supposed to be safe.' Yeah, this one hurts. :)
end this night by Anonymous - 'Yaba was crying' This one is lovely and bittersweet.
Aftermath by Boketto_cafune - This one is not so much smut, but (as the title suggests) the aftermath of thereof. Very soft and gentle (ft. Wu Xie).

WIP meme
Thanks for tagging me @thelaithlyworm !
Rules: make a new post with the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them, and then post a little snippet or tell them something about it! and then tag as many people as you have WIPs.
(Hope I'm doing this correct lol
Also, i usually name things after Im done writing, so none of these have names as they are wips)
1. A Bai Jintang and Gongsun Ce fic (for SCI: The Mystery Novel). I think I meant to name this something like "Blood, Glass and Bone Ashes"
With introspective GSC pov, where I analyse their horrific relationship start, and what continuing meant for both of them, and where they stand now. Though I HATED them in the first few books, by book 4 they had unexpectedly grown on me and I wanted to do something about that, but to my regret I only wrote like 500 words at the time and postponed it till I've read all of SCI, but by book 5 I kinda started losing interest on the series therefore I keep pushing this Wip to the back shelf. Sorry, fic. Maybe one day I'll get back to you🫠
2. Baby Pangzi fic
Probably will never happen because I wrote a baby Xiaoge fic and included all the best baby shenanigans in it already. Dui bu qi, Pangzi! Ive done you great injustice 😭
3. A Heixie fic that acknowledges Pingxie, Huaxie, Pangxie, Heiping and Heihua all at the same time.
Will probably finish this, it kinda feels all over the place but this is a headcanon so dear to me so I will try my best to brush it up.
4. A One Million Yen Girl (jmovie) au for Zhang Qiling
I've written like 1/8 of this, I really want to write it but I feel like it's beyond my abilities and it stopped being fun. There was this aloof and extremely introvert atmosphere in the Japanese movie but that's what... uh, handwaves....the Jmovie vibes tends to be like sometimes but that's so not the C-story vibe, not even in the most thought provoking, languid and quiet Cmovie/Cdrama, and I thought I could make it work because Zhang Qiling is aloof himself but the more I write the more I feel like this only looks appealing on visual media not when you write it.
OR it's not actually as bad as I think but because I already have this exact image in my head, inability to achieve it makes me more dissapointed. One needs to be careful when they adapt a story from one culture to another that is quite different from the first one, and if you are feeling awkward you better stop. Some things only work in your head and not on paper.
Now for the tagging
Hmm
I don't know a lot of dmbj people on tumblr huhu. @missfangirll @mekare-art @epicwalrus if you will? 🙈
Oh well, I realise I've left nothing for anyone to ask about anw, I've already provided descriptions. Should I remove them, then? Nvm 😂

Tumblr media
Pangzi says respect women even if you’re a cannibal
Tumblr media
Fuck you, Wu Xie, who are you calling ordinary?
Tumblr media
This is honestly the most Wu Xie thing. Doesn’t want to run an actual business so sabotages it until his award is rescinded
Tumblr media
And here we all thought Xiaoge was the one who bonded with the cats
Tumblr media
PANGZI BOUGHT A COW OMG
Tumblr media
Aww the cow didn’t last long. Poor Pangzi ☹️
Tumblr media
I suppose it’s a bit weird to say to a relative stranger ‘sorry but he’s married to me and our other husband’
Tumblr media
Given how often they all get injured having a contact in the hospital does make a lot of sense
Tumblr media
PANGZI IS HOLDING A BABY
Tumblr media
It’s interesting that from Wu Xie’s POV this is a sad story. He doesn’t seem to realise that Pangzi is perfectly happy with him and Xiaoge
Anyway that’s the end of Yucun 2. I shall start Yucun 3 tomorrow

Jumping in with some Iron Triangle OT3 outside pov for @polyshipweek!
Today is day six, and one of the themes is drabble, so here, have a drabble.
Fandom: DMBJ Ship: Iron Triangle OT3
*
"Who's that?" asked Wu Erbai. The fat man flashed a smile at Wu Xie, then stared murder at Wu Erbai.
"My boyfriend Pangzi," Wu Xie replied brightly.
Wu Erbai frowned. "I thought that..." Murderous twink? "...slim fellow was your boyfriend."
"Xiaoge is too," agreed Wu Xie. Wu Erbai's frown deepened into a scowl. "Is there a problem, Er-shu?" Wu Xie and Pangzi shared a look and turned back at Wu Erbai, both staring murder at him.
"No," Wu Erbai sighed. Even if they didn't kill him, that twink would. "As long as you...three...are happy."
So much for grand-nephews.

Twenty Questions for Fic Writers!
tagged by @bbcphile~ thank you my dear 🫶
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
30 right now~ what a nice number!
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
363,479!
3. What fandoms do you write for?
so many, lol. right now, i'm actively writing for LHL and YRZX (and a bit LZTJ), but i previously wrote a lot for QYJ, CHSSN, and DMBJ.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
may we tie our hearts together again ⚫️⚪️ QingYa
9k, red string AU, canon + post-canon
NOTICE: Seeking Marriage Partner 💙💚 PingXie
5k, post-canon
青山仍在 | as long as the green hills remain 🪷🐕 HuaFang
7k, post-canon fix-it
but ask for no regrets 💙💚 PingXie
5k, canon-compliant N+1 things
a ghost walks into a soldier's house 💙🤍 SuiTang | 🖤💚 WeiLan
16k, crossover + crack treated seriously
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
i try my best to, but for various reasons comments will accumulate in my inbox and i might not respond to them until even a year later. but please believe me, i do read every single one.
6. What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
i write a lot of HEs... perhaps only an echo, since the entire premise of that (unfinished) series is an AU where Wu Xie isn't there to fulfill his ten-year promise with Xiaoge. rather than angsty endings, i write more angsty stories? in which case, the angstiest might be 千里自同风 | no distance too great as a canon-compliant post-canon fic that follows Fang Duobing's journey of grief. (but i don't think the ending of that is sad, tbh.) alternatively, 飞蛾扑火 | for you, i'll gladly burn is another contender given Shen Yi's big reveal in the last chapter (but also don't think the ending is sad). 红尘似水,万事入歌 | the world becomes song is pretty sad too if only because we the readers know the characters' fates in canon.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
honestly, i think most of my fics are HEs. or if not "happy," comforting for sure. most of my fics end with a promise to be together, to spend an ordinary life together, to have the chance to be in the moment together. it might not be super, like, grand or dramatic or anything - but i genuinely think all my fics have peaceful endings. so take your pick, peruse my works~
8. Do you get hate on fics?
rarely, and the few times that i have, i've simply deleted them.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
nope. i don't know how to, LOL
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
i have a guilty pleasure of writing crossovers, lol. i think they're all kinda wild:
a ghost walks into a soldier's house
镇魂 Guardian & 成化十四年 The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty
do not speak as loud as my heart
盗墓笔记 The Grave Robbers' Chronicles & 镇魂 Guardian
红尘似水,万事入歌 | the world becomes song
鬓边不是海棠红 Winter Begonia & 老九门 Mystic Nine
懷月夢 | on the summit, sun and snow
三生三世枕上书 Eternal Love of Dream & 封神演义 The Investiture of The Gods
照猫画狐 | tracing a cat to draw a fox
猎罪图鉴 Under the Skin & 无眠之境 Desire Catcher
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
not that i know of. don't steal my fics.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
yes! 此生如梦 | this life, a dream was tl'ed into Russian~
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
yes~ @naiwong-bao and i somehow churned out the 111k monster that was 懷月夢 | on the summit, sun and snow. to this day, i have no idea how we did that, LOL
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
impossible for me to choose~ recency bias will suggest 🦊🐼 青也, 🪷🐕 花方, and 🎨🔍 城心城翊 though~
15. What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
my 往前走 莫回呀头 | go forward and don't look back series 🥹 i had two more parts planned originally after Xiuxiu's POV... one was Liu Sang, the other was Xiaoge. (there was an undetermined Bai Haotian POV fic too.) i also definitely won't be finishing the sound of snowfall (and don't want to LOL)
16. What are your writing strengths?
atmosphere and rhythm, i think. maybe because i used to write a lot of poetry? i also have faith in my world-building (bc i do a LOT of research) and dialogue. in terms of tropes, it must undoubtedly be hurt/comfort.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
i'm not good at writing fight/action scenes (probably another reason why i literally cannot write smut). i also don't think i'm super great at description, but i think i've been improving.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
this is an interesting question because i actually write all my dialogue in Chinese first and then tl it to English since i pretty exclusively write for c-media now 😆 i like that a lot bc i think it helps me to more accurately characterize these ppl - but also it sucks tremendously when English is just the ugliest-sounding language in the world, LOL. (i always think my original Chinese dialogue is prettier and has more depth~)
19. First fandom you wrote for?
the first fandom i posted fic on AO3 for was Good Omens: i love(d) you. but in my life, it was probably like... Warriors (yes, the cats) or Shugo Chara..? idk, or maybe Case Closed (still love that series despite how insufferably long it's gotten).
20. Favorite fic you've written?
only children need to choose; adults can have everything~

dmbj ficrecs: a pingxie diptych
a winding path, an empty page, a silhouette (2519 words) i think of loss and i can only think of you (2643 words) by: A (mumblemutter) [@programmedradly] fandom: 终极笔记 | Ultimate Note, 盗墓笔记 - 南派三叔 | The Grave Robbers' Chronicles - Xu Lei pairing: Wu Xie/Zhang Qiling rating: T, M warnings: no archive warnings apply characters: Zhang Qiling, Wu Xie, Wang Pangzi tags: amnesia, kissing, sharing a bed, episode related, post-episode 15, episode 31 summary: Xiaoge finds his way back, and makes new memories.

am i biased in loving these two fics, since the author graciously gifted them to me? possibly. should you read them anyway? DEFINITELY. her xiaoge pov is so quiet and subtle yet tensile and strong, like spun silk. and wu xie is just—i don’t have words, really. always the brightest thing in any room, to xiaoge. i feel a very normal way about them. and the sword-giving scene, and huo nainai separating them—this fic so deftly fills in all of the interstices of xiaoge slowly coming back to himself after the jade cavern, remembering and reconnecting, and starting over again where he can’t mend. yes. so good. you will be glad you read them.

For the WiP titles game... Pingxie? 👀
I LOVE THEM SO MUCH THEY ARE SO IN LOVE. *claws hands down face*
The document right now is just a paragraph from Xiaoge's POV, so it's already doomed, because how would I even begin to write Xiaoge POV. 😅 But who knows! Maybe after I finish Ultimate Note I'll need to self-soothe with some fic.

ask meme: dmbj ❤️🧡💖
❤: Which character do you think is the most egregiously mischaracterized by the fandom?
the amount of infuriating characterisation the tiesanjiao endures makes me want to throw things honestly but you know this. but that’s also not choosing ONE character, so……….i’ve already complained about wu xie, and i can’t choose between pangzi and xiaoge so i flipped a coin and i guess i’ll talk about pangzi. he gets so often pigeonholed into cheerful and comic relief and nothing more and nothing more, which ignores that 1. while he does do these things that’s not all he is, and 2. it’s arguable that he does these things deliberately, because he knows what it makes people think. not that he ISN’T cheerful or ISN’T funny but like—a not all he is!!!!!
🧡: What is a popular (serious) theory you disagree with?
i say this with love in my heart but i don’t think pingxie is doing wild kinky sex. they’re way more the type to get weird and introspective about objectively very normal sex because they’re having A Lot Of Feelings about it. also i don’t think xiaoge is some sort of sex god. i’m not saying he’s bad at sex but this man has memory and trust issues do you really think that he spent a ton of time sleeping around. you aren’t born innately having absurd sexual prowess.
💖: What is your biggest unpopular opinion about the series?
i know i’ve said it’s tolerable and this is TRUE i have read far worse but the first person pov nature of the novels drives me BATTY. i constantly have to grit my teeth and remind myself it’s worth it. probably why i keep poking at the side novels instead since i don’t have to deal with that because they’re blessedly third person.
