POM POM: KILLER OF MASCOT GAMES #6
Pom Pom vs Ty the Tasmanian Tiger
"Oh, I sure do hate having to leave a play date so early; You see, today, just when a brand new friend let me try out his cool half-frisbee thingies, and that booger just stopped moving and started to play-sleep. Before I could finish our game, a big loud alarm and red flashing lights came in and scared me away.
Turns out it was just an ambulance; which I don't think is a fun trick to play. So, I suppose now it would be the right thing to do if I just paid my new best friend a quick visit!!!"
(Ref)
Happy Pom Pom Friday!
Previous Next
Character Context:
Pom Pom is a virus/glitch formed by the scrapped side-scrolling arcade game from the early 90's “Pom-Pom Panic”. Pom Pom (the main character of Pom Pom Panic) for whatever reason gained sentience halfway during the game’s development. The game was cancelled halfway because the publishing company thought it was too bizarre of a concept and mascot character to gain interest. Pom Pom heard of the news and took it way too personally, as she literally cannot fathom why someone would think she’s ‘bizarre’-even to the point of getting ‘axed’. Prompted by the ‘poor judgement’ Pom Pom went rouge-breaking from her game to ‘axe’ any ‘approved’ game mascots/characters she thought could count as ‘bizarre’ like her.

Frogun
As we’re currently in a retro revival trend for fifth gen console games, specifically platformers, there’s no shortage of options for a nostalgic buzz. What makes Frogun stick out from the pack, though, is that it doesn’t have the same sort of inspirations as the majority of the crowd. Instead of Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, or one of the PS1’s major platformer hits, Frogun is more interested in giving a new stab at the attempts of the middle market, particularly Chameleon Twist. The end result is something that feels unique while dressed in old school aesthetics.

Sony's problem is they don't have any mascots, and all their well known characters aren't that mascot-y either.
Consider: Nintendo was able to make a videogame entirely out of mascots. It has 100 of them. For some reason they all fit in the game.
Warner bros was able to do the same thing. Fricken Warner Bros! Everyone knows Harley Quinn, Finn the Human, Jason Voorhers (lol), Steven Universe.
Xbox has Master Chief. Core and centre, Master Chief. Do they even need anyone else? Well they could throw in the Gears of War characters and even some Fallout bros if they want.
Sony has... Nathan Drake? Whoop de doo. Actually let me look at the list:
Tumblr media
Hooray! You can play as... *checks notes*... Cole MacGrath! Twice!
Like yeah playing as Raiden or Big Daddy would be legendary in Smash bros, they even had Dante(!!!), but they have far too many Serious characters and not enough silly mascots. It's just not the same as Smash.
They should do something like Soul Caliber where it's a real fighter and not a party fighter. Then you can have Aloy and Kratos fight each other and people will be excited about it. Maybe throw in Crash Bandicoot DLC to make the fans absolutely lose their minds.

Nomads Soulmates
Aaaah my nomads in love! For those who don't know, I created Virgile on Xbox to romance Panam after the frustration when I couldn't when playing Vanessa. Virgile was there to live a nomad love story and be a netrunner. 3 years later, I've created a big family for him and a great lore, and still Panam by his side ♥ Despite his V name, Virgile isn't a V, just a sidekick in V's (Valentin, my husband oc) timeline. He met Panam before game events, started bad, then became together before break up, and find them again thanks to Valentin during game event, now living a true happy ending <3
And as personal headcanons, he never truly questioned his sexuality, his first kiss was with a guy, first time with girls, he was with both because it was normal for him, mostly because his ex-clan was open-minded about this. And Bi Panam because i can x) And you can see a doggo ! Virgile found this dog/coyote on the road on his way to the Aldecaldos camp and picked it up for treatment. The dog left after healing, then came back. He became the camp mascot, sleeping in Panam's tent or playing with Bob. Name ? Marius ! Expecting a child, Virgile and Panam have a child with lots of hair and energy

So, the 10th Anniversary week of FNaF is over. Looking back on this franchise and how special it is to me, remembering how I became a part of the community after the first two games came out and the third one was being teased. It's still crazy to me that 10 years ago, FNaF was a horror game that was created by one man and 10 years later, FNaF is one of the biggest horror franchises in gaming history! I can remember beating the first two games on the Kindle and it was such a surreal moment, but who would have thought that there would be many sequels after the main trilogy (4-UCN), many spin-off games (World, FiS 2, FiS 3, FR), two incredible VR games, an AR game, the biggest Non-VR installment with a phenomenal DLC (SB/Ruin), tons of merchandise, countless fangames, talented people who made the greatest fansongs for the series, pillars of the community in the form of YouTubers (Markiplier, MatPat, Dawko, 8-BitGaming, FuhNaff, RyeToast, etc.), the fans, the loved composers making absolute bangers for the games and the movie(s) (Leon Riskin, Allen Simpson, A Shell In The Pit, The Newton Brothers, etc.), the many iconic characters not only created by Scott Cawthon himself, but by bigger organisations of people who made it their mission to carry on the legacy of Scott (Steel Wool Studios, Illumix, Mega Cat Studios, etc.) but also by the fans who work tirelessly to figure out the lore of the series and give characters their own style of personality, bringing life to those who seemed to have none, the insane amount of theories and headcanons within the puzzled minds of theorists and fans alike, the crazy amount of books that still wrack our brains to this day (FF, TFtP, SE trilogy, etc.), the nostalgic easter eggs hidden throughout every installment that inspired others to create their very own hoaxes to fool the community, and most importantly the massive success of the games was unexpectedly recognised when Scott was losing hope in his career when his previous game (Chipper & Sons Lumber Co.) didn't have the same effect on people that FNaF eventually would and therefore, led to the production and overwhelming success of the groundbreaking first ever FNaF movie! Seeing it in the cinema on the big screen was an incredible experience that I will never forget. It still amazes me that I went from a small Kindle screen, to an Xbox/TV screen, to a cinema screen and just thinking about the depth of it all made me emotional because I've never stopped loving and caring about this franchise. The impact of it's very existence is still unrivalled, many have tried to recreate the feel and atmosphere of the mascot horror genre that FNaF created with their own games (Poppy Playtime, Garten Of Banban, Tattletail, Bendy and the Ink Machine, etc.) Some succeeded and even became their own stand-alone franchises, of course FNaF didn't completely create the mascot horror genre, it not only reignited it but made it grow in popularity, hence the creation of many beloved fangames of the series. This is such an exciting time for the FNaF community, and I could say much more about the entirety of FNaF, but there's just simply too much of the surface to scratch. Here's to the eventful 10 years of Five Nights at Freddy's!
🎉🎂
(Below are my Mini / Plush versions of Sun and Moon. They may not be the best, but I'm still quite happy with how they turned out.)

Correction with Professor Worminkle: In Worms 4 Mayhem, there's a cutscene ("outtakes7") where Boggy B, the mascot of Worms, shows up. He is also playable in Worms Blast, and I remember the Twitter Ryu Number account used that game to give Superfrog a Ryu Number (connecting him through Ethel the Old Lady and the historical figures from Worms Forts). Alternatively, Worms WMD had Joanna Dark as a weapon in the Xbox version, and Boggy B is one of the default worms in that game iirc.
Tumblr media
If we're going through that route, technically there's no need to go through Boggy B, seeing as the Old Woman is a weapon in Worms 4: Mayhem, and in my opinion treating the aforementioned weapon as a character in its own right thanks to a named character in a spin-off is probably fine, but in combination with having to count Helen of Troy as Worm, which I also think is probably fine (if not even more so, actually), that's enough caveating for an alternate route.
Regardless, thank you for the correction!

In a surprising update, #Sony has confirmed that the upcoming #AstroBot game for #PlayStation5 will feature characters such as #CrashBandicoot, despite Microsoft owning the IP after it acquired #Activision.
The inclusion of these famous mascots, now under #Xbox's purview, is notable given that Sony underscores a puzzling reliance on #Microsoft's assets.
This partnership contrasts with Xbox's previous inclusions of characters like Banjo-Kazooie in Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, showcasing Xbox's more open approach to collaborations.

Developing S0-R0 (Sketches)
I just feel like drawing Kun3h0-likes lately, so I decided to work more on developing a "rival" character for her. Right now, I'm whittling away at this design that I'm calling "S0-R0" for the time being.
The 2 pics are the latest drawings, then I have the progress of getting to that point in chronological order. You can see the very first "rival" sketch in the last Misc doodle dump.
When I first went into this project, I didn't have any strong direction for where I wanted the character to go. Since Kun3h0 isn't fully developed as a character either, it was kinda hard to think of a foil to basically nothing. However, I did know that I at least wanted the rival's theme to be "stars" to contrast Kun3h0's hearts. So whatever I did was gonna drift towards sharpness.
The first chronological sketch is almost a straight inverse of Kun3h0's design in terms of palette. I wanted the silhouette of their arms and legs to be roughly similar so that it's more clear that they're supposed to be connected and not (just) that I have a limited amount of body-plans that I default to. I do like the black/green color scheme, but they've got a real "XBox" and "Monster Energy" vibe to them.
The outfit itself was heavily based on these clothes, just to give me a little direction, but the current design really drifted away from this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I added spinning bulborb just so the clothes wouldn't stretch out the post too much)
I also borrowed an old idea from my "Digital Idol Kayane" design, where she had some of her elements floating around. I figured since Kun3h0's ears/antenna just kinda "float" that I could apply the same logic to the whiskers. That detail would persist through most iterations of the design, but I eventually dropped them.
But, I was still pretty unhappy with that design, so I made another sketch and started working around it. The first iteration was mostly a palette swap to get away from Monster Energy, so I went with cyan since it's a kinda futuristic color that I thought would go great with the black base. Eventually it evolved into the second iteration where I went back to giving them the pants of the very first rival sketch and working from there. I'm not quite sure where the idea for the spikes came from. I think I just wanted to add some more "sharpness" to really work in the star motif, but then that kinda became the "main" motif beyond the stars.
I thought the black/cyan/red color scheme was really cool, but it kinda works against my established symbology where stars are yellow and moons are blue. In the event that I design a moon-motif character in the GAB universe, it would be odd for them to now not be able to use blue because the star-motif character got to it first. So, I did another palette swap, this time exchanging cyan for yellow and gold.
While I was working on that, I also got the idea to design their mascot to help with the design process. Since Kun3h0 was originally based on GAB, I thought that it might help me come up with ideas to solidify the mascot design first and that would help me design the rival proper. So, I made this little fox fella and have been designing S0-R0 around them since. I made several other palettes for the mascot, but in the end I went with my first design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, I took another stab at the outfit and landed on this minidress and made the collar comically large. I really liked the idea of this slim body being covered in large, overbearing spikes. I also took out more of the red accenting since I wanted to limit their palette as much as Kun3h0's, which is a neutral + 2 shades of the same color + a pop of one other color for small details.
It's not perfect yet, but I do like this direction. I went with this for some rough characterization: While GAB sought out someone with a strong heart to help them, FOX (name not final) sought someone with physical strength. Unlike Kun3h0 who is more emotional than a robot ought to be, S0-R0 tries to complete tasks as efficiently as possible, which leads to them using physical force to address most of their problems. They're not evil per se, they just don't consider the greater ramifications of their actions if they still ultimately complete their original task.
I haven't drawn it yet, but I think their weapon would be a morning star/flail.
